VOLCANIC WONDERS OF REYKJANES GEOPARK

Reykjanes geopark in Iceland.

Unveil the fiery mysteries: Volcanic Wonders of Reykjanes Geopark

The Reykjanes Geopark is home to a striking, dramatic landscape comprising lava fields, volcanic craters, geothermal waters, and lava caves. This exciting day tour includes visits to the latest eruption site, the Seltún geothermal area, the bubbling mud pools of Gunnuhver, and the Bridge Between Two Continents!

Explore the rugged Reykjanes Geopark, a geologically significant region on a peninsula divided between two continents. The Reykjanes peninsula sits on the drift zone between the North American and the Eurasian continental plates, making it a true volcanic wonder. An expert guide will drive along the Reykjanes peninsula, with views of the North Atlantic Ocean, sweeping lava fields, and huge volcanic craters.

Your adventure starts with visiting Iceland's youngest volcano, the Fagradalsfjall volcano, and the surrounding lava fields. The volcano erupted in 2021 and 2022, and the guided hike up to the viewpoint takes about 40 minutes. You will be able to explore the devastating yet beautiful aftermath of this recent volcanic eruption, a glimpse of the raw power of Icelandic nature.

After the volcano hike, the tour stops by the Bridge Between Continents, where you can walk between the continental plates that divide the peninsula. This landmark represents the unique placement directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Before returning to Reykjavík, you will visit the largest mud pool in Iceland, Gunnuhver, where you can feel the ground shake from the enormous pressure released from the boiling water and steam. The tour also stops by one of the most iconic features of the Icelandic volcanic landscape, the boiling mud pools of Seltún, and the steaming colourful surrounding landscape. This stop is only available when the road to Seltún is open (it’s usually closed during the winter).

Volcanic Wonders of Reykjanes Geopark

The Fagradalsfjall volcano as seen from above in 2022

Explore bubbling mud pools and freshly formed lava fields on this guided hike around Reykjanes Geopark.

The Reykjanes Geopark is located on a peninsula divided between two continents. This unique placement of the Reykjanes Peninsula on the drift zone between the North American and the Eurasian continental plates makes it a true volcanic wonder.

As we drive along the Reykjanes peninsula, you are constantly in the presence of the roaring Atlantic Ocean, endless lava fields, and volcanic craters. An alien landscape, decorated by windblown palagonite and petrified troll formations.

Our adventure starts at the youngest volcano in Iceland, Fagradalsfjall, and its surrounding lava fields. The hike up to the craters takes about 40 minutes, where you will be able to explore the beautiful aftermath of this recent volcanic eruption. Since 2021, there have been 3 eruptions in the area, with the most recent one ending in August 2023.

After the volcano hike, we stop by the bridge between continents, where you can walk between the continental plates that divide the peninsula. This stop underlines this unique placement directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

On our way back to Reykjavík, we'll explore the largest mud pool in Iceland, Gunnuhver. You can feel the ground shake from the enormous power released from the boiling water and steam.

We’ll also visit one of the most iconic features of the Icelandic volcanic landscape: the boiling mud pools of Seltún and their steaming, colorful surroundings. This stop is only possible when the road to Seltún is open (usually closed during winter).

This hike is moderate in difficulty and may take longer than planned. Please be aware the walk is steep in some areas and there may be risk of rockfall.

For your safety, keep to the hills and ridges, and avoid valleys and dells. Gas pollution can accumulate in those areas, depending on the weather conditions. For the latest safety information on the newest eruption site, please visit Safe Travel Iceland .

Had a wonderful time even in the driving wind and snow. The supplied extra layer of waterproofs were very much appreciated, as was the hot drink on return. The horses were very sure footed, sturdy and friendly and all the staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Everyone on the trip - from first time riders to more experienced ones thoroughly enjoyed it. The scenery was very interesting too. Highly recommend it to all

Embarking on a volcano tour in Iceland takes you on an exciting journey into the heart of this land of fire and ice, where dramatic geological forces have sculpted the landscape for millennia. These tours offer the perfect blend of adventure, education, and natural beauty, giving travelers a unique opportunity to witness the raw power of volcanic activity.

As you set out on a volcano tour, you'll venture into Iceland's volcanic realms, rich in history and geological significance. These tours often feature expert guides who share their extensive knowledge, shedding light on the volcanic processes that have shaped Iceland's topography.

One of the remarkable aspects of volcano tours is the chance to witness volcanic features up close. Travelers may explore volcanic craters, lava fields, and even enter magma chambers of dormant or extinct volcanoes such as the Thrihnukagigur volcano in West Iceland .

On rare occasions, you can even witness an active eruption of volcanoes in Iceland from a close yet safe distance. Some of the most recent visitor-friendly ones occurred in the Litli-Hrutur and Fagradalsfjall  volcanoes on the Reykjanes peninsula , with eruptions taking place in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Beyond the natural wonders, volcano tours also emphasize safety and environmental conservation. Tour operators prioritize responsible exploration, ensuring these fragile and unique environments are preserved for future generations.

Hike to Volcanic Eruption Sites & Reykjanes Tour

Steaming new lava field near Meradalir Volcano eruption

Our Volcano hike and Geothermal tour is a great introduction to the impact volcanic activity has had on the landscape of Iceland. This tour explores the Reykjanes Peninsula which is located a short drive from the capital Reykjavík. The peninsula is situated on the fissure line of the mid-Atlantic ridge which is the cause of all the eruptions, earthquakes, and other seismic activity in the region. This tour offers a chance to experience geothermal wonders, natural phenomena, and places of stunning beauty.

The tour’s highlight is hiking in the area of the recent eruptions from 2021 until today near  Fagradalsfjall Volcano . The eruption in July 2023 took place close by, at Litli Hrutur and the newest eruption is also in the vicinity of the Sundhnukagigar Volcano eruption site which erupted in December 2023.

Along with this magnificent volcano site, our experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you to some of the other highlights that Reykjanes Peninsula has to offer. These include the boiling waters and sulphuric steamy air at the  Seltún  and  Gunnuhver  hot-springs, a walk between the American and Euroasian continental plates at the  Bridge between Continents , an excellent photo opportunity at Reykjanesviti lighthouse  and the black sand beaches of  Kleifarvatn Lake. The compact nature of the peninsula means that you fit a lot into this 10-hour day tour.

  • Hike to the eruption sites near Fagradalsfjall Volcano
  • Gunnuhver hot-springs
  • Reykjanesviti Lighthouse and coastal features
  • The Bridge Between Continents

Join the tour at our central Reykjavík meeting point or pay extra for pickup from various approved locations throughout the downtown area. When everyone is on board our comfortable minibus we will then depart from the capital, and begin our exciting road trip with an experienced, knowledgeable tour guide.

(Depending on the duration of the volcano hike, we may skip this stop)

Our first stop of the day is at Lake Kleifarvatn, the biggest lake in the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula. The lake is surrounded by fascinating geological features such as palagonite and sandstone mountains, formed in ancient subglacial volcanic eruptions. The lake is rimmed with black basalt beaches and beautiful rock formations sculpted by weather elements throughout the centuries. Kleifarvatn has been severely affected by seismic activity in recent years which led to the lake partially draining. This activity also created a new hot spring in one corner of the lake. The Lake’s folklore gives this stunning place an extra mysterious feeling.

Seltun geothermal area

(Depending on the duration of the volcano hike, we may skip this stop.)

Our next stop is at Seltún, where you can view the effect that geothermal waters can have on an environment. Here one can walk along wooden paths winding between boiling and hissing mud pools and streams of natural hot water flowing over the colorful ground and rock. The air is thick with the smell of sulfur emitted from these hot springs. Beneath the surface, the hot water dissolves minerals such as sulfur from the rocks and ground soil, leading to this distinctive stench. Two viewing platforms overhang the area allowing you a 360-degree point of view over the area.

We now reach the main event – hiking to the new volcano eruption site. Normally volcanic eruptions in Iceland occur in very remote and difficult-to-reach locations.

On the drive through Reykjanes, you will have seen moss-covered lava fields formed many thousands of years ago. The new and rapidly cooling lava fields will no doubt resemble them in years to come. We begin our hike and take the available route to the 2021 or 2022 eruptions at Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir Volcanoes. These new lava fields are vast and meet the recently erupted lava from the Litli-Hrut Volcano 2023 eruption.

We hike to the best viewing point, which can vary from day to day due to weather. The hike can take up to 2 hours each way.

Steaming Gunnuhver hot spring with geothermal power plant in the background

We proceed to Gunnuhver Hot Springs, the centerpiece of the UNESCO Global Geopark. This protected geothermal area is highly active, with steam vents and mud pools dotting the landscape.

In myth, the mischievous ghost of Gúðrun or Gúnna was trapped here in the mud pools. Perhaps the violent, barely repressed nature of the area can be explained by the presence of this angry ghost! “Hver” is the Icelandic word for a hot spring. So this is the hot spring of Gunna or Gunnuhver.

Iceland’s largest mud pool is located here and measures 20m in diameter. Like at Seltun, the smelly sulphuric steam lingers over the area.

Geothermal power plants are common in Iceland and Iceland is a world leader in harnessing this raw geothermal energy as well as in renewable energy. The nearby Reykjanes Power Station uses this thermal water for electricity generation and district heating for the locality.

We continue to the majestic Reykjanesviti lighthouse. Dating from the early 20th century, this popular lighthouse has guided ships for over a century with its light a shining beacon at a height of 63m above sea level. Situated on Bæjarfell Hill, the lighthouse is popular with amateur photographers and is also a good place to take in the breathtaking coastal features.

Here you can also admire Valhnúkamöl boulder ridge, sea cliffs, sea stacks, and skerries which are a haven and nesting ground for sea birds of all descriptions. Eldey Island in the distance is home to the world´s largest Northern Gannet colony, with over 16,000 breeding pairs. These coastal features are under constant attack by the furious waves of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Our last stop of the day is the Bridge between Continents. After witnessing the effects of seismic activity over the course of this day, here is an opportunity to visualize the root cause of all the wonders you have seen.

Reykjanes peninsula lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two major tectonic plates are moving apart from one another, the gap increasing by a few centimeters each year. This location is one of the few locations on earth in which this ridge is above sea level. The bridge between continents is a 15-meter footbridge that gives you a unique opportunity to walk between the two tectonic plates where North America and Europe drift apart.

We get back on the bus and begin our drive back to the city center which will take just under 1 hour and will see moss-covered lava fields, the remains of past volcanic eruptions in this region scarred and built from seismic activity.

And in South Iceland, we’ll take you to Kerið , a colorful crater where you can walk around its rim to see its beauty from all angles.

What can I expect to see on a Volcano and Lava tour in Iceland?

There are over 130 volcanoes in Iceland, and many of these are still active.

Our Snæfellsnes tours include trips to the Snæfellsjökul l National Park , where you can see a 700,000-year-old stratovolcano, the inspiration for Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”.

Or you can visit Kerið Crater on our South Iceland and Golden Circle tours , where you’ll see many other famous volcanoes like Katla , Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull (the one that stopped air traffic in 2010) along the way.

When volcanoes erupt, the lava flows reach out like giant fingers across the landscape, with the top cooling faster in the open air than below.

That creates a “top crust”, forming lava tunnels and caves where the fast-flowing lava has left behind hollowed-out areas. Over time, these become filled with fascinating ice formations like stalactites and stalagmites.

You can explore one of these fantastic underground features at Viðgelmir when you take for example our Silver Circle tour  in West Iceland.

Since historical records were kept, more than a third of all the lava flows in the world have happened in Iceland. One of the most famous is Eldhraun in South Iceland, caused by the Laki Fires of 1783. This lava flow was so massive that some think it changed the weather worldwide, leading to crop failures and may have been a factor in the French Revolution. You can see this area on our South Coast and Ring Road T ours .

But most visited lava fields in Iceland are the ones where Blue Lagoon is located. There you can relax in warm, geothermal waters and admire black, ancient lava fields. You can visit this place on our Golden Circle & Blue Lagoon Tour .

Iceland is filled with countless geological gems, but Hraunfossar is one of the rarest sights you can see!

Waterfalls usually tumble from the top of a cliff into a river, but the “Lava Waterfall” cascades gently from the middle of a 900-meter lava field called Hallmundarhraun .

The lava field was formed when a volcano trapped under the glacier Langjökull erupted. Now you can enjoy this marvelous spectacle from a series of viewing platforms. Hraunfossar is a stop on our Silver Circle tours.

How should you prepare to visit Iceland’s volcanoes and lava fields?

Iceland is only 500 kilometers wide, so our tours don’t take long to reach its volcanoes and lava fields.

Many of Iceland’s 130 volcanoes lie right next to the Ring Road , so you can enjoy seeing them without walking very far.

We know the best routes and the safest spots, so you can be sure of seeing these colorful landscapes without risk or too much effort!

All you need to do is wear sensible sturdy shoes, comfortable layers, and a waterproof coat.

And remember: don’t tread on the moss!

Discover Iceland’s volatile volcanic wonders on our thrilling tours!

This is your chance to explore Iceland’s incredible landscapes, a geological wonderland where fiery volcanoes and glittering glaciers constantly sculpt and carve the landscape.

It’s the most volcanically active place on Earth, where convection currents of magma boil up from deep underground to trigger earthquakes and eruptions, cracking the Earth’s crust.

Nowhere else can you see as many diverse geological features as easily and safely as on our guided tours of Icelands’ volcanoes and lava fields.

It’s like jumping in your personal time travel machine, taking you back to Earth’s beginnings, where the epic struggle of mighty forces shaped our world.

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss. But there are more stunning canyons in Iceland, like Vatnsjfjörður, Kólugljúfur or Þingvellir just to name a few.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Eiriksstadir is a reconstructed Viking-era longhouse in Iceland, which provides a glimpse into the architectural style of the early settlers. Hlíðartúnshúsin (located in Borgarnes) is a collection of several turf houses that were first built more than a hundred years ago. You’ll see a sheep barn, a cowshed, and even a hut used to store potatoes!

Iceland is also famous for turf-roofed churches, such as the iconic Viðimýrarkirkja and Hofskirkja, showcasing the continuation of this architectural tradition into religious buildings.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Once a little 17 th -century fishing village and trading station, Akureyri is now a bustling town. You’ll find funky cafés, restaurants, art galleries, design stores and a botanical garden to explore.

Even though it’s very close to the Arctic Circle, the 20,000 people who call Akureyri their home enjoy some of the country’s warmest and most stable weather.

As you walk the streets of Akureyri, make sure you take a look at the traffic lights. All the red lights are heart-shaped!

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Diamond Beach, also known as Jökulsárlón Beach, is a mesmerizing natural wonder located in Iceland. It is situated near the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float into the Atlantic Ocean.

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

It’s one of the busiest towns in West Iceland, a focal point for fishing, culture and commerce for a thousand years. But you can still feel its Viking roots wherever you look!

You’ll discover that it has a cheerful small-town vibe that makes it a delight to explore. So take a walk around its pretty streets and rocky shoreline, and enjoy the stunning views across the fjord to Hafnarfjall!

We usually arrive there around 5-6 pm, crossing the fjord over the second-longest bridge in Iceland, with stunning views to enjoy on both sides of the waters.

The town is surrounded by moss-covered lava fields and towering volcanic mountains. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, so there are frequent earthquakes. That means new hot springs are constantly opening up in this highly active area, even in people’s homes and gardens!

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Some even use geothermal power for carbon-neutral cooking! Make sure you try the tomato soup while you’re here!

We usually arrive there around 4 pm – which gives you plenty of time to enjoy this charming town.

The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! From exploring lava caves to witnessing volcanic eruptions up close, Iceland offers an array of experiences that will leave you in awe of the earth's forces.

Unveiling the Mysteries Underground: Exploring Lava Caves and Tunnels

Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the surface of a volcano? In Iceland, you can venture into the depths of the earth and explore lava caves and tunnels that were formed during volcanic eruptions. These natural wonders provide a glimpse into the fascinating world beneath our feet.

One of the most remarkable experiences is the Inside The Volcano Tour at Thrihnukagigur Volcano. This unique journey takes you inside the magma chamber of a dormant volcano, where you can witness the vibrant colors and intricate formations created by centuries of volcanic activity. Descending 400 meters into the heart of the volcano, you'll be immersed in a surreal environment that few have had the privilege to witness.

For those seeking a more adventurous underground experience, caving tours offer a chance to explore Iceland's vast network of lava tunnels. Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel Tour takes you deep into tunnels that were carved by rivers of lava thousands of years ago. As you navigate through the underground passages, you'll be amazed by the otherworldly shapes and colors that adorn the walls. And if you visit during the winter months, you might even encounter beautiful icicles hanging from the ceiling, adding an extra touch of magic to your journey.

Shaping the Landscapes: The Impact of Lava on Iceland's Scenic Beauty

Iceland's dramatic landscapes are a testament to the power of volcanic activity. Over the centuries, eruptions have shaped the country's terrain, creating breathtaking vistas that seem to belong to another world. From towering mountains to expansive lava fields, each landscape tells a story of Iceland's fiery past.

One such iconic location is Dimmuborgir, known as the "Dark Castles" in Icelandic folklore. This volcanic rock formation is said to be the home of mythical creatures and offers a glimpse into the rich mythology of the country. As you explore the labyrinthine paths of Dimmuborgir, you'll be surrounded by towering rock formations and eerie silence, creating an atmosphere that feels both mystical and enchanting.

Iceland's Mighty Volcanoes: A Journey into Fire and Ice

Mount hekla: the queen of iceland's volcanoes.

Mount Hekla is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Iceland's volcanic wonders. With a history of frequent eruptions, this majestic volcano is a sight to behold. Hekla last erupted in 2000, and since then, scientists have been closely monitoring its activity. The pressure inside the volcano is rising, indicating that another eruption may be imminent. As you gaze upon the towering peak of Hekla, you can't help but feel a sense of anticipation and awe.

Hiking to the summit of Hekla is a dream for many adventurers. The 1491-meter trek offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, as well as a chance to witness the raw power of nature up close. However, it's important to note that hiking Hekla requires careful planning and preparation. The weather conditions can be unpredictable, and the terrain can be challenging. It's recommended to join a guided tour to ensure your safety and make the most of this extraordinary experience.

Katla Volcano: A Sleeping Giant

Located beneath the icy expanse of Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, Katla Volcano is one of Iceland's largest and most active volcanoes. With a history of frequent eruptions, Katla is closely monitored by scientists for any signs of activity. Although there have been no recent major eruptions, the volcano's long dormancy period raises the question of when it will awaken once again.

Exploring the ice caves that form within the glacier is a popular activity for visitors to Katla. These ethereal caves offer a unique perspective on the volcanic activity that lies beneath the surface. As you wander through the crystal-clear ice formations, you'll be surrounded by a world of shimmering beauty. It's a surreal experience that showcases the delicate balance between fire and ice in Iceland.

Eyjafjallajokull Volcano: A Tale of Destruction and Resilience

Eyjafjallajokull Volcano gained international fame in 2010 when its eruption caused widespread disruption to air travel across Europe. The massive ash cloud that blanketed the skies grounded flights for several days, leaving travelers stranded and highlighting the immense impact that volcanic activity can have on our modern world.

Today, Eyjafjallajokull is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The Thorsmork Volcano Hike takes you through the stunning Thorsmork Valley, where you can witness the aftermath of the volcano's eruption. Witness the incredible history of the region’s most recently active volcano, Fagradalsfjall, which has erupted in recent years, including 2023, 2022 and 2021. You will also encounter the fascinating Gunnuhver Hot Springs, where steam from geothermal reservoirs combines with surface water.

This gives birth to mud pools and accompanying gases like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. The last part of the tour showcases the history of the Reykjanes Lighthouse.

The first lighthouse stood on Valahnúkur in 1878, yet earthquakes and powerful waves destroyed it. Since then, a new lighthouse has been built on Bæjarfell Hill, serving as a testament to resilience and change in the area.

volcanic wonders tour iceland

Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice, with the country's many spectacular volcanoes give it the 'fire'! Here are 6 of the best volcano tours that you can take!

The country’s numerous stunning glaciers are where the ice part is derived from, but the fire, quite literally, comes from the many spectacular volcanoes which are dotted around the country.

Visitors flock from across the globe to see these mighty and ancient naturally occurring structures. While people generally think about hot boiling lava spewing from a gigantic mountain when they think of the word ‘volcano’, not all of Iceland’s volcanoes are active (meaning they aren’t going to erupt any time soon – fortunately for us!). In fact, there are many different kinds of volcanoes to see in Iceland, each of which offers its own unique experience.

Arctic Adventures’  selection of volcano tours are as varied as the volcanoes themselves. With so much to choose from, it can be difficult to decide on which tours to go on. We’re here to help though, with five of the best volcano day tours that Iceland has to offer, as chosen by our team of professional Arctic Adventurers!

6. The Mount Eyjafjallajökull Super Jeep Tour

Driving Super Jeep in Thorsmork Iceland

Super Jeep Tour

Sometimes known as “the volcano that caused all the trouble”,  Mount Eyjafjallajokull  became famous (or is that infamous?) in 2010 when a series of powerful eruptions caused absolute chaos, both in the local area and much further afield.

Intense heat generated by the volcanic activity caused the glacier at the top of  Eyjafjallajökull to melt. This, in turn, created meltwater which powered through nearby rivers and led to the evacuation of 800 local people. Eyjafjallajökull also managed to spew enough volcanic ash into the air to have a huge area of important European airspace to be closed for over a week. This meant that many inter-European and trans-Atlantic flights were shut down and 5 million travelers were stranded!

The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull at Fimmvörðuháls Pass in Iceland

Eyjafjallajokull Eruption

Thankfully, Mount  Eyjafjallajökull hasn’t caused any trouble in the best part of a decade and is unlikely to do so again for a very long time (the last eruptions before 2010 happened in the 1920s), so now would be a good time to go visit this mischievous mountain. Jeep tours are a great way to explore rugged landscapes like this.

The  Eyjafjallajökull Super Jeep Tour  is our favorite way to visit Mount Eyjafjallajökull as it allows you to check out other awesome natural Icelandic landmarks including gushing waterfalls and Gigjokull Glacier, one of the many striking  Icelandic landscapes featured in  Game of Thrones .

5. Visit Mount Hekla, the Queen of Iceland

The active Hekla volcano in South Iceland

Mountain Hekla

Hekla  is referred to as “the Queen of Iceland” due to the fact that this huge volcano, located in the South of Iceland, absolutely dominates the landscape around her. Not only does Hekla strike an imposing figure, standing an impressive 1,488 meters tall at her summit, but she has also transformed the area around her.

As one of the world’s most productive volcanoes, Hekla has produced  8 km 3  of lava in the last millennium. So much so in fact, that the surrounding landscape, which was once heavily forested, is now largely covered in ash and bare rock. Life is resilient, however, and plants have started making a comeback since Hekla’s last eruption in the year 2000, with hardy mosses and grasses appearing in the shadow of the mountain. And where there are plants, animals are never far behind – life finds a way.

While many call Hekla Iceland’s Queen, in medieval times, they had a very different name for this mountain; “The Gates of Hell”. It earned this fearsome nickname after a massive eruption took place in 1341. Onlookers saw the silhouettes of countless birds fleeing from the eruption and mistook them for the souls of the damned escaping from the depths of hell!

Best Hiking Trail in Iceland Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar

Mount Hekla cannot be fully appreciated unless the surrounding area is taken into account as well. The best way to do this is on  the Landmannalaugar hiking tour , which allows visitors to take in the extraordinary sights of the region, including lava fields, hot springs and clear blue lakes, at their own pace.

4. Take A Tour Inside A Volcano!

Inside the Volcano

Now that we’ve discussed a couple of different ways to see a volcano from the outside, how would you feel about climbing inside one? That’s exactly what you can do on Arctic Adventures’  Inside the Volcano Tour , a real-life  Journey to the Centre of the Earth ! (Fun fact: 2008’s version of  Journey to the Centre of the Earth , starring Brendan Fraser, was one of  the many movies filmed in Iceland )

On this epic tour, you get to visit Thrihnukagigur Crater, the “Three Peaks Crater”, a dormant volcano not far from  Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik . This is a truly unique experience, as Thrihnukagigur is the only volcano in the world where visitors can take an elevator all the way down to the magma chamber. While that might sound scary, it is totally safe as the magma drained away long ago – the last eruption having taken place in the 2 nd  Century.

This small group tour allows you to descend 180 meters down into a 4,000-year-old volcano – there is literally nowhere else on Earth where you can do this!

3. Explore Iceland’s Mystic Underworld

Lava Cave Tours Katla Ice Cave Caving in Iceland

Those of us who want to experience the ultimate Icelandic ‘fire and ice’ experience should look no further than the  Katla Volcano Ice Cave Tour , which combines the best of both worlds; a mighty volcano and a stunning glacier!

Departing from the scenic coastal village of  Vík , Iceland’s southernmost populated area, this tour takes visitors a bit off the beaten track and out into a wonderful world which typifies everything people love about Iceland.

South Iceland Katla Volcano Powerful Eruption in Iceland

Katla Volcano Eruption in Iceland

Starting out in one of Arctic Adventures’ action-seeking super jeeps, the tour brings you to  Myrdalsjokull Glacier , where all sorts of frozen wonders await, including an awe-inspiring ice cave. Here, an expert guide will show you around and regale your crew with all sorts of fascinating facts about this unusual and majestic natural wonder.

Of course, in Iceland, fire is never too far from the ice. In this case, the fire is provided by Katla Volcano, one of Iceland’s biggest. Since Katla is considered to be an active volcano, there will be no climbing around inside this one, unfortunately! There is little to fear, however, as the volcano has not erupted properly in over 100 years.

While Katla is unlikely to be at its explosive worst when you come to visit, it remains a magnificent sight, standing nearly 5,000 feet tall. It does rumble from time to time though, which makes for a very intimidating experience indeed!

Best time to visit volcanic sites in Reykjavik

When you think of Iceland, what comes mind? For many, it's the spectacular auroras, the stunning glacial landscapes, and yes, the awe-inspiring volcanoes. Specifically, the volcanoes in Reykjavik have a unique charm that attracts travelers from all over the world. This guide is your go-to resource for an adventure-packed journey through Reykjavik's volcanic wonders.

So, you've decided to explore the volcanoes in Reykjavik. Great choice! Now, let's talk about getting there. Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, is impressively connected to the rest of the world. Here's how you can reach this volcanic city:

  • By Air: Keflavik International Airport is your gateway to Reykjavik. Major airlines like Delta, British Airways, and Icelandair have regular flights. It's about a 40-minute drive from the airport to the city center. Convenient, isn't it?
  • By Sea: If you're up for an adventurous journey, consider taking a ferry. The Smyril Line operates a ferry from Denmark and the Faroe Islands to Seyðisfjörður, a town on the east coast of Iceland. From there, it's a scenic, day-long road trip to Reykjavik.
  • By Road: Once you're in Iceland, a network of well-maintained roads and highways connects Reykjavik to other parts of the country. Renting a car and driving around is a popular choice among visitors. You'll be able to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes at your own pace!

Remember, no matter how you choose to get to Reykjavik, the journey is just the beginning. The real adventure lies in exploring the city and its fascinating volcanic sites!

The Volcanic History of Reykjavik

Before we jump into exploring the volcanoes in Reykjavik, let's take a step back in time and learn about their history. Believe it or not, Reykjavik's history is intricately tied to volcanic activity. In fact, the city itself sits on a volcanic field that dates back around 700,000 years!

What makes Reykjavik's volcanic history even more fascinating is the fact that the entire city is built on lava. That's right — the building blocks of Reykjavik are volcanic rocks that cooled and solidified after a volcanic eruption. Can you imagine living on a city built on lava?

But how did Reykjavik end up with so many volcanoes? The answer lies beneath the Earth's surface. Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a massive mountain range that stretches down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The Ridge is a boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. As these plates move apart, magma from deep within the Earth rises to the surface, resulting in frequent volcanic activity.

Over thousands of years, this volcanic activity has shaped Reykjavik's unique landscape, creating a city that's a dream come true for volcano enthusiasts. From lava fields to volcanic mountains, the city is a living testament to the power and beauty of nature. So, are you ready to discover the volcanic wonders of Reykjavik?

Volcanic Sites to Visit Within the City

Now that we've covered some history, let's get down to the fun part: exploring the volcanoes in Reykjavik! The city is home to several fascinating volcanic sites, each with its own unique charm. Here are a few that you should definitely add to your itinerary:

Öskjuhlíð Hill: This isn't just any ordinary hill. Öskjuhlíð is actually a dormant volcano! Covered in trees and crisscrossed with pathways, it's a great place for a leisurely stroll. And the best part? It's right in the heart of the city.

Elliðaárdalur Valley: Nestled within Reykjavik, this valley is a testament to Iceland's volcanic past. The valley's beautiful river, Elliðaár, cut its path through a lava field. It's not every day you get to hike through a lava field, right?

Grótta Island Lighthouse: While not a volcano, this lighthouse offers stunning views of Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-capped stratovolcano located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. On a clear day, you can see this majestic volcano right from the heart of Reykjavik!

Exploring these volcanoes in Reykjavik is like stepping into a natural history museum, except with fresh air and stunning views. So, ready to lace up your hiking boots and start exploring?

Volcano Hiking Trails Near Reykjavik

Stepping outside the city limits, you'll find a wealth of volcano hiking trails near Reykjavik. Ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs, there's something for everyone, regardless of your hiking experience. Here are three trails that offer breathtaking views of volcanoes:

Þríhnjúkagígar Crater Trail: Fancy walking inside a volcano? Well, Þríhnjúkagígar gives you just that chance! This trail leads to a dormant volcano that you can actually enter. How's that for a unique experience?

Helgafell Volcano Trail: This trail offers a relatively easy hike to the top of Helgafell, a dormant volcano. When you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Reykjavik and the surrounding area.

Esjan Mountain Trail: If you're up for a challenge, the Esjan Mountain Trail is for you. This trail takes you up the side of Esja, a mountain range formed by volcanic activity. It's a bit of a climb, but the view from the top is worth every step.

These trails provide a fantastic opportunity to experience the volcanoes in Reykjavik and beyond, up close and personal. So what are you waiting for? Grab your gear and hit the trails!

Volcanic Lakes and Hot Springs to Explore

After exploring the amazing volcanoes in Reykjavik, you might want to relax and rejuvenate. The city and its surroundings are blessed with numerous volcanic lakes and hot springs, perfect for a soothing soak. Here are a few you should definitely check out:

Blue Lagoon: No visit to Reykjavik would be complete without a trip to the famous Blue Lagoon. This geothermal spa is located in a lava field and offers an unforgettable bathing experience. Imagine soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters while surrounded by a beautiful lava landscape.

Grótta Nature Reserve: This nature reserve is home to a small, natural hot spring. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. But remember, it's a nature reserve, so be respectful of the environment.

Laugarvatn Lake: Located a bit out of town, Laugarvatn Lake is worth the trip. Beneath its surface are hot springs that heat the lake, making it warm enough for swimming, even in winter!

So why not take a dip in one of these volcanic lakes or hot springs? It's the perfect way to experience the geothermal wonders of Reykjavik and unwind at the same time.

Tours of Volcanic Caves and Tunnels

Exploring the volcanoes in Reykjavik doesn't stop at the surface. There's a whole underground world waiting for you to discover! Let's talk about some of the amazing volcanic caves and tunnels you can tour.

Thrihnukagigur Volcano: This dormant volcano offers something truly unique. You can descend into the magma chamber of the volcano itself! Don't worry, it's completely safe. The magma chamber is colorful and enormous — the Statue of Liberty could fit inside!

Lava Tunnel Raufarhólshellir: One of the longest lava tubes in Iceland, it is a must-visit. You can go on a guided tour of this lava tunnel and witness the fascinating volcanic formations up close.

Vidgelmir Lava Cave: This is the largest lava cave in Iceland. With a guided tour, you can see incredible lava formations and even ice formations in the wintertime.

Exploring these caves and tunnels gives you a unique perspective on the volcanic activities that have shaped Reykjavik and its surroundings. It's an underground adventure you won't forget!

Volcanic Museums and Exhibits in Reykjavik

When it comes to understanding the volcanoes in Reykjavik, nothing beats visiting the city's informative volcanic museums and exhibits. Here, you'll find interactive displays, educational resources, and knowledgeable staff who can answer all of your burning questions about volcanic activity.

The Lava Center: This interactive, high-tech museum provides a comprehensive view of the volcanic activity, earthquakes, and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. It's perfect for both kids and adults — you'll feel like a true volcano expert after your visit.

Perlan - Wonders of Iceland: This is not just a museum, it's an experience. With a planetarium, a man-made ice cave, and an impressive exhibition on Icelandic volcanoes, it's a one-stop-shop to learn about all things Iceland.

Volcano House: This small museum in downtown Reykjavik offers two captivating documentaries about Iceland's most famous eruptions and a hands-on geological exhibit where you can touch different types of volcanic rocks.

These museums offer a fascinating insight into the explosive world of volcanoes in Reykjavik. They're a great way to add some educational fun to your visit, especially if the weather is less than cooperative for outdoor adventures.

Safety Tips for Exploring Volcanic Sites

Exploring the volcanoes in Reykjavik is an exciting adventure, but safety should always be your top priority. Here are a few practical tips to help you stay safe while experiencing these natural wonders.

Wear the Right Gear: Sturdy shoes are a must for hiking on rugged, uneven volcanic terrain. Don't forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection against the sun. And remember, Icelandic weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is a smart move.

Stay Hydrated: Hiking can be hard work, especially when you’re ascending a volcano. Always carry enough water with you, and maybe a snack or two for extra energy.

Respect the Rules: Volcanic areas can be delicate ecosystems, and some can still be geologically active. Stick to marked paths, heed warning signs, and never attempt to approach a volcano that is off-limits.

Know Your Limits: Volcano hiking can be demanding. If you are not an experienced hiker, consider joining a guided tour. They know the routes, the weather conditions, and most importantly, they know how to keep you safe.

Remember, the thrill of exploring volcanoes in Reykjavik should never compromise your safety. Arm yourself with knowledge, preparation, and respect for nature's power, and you're set for your volcanic adventure.

Where to Stay in Reykjavik

When it comes to finding a place to rest your head after a day spent exploring the volcanoes in Reykjavik, you're in luck. Reykjavik is packed with accommodation options that cater to every taste and budget.

For the Budget Conscious: If you're watching your pennies, consider staying in a hostel. Kex Hostel and Loft Hostel are popular options in Reykjavik. They offer a mix of private rooms and dormitories, and they're both centrally located.

For a Bit of Luxury: If you're looking to splurge, consider booking a room at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica or the Radisson Blu Saga Hotel. Both offer top-notch services, comfortable rooms, and stunning views of the city.

For a Home Away from Home: If you prefer having your own space, consider a vacation rental. Websites like Airbnb offer a wide range of options, from compact city-center apartments to larger houses on the outskirts of town.

Remember, wherever you choose to stay, make sure it's a place where you can rest and recharge. After all, you'll need your energy for all the volcano exploring you'll be doing!

When it comes to exploring volcanoes in Reykjavik, timing can make a big difference. The best times to visit depend on what you're looking to get out of your trip.

For Mild Weather and Longer Days: Consider visiting between June and August. During this time, Reykjavik enjoys its warmest temperatures and longest days, which are perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring volcanic sites. Plus, the Midnight Sun phenomenon—where the sun barely sets—can be a unique experience.

For the Northern Lights: If you dream of seeing the Northern Lights, the best time to visit is during the colder months from September to March. Though the weather can be chilly and daylight hours are shorter, the clear, dark skies offer an excellent chance to witness this natural spectacle.

For Fewer Crowds: If you prefer a more peaceful vacation, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October. During these times, you'll find fewer tourists at the volcanic sites, and accommodation prices tend to be lower.

No matter when you choose to visit, remember to pack appropriate clothing. Even in summer, temperatures in Reykjavik can be cool, especially in the evenings. So, don't forget your warm jacket, even if you're visiting in July!

If you enjoyed this blog post on exploring Reykjavik's volcanic wonders and are inspired to capture the beauty of Iceland through your lens, we recommend checking out the workshop ' Travel Photography: Chasing the Northern Lights ' by David Rocaberti. This workshop will teach you the skills and techniques needed to capture stunning photographs of the Northern Lights and other natural wonders Iceland has to offer.

A most recent eruption started on the 3rd of August 2022 in Mt. Fagradalsfjall and ended on September 21st. Even though the eruption site is currently dormant, geologists forecast that this eruption is only a small chapter of a bigger story. Iceland is likely entering a volcanic period with many more eruptions like this on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

These last two volcanic eruptions have not posed any threat to the nearby populated areas or infrastructure. Neither have they caused any disruption to international aviation.

So if you have booked a flight or a tour in Iceland, you can continue with your travel plans.

It's important to dress according to weather and wear good hiking shoes. We recommend packing a lunch, as the hike to the eruption site is challenging and can take up to 2 hours.

Our partners at Iceland Camping Equipment can provide you with the perfect gear for a small fee, please rent your gear at least 24 hours prior to departure.

We selected the Wilderness of Strúter Trail rather than the more popular Landmannalaugar trek since we wanted to be far from the maddening crowd. It exceeded our expectations! To get to the starting point of this tour in Reykjavík, most people fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF) . From there, you can take a bus, shuttle, or taxi to Reykjavík.

You’ll meet your guide at the BSI central bus terminal in Reykjavík at 7:30 am on Day 1 of the tour. Due to a very early start, please arrive in Reykjavik at least a day prior to the first day of the adventure.

Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice”, has forever lived with volcanic activity. Minor and major eruptions have occurred every few years since the island was formed. Some of Iceland’s appeal, aside from sheer natural beauty, surely stems from this very fact.

However, every new eruption, such as the recent Reykjanes Peninsula fissure, will make some travelers, tourists, and adventurers uneasy, especially given the fact that sensationalist media is not immune to misinformation and speculation.

Since we work with a number of expert local guides in Iceland, we thought we’d share their input and fill you in on what’s actually going on.

First of all, air traffic has not been affected. Flights to and from Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík Domestic Airport are operating as they always do.

Second, the effects of volcanic activity have been localized, with some roads closed, and all services in Iceland operating as usual. Reykjavik, the capital, is around 40 km (25 miles) away from the volcanic fissure, and life there is as normal as ever.

And third, trips offered by 57hours are taking place much further away, and are thereby even less likely to be affected by the volcanic activity, being perfectly safe for adventurers. Naturally, the authorities (and guides) are monitoring the situation and doing everything possible to keep both local residents and visitors safe and well informed.

In case you have any additional questions or dilemmas, feel free to get in touch with either your guide or 57hours. For more information, please visit:

https://safetravel.is/ https://www.visiticeland.com/article/volcano-info

Or watch the video with Dr. Matthew Roberts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office explaining the recent volcanic activities in Iceland: https://youtu.be/QA3-BXYuYrw?feature=shared

We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to. For more information on travel recommendations and restrictions in Iceland, please refer to Iceland’s foreign travel advice .

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

Empty Roads and Spewing Lava: 4 Months Into Iceland’s Eruptions

The scene is as spectacular as it is dangerous: flowing rivers of shimmering lava and a dramatic plume of toxic gas.

That image has been the reality for much of the past four months in the Reykjanes Peninsula in southern Iceland, which the country’s tourism website has called a “geological wonder where lighthouses outnumber villages.”

A series of volcano eruptions began in December after hundreds of earthquakes shook the peninsula, cracking open a fissure that sent lava spewing into a residential neighborhood for the first time in more than four decades. The volcanic system has erupted several more times since then.

Grindavik, a fishing town of more than 3,500 people about 30 miles southwest of the country’s capital, Reykjavik, has been evacuated, and the nearby Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal spa, has been largely closed since early November.

A mountain looms over a collection of short buildings that stand amid a snowy, rocky terrain.

While much of life goes on in the rest of Iceland, the eruptions have had an effect beyond the peninsula, disrupting the tourism operations of a country that relies heavily on visitors .

Icelandair said it has seen a negative impact on bookings because of the threat of the eruptions. While the overall number of passengers carried by the airline in February increased compared to last year, the number flying to Iceland dropped by 8 percent, according to the airline.

While the eruptions continue, the situation has been “steady” this week, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the country’s weather service. But lava continues to flow from three craters toward Grindavik, the service said.

The eruptions also produce high levels of gas pollution. The concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air is “very unhealthy,” according to the Met Office, which added that “people are likely to experience respiratory symptoms if exposed.”

The Blue Lagoon, a spa and hotel complex in Grindavik, is closed at the moment. It first temporarily shut its doors in November after thousands of earthquakes, signs of the impending eruption, hit the region.

The resort has reopened occasionally, but has been closed for more than 85 days since then, the hotel said in an email. It is currently on its sixth closure since Nov. 9.

Lava damaged several houses in Grindavik when it breached a defense wall that was supposed to route it away from the town.

Around the town, earthquakes caused cracks in the streets. Breaks in the roads have been filled with gravel.

The authorities continue to warn visitors to stay away from the eruption site. “The edges of the new lava field are unstable and large chunks of lava can fall suddenly,” the Met Office said.
