For good: Interlochen alumni reflect on the 20th anniversary of ‘Wicked’
From Carla Stickler as Elphaba to Jaime Rosenstein as Nessarose, former Broadway and national tour cast members share their memories of the Tony Award-winning musical.
L-R: Jaime Rosenstein, Carla Stickler, and Sheila Karls. Photos of Rosenstein and Stickler by Joan Marcus.
In October 2003, audiences at the Gershwin Theatre in New York City heard Stephen Schwartz’s now-iconic lyrics to “For Good” for the very first time:
“Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But, because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”
Just as its two heroines were forever shaped by their unlikely friendship, Wicked has left an indelible mark on both Broadway and on audiences around the world. The musical has shattered box office records, earned three Tony Awards, captured the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Show Album, inspired a forthcoming film adaptation, and captivated legions of devoted fans. Two decades after its opening night on Oct. 30, 2003, the “cultural phenomenon” ( Variety ) has been seen by more than 30 million people worldwide and surpassed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats as the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.
Beyond its monumental cultural impact, Wicked has also given hundreds of theatre performers, technicians, and pit orchestra musicians a chance to fly—including more than a dozen Interlochen Arts Camp and Arts Academy alumni.
As Wicked enters its third decade as one of theatre’s most coveted tickets, we sat down with a few of the Interlochen alumni who have appeared in the show’s Broadway or national tour productions. Below, they share their favorite memories and why they think Wicked continues to resonate with audiences two decades later.
Jaime Rosenstein - Nessarose, National Tour, 2013-14
Jaime Rosenstein as Nessarose. Photo by Joan Marcus.
For the most part, Jaime Rosenstein’s (IAC 04) tenure as Nessarose on the national tour of Wicked was a dream come true. But there’s one moment that haunts her.
“One time, I managed to fall out of the wheelchair during ‘Dancing Through Life’,” Rosenstein recalls. “Don't ask me how that happened—I still don't really know. It has given me nightmares.”
The fall wasn’t Rosenstein’s only mishap with Nessarose’s wheelchair.
“In the first act, Nessa's chair spins out of control, and that's when we realize Elphaba's powers,” Rosenstein explains. “I'm supposed to click a latch on my chair that gives the operators control of the chair to make it spin around, but for some reason when I clicked the latch, it froze. I just sat there while the chair was supposed to be spinning. I have never seen a more stunned group of cast members trying to hold back laughter while I waved my arms around and screamed my head off to make it seem like something was happening to me.”
While these two misadventures were perhaps the most memorable moments, Rosenstein’s favorite part of touring with Wicked was bringing joy to the production’s fans.
“I just loved seeing all of the little girls in the audience—some of them even dressed up in costumes—rush to their feet as the show finished,” she says. “For two and a half hours, they could put aside a bad grade on a math test or the mean kids at school and just immerse themselves in the magical world of Wicked . To be able to give anyone that escape is an incredible gift, and I feel so fortunate to have been a part of this show.”
Beyond its enchanted setting, Rosenstein believes Wicked has endured as a result of two powerful themes: friendship and feminism.
“I think Wicked continues to resonate with audiences because it tells the story of true friendship, and that is a theme that will always remain present in audiences’ hearts,” she says. “Over the course of the story, we see these two women change and grow together and just as they evolve as people, so does their friendship.”
“Glinda and Elphaba fight for what is right—they fight to be heard by authority that wants to hold them back,” Rosenstein continues. “As women all over the world continue to fight for their power and for their autonomy today, we need to see strong examples of this on stage and screen.”
Carla Stickler - Elphaba understudy, Broadway and National Tour
Carla Stickler as Elphaba. Photo by Joan Marcus.
In January 2022, software engineer Carla Stickler (IAC 97-00, IAA 00-01) made national headlines when she was called up to play Elphaba on Broadway—nearly seven years after she’d last played the role.
“To say it was an incredible moment would be an understatement,” Stickler wrote in an Instagram post after the performance. “I’m so overjoyed to have performed with this amazing cast and crew.”
Stickler herself was once a full-time member of the Wicked cast: She served as the standby for Elphaba on the national tour for three years before joining the Broadway cast as the understudy for Elphaba in 2013. In 2015, burned out and concerned about her body’s ability to sustain a long-term musical theatre career, Stickler hung up her black hat and broomstick.
“There is this pressure,” Stickler said in a 2022 interview with Crescendo . “You have this little Elphaba on your shoulder, and you never know when you’re going to have to perform one of the hardest roles on Broadway.”
Although Stickler pivoted to a full-time career in technology, she remained on call as an emergency cover for Wicked . Over the next six years, Stickler was called up many times—although always as a member of the ensemble. Then, on Jan. 1, 2022, Stickler returned to the stage of Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre as Elphaba.
While the performance was a memorable moment for Stickler, she was surprised by the media’s interest in her return to the spotlight.
“As an understudy, I’ve never gotten this kind of attention,” she told Crescendo . “Your job is to make sure the show goes on and there isn’t a big fuss about it.”
The New Year’s Day performance was also a chance for Stickler to find closure and reflect on her experience as part of Wicked .
“Every time I’ve been able to step away and then pop back into this show, having had space to breathe and process, I’ve been able to fully grasp the beauty and magic of getting to be a part of something so magical,” Stickler wrote in her Instagram post. “If I never performed again, I could rest easy knowing that something out-of-this-world happened last night.”
Sheila Karls - ShenShen and Madame Morrible understudy, First National Tour, 2013-15
Sheila Karls in costume as Madame Morrible.
Sheila Karls’ (IAC 02, IAA 02-04) experience as a member of Wicked’s first national tour had its share of highs and lows–both literally and figuratively.
“There are so many special memories: from holding curtain and hunkering down in the basement–in costume–because of a sudden tornado in Omaha, Nebraska to breathing from a tiny offstage oxygen machine while dancing at Colorado altitudes,” Karls recalls.
Like Rosenstein, Karls's favorite memories include participating in hilarious, quick-thinking improvisations when technical difficulties arose.
“When the hydraulic lift that propels Elphaba malfunctioned, we did what was loosely known as ‘Plan B’: If Elphaba doesn’t rise, everyone else has to make it look like she does,” Karls says. “‘Plan B’ was either to hit the ground or crouch way down, giving the illusion that Elphaba is soaring above us as we sang to her.”
“You’d never know when to expect it, but when it happened, it was the fastest transition your brain ever had to make. We all suddenly attempted to maintain the illusion for the audience, belting out our respective notes while belly-flopping on the floor and trying to keep from laughing at how ridiculous some of our costumes must look horizontally. But the show must go on!”
There were difficult moments too, when words of “For Good” offered as much catharsis for the performers as they did for the audience.
“A forever emblazoned, bittersweet memory was when we learned at the half-hour pre-show call that one of our very dear castmates had finally lost her battle with cancer,” Karls says. “I have no doubt that it was the most difficult performance of any of our lives, but we did it for her, with conviction, through veiled tears, through lyrics imbued with particularly special meaning that day: ‘Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.’ Our company held a framed picture of her, giving her the final bow thereafter until our tour closed.”
Karls believes that raw emotion–woven into the book and lyrics and brought to life by dedicated casts and crews–is the reason Wicked has become one of the most popular musicals of all time.
“The show’s got heart,” Karls said. “Its universally relatable themes–wanting to belong, perseverance amidst hate, and ultimately, self-acceptance and self-love–resonate with the incredibly personal, human part in all of us.”
“Experiencing the iconic moment when Elphaba finally takes flight is, I think, one of the most exhilarating moments in musical theatre,” she continues. “It’s when resilience meets a new willingness. It’s when empowerment literally rises above all other voices into the unknown ‘western sky.’ Of course, the wildly unique choreography, score, and beautifully elaborate costumes further drive these points home.”
“It’s truly a creative spectacle that asks the questions our souls want us to ask.”

‘Wicked’ set to relaunch touring market for Broadway shows

“Wicked” will be the first national tour to resume performances when it plays its first show in Dallas Tuesday.
The production was one of many tours that were paused due to the pandemic, and it kicks off the planned return of the U.S. touring market. The national tours of “Hamilton” are expected to resume later this month and tours of “ What the Constitution Means to Me,” “Hadestown” and more are expected to follow this fall.
“America has pent up demand for the Broadway series which normally take place in over 200 cities across the country, and to have it begin with an iconic show such as ‘Wicked’ is simply a marvelous beginning to what we know will be a great season across the USA,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League.
The return of “Wicked” on tour comes as “Pass Over” prepares to start performances on Broadway Wednesday. “Pass Over” will be the first Broadway play to begin performances after the March 12, 2020 Broadway shutdown.
Many more shows are scheduled to return starting in September, including the Broadway production of “Wicked” on Sept. 14.
The Broadway League and Actors’ Equity previously announced safety protocols for touring productions, which include a vaccination mandate for touring cast and crew members. Recent updates to the protocols allow for modifications to be made for specific cities or productions.
“Wicked” plans to play a one-month engagement at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas before moving on to cities including Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Appleton, Wis.; Cincinnati; Kansas City, Mo.; Costa Mesa, Cali.; Omaha, Neb. and Boston.
The Broadway Review: An amorphous ‘Uncle Vanya’ straddles different times and genres
The broadway review: ‘mary jane’ — a heart-shattering drama that puts care at its core, broadway attendance grows slightly as season’s end draws near, the broadway review: ‘the heart of rock and roll’ is a greatest-hits album of broadway clichés, the broadway review: ‘patriots’ is a bullish new play that doesn’t reach its epic ambitions, the broadway review: ‘cabaret’ a carnal, queer hotbed of thrills, the broadway review: ‘hell’s kitchen’ — a charming new musical told through bright eyes and big songs, the broadway review: ‘stereophonic’ is a strum of genius.

Wicked (1st North American National Tour)
Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz is currently the 10th longest running Broadway show of all time. Based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West , Wicked is set before we meet Dorothy in L. Frank Baum’s classic book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The musical gives audiences a glimpse into the unlikely bond between Glinda, the “Good” witch and Elphaba, “the wicked witch of the west.” Despite opposing backgrounds, personalities and viewpoints the two become best friends while at school. Their friendship is put to the test as they face corrupt government, romantic rivalries and their own ideas of what is “good.”
Winner of numerous Tony and Drama Desk Awards as well as a Grammy and multiple international awards and nominations, Wicked , has proven to be a worldwide sensation.
This First North American National Tour began in Toronto, Canada. Running for 10 years, it is one of the longest running Broadway musical tours in the United States.

Wicked to Become the First National Tour to Resume Performances When It Hits Dallas in August
Thank goodness! Dallas Summer Musicals and Broadway Across America have announced that Wicked will resume its national touring production this summer, becoming the first national tour to do so since the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered theaters . Wicked will play the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas from August 3 through September 5. The musical kicks off the 2021-2022 Germania Insurance Broadway Series presented by DSM. Tickets go on sale May 21.
"We couldn’t be more honored and thrilled to present Wicked , not just as a return engagement in Dallas, but also as the first Broadway show to resume performances in the U.S.,” said DSM president Ken Novice in a statement. “It’s a poignant moment for our industry, our organization, and audiences that we will always cherish, coming out of such a challenging year as this past one. Wicked shows us there’s no place like home—and we can’t think of a better way to welcome home our Broadway shows at the Music Hall than with this long-running, award-winning fan favorite!"
At the time of the shutdown, Wicked was led by Talia Suskauer as Elphaba, Allison Bailey as Glinda and Curt Hansen as Fiyero. Full casting will be announced soon.
To ensure the comfort and health of audiences, staff, cast and crew and prioritize their safety, Dallas Summer Musicals is working in consultation with local government and public health officials to open its doors and welcome patrons back to the theater. There will be increased safety protocols in the Music Hall at Fair Park, and it will adhere to governmental and other health expert guidance that will allow for reopening at full capacity. Masks will be required at all times when inside the venue.
Wicked imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reveals the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and featuring a book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked has a score by Stephen Schwartz. The musical is directed by Joe Mantello, choreographed by Wayne Cilento and music-directed by Stephen Oremus. Wicked features scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by Tony Meola and projection design by Elaine J. McCarthy.
DSM has presented the Best of Broadway to North Texas audiences since 1941. BAA is part of the John Gore Organization family of companies, which includes Broadway.com, and is the foremost presenter of first-class touring productions in North America, operating in 47 markets withover 400,000 subscribers.

About WICKED
SO MUCH HAPPENED BEFORE DOROTHY DROPPED IN
WICKED , the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”
From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED —the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. “If every musical had the brains, heart and courage of WICKED , Broadway really would be a magical place” ( Time Magazine ).

In the heart of Hollywood, on Hollywood Boulevard, right down the block from Vine Street, stands the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. It's a fitting location: The Pantages has become one of the greatest landmarks of Hollywood, signifying both the glorious past and adventuresome future of the world's entertainment capital.
The Hollywood Pantages has a history as grand and diverse as the stage and screen fare which audiences have flocked to enjoy there for half a century. These days it's one of Los Angeles' leading homes of legitimate theatre (the five highest-grossing weeks in L.A.'s theatrical history were all shows at the Pantages) and a favorite "location" for tv shows, movies and music videos. In the past, it has been a movie house, with live vaudeville acts between features as well as the site of many gala premieres and "spectaculars." For ten years the Hollywood Pantages Theatre was the home of the glittering Academy Awards Presentations.
While the use of the Hollywood Pantages Theatre may have changed over the years, the theatre does not appear all that different today. After several touch-ups over the years, the Hollywood Boulevard showplace was renovated at the turn of the 21st century to recapture its 1930 look and luxury. When the theatre reopened in September 2000, some 300 people had repainted nearly every inch of the theatre, restored its outer lobby and missing chandeliers, refurbished its walls and prepared it for the new century.

Review: Impressive Cast Brings Renewed Energy to Latest WICKED National Tour at OC's Segerstrom Center
Back in the OC for an extended stay through March 6, the hit Broadway musical's relaunched national tour returns with two superb leading ladies flying high.
Just when everyone thought it was safe to go back to see live theater again this past autumn---at least for those of us who are fully vaccinated and masked---along comes the omicron variant to spoil the fun. Productions began canceling performances during late December and early January and, sadly, I had to miss some great shows out of an abundance of caution.
But, thankfully, with infections and hospitalizations down and more booster shots adding an extra layer of protection (for now), it's back I go into the theater... double-masked, just for my own piece of mind.
What better way to ease ourselves back (again) than with a tried-and-true bonafide hit like the musical WICKED , the global stage phenomenon now back for a nice, long stay in Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through March 6, 2022.
Based on Gregory Maguire 's clever and imaginative prequel story to L. Frank Baum 's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (that spawned the classic 1939 MGM movie musical), WICKED---for the few of you unfamiliar---follows the tale of the secret friendship between the younger Glinda (née Galinda) the Good Witch and Elphaba, who would go on to be more infamously known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Mixed with not-so-subtle parallels to the perils of politics and, even, other-ism, the uplifting, crowd-pleasing show features an engaging, approachable book by Winnie Holzman and memorable, now iconic music and lyrics from Stephen Schwartz .
It's been several years since WICKED's touring company visited the OC (let alone Southern California for that matter), and you'd think that after almost 20 years of existence, the show itself would feel a bit dated and quaint now compared to more recent modern shows that have exploded out of Broadway. Well, as someone who admittedly has a deep fondness for this show (and has seen it multiple times first as a theater fan and now a theater correspondent), I can happily attest that---despite its forgivable narrative and structural flaws---WICKED is still as vibrant, as thrilling, and as emotionally satisfying as ever.
What helps the show feel as relevant and as entertaining now as it did during its early years is certainly helped by a fresh cast bringing new and exciting life to these now familiar characters. This post-lockdown relaunched national tour is headlined by two spectacular leads: the intriguing Talia Suskauer as Elphaba and the effervescent Allison Bailey as G(a)linda.
During the show's recent press performance, both laudable actors gave their respective roles refreshing vitality, sprinkling their performances with truly wonderful choices both with singing vocals and with acting that I noticed and appreciated greatly. Suskauer, in particular, wowed me in her BIG numbers, first from "The Wizard and I" all the way to her almost heartbreaking "No Good Deed"---the latter a song I normally equate to being more triumphant than openly vulnerable. For her part, Bailey made me smile with every appearance, and she had everyone wrapped around her finger with the joyful "Popular."
Suskauer and Bailey's performances were also aided tremendously by their wonderful co-stars. The dashing Jordan Litz made for a convincing cad-turned-heartthrob (with the swoon-worthy vocals to back it up) as Fiyero, the object of Elphaba's and G(a)linda's affections. Tony Award winner Clevant Derricks adds a goofy air to his Wizard of Oz, while Clifton Davis (whom I grew up watching on the sitcom Amen) makes a touching turn as Dr. Dillamond.
I was especially thrilled to see Broadway vet Lisa Howard join the cast as Madame Morrible, allowing the role to break out of the character's usual expected speak-singing cadence by giving her a chance to saaaang the role (and when you get home, you can even see her in HBO's latest period drama The Guilded Age ). Dang, I now can't imagine the role sung any other way. Amanda Fallon Smith and DJ Plunkett round out the main cast as Nessarose, Elphaba's tragic sis, and as Boq, the munchkin boy crushing on G(a)linda, respectively.
The show is understandably by now a well-oiled machine, and this recent tour certainly displays that. The costumes, the special stage effects, and even the more smartly economic sets keep everything visually stunning yet practical. Musically, the show hums with precision and harmony.
My choral friend and I were even wowed by the intricate vocal sforzando sung at various points during the show.
My only gripe was how much slower "One Short Day" is sung in this new iteration, which lessens the number's normally excitable pace that reflects the hustle-and-bustle of a couple of out-of-towners exploring the big, busy, frenetic city for the first time. It felt like an odd, unwarranted change from how it was performed in past productions.
Here for a healthy stay until March 6, now is the time to get reacquainted with (or, heck, be introduced to) WICKED, especially with this current impressive cast. It's also a good refresher for when the eventual big screen adaptation finally becomes a reality.
