White House confirms Joe Biden will visit Syracuse on Thursday to announce Micron deal

W ashington – President Joe Biden will visit Syracuse on Thursday to make an announcement tied to the CHIPS and Science Act that lured Micron Technology to Central New York, the White House confirmed today.

Biden will announce a historic deal to provide Micron with $6.1 billion in federal grants for the company’s planned $100 billion complex of computer chip plants in the town of Clay and a smaller project in Idaho, according to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

The White House has not confirmed that the Commerce Department has reached a preliminary agreement with Micron for the federal aid package.

A White House official declined to provide information about the time and location for the president’s visit Thursday.

The official said Biden will “discuss how the CHIPS and Science Act and his Investing in America agenda are creating jobs and opportunity in Central New York and communities across the country.”

Schumer, D-N.Y., said last week the $6.1 billion grant would be one of the largest single direct federal investments in New York history.

Biden visited Syracuse in October 2022 shortly after Micron selected Central New York as the location where the company wants to build the largest memory chip plant in U.S. history.

Biden and Schumer have said the project is proof of the success of the CHIPS Act, which they pushed as a national security priority that would help rebuild the nation’s manufacturing capacity.

Micron said its project in Clay would create 9,000 jobs over 20 years, and 40,000 additional spinoff jobs from suppliers in other industries.

Biden and Trump to visit US-Mexico border on same day

Biden says he ‘didn’t know my good friend, apparently, is going’ as he plans Brownsville visit while Trump heads for Eagle Pass

Joe Biden and Donald Trump will both travel to the US border with Mexico on Thursday, dueling visits by the president and his probable opponent for re-election underlining the importance of immigration as an issue in the coming campaign.

Biden will visit Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande valley, while his presidential predecessor will head for Eagle Pass, about 325 miles distant.

In New York on Monday, Biden told reporters: “I planned it for Thursday. What I didn’t know was that my good friend, apparently, is going.”

Asked if he would meet migrants in Brownsville, the president said: “I’m not going to announce ahead of time.”

The White House said Biden would “meet with US Border Patrol agents, law enforcement, and local leaders”.

It also said Biden would “discuss the urgent need to pass the Senate bipartisan border security agreement, the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border in decades. He will reiterate his calls for congressional Republicans to stop playing politics and to provide the funding needed for additional US Border Patrol agents, more asylum officers, fentanyl detection technology and more.”

Conditions at the southern border represent a growing problem for the White House, both practically in terms of coping with record numbers of undocumented migrants arriving via Central America and politically in terms of defending against Republican attacks.

Earlier this month, Trump directed Republicans to sink a bipartisan border and immigration deal in the Senate. Alarming progressives, Biden has since been reported to be weighing using executive orders to impose policy changes including restricting access to the US for migrants claiming asylum.

Demanding a border bill regardless of such machinations by their party, House Republicans also managed, at the second attempt, to impeach Biden’s secretary of homeland security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

Despite the widely held view that the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas do not come close to meeting the standard for conviction and removal from office, the process now moves to the Senate.

On the campaign trail, Trump has upped his far-right, anti-migrant rhetoric, regularly claiming migrants are “ poisoning the blood” of the country.

On Monday, Trump – who is reportedly set to speak in Eagle Pass – used his Truth Social platform to say: “When I am your president, we will immediately seal the border, stop the invasion, and on day one, we will begin the largest deportation operation of illegal criminals in American history!”

A Trump spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, accused Biden of making “a last-minute, insincere attempt to chase President Trump to the border”, which she said would not “cut it” with voters.

On Monday, a new poll from Monmouth University considered indicated voters’ feelings on immigration.

According to the poll, more than 80% of voters now see undocumented migration as either a very serious problem (61%) or a somewhat serious problem (23%).

A majority, 53%, said they supported building a wall on the border with Mexico. A promise to do so – and to have Mexico pay for it – was a main plank of Trump’s shock victory in the 2016 election. Failure to do so, and debate over the effectiveness and environmental impact of such barriers as were built or maintained, was a constant theme of his presidency.

More than 60% of respondents to the Monmouth poll said they supported applicants for asylum having to remain in Mexico while their claims are processed.

On another central Trump campaign issue, crime, the pollsters said “about one in three (32%) think that illegal immigrants are more likely than other Americans to commit violent crimes like rape or murder”.

The poll noted that 65% of Republicans – but only 12% of Democrats – held that belief.

“Illegal immigration has taken center stage as a defining issue this presidential election year,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “Other Monmouth polling found this to be Biden’s weakest policy area, including among his fellow Democrats.”

Nonetheless, the White House and the Biden campaign are eager to turn the tables on Trump and Republicans over immigration.

In a campaign video released on Sunday, Biden was seen watching footage of Trump discussing why he leant on Senate Republicans to sink their own border deal.

“It made it much better for the opposing side,” Trump told Fox News.

“He just admitted it,” Biden said. “He sabotaged our bipartisan deal to secure the border … you know who the opposing side is? In this case, it’s America. Donald Trump roots against America every chance he gets.”

President Biden to visit Tampa on Tuesday

TAMPA, Fla. — President Joe Biden will make a stop in Tampa Tuesday, the White House has announced.

The president will be in the area on Tuesday. Additional details are expected be made available late Monday.

The Biden campaign is investing more time in Florida, though a Democrat has not won Florida since 2012.

Donald Trump won the state in 2016 and 2020.

Biden's visit will come just weeks after the state Supreme Court energized abortion rights proponents with two rulings : one that paves the way for a six-week abortion ban and another that will give voters the opportunity to repeal the ban as they also cast their vote for president.

Democrats have new hope that a ballot question seeking to preserve abortion rights will put the state back in play as the nation’s largest presidential election swing state.

There are a lot of ways you can say “come visit us.” Depending on the type of relationship you share with the person, you can be casual or formal with them.

Some of the expressions you can use in place of “come visit us” include: “come over,” “stop by later,” “check us at our new place, you’d love it,” “you can crash at our place tonight” and many other phrases.

That being said, here are 15 alternative ways to say “come visit us.”

  • Contact us at the…
  • We are happy to host you at our…
  • Won’t you come and know…?
  • Can we talk later at the…?
  • We’ll be delighted to have you during Thanksgiving
  • Check us at…
  • Crash at our…
  • My place is also your place, you can come whenever you like

“Come over” is one of the common phrases people use when they want someone to come to their place.

It’s an informal expression and very common among friends when they want each other over at their place. However, you can use this expression politely in a formal environment.

When you ask someone to come over, you’re inviting them to a place; it could be your office or your house, or any location you want them.

So, it’s a cool way to ask someone to pay you or your family a visit if you don’t want to use the expression “visit us.”

Below are ways you can use the expression:

  • I want you to come over to my office later so we can talk better
  • You can always come over to my place when you like
  • Come over during the weekend, please

visit us tomorrow

Contact Us at the…

If you don’t want to say “come visit us” to an acquaintance or a colleague, you can always ask them to contact you wherever you wish.

Asking someone to contact you at your office or home is a good way to ask them to visit you without saying it.

For instance, if you met with a potential client and you want them to visit, you can tell them to contact you at your office or home to discuss further.

In this way, you’ve asked them to visit you without saying it directly. Additionally, it’s a formal expression you use with an acquaintance or within a formal environment.

Below are the ways to use the expression:

  • You can contact us at the office if you want to find out more
  • Tell them to contact us at home. It’ll be more convenient there

Another expression you can use if you don’t want to say “come visit us” is “drop by.” This is a cool way to invite someone to a place of your choice.

It’s another common informal expression that friends or anyone can use to ask someone to visit them somewhere.

However, you can also use this expression in a formal setting if you’re polite. So, if you don’t want to use the word “visit us,” you can tell anyone to drop by later at your place.

Below is a way you can use this expression to invite someone over to a place:

  • Can you drop by the house later? We’ve some unfinished business
  • You can drop by later and say “hi”

We Are Happy to Host You at Our…

You can always ask someone over to your place without making it obvious that you want them to visit.

If it’s the case that you want a friend or colleague to meet with your family, you can use dinner or lunch to bring them to your place.

One good way to achieve that is by telling them you’re happy to host them at your desired location.

It could be your workplace or your house; if you want someone to visit you, use a dinner or lunch to lure them where you want.

In addition, it’s a polite request that will be difficult to turn down. Also, this statement can both work in a formal and informal setting.

Below is how you can use this statement:

  • We are happy to host you at our house on Sunday
  • We are happy to host you at the office anytime

Won’t You Come and Know…?

Here, you’re tactical by appealing to their emotions. If it’s the case that you built a new home or office and you want friends to visit you, you can blackmail them into doing that.

Or if you’ve got a friend who has never visited you, good blackmail can work too.

A good example is by asking if they won’t come and know your house or office or club or whatever place it is.

A good friend or colleague should be moved and give in. Of course, they wouldn’t want to seem like a bad friend. So, this is a perfect way of asking someone to visit you without actually saying it.

Here’s how to use this expression:

  • Won’t you come and know our new office? You’ve never been there
  • Won’t you come and know where we live?

Another good expression that can work to invite someone over to a place is to ask them to come by.

This is another informal expression that you can politely use in a formal setting.

When you ask someone to come by your place, you’re letting them know that you want them at your place in clear terms.

So, this is the perfect way to ask someone to your place without using the words “come visit us.”

Below is a way you can use this phrase:

  • We’ll be delighted if you come by the office to check it out
  • I’d love you to come by later, there’s a lot to discuss

Can We Talk Later at the…?

Here’s another tactical approach to inviting someone to your place without making it obvious. When you want someone over to your place, ask them politely if you can talk there.

This approach doesn’t give them plenty of options, especially if they’re your friends, or if it’s your workplace you want them to visit.

For instance, someone who isn’t comfortable with you might turn you down if you ask them to talk at your house. However, if you ask to talk with them in your office, they can hardly say no.

So, if you want someone to visit where you work or live, you can lure them with plans to talk.

Below is a good way to go about it:

  • Can we talk later at the house? This place is noisy
  • Can we talk later at the office? It’ll be a great place to relax and catch on

We’ll Be Delighted to Have You During Thanksgiving

Another tactical approach to asking someone to your place is to lure them during “Thanksgiving.”

“Thanksgiving” is a national holiday in some countries and states. So, it’s a good time to ask for a visit. A good way to go about that is to let them know you’ll be delighted to have them during Thanksgiving.

It could be friends, neighbors, colleagues, acquaintances, or even strangers; when you want someone to pay you a visit at your house, ask them for a “Thanksgiving” lunch.

Due to the nature of the holiday; a time of sharing and giving, people will hardly turn down this visit. So, try this approach when you want someone to visit you but you don’t want to spell it out.

Check Us at…

Another wonderful way you can ask someone for a visit subtly is by using this statement.

When you ask someone to check you out at a particular place, it tells them you want them there. It’s a good approach to use when discussing business with someone or talking casually to a friend or colleague.

For instance, if you want a client to visit your business area, this statement is a good way to make your request known.

Here’s how you can use this statement:

  • Check us at our new place, you’d love it
  • Can you check us at the house? We won’t be at the office today

“Stop by” is another phrase you can use when you want someone to pay you a visit at your place.

This is another informal expression that you can use to make your request. Also, you can use it in a business environment or your workplace.

For instance, if you’re longing to see someone or have someone over at your place, ask them to stop by. This expression sounds like a simple thing to do.

It’s a good approach to use when you know they’ll pass by your place anytime.

Here’s a good way to use this phrase:

  • You can stop by before going to the market
  • Why not stop by on your way back from church so we discuss this better

Crash at Our…

Another way you can ask someone to visit is by asking them to crash at your place.

This is a good approach to use when you know the person doesn’t have plenty of options.

For instance, if you’re both returning from a party and you know your house is closer, you can suggest they crash at your place.

In this way, you’ve got what you want without saying “come visit us.”

  • Why not crash at our place for the weekend? It’ll be easier to get the bus from here
  • You can crash at our place tonight, you can’t drive in this state

My Place is also Your Place, You Can Come Whenever You Like

This is another tactical way to get someone to visit you without saying it out loud.

Also, this is another emotional statement you can use to get someone reluctant to come to visit you. In addition, it’s suitable to use with friends or someone you share a solid relationship with.

When you tell them your place is also theirs and they can come whenever they like, they should get it that you want them to visit.

Call on Us at…

“Call on us” is another wonderful phrase you can use to ask someone to visit you.

When you ask someone to call you at the office for a discussion, they should come to your office for it. So, in this way, you’ve gotten them to visit if that was your intention.

So, this is a cool way to get someone to visit you if you don’t want to spell it out.

Below are ways to use this expression:

  • Call on us at the office, we can’t discuss this over the phone
  • Make sure to call on us at home, we’ve all you need there

You can also ask someone to drop in at your place if you want them to visit.

Using “drop in” is another good approach to get someone to come by your house or office without sounding obvious. Also, this is an informal expression that tells the person that they’re free to visit anytime.

When someone drops in on you, it means they visit you informally without arranging it.

Here’s how you can use this expression:

  • Why not drop in anytime you’re free
  • You can always drop in whenever you visit the town

other ways to say come visit us

“Pay a call” is another cool expression you can use to ask someone to visit you.

This is a great expression that you can use formally or informally. However, it’s more formal. So, if you want someone to visit you, you can ask them to pay a call at your place.

Here’s how you can use the expression:

  • Pay a call at my office in the evening, I have something for you
  • Kindly pay a call at my house later, we’ve some pending discussions

other ways to say come visit us

As you can see from this article, there are numerous ways you can ask someone to visit you without saying the word.

So, when next you want someone at your house or office or any location, try any of these examples to get you that visit.

They are tactical approaches that can hardly be turned down. Also, don’t forget to add yours.

Biden-Trump make dueling border visits as immigration dominates 2024 race

By Aditi Sangal , Elise Hammond and Michael Williams, CNN

Catch up: Trump and Biden point fingers at each other over immigration during visits to the border

From CNN staff

Former President Donald Trump walks at Shelby Park during a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday in Eagle Pass, Texas.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump had a split-screen moment during dual trips to the border on Thursday.

The likely frontrunners for their respective party's nomination in 2024 were about 300 miles apart in Texas — Biden was in Brownsville and Trump visited Eagle Pass. Immigration has dominated the early part of the 2024 campaign and both candidates have pointed a finger at the other on the issue.

President Joe Biden, second from the right, looks over the southern border on Thursday in Brownsville, Texas.

Both Trump and Biden got tours of the border and met with local officials during their visits.

Here's what else happened:

  • What Trump is saying: The former president has made Biden's handling of illegal immigration a centerpiece of his reelection effort. He has also vowed to conduct the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if he wins the White House in November. Trump continued those attacks during remarks at the border, stoking fears about migrants and crime and blaming it on Biden. He praised Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has tried to implement a new controversial security initiative.
  • What Biden is saying: The president's trip came as he considers sweeping executive action  to restrict migrants’ ability to seek asylum if they crossed illegally. Biden has repeatedly lambasted congressional Republicans for failing to pass a bipartisan compromise spending package that included significant concessions on border policy. Bipartisanship was a big theme of his remarks. He urged the Senate to reconsider the package and asked Trump to "join" him in finding an immigration solution.
  • About this bipartisan deal: The deal was killed in the Senate earlier this month, largely due to opposition from Trump. It included a new emergency authority that would allow the Homeland Security secretary to shut down the border if certain triggers are met,   raised the legal standard of proof to pass the initial screening for asylum, among other measures.
  • Meanwhile: A federal judge in Texas ruled to suspend enforcement of a controversial law that would allow state law enforcement agents to arrest and detain people they suspect of entering the country illegally. Without action from the court, the law was set to go into effect on Tuesday.

Community activists speak out against Trump and Texas governor's immigration policies

From CNN's Catherine Shoichet

Eagle Pass resident Jessie Fuentes didn’t mince words as he spoke with reporters Thursday morning hours before former President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott arrived in the border city.

“Mr. Trump, what you’re doing is you’re hurting the people that need the most help. Our community, if you were studying the demographics, it’s not easy being on the border. And this unwanted attention, this unwanted militarization of our community, is not welcome,” Fuentes said. “You are not welcome here, gentlemen. You’re not welcome in this community.”

Fuentes was among several community organizers and advocates who shared their views on different facets of their city Thursday morning.

Abbott announced plans to build an  80-acre base to house up to 1,800 Texas National Guard  members near Eagle Pass. Trump, who is visiting with the governor, said he would enact a widespread expansion of his administration’s immigration policies that would restrict both legal and illegal immigration if he wins back the White House in November.

Amerika Garcia Grewal told reporters she feared what she’s seen happening in Eagle Pass could happen across the United States if more isn’t done to stop it. She described seeing shipping containers and concertina wire placed along the city’s river banks and encircling the community’s golf course.

“I love Eagle Pass, and I hate that we’re being made an example of,” she said. “We must say hate has no home here, otherwise it’s just going to get worse.”

Trump stokes fears about migrants and crime during border visit

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Former President Donald Trump visits the US-Mexico border at Eagle Pass, Texas, as seen from Piedras Negras, Mexico, on February 29.

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday stoked fears about migrants coming into the United States as railed against President Joe Biden and his border policies as he stood feet from the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Trump attempted to tie crime in the US to recent increases in immigration — what he calls it “migrant crime” — despite there being  little evidence indicating a connection between immigration and crime . Many researchers actually argue immigrants are less likely to commit crimes.

The former president said he spoke on Wednesday to the parents of 22-year-old Laken Riley , who was found dead after jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Trump has repeatedly invoked Riley’s death as he pushes for his hardline immigration policies because her suspected killer is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.

“These are the people that are coming into our country, and they're coming from jails and they're coming from prisons and they're coming from mental institution and they're coming from insane asylums and they're terrorists. They're being led into our country. And it's horrible,” Trump said as he repeated the typical anti-immigrant rhetoric he uses on the campaign trail.

The former president praised Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has tried to implement a new controversial security initiative. The US Supreme Court recently allowed US Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire deployed by Abbott’s initiative at the US-Mexico border while the state’s legal challenge to the practice plays out.

Trump’s trip to the border comes not long after Trump torpedoed a bipartisan border bill so he could continue campaigning on Biden’s perceived weakness on the border.

Biden calls on lawmakers to reconsider bipartisan border deal that was killed in the Senate this month

President Joe Biden speaks during his visit to the US-Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas, on February 29.

President Joe Biden is urging lawmakers to reconsider a bipartisan border package that was killed in the Senate earlier this month, in large part due to opposition from the GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump.

“The US Senate needs to reconsider this bill and those senators who oppose it need to set politics aside and pass it on the merits not on whether it's going to benefit one party or benefit the other party," Biden said in remarks during a trip to the US-Mexico border on Thursday.

The president emphasized that the deal was on its way to being passed when it was derailed by "partisan politics." He said compromise is a very positive step in tackling immigration — an issue that has been at the forefront of the presidential primary elections.

"We need to act. It's time for the speaker and some of my Republican friends in Congress who are blocking this bill to show a little spine," Biden said, reminding the crowd that conservative leaders also supported the deal.

Biden to Trump: "Join me" on immigration reform

From CNN's Michael Williams

President Joe Biden held out an olive branch to his likely 2024 rival as both visited the South Texas border with Mexico on Thursday, urging former President Donald Trump to "join" him in finding an immigration solution.

Biden and Trump toured the border and delivered nearly simultaneous remarks about 300 miles apart in South Texas Thursday.

"So here's what I would say to Mr. Trump," Biden said during his remarks in Brownsville. "Set a planned policy position instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation."

A bipartisan border agreement showed promise before Trump came out against it in an apparent effort to use immigration as a wedge against Biden in his upcoming campaign to retake his office.

"Join me, or I'll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill," Biden said, addressing Trump directly.

"We can do it together," he added.

It's "long past time to act" on immigration, Biden says in border remarks

President Joe Biden speaks following a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday in Texas.

Immigration and asylum authorities “desperately need more resources,” President Joe Biden said during remarks from the US-Mexico border, adding it was “long past time to act” on immigration reform.

Biden said, “it’s time to step up, provide them with significantly more personnel and capabilities."

He said the country also needs more immigration judges to address a backlog of asylum cases.

Fact check: Trump again exaggerates about border wall construction

From CNN's Daniel Dale

Former President Donald Trump repeated one of his regular exaggerations on Thursday during a visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, claiming that “571 miles” of border wall were built during his presidency.

Facts First:   Trump’s “571 miles” claim is false, an even greater exaggeration than the  inaccurate “561 miles” and “over 500 miles” claims he has made at other points of his campaign . An  official report by US Customs and Border Protection , written two days after Trump left office and subsequently obtained by CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez, said the total number built under Trump was 458 miles — including both wall built where no barriers had existed before and wall built to replace previous barriers. Trump has sometimes put the figure, more correctly, at “nearly 500 miles.”

Fifty-two of the 458 miles built under Trump were “primary” wall that was built in parts of the border where no barriers previously existed. The rest was 33 miles of “secondary” wall that was built in spots where no barriers previously existed, plus 373 miles of primary and secondary wall that was built to replace previous barriers the federal government says had become “dilapidated and/or outdated.”

NOW: Biden makes remarks in Brownsville after meeting local officials on US-Mexico border

From CNN's Priscilla Alvarez, Kristen Holmes, MJ Lee and Michael Williams

President Joe Biden talks with the US Border Patrol and local officials, as he looks over the southern border on Thursday.

President Joe Biden is now making remarks during his trip to the US-Mexico border on Thursday. He is in Brownsville in South Texas.

The president’s motorcade arrived near the border earlier this afternoon. During his visit, Biden was expected to meet with Customs and Border Patrol agents, law enforcement and local leaders.

It comes as Biden  considers sweeping executive action  to restrict migrants’ ability to seek asylum at the US southern border if they crossed illegally. Biden has repeatedly lambasted congressional Republicans for failing to pass a bipartisan compromise spending package that included significant concessions on border policy.

Former President Donald Trump is also visiting the border on Thursday.

Trump blames Biden for border troubles as both tour South Texas

Former President Donald Trump talks near the bank of the Rio Grande River at Shelby Park during a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday, February 29, in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Former President Donald Trump harshly criticized President Joe Biden's handling of the border as the likely 2024 rivals take simultaneous tours of South Texas.

"The United States is being overrun by the Biden, migrant crime. It's a new form of vicious violation to our country," Trump said from near the border in Eagle Pass. "It's migrant crime. We call it Biden migrant crime, but that's a little bit long."

At the same time, Biden was receiving a briefing from Department of Homeland Security Officials near the border in Brownsville, about 300 miles away.

Biden is expected to give remarks soon.

Donald Trump in Wilmington: From tickets to parking, what to know for Saturday's rally

visit us tomorrow

Donald Trump, 2024 presidential candidate and former president, is expected to arrive in Wilmington on Saturday.

Trump's most recent visit to the Port City was in 2022 for his "Save America" rally.

This year, his visit coincides with another significant event for the former president, as Trump's criminal trial in New York began on Monday . Here's what you need to know about Trump's upcoming visit and what to anticipate.

Where to get tickets

The rally will be held at the Aero Center, located at 1830 Flightline Road, Wilmington, on the grounds of the Wilmington International Airport.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Tickets are available for free through the event webpage . Attendees can reserve up to two tickets online using their mobile number.

What to expect

On Saturday April 20, doors at the Aero Center are expected to open at 3 p.m., with the event expected to begin at 7 p.m., according to the event webpage.

Approximately 60 volunteers with the New Hanover County GOP will be present, according to Nevin Carr, chair of the New Hanover County Republican Party.

As of Tuesday, Carr did not have an estimate for the anticipated number of attendees at the rally, noting that the event is hosted by the Trump campaign team and not the New Hanover County Republican Party.

Thousands attended a similar Trump rally held at the Wilmington Aero Center in 2022 .

Security and traffic

Lt. Jerry Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said deputies will be present at and around the Wilmington International Airport on Saturday.

No new road closures or traffic patterns are to be expected in preparation of the event, Brewer said on Tuesday.

Traffic congestion may increase due to Saturday's rally coinciding with the Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area veterans welcome home celebration, set to begin at 9:30 p.m. at the airport. Ruth Smith, president of Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area, encouraged attendees of the welcome home event to arrive early and park safely.

Airport operations will continue as normal, Erin McNally, PR Manager with Wilmington International Airport, said in an email.

"We encourage travelers to allow extra time on Saturday to arrive and park due to the events occurring," McNally wrote. "Airport Boulevard will remain open and we do not anticipate any impact to airport operations."

Parking availability

Wilmington International Airport currently operates six parking lots on site. Handicap parking is available in all lots, according to the airport's webpage .

Thirty minutes of parking is free in each lot, with the additional rate being $1 per hour. Maximum daily prices vary by lot.

McNally said travelers and event attendees can look online to see which lots have availability before arriving on Saturday.

Will it be livestreamed?

Livestream details have not yet been released by Trump’s team.

For those who are unable to attend the rally, the StarNews will also provide full day live blog coverage on Saturday -- including photos, traffic updates, event details, and more.

Sunday's final round of 2024 rbc heritage suspended due to darkness after lengthy weather delay, share this article.

The last thing you want to hear is the horn on the golf course, but that’s precisely what fans at the 2024 RBC Heritage heard on Sunday. Twice.

The final round play at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina was suspended due to inclement weather at 4:28 p.m. ET. The final group featuring tournament leader Scottie Scheffler was in the fairway on the 11th hole when play was called.

On the CBS broadcast, the Tour’s Senior Director, TV rules and review analyst Mark Dusbabek made it clear that play was called due to lightning in the area and not because of the heavy rains that were falling. At 6:30 p.m. ET the final update came that play would resume at 7 p.m. ET, ending a two-and-a-half-hour delay. Less than an hour later at 7:47 p.m. ET the horn sounded to call play for the day due to darkness.

Nine players will return to the course at 8 a.m. ET Monday morning to finish he tournament. Scottie Scheffler, who has won three of his last four starts, holds a five-shot lead with three holes to play.

Biden signs a bill that could ban TikTok — after the 2024 election

WASHINGTON — Tucked inside the sprawling $95 billion national security package that President Joe Biden’s signed Wednesday is a provision that could ban TikTok, with an important catch: It won’t happen before the 2024 election.

That means TikTok, which boasts 170 million American users, will remain a force throughout the campaign, providing a platform for candidates to reach predominantly younger voters. An earlier version of the bill could have banned the popular video-sharing app prior to the election, but recent changes mean lawmakers and Biden may not face such an immediate voter backlash.

The new legislation provides nine months for TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States. The president can grant a one-time extension of 90 days, bringing the timeline to sell to one year, if he certifies that there’s a path to divestiture and “significant progress” toward executing it.

Even without the extension, the earliest a ban could start is January 2025. With the extension, it would be April. And with TikTok threatening legal action, the matter could get tied up in the courts for even longer. It’s a shift from an earlier House-passed bill that included a six-month window that could have triggered a TikTok ban before the November election.

A senior Republican aide said Democrats were responsible for the change. “Senate Democrats had been pretty consistent about wanting to extend that timeline,” the aide said.

The election was “definitely” something “conveniently addressed” by the new deadline, said a Democratic source close to the issue.

Other Democrats are assuring voters that ByteDance would sooner sell TikTok than risk a U.S. ban, a view some experts disagree with .

“TikTok ain’t going away. There is no more capitalistic entity than an organization controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. They’re going to sell it,” said Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., a member of the Armed Services Committee, who faces re-election this fall. “Young people will go on their TikTok tomorrow and they’ll still have it. And then the day after that, they’ll still have it. And the day after that, they’ll still have it,” Kaine said, adding that the only difference is it would be American-owned. “If you like it, you’re going to keep it.”

In endorsing the revised TikTok bill, Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said that extending ByteDance’s divestment period — what she called her “recommendation” — would help ensure there is “enough time for a new buyer to get a deal done.”

Other lawmakers who helped negotiate that change, including Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., agreed that the reason they pushed back the deadline was to improve the chances of a sale.

“This gives more time to make the divestment achievable,” said Krishnamoorthi, the top Democrat on the special committee investigating the CCP. “It made a lot of sense. That’s why, as you could tell, we didn’t lose any votes because of the change. In fact, we gained some votes — we went from 352 to 360 votes in the House.”

TikTok gave no indication that it would consider divesting, with a spokesperson saying in a statement: “This unconstitutional law is a TikTok ban, and we will challenge it in court.”

Trump, who tried his own ban, tells 'the young people' to blame Biden

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, sought to exploit a ban politically.

“Just so everyone knows, especially the young people, Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok,” Trump said on social media. “He is the one pushing it to close … Young people, and lots of others, must remember this on November 5th, ELECTION DAY, when they vote!”

It's a flip-flop for the former president, who signed an executive order in August 2020 to ban TikTok in 45 days if it was not sold. His statement cited “the threat posed” by China with its ability under Chinese law to force the app to grant access to Americans’ data and its potential to manipulate the algorithm to advance Chinese propaganda — the same reasons Congress and Biden favor a ban.

But the executive order was blocked in court, and the app persisted.

“I have every expectation that TikTok will be alive and well, no matter who is president,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. “Donald Trump is obviously trying to turn it into an election issue, but considering he was in favor of banning it, I think his warning is more baloney to use a polite word.”

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said opinions about TikTok and social media won’t “rival choice and democracy and immigration as a voting issue” in the 2024 election.

But Murphy said the political implications cut both ways.

“I am part of a group of pissed-off parents that feel that they’ve lost control of their kids’ lives. There’s undoubtedly another group of kids who are worried that they’re going to lose access to social media in the way that they have it now,” Murphy said. “But those are two very distinct voting groups and if you ignore the perils of social media, maybe you pick up some younger voters, but you lose some parents. So this is one of these issues where you have to see the full picture.”

Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., who voted against the TikTok ban over the weekend, said in an interview that there is a need to solve the national security and data concerns associated with the platform but added that banning TikTok would be disastrous for creators, organizers and activists.

“I think this is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, where we have people, communities that are able to organize, that are able to meet, that are able to find space for their businesses to grow" on TikTok, she said. “We need to actually think about what the consequences of that are, not political consequences alone, but the consequences holistically.”

'The battle lines aren't really clear'

A Republican working on Senate races said being tough on TikTok would have been an easier message to drive home in the campaign before Trump himself came out against the ban.

“It used to be a lot more straightforward,” this person said of how they could message against Democrats who use TikTok to campaign — which, despite Biden's intention to sign the ban legislation, includes his campaign . “But Trump is on the other side now. It makes the whole thing a little murkier. The battle lines aren’t really clear.”

Still, the Republican believes that a looming ban could have a big impact on the campaign trail for Democrats who use TikTok, saying candidates are using it exclusively as a tool to reach voters.

“It’s really clear they think it’s an important tool in their toolbox,” this person said.

In front-line battleground Senate states, Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown, of Ohio, and Bob Casey, of Pennsylvania, have accounts on the platform. So, too, do Democratic Reps. Ruben Gallego, of Arizona, and Colin Allred, of Texas, both running for Senate seats in competitive races this fall. All four voted in favor of the legislation that included the potential TikTok ban.

Speaking with the Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” on Sunday, Casey expressed hope the legislation would spur TikTok’s parent company to sell its American assets to a U.S. owner.

“I don’t think any American wants to put our country further at risk when it comes to China,” he said, adding, “I know a lot of Americans rely upon TikTok, and that’s understandable because of the value that it can provide to a small-business owner or others who need TikTok to communicate."

Brown’s campaign declined to comment. Campaigns for Gallego and Allred did not respond to requests for comment.

Biden's campaign said only that the campaign is on TikTok, without saying whether it would remain on it, and noted that the president doesn't have an official account on the platform.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., asked late Tuesday about a potential backlash to the TikTok crackdown, said: “Speaker Johnson put it in bill — the big supplemental bill. We had to get the supplemental bill passed as quickly as possible.”

Some of Biden's allies disagree with him on a TikTok prohibition.

Progressive Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., a Biden campaign surrogate, said he opposes a TikTok ban, citing free speech rights.

“The longer timeline helps marginally in pushing the ban until after the election and the bill, in any case, is likely to get struck down by the courts,” he said. “But rushing to pass it shows the complete disconnect between the Beltway establishment and many Americans.”

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., offered some advice for election candidates navigating a voter backlash to a TikTok ban: “I would tell them to follow their heart but take their brain with them.”

President Trump’s campaign committee ended March with $45 million on hand, up from $33.5 million at the end of February, an improvement as he seeks to close the fund-raising gap with President Biden, whose campaign had $85.5 million on hand. It’s not just about donors, though: The Trump campaign’s spending has slowed to a trickle – in March, it spent just $3.7 million, compared with Biden’s $29.2 million.

After two flashes of lightning, Donald Trump’s rally in North Carolina was canceled. Trump called into the rally and said he was advised not to land but promised he would return to the state soon. The National Weather Service has a severe thunderstorm watch in the area until 10 p.m.

Donald Trump is set to hold his first rally since his criminal trial in Manhattan began, a juxtaposition that his campaign is using in fund-raising messages. “They can’t keep me off stage!” Trump wrote in an email sent about 2 hours before he was scheduled to speak. “Did they think I would run and hide?”

The Biden campaign released a series of seven new digital ads featuring President Biden and former President Barack Obama on Friday night. The campaign said that “grassroots fundraising content signed by or featuring President Obama has generated more than $17.7 million,” helping to power Biden to a significant fundraising advantage over Donald Trump thus far.

Reporting from Wilmington, N.C.

Trump rally, a return to the campaign trail after a week on trial, is called off because of storms.

After former President Donald J. Trump sat in a courtroom in New York for much of the last week, Saturday night was supposed to herald a return to the campaign trail and the large rallies where he often gives long, freewheeling speeches.

With thousands gathered on the tarmac at an airport in Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Trump’s campaign was building anticipation. Two hours before he was set to speak, the campaign sent a fund-raising blast with a message from Mr. Trump: “They can’t keep me off stage! Did they think I would run and hide?”

Ninety minutes later, the skies darkened to charcoal and lightning flashed. As thunderstorms swept toward the area and the National Weather Service issued watches and warnings concerning dangerous winds and hail, the rally was canceled over safety concerns.

“We’ll make up for this very quickly at another time,” Mr. Trump said on a call he made into the rally that was broadcast over the speakers. “We’ll do it as quick as possible. I’m devastated that this could happen.”

But the cancellation, which Mr. Trump indicated was out of his hands, highlights the challenges that he may face as he tries to balance his presidential campaign with a criminal trial that will keep him busy through May.

For much of the last week, Mr. Trump’s public comments had been limited to social media posts and remarks to reporters outside the courtroom. His only campaign stop was at a bodega in New York City , in a state he overwhelmingly lost in the last two elections and that is not expected to be in play in November.

Saturday’s rally was expected to serve as a preview of the upcoming weeks, with Mr. Trump traveling on weekends to campaign in battleground states that are more central to his efforts to return to the White House.

He has repeatedly claimed that the trial is preventing him from campaigning in places like North Carolina, which he won in 2016 and 2020, but where Democrats are making a big push in November . Opening arguments are slated to start on Monday, and the trial is set to last six to eight weeks.

As is often the case with Mr. Trump’s rallies, the crowds began lining up hours ahead of his expected remarks. Among those gathered outside was a group wearing shirts with the logo of the Proud Boys, a prominent far-right extremist group. One person held a sign that read “Free All of the J6 Prisoners,” a reference to those serving sentences in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

Mr. Trump, who faces four criminal indictments that include charges tied to his efforts to overturn his election loss, has recently embraced dozens of Jan. 6 defendants. He has called them “hostages” and has said he would consider pardoning them.

In a statement, Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, criticized the group’s presence, pointing to remarks Mr. Trump made in a debate in 2020, in which he told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.”

“This is Donald Trump’s America: where white nationalists and violent far-right extremists are empowered and working families are left behind,” Mr. Moussa wrote.

Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, responded in a statement, “We don’t comment on stupid.”

Mr. Trump’s remarks were expected to face particular scrutiny given that he is under a gag order in his criminal trial that bans him from attacking witnesses, prosecutors, jurors and court staff, as well as their relatives and relatives of the judge. Prosecutors have said Mr. Trump has violated the gag order seven times, and there is a hearing about the issue on Tuesday.

Mr. Trump did travel to North Carolina earlier in the day, attending a fund-raiser in Charlotte in the afternoon. When he called into the rally, he told the attendees that he was minutes away from “flying in” to Wilmington but that the authorities “would prefer that we not come in” over safety concerns.

“I’m so sorry,” Mr. Trump said. “But we’ll do it again, and we’ll do it bigger and better. You have my promise.”

As the crowd left to seek shelter in their cars, vendors outside were still selling an array of merchandise, some of which had been created specifically for the occasion. One T-shirt promoted what it called the Wilmington stop on Mr. Trump’s “Save America” tour.

“I was there!” The shirt read. “Where were you???”

Kellen Browning reports on political campaigns in Nevada.

Nevada G.O.P. Senate primary heats up as the long shot goes after the front-runner.

Nevada’s once-sleepy Republican primary for Senate, which has been dominated by Sam Brown, a U.S. Army veteran, was jolted to life in the past week, when a deep-pocketed rival took aim at the front-runner.

Jeff Gunter, the ambassador to Iceland under former President Donald J. Trump, is unloading a $3.3 million advertising campaign with a MAGA message, according to his campaign, hoping to cut into Mr. Brown’s dominant lead over the crowded field.

A television ad from Mr. Gunter that began airing on Wednesday called Mr. Brown “the newest creature to emerge from the swamp,” tying him to Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, and deriding his primary opponent as “Scam Brown.”

Mr. Brown, a veteran who was wounded severely in Afghanistan in 2008, consolidated party support after entering the primary last July, earned the endorsement of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and has appeared at fund-raisers around the country with prominent Republicans. He has lapped his competitors in fund-raising, pulling in $2.4 million in the most recent quarter, according to fund-raising reports.

Mr. Brown has sought to employ the Trump campaign handbook, skipping debates and focusing his attention on Senator Jacky Rosen, the Democratic incumbent, rather than on his Republican rivals.

That changed on Thursday, when Mr. Brown appeared to address Mr. Gunter for the first time, at a private fund-raising event in Sparks, Nev., after Mr. Gunter accused him in ads and appearances of being disingenuous and not sufficiently pro-Trump.

“You might hear some noise out there, and people who show up from places like California from seven months ago, who want to name-call me this or that,” Mr. Brown told attendees, according to a recording obtained by The New York Times. “And that’s going to happen and we expect that out of people who were literally Democrats a year ago, to play that sort of game. But just keep your head down. You know who I am.”

His comments appeared to be focused on Mr. Gunter, a wealthy dermatologist and recent transplant from California who used to be a registered Democrat.

A group backing Mr. Brown’s campaign, the Duty First PAC, ran its first television ad this week since last year, a $322,000 reservation, according to the tracking firm AdImpact. Mr. Brown’s campaign declined to comment on Mr. Gunter.

Mike Berg, a spokesman for the N.R.S.C., suggested that Mr. Gunter’s previous party affiliation and residence would be an issue for Republican voters.

“California Democrats typically support policies like defunding the police, opening our southern border and letting violent criminals out of prison, so it would be surprising if Gunter caught on in a Republican primary,” Mr. Berg said.

Mr. Brown remains the strong favorite to win the June 11 primary. A recent poll commissioned by the N.R.S.C. and Mr. Brown’s campaign and conducted by the Tarrance Group, a Republican firm, found 58 percent of likely primary voters supporting Mr. Brown, while Mr. Gunter was in fourth place with 3.2 percent.

“I still think it’s Sam Brown’s race to lose,” said Chuck Muth, a Las Vegas-based conservative political consultant. The one thing that could sway the race, Mr. Muth said, would be if Mr. Gunter could earn the endorsement of Mr. Trump, who has not yet weighed in on the primary.

Mr. Trump made several posts seeming to express his approval for Mr. Brown on Truth Social, his social media platform, this month. “Democrats are terrified of a united Trump-Brown ticket in Nevada!” one read.

In an interview, Mr. Gunter acknowledged that the N.R.S.C. had tried to dissuade him from running, and he criticized Mr. Brown, arguing that he had little to point to as far as experience or expertise other than his time in the military.

“I salute his patriotism, he served his country, he was wounded in battle. But aside from those things, he’s basically a three-time loser,” Mr. Gunter said, citing Mr. Brown’s failed bid for the Texas State House when he lived in Dallas in 2014 and his loss in the 2022 Nevada Senate primary. (Mr. Brown also explored, but eventually dropped, a run for the Nevada State Assembly.)

Mr. Gunter, who is largely self-funding his effort and lent his campaign $2.7 million last quarter, faces his own challenges in his run. Aside from his previous record as a California Democrat — he says that he now lives in Nevada, and that “the Democrat party left me” — his tenure as ambassador to Iceland has been heavily scrutinized. A 2021 report from the Office of Inspector General found that he had fostered a “threatening and intimidating environment” at the embassy. Reporting from CBS detailed his seemingly erratic behavior, including his attempts to work remotely from California during the beginning of the pandemic.

Mr. Gunter said he was “running that place like clockwork,” and that the government report was “bogus.”
