Why is the Australian train called The Ghan?

The Ghan derived its name from the Afghan Express, which is was previously named. The name pays homage to 19th century Afghan camel drivers who helped Australian colonizers explore the interior of the continent. It is said that one of the original crewman of the train coined the nickname and it has been called The Ghan ever since.

How long is The Ghan Train?

The average length of the Ghan is 2,539 feet. The train length can very if train cars are added or deleted. At times of high demand, train cars will be added making the length of the Ghan as long as 3,595 feet, which includes 44 carriages.

How much does it cost to travel on The Ghan train in Australia?

The cost to ride The Ghan train excursion ranges from $1485 to $3695 and beyond depending on which trip and package you choose. There are four different itineraries that you can choose on The Ghan.

Darwin to Adelaide with Off-Train Excursions

This four day and three night trek aboard The Ghan will take you from the top end of the continent, south to the coastal region. You will begin in the lush tropical environment of Darwin, then travel through the arid, red desert portion of the country, finally to be delivered to the beautiful Southern Coast of Adelaide.

This trip has the added benefit of optional excursions such as helicopter or plane trips to romantic dinners in private locations for an additional cost.

Adelaide to Darwin

Starting your journey in the coastal town of Adelaide, you will then travel north, through the interior outback of the country and experience its remote and vast landscape in this three day and two night trip. As you move through to the town of Darwin, you will be surprised by how the environment changes from red deserts to tropical rainforests.

Adelaide to Alice Springs

In two days and one night you can experience the heart of Australia with this scenic jaunt from the Coastal town of Adelaide to the peaceful desert setting of Alice Springs. Dine under the stars and awake early to see the sunrise over the rich Australian Outback.

Darwin to Alice Springs

Begin this two day and one night trip in the tropical city of Darwin. After boarding you will enjoy a trip through the top end of the continent to the red desert setting of Alice Springs. Pass through gorges and riparian environments and enjoy a hike and a cruise among ancient sandstone cliffs.

What does the Ghan include?

The Ghan includes meals, room and board, excursions, and service. Some itineraries also offer additional off-train excursions, for a fee, to explore the surroundings of the city or town the train has stopped or a helicopter or airplane trip for a special meal in a secluded area.

How long is The Ghan Train trip?

If you take The Ghan across the continent of Australia from North to South the journey is 1,850 miles or 54 hours.

However, there are shorter itineraries available with stops in various cities. If you take The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin, it takes 36 hours and 825 miles to get to your destination by train. Taking The Ghan from Darwin to Alice Springs will take you around 24 hours and 930 miles.

Is The Ghan a luxury train?

The Ghan is among the most luxurious trains in the world. With its opulent decor, gourmet meals and impeccable service, The Ghan’s atmosphere and treatment of guests is second to none. Do you sleep on the Ghan?

The Ghan is designed to spend multiple days on board with sleeping quarters or cabins that are created to feel as if you are in an exquisite hotel room. There are several options for accommodations while on The Ghan. Choose from a Gold Twin, Gold Single or Platinum cabins.

What are The Ghan cabins like?

Cabins aboard the Ghan are tastefully decorated with special attention to comfort and accessibility. There are three accommodation levels to choose from on the Ghan.

Traditional style bench seats convert to a twin bed with upper and lower berths. Private ensuite bathrooms include a toilet, sink and shower. A tray table also makes eating meals in your cabin easy and convenient. There is also a large window to enjoy the ever changing view outside as it passes you by.

Gold Single

Designed for the solo traveler, this cabin is equipped with a single bench seat that folds out to a single bed. There is also a tray table to enjoy snacks and meals in a private setting when the need arises. There are large shared bathrooms at the end of the carriage. For every sixteen passengers in each carriage, there are two showers and two toilets. Additionally, one tip is that the Gold Single showers that are shared are much larger than the in- room showers provided for the Gold Twin passenger.

The ultimate way to travel awaits you with the Platinum Cabin. At almost twice the size of the Gold Twin Cabin, the Platinum cabin goes that extra mile in comfort and style. Choose from a twin or double bed cabin depending on your sleeping preference. Furthermore, with windows on both sides of the cabin for superior viewing and ensuite bathrooms, this cabin is great for a couple wanting just a little more room and privacy.

If you are traveling with a large family or a group, the Platinum Chairman’s Carriage is the pinnacle of comfort and privacy aboard The Ghan. Designed for up to eight people, this carriage features four Platinum level cabins that share a highly appointed lounge area complete with leather sofas and club chairs, a television and a kitchenette.

Which is better, the Indian Pacific or The Ghan?

The Ghan is jammed pack with additional experiences and excursions that might appeal to a younger clientele looking for outdoor adventure, while the Indian Pacific focuses more on fine wine, multi-course gourmet meals and casual excursions that might appeal to a more mature traveler. For a once in a lifetime experience, the Indian Pacific is better than the Ghan.

What is the dress code on the Ghan?

Casual, yet smart attire is recommended for the trip aboard The Ghan. For men, you may want to where attire such as a polo shirt and slacks. For women, sheath dresses or slacks and collard shirts are considered smart-casual attire.

However, you should pack comfortable and warm clothing for evenings in your cabin as the air conditioner can make nights tucked away in your sleeping quarters cooler.

What are the best months to travel on the Ghan?

The best months to travel on The Ghan are during High Season which are from May to August when temperatures in the desert are cooler. Excursions in The Outback are much more enjoyable with the moderate weather of autumn and winter.

Is the trip on The Ghan worth it?

Train travel on The Ghan is a breathtaking experience that for many is a “once in a lifetime” encounter. OFF TRAIN EXPERIENCES*

Alice Springs: A morning or afternoon in The Alice gives guests a glimpse into the history of yesterday. Visit the local landmarks, take a front row seat to a spectacular bird show at the Desert Park or view the permanent waterhole at Simpsons Gap. Upgrade options in Alice Springs include Pyndan Camel Tracks or the Spirit of Mount Gillen Helicopter Flight (additional fee applies).

Katherine: Choose from either the Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise, viewing both gorges or the Nitmiluk First Gorge Rock Art Cruise, gaining an insight into the culture of the Jawoyn people. From May through October an alternative experience is offered, the Katherine Outback Experience, showcasing the inner workings of life on an Australian cattle station. All guests aboard The Ghan Expedition, from Darwin to Adelaide, travel in the comfort of Platinum or Gold Service by night and by day travel off train. Starting with Nitmiluk (Katherine), followed by a full day experience in Alice Springs, see the Red Centre in all its glory. For a truly unforgettable experience, upgrade to an optional scenic flight over Uluru. Cap off the day with a spectacular barbeque dinner under the stars where guests can even ride a camel! The next stop is a guided tour of Coober Pedy, a famous South Australian outback town famous for opal mining and where 70 per cent of the world’s opals originate.

Katherine: Choose from either the Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise, viewing both gorges or the Nitmiluk First Gorge Rock Art Cruise, gaining an insight into the culture of the Jawoyn people. From May through October an alternative experience is offered, the Katherine Outback Experience, showcasing the inner workings of life on an Australian cattle station. Alice Springs: This morning guests will be greeted by a view of the spectacular Red Centre. A full day of experiences awaits them in the iconic outback town of Alice Springs, which provides ample opportunity to visit the town landmarks, and get close to Australia’s incredible flora and fauna. An optional upgrade is a scenic flight to Uluru, where guests get to see the famous region by air before landing to enjoy a guided base tour and lunch; return in time to meet the rest of the guests at a spectacular dinner under the stars at the historic Telegraph Station.

Coober Pedy: Venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining town of Coober Pedy, where more than half of the residents live underground. Explore the tunnels and caves of this underground town, where guests will enjoy a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations before setting off to the stunning outback moonscape that is the Breakaways. Dinner is served back on the train where guests can enjoy a nightcap as their journey continues.

South Australia's Adventures of a Lifetime: Ride the Ghan

Experience Australia’s most iconic rail trip—the Ghan.

Australia’s most iconic rail trip, the Ghan , runs north from Adelaide through the harsh deserts of the center on a transcontinental journey that stretches more than 1,800 miles all the way to the tropical city of Darwin. You can cross the entire continent from south to north in three or fours days, or go only halfway to Alice Springs on a two-day trip. The return journey from Darwin offers extended tours from August to October.

Adelaide to Tarcoola

Every Sunday afternoon, the Ghan is scheduled to pull out of Adelaide’s Parklands Railway Station at 12:15 p.m. It heads north through the rolling wheat fields of South Australia’s mid-north and then into Port Augusta.

At the edge of the outback, Port Augusta was the departure point for the original narrow-gauge Ghan railway that ran to Oodnadatta from 1891 to 1928 before the line was extended to Alice Springs in 1929. The Ghan was named in honor of the Afghan camel drivers whose caravans supplied the railway’s construction; the camel drivers were a lifeline to the lonely desert town of Alice Springs before the railroad was built. The railway made the camels superfluous, and thousands of them were let loose in the desert, where their descendants still run wild today.

The old line was abandoned in 1980 after completion of a new standard-gauge line. The Ghan now runs on the Trans-Australian Railway to remote Tarcoola, where it branches off onto the new line.

Australia’s other great train journey, the Indian Pacific, also runs on the Adelaide-Tarcoola track on its epic east-west trip across the continent. The Indian Pacific runs from Sydney to Adelaide, then on to Tarcoola, where the routes of the two trains part. From Tarcoola, the Indian Pacific heads west across the vast, empty expanse of the Nullarbor Plain to Perth.

Tarcoola to Alice Springs

The Ghan heads north from Tarcoola to Manguri, near the famous opal-mining town of Coober Pedy. On the return southbound journey for the four-day trip—which is in operation from August through October—the train stops for a tour of Coober Pedy. On the northbound trip, it stops at Marla to see the desert sunrise. Heading on into the Red Centre, the train then crosses the state border into the Northern Territory and traverses the massive Finke River Bridge before pulling into Alice Springs around 1:45 p.m.

After a four-hour stop—during which you can take a tour of the city, a camel ride, or partake in other adventures—the Ghan continues overnight on its way north to the tropics.

Alice Springs to Darwin

The original Ghan went no farther north than Alice Springs. Although for decades there was much buoyant talk of one day extending the line all the way to Darwin, nothing much was done about it until 2001, when work began on the final 882-mile stretch of track. After more than a billion dollars were spent on the project, the new line opened in early 2004.

The train makes a morning stop at Katherine—during which you can tour the town’s famous gorge—and pulls into Darwin’s train station around 5:30 that afternoon. The return journey leaves Darwin on Wednesday at 10 a.m., arriving back in Adelaide on Friday. From August to October, the Ghan has extended stops and tours in Alice Springs and Coober Pedy, and arrives back on Saturday.

TRAVEL TIPS

Bookings: The Ghan Platinum and Gold Services offer first-class sleeping cars. Passengers have access to plush restaurant cars, with all meals, drinks, and tours included. Prices are steep, but advance-purchase discounts are available; these tickets are nonrefundable. Less expensive Red Service seats, with meals and tours available for purchase on board, will be discontinued on July 1, 2016. See Great Southern Rail for details.

The Ghan Train Journey – An Epic Australian Rail Adventure in Style

The Ghan train journey takes lovers of slow travel on a leisurely rail adventure from north to south through the Red Centre of Australia. One of Australia’s greatest train journeys, The Ghan departs from Darwin, the tropical capital of the Northern Territory in the Top End of the country, and your destination is Adelaide , the lovely, laidback South Australian capital, famed for its fine food and wine, arts and culture, sprawling parks and gardens, and endless beaches. You can also do the trip in reverse from Adelaide to Darwin.

The Ghan train journey has a special place in my heart and not just because I’m Australian. I’m Sydney-born and not all ‘East Coasters’ feel as deeply connected to Australia’s red heart as I do. While I adore Australian beaches, the Outback with its ochre-red soil, silvery ghost gums, brilliant blue skies, and cotton-wool clouds is my happy place and I’m happiest in the heart of Australia with its Albert Namatjira landscapes.

My family travelled around Australia and lived in Alice Springs when I was in my early teens. Our weekends there would be filled with camping trips and four-wheel-drive adventures. We’d bump along corrugated dirt tracks to palm-shaded valleys for sweaty hikes through ancient gorges, dips in serene swimming holes skirted by sandy beaches, and moonlit barbecues under the stars.

My dad worked on the new standard gauge railway line for The Ghan railway at the time and we got to go to the official opening of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs section of the line. I remember standing next to the towering Gough Whitlam, Australia’s legendary prime minister, while Princess Alexandra cut the ribbon.

Journeying on The Ghan was a very special experience for me. I’m sure it will be for you too. Here’s what to expect on this legendary Australian rail adventure.

How to Plan and Prepare for The Ghan Journey

Book the ghan when you see a deal.

The Ghan train expeditions are seasonal and they’re incredibly popular, selling quickly, so you really have to act fast and book tickets for The Ghan as soon as you see dates announced. Itineraries generally include a 3-4 day rail journey on the legendary train in either twin cabin Gold Service or a Platinum service cabin with a double bed with 2-3 days of accommodation and activities in Darwin and Adelaide.

While The Ghan packages differ from season to season, they are typically all-inclusive on the train and usually include all on-board dining and drinks and unmissable Off Train Experiences in Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy; along with pre-trip accommodation with welcome drinks, daily breakfast and transfers, a choice of activities; the services of expert on-ground staff; and all entrance fees and sightseeing per itinerary.

Do Some Pre-Trip Reading and Movie-Watching

Do some pre-trip reading and movie-watching before embarking on The Ghan train journey and you’ll get so much more out of the experience. You’re not only travelling through Australia’s red heart, you’re journeying through its spiritual heart, so I suggest your pre-trip reading start with Marcia Langton’s Welcome to Country, a Travel Guide to Indigenous Australia . There’s also time to read books and watch movies on the train, so see my extensive list below for more suggestions.

Book Transfers Ahead of Time

Transfers are usually included in Darwin between the hotel and the railway station on the day of your departure for The Ghan train journey, but you’ll need to book your airport transfer to Darwin in advance, as well as your Adelaide transfers to save money and the hassle of waiting for a taxi, as we did. It took ages.

Book Activities and Tours in Darwin and Adelaide

If you’re starting in Darwin, depending on when your flight arrives, you may have some free time. We recommend getting your bearings on our self-guided Darwin city walk , which takes in many of the key sights. If you can spare more time, arrive a coupleof days ahead of the start of the itinerary and do a tour to Kakadu (it’s a long day, but worth it) or day trip to Litchfield National Park if it’s not included on the itinerary. It’s closer to Darwin, so easier to get to.

Consider Extending Your Stays If You Can

If you live on Australia’s East Coast, the chances of you having been to Darwin or even Adelaide are slim. Bizarrely, Darwin does not even make it onto Australians’ top ten destinations. Most Australians would rather go overseas. But Darwin is a compelling city with fantastic waterfront parks, weekend markets filled with stalls with multicultural eats, terrific museums, and magic sunset rituals.

Darwin is also the launching pad for road trips to nearby Litchfield National Park, Mary River National Park and Kakadu National Park , all endowed with dramatic landscapes, rich in ancient history and indigenous art and culture, with thundering waterfalls and cooling waterholes, and opportunities galore to gawk at birdlife and wildlife, especially crocodiles.

While you could self-drive (see our guide to driving from Darwin to Mary River and Kakadu ), once you get there you’ll get more out of the trip on an indigenous tour or cruise with a local Aboriginal guide.

Adelaide has a fabulous food and wine scene, some of Australia’s best museums and art galleries, gorgeous gardens and more sprawling parks, stunning sandy beaches, and loads of outdoor dining opportunities.

Adelaide also has some of Australia’s best wine regions in the backyard, and Kangaroo Island , with its abundance of wildlife, wild white-sand beaches, and more wonderful food and wine. Who said it wasn’t about the destinations?

What to Pack for The Ghan Train Journey

Pack carefully and weigh your bags.

There are baggage restrictions on The Ghan train. Passengers are only allowed to have one carry-on piece in their cabin with a maximum weight of 7kg, although of course you can take a handbag, light day-pack or laptop in addition to this. You are also allowed two pieces of checked-in baggage with a maximum weight of 30kg per piece.

However, you can’t access those bags between Darwin and Adelaide (and vice versa). That means if The Ghan train journey is part of a longer holiday and you’re extending time in Adelaide or Darwin and exploring more of South Australia and/or The Northern Territory, you will need to make sure you don’t lock something you need in the checked-in bags.

What Clothes To Pack for The Ghan

Pack outdoorsy cottons and linens, a sun hat and heavy-duty sunblock for the excursions to Nitmiluk National Park and Alice Springs as it will be hot out. Comfy walking shoes are a must, especially for Nitmiluk. If the water levels are low, which they usually are just before the wet season starts, you’ll have to clamber over rocks between gorges and boats.

Smart-casual is fine for the train – take a cardigan as it can get chilly – and nice PJs for the cabin if you fancy being woken by staff delivering a cup of tea to your bed. Pack something a bit special for cocktails and dinner in the evenings when passengers tend to dress up a little.

I’ve not seen black tie and evening gowns on The Ghan as I have on the Eastern & Oriental Express, however, the blokes swap their long shorts for trousers and women do what women do and dress up. Flat shoes are best. It’s a train after all and it bumps and sways on some of the Outback tracks.

Other Gadgets To Pack for The Ghan

Pack a camera, batteries and power-banks . There is Wi-Fi in your cabin, but only when you’re in or near civilisation. It will cut out as you leave towns and communities. There are power-points in the cabin to recharge your gear. A pair of small binoculars will get used if you enjoy a bit of birdwatching and there are lots of birds to spot.

Books to Take on The Ghan

Not everyone is as content as I am at staring out a window at constantly changing landscapes for hours on end, so there are a few books you should pack that might inspire you to gaze a bit more and think a little differently about the geography outside your window.

Pack a copy of Marcia Langton’s Welcome to Country, a Travel Guide to Indigenous Australia (link above) which I also recommend as pre-trip reading, along with Richard Broome’s Aboriginal Australians: A History Since 1788 , which tells the history of Australia from the standpoint of our First Nations Peoples.

Look for the expanded fifth edition which covers the Northern Territory Intervention, remote Australia’s mining boom, the Uluru Statement, and the resurgence of interest among Australians in traditional Aboriginal knowledge and culture.

If you’re interested in Australian food and agriculture, Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu reveals how Australia’s pre-colonial Aboriginal peoples sowed, harvested and irrigated land, stored crops, used domesticated plants, and built dams and houses – you’ll look at the landscapes out your window in a very different light.

Bill Gammage’s The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia and Billy Griffiths’ Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia should have that same effect on you, as well as changing how you see history.

Gammage reveals how early European explorers noted how land across Australia looked like parkland with sprawling grassy areas within woodland and walking paths, evoking an English estate. This is because Australia’s Aboriginal peoples systematically managed the land, using fire and native plant life-cycles to ensure plentiful food for people and wildlife and prevent wildfires.

Griffiths’ book is one for lovers or archaeology, weaving history, biography and literature together to tell the story of Aboriginal archaeology in Australia and the archaeologists who uncovered traces of ancient Australia and evidence of 60,000 years of continual habitation.

If you enjoy birdwatching, there’s plenty to see on The Ghan train journey – from kites to wedge-tailed eagles, cockatoos and galahs – so a Field Guide to Australian Birds or The Australian Bird Guide will get used, along with those binoculars. There are books on Australian birdlife and wildlife in the small library in the lounge, but these tend to disappear soon after the train leaves Darwin and you won’t see them again until you’re pulling into Adelaide.

Movies to Watch on The Ghan

If you’re planning on loading up a few films before you leave home for post-dinner movies during The Ghan train journey, don’t plan on finishing any epics. While you’re at dinner your cabin seats will have been converted into double bunks if you’re staying in Gold class or a double bed if you’re in Platinum, and the train movement will quickly lull you to sleep.

But if you do want to attempt something, then start with the Baz Luhrmann-directed Australia , set in Darwin during the World War II bombing by the Japanese, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The landscapes are breathtaking, the story is uplifting (and we all need a lift up right now) and it’s loads of fun.

The 1955 Australian classic Jedda , directed by Claude Chavel, is set in the Northern Territory. It was Australia’s first colour film and starred Aboriginal actors Robert Tudawali and Ngarla Kunoth. When you’re on the cruise boat wending your way through the spectacular sandstone cliffs of Nitmiluk National Park, your local Jawoyn guide will point out Jedda’s Rock, but I won’t spoil the film for you by explaining its name. Other locations include Mary River south east of Darwin and Standley Chasm and Ormiston Gorge not far from Alice Springs.

The feel-good campy Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert , directed by Stephan Elliot and starring Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Bill Hunter, is a must before you arrive in Alice Springs, where much of the movie is set. You’ll recognise Simpsons Gap and the MacDonnell Ranges in an instant.

What to Expect on The Ghan Train

Your cabin is comfy but compact.

While you’re going to be immeasurably more comfortable in a Gold cabin than you would be sitting up in a seat, the cabins are compact, which is why you can only take a carry-on each. There is storage space, however, including a wardrobe and a shelf, but you’ll need to stay organised to maintain that sense of comfort.

The Ghan’s Platinum cabins have a lot more space and after the staff sneak in to transform your seats into beds while you’re dining, you can slide your bags under the double bed. You can also store stuff in your private bathrooms before you shower.

Magic Sunrises from the Comfort of Bed

If you’re an early riser and love a good sunrise and waking to the warmth of that big fiery ball in the sky on the cheeks, you’ll relish the experience from your cabin bed. Open the blind before you doze off.

I could have laid in bed for hours watching the colours of the earth cycle from dusky pink, peach and apricot to musk, rust-red and tangerine as the sun rose and illuminated the scorched land. That means accept the offer of a pot of tea in bed.

Cabin Time, But Not as Much as You Might Imagine

While you might envisage most of your time on The Ghan being spent in your comfy cabin, working your way through a few books in between naps, by the time you’ve finished your pot of tea, it will be time for breakfast in the Queen Adelaide dining carriage.

And you’ll definitely want to linger over breakfast, so opt for the second breakfast sitting. Then you should have some cabin time before your off-train excursion or before it’s time to eat again. Make the most of the cabin time you have, as the cabins are a delight.

Prepare to Eat and Drink to Your Stomach’s Content

The food and drinks are a real highlight of The Ghan train journey. There are welcome glasses of bubbly in the cabin after you’ve boarded (we clinked a Croser Petaluma from the Adelaide Hills on our last trip) and Western and South Australian wines and beers are offered in the lounge during the introductory briefing and before and after meals.

Expect three-course menus for lunch and four courses for dinner with plenty of beautiful Australian produce and well-matched Aussie wines. When we last travelled, highlights included prawn and crab dumplings with a lemon myrtle infused seafood broth, grilled saltwater barramundi with sweet potato mash and spinach, a roasted kangaroo fillet with crocodile boudin blanc, potato puree and quandong jus.

There were Australian cheese courses as an alternative to dessert, with the likes of a Barossa Valley brie, Limestone Coast clothed cheddar and Lobethal goat blue cheese. We recommend the later sittings for all meal times so you can linger and not feel rushed. You may want to prepare for all the food with pre- and post-train walks (or runs) in Darwin and Adelaide.

Magic Sunsets from the Outback Explorer Lounge

You could savour the sunsets from your cabin as you will the sunrises, but who doesn’t love watching the sun go down with a glass of white wine in hand? Plus, there’ll be some nibbles to go with those. Everyone else will have the same idea, so you’ll need to get to the lounge early-ish to snag a good spot.

An added bonus of sundowners in the lounge is that you can move from side to side, snapping pics of the sun sinking beneath the horizon to the west and the changing colours of the landscape in the east. If you book a table for dinner for the later sitting, you can linger after the first diners depart or head back to your cabin for a quiet one before dinner.

You Might Make As Many Friends As Memories

If you’re travelling as a couple, you can ask to dine alone if you’re on a romantic getaway, honeymoon or celebrating a special anniversary, however, at some point during The Ghan train journey, due to the numbers of passengers and number of seats, you will probably share a table with others and make new friends.

If you don’t do it over dinner, it will be over drinks, as there are plenty of opportunities for those – and there’s a camaraderie that naturally develops after a couple of days and nights in close quarters with other Australians on a train. Take plenty of old-fashioned business cards as you won’t always have access to Wi-Fi to ping one from your phone.

The Ghan Train Journey Excursions and Activities

The Ghan itineraries and the excursions and activities vary slightly from trip to trip, so check the link at the start of this post for a detailed itinerary, but the epic 3,000 kilometre journey kicks off in Darwin and ends in Adelaide, or vice versa.

The itinerary typically includes a choice of excursions and experiences at each stop. Of the options available from Katherine, the highlight for us is the spectacular Nitmuluk gorge cruise (which I’ve now done a handful of times) and the helicopter ride of the gorge.

From Alice Springs, a walk through Simpsons Gap or Standley Chasm is special, a camel ride is good fun, before visiting the Alice Springs Desert Park and the Royal Flying Doctors is also fascinating, For an additional fee, you can also do a scenic flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta, so lots of choices there.

From Coober Pedy, the itineraries usually offer a choice of a visit to the majestic Breakaways, the chance to explore the underground town, and an opportunity to get to go fossicking for opals.

The Ghan train trip from Darwin to Adelaide operated by Journey Beyond, is one of the world’s great rail journeys and an iconic Australian outback experience.

Taking a trip on The Ghan railway has been high on our bucket list for so long!

For few years we’d been building up our Qantas point balance to use on a trip to Europe in business class. But after the pandemic hit and it became clear that Australia wasn’t opening international borders for a looooooong time. So, we decided to use our points to  tick an item off our bucket list  and take a trip on  The Ghan Expedition train in 2021 . 

After thoroughly checking The Ghan booking policy (in case a local outbreak and border closures impacted our plans), we decided to book the train trip from Darwin to Adelaide.

Given Australian tourism operators experienced a massive blow during the pandemic, we wanted to support them where we could. So, we decided to plan an epic journey from the Top End of Australia to the bottom. 

We kicked off our holiday with a few days in Darwin, followed by a 2-day road trip from Darwin to Kakadu and back, then we hopped on The Ghan train which took us from Darwin to Adelaide over 4 days. We finished our weeklong itinerary with 2 days of wine tasting in the Adelaide Hills – a great spot for a weekend getaway! 

If a trip on The Ghan is not currently on your Australia bucket list , we recommend adding it ASAP! It was the perfect mix of adventure, food, wine, and a little bit of indulgence. Plus, we got to see some of the most  iconic landmarks in Australia !

The Ghan Timetable 

The Ghan train timetable runs from February to November. The train does not operate in December and January as this is the rainy season, which can cause flooding of the train tracks and schedule interruptions.

The Best Time to Travel on The Ghan Train

The best time to travel on The Ghan is the high season which runs from May to August. This is also the most popular time as the temperature in the desert is much cooler during the day, making off train excursions a more enjoyable experience.

The second best time to travel on The Ghan is during the months of February to April, and September to November (inclusive), which is the shoulder season. If you’re looking to save some money, this is when you’ll find The Ghan ticket prices to be slightly cheaper, but the weather during off train excursions in Alice Springs, Coober Pedy and Katherine is a little more extreme. In saying that, transportation during the day excursions is via luxury airconditioned coaches.

The Ghan Route

The Ghan train journey between Adelaide and Darwin offers four uniquely different routes to choose from, depending which direction you wish to travel in:

• The Ghan Expedition from Darwin to Adelaide (4 Days + 3 Nights)
• Outback Spirit Journey from Adelaide to Darwin (3 Days + 2 Nights)
• Adelaide to Alice Springs or vice versa (2 Days + 1 Night)
• Darwin to Alice Springs or vice versa (2 Days + 1 Night)

What’s the difference between the Adelaide to Darwin route and the Darwin to Adelaide route?   Because the journey from Darwin to Adelaide is 4 days (instead of 3), it offers an extra day of sightseeing in Coober Pedy plus Dinner under the stars at Telegraph Station in Alice Springs. Unfortunately, the journey from Adelaide to Darwin is only 3 days and does not include these two experiences.

Taking a trip on The Ghan has been on our  Australia Bucket List  for so long, and we wanted to experience the best that the train had to offer. The Ghan Expedition route from Darwin to Adelaide is the original historical journey through the centre of Australia and is considered one of the world’s great train journeys. So, we opted for this route as it is the longest and arguably the best.

After speaking with a few of the staff on board, almost all of them agreed that The Ghan Expedition route offers the best variety of things to see and do during your journey through the centre of Australia.

The Ghan Cabins

If you’re planning to travel on The Ghan, then there are a few different cabin types you can choose from. Unfortunately, if you’re travelling on a budget, then you are probably in the wrong place. As I mentioned, the Ghan is one of the world’s great train journeys and as such, it doesn’t come cheap.

The Ghan offers luxury private train accommodation with all-inclusive dining, beverages, and off-train excursions. The Ghan train offers three different classes to choose from:

• Platinum Class
• The Chairman’s Carriage

Platinum Class Cabins

What is the difference between Gold and Platinum class on the Ghan?

The Ghan Platinum Class cabins offer the epitome in luxury train travel. A slightly more spacious cabin with larger windows for better viewing and deluxe furnishings. The cabins were recently refurbished before my trip. 

The size of Platinum Class cabins is much larger than a first-class suite on an international long-haul flight. The cabins feature lounge seating during the day with ample space to move about in your own cabin. At night the seating is converted into either double or twin beds (not bunks) by the stealthy train fairies (aka. your private butler). 

All Platinum Class cabins come with:

• Power outlets
• In cabin TV and audio system with train commentary
• Complimentary tea and coffee station
• 90kg luggage per guest 
• Private transfers to and from the station at the start and end of your journey

Each carriage also has a mini bar station with tea and coffee, snacks, and drinks.

Gold Class Cabins

The Ghan Gold Class is the most popular choice of accommodation on the Ghan. There is a choice between Gold Twin, Gold Single, Gold Superior, and Gold Access cabins. Each of the different cabins is detailed further below.

We chose to travel in a Gold Twin cabin. The cabins are quite small with a compact bathroom but have everything you would need on the train. They were larger than a first-class suite on an airline and were very comfortable. My husband and I were able to move about in the cabin, get changed, have a shower and sit and enjoy the views out the window.

During the day, the top bed is folded up, allowing more space to move about the cabin and the bottom bed is set up as a long three-seater lounge. At night, the top bed is folded down and a ladder installed allowing access to the top bunk. 

Both beds are made up for sleeping by the train attendant while you enjoy dinner in the dining carriage and then packed away while you’re at breakfast. The beds are compact with good-quality mattresses, allowing you to sleep comfortably on the train.

There is plenty of space under the lounge seat to store luggage. And the cabin even had a small closet which was just large enough to fit both of our coats.

We found that the only time we spent in our cabin was sleeping, showering and change. Most of our time on the train was spent in the lounge or dining carriages. 

All Gold Class cabins come with:

• In-cabin audio system with train commentary
• 60kg luggage per guest
• Shuttle bus transfers to the station at the start of your journey (from selected hotels)

Pro Tip:  Some Gold Class cabin seating faces the front, and others face backwards, if you don’t like travelling backwards, be sure to request forward facing seating at the time of booking.

Gold Single Cabin

The Gold Single cabin is roughly the same size as a Business Class suite on an international long-haul flight. The Gold single cabin features a comfortable lounge chair that converts into a single bed at night and a larger shared bathroom facility.

Gold Twin Cabin

The Gold Class twin cabins are roughly double the size of a Gold Single cabin. Each Gold Twin cabin features a 3-seater lounge during the day, that is converted into twin bunk beds during the night and a private compact ensuite.

The size of the Gold Suite is approximately double the size of a Gold Twin cabin. The Gold Suite features a ¾-size double bed plus an additional fold-down bunk, a full-size ensuite, a lounge area, TV and DVD player, and a private minibar.

Gold Access Cabin

There are also Gold Access cabins available which are reserved for mobility-impaired guests. These cabins feature a larger entry door, two seats that convert into two lower berths at night, and an accessible ensuite bathroom.

The Ghan Restaurant & Lounges

The Ghan Train features two restaurants and lounges:

• The Platinum Club carriage (restaurant and lounge for Platinum guests only)
• The Queen Adelaide Restaurant (for Gold Class guests)
• The Outback Explorer Lounge (for Gold Class guests)

The food and wine onboard The Ghan was absolutely fantastic. I was genuinely surprised at the quality of the meals. Given the small kitchens, I didn’t have high expectations of the food before boarding. But the onboard chefs certainly do a great job at planning and executing their menus. The food ended up being a highlight of our trip on the Ghan.

I am vegetarian and the chefs had no issue with accommodating my needs. Most of the menus featured at least one vegetarian choice. But the staff were very obliging if I asked for an alternative. Each meal was 2-3 courses, so you certainly won’t go hungry!

The wine list featured wines from some of the best wineries around the Adelaide region, sparkling wine from Tasmania, and other really well-known Australian wine labels. I loved that the wine list (as well as the food menu) really showcased the best of Australian produce!

Platinum Club Carriage

Guests travelling in Platinum Class have exclusive access to the Platinum Club carriage, where meals and pre-dinner drinks are served. The Platinum Club carriage offers gourmet breakfasts, two-course lunches, and four-course dinners served with some of the best Australian wines, beers, and French champagne.

Breakfast and refreshments for Platinum guests may also be served in your cabin upon request.

The Platinum Club carriage also features a beautifully styled lounge where guests can mingle throughout the day. But as Platinum Class guests are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want (within reason), we met a few Platinum guests who joined us in the Gold Class lounge one evening for drinks (although we were not permitted to use the Platinum Club carriage – just like an airline won’t let you into First Class when you’re flying in Economy).

Queen Adelaide Restaurant & Outback Explorer Lounge

Gold Class guests enjoy breakfast, lunch and three-course dinners in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage featuring gourmet Australian produce and a selection of Australian wine, beer, and spirits. 

The Outback Explorer Lounge is also open to Gold Class guests to enjoy drinks and snacks throughout the day while mingling with other guests.

A note for solo travellers:  The Gold Class dining carriage features shared tables, so you’ll always be seated with other guests allowing you to meet fellow travellers. The Outback Explorer Lounge is always filled with guests mingling and chatting about their experiences and spent time with a few solo travellers on our journey. You won’t feel isolated at all!

Off-Train Excursions

Pre and Post Journey Tours

We highly recommend adding a few extra days in Darwin and Adelaide (as we did) before and after the train trip. Alternatively, you can do as we did and explore Darwin and Adelaide on your own. 

In Darwin, we recommend staying at the  Vibe Hotel Darwin  or  Hilton Darwin . Enjoy a  harbour sunset cruise , a  day tour to Litchfield National Park , or a day trip to Kakadu . Or, if you have a few days up your sleeve, then  hire a car  and plan an overnight trip out to Kakadu National Park.

In Adelaide, we recommend staying at the  Mayfair Hotel  or  The Playford Adelaide . The  Adelaide Oval Roof Climb  is a unique experience, or you can take a  day trip to the Barossa Valley  for a delicious winery lunch. Alternatively, rent a car and head out to  Mount Lofty House  in the Adelaide Hills for a romantic getaway.

Off Train Excursions

Each day of the journey aboard The Ghan involves an off-train excursion. Excursions are inclusive in the price and there are usually a few options to choose from. This is a great way to tick off a few Australia Bucket List experiences in one journey.

During our trip on The Ghan Expedition Darwin to Adelaide, we got to experience three off-train experiences in Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy.

While the Ghan ticket price is all-inclusive, some of the off-train excursions (such as the helicopter tours) require an additional supplement to be paid onboard. However, each destination offered several tour options that are included as part of the package.

You don’t actually book the excursions until you board the train, but it pays to check out what’s on offer beforehand. To view the complete range of current off-train excursions, check the official Journey Beyond website  here .

The first day of our trip involved an off-train experience in Katherine. We boarded the train in Darwin in the morning and enjoyed our first meal (brunch) onboard. The train attendants came around to note down our preference for excursions at each destination. After approximately 4 hours we arrived in Kathrine and got off the train for our first excursion.

We were given the option of taking a cruise in Nitmiluk Gorge, an authentic outback experience on a working cattle station (which is apparently highly rated), or a helicopter ride over Nitmiluk Gorge.

While most guests chose the cruise in Nitmiluk Gorge, we chose to pay an extra $200 each for a 20-minute helicopter flight over the Gorge which was an absolutely spectacular experience.

Alice Springs

The second day involves an off-train excursion in Alice Springs. You will arrive at Alice Springs station shortly after breakfast and board a bus that takes you to your chosen experience. There are several options available – including hiking in Simpsons Gap, Mountain biking around the unique desert terrain, or watching the bird show at Alice Springs Desert Park.

We chose to do mountain biking, which was by far the smallest tour group and the most active. The mountain biking trails around Alice Springs are world-class, but they are relatively easy, so you don’t need to be a very experienced rider (I’m certainly not!). 

Other guests on the train who watched the bird show were absolutely blown away, and part of me was wishing I could have done both.

After the tour in Alice Springs, all the passengers come together for an Outback BBQ Dinner at the Telegraph Station. This was a fantastic experience where you get to learn a bit of history about Alice Springs and enjoy a unique outback-style meal under the stars before hopping back on the train for the evening.

Coober Pedy

The train arrives in Coober Pedy shortly after breakfast and all guests board coaches for a day of sightseeing around the unique opal mining town. 

There are three different tour options, all of which include a tour of the opal mines and dugouts (after all this is the main attraction in Coober Pedy). I highly recommend booking the tour that includes a trip out to the Breakaways – stunning colourful rock formations that dramatically rise above the flat desert surroundings.

After the tour, all passengers gather in the desert next to the train for sunset drinks and canapes around the fire. This was such a lovely way to come together with other travellers and celebrate a wonderful trip, before boarding the train for our final evening.

Our Review of The Ghan

What did we really think of our trip on the ghan.

We absolutely loved it! We actually enjoyed our trip on The Ghan a lot more than we expected. At first, we thought we might get a little bored while on the train, but it was quite the opposite. We both packed a good book to read but found that we spent very little time in our cabin and I didn’t open my book once during the entire journey.

The 3-day trip from Darwin to Adelaide seemed to go by very quickly. Each day we were busy enjoying action-packed adventures in Katherine, Alice Springs or Coober Pedy. Whenever we were on the train, we were either sleeping or socialising with other guests in the lounge or restaurant.

What Did We Like the Most?

We loved the food, the staff and the people we met!

The crew on board made for a wonderful experience. They were all very friendly and accommodating of our many requests. My husband occasionally asked for an extra meal, which wasn’t an issue at all. We even requested to leave our tour early in Alice Springs to visit some family members who lived there, and the staff were very attentive to ensure we were back on the train in time for departure.

Meeting other guests onboard was such a great experience. There were people from all over the country, and from all walks of life and we had a great time getting to know them all. The passengers of The Ghan tend to be well-travelled and were great company. We’ve absolutely made some lifelong friends during our trip.

What Did We Like the Least?

It’s honestly hard to pick something we didn’t like because we had so much fun throughout the entire trip. But if I could pick anything, the tour in Coober Pedy was quite long, about 7 hours, and consisted of a lot of hopping on and off the coach. By the end, I was well and truly ready to get back to the train, but we did get to see a lot of the fascinating mining town and our coach driver was a real character. 

As a side note, there are shorter tours available but we chose the longer one as we’re not sure if we will ever get the opportunity to visit Coober Pedy again and we wanted to make sure we really got to experience the place.

What is the General Age Group on the Ghan?

We are in our forties and initially expected to be the minority age demographic onboard. This was not the case at all. While travellers aged 55+ did tend to make up a large portion of the guests on board, there was a really great mixture of people and ages on the train. We really clicked with most of our fellow travellers, regardless of age, and even met quite a few who were younger than us!

Is The Ghan Worth the Money? 

Absolutely, in my opinion. Although we didn’t actually pay for our trip in dollars (we paid in Qantas points), we still think that the service onboard as well as the experience you get travelling through parts of Australia that are unseen by most tourists is absolutely worth it.

Here are some expert tips and answers to common questions to help you prepare for your trip:

• What clothes to wear on the Ghan?  Smart casual is the dress code suggested while onboard the train. Most guests tend to get a little dressy in the evening, but the general vibe onboard is casual and relaxed. 
• What do I need to pack for the Ghan train? Smart casual attire for morning and evening meals. Be sure to pack something appropriate for daily off-train excursions – bring good walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. Activewear and sneakers are suggested if you plan to participate in active excursions such as bushwalking or mountain biking. It can get quite cold in the desert at night (even during summer), so be sure to pack a jacket and warm clothes.
• Is there WiFi on the Ghan? Yes, there is. Although, the WiFi signal was not great during some parts of the journey. After all, the train trip does traverse some of the most remote parts of Australia.
• How much luggage can I take on the Ghan? Due to space constraints, you should plan to take carry-on luggage onboard only. Additional luggage can be checked in; however, this cannot be accessed throughout the journey. Platinum guests may check-in up to 3 x 30kg, whereas Gold guests can check-in 2 x 30kg.
• Are there showers on the Ghan? Yes. Gold Twin cabins have a compact ensuite with toilet, shower and basin. Platinum cabins have a full-size ensuite, and Gold Single cabins have access to a large shared bathroom facility with showers.
• Is there a gym on the Ghan? No, unfortunately, there is not a gym onboard the Ghan. However, some of the off-train excursions offer an adventurous option, such as bush walks and mountain biking experiences.
• What is there to do on the Ghan? When you’re not sleeping, you can expect to spend a large amount of time onboard chatting and socializing with other guests in the restaurant or lounge carriage. During the day, most of your time will be spent enjoying the off-train excursions at each stop.
• What stations does the Ghan stop at? The Ghan Expedition train starts in Darwin and stops at Katherine, Alice Springs, Manguri (near Coober Pedy), and Adelaide. At these stops, passengers will be allowed to get off the train to enjoy a sightseeing tour of their choice.
• Does the Ghan stop at night? Yes, it does. The Ghan railway is shared with freight trains carrying supplies between Adelaide, Alice Springs, and Darwin. The Ghan train may occasionally stop throughout the journey to allow freight trains to pass, or for scheduled maintenance checks. However, these stops are for technical purposes only and you are generally not permitted to get off at this time.
• How long does the Ghan take to go from Adelaide to Darwin? The journey from Adelaide to Darwin takes three days and two nights with sightseeing tours in Alice Springs and Katherine.
• How long does the Ghan take to go from Darwin to Adelaide? The journey from Darwin to Adelaide takes four days and three nights with daily sightseeing tours in Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy.
• How long does it take to go from Darwin to Alice Springs? The journey from Darwin to Alice Springs (and vice versa) takes two days and one night and includes a day excursion in Katherine.
• How long does it take to go from Adelaide to Alice Springs? The journey from Adelaide to Alice Springs (and vice versa) takes two days and one night and includes a day excursion in Coober Pedy.
• Do you have to do the off-train excursions? No. these are completely optional. We had family members living in Alice Springs and chose to spend the day with them instead of participating in the excursion. Just be sure to discuss your plans with the train attendant to ensure you are back on board before the train departs!
• Can you see Uluru from the Ghan? Unfortunately, you will not see Uluru from the train. However, you can choose to upgrade your excursion in Alice Springs and take a scenic charter flight to Ayers Rock.
• What is the best cabin on the Ghan? This really depends on your preference but the Gold Twin cabins are the most popular choice for travellers. The platinum class has much larger cabins and offers superior facilities, food and service.
• Are meals included on the Ghan? Yes, the Ghan ticket prices are all-inclusive. Whether the meal takes place on or off the train, all meals during the journey are included in the price. Some off-train meals include lunch in an opal mine cave-in Coober Pedy and an outback bush dinner at Telegraph station in Alice Springs.
• Is the Ghan all-inclusive ?  Yes. The Ghan ticket prices are all-inclusive, meaning the price includes all off-train excursions, meals, and beverages (beer, wine and non-alcoholic) throughout the journey. You literally don’t have to pay for anything while you are on board the train.
• How many passengers are on the Ghan train? It varies depending on the number of bookings and time of year. But there can be between 100 and 280 guests onboard plus up to 55 crew members. There can be up to 36 carriages during the peak season to handle the larger number of bookings.
• Are kids allowed on the Ghan? Yes. Children are welcome on the Ghan.
• Does the Ghan go through Coober Pedy? The Ghan stops are Manguri station which is 40km west of Coober Pedy. The Ghan Expedition train from Darwin to Adelaide includes a day excursion to Coober Pedy. However, the trip from Adelaide to Darwin does not include a day tour in Coober Pedy, only an evening stop at Manguri for a desert dinner experience.
• Can I put my car on the Ghan? Yes, you can! If you’re planning to do a bit of travelling before and after the journey, you can pack all your gear in your car and check it in at the departure rail terminal. Read more about the Motorail Service  here .
• Does the Ghan run all year?  The Ghan train runs from February to November. It does not run during December and January.

Everything you need to know about travelling on board The Ghan

The undeniable romance of train travel calls to many travellers, and a trip on board the iconic Ghan captures this charm perfectly. Stylish, well-appointed carriages and first-class service make for the perfect blend of adventure and luxury, creating an unforgettable journey that is on many bucket lists. So, before you embark on Australia’s greatest rail journey, here’s how to get the most out of your journey on board The Ghan.

What is included?

From meals and beverages to entertainment and off-train excursions, a journey onboard the Ghan is all-inclusive so your wallet can remain tucked away – unless any souvenirs catch your eye from the gift stand! 

What are the off-train experiences?

Every trip on board The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin includes three off-train excursions. You’ll select these incredible excursions upon boarding. Venture into the historic precinct of Alice Springs, enjoy guided walks of Simpsons Gap, cruise Nitmulik Gorge and more. Adventurous travellers can even select a helicopter flight as an optional tour at additional cost. When opting for the shorter journey from Adelaide to Alice Springs, one off-train experience is included.

For many, the highlight experience takes place in the remote Outback. On the way to Darwin, The Ghan will pull into Marla station in the early hours of the morning and guests step outside to watch the sunrise over the desert with a warming coffee and bacon and egg roll. 

What are the different cabin classes?

A private retreat away from the lounge and dining carriages, Gold Twin is the standard cabin and has the comforts of home with a small ensuite. Watch the Outback pass by from your perch on a comfortable three-seater lounge or tune in to the in-cabin radio for some music and audio commentary of the journey. When you step away for the evening meal, the lounge is converted into twin-size upper and lower berths for sleeping, with ladder access to the top bunk, and then back into a lounge during breakfast the next morning. 

Solo passengers can avoid the extra cost of a single supplement by selecting Gold Single, which includes a compact sleeper/lounge cabin and full-sized shared toilet/shower facilities at the end of the carriage. 

Should I upgrade to Platinum Service?

For those looking for extra luxury, an upgrade to Platinum service is the key to enhancing your experience. Almost twice the size of the Gold cabins, platinum guests have the option to select a twin or double bed configuration, which is converted from a comfortable bed into a deluxe lounge. Alongside a full-sized ensuite stocked with Australian Appelles Apothecary toiletries, these cabins include a table, two ottomans and broad windows for unrivalled views on both sides of the train. 

Platinum service also includes arrival and departure transfers (within 60km of the station), access to the exclusive Platinum Club for an extensive food and wine selection and guests can even opt for a continental breakfast served in-cabin. 

What are the dining options? 

The social hub of the train, the Outback Explorer lounge is a carriage outfitted with comfortable lounges and tables, open from breakfast to late evening. Its well-stocked bar serves everything from barista-style coffee to a range of Australian wines, beers, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages. 

Upon checking in to their cabin, guests will find a list of all their dining times in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage. Laid out in tables of four, travellers will often be paired with other guests for a more social experience. Inspired by seasonal, locally-sourced produce and prepared by onboard chefs, a delicious meal is guaranteed; from salt-water barramundi to grilled kangaroo fillet and yellow camel curry. And remember, beverages are included so treat yourself to a perfectly paired glass of wine! Vegetarian and dietary restrictions can be accommodated, just be sure to note any requests when booking.  

Gold cabin guests enjoy breakfast, a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner. Those dining in the separate Platinum Club carriage can linger over a four-course evening meal, as well as a wider range of beverage options – anyone for a glass of Bollinger? 

How much should I pack? 

Pack light! Those in Gold cabins will find their space becomes quite restricted if travelling with full luggage sets. Luckily, you’re able to check luggage for the duration of the journey so our suggestion would be to separate what you need into a small carry-on that can be easily tucked away.

Is there a dress code?

Many luxury train journeys require formal attire for evening meals, but The Ghan prioritises comfort for travellers. Pack easy knowing that smart casual attire is recommended for all travellers, no matter the cabin grade. 

Do I need to tip?

The all-inclusive nature of The Ghan also includes tips for the attentive onboard hospitality attendants, although it’s entirely at your discretion to leave gratuities if you wish.

Can I have a forward-facing cabin?

Journey Through Australian Wine Regions Aboard the Ghan

A journey aboard the Ghan , Australia’s iconic train ride between Adelaide and Darwin, provides passengers with a means to explore the country’s vast interior in a luxurious setting. The experience offers excellent service, gourmet meals featuring regional cuisine, and off-train excursions. But a journey on the Ghan also allows guests to taste Australian wine from many of the country’s most famous wine regions.

So come aboard and join me as I sip on wines in the Ghan’s Outback Explorer lounge and pair Australian wine with delectable dishes.

Named after the Afghan cameleers who once transported supplies along this route, the train began in 1929. It is the longest passenger train in the world. Designed in Edwardian décor, the train also offers modern accommodations with ensuite bathrooms.

For many passengers, a journey aboard the Ghan fulfills a bucket list wish. Therefore, it makes sense that everyone here feels excited to board the train. And for my husband and fellow travel writer, Gary, we are equally thrilled to be here. The anticipation in the train station is palpable, so it’s fitting that our journey would kick off with a glass of crisp, delicious sparkling wine. Dozens of glasses line the table alongside two large silver, footed bowls filled with chilled bottles of bubbly. I take this as a good omen for the wine we can expect to taste once onboard the train.

The non-vintage Tahbilk Coueslant , a Chardonnay Pinot Noir sparkling wine from the Nagambie Lakes region in central Victoria, is chosen for this sendoff celebration. This wine provides a refreshing morning drink with subtle peach, melon, and ripe berry notes. Its crisp minerality and biscuit flavors follow through in the taste. We meet two sisters traveling together on the train and toast our new adventure.

Outback Explorer Lounge

To accommodate all Gold Level passengers, the train provides three restaurants, each called Queen Adelaide, and three lounges named after heroic pioneers who explored Australia. Platinum Level passengers have their exclusive restaurant and lounge.

Once onboard, the first activity involves lunch. But savvy travelers know the fun begins in the Outback Explorer Lounge. After dropping off our luggage in the cabin, we head to the lounge, the train’s social hub, for a glass of wine before our seating.

White Australian Wine

I’m fond of Margaret River wines, a lovely region on the coast of Western Australia, best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Shiraz. So naturally, my first glass of wine will be from that region. The Vasse Felix Filius 2021 , the only Chardonnay on the menu, more than meets my expectations. A modern-style Chardonnay with mouth-watering acidity, it proves well-balanced. Aromas of Granny Smith apples with hints of lemon and herbs fill the glass, complemented by a clean, bright palate and lighter, elegant fruit flavors.

Gary prefers a more crisp and lively white wine. Therefore, he orders the Serafino Goose Island Sauvignon Blanc from McLaren Vale in South Australia for his aperitif. McLaren Vale’s natural beauty, Mediterranean climate, close proximity to Adelaide, and incredible wines draw visitors to the birthplace of wine in South Australia. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache are widely planted here. But Sauvignon Blanc does well here too. The Serafino represents one of the best. The aroma is vibrant with notes of lemongrass, tropical fruit, and citrus. This bright, refreshing wine with zesty fruit flavors follows through with a crisp finish.

The Wine List

The wine list includes two sparkling wines, six white wines, one rosé, six red wines, and four fortified and sweet wines. Some of the best Australian wines are on Ghan’s specially curated wine menu. In addition to the Margaret River, choices include wines from the world-acclaimed Barossa Valley and the famous Hunter Valley north of Sydney in New South Wales. Wines from the Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, and Eden Valley, all in South Australia, are also well represented. With just two nights and three days onboard the train, it’s going to be a challenge to try them all!

Hentley Farm Villian and Vixen Shiraz

Today’s lunch menu offers a choice of three starters, three main courses, and three desserts. Having travelled previously on the Indian Pacific train, another Journey Beyond luxury train ride in Australia, I anticipate the meals will be outstanding.

For lunch, I ordered the roasted chicken ballotine served on a pumpkin purée with steamed greens and fresh herb salsa. When in Australia, one must try the Shiraz, the Australian name for Syrah. Australian Shiraz wines tend to be lush and fruit-forward.

To pair with my lunch, I select the Hentley Farm Villian and Vixen Shiraz , a wine from the Barossa Valley. Barossa, one of Australia’s largest and most well-known wine-producing regions, is less than an hour’s drive northeast of Adelaide. The region is best known for red wine. The top varieties grown include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache.

The Villian and Vixen Shiraz sports an unusual label. A bearded man appears on one side (the villain) and a young woman (the vixen) on the opposite, but it belies the elegance of this well-balanced wine. Its notes of plum, peppercorn, raspberries, and soft, even tannins pair beautifully with the dish’s pumpkin flavors, a common ingredient in Australian dishes.

Tim Smith Wines MGS

Australia’s population consists of just 26 million people. But the number of sheep in the country is four times that, currently estimated at 104 million. So, it’s no wonder that roast lamb rump is a popular dish in this country. Feeling like a local, I ordered lamb for my dinner the first night onboard. Our server recommends a glass of the Tim Smith Wines red blend to pair with the lamb, and I’m mighty pleased that I did.

The MGS 2021 , a blend of Mataro, Grenache, and Shiraz, is a Rhone-style wine from the Barossa Valley. A light twist on the classic GSM blend, the Mataro, aka Mourvedre, is the dominant variety. Even as young as this 2021 vintage was, the wine tasted luxurious and well-structured. This particular wine turned out to be so popular with guests on the train that by Day Two, it was gone!

Stage Door Front and Centre Shiraz

Buffalo was introduced into Australia from eastern Indonesia in the 1800s. Now about 30,000 domesticated buffalo are raised for meat in the Northern Territory. My choice for lunch today is fragrant Massaman-style buffalo curry. Served with jasmine rice and roti bread, this dish should pair nicely with another Shiraz. I order a Stage Door Front and Centre Shiraz 2016 out of Barossa Valley for this meal. Crimson red with cherry liqueur on the nose with chewy dark fruits on the palate, this wine pairs perfectly with the flavors of coconut, cinnamon, and sweet anise in the dish.

Black Duck Cabernet

With twice as many million kangaroos in Australia than people, it’s also no surprise that grilled kangaroo shows up on the next day’s dinner menu.

Leaner than beef, kangaroo has a bold, earthy taste. Served with a sweet corn puree, pickled cucumber salad, and a rosella flower chutney, the dish calls for a Cabernet Sauvignon. I choose the Black Duck Cabernet 2021 out of McLaren Vale to pair with the meal. This wine displays mild spice with hints of fresh fruit, pepper, and chocolate and complements the mild gamey hint of kangaroo meat.

Eldredge Sangiovese “Kitty” Rosé

After lunch on our last day aboard the Ghan, I find myself back in the Outback Explorer Lounge. Rosé feels like the perfect afternoon wine. Therefore, I order the Eldrege Sangiovese “Kitty” Rosé to enjoy as I relish my last few precious hours of the journey. The wine hails from the Clare Valley, another South Australia wine region about two hours north of Adelaide. This fertile wine region, best known for its Riesling, is also one of Australia’s oldest wine regions.

The wine’s cherry, berry, and plum flavors provide an initial sweetness that follows through with a crisp, dry finish. Its cheery pink color and bright acidity make a delightful afternoon sipper to enjoy as I gaze out the panoramic windows for one last time. And the Ghan slides into the Darwin station.

A Journey Through Australian Wine Regions

The journey proves to be a remarkable one with plenty of vivid scenery. Traveling past the rusty hues of the Red Center to the tropical splendor of the Top End, I’ve also imagined visiting many of the wine regions in Australia. From Hunter Valley on the East Coast to the Barossa Valley in the south to the Margaret River on the West Coast, it’s been a delightful introduction to Australian wine. So, the next time you find yourself in Australia, consider a journey aboard the Ghan. It’s a great way to sample Australian wine alongside regional gourmet food while exploring the vast outback in the “Land Down Under.”

20 years on, passengers on Australia’s legendary Ghan train greeted by naked bums again

On March 12, many moons rose near the Australian city of Darwin.

If you think it was a once-in-a-lifetime celestial happening, you are mistaken.

Hundreds of young and old flashers had turned up by the tracks at Livingstone, about 40km south-east of Darwin, on a cloudy day to bare their behinds at a train called The Ghan.

The flashers included some children who were not born when the first mooning happened, and babies who had their buttocks bared by their parents.

It was a unique way of greeting the train that was arriving in Darwin in the Northern Territories from the southern city of Adelaide, a 2,978km journey that can take up to 53 hours including tourist stops.

The train’s name is an abbreviation of its original moniker The Afghan Express – so named in tribute to the Afghan camel drivers who helped build the first stretches of the line in the 19th century.

The posterior-flashing practice first took place in February 2004, and then again 10 years later. It started as a good-natured gesture to welcome the train’s first run, according to locals.

“We have dinner parties on car trailers and silly things like that. And (someone) said, ‘We should moon the Ghan when it comes through,’” an unofficial local representative, Ms Michelle Salmon, told NT News in 2014.

Other flashers on March 12 were from a group calling itself the Noonamah Moonies, comprising locals who were part of the original mooners in 2004 and had returned for the now once-a-decade ritual while repeating the mantra to “get your backside trackside”.

For the mooning’s 20th anniversary, signs and posters inviting people to join the party “Mooning the Ghan” were placed near the train tracks.

Gallivanting locals showed up with beers in hand, ready to catch what some dubbed “full moon fever”.

“It’s not a bad day to flash your bum,” one mooner told Australia’s ABC News.

As the train approached the Livingstone Airstrip, horns blaring, the flashers lined up disorderly and dropped their pants for what appeared to be the 20-odd seconds it took for Australia’s longest passenger train to drive past them.

Former Australian prime minister John Howard was on board the first Ghan train in 2004, after the line was extended from Alice Springs to facilitate travel and freight transport from coast to coast.

It is not clear if he witnessed the buttocks lining up to greet the train.
