NEEDTOBREATHE on Touring with Taylor Swift: “We Learned a Lot”

by Annie Reuter October 7, 2023, 8:00 am

NEEDTOBREATHE are in the midst of their 2023 CAVES World Tour in support of their ninth studio album, Caves . While the band is no stranger to arenas, NEEDTOBREATHE has Taylor Swift to thank for showing them the ropes in 2011 when they joined her Speak Now World Tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

At the time, NEEDTOBREATHE was performing in 2,500-capacity rock clubs when they got the call to join Swift on her sold-out arena tour. In an interview with American Songwriter, NEEDTOBREATHE shares why they were hesitant to take Swift up on her tour offer and what they ultimately learned from the country-turned-pop star.

“Honestly, we took a long, long time thinking about trying to say no because we were right in that place of selling out the Ryman and the Tabernacle in Atlanta, and all these rock clubs and things were happening,” NEEDTOBREATHE frontman Bear Rinehart tells American Songwriter. “She was much younger at the time, too. So it was very Cinderella-era Taylor.

“But, we learned a ton about performing,” he continues, ultimately taking Swift up on her offer to open for the trek. “She’s one of the hardest workers in music, obviously. Translating and relating to people, we’ve been able to lean on [our fans] seeing us face to face in the rock clubs. All of a sudden, now, we’re on the video screen and all they’re seeing is your mug. So, now the actions have to be bigger to translate the feeling that you get on stage. I think we got a lot better as a band during that process, even though it was a little bit painful at times.”

NEEDTOBREATHE confesses that they weren’t sure if they won over any concertgoers during their 2011 trek with Swift, but time has proved otherwise. Keyboardist Josh Lovelace says they’re frequently approached by fans who caught them on the Speak Now World Tour.

“What’s crazy is these 13-year-old kids who were there to see Taylor Swift are now 25 and coming to our shows,” Loveless marvels. “At the time we were like, ‘Are we reaching these people?’ Now they’re growing up and they’ve been listening to, hopefully, the band for a decade now. … I think it was a really good opportunity for us to meet new people, make new fans. We learned a lot, played a lot of big places. It was like 90-something shows in six months.”

Now headlining their own arena tour, NEEDTOBREATHE looks back with appreciation for Swift’s invitation to open for her in 2011.

“I think we realize it more now than we did then,” Rinehart admits. “A lot of times it felt like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if anybody paid attention during that. Maybe five people liked it.’ But it obviously was much bigger than that. I think the big takeaway to me was the next tour we did was for a record called The Reckoning and so much of what we learned from the arena thing we were able to put back into amphitheaters. It really stuck with us, in terms of relating to the audience, especially talking. I mean, we were just a rock and roll band. We didn’t talk. We just played the songs. … And you realize you’re trying to have a relationship with the audience, obviously. She’s one of the best at doing that. So I think we learned a lot.”

NEEDTOBREATHE: The 2023 Caves World Tour

November 3, 2023 – Steelhouse – Omaha, NE

The 2023 Caves World Tour by NEEDTOBREATHE is a mesmerizing odyssey that transcends the boundaries of music and brings a profound sense of unity and connection to audiences worldwide. As a long-time fan of the band, I had high expectations, and I can confidently say that those expectations were not only met but exceeded in every possible way. The tour’s name itself, “Caves,” immediately hints at the mysterious and immersive experience that awaits attendees. From the moment the lights dimmed and the stage came to life, it was evident that this tour was something truly special. NEEDTOBREATHE’s signature blend of rock, folk, and soul was presented with an intensity and passion that left the audience breathless. The show opened with a breathtaking performance of “The Cave,” setting the tone for an emotional and electrifying night. The band’s musicianship and vocals were nothing short of exceptional. Bear Rinehart’s powerful voice soared through Steelhouse, capturing the hearts of everyone in the audience. What truly sets the Caves World Tour apart is its artistic and immersive stage design. The stage was transformed into a mystical underground cavern, complete with hanging vines, stunning visuals, burning candles and incense, and clever lighting that created an otherworldly atmosphere. As the band delivered hit after hit, the visuals adapted seamlessly to each song, enhancing the storytelling and emotional depth of the performance. Throughout the show, the band seamlessly blended their classics like “Who Am I” and “Brother” with songs from their latest album, creating a harmonious fusion of old and new. The setlist had a perfect ebb and flow, guiding the audience through an emotional rollercoaster that kept everyone captivated. NEEDTOBREATHE’s connection with their audience was evident. They shared personal anecdotes, expressing their gratitude for their fans and the support they’ve received over the years. It was this authentic interaction that made the night feel intimate, even with a sold-out house. The band’s chemistry on stage was undeniable, and their musical prowess was nothing short of extraordinary. The solos and instrumental interludes showcased their individual talents, making it evident that they are a group of musicians who genuinely love what they do. The three-song encore performance included “Temporary Tears,” “Dreams,” and “Washed by the Water”. It was a sublime ending to a night filled with heart, soul, and raw energy.

The band’s ability to touch the heart and soul of their audience is unparalleled, and their dedication to delivering an exceptional performance is truly admirable. If you have the opportunity to attend this tour, don’t miss it; it’s a spiritual and musical pilgrimage that you’ll carry with you for a long time!

Needtobreathe Survived Dark Times to Become an Unlikely Arena Headliner

By Garret K. Woodward

Garret K. Woodward

It’s six miles or so from Furman University to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. But for Bear Rinehart, lead singer of rock act Needtobreathe , that journey took over two decades.

“It’s way bigger than we really ever thought it actually would be,” Rinehart tells Rolling Stone . “And the fact we’re still doing it seems way longer. If you asked me, ‘Are you going to do it for 10 years?’ I’d say probably not. That would seem crazy.”

Perched on a backstage couch at Bon Secours, Rinehart is getting ready to take the stage in front of a crowd of thousands. While the rest of Needtobreathe meanders around, Rinehart’s eyes peer out from underneath a flat-brim hat pulled down low, shooting a look of intensity and seriousness.

“But at the same time, we thought we’d be huge within a year,” Rinehart, now 43, laughs. “And we were dumb enough [to think that] coming out of college.

The long, winding road of Needtobreathe begins on the campus of Furman circa 2001. Rinehart, a wide receiver on the school’s football team, began playing local cafes with his brother, Bo. With their father a South Carolina pastor, the siblings were raised around gospel music — a vocal style and vibrato that remains at the heart of Bear’s ethereal stage presence.

“Even when I was in high school, I started writing songs and thinking, ‘I’m going to have a band,’” Rinehart says. “I came to Furman and roomed with a guy I knew who played drums. There was another guy in our hallway who played. I spent more time dreaming of what the career was going to look like than [paying attention] in class.”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Selling out the Handlebar was the thing, and they all came to see us,” Rinehart says.

Crossing the 20-year mark is something Rinehart mulls with both amusement and disbelief as he recounts the steps — and missteps — that led to the group succeeding on the arena level. That’s a rare feat for rock bands these days, especially one that almost fell apart 13 years ago.

Around that time, Needtobreathe were at a breaking point. Rinehart’s forthcoming about how dire things were in the group — overzealous egos and substance abuse both played a role — and the darkness that consumed a band that first started in the Christian music world.

“If we want to keep doing this, we can’t do that anymore,” Rinehart says. “And all of us were growing up, which I think is a hard thing to do when people are telling you you’re great every night. It’s hard to look in the mirror and go, ‘Well, maybe this is my fault.’”

Rinehart says he ran the band the way a football team is coached, where individuals could be penalized for dropping the ball. He once described his ambition to RS as “toxic.”

Noah Kahan, Hozier Set for Pilgrimage Festival 2024

Needtobreathe's bear rinehart struggled with 'toxic' ambition. he learns to chill out with solo project wilder woods, kings of leon share one-take music video for single 'nothing to do'.

Rinehart’s brother Bo left the band in 2020, yet another hurdle for Needtobreathe. But the group was determined to persevere.

“Part of us getting over that period was finding how to use counseling and [asking] for help,” Rinehart says. “Talking about things took away the power of the secrets that you have. When you say those things out loud, you realize, ‘Oh, I’m going to have to deal with this’ — there isn’t going to be somebody else who’s going to fix this.”

The band just wrapped a nationwide tour in support of their latest LP, Caves . Like past efforts, it’s a rock album of conflict — darkness and light, triumphs and tribulations. They’ll return to the road to promote Caves in the spring, teaming up with Judah & The Lion.

Needtobreathe are at their best in the live setting, where they take what’s been cultivated in the studio and allow it to erupt onstage. Their shows can recall those of Imagine Dragons, Coldplay or the Avett Brothers.

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

Taylor swift unveils double album 'the tortured poets department: the anthology', dickey betts, allman brothers band singer-guitarist, dead at 80, taylor swift’s new album opens with a stevie nicks poem.

Bounding onstage in Greenville, Needtobreathe bulldozes the audience with a slew of new material and cherished signature numbers, all backed by an overwhelmingly impressive stage production. But at it’s core, the performance is about a band doing their own thing, in close proximity to where it all began.

“We get to do this. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve played, you can’t deserve this,” Rinehart says. “Yes, you can put in a ton of work. But other people do, too, and it doesn’t work out. You’re not in control of your own destiny, you’re just really fortunate, and I think we approach everything like that right now.”

NeedToBreathe Give Taylor Swift Fans A Little 'Rock And Roll'

who did needtobreathe tour with

As [artist id="2389485"]Taylor Swift[/artist]'s super successful Speak Now Tour makes its way across North America this summer, her "rock-and-dance-a-billy" opening act [artist id="2098139"]NeedToBreathe[/artist] took a moment out of their grueling schedule to tell MTV News all about life on the road with one of today's biggest stars.

"We've been a band for almost 11 years," lead singer Bear Rinehart said. "It's been little steps along the way, you know? Playing in our hometown for the first time at a club that we loved, and then getting signed by Atlantic Records, and then [article id="1667769"]Taylor called and wanted us to tour[/article] with her 'cause she's a fan."

During the four-man band's first soundcheck of the tour, the guys were surprised to discover just how much of a NeedToBreathe fan Taylor is. "[It was] her and her family sitting out in the crowd, like, singing along to every word of the songs that we're doing in the soundcheck," drummer Joe Stillwell recalled. "It's a little surreal to kind of see that from somebody that you see on such a big scale all the time."

While South Carolina's NeedToBreathe have been on the music scene for a while now, the Speak Now tour has been an experience unlike any other for the group.

"We haven't played in venues this big, so that's been a little bit to get used to," Bear noted. "The first night you walk out there and there's 20,000 people, it's like, 'Whoa, this is pretty intense!' "

"Her fans, for the most part, are younger than our fanbase," said lead guitarist Bo Rinehart (Bear's brother).

"Some of these people, it's the first rock and roll show they've ever been to," Bear said with a laugh about Taylor's hard-core fans. "Sometimes we'll see the mom wearing a NeedToBreathe shirt and the kid wearing the Taylor Swift shirt!"

The band's fourth studio album, The Reckoning, hits stores in September.

"She may be the hardest-working, most consistent musician I’ve ever been around": Needtobreathe on what they learned from Taylor Swift

Needtobreathe singer Bear Rinehart on learning from Taylor Swift, navigating the 'Christian band' tag, and their ongoing quest to make 'big' music

Needtobreathe studio portrait

For 22 years Grammy-nominated South Carolinian rockers Needtobreathe have built a serious following with their singalong heartland rock and hard-touring work ethic.

They’ve regularly topped the US Rock, Alternative Rock and Christian Albums charts, and now opulently produced, anthem-heavy ninth album Caves is doing the business.

Below, singer Bear Rinehart talks ambition, the “Christian thing”, and lessons learned from Taylor Swift.

Alt

You’ve said Caves is an “ambitious album”. In what way?

These days in music, cheap is the new expensive – everything is deconstructing to nothing. But we love records that were big, where bands put everything in there, so we thought, what if we just went all the way and just made ourselves happy? Listening back to Caves it feels like that, feels big. We really went for it.

You’ve always had a catchy edge, and that has really been amped up on the new record.

Yeah, we’ve always wanted people to like the music. We built ourselves up as a live band, and didn’t want people looking at their shoes when they’re at our show. But this record’s less about the commercial success and more about allowing ourselves to do it. I always hear the song How Wonderful We Are and think Steven Tyler’s singing it, you know? We thought: “What if we just did this like Aerosmith?”

That track and Temporary Tears are both testimony to the band’s southern soul vibe .

That stuff just seeps in. We grew up in a very small town in South Carolina, my dad was a preacher in a diverse church with loud music, where I learned to play. The gospel thing with rock’n’roll elements added, that’s always been what’s turned me on. Early on my favourite band was The Black Crowes , and favourite singer was Joe Cocker . That ‘feverish’ thing is what we’re after.

The Christian angle must be tricky for a rock’n’roll band to navigate?

Yeah. The Christian thing’s been very commercialised, especially in America. We hate it when people say: “You’re a Christian band”, because sadly the term really just means you suck! But as for faith, that story’s playing out in my life all the time, with my kids and my wife, and the way we treat our people on the road. That’s incredibly valuable.

You supported Taylor Swift on a stadium tour twelve years ago. What did you learn from that?

We learned a lot about what we did and didn’t want. She may be the hardest-working, most consistent musician I’ve ever been around. We’re not the kind of band that’s gonna rehearse exactly what we’re gonna say in an empty arena, then say it that night. But she is, and that’s to her credit, because all those audience members get the best show every night from her. We’re a little more freewheeling.

You’re touring Caves . Which records end up on the tour bus or dressing room stereo?

Before every show we have a twenty-minute pre-game thing. Our piano player Josh [Lovelace] DJs, stuff like Skynyrd, Black Crowes, and any of the Kings – Freddie, BB, Albert. But we just listened to the latest Post Malone record, and when Beyoncé has a new one we’ll take it in together. We all love music still, which is such a blessing, because it’s not true with every band.

Caves is out now via Drive All Night.

NEEDTOBREATHE benefiting from Taylor Swift ‘master class’ in touring production

After touring with Taylor Swift years ago, the South Carolina rock band brings its “Caves” world tour to Van Andel Arena on Tuesday. The Local Spins interview.

Seth Bolt of NEEDTOBREATHE admits his pop-rock band learned a lot on the road with Taylor Swift.

“Touring with her was inspiring. It was the biggest production we’d ever seen,” recalled Bolt. “It was sort of a master class on touring and performing, and we got a front-row seat on how to tour on that level.”

NEEDTOBREATHE was a surprise selection to open for Swift on her 2011 arena tour, which featured a stop at Van Andel Arena. Band members have used the experience in crafting their own arena tour, which hits that same venue on Tuesday (Nov. 7).

Tickets — $29.95-$69.95 — for the 7 p.m. show are available at Tickemaster.com.

“We have lots of moving parts we’re putting together,” Bolt noted of the band led by singer-songwriter Bear Rinehart. “It’s certainly new territory for us, but we can’t wait for our fans to see it.”

Bolt was a childhood friend of brothers Bear and Bo Rineheart in rural South Carolina, sons of a pastor. “Their mom gave me piano lessons,” he recalled.

Adding other members along the way, they played music together for 20 years, even through periods of strained relationship between the brothers.

A break finally came when Bo left the band in spring of 2020, just as the pandemic hit. Suddenly the future was unknown.

“We wanted to make it work, and did everything we could, but it was, like… it wasn’t meant to be,” Bolt said of the brothers’ going separate ways. “Then everyone was under the weight of this massive force (COVID), that none of us could control. It was an existential situation for the band.”

They had some songs ready for an album that autumn (“Out of Body”), but that same season the players held up in an old house for a three-week, live-in writing and recording session from which came their 2021 release, “Into the Mystery.”

Guitarist Tyler Burkum stepped in to replace Bo and they were back to a quintet. (Bo Rinehart has since released new music under the moniker “Coy Roy”).

“This band has always been marked by a spirit of determination that really stems from Bear,” Bolt added. “His talent and the way he leads….this guy was not gonna quit and I wanted to be on his team.”

NEW MUSIC: TOURING BEHIND ‘CAVES’

That continued spirit led to “Caves,” their brand new album upon which the new tour is based. This time the band spent a full two years on the writing and recording process, wanting do the best version of each song they could.

“We decided to leave no stone unturned flexing the new capabilities the band has,” Bolt said.

It’s a collection still infused with their southern rock heritage, as displayed on the title track. But there are also several inspirational ballads, such as “Fall on Me,” one of Bolt’s favorites.

“For me that’s a reassuring song to people you love that – even on your worst days – there’s someone you can rely on.”

who did needtobreathe tour with

The New Album: ‘Caves’

Rinehart co-wrote the song with pastor-songwriter Steve Furtick of Elevation Church in North Carolina, and longtime Christian music songwriter/producer Jason Ingram.

Bolt points out it’s not a church/worship song, but rather a statement picturing unconditional love which resonates with Bolt and his wife after the recent arrival of their newborn daughter.

“Dreams,” co-written with Judah Akers of touring partners Judah & The Lion, is another personal highlight.

Bolt says the band plans to showcase all three of the new songs on the tour.

With its loyal fan base, NEEDTOBREATHE has retained listeners while putting itself in front of new ones. Last year they toured with OneRepublic, but also did a solo “acoustic” tour which brought a sold-out crowd to Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids in 2022 .

The year after their tour with Taylor Swift, they were a headliner at the Unity Christian Music Festival in Muskegon.

Now they’re coming out of the “caves” of the last few years, stretching into a expansive and even fuller sound.

“Here we are after 20 years and still going,” Bolt beamed. “It’s rare for a band to exist this long. “I’m just thrilled to continue to see day after day what else we can do.”

Jordan Davis, NEEDTOBREATHE hit the stage in Austin for 'CMT Crossroads'

who did needtobreathe tour with

On Friday night, the UT Tower's plaza was chock-full of Austinites in cowboy hats and boots, ready for a one-of-a-kind collaboration performance from Jordan Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE.

Country singer Davis and rock band NEEDTOBREATHE hit the stage together at UT Austin's campus for a live taping of the show "CMT Crossroads," the network's longest-running music series. For the show, two artists from different genres come together on stage to perform each other’s hits.

The "Crossroads" taping comes before another anticipated live performance from Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE at Sunday's CMT Awards.

The awards show, which will be broadcasted live on CBS , airing live from Austin's Moody Center and is hosted by Kelsea Ballerini .

Building up excitement for the CMT Awards, Jordan Davis—known for songs "Buy Dirt" and "Next Thing You Know"—sang with NEEDTOBREATHE's frontman Bear Rinehart, tossing vocals back and forth between one another or singing in harmony.

NEEDTOBREATHE, comprised of Rinehart, Seth Bolt, Josh Lovelace, Randall Harris and Tyler Burkum, released album "Caves" in 2023 and are known for hits "Who Am I," "Banks" and "Multiplied."

And while the two artists have entirely different sounds, tonight, Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE sounded like they could have been playing together for decades.

Jordan Davis, NEEDTOBREATHE say their collab's 'been like band camp'

Davis’s country grit and Rinehart’s gravelly rock 'n' roll vocals blended together in harmonies that hit the perfect mix of country and rock. There were both mandolin solos and electric guitar riffs, bluesy harmonica and thumping drums.

"I know Bear’s voice is cooler than mine," Davis joked to the crowd during the show. But Davis and Rinehart shared the spotlight well.

"I've been looking forward to doing 'Crossroads' for a long time, so I'm glad it's with NEEDTOBREATHE," Davis told the USA Today Network.

"I've been aware of Jordan, I know his music, but I'd never met him, which is kinda crazy," said Rinehart. Both Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE made the trek from their home city Nashville to Austin for the weekend.

"It's just been like band camp, here," Rinehart added. "It's been just fun—which is the way a collaboration should be."

Davis agreed. "Ending (the weekend) on the awards night, us getting to play another song, it's a cool way to cap off a fun weekend," he said.

Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE's "Crossroads" collaboration included Davis's songs "Next Thing You know," "Tucson Too Late" and "Buy Dirt."

For Davis's sweet tune "What My World Spins Around," Davis and Rinehart's powerful, gravelly voices blended together as red lights poured over the crowd and Seth Bolt shook the tambourine.

They sang, "But girl, that don't even come close / To the way that it feels when you lean in and kiss me / The way that you dance when you get kinda tipsy."

NEEDTOBREATHE's featured songs were "Banks," "Wasting Time," "West Texas Wind," and "The Outsiders," which featured thumping drums, lively harmonica and a call from Rinehart to get "as loud as we gon' get!"

The night's encore—one of the evening's top moments—was a cover of Tom Petty's 1994 song "You Wreck Me," which both Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE have covered in the past. Both acts laid it all out on the line for their final number.

A fitting way to top off the night, the "Crossroads" ended on a heartland rock note.

Together, Davis and Rinehart sang the classic: "Oh yeah! / You wreck me baby! / Yeah, you break me in two / But you move me honey! / Yes, you do!"

UT Campus sharing in CMT Awards excitement

Throughout the evening, lights flashed on the UT Tower's Main Building and illuminated the tower a bright orange as spotlights raced around, cameras filmed the action for CMT and a drone flew overhead.

Any other time of year, this isn't a typical day at UT Austin. But as it turns out, just earlier this week another full CMT production came to campus.

On Wednesday, Kelsea Ballerini, Bailey Zimmerman, Old Dominion and Megan Moroney performed at UT Austin ahead of the awards ceremony to an audience of UT students and locals.

"It's honestly so incredible," said UT Austin sophomore Coco Kennedy. "This never happens anywhere else, and we, as students, get to experience it for free and it's an incredible experience we get to take with us forever."

"Austin's truly living up to its name," said Logan Dubel, a sophomore at UT who is also a student journalist at Texas Student Television. "To be able to not only see these artists but interview all these fans who are having a blast in the live music capital of the world...

"It's just an incredible experience for us, as students, to get to have."

Needtobreathe's Bear Rinehart Talks Opening for Taylor Swift, Being Named After Bear Bryant

Your band's music is much rougher around the edges than Taylor Swift's. Are you worried about being too edgy for her audience? Actually, it's come off really well. It's been kind of a shock to us because a lot of her fans are very young. We've always believed that good music translates to everybody. I think we took that from Elvis and The Beatles. We feel that if we play our music well and be true to ourselves, it will translate to any audience. I think we have been seeing that on this tour. The response has been really good. Taylor has a lot of country fans and a lot of pop fans. The age range is amazing. I think she makes good music, and obviously people respond to it and relate to it. We've seen some of the same thing, even though we are obviously not a country band. We're a little bit different of a choice to tour with Taylor, but I think that's a tribute to her. She does what she wants. She has a vision for this tour and she is a fan of our band. I think she's been proven right in that the entire show has a lot of variety to it. Were you really handpicked by Swift? How does that work? Do you just get a phone call? Yes, we did get a call. We were in the midst of a headlining tour, and it was out of the blue. It wasn't something we even knew was happening. We were not pitching ourselves for it. Of course, it didn't take us long to make that decision. She said she liked the band a lot and wanted us to think about doing a tour. And they have been really good to us. It's not like we're playing to the audience with the lights on or with the sound down. They've let us do our show. And that makes a huge difference. Is it intimidating to play these huge stadiums? I thought it was going to be a lot more intimidating. We are from a small town and we have been doing this for about 12 years now. I feel like we were fairly prepared for it. The first 15 minutes of the first show, I think we were a little nervous about being in an arena. Since then, we have gotten into the swing of it. Connecting with an audience that size is definitely a different art form, much different from a club or a theater. We took it as a challenge and we've been enjoying it. We've been living it up. Playing Cowboys Stadium is a ridiculous opportunity. Being sports fans like we are, it's huge. I can't wait to get in there and throw a football around. We're like 8-year-olds when it comes to that stuff. We're going to take the tour. We've played Dallas a ton of times, but getting to play in front of that many people is going to be a good night. In your song "Ohhs and Ahhs," you sing, "Take me back to a simpler time." Exactly when is that? I think the entire new album [ The Reckoning ] is about the fans kind of looking back on our career. This is our fourth record, and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We knew there would be a lot of attention on it. Our last record, The Outsider , was successful in our eyes. It sold almost 300,000 copies. For the first time in the band's career, instead of trying to prove to people that we are good enough, all of a sudden people had expectations for this new one. We wanted to make sure that we stayed grounded in who we are. We didn't want to get caught up in the mess that the music business can be. You say that you don't play country music. How would you describe what you do? We call it rock and dancabilly. We say rock 'n' roll. Music from the south has those rootsy elements like banjo and harmonica. We have that connection with country music. You can't say southern rock because people think you're talking about Skynyrd. What we do is a new southern rock, a lot of real music and real singing. "White Fences" is a particularly rootsy cut. It is old-school. It is a weird take on that sound. I guess the idea is of life not panning out exactly how you thought and how you are going to deal with that. There's some mandolin on that track. We made the drums really big. We like the idea of this record being as big as possible. This is the way people used to make records, folks like Tom Petty and Springsteen. That's when the music industry was in a great place and nobody told you no. We set ourselves up to make a record like that.

Your brother is also in the band. Do you ever look up and say, "Not him again." I'd say about every 20 minutes. [Laughs.] I'm just kidding. We fight a lot, but I think that makes the band better. It's brought a very competitive nature to the band. When he writes a song, I try to write a better one. The other two guys in the band we've known since we were kids. The beauty of it is, tomorrow, we are not going to break up. I think we really do love each other. The band thing for us is much more than a job. I think we are really proud of that and you can see it when we play. Many of your songs have appeared on the Christian music charts. Is there a stigma attached to being considered a Christian act? I think to be labeled anything is bad. We've rebelled against that in the past. We've never felt comfortable in any particular music scene. It's like when Tom Petty was asked how it felt to be a new wave artist. He didn't even know what new wave was. That genre stuff is all about the business part and not about the music part. We want to be free to make whatever statements we want to make. We want to be able to do almost anything and have the type of fans who will go there with us.

You were named after the famous Alabama football coach Bear Bryant. Those are pretty big shoes to fill. Those are huge shoes! We are all big football fans, huge sports fans. Bear Bryant is larger than life in Alabama. Football is a big part of our lives. We can't do anything else on Saturdays.

Why not use any spaces in the band's name? It just looked cooler on a t-shirt.

Needtobreathe opens for Taylor Swift on Saturday, October 8, at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

CAVES

Review – NEEDTOBREATHE – CAVES

I’ve put this off for far too long. I’ve been living with CAVES , NEEDTOBREATHE’s new album, for a while now, so I guess it’s time I write a few words about it. I’ll preface this review by saying I love NEEDTOBREATHE. I think they have been one of the most consistent bands in or out of the Christian music world. They have a handful of legitimately great albums , and the rest of their discography is incredibly solid.

When you read that, perhaps it sounds like there is an unwritten “but” waiting to rear its head. If that is the vibe you were picking up, you were right on target. CAVES is an album I have been struggling with since it was released on September 15th. I’m not sure what to do with it. I like all 11 songs on the album. I love quite a few of them. Honestly, I don’t think any song is bad. So why am I not connecting to it as much as I have to their previous albums? I have no idea.

Maybe that’s a good reason to not write a review. I don’t know. I would rather do my processing out in the open and you, dear readers, get to live inside my head for a bit.

CAVES – the review

CAVES opens with one of the better rockers the band has created in a number of years. I love everything about “The Cave” – the tempo, the sense of danger just around the next note, and most importantly, the blistering guitar work by Tyler Burkum. I can’t wait to have my face melted off when I hear this one in person. So…great start to the album. A throwback to a more aggressive and edgy NEEDTOBREATHE. I can dig it.

Then the band hits the brakes with “Everknown”. That’s not a knock on the song – it’s beautiful. Independent of the album, I enjoy it every time I hear it. It just feels jarring to go from the rough and rowdy, pulse-pounding, rock-you-like-a-hurricane opener to a Top 40, radio-ready, meticulously crafted in-the-studio, pop song. Again, the song is good with lovely production, beautiful vocals, and an expansive sound. It’s just that we’re two songs into the album and I have zero clue what the connective tissue for this album is. What’s the thematic throughline or the musical vision that inspired this particular collection of songs?

The third track is where I really get lost with the album. “How Wonderful We Are” is my least favorite track on CAVES and it definitely hurts the flow and effectiveness of the album as a whole. It’s not a bad song, and the general concept works, but this feels like a deep cut, later in-the-album sort of song. Not a song you want to feature in the first handful of tracks. (With that said, I’ve seen them do this song live in studio during a radio interview, and the stripped-down version is dramatically better than what we get on the album.)

The album picks up quite a bit starting with track number four – “Dreams” featuring Judah and the Lion. It’s an earnest, heart-on-their-sleeve anthem and I’m all the way here for it. More cynical listeners might write it off as cheesy pandering, but I hear sincerity and honesty in this giant “Thank You!” to the fans. Plus, the song has a great hook, a giant chorus, and pounding drums to round out the awesomeness.

The good times just keep rolling with “When You Forgive Someone”. While the lyrics are pretty simple, the message is great, and the melody is one of the strongest on the album. The guitar work during the verses is especially fun.

Unfortunately, the album falters a little with the sixth track, “Wasting Time”. It’s not a total loss, though. The verses work really well, with a punchy rhythm and some fun vocal work. The chorus changes gears pretty dramatically, and not for the better. I don’t hate any part of this song; I just think it has glimmers of a much better song. I do want to add that I imagine this song will work wonderfully in concert. I could see the band really having a ton of fun playing this one and giving it the right amount of energy it needs. Also, the horns and guitar work are stellar on this.

From this point on, CAVES is one great song after another starting with “Fall on Me” featuring guest vocalist, Carly Pearce. This is about as lovely of a song as NEEDTOBREATHE has ever performed. Gentle piano, swelling accompaniment, and a beautiful blending of the vocals make this song a standout for sure. I can see this song dominating the graduation and wedding playlists for the next few years. And I mean that as a compliment.

“Hideaway” is up next, and it doesn’t disappoint at all. The opening of the song, particularly when Seth Bolt comes in with the bass line, is just perfect. Bear Rineheart delicately sings the verses, transitioning to a more robust vocal performance for the choruses. He even throws in a little falsetto just for the fun of it. Musically, it’s another mostly subdued number, and that’s just fine because they nail it perfectly. There are little flourishes of beauty throughout this song, from the incredible background vocals to the mandolin solo. It’s definitely a high point.

The following track, “By and By” is a throwback, rockabilly, foot stomper. It would feel at home in a sweaty bar or an old time, charismatic church. It’s fun and I have no doubt this song will absolutely kill in concert.

Probably the most analyzed lyrics on the album are found in the next song, “Reaching Out to Find You”. Regardless if the song is about what many NEEDTOBREATHE fans seem to think it’s about, it’s a beautiful and emotional call for forgiveness and grace. Musically, it’s layers of chiming guitars, lovely piano and keys by Josh Lovelace, and echoing drums by Randall Harris.

“Temporary Tears”, the closing track is a fantastic end to the album. Guest vocalist Foy Vance adds a great sound and a ton of emotion. Again, the guitar work is a standout. A choir joins in after the second verse and it’s the exact right sound for this song. This is probably the mellowest song on CAVES , but it probably packs more emotion than much of the rest of the album. The final refrain of the song is hopeful, honest, and brimming with heart,

Final Thoughts about CAVES

Maybe my reaction to this album is making more sense after reading my thoughts about each song. Eleven tracks and I like or love nearly all of them. Yet, I don’t love the album. I know. It makes no sense to me either. I thought that maybe if I gave it more time, it would eventually click for me and I would fall in love with it completely. Maybe that will still happen for me. I hope so. As of right now, CAVES is an album I like full of songs I love.

Perhaps my reaction is because the first track, ostensibly the title track, promises something the rest of the album has no interest in delivering. Instead, the band has shifted into a more introspective, subdued mode. They are not young men in their 20’s anymore. They are middle-aged husbands and fathers. I can’t fault them for evolving and transitioning. They are no longer trying to prove themselves to anyone. No chips on their shoulders. That’s a great place to be, emotionally speaking. I’m just not sure if it’s the perfect environment to create the best possible art.

Or maybe I’m just lost in my own cave and am missing the key ingredient that makes CAVES truly special. Let me know in the comments or on our social media pages. If you love CAVES , tell me what I’m missing. I’m going to keep listening. I can promise that. NEEDTOBREATHE has earned that much. Thanks for reading!

Good job doing the review, and it will hopefully help others process the songs individually, and the project collectively.

I think Phill’s review hits the nail on the head, at least for me it did. Caves is a head scratcher. I couldn’t help feeling the same way as Phill when I listened to Caves for the first time. Fantastic songs, each with their own identity, I just don’t love it as an album. There’s a different feeling when I listen to The Reckoning, the songs gel and there is a completeness about the album. Needtobreathe is my favorite band to see live, there’s never been a better concert experience, and I’ve been to many

Thanks for the comment, Jared. Maybe it will grow on us.

And yes, they are an amazing live band. I’m sure the songs from this album are going to be great in concert.

' src=

Agree on the general premise. NTB is probably my favorite band of all time. Love all the songs, don’t love the album. I think “When You Forgive Someone” is probably my least favorite. It’s just boring to me. But I do love most of the songs. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head that they just don’t work together for some reason. Excited about the concert in November, though, and introducing my brother in law to it! I can’t wait for him to love them as much as I do.

I really like “When You Forgive Someone”. Enjoy the concert. Your brother-in-law better enjoy it as well!

CAVES feels like someone made a playlist of 11 of their favorite NEEDTOBREATHE songs. I don’t see any cohesion to it at all. Typically when you pick a random song from an album, you can kinda feel where it belongs in reference to the other songs. I’ve listened through CAVES several times, and I still have no idea where any song falls.

That being said, I like most of the songs. Hideaway is easily my favorite. I’m gonna disagree on How Wonderful We Are. The background vocals are incredibly unique and its got some awesome guitar riffs. When You Forgive Someone is my least favorite. The lyrics are just too simple and repetitive for me to enjoy.

This album stylistically feels the most mainstream out of anything they’ve done. Not necessarily a good or bad thing, just a comment. All that being said, here’s my ranking of the album…

1. Hideaway 2. The Cave 3. Reaching Out to Find You 4. How Wonderful We Are 5. Fall On Me 6. Temporary Tears 7. Everknown 8. Dreams 9. By and By 10. Wasting Time 11. When You Forgive Someone

Watch NEEDTOBREATHE's 'Into the Mystery' Music Video from New Album — Recorded While in Quarantine

NEEDTOBREATHE recorded their eighth studio album while they were "quarantined in a house in the middle of nowhere for three weeks" in Tennessee, they tell PEOPLE

After an unprecedented 2020, NEEDTOBREATHE is now taking fans Into the Mystery .

On Thursday, the band revealed the title track/lead single — "Into the Mystery" — for their forthcoming album of the same name, which was recorded in just three weeks while they all quarantined together in a Tennessee house last September amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're so excited to be starting this new chapter for Into The Mystery — our 8th studio album," the band, comprised of Bear Rinehart (vocals, guitar), Seth Bolt (bass, vocals), Josh Lovelace (keys, vocals), Randall Harris (drums) and Tyler Burkum (guitar), tells PEOPLE.

"The music video gives just a small glimpse into our crazy plan to make an album — during COVID — quarantined in a house in the middle of nowhere for three weeks. We have a bunch of surprises in store for our fans for later this year … but for now we hope people enjoy this small glimpse of 'Into The Mystery,'" the band adds.

The music video, shared exclusively by PEOPLE, was filmed at the historic house-turned-recording studio that the bandmates rented for nearly a month and features a series of Polaroids that the musicians took throughout the process of recording the album.

Just weeks after releasing Out of Body (the 2020 album's tour was canceled due to COVID), NEEDTOBREATHE quietly retreated to the house and began working on songs that frontman Rinehart wrote during the global pandemic.

Into The Mystery is due out later this year on Elektra Records.

Are you ready for it?

Ahead of her concert later this year in Indy, Taylor Swift released her highly-anticipated eleventh studio album "The Tortured Poets Department" on Friday.

Still no word on "Reputation (Taylor's Version)" though (sorry, Swifties).

Here's what we know about her new album.

When does 'The Tortured Poets Department' release?

Swift's newest album, "The Tortured Poets Department" dropped at midnight on April 19. Then at 2 a.m. she released a deluxe version of the album, "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology."

How manys songs are in 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

The original album consists of 16 songs, with four additional bonus tracks that were advertised as only available on certain vinyls or CDs. Each vinyl or CD variant includes a different one of the bonus tracks.

Making bonus tracks only available on physical copies and releasing them on streaming later is becoming a more common practice.

Swift did this with her previous album "Midnights" where the bonus track "You're Losing Me" was only available on a few CDs sold at live shows. Olivia Rodrigo recently released a deluxe version of her sophomore album "Guts," which includes all four of the bonus tracks that were originally only available on certain vinyl pressings, plus one new song.

Swift moved much quicker than that for this album.

By releasing the deluxe version of the album on streaming at 2 a.m., only two hours after the original dropped, 15 extra tracks, including the bonus tracks only on vinyl and cd, became available to stream.

So now all bonus tracks for this album are available on streaming, but not all the deluxe songs have physical copies (that we know of, yet).

When did Taylor Swift announce 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

At the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4, while accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for her previous album "Midnights," Swift announced her next project, another album titled "The Tortured Poets Department."

She has been teasing fans with track titles, lyrics, videos , Apple Music playlists , and even a pop-up art installation in Los Angeles with Spotify leading up to the release.

Will 'The Tortured Poets Department' be in the Eras Tour?

It is still unsure whether or not the remaining shows on her current tour, the Eras Tour, will be updated to include songs from her newest album.

She begins the European leg of her tour on May 9 in Paris, France, making it the first concert date after the release of "The Tortured Poets Department." Fans will have to wait and see if the album gets a more permanent spot in the show's setlist beyond being played during the surprise song segment.

When is Taylor Swift coming to Indy?

Taylor Swift announced in August she is bringing her "Eras Tour" to Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium for three nights, Nov. 1, 2 and 3.

How to get Taylor Swift tickets for Indianapolis?

You may still have a chance to see the Eras Tour in November.

Ticket sales through Ticketmaster are officially over, however, several marked-up tickets are still available for the Indianapolis shows on re-selling sites like StubHub and SeatGeek .

If you're still hoping to get tickets, they may be costly. Most tickets are priced are anywhere from $1,500 to almost $3,000 each, and the cheapest tickets are for seats near the top of the bowl.

Taylor Moore (+6600) … When a guy keeps fulfilling targets as he did for a Top 5 at +900 for the Texas Children’s Houston Open (T2) and again for a Top 20 at +400 at the Masters (T20), both after an impressive T12 in his first-ever title defense at the Valspar Championship, is he really a Sleeper anymore? Better yet, because he keeps fulfilling the targets, there’s a progression that what the work is yielding must be piggybacked. So, here he is yet again, but this time to win. He debuted at the RBC Heritage last year with a T11 and he’s among the best on approach on the PGA TOUR this year. He’s also guaranteed a 16th consecutive payday, so he’s been in a groove for far longer than the recent surge.

Tommy Fleetwood (+333) … In full disclosure, the Brit was supposed to be in the Power Rankings. I simply glossed over my handwritten note that he was one of the 15 to include. My shortlist was at 19 but I wound up including one of the four that I had cut. That’s OK because, while continuity over time is important for that weekly preview, 15 still is an arbitrary target. So, perhaps that’ll be a happy accident that’ll follow the purposeful likes of Will Zalatoris at The Genesis Invitational (+650), Taylor Moore at the Texas Children’s (+900) and Collin Morikawa (+750) as golfers who have converted on this bet in Sleepers in 2024. Now, Fleetwood is but sixth-shortest for the same at the RBC Heritage, but part of that is a product of the fact that there are only 69 golfers in play. The rest is all him. He’s 3-for-4 at Harbour Town with a personal-best T10 in 2022, and he’s on the bounce of a T7-T3 the last two weeks. Also, he was a winner earlier this year at the Dubai Invitational.

Tommy Fleetwood finishes with birdie on No. 18 at Valero

Thomas Detry (+650) … While he’s rested since a co-runner-up at the Texas Children’s three weeks ago – his second top-four finish and fourth top 20 of his last eight, including a T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where greens are similarly as small as Harbour Town’s – this is just as much about the overall fit for the track. En route to missing the cut in his debut last year, the course beat him up during his opening, 3-over 74, but among those who slammed trunks – well, gently lowered the liftgate via the key fob – no one scored lower than his 3-under 68 that followed. Proving that his game improves nearest the hole, he led the field at Memorial Park in scrambling.

Tom Hoge (+200) … Focusing only on the golfers for whom the kickback is at least twice the outlay, the available subset is thin in a small field, but it was a bona fide surprise to find him in it. He’s cashed only twice in six appearances, but that he continues to return is proof that he’s fond of Harbour Town. With the guarantee of four rounds for the first time this week, whatever demons he fights about the place won’t be a factor as it concerns contributing to the season-long cause, but his form in 2024 has been strong enough to bury the demons for good, anyway. He arrives with a consecutive cuts-made streak of nine that includes two top 10s and another four top 20s. Also, inside the top 20 on TOUR in greens hit and adjusted scoring, and he’s No. 1 in proximity to the hole and par-3 scoring.

Adam Svensson (+200) … With no cut and only 69 commits, BetMGM split the difference between a customary market for a Top 40 and presented this. And in a similar vein as the Top 20 market, the objective is to focus on the options that would double the return on investment. Among the dozen or so options is the Canadian in his third start, the first of which resulted in a T26 in a full field in 2022. He’s struggled of late but his skill set as a tee-to-green performer plays up at Harbour Town, so it’s not surprising that his scoring average in eight rounds on the par 71 is 69.38.
