Are cruises all-inclusive? What's actually included in your cruise fare

Andrea M. Rotondo

You might have heard that cruise fares are all-inclusive, but if you're new to cruising, that term could be misleading.

While mainstream cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival offer incredible value, covering lodging, meals and transportation in their cruise fares, they are not 100% all-inclusive. In other words, not every single thing is included in your fare. You'll pay an additional cost for all kinds of extras, including bar drinks, meals at specialty restaurants, specific activities and even specialty coffees.

Of course, a few luxury, small-ship and expedition cruise lines do bundle more amenities into their fares. You just need to pay attention to what's included and what's not when choosing a cruise line and evaluating its fares.

Since most cruises are not all-inclusive, let's talk about what comes with your cruise fare and what doesn't. We'll also offer tips on how to create a more inclusive cruise experience the next time you sail.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Yes and no.

In the sense that your room, food, certain beverages, select onboard entertainment and transportation between ports come with your basic cruise fare, then yes, cruises are all-inclusive.

However, if you compare a cruise to an all-inclusive experience at a resort with free-flowing adult beverages, unlimited activities and access to all on-site restaurants, cruises are not truly all-inclusive. At least not mainstream cruise lines.

If you seek a truly all-inclusive experience at sea, you'll want to consider sailing with a luxury cruise line. Your fare will typically include complimentary soft drinks, specialty coffees, most wines and spirits, Wi-Fi, crew gratuities and often specialty dining. Sometimes airfare, pre-cruise stays and shore excursions are included, as well.

For example, Regent Seven Seas Cruises — one of the most inclusive cruise lines — includes unlimited complimentary beverages, shore excursions in every port, prepaid gratuities, specialty dining in multiple onboard restaurants, unlimited Wi-Fi, laundry service, airfare from select gateways and airport transfers to the ship. Higher-category cabins also include a pre-cruise hotel stay and occasionally a two- or three-night land program.

Upscale ocean cruise lines, as well as river and expedition cruise lines, typically have more inclusive fares than mainstream lines but are not all-inclusive, with the exception of expedition cruises offered by luxury cruise lines.

What is included in cruise fares?

For the purposes of this story, we will focus on mainstream cruise lines and what's included in those lines' fares.

Accommodation

what does all inclusive cruise mean

While cabins vary in size and accouterments, you'll find that most ships offer — from least expensive to priciest — inside rooms, ocean views (with a window), cabins with private balconies and suites. Generally speaking, older mass-market ships have fewer balcony cabins and suites than newer megaships.

The least expensive fares are usually attached to inside or obstructed-view cabins. (Views can be obstructed by the ship's lifeboats or the ship's superstructure, for example.)

No matter which cruise line you pick, your cabin will include a comfortable bed (or beds), ensuite bathroom (usually with just a shower and no tub unless you book a higher-category cabin), closet and a desk/vanity. Cabins are serviced daily by room stewards.

Meals in the main dining room are included in your cruise fare. Additional venues, such as a buffet (open long hours each day) and pool grill, are also free. Many ships also have complimentary pizzerias (such as Royal Caribbean's Sorrento's) and cafe snacks (think Princess Cruises' International Cafe).

Other dining establishments, called specialty restaurants, charge either a per-person surcharge or have an a la carte menu on the big-ship lines.

When you want free ice cream on mainstream cruise ships, head to the buffet or pool deck, where you'll usually find a soft-serve ice cream machine. A few lines will offer scooped ice cream at the buffet for no charge, but ships with stand-alone ice cream or gelato parlors typically charge extra for those treats.

Room service

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Room service used to be free on most cruise ships, but cruise lines have been slowly adding charges over the years. On most cruise lines, you can still order continental breakfast for free, but all-day and late-night dining often costs extra. Suite guests might get room service fees waived as part of their upgraded perks.

Completely free room service is a rare bird these days, with Disney Cruise Line and Holland America being the mainstream cruise lines to offer it.

Some cruise lines offer complimentary room service to select non-suite fare classes. For example, guests can add the "Fantastica Experience" to their MSC Cruises booking for perks like breakfast in your cabin with free delivery. Sailing with Princess? You can opt for the Princess Plus or Princess Premier package and enjoy room service delivery at no charge.

Guests aboard Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean can take advantage of free continental breakfast during morning hours, but have to pay for in-cabin dining the rest of the day.

Expect to pay a service charge for all in-room dining on lines like Norwegian Cruise Line ($9.95) and Virgin Voyages ($5).

On most mass-market cruise lines, you'll get complimentary water (not bottled), non-specialty coffee and tea, and beverages like lemonade, iced tea and assorted juices. You'll usually have the most options at the buffet, where self-service drink machines are located. In the main dining room, you tend to have fewer juice options but can almost always get water, lemonade or iced tea.

Disney Cruise Line includes soda in its fares, but it's an outlier among the big-ship lines.

Most cruise lines include complimentary kids' programming in the cruise fare. This includes age-appropriate activities in exciting onboard settings with trained childcare professionals. Most programs are free, but you will likely pay for after-hours group babysitting.

Entertainment

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Complimentary entertainment varies from one cruise line to the next, but you'll typically get free admission to Broadway-style theater productions and comedy shows. Royal Caribbean's ice skating and acrobatic/high-dive shows are also free of charge. Live music can be found in many onboard venues, and listening is free — though you'll probably buy an alcoholic beverage or two since these bands usually play in the ship's lounges.

Outdoor movies are one of the coolest freebies on board. Princess Cruises was the first to offer "Movies Under the Stars," and it has become an incredibly popular pastime for cruisers. Most lines offer something similar now. Sometimes, the movies are old favorites, but other lines, like Disney, offer first-run movies during their voyages. Expect free cookies and milk or popcorn and even the distribution of blankets on chilly nights.

Trivia is another popular daytime entertainment option that's free, but you'll pay to play bingo — especially if there's a cash prize.

Cruise ships with art galleries often have free art auctions that often net you a complimentary glass of Champagne. But you'll need to dig into your wallet to buy a piece of art you see at the show.

Other events to look for in your daily cruise program include cooking demonstrations, game shows, lectures and craft classes. In the evenings, it's always free to dance the night away in the disco or try out your inner Taylor Swift at a karaoke session.

Also, look for cerebral pastimes like Discovery at Sea, a partnership between Discover and Princess Cruises, which offers fun activities for kids and adults inspired by shows like "Mythbusters" and "Investigation Discovery." The program includes a guest lecturer program and top-deck after-dark stargazing.

Finally, nearly every cruise line invites passengers to free parties. Study your daily cruise planner and attend events like the embarkation sail-away party or Norwegian Cruise Line's White Hot Party, where everyone is asked to dress in all white as DJs spin tunes to get everyone onto the dance floor.

Onboard activities and amenities

Many, but not all, of your cruise ship's onboard attractions and activities are included in your cruise fare. Guests can enjoy the ship's pools, hot tubs and lounge chairs for sunbathing for free, though certain adults-only or VIP pool areas might require paying for a day pass. Onboard water parks, waterslides and splash areas are also complimentary.

Your cruise fare also typically includes complimentary access to the cruise ship fitness center to use cardio and resistance machines and free weights. However, group and private classes will often charge a fee.

On most ships, onboard attractions like miniature golf, shuffleboard, rock climbing walls and sports courts are free to use, but a few lines are outliers.

What is not included in cruise fares?

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Specialty dining

Beyond the included-in-your-fare meals at the main dining room, buffet restaurant and pool grills, many mass-market cruise lines include a selection of "specialty" restaurants. These are book-ahead and pay-extra dining venues that sometimes offer a more upscale dining experience than what's complimentary.

Specialty restaurants typically include venues like high-end steakhouses, fancy chef's table experiences or an evening dedicated to the cuisine of a region like Italy, France or Southeast Asia.

You can often purchase specialty dining packages when you book your cruise. Pay for a certain number of meals at the ship's specialty restaurants upfront, and you'll receive a discount.

Don't want to spring for a specialty dining package? Most cruise lines allow you to book your reservation up to 48 hours prior to your sail date. If you missed that window, head to the restaurant as soon as you board, and you may still be able to snag a reservation.

Alcoholic and specialty beverages

If you plan to imbibe alcoholic beverages, you have two options. You can either pay per drink during your cruise (as you would at a typical restaurant or bar) or buy a drinks package upfront.

A drinks package can save you money if you think you'll drink more than a few beers or cocktails per day. However, you can't purchase one package for one person — it goes by cabin. If one person buys one, everyone 21 or older in that cabin must buy one, too.

Mainstream cruise lines also charge for nonalcoholic beverages, including soda, specialty coffees and teas, bottled waters, smoothies and milkshakes, freshly squeezed juices and bottled water. Many lines offer soft drinks packages that offer unlimited soda or coffee cards for discounts on cafe drinks.

Additional onboard activities

While cruise ships offer a bevy of complimentary attractions and activities, some ships feature onboard diversions that require an additional fee. These are often attractions that can accommodate a limited number of people at a time.

For example, Carnival's Bolt roller coaster costs $15 per person for two laps of the track. Some select Royal Caribbean ships feature the Royal Escape Room, which is $19.99 per person (and requires a reservation). A go-kart ride aboard select Norwegian ships will cost you $15 per ride. You might also pay for laser tag, VIP or adults-only sun decks, arcade games and virtual-reality rides and simulators.

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Massages, manicures, pedicures and other treatments cost extra — and prices can run the gamut, depending on the cruise line. If you want to splurge on a spa treatment, consider booking it during a port day, as cruise lines often offer discounts.

Other spa offerings, like access to the spa's thermal suite, some fitness classes and private fitness training, are also an additional cost.

Laundry services

Certain cruise lines offer onboard self-service laundry facilities, which include coin-operated machines, an ironing board and detergent and fabric softener available for purchase. You can also send your laundry away for professional washing, pressing and dry cleaning, which also carries a charge.

Most cruise lines charge a fee for room service now. For example, on Norwegian Cruise Line sailings, individual menu items on room service orders are complimentary. However, you'll pay a $9.95 service fee per order. You can order 24-hour room service during your Royal Caribbean cruise, but you'll pay a $7.95 service fee.

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Organized cruise ship excursions during your time in port will cost extra, generally starting from around $25, depending on the type of tour. For example, Carnival cruisers can book a St. Thomas Skyride to Paradise Point for $25 per person or splurge on a Taku Glacier Helicopter Landing and Airboat Adventure in Juneau, Alaska, for $700 per person.

You can also book your own excursion directly with tour operators.

Some ships might run a free shuttle from the port into the center of the town, but most of the time, you will get around port on your own dime.

Your base fare likely will not include tips to servers, cabin attendants and other staff. Most of the biggest cruise lines automatically add some type of service or gratuity fee onto passenger bills. Lines with such charges include Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC Cruises, Norwegian and Princess Cruises.

At most lines, you can pay your service charges in advance of sailing (when you pay your cruise fare). If you prefer to pay for tips once you're on board your cruise, the gratuities will automatically appear on your bill. If you wish to adjust the charges (up or down), you can visit the guest relations desk while on board.

You are always welcome to tip extra in cash to crew members who go above and beyond to make your vacation special.

Ways to make your cruise fare more inclusive

what does all inclusive cruise mean

All-inclusive packages

Many lines offer different types of all-inclusive packages you can purchase when you book your cruise. These packages are designed to provide a hassle-free cruise experience by allowing passengers to pay for one or more of their onboard expenses — such as beverages, Wi-Fi and gratuities — up front and possibly at a discount.

Nearly every cruise line that doesn't already include alcohol in its fares will sell you an all-inclusive drinks package that lets you have an open bar experience on board.

Some cruise lines have a basic fare class and a more inclusive fare class. For example, if you're sailing with Holland America, you can purchase the Have It All package, which includes premium amenities like the line's Signature beverage package, specialty dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credit for a set daily rate.

Princess Cruises offers the comprehensive Princess Premier package, which comes with unlimited Wi-Fi on up to four devices, a beverage package, specialty dining and free digital photos. Celebrity Cruises offers cruise-only rates, as well as All Included rates; the latter comes with a Classic drinks package and basic Wi-Fi.

Elite status

If you're an upper-tier member of a cruise line's loyalty program, you can take advantage of perks like cabin upgrades, free or discounted Wi-Fi, free laundry, complimentary drinks and priority boarding or disembarkation. Note that you'll have to sail with the same line many times before the best freebies and discounts kick in.

Book a suite

While you'll pay a lot more for a suite than for a standard cabin on a cruise ship, it might be worth it if you seek an inclusive and upscale cruise experience. On many mainstream megaships, suite guests have access to sprawling, private "ship-within-a-ship" luxury areas, as well as extra fare inclusions.

For example, guests in Royal Caribbean's suites enjoy a bevy of perks based on the Royal Suite Class tier their cabin falls under. Some suites include Wi-Fi, specialty dining or access to an exclusive restaurant, a beverage package or complimentary happy hours, and tips wrapped into the cruise fare.

Bottom line

Now that you understand what's included in standard cruise fares and how you can create a more "all-inclusive" cruise experience, you can better evaluate the price of your cruise before you book. Sometimes the more expensive rate actually provides better value because you get more amenities included.

Many cruise advertisements feature images of plentiful cocktails, tables heaped with food and all variety of entertainment and excursions. But does that mean that all cruises are all-inclusive? While food, some drinks, entertainment and lodging are part of the package — there are often more costs once you’re on board.

Some cruise lines specifically advertise themselves as all-inclusive, and you’ll likely encounter fewer add-on opportunities on these ships. On other cruises, however, expect to pay for anything above and beyond the basics.

So are cruise ships all-inclusive? Here’s a breakdown of what most cruises actually include in their base price and what you’ll likely need to pay for once on board.

What is included in a cruise?

As you look at the hospitality offerings provided by various cruise lines, you’ll likely notice they promise a lot — and in most cases, they deliver. However, it’s important to understand exactly what they’re offering to keep your expectations — and budget — in check.

Accommodations

Cruises include onboard accommodations in your chosen stateroom category, and the price will vary based on the type of cabin you choose. Options can range from an inside cabin without windows to a balcony cabin with ocean view to a large, multi-room suite. Each has its own price point with varying levels of benefits.

Food and beverages

Cruises promise tasty food and lots of it — this can come in the form of large dining rooms, buffets and snack stations by the pool. As part of the cruise price, there is always complimentary food of many types and flavors. Drinks included are tap water, some juices and iced tea on most lines; everything else typically costs extra. Coffee and tea are complimentary, but you’ll need to pay for specialty coffee beverages.

Entertainment

Live music, crew performances, Broadway-style shows and musical revues are generally free on cruises. Some cruises may charge extra for certain shows, but in most cases, entertainment is included in your ticket.

» Learn more: The best cruise lines

Many cruise lines have children’s clubs with supervised activities, and the use of these is often included in the overall cruise fare. In-room babysitting, however, will cost you extra.

Recreational amenities

Fitness centers, swimming pools, jogging tracks and sports facilities like a basketball court or putting green are usually free for all passengers to use. Sometimes cruise lines offer workout classes or health and wellness consultations for free, too.

Room service

Some cruise lines — but not all — include complimentary room service as a perk. Companies that offer free room service include Celebrity Cruises, Cunard, Holland America, Princess Cruises and Silversea, among others.

» Learn more: The guide to cruise insurance

What is not included in a cruise?

The fact is that cruise lines make money charging passengers for additional services onboard. Some may be worth paying extra for, depending on what kind of experience you want. Here are some of the items you’ll typically have to pay extra for during your cruise.

Specialty restaurants

While all cruises provide complimentary food, many also offer passengers the opportunity to dine at specialty restaurants. These can include steakhouses, Italian, Mexican and Mediterranean venues, hibachi grills and specialty ice cream shops. The cost of your food in these restaurants may not be included in your ticket — often you’ll have to pay extra.

Some beverages

Alcoholic drinks and sometimes even soft drinks are a big source of revenue for cruise lines. Many provide the option to purchase a beverage package, which is a chance to bundle together drinks at one set price. This makes sense if you plan on having many per day rather than paying one by one. Specialty coffee, tea or other drinks from onboard venues are also usually not part of the fare.

Casino and entertainment

While this is not much of a surprise, playing in the casino will cost you extra. Additionally, on ships with attractions like surf experiences or race tracks, some carry an extra cost while others are free. Arcades and simulator games also typically have an extra cost.

If you want to venture off-ship in an organized excursion, it will usually cost extra. Of course, you can always go it alone and explore without paying more, but you run the risk of missing the ship if you return late. (If you are on a ship’s shore excursion, the ship will wait for you before leaving.)

Some cruise lines do offer free excursions. These often include river cruise lines as well as Viking’s ocean cruises.

Most cruise lines do not include tips in the base fare — these are typically paid separately and go to servers, stateroom attendants and other onboard staff. Suggested tip amounts are usually provided by the cruise line. Some cruise lines, alternatively, incorporate gratuities in the price. These include Azamara, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Virgin Voyages.

Medical care

Passengers will have to pay extra if they need medical care while on the ship, although if they pay for travel or cruise insurance , any cost incurred may be reimbursable through that policy.

» Learn more: Is cruise travel insurance worth the cost?

While some cruise lines like Azamara do provide free access to laundry facilities as part of the fare, most do not include this in the rate. Self-service laundry may require a fee for detergent or to use the machine, and sending laundry away for professional cleaning also carries a charge.

Spa services

Relaxing in the spa with a massage or beauty treatment will cost you. Each cruise line has its own menu of services, and even the most all-inclusive cruise lines will typically require an additional payment.

Wireless internet

Staying connected with friends, loved ones or the office is a requirement for most people when traveling, and cruise lines know it. However, most provide it for an additional cost. A handful of cruise lines, like Silversea, Seabourn and Viking, do include complimentary Wi-Fi.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

What can cruise elite status get you?

Much like airlines and hotel companies, cruise lines have elite status programs where repeat customers are rewarded for their loyalty. Among the benefits that elite status can bring are cabin upgrades, free laundry, free or discounted Wi-Fi, complimentary drinks, concierge lounge access and priority boarding or disembarkation.

» Learn more: How to earn and redeem points on cruises

All-inclusive cruises aren’t the whole story

The variations between cruise lines are vast — some do offer robust packages while others unbundle costs for you to pay as you go. If you want a true all-inclusive cruise, luxury lines like Seabourn and Silversea are the way to go. But, even all-inclusive lines like these still charge extra for things like spa treatments and specialty excursions.

Some of the most important inclusions to consider are Wi-Fi, alcoholic drinks, room service and destination excursions. All of these are commonly included on the best all-inclusive lines, including many river cruises. Mainstream cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, tend to include less upfront and instead charge you as you go.

If you have elite status with a cruise line or hold one of its co-branded credit cards , you may be able to avoid having to fork over additional fees. Otherwise, you can choose one of the cruise lines that are truly all-inclusive to avoid any extra surprises on the high seas.

Understanding Cruise Ship Door Codes

As you stroll down the long corridor of the cruise ship, you can’t help but wonder about the mysterious secret codes that adorn each door. These codes are not just random numbers and letters; they are actually part of the cruise ship door code technology.

This technology is designed to enhance the safety and security of passengers on board. By using unique codes for each door, cruise ship staff can easily identify which doors have been accessed and by whom. This allows for quick response in case of emergencies and ensures that only authorized personnel can enter certain areas.

The benefits of door codes for passengers are immense. Not only do they provide peace of mind, but they also eliminate the need for physical keys, making it easier to navigate the ship and reducing the risk of lost or stolen keys.

Now, let’s explore the mystery further and decode what these codes actually mean.

Decoding the Mystery: What Do the Codes Mean?

Unlocking the enigmatic symbols adorning the entryways, passengers are left in awe as they decipher the hidden language of the maritime realm. The history of cruise ship door codes is a fascinating journey that traces back to the early days of seafaring.

Originally used for security purposes, these codes have evolved over time to incorporate a variety of meanings and functions. From indicating staff access levels to alerting crew members about emergencies, the codes serve as a vital communication tool on board. As technology advanced, the codes also became more complex, incorporating electronic keycards and biometric systems. Today, the evolution of cruise ship door codes continues, with newer ships utilizing advanced technologies such as facial recognition.

These codes not only enhance security but also streamline guest experiences. Now, let’s explore the significance of room numbers and how they contribute to the overall cruising experience.

The Significance of Room Numbers

Step into your floating sanctuary and discover the magic behind the unique room numbers that transport you to a world of comfort and luxury. The significance of room numbers on a cruise ship goes beyond just identifying your temporary abode. It is a secret language that provides valuable information and can enhance your overall experience.

Here are a few tips for using door codes to unlock the hidden treasures of your cruise ship:

Look for odd or even numbers: Odd numbers are usually located on the port side of the ship, while even numbers are found on the starboard side.

Pay attention to deck numbers: Higher deck numbers often mean better views and easier access to amenities.

Familiarize yourself with the location of your room: Knowing the general area of your room can save you time and energy when navigating the ship.

Take note of any letters or symbols: These can indicate special room categories or features.

Understanding the significance of room numbers and utilizing door codes can make your cruise experience even more enjoyable. Now, let’s delve into identifying different types of codes.

Identifying Different Types of Codes

Don’t bother trying to crack the riddle of the mysterious symbols and letters adorning your room number – they won’t reveal any hidden meanings or special features. The truth is that the codes on cruise ship doors are simply a form of door code technology used for identification purposes.

These codes help staff members locate specific rooms quickly and efficiently. While the specific codes may vary depending on the cruise ship, there are some common cruise ship door codes that you may come across. For example, the letters A, B, C, and D often represent different sections or decks of the ship, while the numbers indicate the specific room or cabin.

These codes are not meant to be secret or mysterious; they are simply practical tools for organization and navigation. Now, let’s explore the safety and security measures in place onboard.

Safety and Security Measures

Ensuring the safety and security of passengers and crew members is of utmost importance on board any cruise vessel. To achieve this, cruise ships utilize door code technology as part of their safety and security measures. These door code systems provide numerous benefits, enhancing the overall safety of the ship.

One major advantage of door code technology is the ability to restrict access to certain areas of the ship. By assigning unique codes to different groups of individuals, such as passengers, crew members, and staff, unauthorized entry into restricted areas is prevented. This helps to maintain the privacy and safety of both passengers and crew members.

In addition, door code systems allow for quick and efficient access to cabins and other authorized areas. Passengers and crew members can easily enter their designated areas without the need for physical keys, reducing the risk of lost or stolen keys.

With door code technology in place, cruise ships can ensure the safety and security of everyone on board. This is just one aspect of the comprehensive safety measures implemented to protect passengers and crew members. In the next section, we will explore access levels and restricted areas, further highlighting the importance of these security measures.

Access Levels and Restricted Areas

Maintaining different access levels and restricted areas on board ensures the privacy and safety of passengers and crew members, a crucial consideration when it comes to the security of any vessel.

Access control is a vital aspect of cruise ship operations. Various levels of access are granted to different individuals based on their roles and responsibilities. For example, passengers typically have access to common areas and their assigned cabins, while crew members have additional access to work areas and crew-only spaces.

Restricted access is implemented in areas such as engine rooms, control centers, and storage areas. Only authorized personnel are allowed in these areas. These measures help prevent unauthorized individuals from entering sensitive areas and ensure that only those with the necessary training and clearance can access them.

Moving on to crew codes and identification, these play a significant role in maintaining security onboard and will be discussed in the following section.

Crew Codes and Identification

To ensure the utmost security and privacy, you must adhere to the strict protocols regarding crew identification and access codes.

On a cruise ship, crew members are assigned different access levels based on their job responsibilities. This ensures that only authorized personnel can enter restricted areas. Crew members receive specific identification cards that grant them access to different parts of the ship. These cards contain embedded codes that correspond to their access level. They are required to present their ID cards whenever they enter restricted areas, allowing security personnel to monitor and control access.

Crew codes and identification play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and smooth operation of the ship. By strictly adhering to these protocols, the cruise ship can ensure that only authorized personnel have access to sensitive areas.

Moving on to emergency procedures and evacuation routes, it is important to understand the necessary steps to follow during critical situations.

Emergency Procedures and Evacuation Routes

Now that we’ve discussed crew codes and identification, let’s move on to a crucial aspect of cruise ship safety: emergency procedures and evacuation routes.

As a seasoned cruiser, I understand the importance of thorough evacuation route planning and regular emergency drills and trainings. Cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art systems to ensure the safety of passengers in case of an emergency. These procedures include designated assembly stations and evacuation routes that are clearly marked throughout the ship.

Crew members are trained to assist passengers and guide them to safety during an evacuation. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout and evacuation routes, as this knowledge can be invaluable in case of an emergency.

Now, let’s delve into the next section where I’ll provide you with tips for navigating the ship using door codes.

All-Inclusive Cruises: Comprehensive Guide

Posted on Last updated: March 12, 2024

The great thing about all-inclusive cruises is that most of these things are, in fact, all inclusive! What does all-inclusive cruising mean, exactly?

In this article I am going to go in-depth into what is included in all-inclusive cruising, down to the last area of what could be included depending on your specific cruise line.

all-inclusive cruises

What are All-Inclusive Cruises? Included vs. Not Included

All-inclusive cruises truly bring the ideas of luxury and comfort to the next level.

During the optimal all-inclusive cruises, you will typically receive a spacious stateroom, unlimited food, countless amounts of entertainment, activity venues, unlimited drinks, Wi-Fi, and daily gratuities– all included within your original cruise fare.

You may have many questions about cruising , specifically about all-inclusive cruising, but the concept is as simple as it sounds.

While this definitely varies depending on the cruise line you are cruising with, most cruise lines include the vast majority of activities, venues, and food in the upfront cruise fare.

all-inclusive cruising food

What’s included:

Any all-inclusive cruise you may book should include the majority of their on-ship restaurants in your all-inclusive cruise fare.

This means that the pool side bar , cruise buffet , and more formal options like the formal dining rooms are all included!

Not only can you dine out however many times you want to on your all-inclusive cruising adventure, but you can order practically anything you see or want at sea .

This means that if you want 4 appetizers, no entrée, and 3 desserts, that’s exactly what you will get!

Plus, your friendly server will be more than happy to bring you anything you need, want, or are craving (even if it is not at the restaurant you are currently at!).

Japanese cruise food

Also, you can order what you want in whatever order you’d like. If you are craving chocolate when you arrive back from port, no one is going to stop you from ordering the delicious mousse chocolate cake as your appetizer!

This also means you can order some warm mozzarella sticks after you thought you finished your meal if you find yourself still craving the delicious cruise food.

Snacks are also included in your all-inclusive cruise fare (thankfully!), which means if you see any snack station or want to head over to the ship’s buffet for a quick bite, go for it. I guarantee that no one is going to stop you!

You can also order unlimited food from room service during all-inclusive cruises (I know, amazing right!). Just remember that it is customary to tip the crew member who delivers your food to your stateroom once they arrive.

Victoria BC food

What’s not Included:

While the majority of food you stumble upon on your all-inclusive cruises will be included in your fare, there are a couple exceptions depending on your cruise line.

Most cruise lines have specialty dining facilities in addition to their main dining options. These are typically fancier dining venues that offer 3, 4, or 5-course meals to passengers willing to fork over extra money to truly foster the all-inclusive cruising environment.

Most specialty dining options on all-inclusive cruises are offered at a 20$ or higher surcharge, which will grant you access to the onboard restaurant’s complete menu. Other specialty dining spots may boast an all-a-cart experience where you can pick and choose which appetizers, entrees, and desserts you will be paying out of pocket for.

To make these cruise specialty dining spots more accessible for guests, cruise lines offer specialty dining packages for guests to pre-pay for a certain amount of reservations at the onboard specialty dining venues.

Other onboard food that typically won’t be included in your fare will be outlined by your cruise line. These foods can vary greatly, whether the Mickey bars on Disney cruises or the fancy pastries offered at the cafes on Royal Caribbean cruises.

all-inclusive cruising drinks

Most, if not all, cruise lines offer water, coffee, tea, and juice at no extra cost when booking your all-inclusive cruises. Just make sure to bring a reusable water bottle or container to carry your drinks as any bottled beverage will usually come with an extra fee.

You can then easily bring your water bottle up to any cruise ship bar and ask the bartender to refill your container with water to carry around onboard.

You may also be surprised when you initially arrive to your cruise stateroom with a bottle of champagne or wine.

Many cruise lines, like Norwegian Cruise Line , will treat their past guests or those staying in suites with these complimentary bottles of alcohol for guests to start off their cruise vacation right! Just make sure to double check with your room steward to confirm that these bottles come free of charge.

sunset drinks Royal Caribbean

Now, where it gets pretty complicated is the packages or promotions going on either by your cruise line or travel agency at the time of booking.

Nearly all cruise lines offer cruise alcoholic beverage packages either as a promotion or at an extra cost. Some cruise lines, like Norwegian Cruise Line, will frequently offer this as a perk when you are booking your cruise.

You will have to watch out for extra hidden fees like taxes and gratuities when opting into these packages, however, they are more than likely worth it!

Other cruise lines and cruise travel agencies will offer non-alcoholic beverage packages that include bottled water, soda, and non-alcoholic cocktails as another package (this may also be included with your all-inclusive cruise fare, you will have to check!).

Most cruises in the North American cruise market do not typically include either the alcoholic or nonalcoholic drink package in the fare, but European cruises frequently do.

Café Select Coffee Card

What’s not included:

Specialty coffees on most cruise lines are not included in the all-inclusive cruising fare. Most all-inclusive cruises will include American coffees in your fare, which you can typically find at the buffet, order at the dining facilities, request from room service, or even find within your cruise stateroom.

Like I stated earlier, more than likely, alcoholic beverages are not included. This means you should definitely check out your cruise line’s all-inclusive drink packages before you sail the high seas!

If you are already imagining yourself sipping on margaritas as you sail away and enjoying wine at dinner, these all-inclusive cruise drink packages can save you from massive headaches and a lot of money.

Anyone who has stayed in a hotel before can attest to the mini-fridge filled with tempting alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Well, cruise lines have also picked up on this strategic method and have filled each stateroom’s fridge with plenty of cold beverages to tempt their guests.

Do not touch these ! I can almost guarantee that these tempting beverages are not free, and are more than likely extremely expensive for what you ultimately get. Instead, either opt in for the all-inclusive cruising drink packages or stick to drinking while you are in port.

all-inclusive cruise venue

Once you fork over the money for your cruise, you are granted access to nearly every passenger area onboard.

This includes (on most cruise ships) the refreshing, top deck pools ! These pools are open from dusk until far past dawn for eager cruisers looking for relaxation to enjoy.

Other facilities onboard you will have access to include any libraries , the atrium , lounges , theaters , restaurants , the buffet , and any other exciting features of your cruise ship.

While it is completely free to access these areas, there may be extra charges when it comes to experiencing all the perks of the venues. This could include bingo, arcade, casino, and other costs that add up quickly.

If you would like to stay in shape during your all-inclusive cruises, you are in luck! Most cruise lines boast amazing gyms that are open most hours of the day, free of charge.

If you are cruising with toddlers , you are also in luck! All childcare facilities are also included in your all-inclusive cruise fare, with all youth programs and child care for ages 2 and up being completely complimentary.

While there are plenty of venues onboard cruise ships for you to spend your entire vacation entertained, there are specific areas on some cruise ships that are off limits or come at an extra charge.

The off limit areas for guests during all-inclusive cruises obviously include the crew area . This means you should not wander past the “crew access only” doors, sneak behind the scenes during shows and meals, and seek out the ship navigation section of the ship.

Besides that, while you won’t have access to public areas while they are not open (duh!), most other areas onboard can be explored either for free or with an extra fee.

Some areas that may charge a fee include some private classes onboard, special childcare , the spa , and any exclusive club areas .

If you would like to leave your kids to enjoy a romantic dinner with your loved one, of course that is included! However, if you are looking for an extensive babysitting service for care during your all-inclusive cruise, there will be an extra cost.

The cruise ship spas are typically offered to all-inclusive cruising passengers via a spa pass (check out Norwegian Cruise Line’s Thermal Suite Pass ), or by paid treatment only. This means you will only have access to this relaxing area if you have a spa package included in your fair or if you pay extra after you book your cruise.

There may also be areas of the ship that are reserved for your cruise line’s loyalty members or suite guests. Obviously, these areas are only accessible to those who are eligible, and are there for not included in an all-inclusive cruise fare.

all-inclusive cruising gratuities

Now, the gratuities all-inclusive cruises area can be tricky to navigate.

Most all-inclusive cruises leaving from the United States will NOT cover gratuities, unless explicitly stated when booking your cruise.

Now, that doesn’t mean you should worry, but I highly suggest double checking what your cruise line policy is when it comes to gratuities and tips.

Most cruise lines will either offer the option to pre-pay your cruise gratuities or charge a flat rate (around $15 a day) at the end of your cruise that covers your stateroom steward, waiters, and other interactions with staff onboard.

Of course, you can always adjust this after your vacation to whatever you believe is fair, but just remember, cruise line employees often make very little and depend on these tips for the majority of their income.

You will also have to pay extra gratuities (usually a nominal fee) for any room service you order onboard.

There are extra gratuities added to many of the cruise packages you may add to your cruise, whether as a seemingly “free” perk or at an extra cost. This includes gratuities added for any drink packages, specialty dining packages, and other packages you purchase depending on your specific cruise line for your all-inclusive cruising adventure.

all-inclusive cruising entertainment

Entertainment

Most entertainment should be included in your all-inclusive cruises when you book your cruising adventure. This means that any Broadway-caliber shows , karaoke sessions , live bands , and other entertainment will be free of charge.

Now, even though the onboard cruise entertainment may be complimentary when booking your all-inclusive cruise, that does not mean that you will immediately have access to all entertainment.

Many cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, actually require passengers to plan out their cruise and book tickets to their shows to avoid overcrowding. Therefore, you should double check with your cruise line to see what is required when it comes to having access to the onboard entertainment.

Art auctions and other classes can also be free and sometimes offer free refreshments, so make sure to check with your all-inclusive cruise line to check out their cruise deals!

Other areas of entertainment can be found throughout most of the all-inclusive cruises.

While many classes onboard outlined in your daily itinerary guide may be free, I can almost guarantee that there will be a couple that are not. These could be fitness classes , cooking classes , or other ones ones that are more intensive or require expensive resources.

There may also be fees to use all the forms of personal entertainment onboard all-inclusive cruises. For example, there is an extra fee to play bingo on Norwegian Cruise Line. Another example is that you will have to pay extra for the ice bar on NCL’s other ships.

all inclusive cruise perks

Other Perks

While most cruise lines do indeed offer WiFi on their all-inclusive cruises, most access will come at an extra cost.

If you book your cruise during your cruise line’s or travel agency’s promotional period , you may be granted a WiFi package, free of charge.

Otherwise, you are, unfortunately, out of luck and will need to fork over extra money to cover internet at sea. WiFi tends to be fairly expensive on cruise ships, and the speed is not always the greatest, so I recommend only purchasing if you absolutely need it.

Plus, this way, you can truly relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life on your all-inclusive cruises.

Again, unless you purchase or receive a photos package, the professional photos taken onboard will not be included in your all-inclusive cruise fare.

However, most of the friendly crew onboard will be more than happy to snap a picture of you and your travel companions with your phone or camera at no extra cost.

The photos taken when boarding the ship (most all-inclusive cruises have a fun backdrop), during formal nights, and any other time where a professional photographer is taking pictures will be free to take part in.

You will typically be able to browse all the photos taken for free as well, usually in an area around the cruise ship’s shops.

The extra fee comes into play when you try to obtain the photos afterwards. Unless you purchased or were granted a photo package before your all-inclusive cruise, you will be charged for any professional photos that you are looking to collect.

Flights are more than likely not included in your all-inclusive cruise fare.

Of course, there are some exceptions, like when cruise lines or travel agencies are running promotions, but a general rule is that flights are not included when booking all-inclusive cruises.

Daily Activities

Anything listed on your all-inclusive cruises daily itinerary (Freestyle Daily for NCL, Cruise Compass for Royal Caribbean, etc.) is more than likely included in your all-inclusive cruise fare.

This usually includes any physical, educational, entertainment, and family activities onboard.

Of course, there may be a couple events listed on the daily list of cruise activities that are offered at an extra charge (bingo, wine tastings, etc), but these will often be denoted with a note clearly labeling whether it is complimentary or costs extra.

SHORE EXCURSIONS

While some of the more expensive and luxurious cruise lines may include shore excursions on their all-inclusive cruises, most main stream cruise lines will not.

This again depends on any all-inclusive cruise packages you may have received or opted-in for while booking your cruise with your travel agent or the cruise line, but most of the time, you will have to plan and pay for your trips in port separately.

Onboard Credits

In rare, and I mean very rare, situations, you may have an onboard credit included on your all-inclusive cruises.

This is typically offered to past guests on specific cruise lines or as another add-on package when booking your all-inclusive cruising experience.

Again, cruise lines and travel agencies may also run promotions where they will offer an onboard cruise credit (depending on the type of stateroom you are in) when booking your all-inclusive cruises.

NCL things onboard

Common “Gotchas”

All-inclusive cruises offer a tantalizing promise of a hassle-free vacation, where everything is covered in one upfront cost. However, while many aspects of your holiday are typically covered, there are potential “gotchas” that can catch travelers off guard. Here are some common pitfalls and unexpected costs that you might encounter:

1. Not Everything is “All-Inclusive”

Despite the term, not all services and amenities are covered. Specialty dining venues, certain beverages (like premium liquors or wines), spa treatments, and private fitness classes might come with additional fees.

2. Shore Excursions

While your cruise might make stops at exotic ports, the shore excursions (like guided tours, activities, or experiences) often aren’t included in the all-inclusive rate and can be quite pricey.

3. Gratuities

Some cruise lines automatically add a daily gratuity to your account, which goes toward the crew’s service. While some all-inclusive packages cover this, others don’t, so you might end up with an unexpected bill at the end of your trip.

4. Wi-Fi and Connectivity

Many cruise lines charge for internet connectivity, and the prices can be steep. Even if a package provides “free Wi-Fi,” it might have data limitations or slow speeds, prompting you to upgrade for an additional fee.

5. Photography

Onboard photographers might snap your picture during the trip, especially during formal nights or when disembarking at ports. Purchasing these photos can be expensive.

6. Specialty Beverages

Your all-inclusive package might come with free beverages, but this often covers just basic drinks. Premium liquors, specialty cocktails, and certain bottled waters can cost extra.

7. Onboard Shops & Services

While shopping might be duty-free, it’s not free. Likewise, services like laundry or medical services will likely have added costs.

8. Babysitting and Kids’ Activities

While many cruises offer free kids’ clubs during the day, evening babysitting or certain specialized children’s programs might come with a fee.

9. Travel to the Departure Port

Unless specified, your cruise fare typically doesn’t include transportation to the port of departure. This means you’ll need to account for flight, hotel, and any other travel costs.

10. Cancellation and Change Fees

If your plans change, altering or canceling your cruise can come with hefty fees, depending on how close it is to the departure date.

11. Spa and Beauty Treatments

Most all-inclusive cruises do not include spa treatments like massages, facials, or hair and nail services. If they offer a spa credit, it’s often minimal and can only cover a small fraction of the cost.

Packing for an All-Inclusive Cruise vs. a Regular Cruise

Whether you opt for an all-inclusive cruise or a regular cruise, there’s no doubt that you’re in for a memorable journey. But when it comes to packing, these two types of cruises have some distinct differences. In this section, we’ll break down what you need to bring for each to ensure smooth sailing.

All-Inclusive Cruises: What to Pack

1. Important Documentation : This includes passports, tickets, boarding passes, and any pre-booked excursion information. With all-inclusive packages, you often get a broader range of included shore excursions, so keep those details handy.

2. Evening Wear : Many all-inclusive cruise lines have a luxury element. This often translates to more formal nights, so bring suitable attire like cocktail dresses, formal wear, and smart shoes.

3. Standard Vacation Essentials : Sunscreen, swimsuits, casual wear, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes for excursions.

4. Specialty Items : All-inclusive cruises may offer unique amenities, such as spa services, specialty restaurants, or themed nights. Bring any specific attire or items you might need for these.

5. Personal Medications and Toiletries : While many toiletries might be provided, always pack any personal or specialized items.

6. Minimal Cash : Since most things are covered, you’ll primarily need cash for tips (unless they’re included) and personal shopping on excursions.

cruise packing tips

Regular Cruises: What to Pack

1. Important Documentation : As with all-inclusive cruises, always bring your passport, boarding pass, tickets, and any pre-purchased excursion details.

2. Onboard Spending Money : Unlike all-inclusive cruises, regular cruises have many additional costs, including specialty dining, certain drinks, and some onboard activities. Bring a credit card or allocate a budget for onboard spending.

3. Dining Options Attire : Regular cruises usually have a mix of casual dining options and formal nights. Pack accordingly.

4. Drinks and Snacks : If the cruise line allows, you might want to bring some of your own drinks (like a bottle of wine) or snacks, especially if you have specific preferences or dietary restrictions.

5. Standard Vacation Essentials : Just as with all-inclusive cruises, don’t forget your sunscreen, casual clothes, swimsuits, and excursion gear.

6. Personal Medications and Toiletries : While some toiletries might be provided, specialized items are best brought from home.

7. Pre-purchased Beverage or Dining Packages : If you’ve purchased any specialty dining or beverage packages, bring the relevant documentation or vouchers.

Common Essentials for Both Cruise Types

Regardless of the cruise type, certain items are universally essential:

  • Travel insurance details.
  • Adaptors and chargers.
  • Entertainment for downtime, such as books, tablets, or e-readers.
  • A day bag for excursions.
  • First aid basics like pain relievers, motion sickness pills, and band-aids.

NCL tips

Money Saving Tricks While Onboard

Cruises can offer a luxurious escape, but if you’re not careful, onboard spending can quickly add up. Here are some tried-and-true strategies to help you save money while onboard a cruise ship:

1. Set a Budget

Before embarking, determine how much you’re willing to spend on extras. This will help you stay within your means and make you think twice about impulsive purchases.

2. Skip the Soda

Most cruise lines charge for soda. Instead of purchasing a soda package, stick to water, tea, coffee, or other complimentary beverages. If you really enjoy soda, consider bringing a limited quantity onboard if the cruise line’s policy allows it.

3. Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic drinks can be expensive. If you do plan to drink, consider buying a drink package if you think you’ll get your money’s worth. Alternatively, some cruise lines allow you to bring a bottle of wine or champagne onboard.

4. Avoid Specialty Dining

While specialty restaurants can offer a unique dining experience, the main dining room and buffet offer plenty of delicious options at no extra cost.

5. Make Use of Free Entertainment

Cruise ships are known for their entertainment. From shows and live music to trivia and dance classes, there’s usually no shortage of complimentary activities. Opt for these rather than paid attractions.

6. Limit Spa Treatments

Spa treatments onboard can be pricier than on land. If you really want a spa experience, look for specials during port days when the ship is emptier and prices might be reduced.

7. Be Wary of Onboard Shopping

Sales and promotions in onboard shops can be tempting, but remember, you might find better deals on similar items ashore or at home. Also, remember that “duty-free” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best deal.

8. Limit Wi-Fi Usage

Internet packages onboard can be expensive. If you don’t need to be connected constantly, take a digital detox, or connect when in port where you might find free Wi-Fi spots.

9. Pre-Book Excursions Independently

While booking through the cruise line can offer convenience, it’s often more affordable to book directly with tour operators or plan independent activities.

10. Attend Onboard Seminars

Some cruise ships offer informational seminars about the ports you’ll be visiting. Attend these to get ideas for free or affordable activities when you disembark.

11. Decline Professional Photos

Professional photographers are often on hand to snap photos during the cruise, especially during formal nights. While it’s fine to let them take your photo, you’re under no obligation to purchase the prints.

12. Use Onboard Credit Wisely

If you received onboard credit as part of your cruise package, use it for things you’d genuinely enjoy rather than splurging on random items.

13. Monitor Your Spending

Check your onboard account regularly at the ship’s kiosks or through its app. This will help you keep track of your spending and adjust as necessary.

All-Inclusive Cruise Deals

Vacations to go.

By far my favorite site for comparing the best all-inclusive cruise deals is Vacations to Go .

This is the simplest way to compare all the destinations, durations, time frames, and cruise lines of the top all-inclusive cruises throughout the industry.

Even if you would prefer to book through your travel agent or directly with the cruise line, Vacations to Go offers a helpful tool to compare all the all-inclusive cruises offered within your specified criteria, boasting the lowest prices offered across the internet.

all-inclusive cruise deals

Booking Through Travel Agents

I truly believe that the best way to save money on cruises is to book an all-inclusive cruise through the best travel agency!

While at first, it may seem backwards to work through some “middle man” to book your cruise, you can honestly save hundreds of dollars AND receive bonus perks for booking through cruise travel agents.

Cruise travel agents work directly with the cruise lines to provide their customers with the best all-inclusive cruises possible.

Most will receive blocks of staterooms on each sailing dedicated specifically for their eager customers to book. Thus, if you are bummed that your dream cruise stateroom is booked out, head on over to one of the dozen cruise travel agencies, and I can almost guarantee that they will have something you would like.

all-inclusive cruise deals

Booking Through Cruise Lines

If you would prefer to go the traditional route, booking your all-inclusive cruise directly through your cruise line is always another possibility.

I highly recommend not to book your all-inclusive cruises the first time you see your dream cruise, but instead, spend a few weeks to months monitoring the price and cruise package deals to make sure you get the most bang-for-your-buck.

If you are able to book a last-minute cruise,  you may be able to find one of the cheapest all-inclusive cruises offered on the market. Cruise lines and travel agencies desperately want to fill every stateroom onboard the cruise ships, and if they notice some empty staterooms weeks before sailing, they will significantly drop the price to maximize their profits.

Additionally, you may see many deals for all-inclusive cruises around national holidays as cruise lines tend to run huge promotions where they drop their prices and tie in cruise packages that will definitely make your all-inclusive cruise 100x better.

Some luxury all-inclusive cruise packages might offer airfare as part of the package or at a discounted rate. However, in many cases, cruisers need to arrange their own transportation to the departure port.

9. Are kids’ clubs or babysitting services included?

Many cruise lines offer complimentary kids’ clubs, but babysitting services, if available, might come at an additional fee.

10. Is Wi-Fi included in my fare?

Wi-Fi policies vary widely among cruise lines. Some luxury lines include complimentary internet, while others charge daily or by data usage.

Interesting to know that even on all-inclusive cruises some things aren’t actually included!

I’ve never been on a cruise, and definitely not an all inclusive cruise, but I like how easy it seems that it obviously covers most of what you would want. I think I need to try a shorter cruise to start and see how I like it

What Does All-Inclusive Mean?

The benefits of taking an all-inclusive luxury cruise never fail to amaze travelers. While the initial fare may seem higher than standard cruises, when you factor in every trip-related expense and it’s all said and done, most all-inclusive prices are actually a better vacation value than “cruise only fares” that nickel-and-dime you for every soda, service or specialty restaurant onboard.

If you want it all with no out-of-pocket expenses or don’t want a big final bill at the end of your journey, than an all-inclusive cruise may be right for you. But what does the term ‘all-inclusive’ really mean, what does it actually get you and which cruise lines do ‘all-inclusive’ best?

We have the answers below and access to the best all-inclusive cruise deals available anywhere.

All-Inclusive Redefined

Every cruise fare includes the same three things—your accommodations, standard meals and basic entertainment—so what does ‘all-inclusive’ actually include? The truth is, it depends. Every cruise line defines ‘all-inclusive’ slightly differently, and certain ships, sailings and stateroom options may add even more.

In general, here are the possible perks you’ll get when choosing an all-inclusive luxury cruise:

  • Meals—general dining plus room service and specialty restaurants
  • Drinks—sodas, beer, wine & spirits and in-room mini-bar
  • Gratuities—tips and most additional fees
  • Amenities—Wi-Fi, enrichment classes, entertainment, butler service, laundry & dry-cleaning
  • Extras—shore excursions, onboard services, airport transfers, pre or post-cruise hotel and even flights

Insider Tip: While spa services aren’t usually part of ‘all-inclusive’ prices, ship spas often offer discounts for first-day and port-day treatments. Stop by the spa, or check your daily newsletters to find out about day-of deals that won’t break the bank.

The most all-inclusive of all.

Beyond just including accommodations and alcohol, these distinctive cruise lines are constantly finding new ways to impress and new things to add to their already impressive ‘all-inclusive’ benefits.

We’ve selected our favorite all-inclusive cruise options below—ocean, yacht and river voyages—so you know who offers what and are guaranteed to get the most bang for your buck.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The most all-inclusive of the luxury cruise lines is Regent. They call it “cruising as it was meant to be”, but on Regent you really can have it all.

Insider Tip: AzAmazing evenings are unique to this cruise line - private, complimentary evening events ashore on each voyage - that capture the local customs in style and are included in the cruise fare.

Cruise vs. all-inclusive resort: which one is right for you.

Find out the pros and cons of each and see which option is right for you.

Cruise vs. All-Inclusive Resort

Cruise vs. All-Inclusive Resort: Which Is Better?

Picking your dream vacation can be tricky. Use our tips to help you plan.

If you're trying to decide whether you should book a cruise or stay at an all-inclusive resort for your next vacation, there are a lot of factors to consider. Beyond selecting a destination, you'll need to determine what type of experience you're looking for and what's included in the price of each option. After all, there's nothing worse than having a stress-free trip turn into a sticker shock surprise when you review the final bill.

To help, U.S. News compiled a list of questions to consider when comparing cruise versus all-inclusive resort vacations, along with suggested options for both.

What are your travel goals?

When deciding between an all-inclusive resort or a cruise, ask yourself the following questions:

Do I want to explore multiple destinations in one trip?

If your answer is yes, book a cruise . Cruises are a great option when you want to visit several locales in one trip, but aren't concerned with spending a lot of time in any one place. They're also perfect for getting an overview of a region, such as the Caribbean or the Mediterranean . If you want to visit off-the-beaten-path destinations instead of busier, more popular ports, consider itineraries offered by cruise lines with smaller ships that can navigate tighter waterways than larger ocean liners. For example, Windstar Cruises' small ships can visit small Greek islands ; remote Tahitian villages; Alaska's wildlife-filled Inian Islands; and sail the only navigable river in Spain, the Guadalquivir River.

Do I want to stay relax in one place?

If a relaxing land-based experience sounds more your speed, an all-inclusive resort may be a better option. You can spend your time taking advantage of luxurious resort amenities and exploring the surrounding areas. The Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico , offers family-friendly accommodations and activities, as well as romantic oceanfront suites with plunge pools and spa bathrooms for couples. The resort also has an impressive selection of internationally inspired restaurants and indoor and outdoor bars. During the day, sign up for holistic treatments at the SE Spa by Grand Velas (for an additional fee) or enjoy complimentary water activities like kayaking and snorkeling. You can even explore ancient ruins in nearby Tulum, Mexico , on an off-property excursion.

Still, for some cruisers, the ship itself is the destination. The details of the itinerary don't matter much to them, as they plan to spend most of their time relaxing on board. Big cruise ships and/or new vessels offer seemingly endless dining and entertainment options.

What kind of atmosphere do I want?

If the shrill screams of children playing might bother you, you can easily opt for an adults-only cruise or adults-only all-inclusive resort . Of course, if you're traveling with kids, there's no shortage of kid-friendly cruise ships and all-inclusive family resorts in the Caribbean , Mexico and U.S.

What's included in the price?

Another huge variable is the price you'll pay for a cruise versus all-inclusive resort – and what exactly is covered.

Cruises: Taking a cruise can be a great value , but it's important to note that inexpensive base fares aboard large, mainstream cruise lines can often be misleading. Once you add in additional costs for taxes, fees and port charges; gratuities; stateroom upgrades; specialty dining and beverage packages; excursions; and Wi-Fi access, the total price of your voyage may end up much higher than you expected.

To avoid surprise extra fees throughout your trip, you might want to consider sailing with a luxury line like Viking Ocean Cruises . Although such cruises typically come at a higher price point, the line's fares cover all meals (including specialty dining venues), beer and wine with lunch and dinner, nonalcoholic beverages and bottled water, one shore excursion in each port, onboard Wi-Fi access and more. Also consider cruise deals, which often include last-minute incentives and kids-cruise-free promos .

Book a cruise on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

All-Inclusive Resorts: When it comes to all-inclusive resorts, be sure to research what's included in the nightly rate before you book. Couples-only Sandals Resorts International in the Caribbean offers some of the most inclusive resort pricing setups, with rates covering accommodations, gourmet dining at up to 16 restaurants, snacks, premium wines and liquors, stocked in-room bars, water sports, complimentary golf course greens fees (select resorts), PADI-certified scuba diving (at most properties), entertainment, Wi-Fi access, gratuities and airport transfers. Extra fees apply for spa treatments, local excursions and personalized events, like private dinners on the beach. Other resort brands may not offer such an extensive list of included perks, so be sure to check with the specific property you are interested in. And again – look for available offers when booking. Many all-inclusive resorts offer kids-stay-free promos on a regular basis.

Do you want to drive or fly to your vacation destination?

Cruise vs. All-Inclusive Resort: Which Is Better?

Courtesy of Sandals Resorts

Before you find yourself sipping umbrella drinks with a good book in hand, you'll have to put in the work of traveling to your destination. It goes without saying that visiting an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean will require an international flight, but you may also need to hop on a plane to reach your chosen cruise ship terminal. Still, many ships sail from popular ports in Florida cities – including Fort Lauderdale , Miami , Tampa and Cape Canaveral (Orlando) – and travelers outside of the Sunshine State can find sailings out of ports in California, Texas, New York and Louisiana. Depending on where you live, you may be able to save yourself a flight (and some money) by driving directly to your embarkation port.

You may also be able to book a stay at an all-inclusive resort (or a property with an all-inclusive option) without traveling too far from home. Florida offers a couple of all-inclusive properties ideal for those who don't want to leave the U.S. Consider Bungalows Key Largo, which caters to travelers 21 and older visiting the Florida Keys. In contrast, some properties across the U.S. offer special packages to create your own all-inclusive experience .

What type of accommodations do you prefer?

Cruise ship cabins can be tight, especially if you're traveling with another person (or an entire family). The good news is that there are plenty of choices when it comes to stateroom sizes and configurations, depending on the cruise line and specific ship you choose. Cabins can be as compact as 100 square feet (in the case of Norwegian Epic 's Studio staterooms) or as vast as 4,443 square feet ( Regent Seven Seas Splendor 's lavish two-bedroom Regent Suite).

If space is important to you, plan to budget for a larger cabin, or one with a veranda. The Azamara Quest 's Club Verandah Staterooms (175 square feet) are not much larger than its Interior Club Staterooms (158 square feet), but the addition of a balcony with extra seating, natural light and outdoor access makes them feel much more roomy. For even more space, consider splurging on a suite, which may also add valuable perks like complimentary specialty dining, laundry service and Wi-Fi access. Some suites are designed with families in mind, such as the Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas . The two-story accommodation features an indoor slide, a private game and movie room, a hot tub, ocean views and VIP experiences across the ship.

Back on land, hotel rooms and suites at all-inclusive resorts will typically be more spacious than most cruise ship accommodations, meaning you'll have more square footage to spread out. At the family-friendly all-inclusive Windjammer Landing in Castries, St. Lucia , accommodations run the gamut from 400-square-foot ocean view rooms for two to almost 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom suites that can accommodate up to six people. The property also boasts a selection of luxury beachfront villas that measure up to 4,200 square feet.

What type of entertainment and dining options do you expect?

Cruise vs. All-Inclusive Resort: Which Is Better?

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line

Whether you're traveling solo or with a partner and/or friends, decide whether you'd like to party on vacation (think Carnival Cruise Line ) or prefer a more quiet, intimate getaway (such as a river cruise ). Also think about the entertainment and dining options offered by each. On large cruise vessels, like Norwegian Cruise Line 's ships, you can find infinite eateries, Broadway-calibur entertainment and adults-only nightclubs that stay open into the wee hours of the morning. There are also fun-filled activities for younger travelers, like racetracks, laser tag, aqua parks, rock climbing walls and rope courses. Not all these activities will be included in your fare, so you can choose to pay as you go or purchase packages that offer unlimited access. Fitness classes, spa access and entry into adults-only lounge areas may also come with a fee, as can soft drinks and bottled water throughout the day (unless you have a beverage package).

However, smaller, more intimate ships still offer plenty of fun – albeit with fewer crowds. Cruisers can choose from several dining venues, some of which change their menus daily. For example, Azamara changes its menu every evening in the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. The eatery always offers classic favorites, such as shrimp cocktail and grilled New York strip steak, but it also includes nightly features, many of which are inspired by the ship's destination. Smaller ships will also typically have a few bars or lounges that host entertainment for more mature, refined audiences (think: piano players or other live music in the evenings), plus theaters that feature a different show each night. Still, you might find fun-loving passengers on the dance floor late at night and DJs spinning karaoke tunes at lounges on the ship.

All-inclusive resorts typically offer a wide range of on-site dining venues, entertainment, activities and amenities as well. For example, the gated 7,000-acre Caso de Campo Resort & Villas in La Romana, Dominican Republic, features three golf courses, an equestrian center, tennis courts, skeet and trap shooting, water sports, complimentary merengue lessons and more. Packages at the resort include accommodations, all meals and beverages and access to most (or all) of these activities.

Resorts may also feature more unique amenities than cruise ships. For example, at Caso de Campo, guests can visit Altos de Chavón. Inspired by a 16th-century Mediterranean village, this impressive replica of a medieval hamlet is home to local artisans and boutiques. There's also an archeological museum, the St. Stanislaus Church and a 5,000-seat amphitheater with panoramic views of the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea. After dinner at one of the property's signature restaurants, you can hit the nightclubs, or, if you're lucky, catch a concert in the amphitheater. If you'd like to spend an afternoon or two outside of the property, sign up for a resort excursion (additional fees apply). Travelers can explore nearby beaches by catamaran, visit a local cigar-making factory or take an exhilarating zipline ride through the treetops.

Bottom Line

With so many variables to consider, choosing between a cruise and an all-inclusive resort can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Too often, travelers are lured by low prices and get frustrated trying to select from the many alternatives. Instead, follow the simple process summarized below.

Once you've figured out your travel goals and have decided between a cruise or an all-inclusive resort, you can narrow down your options. If you don't want to fly, check out the cruises that sail from ports in the U.S., all-inclusive resorts within driving distance, and even properties that offer package deals for meals, beverages and excursions. Also, consider the amount of entertainment and activities you or your family are interested in. If you're not traveling with kids and prefer adult-focused venues and activities, book an adults-only resort or cruise that doesn't cater to families.

If you're hoping to avoid crowds, then you might be happiest on a small ocean voyage or at an intimate property. You should also arrange to travel in the offseason. In addition to fewer people, this time of year offers some of the best-discounted cruise fares or room rates. Offseason varies depending on the destination, but it's typically between June and early September in Florida. If you're headed to a resort in Mexico, the Caribbean or the Bahamas, or if you're considering a Caribbean cruise, prices drop dramatically during hurricane season – June 1 to Nov. 30. Europe is a great option for deals from late fall into early spring. There is also a period right before Christmas and after the New Year holiday that offers a window where you can score discounted pricing before the season gets busy again.

Celebrity’s All Included Offer: How It Works & What to Know

While cruising can be among the most relaxing vacations, there are some aspects that can also be annoying.

Particularly, it can sometimes feel like even though you’d paid for a cruise, you’re always spending more once you’re on the ship.

In fact, onboard spending is big business. In Cruzely’s analysis of onboard spending reported by cruise lines , the amount spent once on the ship for an average cruise was around 35-40% of the cruise fare.

Celebrity cruise ship in San Diego

Celebrity Cruises — the luxury brand that’s part of Royal Caribbean — offers a new way of doing things that should make those people happy who normally get annoyed by the extra costs.

The cruise line offers a program   All Included . This program is a more “all inclusive” way of sailing where wi-fi and alcoholic drinks are all included already in the cruise fare.

That can potentially save you from having to spend hundreds of dollars extra once on the ship. As with most things cruising, however, there are often questions about how new policies like this one work. We’ve laid out everything you need to know about Celebrity’s Always Included program below.

In This Article...

What Is Celebrity’s All Included?

This program is a different way of doing things from Celebrity Cruises. Under the offer, passengers have a choice of paying extra and receiving the Classic Beverage Package, and basic wi-fi service included automatically with their cruise fare.

If a passenger prefers, there are options for a “cruise only” fare at a lower rate. Or they can book the All Included fare and not worry about having extra charges for things like drinks once on their cruise.

Note: In October 2023, Celebrity adjusted the package to offer only drinks and wi-fi. Previously, it also included shipboard gratuities.

How Much is Always Included Worth?

With this offer, you get a drink package, and wi-fi included in your fare instead of being an out-of-pocket expense on the ship. So what’s that actually worth?

Most recently, the Classic Drink Package was $89 per person, per day with the additional 20% gratuity included, for a total of $106.80. The basic wi-fi package costs $20 per person, per day. (Note that Celebrity has since removed prices from its website, instead showing prices only when booked. Therefore, prices may be slightly different.)

That comes out to a total of $126.80 per person, per day.

So for a couple sailing on a week cruise, this comes out about $1,800 over the course of the entire trip that they won’t be spending once on the ship.

How Much More Does the All Included Offer Cost?

There’s no such thing as “free” in cruising and that includes the All Included deal. With this offer, you have your choice of either the basic “cruise only” fare or the higher-priced All Included price.

We searched a number of cruises to compare the prices for the same cabin with the offer and without. What we found is that the price difference was consistently $70 more per day, per person for All Included .

For example, we found one 7-day Alaskan cruise sailing in a balcony cabin at a base price of $2,088, or $2,578 per person with All Included. That’s an extra $490, or $70 per day.

You’ll want to check the prices for your specific cruise. But if you planned on buying the drink package and wi-fi, then anything priced below $126 per day makes it worth the price increase. At an extra $70 per day, you’re saving about $55 per person, per day.

Is This a Limited-Time Sale?

Every so often, you’ll see cruise lines offer something similar to this program as a special deal to get passengers to book. That’s what makes the Always Included program different.

This is not a sale or special deal — it’s a long-term change for the cruise line. If you sail Celebrity, you should be able to take advantage of this offer on your cruise.

Which Drink Package Is Included?

what does all inclusive cruise mean

Celebrity offers two drink packages. There’s the Classic Beverage Package and the Premium Package. With this program, the Classic package is included with your fare.

This package covers drinks up to a menu price of $10. At last check, the package costs $89 per day, plus 20% gratuity, for a total of $106.80 per person, per day. This package covers many typical liquors and cocktails, about 15 types of beer, and also soda, premium coffee, bottled water and more.

If you want more drink choices, you can upgrade to the Premium Beverage Package , which covers drinks up to $17 per serving, for an additional $20 per person, per day .

Which Internet Package Is Included?

Celebrity offers two different Internet packages: Basic and Premium. The “Basic” package allows web browsing for things like checking email and social media. The “Premium” package offers streaming capability, as well as things like FaceTime, social media posting and more.

With the Always Included program, you get access to the “Basic” package for each person.

What About Upgrading the Offer?

Under the All Included program, the drink package offered is the “Classic” package and the wi-fi offered is the “Basic” level of service. What if you want to upgrade to a higher-end drink package or better wi-fi?

In that case, you have the option.

To upgrade to the Premium beverage package, Celebrity says you may do so via the cruise line’s online cruise planner , up to two day before the cruise departs. There’s an upcharge of $20 per person per day, which includes the gratuity.

If you want to upgrade to the faster Premium wi-fi service, then the process is the same. In this case, there is an upgrade charge of $10 per person, per day.

Does Everyone Have to Buy the All Included Offer if One Person Does? What About Kids?

Yes, when booking there is no option to select the offer only for some guests. All passengers under a reservation will either be under the All Included offer if selected, or the cruise-only fare.

Keep this in mind when budgeting. If paying extra for the offer to get the drink package, and someone doesn’t drink, it might not be worth it.

So what if you have kids or someone else that doesn’t drink? In this case, Celebrity points to the non-alcoholic drinks available in the package and suggests that kids will still be charged for the upgraded package, although obviously won’t be served alcohol.

Is All Included Worth it?

So is the All Included offer worth the extra money? We suggest looking at a few factors to decide if it’s worth it for you.

As mentioned All Included comes with a higher price tag. In our searches, we found the price bump to be $70 per person, per day. Given that the value received is roughly $127 per person, per day, it is a deal in that aspect.

But would you buy the packages otherwise? If not, then All Included might not be worth it.

If you’re not a big drinker, then it could be that you’d be better off without the program. However, you can still benefit from not having to worry about your drink bill (even for non-alcoholic beverages) at the end of the trip.

Same goes for the wi-fi access. Many people like to use cruises as a way to escape and prefer not to have access. Even so, with All Included, you’ll end up paying for it in your cruise fare.

For those that normally keep their onboard spending to a minimum, then it’s possible you’ll end up paying more for your cruise than you normally would. However, if you’re someone that enjoys having drinks and Internet access, then you likely come out ahead.

Either way, it is a nice feature to have these amenities included, giving you fewer onboard expenses to worry about while enjoying yourself on the ship.

When I look at the Celebrity site, it says, “Tips charged separately” for the All Inclusive offering. It looks like they’ve removed the free gratuities aspect. As such, I just think it’s an incredibly expensive add-on, and just puts me off going on a cruise to be honest.

Yes, it looks like the cruise line changed the package to no longer included tips in the package. We will dive in and update this article soon.

If you have the all included package does this include the 20% gratuities on drinks?

Right, when you go to the bar, you won’t be charged an additional gratuity.

I have already booked and paid for my 7 days mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Rome this Sept. 23rd. Is it too late to add on all inclusive package?

I’d suggest calling the cruise line. Typically you can add packages on up to 48 hours before sailing.

Cruise vs. All-Inclusive Resort: Which Is The Better Deal

By Carnival Cruise Line

If you’re dreaming of sunshine and exotic destinations , you don’t want to drain every last penny from your bank account. Fortunately, two vacation options give you a lot of bang for your buck: a tropical cruise and an all-inclusive resort. To make vacation planning easier, consider these questions.

Do You Prefer One Destination or Many?

Want to tick several dreamy destinations off your bucket list? Then a cruise is the right vacation for you. You can pull into as many as eight different ports of call depending on the duration of your trip, which adds a level of excitement you don’t get from an all-inclusive resort.

Beautiful islands like St. Maarten , St. Kitts , Aruba and Curaçao offer unique charms including landscape, people, cultural influences, history, shopping and local cuisine.

For vacationers who prefer to unpack their bags and stay put, an all-inclusive resort is the obvious choice. Each day, you can enjoy all the amenities and activities your resort offers, but if bad weather hits, you’re stuck indoors.

Cruise ships offer an advantage you might not have thought about. Ship captains can alter their routes to escape bad weather so passengers enjoy uninterrupted warmth and sunshine.

What Types of Pastimes Sound Pleasing?

When it comes to activities, you can find plenty with both vacation options. As part of your price, all-inclusive resorts usually include pool and beach access, use of fitness centers, kids programming and non-motorized water activities like kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkeling.

Activities you pay for may include spa or salon services, day trips and special activities like golf, windsurfing, scuba diving, parasailing or horseback riding. In the evening, resort guests have access to several bars, restaurants and a nightclub.

When it comes to cruising, many of the amenities found at a resort can be found on board as well. For travelers who enjoy a different activity every day, a cruise makes the perfect vacation choice. On Carnival Cruises, free onboard attractions include pools, water slides, adult-only retreats , kids’ camps, lip sync and game show competitions, murder mysteries, sports areas and more.

Evenings on a Carnival ship comes with lots of possibilities without having to venture very far. Choose from a variety of restaurants for dinner, have a cocktail at the pub or piano bar , try your luck at the casino , enjoy a dive-in movie, head to the comedy club, party by the pool, or dance till you drop at the night club.

When you pull into port, pick from a variety of shore excursions to satisfy any whim, from adventure to romance. Explore ancient ruins, zip line above forest canopies, take a sunset sail, or tour breweries by bicycle. These extra activities vary in price to suit your budget.

What Are You Paying For?

If you’re still having trouble choosing between a cruise and an all-inclusive resort, consider what you’re paying for. All-inclusive resorts offer rooms to suit many budgets and a set number of free amenities available for the length of your stay.

Amenities you will pay for usually include rentals for motorized watercraft, special activities and day trips. Food and beverages are often free, but you may have to pay for premium beer, wine and spirits. While guests enjoy access to all restaurants on the property, you may have to book reservations early to enjoy dining in the best ones.

Cruises also offer a selection of rooms to suit different budgets. The price of a cruise covers most onboard activities, but passengers can pay for a few extravagances like spa treatments, hair salon services and some movie tickets. As a cruise passenger, you can also pay for any shore excursions you wish to take, and many can be extremely affordable for the whole family.

When it comes to dining, cruises offer free meals in many eateries, but you may have to pay to dine in others. Cruises also offer beverage packages that lower the cost per drink, so you’re able to enjoy wine, beer, and soda for less. Also on a cruise, you’re able to splurge on the excursions that you want without overpaying for the activities that you don’t.

Have You Considered Costs for Airfare?

When you’re comparing costs between the two vacations, remember to include airfare. If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, you may have to add the price of airfare to a location outside of the United States, and the cost varies based on the season and on consumer demand.

Many cruise ships leave from and return to ports located inside the United States, which might make airfare much less expensive. Depending on your options for available cities, you might even be able to drive to your departure port, making a cruise a very accessible for a lot of guests.

A tropical vacation warms the body and soul, and budget-wise travelers have two great options for a sunny getaway. If your ideal vacation includes lying on the beach by day, hitting the dance floor by night and drinking your fill of tropical cocktails, an all-inclusive resort may be just the ticket. If you’re looking for the flexibility to experience all of that and more, try cruising.

Take a weekend trip to Mexico or a week-long journey to the Western Caribbean . You’re typically able to see more of your destination for less. Along the way, explore history and culture, sample the local cuisine, engage in one-of-a-kind activities from ship to shore, and do something new and different every night.

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

Is Disney Cruise All-Inclusive? A Comprehensive Guide for Families

Feb 7, 2024 | Disney | 0 comments

Is Disney Cruise All-Inclusive

Setting sail on a magical voyage with Disney Cruise Line promises an unforgettable adventure for families. With its iconic characters and storytelling, Disney Cruise blends the enchantment of Disney with the excitement of ocean exploration.

But the pressing question on many vacationers’ minds is. “Is Disney Cruise all-inclusive?” Let’s embark on a journey to discover what “all-inclusive” really includes and whether Disney Cruise meets the mark for family vacationers.

Are food and drink included on Disney Cruises?

Additionally, some cruises may offer dining packages that allow guests to sample a variety of specialty dining options for a discounted price. It is recommended to research and book these packages in advance to ensure availability. Guests with dietary restrictions or food allergies can also be accommodated on the Disney cruise. The crew members are trained to handle special dietary needs and can assist in providing appropriate meal options. For those who prefer a more casual dining experience, there are also plenty of quick-service options available on board. These may include buffets, fast food-style restaurants, and snack bars. It is important to note that gratuities are not included in the cruise fare and are typically added automatically to the final bill. However, guests have the option to adjust the amount or provide additional tips as they see fit. Overall, dining on a Disney cruise offers a variety of choices and experiences for all types of guests. From elegant dinners to casual snacking, there is something for everyone on board. Bon appétit!

Understanding All-Inclusive Disney cruise packages

What exactly does “ all-inclusive ” mean when it comes to cruising? Typically, an all-inclusive cruise package encompasses accommodations, meals, entertainment, and a variety of activities.

The idea is to pay one price upfront and enjoy a worry-free vacation without having to reach for your wallet constantly. But the extent of what’s covered can vary widely between cruise lines.

How Much Does Disney Cruise Cost?

The cost of a Disney Cruise can vary depending on various factors such as the destination, length of cruise, type of stateroom, and time of year. On average, a 7-day Disney Cruise can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 per person. Prices also include meals, entertainment, and access to the ship’s amenities.

It is important to keep in mind that these prices do not include additional expenses such as airfare, shore excursions, and gratuities. It is recommended to budget extra for these expenses.

Additionally, Disney offers various discounts and promotions throughout the year which can help lower the overall cost. These discounts can include special rates for military personnel, Florida residents, and repeat cruisers.

To get an accurate estimate of how much your desired Disney Cruise will cost, it is best to visit their official website or speak with a travel agent. They can provide you with specific pricing based on your preferences and help you find the best deal available.

Overall, while a Disney Cruise may seem like a costly vacation option at first glance, it offers an all-inclusive experience filled with magic and unforgettable memories for travelers of all ages.

Is Disney Cruise’s High-end cruise line

One of the key elements that sets Disney Cruise Line apart from its competitors is its attention to detail when it comes to the onboard experience. From the moment guests step foot on the ship, they are transported into a world of magic and fantasy, with intricate theming and decor inspired by beloved Disney stories.

Another aspect that sets Disney Cruise Line apart is their commitment to providing top-notch entertainment for all ages. From Broadway-style shows featuring iconic Disney characters to engaging activities and events for kids, teens, and adults, there is never a dull moment onboard a Disney cruise.

In addition to these features

Disney Cruise Line also offers unique experiences such as character meet and greets, movie screenings, and even fireworks at sea. And for those looking for some relaxation, there are adults-only areas like the Quiet Cove Pool and the luxurious Senses Spa.

Disney Cruise Line also prides itself on its exceptional dining options. With rotational dining, guests have the opportunity to try different themed restaurants each night while keeping the same servers who get to know their preferences. Additionally, there are multiple dining venues including casual quick-service options and upscale fine dining experiences.

Last but not least, service is at the heart of everything on a Disney cruise. The crew members go above and beyond to make sure every guest has a magical experience. From stateroom hosts who leave towel animal creations on your bed each evening to waitstaff who remember your favorite dessert, the level of care and attention is unparalleled.

In summary, Disney Cruise Line stands out among its competitors not just for its recognizable characters or family-friendly amenities but also for its dedication to creating an unforgettable vacation experience for every guest. It truly is a magical way to explore new destinations while enjoying all of the comforts of a luxury cruise ship.

what does all inclusive cruise mean

All-inclusive resort or cruise – which is best?

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free… Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone,” so sang George Michael in Wham!’s famous 1980s paean to the nascent all-inclusive. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, ‘free’ booze and no bill sounded and looked – if you were anywhere near a pool in Ibiza with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – like holiday utopia.

Drinks weren’t really free, but the idea that you could pay up-front to eat and imbibe, and be assured that you wouldn’t be presented with a terrifying bill at the end, was a novel concept, particularly for budget-conscious families and sun-seeking partygoers.

It still offers considerable appeal in our cash-strapped times, which may explain why all-inclusives have had something of a renaissance. Cruising offers similar peace of mind and plenty to do with kids clubs, waterslides and Disney princesses on board – though alcohol isn’t always free. During both types of holiday, the entertainment comes to you and you’ll never have to flinch at the prices on the menu.

But which type of holiday is best? Our writer put them both to the test.

Destination

Children’s clubs, food and drink.

  • Hidden costs

All-inclusive

Club Med founders Gilbert Trigano and Gérard Blitz, who dreamt up the all-inclusive concept in the 1950s, had beaches and sunshine in mind. But skiers also favoured the all-in pricing model. Europe’s slopes were a win-win for the brand, which opened its first Alpine village at Leysin in Switzerland in 1956 ( clubmed.co.uk ).

Traditional sunshine strongholds Mexico and the Caribbean – where Butch Stewart picked up the mantel with his Sandals brand – still account for a big slice of the all-inclusive pie, but the net has spread further to include Cuba, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde and the Azores. Further afield there are all-inclusive resorts in Kenya, Thailand (mostly Phuket) and the Maldives and Mauritius. Turkish-owned Rixos ( rixos.com ) has recently opened resorts in Qatar and Doha, while Tui ( tui.co.uk ) and First Choice ( firstchoice.co.uk ) offer several resorts in Costa Rica.

Cruise

An average week or 10-day ocean cruise can tick-off several different destinations in one country, or across several countries in one trip. If you have a bit longer, it can take you round the world. Three-month world cruise itineraries cross continents, sail several seas and oceans, visit scores of capital cities and offer hundreds of excursion opportunities.

And let’s not forget off-grid but accessible by water destinations such as the Galapagos, the Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica. River cruises follow the course of most navigable rivers, from the Amazon to the Zambezi. The Mekong, the Mississippi and the Ganges are among their more adventurous destinations.

Whether beach or mountain-based, most all-inclusive resorts feature an activities element. Sandals comes up trumps, with free scuba at its Caribbean dive resorts and multiple rounds of golf and green fees at top courses in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, guests at Rixos resorts in Turkey have free daily access to The Land of the Legends Theme Park in Antalya – which means big savings in peak periods. This Easter, there are also egg hunts as well as giant egg-painting: a week at Premium Tekirova costs from £2,390 for four adults and two children, departing on March 30.

Watersports not your bag? Ikos Oceania in Halkidiki can provide a Tesla Model 3 at no extra cost for one day’s exploration as well as a culture pass to local museums. At Ikos resorts ( ikosresorts.com ), spa access is free between 8am to 8pm.

If you’re after more than a typical beach holiday, check the activities part of a hotel website to find out what’s included. The adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana ( sanctuarycapcana.com ) in the Dominican Republic offers Spanish classes and, at the House of Aia on Mexico’s Riviera Maya ( thehouseofaia.com ), a ‘personal growth’ programme includes 20 classes, ceremonies and rituals from visiting guides.

If you have adventurous teens in tow, the US offers some interesting options. At the historic Castle Hot Springs in Arizona ( castlehotsprings.com ) there’s axe-throwing, cruiser bikes, geothermal hot springs and creekside hammocks for lazing in, while, further north in scenic Wyoming, Scott Dunn has stays at Brush Creek Ranch, set in 30,000 acres of sage-bush prairie where you can ride, fish or take to the landscape by ATV ( scottdunn.com ).

With distractions ranging from rock-climbing walls and ropes courses to simulated surfing, via encounters with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar characters, cruising sets a high bar for activities. And on land, there are excursions – sometimes included – for every type of passenger.

It’s not just families who benefit. Swan Hellenic ( swanhellenic.com ) has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to offer wellbeing voyages, while adult-only ships offer films under the stars or in theatres, lectures from wildlife experts and historians, opportunities for citizen science, celebrity speakers, casinos and activities ranging from dance lessons to art and photography classes. Virgin ( virginvoyages.com ) also puts on DJ sets and pool and dance parties. And let’s not forget the main event – a new place to explore every day.

Newer resorts have really lifted the bar. At its properties along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Rixos rolls out the red carpet for families with a Rixy Kids Club that has cooking and pottery lessons as well as football and dance academies. At Rixos Sungate, where the kids’ club is set around a splash park in a forest, children can learn to code using Lego robotics.

At Ikos Resorts’ collection of luxury properties in Spain and Greece, kids’ clubs are run in line with UK Ofsted standards. Meanwhile, Tui’s family-friendly resorts come with kids’ clubs and a seven-day line-up of activities including creative sessions. Mini Club Med offers trapeze lessons, introductory water-skiing, horse-riding, cooking classes, games and nature discovery activities. For older kids (11-17), there’s film design, DJ sessions and dedicated areas in which to hang out.

If you’re travelling with very small children or have ambitious activities in mind, check the small print: like lots of childcare for babies and toddlers, Petit Club Med and Baby Club Med both cost extra. Motorised water sports often incur a fee at all-inclusives while some resorts impose limits on the number of windsurfing or other tutored lessons.

Cruise ships do a stellar job when it comes to children’s clubs, with all ages well catered for. Most resort ships divide clubs into four age groups and some, including P&O Cruises ( pocruises.com ), offer free babysitting. Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) has an adventure science lab for budding junior scientists as well as baby and tots programmes for those aged six to 36 months. Celebrity Cruises has a STEM at Sea partnership with The Frost Science Museum (Equinox and Edge-class ships; celebritycruises.com ).

P&O Cruises is particularly well set up for those with kids in tow, with round-the-clock children’s clubs on its family-friendly ships and family-oriented shore excursions. MSC Cruises ( msccruises.co.uk ) has baby, mini, junior, young and teen clubs. The latter offers Xbox and PS4 tournaments, a Drone Academy, flash mobs and dance offs. Disney Dream ( disneycruise.disney.go.com ) has some imaginative offerings too, including the Jedi Training Academy and the opportunity to hang out with characters from the Toy Story trilogy.

You get what you pay for. If that’s sun and sea and a good four-star family resort, expect two or three bars and a standard buffet: a week at the Iberostar Bellevue in Montenegro costs £1,562 in mid-May ( iberostar.com ). Pay a bit more and you’ll be rewarded with more imaginative menus. At Ikos Porto Petro in Majorca, five à la carte restaurants serve meals inspired by Michelin-starred chefs (from £2,470pp with Sovereign; sovereign.com ).

Ikos also has curated “dine out” programmes that encourage guests to eat at local restaurants – including a rustic tapas joint in Estepona, an agriturismo in Ibiza and a buzzy beachfront spot in Marbella. Sandals ( sandals.co.uk ) has similar in Curaçao and Nassau. Caribbean all-inclusives generally offer three or four restaurants – and maybe a pop-up beach venue or barbecue night.

Think cruise, think buffet, right? Wrong. Standards are high, with new ships offering a plethora of cuisines, dining styles and venues along with healthy options and dietary alternatives. You’re as likely to find vegan muffins and bee-pollen at the breakfast buffet as a Full English.

Silversea and Virgin have ditched the buffet altogether. Partnerships with chefs including Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard (P&O Cruises), Relais & Chateau (Silversea; silversea.com ), Jacques Pepin (Holland America Line; hollandamerica.com ) and Thomas Keller (Seabourn; seabourn.com ) have also made a difference. Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) has a Japanese restaurant masterminded by Nobu while wine presenter Olly Smith helms the Glasshouse on some P&O ships.

Silversea, Holland America Line and Oceania ( oceaniacruises.com ) are highly regarded among foodies and Regent Seven Seas ( rssc.com ) offers some stylish settings while Celebrity’s newer ships have roof-top gardens and over-the-sea dining. Fine dining can cost extra, depending on the ship, but expect to pay around £15 on top for three courses, which might just include one of the finest steaks you’ll ever eat.

All-inclusive

It’s a broad-brush summation but for something established, refined and ‘old-school’ romantic – think castaway beaches, palm fronds gently buffeted by warm trade winds, knock-out views and honeymoon havens – the Caribbean is a safe bet. The likes of Jumby Bay ( oetkercollection.com ), Spice Island Resort ( spiceislandbeachresort.com ), Necker ( virginlimitededition.com ) and Curtain Bluff ( curtainbluff.com ) are famous for a reason.

The Maldives attracts a discerning international clientele while, in Europe, there are affordable package resorts where screaming kids are well tolerated. At the stylish new kids on the block (think Ikos and Grecotel Luxme; grecotel.com ), Poppy and Miles only scream in the privacy of the rooms however.

Skiers are too busy skiing, too knackered or too busy partying to care about trifles like the vibe. If in doubt opt for Club Med, where most people speak French.

It varies enormously across ships. River ships are tranquil, geared to sightseeing and generally follow an up-early and early-to-bed routine. Large resort ships can feel like theme parks, with entertainment into the wee hours; smaller ships go out of their way to leave passengers alone and provide impressive libraries and spaces for quiet contemplation. Viking ( vikingcruises.co.uk ), Silversea and Seabourn excel at this. Then there are the tall ships such as Sea Cloud ( seacloud.com ) and those in the Star Clipper fleet ( starclippercruises.co.uk ), where you’ll spend most of your time on deck watching the wind make the sails dance.

Some liners take a ship-within-a-ship approach, with exclusive areas, pools and services – at a cost. MSC has the Yacht Club while Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ), Royal Caribbean and P&O have premium areas with pools and separate menus. Cunard ( cunard.com ) has the Grills Suites.

If you’re after a more intimate, house-party atmosphere (complete with Surrey types, ex-boat owners and ‘non-cruisers’), opt for a yacht-style cruise ship from Ponant ( uk.ponant.com ), SeaDream ( seadream.com ), Scenic Eclipse ( scenic.co.uk ) or one of a handful of Windstar ships ( windstarcruises.com ).

Hidden costs All-inclusive

Do question the headline price, especially if booking via a third party. In January 2024, a Which? survey of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed key omissions from some operators, including soft drinks. Those who booked with the cheapest provider, lastminute.com , were forking out an extra £367 per week on average for extras.

Operators take different approaches to inclusions. BA Holidays says: “Expect your holiday to include flights and accommodation, all three meals and snacks in between. Drinks are included too but expect house wine and local spirits unless otherwise stated.” EasyJet’s small print states: “What’s included in the all-inclusive package varies vastly between hotels. When booking your holiday be sure to look at the board description.”

Premium restaurants often cost more, but at the Oaks IBN Battuta in Dubai for example (where a week costs from £989pp through loveholidays.com ) the price includes à la carte restaurants and in-room breakfast. In all cases the two-clicks-away small print was clear. Read it. If in doubt, use the chat function, talk to a travel agent or pick up the phone.

All cruises include accommodation, dining, entertainment and access to pools and the other fun facilities, but Wi-Fi, drinks – alcohol and soda – and tips and room service might not be included. Tips are automatically added to cruise bills on a per passenger, per day basis. Expect to pay for service on spa and beauty treatments and bar drinks.

If you plan on drinking every day, pay for a drinks package (there are alcohol-free packages, too). Celebrity Cruises alcoholic drinks packages start at around £55 per day and Cunard’s soft drinks package starts from around £8.50 per day. Princess Cruises’ Wi-Fi, tips and drinks bundle costs £50pp per day ( princess.com ).

Though you’ll still pay extra to tip for beauty services, some truly all-inclusive lines also include Wi-Fi, limitless premium drinks, a free mini-bar, most service fees and some excursions. Some also include airfares and a pre- or post-cruise hotel night. Take a look at Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Viking, Crystal and Seabourn.

Which wins?

The all-inclusive concept has evolved – there’s no room for holiday snobbery in 2024. If all you want is a hassle-free place to relax by a pool or on the beach and forget about daily expenses, this is as good as it gets. But if you intend to stay longer than a week or haven’t been to the destination before, do some research. You may tire of the same sand, sun loungers and restaurants while venturing out to drink and dine makes little financial sense.

If you’ve a thirst for new places, a cruise offers all of the above plus the bonus of a new port of call most days – without the need to unpack. You’ll never get bored of the changing views and, as for feeling claustrophobic, you can disembark every day (though you don’t have to). Plenty of ships overnight in port, so you can dine ashore too.

Cruises score bonus points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences too. Unless you own a boat, how else do you experience the romance of a dawn arrival in Manhattan, a sunset sail out of Sydney or your first glimpse of porpoising penguins in the Galapagos?

“All-inclusive” is a term you’ve probably heard if you’ve searched for a vacation destination recently, but what, exactly, does it mean? The dictionary definition is “including everything or everyone,” but when we’re talking about all-inclusive in terms of travel, it’s not quite that simple.

In this post, we’ll show you what all-inclusive really means when it comes to vacations, resorts, and cruises — and how it all works.

Plus, since we’re big fans of points and miles here, we’ll also go over how you can book an all-inclusive vacation with points (yes, it’s possible).

What Does All-inclusive Mean?

All-inclusive is a term used when more than just the cost of the hotel room or cruise cabin is included in the price. Traditionally, this means all meals, snacks, and beverages are included in the price of the trip. However, there can be many variations on the term all-inclusive. Sometimes all alcoholic beverages are included, but often it only includes select brands. Activities may be included in an all-inclusive price, but many times they aren’t.

Don’t worry, though, because we’ll show you what to look for and how to determine exactly what’s included in your all-inclusive vacation.

“European plan” sounds like a fancy option that may be all-inclusive, but in reality, it’s just a way of saying that the cost includes your room only . If you’re looking for an option that includes food, drinks, and activities, steer clear of a European plan booking.

“Full board” generally means that in addition to a room, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included . It differs from all-inclusive because full board doesn’t typically include snacks, drinks (outside of meal time), or activities. Full-board accommodations can also have more restrictions on meals, often having set meal times and menus.

“Half board” generally means that breakfast and dinner are included in the room price . No other meals or drinks outside of meal times are included.

Hot Tip: Whether booking an all-inclusive, full-board, or half-board rate, keep in mind that pricing is per person , unlike traditional hotel rooms or European-plan hotels that charge by the room (typically accommodating 1 to 4 people for the same price).

Many travelers wonder if an all-inclusive resort is worth it when they’re planning a vacation. There’s no simple answer because the value of an all-inclusive resort varies based on several factors .

An all-inclusive resort may be worth it if:

  • You’re looking for a relaxing vacation without much exploring.
  • You’re traveling with a large group with differing budgets.
  • You like the idea of knowing exactly how much your trip will cost before you travel.

An all-inclusive might not be worth it if:

  • You enjoy eating at local restaurants.
  • You plan on spending lots of time outside the resort exploring your destination.
  • You typically don’t spend much on food and drinks on vacation.

How Do All-inclusive Resorts Work?

Let’s get into how all-inclusive resorts actually work. you’ll pay for your vacation upfront based on the number of nights you’ll be staying. Typically, all-inclusive resorts are priced per person .

Upon arrival, you’ll often get a wristband indicating you’re an all-inclusive guest (although some resorts may not do this). After that, you’re free to dine and drink at most establishments on the resort property. If there are things — like top-shelf liquor — that aren’t included, those can be billed to your room.

Sheraton Grand Rio de Janeiro all inclusive wristband and Apple Watch

A big draw for all-inclusive resorts is that alcohol is usually included . This can be a big money-saver if you’re planning to enjoy some poolside cocktails during your vacation. Typically, wine and beer along with basic mixed drinks are included, with top-shelf liquor and wines by the bottle often carrying extra charges.

However, this isn’t always the case , as some all-inclusive brands, like Sandals Resorts , also include premium alcoholic drinks, while other brands, like Miraval, don’t include any alcoholic drinks.

When staying at an all-inclusive resort, the subject of tipping can be confusing. Generally, you won’t be expected to tip at the time of purchase since part of the beauty of an all-inclusive resort is not having to worry about bringing credit cards or cash to the beach or pool.

Some resorts will charge you a daily tip amount while some prohibit tipping altogether. If the tipping policy isn’t on your resort’s website, you can always send an email before your stay or inquire about the tipping policy at the front desk.

Unless your resort prohibits it, tipping is always appreciated by the resort staff for a job well done.

All-inclusive resorts don’t include flights, so you’ll need to book those separately. However, many resorts and travel-booking websites will offer vacation packages that include a combination of hotel, flight, and sometimes a rental car. These are priced by person and can often offer significant savings over booking a hotel and flight separately.

Cruises are all-inclusive by nature, even though they’re rarely described as such. Most cruises include all meals and snacks throughout the day as a part of the cruise fare. Alcoholic drinks and any beverages outside of the dining rooms or the buffet typically cost extra and can be purchased à la carte or as part of a beverage package.

Keep in mind that many cruises offer specialty dining locations that come with an additional charge in addition to complimentary dining options.

How To Book All-inclusive Resorts Using Points

You may be surprised to know that you can book all-inclusive resorts using points . This is a great way to keep your out-of-pocket vacation costs exceptionally low since your food and drinks will be included in the room rate.

Let’s take a look at all-inclusive hotel options for some of the major hotel brands.

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Hyatt is a fan-favorite when it comes to booking hotels with points because there are so many opportunities to get great value. Hyatt made big moves in 2022 with the acquisition of Apple Leisure Group , adding over 100 all-inclusive properties under 7 brands to its portfolio .

Now, Hyatt has 10   all-inclusive brands within the Inclusive Collection :

  • Alua Hotels & Resorts
  • Breathless Resorts & Spas
  • Dreams Resorts & Spas
  • Hyatt Vivid Hotels & Resorts (coming soon)
  • Hyatt Zilara
  • Impressions by Secrets
  • Secrets Resorts & Spas
  • Sunscape Resorts & Spas
  • Zoëtry Wellness & Spa Resorts

Hyatt also expanded its award chart to include a section for all-inclusive resorts, making it easy to calculate how many points you’ll need for your vacation.

* Based on double occupancy for a standard room

Additionally, Miraval Resorts and Spas are part of the Hyatt portfolio. These adults-only, all-inclusive wellness retreats offer unique activities, luxury accommodations, and perks like a $175 per person per night resort credit. The brand even has its own loyalty program — Miraval Authentic Circle .

There are currently 3 Miraval locations, with a fourth due to open in 2025.

  • Miraval Arizona
  • Miraval Austin
  • Miraval Berkshires
  • Miraval The Red Sea (opening in 2025)

Hot Tip: You can earn World of Hyatt points in many ways, including through hotel stays and credit card spending , or they can be transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt Rewards .

Sanctuary Cap Cana Marriott All Inclusive

Marriott Bonvoy currently offers 31 all-inclusive properties across the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America , plus additional resorts that offer all-inclusive or full-board rates.

Since Marriott doesn’t have an award chart, prices can vary dramatically. When searching for a room at an all-inclusive resort be sure to include the correct number of people in the room for accurate pricing.

You’ll notice that the price in cash for 1 or 2 people is different, but the price in points is the same. That’s because the points cost is based on 2 adults in 1 room and the cost will be displayed for your entire stay as opposed to a per-night price.

Cost of All inclusive Marriott resort in points

Hot Tip: There are lots of ways to earn Marriott Bonvoy points to stay at an all-inclusive resort. If you’re just a few points short, you can transfer points to Marriott Bonvoy from Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards .

Kimpton Hacienda All Inclusive

IHG made big moves in late 2022 in the world of all-inclusive resorts by partnering with Iberostar to add 70 of its beachfront all-inclusive properties to the IHG One Rewards program under a new brand called Iberostar Beachfront Resorts . Iberostar Beachfront Resorts will be bookable through IHG later in 2023.

Until then, guests can use IHG One Rewards points to book these all-inclusive resorts:

  • Holiday Inn Resort: Aruba-Beach Resort Resort & Casino (All-inclusive option)
  • Holiday Inn Resort Ixtapa All-Inclusive
  • Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay All-Inclusive
  • Kimpton Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort, Spa, & Nature Park (coming in 2024)

Booking IHG all inclusive with points

When booking an all-inclusive IHG property, it’s easy to toggle back and forth between the price in points and cash.

If you need more IHG One Rewards points , you can use an IHG-branded credit card or transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Bottom Line: IHG currently has 3 all-inclusive resorts, however, a partnership with Iberostar will bring 70 more locations to the IHG One Rewards program in 2023.

Hilton Cancun All Inclusive Resort

Hilton currently has 13 all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, Mexico, Egypt, and Türkiye.

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Antalya-Kemer
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Bodrum Isil Club Resort
  • Hilton Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort
  • Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme Resort & Spa
  • Hilton La Romana, An All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort
  • Hilton La Romana, An All-Inclusive Family Resort
  • Hilton Marsa Alam Nubian Resort
  • Hilton Playa del Carmen, An All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort
  • Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa
  • Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort
  • Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-Inclusive Resort
  • Mangrove Beach Corendon Curaçao All-Inclusive Resort, Curio by Hilton
  • The Yucatan Playa del Carmen All-Inclusive Resort, Tapestry by Hilton

Since Hilton doesn’t have an award chart, point rates can be all over the map. The price will be shown per room and is usually the same for up to 2 adults (note that the price in cash will differ for 1 or 2 people). The price for adding kids varies by location.

Booking Hilton All Inclusives with points

If you have at least 5,000 Hilton Honors points you can use the Points & Money feature which allows you to pay for your room partially with points and partially with a credit card. Of course, there are lots of ways to earn Hilton Honors points , such as transferring points from Amex Membership Rewards, if your goal is to keep your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible.

Bottom Line: Hilton has 13 all-inclusive properties across the Caribbean, Mexico, Egypt, and Türkiye which can be booked using Hilton Honors points.

Wyndham Alltra Cancun All Inclusive Resort

Wyndham has 27 all-inclusive resorts across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Brazil. The majority of these resorts are in Dominican Republic (10 resorts) and Mexico (12 resorts).

Guests can book any of these resorts with Wyndham Rewards points, and since Wyndham only has 3 pricing tiers, you know you’ll pay 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points per night for any Wyndham hotel.

Booking a Wyndham all inclusive with points

Plus, if you have 1 of the 3 Wyndham Rewards Earner credit cards, you’ll pay 10% less when booking a room with points.

  • Wyndham Rewards ® Earner℠ Card
  • Wyndham Rewards ® Earner℠ Plus Card
  • Wyndham Rewards ® Earner℠ Business Card

You can also transfer points from Citi ThankYou Rewards and Capital One Miles .

Bottom Line: Wyndham has 27 all-inclusive resorts that can be booked with points. Rooms cost 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points per night, however, Wyndham Rewards Earner cardholders pay 10% less.

Atlantique View Resort and Spa Ascend Hotel Collection

There are a couple of benefits to using Choice Privileges points to book all-inclusive resorts. First, the price in points is the same for all room categories, so you can book a room with a great view or even a suite at the same price as a basic room . Second, anyone who has a Citi Premier ® Card and/or a Citi Prestige ® Card (no longer available to new applicants) will enjoy a fantastic transfer rate — Citi ThankYou Points transfer to Choice at a 1:2 ratio.

American Express Membership Rewards points and Capital One miles also transfer to Choice but at a less-desirable 1:1 ratio.

Choice Hotels offers 11 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Dominica. You can easily search for a resort by selecting All-Inclusive Resorts in the search filtering options on Choice’s website .

Choice All Inclusive Resorts

There’s 1 more all-inclusive resort you can book with Choice Privileges points. Radisson Blu Punta Cana, an All-Inclusive Resort , is part of the Radisson Rewards Americas program which was acquired by Choice in 2022 . While each loyalty program is still separate (they will be integrated later in 2023), you can transfer points between them at a rate of 1 Choice Privileges point to 2 Radisson Rewards Americas points .

Bottom Line: There are 11 Choice Hotels all-inclusive resorts plus an additional Radisson Hotels Americas all-inclusive location that you can book with points, but the availability (even when paying cash) is poor.

All-inclusive is a common term used to describe a hotel or resort that includes all meals, snacks, and beverages in the room cost. These locations are priced per person, so it’s important to be accurate when searching for a resort so you’ll see the correct price.

All of the major hotel programs — Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, Choice, and Wyndham — offer all-inclusive resorts that can be booked with points. This can be a great option for travelers looking to keep their out-of-pocket costs low since meals are included in the cost of the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all-inclusive resorts really all-inclusive.

While the definition of all-inclusive can vary a bit, it generally refers to a hotel or resort that includes all meals, snacks, and beverages in the cost of the room. Things that may not be included at an all-inclusive resort are extra activities, tips, top-shelf liquor, and spa services.

Does all-inclusive mean the flight is included?

Generally, a flight is not included in an all-inclusive rate. However, there are websites that sell vacation packages that can include a flight in addition to an all-inclusive resort.

Does all-inclusive include food and alcohol?

Generally, yes, all-inclusive rates include food and some alcohol, however top-shelf liquors or wines by the bottle often cost extra.

Is room service included in all-inclusive?

Room service at all-inclusive resorts can vary, but it is often complimentary.

Do all-inclusive cruises include alcohol?

Many cruise lines, with the exception of some high-end brands, don’t include alcohol in the cost of the cruise. However, beverage packages, which can include alcohol, are available for an extra cost.

Do you tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Every all-inclusive resort has its own tipping policy, so it’s a smart idea to check before your trip so you know what to expect. Unless tips are forbidden, it’s always appreciated to tip above and beyond what’s included for excellent service.

What are the disadvantages of all-inclusive packages for destinations?

One of the big disadvantages of staying at an all-inclusive resort is that there’s little motivation to explore the local area and dine at local restaurants. If you enjoy immersing yourself in a destination’s culture or eating at a variety of restaurants, an all-inclusive resort may not be the best choice for your vacation.

How much money should I bring on an all-inclusive vacation?

While the amount of money you’ll need on an all-inclusive vacation will vary based on your resort and activities, it’s always a good idea to bring plenty of small bills with you for tipping as well as a good credit card without foreign transaction fees .

Marella Cruises, What Does ‘All Inclusive’ Include?

Marella cruises – what does ‘all inclusive’ include.

In September 2018 I took my first Marella cruise – and have done many since.

I knew that the line offered ‘all-inclusive’ cruises -but I honestly had no idea what this meant.

Every day of the cruise I was surprised when I realised that another thing I’d pay extra for on another cruise line was included in Marella’s cruise fare.

marella discovery

All-inclusive makes booking a cruise so easy, you pay your cruise fare and that’s it – done!

Marella includes flights and transfers in their cruise fares, so it is a very easy option.

In this post, I will talk about:

  • Which ships are all-inclusive
  • Included restaurants
  • Included drinks
  • What isn’t included and extra costs

Which Marella Ships Are All-Inclusive?

All Marella ships are now all-inclusive as standard.

Do You Have To Pay Tips And Gratuities On Marella Cruises?

No! All the tips and gratuities are included in your cruise fare. Gratuities will never be added on at restaurants or at the bar.

There is no pressure to tip any extra at all – In fact, I would say it’s discouraged.

When given a receipt in a speciality restaurant there won’t be a line to add an extra tip, the receipt instead will say ‘Remember, all tips are included’.

What drinks are included?

Draught beers and cider, wine by the glass, spirits and aperitifs, cocktails, soft drinks and fruit juice.

Marella Discovery drinks in nbar eleven old smokey

I am SO impressed with the number of drinks that were included. Every cocktail I could name was on the included list.

Having a drink was one of my favourite free things to do onboard the Marella Discovery.

Here are 7 more: Marella Discovery – 8 free ‘must do’ activities.

What else is included?

Your cruise fare covers your onboard accommodation, meals in a variety of restaurants and entertainment while onboard.

The fare also includes return flights (Unless of course, you don’t want this, then you can book cruise only.)

Marella also includes coach transfers and port taxes in their cruise fare.

Find out about the Spanish Coasts Marella cruise I took just after the Covid pandemic. The paperwork and Covid testing we had to undergo were stressful – but the cruise itself was great…

The ship we sailed on was the Marella Explorer 2. Find out all about that trip here:

All of the Marella ships have previously sailed with other cruise companies but were then refurbished to a high standard and given a new life with Marella.

Marella ships have different restaurants onboard. Below are my experiences of the ones on Marella Discovery.

What Restaurants are Included on the Marella Discovery?

47° is the main restaurant onboard the Marella Discovery.

We ate here loads of times and never had a bad meal. The dress code is ‘Smart’ and men are asked to wear a polo shirt or collared shirt.

The dress code seemed pretty relaxed and the atmosphere in the restaurant was always friendly. You could happily eat here every day of the cruise. The restaurant is also open for lunch during sea days.

Gallery 47°

Gallery 47° is the top level of the main dining room on the right-hand side. It has a different menu from the rest of the downstairs restaurant – but isn’t too different.

The menu is Italian and the food was good. A great alternative to the main dining room if you fancy something slightly different.

Snack Shack

This one is a personal favourite of mine and also mentioned on my:

8 free ‘must do’ Marella Discovery activities list.

The Snack Shack is a place to get grab-and-go food. It is decorated with brightly coloured beach huts and seats. It serves hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings, fish and chips and loads more!

There are sandwiches and wraps ready to grab and go at any time as well as cookies, brownies and fruits.

‘Islands’ Buffet

Big buffet spreads are laid out in this restaurant, with show-cooking stations on-hand to offer things like breakfast omelettes, and carvery roasts in the evening. You can grab snacks in between meals, too.

The thing that I liked most about the buffet was that it very rarely closed.

I like to be able to eat almost 24/7 – so this made me happy! The food here was good – nothing incredible but nothing bad at all.

Marella Cruises Discovery Buffet Islands Food

Glass House

The Glass House is a restaurant located by the inside pool. During the day you can grab ‘deli-style’ bites here such as wraps and smoothies. This opens at 11 am and continues until 6 pm.

In the evening the place transforms into a restaurant which serves Tapas, Pizza and they also some Hot Stone Cooking *.

* There is a charge for some items – like cooking on hot stones .

Marella Discovery Glass House Restaurant Seating Menu

* Marella Discovery Tip  – try a flatbread pizza.

They have a few options on the menu as well as a ‘create your own’ option.

I try to avoid too much dairy, so took the cheese off of my pizza each time that we visited. They also give you bread baskets here before your meal that are amazing. Jono and I managed to eat a whole bread basket each before our pizzas even came. ..

Marella Discovery Glass House Pizza

What is included On Marella Cruises for kids?

Kids clubs are included on all of the Marella ships.

They hold activities like face painting, pyjama parties, quizzes, movie nights and video games.

Children’s menus can be found in all of the restaurants, and kids can use cots and high chairs anytime without any charge.

Marella Explorer 2 is the only “adult-only” ship in the Marella fleet.

What isn’t covered?

As on most cruise lines, Wi-Fi isn’t included as standard.

I actually really enjoy not having Wi-Fi onboard as it gives me an opportunity to really relax.

You can buy Wi-Fi if you’d like to, but I probably wouldn’t bother if I wasn’t working onboard and running a business.

Marella does have an App you can use to check the daily schedule. There is no need to buy WiFi to use this App. Find out why here:

You Don’t Need to Pay For Wi-Fi To Use a Cruise Line App – Here’s Why

All excursions cost extra.

I was really impressed with the cost of Marella’s excursions. Most half-day tours that we booked cost around the £30-£40.

This is REALLY competitive compared to other mainstream cruise lines.

We also booked one of Marella’s bike tours which they run in almost every port. During these tours, you use bikes that Marella keep onboard. I would definitely recommend it.

Speciality restaurants

There are a few speciality restaurants onboard which cost extra.

We tried almost all of the speciality restaurants onboard and were really impressed with all of them.

The speciality restaurants on Marella Discovery are:

  • Surf and Turf
  • Hot Stones at the Glass House

There is an extra charge for room service onboard.

I rarely use this – so that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It is pretty common for this to cost extra on cruises.

The mini bar isn’t included and neither is bottled water – again this is rarely included on cruises.

Even on some of the bigger lines like NCL bottled water isn’t included even in the most expensive alcoholic beverage package.

They are basically like a festival at sea, with bands, dressing up (costume dress) and lots of partying.

Is a Marella cruise good value?

I think that the Marella cruises I’ve been on offer really good value.

Their fares include accommodation, transport, drinks, entertainment and food as standard.

I can’t think of another mainstream cruise line that offers value quite like Marella, I’ve certainly never been on a cruise line where so much is Included in the cruise fare.

River Cruises

“Marella” is the Ocean Cruises brand name of the company Tui. Tui also offers river cruises in Europe, branded as “Tui River Cruises.”

They are far cheaper than other river cruise options, and there is a lot included in the price.

Braving the Shave for Macmillan Cancer Support

This is a bit of a strange thing to write but… I shaved my head onboard the Marella Discovery.

The passengers of the Marella Discovery raised an amazing £1500 at my headshave. We raised over £4800 in total.
