The story of Vitas: How a little-known Russian singer became an overnight viral sensation

Russian pop singer Vitas performs during a vocal concert, the third leg of his 2007 China Concert Tour on June 19, 2007 in Chongqing Municipality, China. The 26-year-old tenor is known for his boy-like voice with a range that spans five octaves.

For many, Vitas’ flamboyant hit   7th Element   represents a kind of unofficial national anthem of the internet. The song, perhaps better known as “that weird Russian babbling song,” was once exclusively popular in China during Vitas’ pre-viral days, but it’s now almost inescapable since the singer’s revival in the western world in 2015.

You never forget the first time you watch the   7th Element   music video. Eyeing Vitas (real name Vitaly Grachov) in action, you probably felt deeply unnerved at his suspicious expertise in tongue-rolling and the cheeky “ooh, caught you looking” eye contact he makes with the camera. Wrap all these oddities in an outrageous silver jumpsuit and a black star-shaped crown, and there you have it: One of the internet’s most confusing spectacles.

Perhaps it’s surprising the video from 2001 didn’t catch on sooner. In the end   7th Element   eventually got its big moment in the West thanks to the internet. Vitas’ viral stardom began in June 2015, when Redditor jai_kasavin posted the music video, which was then quickly uploaded to YouTube channel vipnews2010, where it’s since been viewed over 20 million times. Finally, the singer’s magical meme potential was given the recognition it deserved.

Vitas’ bizarre abilities continued to gain traction in 2016 and 2017, when   7th Element   was re-spun by almost every content creator under the sun. Among the most memorable remixes are an (intentionally)   low-quality flute cover , a   mash-up   with comic viral rapper Big Shaq, a   10-hour version   of the song, and a   trap remix   by DJ Ariel (actually more bearable than it sounds).

As a result of the song’s success, a similar tongue-moving rollercoaster of his song   Sou l   also went viral on Facebook, under the caption, “Weird tongue man is back!”

The man behind the meme

Vitas may have viral fame to thank for his success in the West, but he achieved stardom in Russia long before. Originally from Odessa in Ukraine, the Russian-speaking singer first came to the fore in 2001 with his hit   Opera # 2 . Of course, Russians still found Vitas weird - the video for   Opera #2   did feature him playing a lonely fish-human hybrid, who spent his time practicing the accordion and distributing pro-merman propaganda leaflets on the street. However, his acclaim in Russia is in fact genuine. And to be fair, he has talent (he has a five octave vocal range, or so he says) and if you look past the comic effect, a quick listen to a few of his songs might even leave you pleasantly surprised.

Two full-length albums followed the success of   Opera #2   and Vitas was invited to the Kremlin in 2003 to perform in front of President Vladimir Putin, alongside Italian composer Lucio Dalla. It might be hard for some to imagine a world in which Vitas is taken as a serious musician but this was early 2000’s Russia, where Vitas was a star for all the right reasons. Perhaps most impressively, he acquired an enormous fanbase in China around the same time, boasting two sold-out tours there. He also landed a part in the Chinese version of the film   Mulan .

The Vitas renaissance

For those who know Vitas for the one tongue-rolling video, it may come as a surprise to learn that his memefication was actually a welcome revival for a man whose career had seemingly winded down. The most recent pre-viral publicity Vitas received came in a bizarre confrontation with a man falsely claiming to be his father on   Let Them Talk , the Russian TV equivalent of the   Jerry Springer Show . He also made headlines in 2013 when he hit a cyclist while driving.

Vitas therefore seems grateful for his internet-based revival, even if no one’s quite sure of the extent of irony among his new Western following. But the Vitas cult is undoubtedly curious as he’s more than the mere meme he appears to be at first glance. In a world tiring of reality TV, our sense of humor has grown stranger, and figures like Vitas once labeled as nothing more than eccentric outcasts are being revived for trolling purposes. Do we lambast videos like   7th Element   precisely because it makes us slightly uncomfortable? Is he not perfect “tag a friend and say nothing” material?

Whatever it is, Vitas doesn’t seem too put out about it.  And, with the official song of the 2018 World Cup in Russia undecided, could the man himself be rolled out for one final comeback?

T he moment Shakira’s fans have been waiting for has arrived. The Colombian superstar finally announced the first dates for her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour ( Women no longer cry). The news was released this Tuesday, just days after thrilling her fans with the announcement of her upcoming tour on stage at Coachella , where she arrived as a surprise special guest of Argentine producer Bizarrap.

The singer of Pies Descalzos revealed the first 14 dates of the tour, which will kick off in the United States and Canada. The first show will be on November 2nd in Palm Desert, California, and will close on December 15th in Detroit, Michigan.

Through social media, Shakira announced that official tickets for the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour will be available starting today, Wednesday, April 17th, on Ticketmaster . On this occasion, tickets can be purchased through a presale for Citi cardholders and are limited to a maximum of six per user.

The regular presale will take place on Friday, April 19th, at 10 a.m., and to gain access, it’s necessary to pre-register for the Wolfpack at Shakira.com . General sale will be on Monday, April 22nd.

How much do tickets cost?

In the United States, the ticket prices vary in each state. During the Citi presale tickets, the most exclusive areas range from $530 to $1,019 plus taxes. These tickets include benefits such as reserved front-row seats, exclusive merchandise, a meet-and-greet, and a photo opportunity with Shakira. For general tickets, prices range from $100 in some cities to $350 plus taxes.

On social media, the singer shared that, in less than two hours, the presale tickets for Citi members are almost sold out in Brooklyn, Miami, San Antonio, Chicago, Dallas, and Washington.

Rock County to Host the 2024 Para-Cycling Road National Championships

Ahead of Tour of America’s Dairyland series, Para-Cycling Road National Championships will take place June 11-13.

Rock County, Wis. is set to host the 2024 Para-Cycling Road National Championships ahead of the 15 th annual Kwik Trip Tour of America’s Dairyland (ToAD) series. With support from Associated Bank, the largest Wisconsin-based bank, and the founders of ToAD, para cyclists will compete June 11-13. They’ll have the opportunity to compete later that week in the Associated Bank Handcycle Series during this year’s iteration of ToAD.

“We, along with our partners in Janesville, the Janesville Velo Club, are extremely proud to host this year’s edition of USA Cycling’s Para-cycling Road National Championships along with the amazing athletes we have come to know and love over the last number of years watching them race their bikes; a pure fan favorite!” said ToAD Executive Director, Bill Koch.

With support from U.S. Paralympics Cycling, para-cyclists will have the opportunity to compete in a Road Race, Time Trial, and Team Relay.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with U.S. Paralympics Cycling to host this year’s National Championship. ToAD has been an exceptional partner as part of our National Criterium Series, and I look forward to seeing the terrific event they will host on our behalf.” said Kyle Knott, USA Cycling's Director of National Events.

Some of the PGA Tour’s best players will team up this week at the 2024 Zurich Classic , a partner event that features 2 rounds of best ball and 2 rounds of alternate shot. The 1st round from TPC Louisiana begins Thursday morning.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2024 Zurich Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele , the 2022 champions, are the favorites to win this week at +450. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are a team for the 1st time and have the 2nd-best odds to win at +750. Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris have the 3rd-best odds (+850) as a young tandem in this field.

Adam hadwin/nick taylor (+230).

Taylor is having a strong 2024 season with a win and 2 other top-12 finishes, and he joins fellow Canadian Hadwin for this team event. They finished 2nd last year and should be considered contenders to win this week.

Billy Horschel/Tyson Alexander (+333)

Horschel is fresh off a win at the Corales Puntacana Championship last week and teams up with the big-hitting Alexander, who finished 16th at the Cognizant Classic and 14th at the Valero Texas Open. Horschel won this event in 2018 with Scott Piercy as his partner.

Zurich Classic – Top-20 picks

Tom hoge/maverick mcnealy (+100).

Hoge came in the top-20 at the RBC Heritage last week despite making a 9 on the 72nd hole, showing all week that his ball striking is still very good.

Keith Mitchell/Joel Dahmen (+140)

Mitchell is one of the best iron players on tour and could easily have a win already this season after falling apart in Round 4 of the Valspar Championship, while Dahmen seems to be rounding into better form this season.

Hadwin/Taylor (-110) vs. Garnett/Straka (-110)

Straka had not been playing very well before finishing 12th at the RBC Heritage last week, while Hadwin and Taylor are each trending in the right direction.

Getting the tournament favorites to lead after Round 1 at +1200 is a good value, especially with it being the more predictable format (best ball) Thursday. They shot 59 in the opening round 2 years ago so they can obviously go very low in this format.
