Avenge and revenge , once close synonyms, are now far apart in meaning. To avenge is to visit some offense with punishment, in order to vindicate the righteous, or to uphold and illustrate the right by the suffering or destruction of the wicked. "And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian," Acts vii, 24. To revenge is to inflict harm or suffering upon another through personal anger and resentment at something done to ourselves. Avenge is unselfish; revenge is selfish. Revenge , according to present usage, could not be said of God. To retaliate may be necessary for self-defense, without the idea of revenge . Compare REVENGE.
Synonyms: avenge , punish , retaliate , revenge , vindicate
Preposition: Avenge on or upon (rarely, avenge oneself of ) a wrong-doer.

Word of the Day: interloper
This word has appeared in 33 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year. Can you use it in a sentence?
By The Learning Network
interloper \ ˈɪntərˌloʊpər \ noun
: someone who intrudes on the privacy or property of another without permission
Listen to the pronunciation.
The word interloper has appeared in 33 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on March 26 in “ Will Country Welcome Beyoncé? That’s the Wrong Question ” by Jon Caramanica:
Perhaps more revealing, though, is the recent viral success of “Austin,” by Dasha — an essentially unknown white singer — a catchy, self-consciously “country” ditty that’s spurred a line-dancing trend on TikTok. A song “Austin” has quite a bit in common with? “Texas Hold ’Em.” Both deploy a banjo and wear their nods to country tradition very self-consciously. Often, contemporary mainstream country music bears little sonic resemblance to the genre’s roots, but these songs pointedly underscore that connection. (The words “Old Town Road” come to mind.) … A scroll through Dasha’s back catalog suggests that country is a mode, if not a costume — barely any of her music before this year nods to it. And yet “Austin” has become in quick order one of the signature country songs of this year. Its breakout is still relatively new, and it’s likely to grow rapidly in attention. Will Dasha be welcomed as a country artist or shunned like an interloper ? The answer, when it arrives, might not surprise you.

NOUN Hotel, COOP Ale Works launch new beer
The next time you visit The Supper Club or ONE Bar at the NOUN Hotel in Norman, you'll be greeted with a new beer from COOP Ale Works on tap.
The NOUN Hotel Light Lager is a new collaboration produced by the brewery, which just celebrated its own 15th anniversary, exclusively for the property.

"The partnership with the NOUN Hotel and COOP Ale Works really spawned when we launched Schooner All-American Ale last year in August. We did our launch party here at the NOUN Hotel," said Benny Jacobs, central Oklahoma sales rep for COOP. "Because they have been such a great partner with Schooner All-American Ale, then we wanted to be able to produce a beer for them."
The NOUN Hotel Light Lager continues the craft breweries recent venture of crafting easy-drinking light beers for the COOP portfolio.
"We wanted to appeal to the domestic drinker, but also know breweries can produce a drinkable light lager that tastes like their macro domestics — like their Bud Lights, Coors Lights, Miller Lights," Jacobs said.
"We have such big beers. We have big beers — F5, number one craft brand in Oklahoma, but it's hoppy — so it doesn't appeal to everybody. And so NOUN Lager, it appeals to everybody. Schooner All-American Ale, it appeals to everybody. It's like that just easy-drinking, sessionable type of beer."

That is the proper definition of poetry, but much like most creative spaces, the literary art form doesn’t fit neatly into one box, lane or style. It’s an expansive place of connection, bravery and vulnerability. It’s gentle, bold, soul-baring and it’s not for the weak at heart — warriors live here.
Society has conditioned us that feelings, emotions and vulnerability are signs of weakness. That’s a lie. It’s a lie we have told over and over, we’ve doubled down, and circled back, reinforcing this narrative that has truly done more harm than good.

Understanding ourselves, effectively communicating our feelings and empathy is the way out in my opinion.
Poets are the truth: They stand alone on a stage, with no instrument, no backing vocals, no band behind them. Just them and their truth; it doesn’t get more real than that.
Fayetteville’s thriving poetry scene
Fayetteville for many, many years has had a thriving poetry and spoken word scene.
COVID-19 may have put a pause in place for a time, but the scene is back in full force now, and better than ever. Southern Fried Poetry Slam, one of the most notable Poetry Slam competitions, was held right here in Fayetteville in 2018.

Detour Slam Team is OUR hometown team and is currently ranked 4th in the NATION. To make the team, 12 poets go head-to-head for the coveted five slots. Five random judges select the five poets who will create the team that will perform as a collective.
Team members work for almost a year to write, bond and perfect their pieces. That level of dedication and devotion speaks volumes about the heart of the poets that compete.

El’Ja Bowens: It started with writing
Bowens comes from a family of writers, athletes and musicians — if you are a Bowen, youdo one of those three things.
When El'Ja entered the third-grade class of Mrs. Washam and saw all these laminatedbooks and was told he could make one of his own, a writer was born. Writing is where itall started for him.
A brief pause when he was on active duty led to a rebirth of sorts and a poet emerged. The rest is beautifully spoken history.
In many ways, Bowens feels poetry has given him his life: He found his passion, his purpose, his path and even his beautiful wife. It’s shaped the man he is and fuels his daily life.
A seed looking to grow
Community, connection, and education are the cornerstones of Poetry-N-Motion, which was founded in 2015. Bowens says: “Regardless of where I am, I am still a seed looking to grow.” I think this quote sums him up perfectly.
And grow he does. But he also waters, fertilizes and tills the soil so that others can grow as well. When others speak of him, it’s rooted in a deep respect and appreciation for all the framework that has been laid, the endless mentorship and guidance, countless hours, days, weeks, YEARS of performing and curating events within our community.
Bowens pours endlessly from a seemingly bottomless cup; our community is grateful andabsolutely better for it.
“Fayetteville? Who else you got?”……..
Poetic Zae: It started with scraps of paper
Let’s take it back to Birmingham, Alabama. Long before he even had the knowledge or anyunderstanding of what poetry was, or that poets existed, he had the words, the feelings, the deep-seated need to express them.
Scraps of paper covered in 5-year-old Isaiah’s scribble tucked away in books and drawers never shared beyond his bedroom walls. He didn’t know. He didn’t know there were others like him. He didn’t know he wasn’t alone in his writings. He just knew he had to get it out, had to write it down.
Instinctual poetry, his young little soul pouring out, expressing, feeling yet protecting his thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams. It was always by him, for him, just a hard-wired need to write, write and then write some more.
He is a beautifully balanced representation of parts that include his overachieving, disciplined and fiercely determined active-duty father; his free-spirited, vibrant mother, whom Isaiah affectionately calls "colorful;" and his steady, solid, loving grandmother.
‘New kid on the block’
He feels like a new kid on the block still, even almost a decade deep into the art. He still doesn’t always reveal this particular side to everyone in his world. He is still pursuing and discovering all aspects of his creativity as, a writer, an editor, a poet and how to balance that all with life.
One thing is certain, he will express himself in some way shape or form — he will express himself. He will grow, evolve, try, win, fail, try again, write about it, share it, learn from it and help others with it.
He is a beautiful light, this refreshing balance of lighting the path while finding his way. He walks in greatness while on his way to believing it.

Create and add an email signature in Outlook
In Outlook, you can create one or more personalized signatures for your email messages. Your signature can include text, links, pictures, and images (such as your handwritten signature or a logo).
Note: If the steps under this New Outlook tab don't work, you may not be using new Outlook for Windows yet. Select Classic Outlook and follow those steps instead.
Create and add an email signature
On the View tab, select View Settings .
Select Accounts > Signatures .
Select New signature , then give it a distinct name.
In the editing box below the new name, type your signature, then format it with the font, color, and styles to get the appearance you want.
Select Save when you're done.
With your new signature selected from the list above the editing box, go to Select default signatures and choose whether to apply the signature to new messages and to replies and forwards.
Select Save again.
Note: If you have a Microsoft account, and you use Outlook and Outlook on the web or Outlook on the web for business, you need to create a signature in both products.
Create your signature and choose when Outlook adds a signature to your messages
If you want to watch how it's done, you can go directly to the video below .
Open a new email message.
Under Select signature to edit , choose New , and in the New Signature dialog box, type a name for the signature.
Under Edit signature , compose your signature. You can change fonts, font colors, and sizes, as well as text alignment. If you want to create a more robust signature with bullets, tables, or borders, use Word to create and format your signature text, then copy and paste it into the Edit signature box. You can also use a pre-designed template to create your signature. Download the templates in Word, customize with your personal information, and then copy and paste into the Edit signature box.
You can add links and images to your email signature, change fonts and colors, and justify the text using the mini formatting bar under Edit signature .
You can also add social media icons and links in your signature or customize one of our pre-designed temlates. For more information, see Create a signature from a template .
To add images to your signature, see Add a logo or image to your signature .
Under Choose default signature , set the following options.
In the E-mail account drop-down box, choose an email account to associate with the signature. You can have different signatures for each email account.
You can have a signature automatically added to all new messages. Go to in the New messages drop-down box and select one of your signatures. If you don't want to automatically add a signature to new messages, choose (none). This option does not add a signature to any messages you reply to or forward.
You can select to have your signature automatically appear in reply and forward messages. In the Replies/forwards drop-down, select one of your signatures. Otherwise, accept the default option of (none).
Choose OK to save your new signature and return to your message. Outlook doesn't add your new signature to the message you opened in Step 1, even if you chose to apply the signature to all new messages. You'll have to add the signature manually to this one message. All future messages will have the signature added automatically. To add the signature manually, select Signature from the Message menu and then pick the signature you just created.
Add a logo or image to your signature
If you have a company logo or an image to add to your signature, use the following steps.
Open a new message and then select Signature > Signatures .

Title: detecting conceptual abstraction in llms.
Abstract: We present a novel approach to detecting noun abstraction within a large language model (LLM). Starting from a psychologically motivated set of noun pairs in taxonomic relationships, we instantiate surface patterns indicating hypernymy and analyze the attention matrices produced by BERT. We compare the results to two sets of counterfactuals and show that we can detect hypernymy in the abstraction mechanism, which cannot solely be related to the distributional similarity of noun pairs. Our findings are a first step towards the explainability of conceptual abstraction in LLMs.

Poland’s president becomes the latest leader to visit Donald Trump as allies eye a possible return

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump met Wednesday in New York with Polish President Andrzej Duda , the latest in a series of meetings with foreign leaders as Europe braces for the possibility of a second Trump term.
The presumptive Republican nominee hosted Duda at Trump Tower, where the two discussed the war in Ukraine and Duda’s push to boost NATO members’ defense spending, according to a readout from Trump’s campaign. Duda, who has long expressed admiration for Trump, is also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and has encouraged Washington to provide more aid to Kyiv amid Russian’s ongoing invasion . That funding has been held up by Trump allies in Congress.
As he arrived, Trump praised the Polish president, saying, “He’s done a fantastic job and he’s my friend.”
“We had four great years together,” Trump added. “We’re behind Poland all the way.”
Following the almost 2 1/2 hour meeting, Duda said only that it was a “friendly meeting in very nice atmosphere.”
His aide, Wojciech Kolarski, also in attendance, described it as an “excellent meeting” of “two friends who reminisced on the time when for four years they cooperated while holding presidential offices,” a time that was “very fruitful for Polish-U.S. relations.”
Duda is the latest foreign leader to meet with Trump in the weeks since he locked up the Republican nomination. U.S. allies across the world were caught off guard by Trump’s surprise 2016 win, forcing them to scramble to build relationships with a president who often attacked longstanding treaties and alliances they valued. Setting up meetings with him during the 2024 campaign suggests they don’t want to be behind again.
Even as he goes on trial for one of the four criminal indictments against him, Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden are locked in a rematch that most observers expect will be exceedingly close in November.
While some in Poland worried the visit might damage the country’s relationship with Biden, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. — a Biden ally and a major voice in his party on foreign affairs — said such meetings make sense.
“The polls are close,” he said. “If I were a foreign leader — and there’s a precedent attached to meeting with candidates who are nominated or on the path to being nominated — I’d probably do it too.”
Murphy noted that former President Barack Obama did a lengthy international tour and met with foreign leaders when he first ran for the White House. So did Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who challenged Obama in 2012 and whose trip included a stop in Poland’s capital, Warsaw.
Duda’s visit comes a week after Trump met with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, another NATO member and key proponent of supporting Ukraine, at the former president’s Florida estate.
In March, Trump hosted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán , an autocrat who has maintained the closest relationship with Russia among European Union countries. Orbán shared a montage of footage of the visit on his Instagram feed, which included an image of him and his staff meeting with Trump and the former president’s aides in a scene that looked like an official bilateral meeting.
Trump also met briefly in February with Javier Milei, the fiery, right-wing populist president of Argentina who ran a campaign inspired by Trump , complete with red “Make Argentina Great Again” hats. Milei gave Trump an excited hug backstage at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington, according to video posted by a Trump campaign aide.
Biden administration officials have been careful not to weigh in publicly on foreign leaders’ meetings with Trump, acknowledging he has a real chance of winning the race.
While some officials have privately expressed frustration with such meetings, they are mindful that any criticism would open the U.S. to charges of hypocrisy because senior American officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, meet frequently with foreign opposition figures at various forums in the United States and abroad.
Security and policy officials monitor the travel plans of foreign officials visiting the U.S., but generally don’t have a say in where they go or with whom they meet, according to an administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss protocol.
Trump has been back in his hometown this week for the start of his criminal hush money trial , which has dramatically limited his ability to travel and campaign. While in town, aides have been planning a series of events that began Tuesday evening when Trump, after court adjourned, stopped by a Harlem bodega where a man was killed to rail against crime, and to blast the district attorney who made him the first former president in U.S. history to stand criminal trial.
Duda, a right-wing populist who once proposed naming a military base in his country “Fort Trump,” described the dinner earlier Wednesday as a private get-together between friends at Trump’s former residence while he is in town for meetings at the United Nations, where Duda is to deliver a speech.
“I have been invited by Mr. Donald Trump to his private apartment,” Duda told reporters, saying it was “a normal practice when one country has good relations with another country” to want those relations to be as strong as “possible with the representatives of various sides of the political stage.”
“We know each other as people. Like two, I can say in some way, friends,” said Duda, whose term ends in 2025.
Duda’s visit comes as House Republicans wrangle over a $95 billion foreign aid bill that would provide new funding to Ukraine, including money for the U.S. military to replace depleting weapon supplies. Polish leaders have been urging the House to approve the aid bill and ease domestic concerns.
Many Trump allies in the House are fiercely opposed to aiding Ukraine, even as the country warns that it is struggling amid a fresh Russian offensive . Trump has said he might be open to aid in the form of a loan.
One area where Trump and Duda agree when it comes to the conflict is a desire to push NATO members to increase their defense spending. Duda has called on fellow members of the alliance to raise their spending to 3% of gross domestic product as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine. That would represent a significant increase from the current commitment of 2% by 2024.
Trump, in a stunning break from U.S. precedent, has long been critical of the Western alliance and has threatened not to defend member nations that do not hit that spending goal. That threat strikes at the heart of the alliance’s Article 5 , which states that any attack against one NATO member will be considered an attack against all.
In February, Trump went even further, recounting that he’d once told leaders that he would “encourage” Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to members that are — in his words — “delinquent.”
Trump’s campaign said the two discussed the NATO proposal during the meeting. The two also discussed Israel and the Middle East, Trump’s 2017 trip to Warsaw, “and many other topics having to do with getting to world peace,” the campaign said in its readout, which described the men as “great friends.”
The visit was met with mixed reaction in Poland , where fears of Russia run high and Duda’s friendly relationship with Trump has been a source of controversy.
Poland’s centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a political opponent of Duda, was critical of the dinner but expressed hope that Duda would use it as an opportunity “to raise the issue of clearly siding with the Western world, democracy and Europe in this Ukrainian-Russian conflict.”
Scislowska reported from Warsaw. Associated Press writers Matthew Lee, Zeke Miller and Seung Min Kim in Washington contributed to this report.
