Tour the Wineries Around Asheville North Carolina

Point Lookout Vineyards

Home to a number of signature North Carolina attractions, Asheville is one of the top tourist destinations of the country. For good reason too! Asheville hosts so many popular and well known destinations and is also the gateway to countless attractions in the surrounding areas. Included in this region are a number of high quality wineries that have woven themselves into the existing natural beauty of North Carolina. These are stunning places to visit and experience but if you want a winery/vineyard experience, you will need to get out of the city. Most of the wineries with vineyards attached are going to be about 45-50 minutes outside the city limits. There are, however, some great urban wineries and tasting rooms inside the city if you don’t have the time for a longer tour of the vineyards outside the city.

One of the best ways to visit the wineries around Asheville is to hire a professional tour company for safe, comfortable, and reliable transportation to all of the wineries you wish to visit.  Why burden yourself with the risk of driving while visiting wineries when you can have someone else do it for you. Asheville Wine Tours  is operated by  Van in Black  which is the premier local transportation service providing winery tours of the area.  Climb aboard our luxury SUV’s or large Euro-style vans and let our professional guides show you everything this wonderful area has to offer.   You will absolutely love the experience!

Asheville Wine Tours has certified wine experts on staff (WSET and CMS) and has access to elevated experiences at the wineries that nobody else can offer. The vehicles we use for our driving tours are also best in class Mercedes-Benz vans and SUVs that will provide the highest level of comfort. All of our tours are custom for each group and we provide door-to-door service. A booking with us is guaranteed and we will not cancel the day of your tour due to lack of participation. Experience the difference that all of these factors make and book your Asheville Wine Tour with the best provider in the region.

Best Wineries in Asheville to Visit (Updated 2024)

The best wineries near Asheville NC

Best Asheville Wineries & Wine Tours for Unique Wine Tasting Experiences in 2024

North Carolina is proud to be “first in flight.” This slogan, relating to airplane inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright who famously flew the first airplane in the state, is displayed on car license plates across the state.

It’s much less famous for flights of wine. You might therefore be surprised to learn that the state is home to over 200 wineries, which collectively produce over 1.1 million cases of wine – or 13 million bottles – every year. This ranks the state as eleventh in US wine production.

The greatest number of wineries are located in the Yadkin Valley in the north, but visitors to the pretty city of Asheville have plenty of winery choices, too. Several of these offer dining options, making them a good option for an afternoon off of hiking.

The best-known winery in the region is at the Biltmore Estate , which says it hosts more guests than any other winery in the USA. (All visitors to the estate are included in the count, regardless of their interest in the winery.) For those who don’t want to pay the $84 entrance fee to the estate, there are plenty of other options. Here, we discuss some of the best wineries near Asheville that are well worth a visit.

Wineries near Asheville North Carolina

Best Wineries to Visit Near Asheville, NC

736 Green Mountain Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28792

(828) 551-5643

When you arrive at Stone Ashe , the first thing you notice is the rows of vines climbing up the steep mountain slope. This is a sign of ambition at a winery – vineyards like this aren’t easy to manage and can only be worked by hand. The pay-off is high-quality fruit.

The focus at Stone Ashe is on French varieties, and the fruity Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, shouldn’t be missed. Tasting flights are available for $15 per person, which you can enjoy in the winery’s rustic tasting room. Inside, you can relax on sofas and armchairs. Deckchairs outside offer views over the vineyards and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Stone Ashe is a relative newcomer to the North Carolina winery scene. The tasting room opened in early 2020 but will surely be enjoyed by guests for years to come. It is open Thursday-Sunday, 12-6 pm.

Marked Tree

623 Deep Gap Rd, Flat Rock, NC 28731

(828) 513-3773

Marked Tree is another newcomer in 2020. It is producing a diverse range of different wines, including Gruner Veltliner, Petit Verdot, and a full-bodied rosé blend of Cabernet Franc and Lemberger (aka Blaufränkisch). Its fragrant red Cabernet Franc, however, is a particular highlight.

You can taste all of these at Marked Tree’s modern (and very Instagram-friendly) tasting room. Cheese plates and other snacks are also available. It’s surrounded by vineyards, meaning the views from its spacious terrace are good, too.

The winery also offers yoga classes (Thursdays and Saturdays) and forest therapy walks (Sundays and Wednesdays by appointment).

Saint Paul Vineyards

588 Chestnut Gap Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28792

(828) 685-4002

Saint Paul Vineyards successfully combines wine tasting with entertainment. It produces a range of red, white, and rosé wine, as well as cider and fruit wine, which you can enjoy at its relaxed farmyard tasting room. The Viognier is particularly fresh, aromatic, and weighty.

It has plenty of outside seating next to the vines, and regularly hosts live musicians and food trucks.

Plēb Urban Winery

289 Lyman St, Asheville, NC 28801

(828) 774-5062

Adventurous natural wine lovers, this one is for you. Plēb sources grapes from around North Carolina and turns them into wines with personality at its converted warehouse. It works with 26 different grape varieties, including several that you may not have heard of before. Catawba, Aromella, or Maréchal Foch, anyone? Production is also far from conventional. One Seyval Blanc, for example, spends 558 days on lees before bottling, giving it a nutty, wet wool character. This rebellious winery is close to Downtown Asheville. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday, 2-8 pm.

Asheville Wine Tours, Hiking & Fun Activities

Beyond visiting Asheville wineries in wine country proper, there are plenty of ways to experience the magic of Asheville beyond wine tasting in the vineyards. Below, we’ve included several of our favorite guided options that include visits to the vineyards, but also locally guided tours of Asheville where you can taste wine, craft beer, go hiking or biking, depending on your travel preferences.

Downtown Asheville Tip-Based Sightseeing Walking Tour

Chimney Rock State Park is 45 minutes out of town, roughly in the same direction as Stone Ashe, Marked Tree and Saint Paul Wineries. The park offers a number of well-maintained trails with no shortage of impressive mountain views. It would be easy to combine a morning of hiking in the park with an afternoon tasting in the wineries.

There are plenty of Blue Ridge Mountain trails to choose from. The Craggy Pinnacle Trail is one short but rewarding walk with various viewpoints.

Zen Tubing offers lazy river-style tubing in Asheville. Pack drinks and snacks to enjoy on the way.

Further Afield

There are a handful of wineries dotted along the Blue Ridge mountains. If you decide to tackle the challenging Grandfather Mountain Trail, you might need a glass of wine afterward. Good news, Linville Falls Winery is just 20 minutes down the road. It offers several fruity wines in flights, or by the glass or bottle. Also nearby are the gentle Linville Falls trails with views over the waterfall.

On the other side of Grandfather Mountain is Banner Elk Winery , which offers tastings at its pretty lakeside winery. For another unique region and wine tasting experience, consider visiting some of the wineries located in the Tryon Foothills of North Carolina.

Book Your Asheville Wine Tour!

Asheville is the gateway to many signature North Carolina activities, sights, and destinations. A few big examples of this include the Biltmore Estate, Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. As a top tourist destination in the USA, Asheville has a lot to offer and the wineries in and around the city are no exception. The vineyards outside the city are beautiful places that blend together many things Western North Carolina has a reputation for: natural scenery, agriculture and hospitality. The urban wineries and tasting rooms inside the city leverage the vibe of the city to offer their products in a different atmosphere; they may not have mountain scenery, like when you get outside the city , but they definitely have that mountain vibe and seamlessly blend into the cityscape of downtown Asheville.

Parker-Binns Vineyard

With 20+ wine interest destinations to choose from, a wine tour from the Asheville region never disappoints. You can even take multi-day trips and explore 3-4 wineries each day without repeating any wineries. Our wine tours are all custom and can include a WSET or Court of Master Sommelier certified wine expert to accompany you on your trip. We work with you to come up with a great itinerary for your day out and provide door-to-door service on all of our wine tours. Book your tour today and see why Van in Black is the highest rated tour/transportation company in the region.

The Asheville Wineries…

As with all of our wine tours, our tours are custom for each group. An Asheville wine tour with us can include any combination of the vineyards listed below and we are more than happy to suggest an itinerary for your booking.

  • Parker-Binns Vineyards
  • Mountain Brook Vineyards
  • Russian Chapel-Hills Vineyards
  • Silver Fork Winery
  • Marked Tree Vineyard
  • The Biltmore Estate
  • Plēb Urban Winery
  • Addison Farms Vineyard
  • Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards
  • Burntshirt Vineyards
  • Point Lookout Vineyards
  • South Creek Winery
  • Stone Ashe Vineyard

There are also a number of tasting rooms and wine shops in Asheville that make for a great stop, here are just a few:

  • 5 Walnut Wine Bar
  • WALLS Wine Bar
  • Marked Tree Tasting Room (downtown)
  • The Montford Rooftop Bar
  • Botanist and Barrel
  • Bottle Riot
  • Leo’s House of Thirst
  • The Aventine

There are even a few cideries in and around the city to check out (remember: All cider is wine but not all wine is cider!)

  • Noble Cider and Mead Taproom
  • Barn Door Ciderworks
  • Urban Orchard Cider Co.
  • TreeRock Social
  • Appalachian Ridge Cidery

Bold Rock

And don’t even get us started on breweries (that is a whole separate section unto itself!)…

A Typical Wine Tour…

Most wine tours will visit 3 wineries and last about 6 hours (or longer). Since the tour is custom for your group, nobody from Van in Black is going to tell you “time’s up!” when you are at a particular winery. You are free to enjoy the day however you want and linger however long you want at each vineyard. We book our vehicles by the hour and after securing your vehicle with a 4 hour deposit (our hourly minimum), you settle up with your driver after the tour for anything used beyond the initial 4 hours.

A few things to note about wine tours departing from Asheville:

  • Most of the wineries with vineyards are about 45-50 minutes outside the city. There are urban options available but if you want to go to vineyards then you have to get out of the city.
  • We tend to recommend areas where there are clusters of wineries close together and these are to the south of Asheville (Hendersonville and Tryon).
  • Most of the wines available in and around Asheville are going to be dry European (vinifera) style wines. There are a few wineries that have some sweet wines available but there typically isn’t a lot of sweet wine available in this region.
  • Food options are available at some of the wineries via either food trucks (weekends) or established kitchens. We can help with this when planning your itinerary.

All that is left is for you to book your Asheville Wine Tour and enjoy the day!
