What to pack for a winter cruise in the Caribbean

You have your suitcase open and ready to be packed but it’s below freezing outside…what weather should you expect on a Caribbean cruise in the winter?  What should you wear?  What should you pack for a Caribbean Cruise in the winter? 

Below are our top recommendations for what to wear and pack on a Caribbean Cruise during the winter.

Pants and maybe a jacket 

That’s not what you wanted to hear, is it? It can still be cold on embarkation day.  Of course, it depends on your port but you may still need some light winter clothes.  Charleston can still be frigid in winter, but the further south you go the warmer it will be.  By the time you make it down to the port of Miami, you can probably lose the jacket.  

But as someone who has lived in the South for a long time…the only predictable thing about winter in the South is that it is unpredictable.  Bring a jacket.  

Shorts and t-shirts 

By the time you wake up in the Caribbean you should be able to get rid of the winter clothes.  It can still be windy in the Bahamas in the winter, but not necessarily cold.  You are going to want some shorts and t-shirts to wear! 

Sunscreen 

When it is not hot, we can sometimes forget to properly apply the sunscreen.  Think about how many winter clothes you will have to wear over that sunburn when you get back home.  Pack and wear your sunscreen.  If you plan to snorkel or do anything in the water don’t forget your reef safe sunscreen !

Bathing Suit 

The outdoor pool might be too cold, but there are always hot tubs!  Many cruise lines have heated indoor pools (sometimes adults only) that make a great place to hang out in the winter.  The beaches of the Caribbean and the Bahamas can be warm enough for a beach day.  

Some of the best beach days we have ever spent in the Caribbean have been in the winter because it’s not hot! 

Bathing Suit Coverup

Because you might have to walk from somewhere warm across somewhere cold to get back to your room. 

Hat or Windbreaker 

The Bahamas can get very windy in the winter months so a hat or windbreaker is an important thing to pack for that Caribbean Cruise! 

Something for formal night

Remember ladies – it can be sleeveless because it is likely going to be warm wherever you are on formal night! 

Sandals / Flip flops 

The last thing you want to wear with your bathing suit is shoes with socks.  Don’t forget the sandals and flip flops.  You are going to the beach after all.  (But also remember you might want closed toed shoes too because some of the fun experiences on board cruise ships require closed toed shoes.) 

Other traditional cruise items

Don’t forget those normal things you pack for a summer cruise.  Just because it’s winter does not mean you won’t need your reusable water bottle, insulated cup, chair clips, metal straws and sunglasses.  These are must-haves to any cruise regardless of the weather!  

Packing for a winter cruise in the Caribbean is not so different than packing for a summer one.  It’s mostly that first and last day you have to worry about some colder weather.  And then you have to make sure you don’t forget your normal cruise items that would be obvious in the summer, but you might forget in the winter!

Essentials to Pack for a Cruise

Packing for any trip takes some planning, but cruise vacations present a unique challenge – particularly due to limited stateroom storage space and sparse (or overpriced) options for purchasing accidentally forgotten items.

To help you decide what to pack for a cruise, we've curated a list of essentials recommended by cruise experts who regularly sail the high seas. Find your perfect cruise

Carry-on bag

Regardless of whether you bring checked luggage, you'll need some type of carry-on bag . Since checked bags need to go through security as they do at airports – and because you may need to wait for your stateroom to be ready, just like at a hotel – you'll want to be able to access any necessities pre-cruise. These might include a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the pools; medications; a bottle of water; and your smartphone, of course. You'll also want to keep your credit card , passport, and any other important documentation or valuables close by. A carry-on backpack works especially well since it can double as a day bag for shore excursions.

Checked bag

While you'll likely want to bring a checked bag, consider sharing one with your ship mate(s) to maximize stateroom storage space. Or, consider bringing medium-sized luggage, such as the The Medium by Away , for checking in.

Garment bag

While many cruises are less formal these days, a garment bag can still be handy for keeping select garments wrinkle-free (since clothing irons are prohibited on cruise ships). Top-rated options include the The Garment Duffel by Halfday and the Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag , both of which double as traditional luggage. If you pack your luggage right, you can make this your only suitcase, in addition to a carry-on bag.

Packing cubes or vacuum-sealed bags

Packing cubes are one of the best ways to organize your belongings for travel – especially in a tight cruise ship cabin. Top-rated options include the Veken packing cubes on Amazon (usually priced around $20) and all of the Pack-It Sets by Eagle Creek. The Pack-It Starter Set is especially ideal for cruising since it includes a garment folder designed to minimize wrinkles in clothing. Some cruisers also swear by vacuum-sealed bags , even though they can be a bit more tedious to pack.

Carry-on caddy

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer at The Points Guy, recommends a carry-on caddy , particularly if you're flying to your embarkation point. "I have a fabric sleeve that slides down over the telescoping handle on my carry-on to provide pockets for my passport, phone, coffee – all the things I used to have to juggle during check-in."

Digital luggage scale

The compact Etekcity scale – approximately $10 on Amazon – can weigh bags up to 110 pounds and help you avoid overweight baggage fees.

Bungee cord

"Especially for travelling with the family, I use a bright-green bungee cord to strap multiple pieces of luggage together," says Aaron Saunders, senior editor at Cruise Critic. "It's a lifesaver when boarding trains or disembarking ships, particularly when you ' re maneuvering a stroller and a little one around, too."

A luggage tracker isn't just useful for air travel. Attach one to your checked cruise luggage to see when it has arrived in your stateroom (or if it's stalled at security). Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic, doesn't go anywhere without her Apple AirTag after her luggage got stuck in Vancouver for over a week last June. "My AirTag use has expanded beyond my checked luggage, too. I also have AirTags in my handbag, my carry-on, my keychain and my wallet."

Cruise insurance

Due to the unpredictable nature of travel, cruise insurance can be a wise purchase ahead of your voyage. Travel policies can cover unforeseen expenses such as trip interruptions and medical emergencies.

While a passport is often required for cruising, rules can vary depending where you're traveling. Determine whether you need a passport for your upcoming cruise ; if you do, triple-check that you have it packed the day of departure.

Credit cards and local currency

When cruising internationally, consider getting small amounts of each country's currency to have on hand in port. Depending where you go, some local markets may only accept their own country's currency, not U.S. dollars or credit cards. It's also nice to leave cash gratuities for cab drivers, tour guides or servers; in the European Union, 1- and 2-euro coins are convenient and appropriate tips. In ports with vendors that do accept credit cards, be sure to carry a Visa or Mastercard , as some shops and restaurants do not take American Express .

RFID wallet

It's important to protect your travel documents with an RFID wallet like the TIGARI Passport Holder or the ZOPPEN RFID Travel Passport Wallet , the latter of which can hold multiple passports for a family. "Thieves and hackers can steal your credit card information just by using skimming devices," explains Jill Schildhouse, a cruise expert and U.S. News contributor who always travels with her RFID wallet. "And because your wallet wasn't even touched, you won't know it happened until you see your credit card statement."

Medications

Pack more than enough of your prescription medications as well as any over-the-counter medicines you'll need, just in case you encounter an itinerary change or travel delay. While some travelers find it easiest to bring personal medicines in their prescription bottles, others find travel pill boxes to be especially helpful for organization. The Sukuos Weekly Pill Organizer is a well-rated option, with detachable boxes for each day as well as compartments for morning and evening medications.

Sheet masks

Since flying can be so drying for the skin, Faust likes to use sheet masks. "My first step the night before I board (because you should always fly in a day early) is to hydrate with a sheet mask (usually from a Korean brand like Ballon Blanc or FaceTory )," she says. "If I'm meeting up with a friend, I bring an extra sheet mask so our trip starts out feeling a bit like a spa day!"

Magnetic hooks

A surprising fact: Cruise ship cabin walls are made of metal, which means you can optimize your storage space by hanging some of your belongings on magnetic wall hooks. The hooks are perfect for holding bulky coats or boots if you're traveling to a colder climate. You can also use them for wet gear on expedition ships and adventure cruises, or for drying out bathing suits after days at the beach or pool. Purchase a set of magnetic hooks for less than $10 on Amazon .

Like hotels, cruise ships can only provide so many hangers. Bring a few extras from home or pick up a pack from your local dollar store. You might also try packable hangers .

Wrinkle release spray

Whether or not you bring a garment bag, a travel-size bottle of wrinkle release spray, such as Downy Wrinkle Releaser spray , is useful to have on board. If you combine a spritz or two with the steam from your shower, you should be able to smooth out some of the wrinkles in your clothing.

Laundry detergent

"If you don't want to pay for laundry service or spend precious time in the self-service laundry room, bring a small bottle of laundry detergent like Woolite to wash key items in the sink: underwear, bras, quick-dry hiking shorts, bathing suits, etc.," recommends Schildhouse. "Every cruise ship shower has a retractable clothesline you can extend to drape the clothes over while they dry. This can also help cut down on the number of items you need to pack."

Over-the-door organizers

Over-the-door organizers with clear or mesh pockets allow you to find your feminine hygiene products, makeup, jewelry and other small items quickly – without having to hunt through multiple drawers or a tight stateroom closet. It's a good idea to purchase a two-pack like this option by Simple Houseware Store (available on Amazon), since you can also use one to store shoes and maximize floor space.

It goes without saying, but to say it anyway: A toilet spray like Poo-Pourri is a must for your cruise packing list. Any smell – pleasant or not – will travel quickly in small staterooms with small bathrooms. Buy a travel-size bottle to keep in your cabin.

Shampoo and conditioner

Cruise experts agree it's best to bring your own shampoo and conditioner in travel-size bottles, as most cruise ships don't provide separate shampoo and conditioner anymore; instead, they offer all-in-one dispensers. Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, likes to pack her shampoo and conditioner in the popular Cadence Capsules , noting she also uses them for another essential: sunscreen. "These capsules are easy to fill, never leak and have clear labels, which you can customize," she says.

Wine or Champagne

Most major cruise lines allow each guest to bring one to two bottles of wine or Champagne on board, while some luxury cruise lines allow even more than that. Disney Cruise Line also gives guests the option to bring a six-pack of beer instead of wine or Champagne. Be sure to consult your cruise line's policies when packing for your trip.

If you plan to bring wine or Champagne, you'll likely need a corkscrew . While some cruise lines may prohibit corkscrews, others allow them onboard; check your cruise line's policy before sailing. Bringing wine with a twistable cap may be a good alternative.

Portable humidifier

Cruise ship cabins can feel dry – especially in the colder months. A portable humidifier like the GENIANI Erie (around $25 on Amazon) can provide some relief. At about half a pound, this USB-powered device will fit neatly into your checked bag or carry-on luggage. The travel humidifier features two mist settings and has an automatic shut-off option, plus a night light to help you see around your cabin in the dark.

International travel adapter or converter

You'll likely need a travel adapter, since cruise lines homeported in international locales may have different electrical sockets and voltage strengths than you're used to in the U.S.

McDaniel recommends the OneWorld65 Travel Adapter . "I've used a lot of different travel adapters over the years, but this is my favorite. It charges up to six devices at once, has USB and mini-USB options, and works in over 200 countries," she says. "While many cruise ships have U.S. outlets, most usually also have European outlets. This adapter lets me take advantage of that outlet I'd otherwise ignore." She also notes that while cruise lines are getting better about having more outlets on their ships, it never feels like enough to keep your phone, camera battery, tablet, watch, headphones/earbuds and laptop charged (times two or more if you're traveling with others).

Sound machine

Cruise experts agree a sound machine can be helpful for blocking out the sound of late-night partiers returning to their staterooms (or your snoring spouse). Schildhouse likes the LectroFan Micro 2 for cruising. "It plays non-looping white noise and doubles as a speaker to play tunes while you get ready for dinner."

Tech organizer

A tech organizer like the BAGSMART electronics organizer case – available on Amazon for about $20 – can store all your cables, plugs, SD cards and earphones in one zippered, compact bag that will fit easily in your carry-on luggage. Despite its small size, it can also hold bulkier items like a small laptop charging cord.

First-aid kit

A first-aid kit is a good thing to have on hand no matter where you go. You can make your own using supplies you already have at home, or buy a premade first-aid kit on Amazon for about $20. While all cruise ships have medical facilities, it's useful to have these items with you on shore excursions, especially those involving active adventures.

Hand sanitizer

Regularly washing your hands and/or using hand sanitizer is essential to staying healthy while traveling, especially on a cruise ship. Stock up on a few travel-size bottles of hand sanitizer (less than $2 each at Walmart) ahead of your trip. If you're looking for something with less alcohol that's also less drying, check out Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer .

If you're a parent, you know that your infant or toddler needs a very specific size – and in some cases brand – of diapers, which may very well be unavailable to you on your cruise ship or in the ports of call. Bring more than enough diapers to play it safe at sea.

Most cruise lines also require that non-toilet-trained infants and toddlers wear swim diapers in the children's water play areas. For the sake of sanitation, kids must be toilet-trained to use the pools on cruise ships.

Many cruisers like to personalize their cabin with stateroom door decor. Not only is it a fun tradition, but decorating the door can make it easier to locate your room, too. You can find lots of fun decor ideas on Pinterest as well as Amazon.

" Duct tape is a life-saver in many situations," says Kosciolek. "I primarily use it to attach my printed luggage tags, but it's also great for mending clothing issues on the fly and fixing broken luggage until you can get it back home."

"As a parent, I like to bring lanyards with sleeves so my kids can wear their keycards and not lose them," says Erica Silverstein, senior cruise editor at The Points Guy. "We hang them on the magnetic hooks I put on the wall, so they don't get lost in the cabin either."

If you're prone to (or think you may be prone to) motion sickness on cruise ships, put a pair of Sea-Bands on your cruise packing list. These soft wristbands use acupressure to prevent and minimize nausea and vomiting on board, and they are a reusable, drug-free alternative to traditional anti-nausea medications. You can purchase Sea-Bands on Amazon or at most drugstores.

If you need something a bit stronger than Sea-Bands (or to use in conjunction with them), Dramamine remains a tried-and-true solution for both preventing and treating sea sickness. Choose the Less Drowsy formula to avoid getting sleepy, and consider the chewable tablets (dye-free) if traveling with kids who are prone to queasiness. Many travelers like Bonine as a remedy for sea sickness as well.

Mix-and-match clothing

Pack a variety of mix-and-match items, also known as a capsule wardrobe, for your cruise. To do this, choose a base color – black or navy blue – for your wardrobe. Next, pack plain, neutral-colored items, then add a few patterned items to the mix. Remember to include a variety of styles (T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, rompers and jumpsuits) and also consider reversible clothing and outfits that can easily transition from day to night.

Sports jacket or blazer

Adam Coulter, executive editor of Cruise Critic UK & Australia, recommends packing a sports jacket or blazer. "While cruise lines are getting more casual, what happens if you get that last-minute invite to meet the captain, or there's a meet and mingle where you want to look put together? A jacket will always elevate your elegance (even if you're wearing a T-shirt underneath)," he says. If you're in need of a travel blazer, Bluffworks has some well-rated options; the Gramercy , in particular, gets great reviews.

Themed party attire

Some cruise lines host themed voyages or parties on select nights where passengers can dress up to participate in the fun. You'll want to review your cruise itinerary before you go so you're prepared for the festivities. Bring your buccaneer gear if you're sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line; ships host fun events like Pirate Nights, pirate-themed dinners and a "Pirates in the Caribbean" show. On "The Love Boat"-themed cruises offered by Princess Cruises , pack your platform boots, glittery dresses, bell-bottom pants and halter tops for the line's 1970s-inspired disco party on the deck. No matter the theme, you can't go wrong with a couple of captain hats .

Travel wrap

A travel wrap is a versatile accessory that's useful for any trip – even more so on a cruise ship where it can get chilly when the sea breeze picks up. Available in nearly 10 different colors, J.Crew's Oversized Cashmere Wrap is a timeless staple, albeit a bit of an investment; for something less expensive but well rated, try this off-brand pashmina shawl on Amazon .

Packable jacket

If you're cruising to a cold weather destination such as Alaska, you'll need something heavier than a travel wrap, but not so bulky that it requires additional luggage. Consider a packable jacket that folds easily and compactly; travel experts highly recommend the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket .

Packable hat

If you're headed to the Caribbean or another warm weather destination, you'll want a beach hat to protect your scalp and face from the sun. This packable straw hat by FURTALK (available on Amazon for about $25) is a stylish women's option that features a broader brim and offers UPF 50 sun protection.

Comfortable walking shoes

Even if you never step foot off the ship, there is still plenty of walking to do between bow and stern. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are safer than flimsy flip-flops when boarding a slippery tender into port (if your ship can't dock directly). Water shoes

Depending on your scheduled shore excursions, you might also need a pair of water shoes. For something that's both functional and fashionable, Crocs' Classic Clogs are a good option. While not totally waterproof, the Native Jefferson is a water-friendly, versatile option.

Versatile heels

"Over the years, I've learned that the key to avoiding overpacking is to bring one neutral pair of low heels that match every single eveningwear outfit I've packed – from flowy pants to dresses," says Schildhouse, who loves her Rockport Tabitha 2-Strap Heeled Sandals . "They have a cushioned footbed and shock-absorbing heel so you can dance the night away in the club, and a 3-inch block heel with traction to keep you steady on your feet even if the ship's rocking a bit."

Reusable water bottle

A reusable water bottle is useful for filling up at water and beverage stations on your cruise ship; it's also a necessity for shore excursions.

Bathing suit

Pack a couple of swimsuits for the pools, hot tubs and any shore excursions.

Swim cover-up

Another must-have for your cruise packing list is a swimsuit cover-up or two. These are great for wearing over your bathing suit during days at sea, as well as on excursions – especially if you're going on a Caribbean cruise . Amazon sells a variety of stylish, affordable cover-ups, and you can never go wrong with a classic white button-down shirt .

Dry bags are useful for shore excursions where you're likely to get wet but don't want the same to be true for your phone, camera and other precious items. "I use the Outdoor Research Unisex Dry Isolation Pack   and have never had so much as a drop of moisture enter it, which is important for me – it keeps my cameras, documents and important items from getting wet," says Saunders, adding that it functions as a great everyday backpack when it's not raining.

If you need more than one dry bag, cruise expert Brittany Chrusciel recommends the Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag Set . "Having these dry bags, in a variety of sizes, means I can bring all my gear along during a Zodiac cruise or snorkeling excursion without having to worry about it getting wet."

Waterproof phone case

A waterproof phone case is also essential, especially if you plan to take photos. The Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouches (available in a two-pack) come with a lanyard so you can both protect your phone and wear it around your neck. They are compatible with most smartphones.

"I like to bring collapsible pails, small shovels , inflatable beach toys, a floppy Frisbee or other things to entertain the kids on the beach if we're going to a private island or beach destination," says Silverstein. "If you can inflate your own inner tube, you don't need to rent a floating mat."

Beach towel

"Although cruise lines provide guests with towels to take off the ship on excursions, they are often bulky and sometimes small," explains Chrusciel. "The Surfer Towel folds up to nearly nothing, so it takes up almost no room in your suitcase and is super convenient to pack in a day bag. What's more, its quick-drying technology means that the lightweight fabric won't be soaking wet when you need to pack up for the day and head back to the ship."

Towel clips

"Even though giant plastic towel clips shaped like a flamingo are a bit cringey, they make it easy to find your spot in a sea of sun loungers," says Chrusciel. "They also solve a common cruise problem: keeping your towel securely fixed to your chair while reading or sunbathing."

Reef-safe sunscreen

When choosing a sunscreen, look for something that's reef-safe; not only are these sunscreens safer for the environment, but they're also better for you . The active ingredients in reef-safe sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of both. Top-rated mineral sunscreen brands include Think , Badger and Raw Elements , all of which also sell lip balm with sunscreen (another essential at sea).

After-sun lotion

You'll want an extra dose of moisturizer if you've been basking in the sun. COOLA makes an after-sun body lotion that cools and hydrates the skin with aloe vera, agave and lavender oil. Previous buyers rave about this lotion, noting they appreciate that the scent isn't overpowering.

A good book

Sea days are the perfect time to kick back and relax with a book you've been meaning to read. Find an oceanfront lounge chair in a shaded area on the pool deck, or grab a cup of tea and settle into a quiet nook indoors. There's no need to pack more than one book, however, as many cruise ships have libraries.

What not to pack for a cruise

Power strip.

Many cruise lines do not permit power strips as they present a fire hazard, while others allow them as long as they are non-surge-protected. Instead of a power strip, purchase a portable charger such as this highly rated one by Anker , which can power up multiple devices at once. This can be especially useful for shore excursions. When packing for your cruise, also think about your luggage: If it has an included charging port, you may not even need to purchase an additional charging block.

Weapons and restraints

Firearms, handcuffs and the like are not permitted on cruise ships. This rule also includes toy guns on most cruise lines.

While most major cruise lines allow guests to pack a limited amount of wine or Champagne per person, they do not permit hard liquor. Of course, those of age can purchase cocktails at any of the bars on board.

Household appliances

Irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships, which is why the aforementioned garment bags, wrinkle release spray and packing cubes are recommended for keeping clothing tidy and neat. Coffee makers and mug warmers are also prohibited.

While you can technically bring you own, it's not necessary as hairdryers are available in every bathroom on most ships.

CBD and marijuana

CBD that's derived from hemp and contains 0.3% THC or less is legal at a federal level. However, each state interprets and enforces this law differently; for example, many states require a prescription for it. Due to the ambiguity of the laws, most cruise lines continue to ban CBD in any form.

Marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law, which means you cannot bring it on a cruise ship – even if you're legally able to purchase it in your home state for recreational or medical use.

What clothing, shoes, and accessories do I need to pack for a cruise?

A cruise vacation covers a lot of ground, which means you’ll need a lot of flexibility with your wardrobe, too. You can generally count on transitioning from daywear to smart casual on one or two nights per cruise and Evening Chic aboard the ship.

Undergarments & Sleepwear

Start off with the basics. As for any trip, don’t leave home without your underwear, socks (both athletic and dress socks), and bras/undershirts as the base for any day’s dress. You’ll want comfy pajamas to cozy up in after a long day spent exploring in port, too.

Casual Daywear

For laid-back days spent walking around the ship or port, you’ll want to have a good selection of comfortable and casual clothing.

Check the weather, and stick to a cruise packing list with a good selection of shorts, jeans/khakis, sundresses/skirts, T-shirts (both long- and short-sleeved) and tank tops.

Remember that if you’re visiting churches, mosques, or other religious sites on your adventures ashore, it’s expected that shoulders and bare legs are covered.

Smart Casual Evenings

Evenings on Celebrity’s ships reflect the ambiance of Relaxed Luxury.

Most nights, the dress code is smart casual, which means you look comfortable yet tasteful in anything from a skirt or dress to long pants, chic jeans, and a stylish top or button-down.

Evening Chic

Some evenings take on a dressier air aboard the ship, so be sure to consult with the dress code to make sure you’re dressed appropriately.

On Celebrity’s polished Evening Chic nights, you’ll have the chance to dress to impress with your own interpretation of glamor and sophistication. This might be a cocktail dress, a skirt, slacks, designer jeans with a blazer, or an elegant top.

There’s no requirement to pack a tuxedo or formal gown, although some guests love doing this for the sense of occasion. A suit and tie is welcome for Evening Chic nights, but is by no means essential.

Celebrity’s sailings of seven nights or longer have two nights designated as Evening Chic, while shorter cruises have one. All other days permit Smart Casual attire in the evenings.

Study the weather forecast and be sure to bring along climate-appropriate outerwear. When you’re packing for an Alaska cruise , for instance, you’ll almost certainly need lots of layers, with waterproof outerwear, winter hats, and gloves on hand.

You might have to throw in a sweater or sweatshirt on your packing list for a Caribbean cruise , and the same goes for a spring or fall stroll in a Mediterranean port.

Don’t forget sun hats and baseball caps for sunny days out on deck or in port, while a dressy scarf or shawl to drape over your shoulders is a good accessory for sophisticated evenings aboard the ship.

Beachwear & Activewear

Whether you’re splashing around on the pool deck or beachside, you’ll want to bring along at least a couple of swimsuits so they can dry between uses.

Cover-ups offer added protection on sun-kissed days, as well as an easy transition in attire from swimming to grabbing a bite to eat poolside or in the Oceanview Café at lunchtime.

Keep in mind that ships are equipped with gyms and outdoor tracks, fitness classes abound, and many ports welcome runners, kayakers, bikers, and other active types. There’s no need to skip out on your fitness regime if you don’t want to, so bring along your activewear, too.

You’ll want comfortable walking shoes for long excursions in port, whether it’s a pair of sneakers or comfy flats.

Sandals and flip-flops are must-haves for pool and beach days, while more elegant shoes are de rigueur for fancier evening dinners on board. Flip flops aren’t allowed in the main dining rooms and speciality restaurants in the evenings.

If the weather is going to be very rainy, the beaches rocky, or if there are mountains you’re looking to climb, be sure to bring along appropriate footwear, too, like rain boots, water shoes, or hiking boots.

Accessories

Don’t forget the trimmings! Bring some jewelry if you like, though, as with any trip, you’ll want to leave your best pieces at home. Though staterooms have safes, you’d be wise not to flash expensive baubles in some ports around the world.

A wristwatch is key, especially when cruising between time zones (so you won’t stress about missing the ship while out on an excursion), while an umbrella or poncho can help save a rainy day.

Topping your cruise packing list should be your eyeglasses and sunglasses. Do be sure to bring along some protective cases to help keep them intact during all of your travels.

Once you get the luggage unloaded, you’ll want some smaller bags on hand for the many adventures that await during the course of your cruise.

A daypack and/or beach bag is essential for toting items while in port, as well as whatever purse you want to use on board in the evenings.

While your stateroom will come stocked with premium bath amenities, you might want to bring travel-sized bottles of your preferred products, too.

Other cruise packing list must-haves include a facial cleanser, moisturizer, deodorant, shaving supplies, lip balm, Q-tips, and cotton balls/pads.

Pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash, too. Contact lens wearers should bring all the related gear (including a case and solution), and a pair of tweezers and a nail file and/or clippers will surely come in handy, too.

In the case of emergency, you can always restock most of these items from the onboard shops or from a drugstore in port.

Hair & Makeup Products

Hair can sometimes require extra taming when coming in from a day at the beach or a windy sea day up on deck. Be prepared with all the hairstyling products, accessories, and tools you need, as well as a brush/comb, too.

Hairdryers are provided in each stateroom, and all Celebrity ships have an onboard salon should you wish to try a new look.

Bring along your makeup (and don’t forget the makeup remover). You might also want a small bottle of perfume or cologne, too.

Health & Safety Products

Cover your health and safety bases by packing any necessities like medications (including seasickness remedies , as needed), pain relievers, vitamins, feminine hygiene products, birth control, and a basic, personalized first-aid kit.

Other things to pack for a cruise include sunscreen (and aloe vera for relief, just in case you miss a spot), as well as insect repellent if you’re sailing somewhere tropical.

Keep hand wipes and sanitizer close on hand to help keep the germs at bay while you’re on the go. Sanitizer is provided all over the ship, too.

What documents do I need to pack for a cruise?

Sure, it’s vacation, but that doesn’t mean you can get by on sunshine and frothy drinks alone. You’ll need some essential documentation and a properly stocked wallet to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch.

Wallet & Money Belt Items

You may want to trade in your wallet for a money belt while on your trip. Whichever route you choose, be sure to bring cash (including small bills for tips ashore), an ATM or debit card, and credit cards.

Tuck away your driver’s license, too (as well as an international driver’s license if you plan on renting a car abroad). Foreign travel also means having a passport on hand that’s stamped with any visas, if necessary.

You’ll also want to have your medical insurance card, as well as any travel insurance information, on you at all times.

Documentation & Contact Info

Be sure to bring along key travel documents, like copies of flight and hotel bookings. The cruise line will send you designated luggage tags, too; add those onto your luggage before embarking the ship.

Make sure you have copies of key documentation and information as backup, should anything get lost or stolen on your trip. Keep photocopies separate from the originals, and consider having scanned copies saved somewhere digitally, too.

Also have important phone numbers available (like for credit card companies or emergency contacts back home), as well as the mailing and email addresses for any friends or relatives you might want to write to while away.

It’s also prudent to keep copies of any prescriptions you take, as well as a list of medications and your medical history, should any medical incidents arise.

Travel guides can come in handy to read up on the ports that await you, while a pen and journal will allow you to jot down anything that might come up on the trip—or to document your vacation memories for posterity.

What technology items do I need to pack for a cruise?

These days, all of those electronic gadgets that we love could take up a suitcase all their own! To be digitally entertained and easily catch up with emails and news back home, keep your cell phone and laptop (or tablet) high on your cruise packing list.

Your cell phone might be all you need to take pictures, listen to music, and have an alarm clock for the morning. If that’s not the case, you might want to bring along a proper camera (with lenses, memory cards, etc.), music (and a player), and a travel alarm clock.

All those gadgets will need charging, too, so don’t forget those chargers. A power strip (preferably with built-in USB ports) can help ensure that the stateroom has more than enough juice to go around. On Celebrity’s Edge-series ships , you’ll find USB charging ports in your stateroom.

THE Cruise Packing Checklist: 85 Items To Bring (Printable)

Searching for a cruise packing checklist you can trust? Look no further. The staff at Cruzely has taken cruises from Miami to Vancouver, including trips done solo, as a couple, and with a family.

In other words, when it comes to packing for a cruise, nobody has the expertise — and the experience — that we do.

And if you think packing for a regular vacation can be daunting, then try packing for life on the ship.

What’s so challenging about cruise packing? Well, when you cruise you have some unique situations that you don’t find on any other vacation.

First, you have so many different scenarios to pack for . Sure you might think that it’s tossing some shorts and a swimsuit into a suitcase. On a cruise, however, you’re hanging out by the pool in a swimsuit, dressing up for dinner, wearing casual clothes to the buffet, and putting on something warm for a show in the theater.

In other words, you need to pack for a lot of different situations.

Second, in the middle of the ocean it’s tough to run out for anything that you forgot . Yes, you can wait until you get to port to pick up things you meant to bring, but that’s not always convenient. And while the ship will have some sort of small shop you can purchase things you forgot, these spots are notorious for being expensive for basic items (seriously, we’ve seen an $18 bottle of cold medicine).

That’s why we’ve put together this packing checklist for your next cruise. It covers everything that you might need to bring, all broken down into easy sections. It’s not saying you have to bring everything on the list, but it offers up a lot of ideas that you’ll want to consider.

While many items on the list are self-explanatory, we go into more detail below about what’s included on the checklist for your cruise.

Cruise Packing Checklist: Clothes

Clothing will make up the bulk of what you’ll bring on a cruise, and rightly so. With so many different scenarios to dress for on a cruise, it’s helpful to bring a little bit of everything.

Of course, how much you’ll bring depends on how many days you’ll be at sea. Shorter cruises obviously require fewer items. Also, it’s ok if you wear the same thing twice on a cruise. For a 7-day cruise, having 3-4 outfits is a good idea.

Casual Clothes

• T-Shirts (at least one for every two days of your cruise)
• Shorts (at least one pair for every two days of your cruise)
• Long pants (at least one pair for nights on the ship)
• Long-sleeve shirt (at least one for nights on the ship)
• Swimsuit (At least two, so that one can dry when you wear the other)
• Swimsuit cover-up
• Light jacket or hoodie (evenings on the ship can be cool)
• Sleep clothes
• Athletic shorts
• Flip-flops (be sure they have tread; wet decks can be slippery)

Formal Clothes for Men

• Dress shirt

Cruise Packing Checklist: Items For the Cabin

Think you only need to pack things to wear? The following items are ideal for a cabin to make it more comfortable during your cruise. Don’t think you have to pack all of these items, but those that catch your interest should be brought along.

• Small fan (cabins don’t have fans to circulate air)
• Nightlight (interior cabins are especially dark)
• Magnetic hooks (to hang from the ceiling to dry swimsuits)
• Outlet adapter (to provide more outlet spaces in the cabin; those with surge protectors aren’t allowed)
• Shoe organizer (hangs over the door for storage of small items)
• Alarm clock (alarm on the phone is just fine)
• “ Poopouri ” (bathroom smells can linger)

Cruise Packing Checklist: Personal Items

In addition to clothes, you need to pack a few other items with you to make your cruise go smoothly. This includes everything from your boarding documents to your toothbrush.

• Boarding documents
• Luggage tags
• Passport/birth certificate
• Copy of passport/birth certificate (carry a copy of your passport with you in port; keep the original in the cabin safe)
• Emergency contact numbers

• Over-the-counter medicines (headache, stomachache)
• Motion sickness pills/patches
• Phone charger
• Waterproof phone case

Cruise Packing Checklist: Kids Items

Obviously not everyone packs for a cruise with kids. But if you are packing for a family, then there are some things that good to bring. See our full list of ideas here .

• A new toy (great for when kids are fussy and need a distraction)

One thing to know is that cruise lines will provide a crib for sleeping in your cabin at no charge. Just let the staff know you need one.

While we’ve covered a number of things to pack for your cruise, there are some other miscellaneous items that are a good idea to bring.

• Non-alcoholic drinks ( if allowed by your cruise line )
• Towel clips
• Wristwatch (set to the ship’s time when leaving for port)
• Lanyard (for holding your room keycard)
• Books/magazines
• Wrinkle-release spray
• Refillable bottle

Cruise Packing Checklist: Not Needed/Not Allowed

The following items may be tempting to bring, but cruise lines either take care of these for you or they aren’t allowed on the ship.

• Hair dryer (already provided in each cabin)
• Liquor/beer
• Homemade snacks (not allowed; pre-packaged snacks are ok)
• Towels (beach towels are supplied on the cruise)
• Clothing iron
• Weapons (including small knives and pepper spray)

Cruise Packing Tips: Beyond the Checklist

As we’ve mentioned, packing for a cruise is a little different than any other vacation. While you need to prepare for lots of different situations — everything from hanging out by the pool to formal night — we actually think it can be easier to pack for a cruise than other trips. That’s because the rules for packing are more relaxed than if you are flying for a vacation.

Luggage Rules Are Fairly Simple Want to bring a large suitcase? Or two large suitcases? Or two carry-ons and several large bags? It’s all ok. The luggage rules surrounding cruises are nothing like you’ll find with airlines. Cruises don’t charge for luggage and there are no weight limits (within reason) .

In short, you can bring as much as you want. That’s one less thing to worry about when packing for your cruise and very convenient for passengers who are driving to the port.

Remember You Have to Carry Everything to the Ship While the rules surrounding luggage mean you can bring as much as you want, remember that whatever you bring, you will have to get it to and from the port. So if you are flying to the cruise port, then you’ll have to pay any baggage fees your airline might charge. You also have to carry your bags to the terminal to drop off for the luggage handlers.

Instead, keeping your bags manageable will save you a lot of hassle when you head to the ship.

Liquids Are OK Another way cruise packing is easier is that there aren’t rules regarding liquid sizes. You likely know that airlines limit you to three ounces of liquids to get through security. There are no such limits with cruise security .

So if you have a bottle of your favorite shampoo you want to bring or simply have an 8-ounce bottle of sunscreen, go ahead and pack it. There is no need to put it into smaller travel-sized containers.

Keep Anything for the First Day in Your Carry-On You don’t have to check any bags at the port if you don’t want. If you can carry it with you to your cabin, you are welcome to take it aboard. Still, many people choose to check larger or heavier bags instead of carrying those by themselves. It’s just easier. These bags are then delivered to your room later in the afternoon or evening.

If you check a bag, be sure to bring a carry-on that has anything in it you might need for the first day. So you’ll want a change of clothes, swimsuit, toiletries, boarding documents, and any valuables. If you bring on wine or champagne, also pack it in your carry-on so that it doesn’t accidentally get broken.

Depends on the cruise line. In general, however, if you are traveling with two adults, you can bring two bottles of wine.

What to pack/wear for a Winter cruise to the Caribbean?

This is my first time cruising in the Winter.....12/4/22 Carnival Celebration!!  I don't know if I should pack hot weather clothes (shorts, tanks, summery dresses) or more warmer options for onboard. I know what to wear on port days but this is an 8 day cruise and so much time is spent on the ship.

Definitely warm weather clothes & a light jacket/sweater for evenings. We wear our cold weather clothes (we live in Colorado) on the plane, coming & going (same outfit). Do try to fly in at least one day (two is better). Flight delays are horrendous

Hi, I have sailed the Caribbean many, many times over the years........and many times during the winter months. I have always found the temps to be warm, no matter the month and so, I bring a lot of lightweight attire.  Shorts, t's, crop pants for daytime and although I am not a big pool person, I do pack 1 or 2 bathing suits. 

For any trip, anywhere, I look up all the locations and get the weather averages for each ... in your case look at November and December ... to make an educated guess.  Once you eyeball your list, what to pack becomes quite clear.

Expect warm to hot.  the northern islands (Bahamas, for example) will be slightly cooler, but I've never been cold on one of the islands.  The evenings can be coolish, so bring a sweater and/or light jacket.  

It also depends on which port you are sailing out of.  Usually (barring an unusual cold front), Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are warm.  Port Canavarel can be cooler, as well as New Orleans and Galveston.

Sorry to offend, the Caribbean is a big place and I thought you might be better served by researching your specific ports so you'd be prepared.  

We have sailed to the Caribbean in December, January, and February. In all cases, summer wear was comfortable most of the time. I did bring a hoodie, which I used on a few cooler seadays, and a wrap for evenings. It's always been warm to hot in ports,

I have a Thanksgiving cruise coming up and I will be checking out temps in Nassau ahead of embarkation.  Always good to be in the know 👍

Yes, it is still hot in the Caribbean. However, be forewarned if there is a freeze in Florida it is usually cooler in the Carribean. One cruise (December 2003) that happened and we had highs of 55-60. I WISHED I had brought a light jacket and more long pants as it was chilly.

 I agree. When there was a cold snap in Florida in December 2003 (orange blossoms froze) happened a couple of days after we sailed. We did not have any winter clothing with us beyond what we wore on the plane. (And although it was cool, my winter coat was too much, it was not THAT cold, just cool) I know it was highly unusual, but now I always bring a couple pairs of daywear long pants and a hoodie or something similar for just in case. I have never needed them again. Hopefully it stays summer like for the OP, but I would still prepare in case it doesn't.

  I always take a jacket ( lightweight) and at least a pair of jeans or pants.  Getting on the ship is often in the 40’s or 50’s.  I’ve been wrapped up in the sun with pool towel, jacket and jeans as late as March and as early as November.  Of course I hope for warmer but go prepared.    

As far as evening clothes go I dress for the Caribbean in sundresses, even white sandals with a wrap.  Once you get south of the Bahamas the days are usually swimsuit weather.  We will be in CocoCay this December and I’m hoping for a beach day but it may not be.    

We left Florida once for Kansas City forgetting the temp difference.  No jacket, the DH was in shorts and sandals.  We laughed but froze our way to the car.  The wind chill was awful.  Winter had arrived the week we were gone.

I live in Broward County, FL and as others have said we do have our cold snaps. We're cruising from Tampa (north of us and cooler by a good bit) in early 2023 and I plan on packing a few lightweight slacks/long sleeved top outfits for the first few days. I will check the weather forecast for the FL peninsula to determine just how many of those outfits I think I'll need and whether to add a long sweater type coat to add additional warmth. I'm excited to sail under the Skyway Bridge and don't want to be miserably cold (at least to me) while I am experiencing that moment!

Ah! Sailing out of FLL in the wintertime: Once I found myself pulling out of my carry - on a sleeveless top and shorts to change from slacks while waiting to board. It was miserably humid. Another year I pulled out fleece sweatpants to pull over lightweight pants. The weather prediction sometimes fools you.   

My packing habit is to always have at least one short sleeve and one long sleeve top, and a large scarf. My favorite long sleeve is a light weight cotton hoodie for sitting on the deck in the day.  I’m finding those easy to pack chiffon Kimonos do the trick to ward off air conditioning at night. 

You will find shops onboard and off board who will gladly sell you whatever you need.  We sail the Caribbean for two weeks in January.

We lived in Rome and later sailed the eastern Med many times in the Fall. Normally the rainy season begins between October 1st and December 15th. That's the averages. Winter just be prepared for light snow. During the rainy season it will be cold and drizzle to pour a lot. Do not wear corduroy because they hold that cold water. I wore water-proofed short leather boots, tall merino socks and bespoke jeans so I did not get the evil eye while doing my daily shopping just like the Italian ladies. So plain on anything from a longer raincoat to clear ponchos that dry fast once back on ship. 

We are heading out soon for our February holiday and hope one of the B2B cruises are warmer than Tampa. I will wearing cashmere or more casual sweat shirts for the car and dinners out. 

Caribbean is basically summer all year round!

Yes, it is a bit cooler in the winter (think high of 75-80 rather than 85), but more pleasant due to lower humidity levels. 

And ocean may feel a tad cool as you enter, but it is still quite comfortable quickly.

I always bring a sweater or wrap for the ship as you never know when that A/C will be too cool--or a storm rolls in & cools things off for a bit.

First consider your own personal thermostat.  I personally don't need a shawl or wrap for dinner in the MDR or the theater; you may be different.  This is probably the most important question of all. 

My specific experiences: 

- I was always comfortable -- day or night -- onboard in short sleeves.  Probably not sleeveless.  I found shorts and dresses comfortable the whole time.  My husband brought long pants for dinner but wore shorts the rest of the time.  

- On Coco Cay and by the ship's pool, I was a little chilly in the mornings but comfortable in the afternoons /evenings.  I would've liked to be "one step warmer" in the mornings.  I have since purchased a long-sleeved rash guard and think that'll be ideal.  I saw some women wearing track suits by the pool in the mornings -- that looked like a little too much for me.  

- I was a little chilly watching MUTS -- Movies Under the Stars -- after dark, so I went back to my room and brought out a thin chambray shirt, which I used like a blanket.  Perfect.  I actually brought that shirt to use for the trip home -- I left the ship wearing a tee-shirt, then layered on that shirt as we headed North.

What I Packed For a European WINTER River Cruise (Essentials, Clothes and More)

Heading off on a winter river cruise? How exciting! I’ve just got back from a river cruise in Germany.

To make sure you have everything you need (and nothing you don’t.) Here is a streamlined guide to packing for your winter adventure .

Quick Climate Check

• Expect chilly days and colder nights. Temperatures can dip below freezing, so pack clothes to help keep you warm. It’s always best to expect rain too, either a drizzle or a downpour!

Clothing Essentials

• Long or short-sleeved, whichever you prefer. I bought 1 for every day of the cruise.

• One or two good-quality, waterproof coats. Waterproof is the key word here!
• 4-5 pairs of Trousers/Pants or jeans – balance warmth with comfort.
• 2 or 3 outfits for any special dinners. River cruises are usually relaxed, but it’s nice to dress up occasionally.

• A couple of sets for a cosy, good night’s sleep. On most river cruises your room will be cleaned once per day, if you put ‘do not disturb’ on the door they won’t come in, but it’s easy to forget and always best to have some pyjamas to wear when in the room.
• Enough for a week – with extra socks in case they get wet.

• Waterproof and comfortable for market wanders. The streets will be cobbled so grip is important!
• Casual shoes for on the ship. I bought just two pairs of shoes and it was perfect. Indoor shoes and outdoor shoes!

If you are concerned about slipping on the snow and Ice when walking around Christmas markets, you can buy handy “traction cleats” that easily slip over your own shoes/boots.

They are very easy to put on and take off, and give you added peace of mind that you won’t have a nasty accident when you are on your cruise. Nobody wants to worry about that…

Accessories

• Hat, gloves, scarf – don’t leave the ship without them!
• Stay dry during those winter showers. If you are sailing on a premium river cruise ship, you may find that they supply umbrellas – so it is worth checking. That will then be one less thing for you to pack…
• One of my favourite things about river cruising is that you can just head to a shop if you feel like it and you can fill your bag with snacks or drinks. There no security to go through on river ships.

The brand of bags I’ve used for the last 7 or so years, and the one you’ll see in every post is Mia Tui .

I bought my first Mia Tui bag in 2017 and I've not used another brand since. They come with me on every cruise and are FANTASTIC. They are beautiful, almost indestructible and have so many pockets and useful parts.

Practical Bits

• Handy for public restrooms. Lots of the public toilets in Europe charge 50 cents or a euro.
• Pack a few small favourites for when you’re peckish or for if the dining area is closed. There isn’t a lot of food on river ships between meal times.
• Capture every Christmas light! Extra batteries are a must in the cold because they run down quickly.

Tech and Entertainment

• For all your gadgets. I usually bring a portable charger too.
• For those cosy, quiet moments onboard. On some river cruises there can be a lot of time to relax, so make sure you have things to fill your time.
• If you do have to work while onboard, bring your laptop. Most river cruises have free WiFi and if you have internet included in your phone plan you may be able to hot spot off your phone. This means you use your phones internet on the laptop and it doesn’t cost you any extra.

Health and Personal Items

• Essentials for just in case. If you are in doubt about if you need something medication-wise, bring it. You’ll never regret it!
• Include moisturisers to combat the dry winter air.
• Passport, insurance, credit cards, and some local currency.

Packing Smart

• Compression bags or packing cubes will help you fit more into your case, and make unpacking once you arrive easier.
• Coordinated clothing means more outfits with fewer items to pack.
• If there is a laundry available it’s good to know about it. You can wash a few items if necessary and it might stop you from packing all those “just in case” things that you will probably never need.
• I like to wash a few small items in the sink and dry them in the bathroom. I usually use a travel wash like the below:

I’m sure you are thinking of warm sunny weather as most people do when the Mediterranean comes to mind. But, in the winter months, it can be a lot cooler than in the summer .

It can be mild and sunny or cold and rainy, on a European cruise, so you need to be prepared. Also, on board the cruise ship it can be cooler inside with the air conditioning throughout the ship and in the cabin.

Things to Consider When Going to Europe on a Cruise

Before you spend a lot of time and money buying new clothes or shoes consider a few things first, before you select your items for your cruise packing list. 

What is the Weather like in the Mediterranean in the Winter?

• Going to Europe in the winter months means the weather forecast can be different on each port day from sunny days and warm weather to cold and wet.
• A great way to find out the weather is to check online the average weather forecast for the cruise ports and cities you will be visiting.
• Here are approximate daytime temperatures (but of course, these do vary depending on the port):
• October: 15 – 24*C (59*F – 75*F)
• November: 10 – 21*C (50*F – 70*F)
• December: 8 – 18*C (46*F – 65*F)
• January: 6 – 16*C (43*F – 61*F)
• February: 8*C – 18*C (46*F – 65*F)
• March: 13 – 19*C (55*F – 66*F)

Add Appropriate Clothing and Comfortable Shoes to Your Mediterranean Cruise Packing List

Here are a few things to consider for the Mediterranean cruise port days:

• Bring comfortable walking shoes as there is a lot of walking in European cities . Especially if you are going on shore excursions to religious sites or ancient ruins . 
• The streets/walkways are uneven and there are many stairs to take especially in older buildings.
• Pack appropriate clothing to visit cathedrals and churches as you will need to cover your shoulders, arms, and knees. 
• It is always handy to bring a light sweater/cardigan, shirt or scarf as some places will not let you in if you do not cover-up. This is everyone male or female. 
• Have a look at the official website of the building before you visit to check the dress code of a cathedral/religious site.
• Wear comfortable clothing and breathable clothing as the weather can change throughout the day in the ports of call.
• There are cooler evenings in the Mediterranean region in the winter months – remember this if you have a late sail. Also, on board in the evening, it will be colder outside.
• Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket for rainy days.

What are the Sea Days like on a Mediterranean Cruise ?

• The sea days in the winter will probably not be spent sunbathing by the pool unless it is a lovely warm day as this time of year it is cooler. 
• It can be windy out on the deck.
• The sea can be a little rough sometimes – weather-dependent.
• What to wear? It depends on the activities you plan to do on a sea day, but casual comfortable clothes or resort wear are fine.  
• If you would like to use the hot tub or if there is an inside pool pack your bathing suit.

What Type of Clothes Do You Need for A Mediterranean Cruise?

The first step is figuring out what type of clothes you will need for the Mediterranean cruise. Here are a few things to think about: 

How many formal nights will there be? 

• On average there are one to two formal nights on a seven-day cruise, two to three formal nights on a ten-day cruise, and two to four formal nights on a 14-day cruise. 
• This will depend on the cruise line you are sailing with as they do differ, as do their dress codes.
• On some cruise lines, the dress code for gala night/formal night/elegant night does not require formal wear of long dresses and tuxedos. 
• Check the cruise line website for the official dress code.  
• For example, on MSC you can wear formal attire or your smartest clothes. This makes a difference when you are packing your luggage.

Will there be a White Night?

Some cruise lines have a white party which is held on the pool deck or in one of the lounges on the ship (weather dependent) – where you guessed it everyone wears the colour white. This is an easy one for most people if you like wearing white!

Dining – where are you planning on eating while onboard?  

• Where are you going to eat; in the dining room, buffet, or speciality restaurants?  
• If you are planning on eating in the main dining room, pack dressier clothing – smart casual.
• On formal nights you will need to wear the dress code of the cruise line if you would like to eat in the dining room for formal dinners.
• In most speciality restaurants you can wear casual/smart casual (even on formal nights). 
• In the buffet, clothing can be casual (even on the formal nights).

Will you be going to the gym or fitness classes? 

Pack your workout wear if you plan to use the gym or take a fitness class on board. But only pack it if you are going to use it!

What wear on port days? 

• My tip is to pack layers as if it gets warm you can take layers off or put them on.
• If you are planning on going on shore excursions or walking around the ports on your own, wear comfortable footwear, as most paths are uneven. 
• There is nothing worse than your feet hurting halfway through the day or getting a blister.
• In Europe , the stairs need to be used in most buildings and your walking route may be longer than you are used to. 
• Trainers (sneakers), walking shoes, slip-on comfortable shoes that go with your outfits I recommend.
• Depending on the duration of your cruise you may need to use the laundry facilities. Some cruise lines have passenger laundry rooms that you can use or there will be laundry services on board. 

What to wear on sea days?

You can wear whatever you like as it depends on the activities you plan to do. Follow the dress code for the evening.

How To Pack the Ultimate Winter Mediterranean Cruise Packing List

Now let’s start talking about how to pack for a winter Mediterranean cruise without bringing too much luggage!

When packing for a winter Mediterranean cruise check the weather (see above for weather help) for all the ports as it can vary from the north to the south of the Mediterranean. 

The easiest way is by packing layers and by sticking to a colour theme, so all your clothes mix and match.

First, decide on the colours you would like to wear, this way you can mix and match your clothes.

Bahamas cruise packing list: What to pack for the islands

Packing for a Bahamas cruise? Toss your swimsuits and tropical attire into your suitcase and start channeling those relaxing island vibes.

Even in winter, the coolest part of the year, temperatures in the Bahamas only drop to the low 70s on average, making comfortable and breathable clothing crucial. But to do this cruise destination right, you are also going to want to explore beaches and historical sites, hike stunning terrain, engage in water sports and even swim with wild pigs, all of which require the correct gear and outfits.

We know you don't want to come home with a sunburn or sit around in wet clothing during your vacation. Learn what to pack for a Bahamas cruise so you're prepared for fun in the sun.

What to pack for a Bahamas cruise

If you plan to visit more than one Bahamian island, the good news is weather doesn't vary much among the islands. While daily year-round temperatures average between 77 and 90 degrees, mornings can be breezy in the Bahamas. Pack an extra layer, such as a lightweight cotton sweater or jean jacket, to shed by lunch. Just make sure it's easy to bunch up into your bag or purse once the sun starts baking.

Another tip: The weather doesn't change much throughout the day. You won't be rotating through a variety of clothing as you might for an Alaska cruise.

Thin and breathable clothing

Rain showers in the Bahamas are short and over before you know it. But since you're living out of a suitcase, you want clothing that dries quickly. Choose polyester, cotton and linen fabrics for your cruise wardrobe. Tempting as it may be to pack your favorite heavy cardigan to cozy up in, don't. It will take a long time to dry and there's nothing more miserable than sitting in wet wool.

When in doubt, choose thin, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing versus tight and constricting outfits. Your body will appreciate clothing not sticking to you as you're hiking up the 66 steep limestone steps of the Queen's Staircase in Nassau or exploring Lucayan National Park, enduring oppressive humidity. Pack shirts or dresses you can throw over a swimsuit, too, if a day in port means rolling into town for lunch after the beach.

Sturdy footwear

Not all Bahamian sidewalks or roads are paved like in the United States. Save your flip-flops for the beach and cute-but-uncomfortable shoes for the ship.

For touring, choose sturdy shoes such as Keen's, Chaco or Teva sandals -- all of which are waterproof and comfy, whether on land or in the water. Pack footwear you don't mind getting a little dirty; in other words, those brand-new white sneakers you packed should probably be resigned to "deck shoes" and worn only on the ship.

Eveningwear

Most cruise lines will have one or two formal or "evening chic" nights where dressing to the nines is encouraged, although not required. Passengers usually take this opportunity to book a table at a specialty restaurant, though you can still eat at the buffet if you have no intention of bringing a suit or cocktail dress on your vacation.

Instead of a velvet gown or dark suit, the trend for a tropical-weather sailing is lighter colors. For men, this might mean a tan suit or tan sport coat over slacks (even better if it's linen, which breathes more easily). Women should skip casual sundresses for something more elegant, while honoring a color palette influenced by the seaside surroundings (that said, little black dresses are never not in fashion on board).

Accessories and gear

If you don't take a lot of photos, did the cruise even happen? While a smartphone camera is fine, so are cameras you can pack into a dry bag and take on shore excursions. Just don't forget to bring a portable charger or power bank when you know you're going to burn through your phone's battery. It's hard to find an outlet for a charging cable at the beach.

The sun shines brightly in the Bahamas, which is precisely why 7.25 million tourists flock here each year. Pack sunscreen or sunblock in your day pack, then apply it liberally and often. It's especially easy to get burned when you spend all day in the sun on a cruise line's private island. Use waterproof sunscreen or sunblock for the days you're in the water.

Take the stress out of packing

You're going to sweat through your clothes, so anticipate changing outfits multiple times each day. Keep in mind that your ship may have a self-serve (typically coin-operated) laundry room or offer send-out laundry services . That means you can wear their favorite dress another night or pack less with plans to wear clothing more than once.

Bahamian ports are filled with shops selling clothing, medicine and toiletries. There are few things you may have left at home that you cannot find in Nassau or Freeport; your cruise ship will also sell a limited range of sundries. If your ship is only visiting cruise line-operated islands, however, you may want to bring extra toiletries and medications, just in case.

Bahamas cruise packing list

Here is a handy checklist to use while packing for your Bahamas cruise.

• A selection of lightweight T-shirts, tank tops, or other casual shirts to wear during the day. (I recommend quick-drying materials.)
• Two or three pairs of shorts, leggings or skirts to wear during the day.
• A swimsuit or swim trunks, with an extra to spare while the other is drying. You'll be spending lots of time in the ship's pool as well as on the country's beaches.
• A rash guard or shirt that can get wet so your back doesn't burn while snorkeling or playing in the surf.
• Cover-up. (I see a lot of stylish ones for those beachside selfies.)
• A lightweight waterproof jacket or raincoat.
• A thin fleece jacket or sweater for chilly mornings (and plane rides).
• A backpack or large beach bag to take into port or on the ship's pool deck.
• Two pairs of slacks or skirts (or dresses) or two button-down shirts and a suit coat for evening dining on the ship.
• Lightweight cardigan, scarf or sweater for air-conditioned restaurants on the ship.
• A pair or two of good walking shoes that breathe, such as sandals with ankle straps or an ankle-cut hiking, walking or running shoe.
• A pair of fancy shoes for evening dinners on the ship.
• Sun protection: sunglasses, a baseball hat or floppy straw hat, and sunscreen. (Consider bringing an aloe-based gel or cream to soothe the inevitable burn.)
• An umbrella.
• Reusable water bottle (to stay hydrated while in port and on the ship).
• Gym clothes (in case you get the itch to work off all those calories in the ship's gym or go for a run in port).
• Toiletries and prescriptions (pack in your carry-on in case luggage is delayed or lost).
• Underwear, pajamas and socks.
• Your cellphone or camera (and a charger so you don't miss an amazing shot).
• A dry bag or Zip-lock bags to protect your phone, camera and wallet during shore excursions on the water or at the beach.
• Entertainment for the beach, on board and the airplane, such as an e-reader or good book, deck of cards, portable video games, tablet, sketchpad, etc.
• Easy-to-pack beach toys for the kids such as inflatable beach balls, arm floaties, frisbees and collapsible pails with shovels.

Bottom line

Other than on formal night (which, again, is optional), casual attire is the preferred choice on a warm-weather sailing. So go ahead and pack that Hawaiian shirt or favorite outfits in tropical colors — then hop on board and make some fabulous memories in both comfort and style.

MSC Cruise Essentials: Must-Haves to Pack

These are my top cruise essentials that you MUST HAVE when taking a cruise. Trust me, you will regret not bringing them!

Passport, ID, Documents – Obviously, you’re going to need all necessary IDs and documents. I always always always recommend making a copy of these items and keeping it in your luggage.

Seasick Prevention – better safe than sorry with this one! I don’t typically get seasick, but I always pack some meds just in case. If you don’t want to take meds, try using a patch or bracelet instead — this patch  has 4.5 stars and over 12,000 reviews on Amazon!

Magnetic Hooks – Fun fact, cruise ship walls are totally magnetic!! This is one of my favorite cruise hacks, bring magnetic hooks to hang things in your stateroom. This can help you save space and keep your room organized. 

Extension Cords – Plugs are limited in cruise staterooms, so avoid fighting over charging rights and get an extension cord with multiple plugs ! BUT it MUST be cruise ship approved, meaning it doesn’t have a surge protector. These are all safe to bring: 

Towel Clips – It can be super windy on deck, so towel clips will be your best friend! They keep your towel from blowing all over the place — trust me they’re a game changer and super cheap. I would recommend 4 for each person to hold down all corners of the towel.

Water Bottle – Stay hydrated on board! Bring a reusable water bottle to refill instead of having to buy plastic water bottles each time.

Portable Fan – It gets hot on deck and during excursions, bring along this  portable fan

MSC Cruise Packing List: Clothes for Women

Dresses – I personally love wearing dresses when traveling, they’re flowy and easy and can be dressed up or down. Check if you have a formal night and pack accordingly.

Tops – As far as tops go, I recommend a couple t-shirts, tanks, and maybe a couple of nice tops if you prefer those to dresses. 

Bottoms – You’ll definitely want some shorts to wear with t-shirts or over a swimsuit. Also, depending on your style and destination, consider if you’ll need these bottoms as well: jeans, pants, skirts, etc.

Bras, Underwear, Socks – be sure to pack plenty of these! Look at what activities you’ll be doing in order to plan how many of each you’ll need.

Swimsuit – I recommend packing at least 2 swimsuits (I usually bring 3-4). I hate putting on a wet swimsuit, so if you have 2, you can wear one while the other dries. These are some of my favorite swimsuits on Amazon : 

Swimsuit Cover-up – Coverups are perfect for walking around the deck or popping from the pool to lunch! Here are some of my favorites : 

Sunhat – a sunhat is a must-have to block out the sun up on the cruise deck.

Pool/Beach Bag – you will definitely want a pool bag/beach tote on a cruise to help you carry your towel, towel clips, sunscreen, book (or kindle ) etc! I loveee these custom ones from Etsy too!

Pro-tip: this hat clip attaches to your bag and makes it easy to tote around your hat!

Sunglasses – I usually bring two pairs of sunglasses just in case I lose one.

Shoes – depending on the activities planned, I’ll pack tennis shoes, flip flops/beach shoes, and a pair of nicer wedges. Here’s a link to some of my favorites .

MSC Cruise Packing List: Clothes for Men

Tops – Cruises typically go to warm places, so breezy button downs or linen tops are best

Bottoms – most guys on cruises wear shorts, but it can’t hurt to bring a pair of nice pants or jeans too just in case

Underwear, Socks, Etc – Plan how many of each you’ll need by considering how many days you’ll be gone and the type of activities you’ll be doing

Swimsuits – I always recommend bringing at least two swimsuits, that way you’ll have an extra in case one is still drying. 

Beach bag/day pack – bring a beach backpack or dry bag on a cruise to help you carry your towel, towel clips, sunscreen, book (or kindle ) etc!

Shoes – depending on what you have planned, I recommend packing tennis shoes, flip flops/beach shoes, and a pair of nicer shoes just in case.

Sunglasses – probably a good idea to bring two pairs in case you lose one!

Hat – help protect your face from a sunburn by packing a hat!

MSC Cruise Toiletries Packing List

Here’s a list of toiletries you’ll need to pack for an MSC Cruise. Of course edit to what you need personally, you can do that on the checklist. 

Hair Products – pack all the necessary hair products you’ll need, like shampoo, conditioner, brush ( this one is great for tangles), comb, dry shampoo, hairspray, blow dryer, other styling tools, hair ties, bobby pins etc. Linked some of my favorite products below:

Pro Tip: I recommend bringing your own hairdryer if you can, the ones on board usually aren’t the best.

Skincare Products – make-up, lotion, cleanser, toner, tweezers, etc.

Oral Care –  Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Mouthwash

Deodorant  – it gets hot on deck, no one wants to be stinky 😉

Perfume/Cologne – the travel size and roll-on ones are super convenient for cruises

Sunscreen – You’re definitely going to want to pack PLENTY of sunscreen for an MSC Cruise! I like to use a spray on one for my body and one specifically for faces .  And in case you do burn, definitely bring along some aloe vera . 

Lip Balm – protect your lips with a hydrating lip balm and get one with an SPF too!

Medications – Pack typical medications you might need, like Advil, stomach meds, vitamins, and of course, and prescription meds.

What Else to Pack for a MSC Cruise

Here are a couple more things you’ll need or may want to consider packing:

• Waterproof Phone Case – Most phones are water resistant these days, but better safe than sorry
• Speaker – great for playing music in your room or when chilling out on the balcony. This Bose one is small, waterproof, and plays amazing sound – it’s what I use.
• Books or a Kindle – I always bring my kindle for reading on the deck
• Snorkel gear – I personally love the ones that are full-face, they look dorky but they’re fantastic!
• Camera gear – photographic your adventures, just don’t forget extra SD cards!
• Lanyard – for carrying around your cruise card

Are you going on a Mediterranean cruise and wondering what to pack? Even for experienced cruisers, packing for a Mediterranean cruise can be a challenge.

If you’ve been on a Caribbean cruise , your Mediterranean cruise packing list will have some similarities. You’ll need cruise outfits for days and evenings, including formal nights on the cruise ship.

However, you’ll want to dress for the culture in the cruise ports, as well as the weather depending on when you travel.

What to Bring on a Mediterranean Cruise

When planning what to wear on a Mediterranean cruise , you’ll need to plan for the days and evening on your cruise ship, as well as days in port when shore excursions may be planned.

You’ll also need your travel essentials for any pre and post stays in your embarkation or disembarkation port, as well as your cruise essentials for your cabin.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise

Whether you’re taking a 7 day or a 12 day Mediterranean cruise, you’ll need cruise outfits for sea days on the cruise ship, as well as days in port visiting. You’ll also need to plan for evening wear on your cruise ship.

If you want to pack light for your cruise , and avoid bringing too much luggage, you can definitely wear items more than once and pack a capsule wardrobe.

It’s a good idea to check your cruise line dress code, however in most cases a Mediterranean cruise will include 2 Formal, Elegant or  Chic Evenings . On most cruise lines this can mean anything from a suit or dress pants and shirt for men and cocktail dress to a Little Black Dress for ladies.

The other evenings will be have a casual or smart casual dress code.

These days, cruise line dress codes are more relaxed than just a few years ago. However, during the evenings on European cruises, many people do still dress up for dinner in the main dining room or specialty restaurants.

What to Wear in Mediterranean Cruise Ports

When planning what to wear in some of the cruise port cities in Italy, Greece, France or Spain, consider your shore excursions so you can plan accordingly.

You’ll want to be comfortable, but if you want to blend in just a little, you’ll want to be a bit stylish as well.

Casual clothing is just fine. However most Europeans don’t wear workout wear or yoga pants as streetwear, so you may want to save this type of clothing for the gym or for hanging out on the cruise ship.

While you can dress as you like, many people pack “nicer outfits” than you might for a Bahamas cruise , for example.

Sightseeing

In historic cities like Venice, Rome, Florence, Athens, you’ll likely spend time sightseeing, along with a lot of walking on uneven cobblestone streets. It’s very important to bring comfortable walking shoes . Save your high heels for dinners, shows and the casino on the cruise ship.

Always pack a lightweight scarf or shawl, pashmina or cardigan for when visiting religious buildings during summer months (to cover your shoulders). I also like to have a light sweater or shawl for the evening on the cruise ship, when the air conditioning can be cool.

You’ll also want to pack a money belt or neck wallet, and/or an anti-theft backpack or cross-body bag.

Greek Isles

If you are going to Santorini, Mykonos or another Greek island, consider packing a white dress or white buttoned shirt and shorts. It looks striking against the backdrop of the azure blue sea and stunning landscape.

If you’re doing a Western or Eastern Mediterranean cruise during the summer months and planning a beach day in Barcelona or Mykonos, you can wear a sundress or shorts and a t-shirt over a bathing suit.

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise in Summer

The most popular and busiest time time to go on a Mediterranean cruise is during the summer months. You’ll want to pack for hot, sunny days if you cruise in June, July, August and even early September.

If you’re going on a summer cruise, during the day you can dress quite casually. Shorts and a t-shirt or a sundress, or a bathing suit and cover up when hanging out on the Lido deck, are perfect!

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise In Fall & Spring

Early Spring and Fall months are consider shoulder season for Mediterranean cruises. Without the summer heat, April and May, and late September, October are are great times to visit ancient cities comfortably.

You’ll still have warmer days, but packing a light jacket is a must. A pashmina or scarf is a good idea as well. Since the weather can vary, wear layers and make sure to pack long sleeve tops and jeans or pants.

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise in Winter

The winter months are a less popular and common time to cruise to the Mediterranean, however some cruise lines, like MSC Cruises, do offer sailings through the coolest months of the year.

If you’re going on a Mediterranean cruise in December or January, pack a jacket and scarf, as well as pants and sweaters to be comfortable when sightseeing.

Here’s a list of the most  important things to pack for your cruise . I’ve included both cruise essentials that will be useful for any cruise, as well as things to bring that are specific for your Mediterranean Cruise. 

Passport & Government ID

The most important things to pack for your Mediterranean cruise is your passport and government ID. Make sure to have this on you, and  do not pack it in your checked luggage .

It’s a good idea to have a passport holder , to keep your passports and other important documents safe and secure. Don’t forget to make copies of your passport!

Neck Wallet

An easy to conceal neck wallet is a very useful item to bring with you on a Mediterranean cruise. When traveling in crowded European cities, it’s really important to protect your money, passports and credit cards from pickpockets and petty theft.

Cruise & Travel Documents

Check with the cruise line to see what travel documents you will need. You may need a proof of vaccine or have to provide test results. This can vary by cruise line and itinerary, and is ever evolving, so make sure to check back regularly.

Carry-on Bag

Pack a carry on bag for your flight as well as for your cruise embarkation day. You cruise carry on bag should have the essentials you’ll need for the day you board your cruise , including medication, valuables, phone chargers and even a change of clothes.

A  small carry-on suitcase , weekender bag or backpack all make great carry-on bags.

Make sure to pack your prescription and over the counter medication and keep it in your carry-on bag, just in case your luggage gets lost!

It’s a good idea to bring at least 2 additional weeks of medication with you, and have a print out of your prescriptions as a precaution when traveling.

Whether your cruise is in June or July, or September or October, you’ll want to pack at least 1 bathing suit for casual cruise sea days or for beach or sailing excursions.

A swimsuit cover up is a must bring item for any cruise packing list. If you’re on a longer Mediterranean cruise, consider packing 2-3 cover ups .

A sunhat is a must when in the Mediterranean cruise ports. I was shocked at how hot it got, and how there was so little shade, when we visited Ephesus on a Med cruise a few years ago.

The one packing mistake I made, and regretted, was not packing a sunhat and having to by sunhats on site.

Travel Umbrella

If you’re cruising in the Fall or winter months, you have a fair chance of having some rainy days. Rain is less common in the summer, but a windproof travel umbrella is smart to bring just in case.

It’s can even be a good idea to pack a light rain jacket if your cruising to the Mediterranean in late September, October and November.

Light Jacket or Sweater

If you’re cruising during the shoulder seasons, you can expect some cooler weather in the evening and even during the day on shore excursions. Make sure to pack a light jacket for rain or cooler weather that fits easily in your day bag or back pack.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

You’ll probably want to pack a few pairs of shoes for your cruise , including flip flops or sandals, casual shoes and dress shoes for formal nights .

Pack a pashmina , shawl or lightweight scarf to wear on the cruise ship in the evening (the air conditioning can be cool), or on your flight.

You’ll also need to cover your shoulders if you enter religious buildings when sightseeing in Italy, Greece and elsewhere, so a pashmina is a perfect choice.

Seasickness Treatment

What to pack for a cruise – an expert’s guide

C ruising is now more popular than ever, and around the world millions of travellers who have never cruised are joining those in the know aboard these floating hotels. And why not, there’s no better way to explore the farthest reaches of our planet!

If you’re a first-time cruiser, or even if you’ve done a few cruises but aren’t sure how to equip yourself for all the diverse experiences a cruise throws at you, then help is at hand.

Even though I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy 70-plus voyages to hundreds of amazing destinations, knowing what to pack for a cruise is still not intuitive. That’s why I swear by a cruise packing list – I keep it on my phone and update it after every trip, noting whatever I’ve forgotten or didn’t use at all.

What you need to know before packing for a cruise

The main thing to remember is cruise-ship staterooms generally have considerably less storage space than hotel rooms. A soft-shell suitcase that can be stored under the bed immediately frees up valuable living space – and because you may be onboard for a few hours before you can get to your stateroom to unpack, you’ll also need a good-sized carry-on bag.

I always print out my itinerary so I can see what’s on every day and evening and, working with my master cruise checklist, lay out everything I’ll need on the bed. Then, because I tend to over-pack, I put half of it away!

Packing clothes that can do double duty is always a good idea – for example, tops and classic black pants that can be dressed up one night then worn again during the day. Remember to choose items in limited and neutral colours you can mix and match.

Cruise packing must-haves

While your destination and type of voyage determines key items on your cruise packing list (a warm jacket and gloves for an Arctic expedition are obviously not necessary for a midsummer Mediterranean cruise!), there are some basics that work on every cruise. And even if you’re cruising in tropical waters, the onboard air-con is often freezing, so don’t forget a wrap or light jacket to wear in the evenings.

Your cruise essentials check-list

• Cashmere wrap – warm, light and versatile, it rolls up into a tiny ball.
• Sarong – for the pool, beach, and to cover your head and shoulders if you’re visiting a sacred site.
• Foldable, waterproof backpack for offshore adventures or extra shopping.
• Thongs for pool and beach; closed-toe lightweight walking shoes, for excursions and onboard activities; smart flats or sandals that can go from day to evening (Bared Footwear’s collections are designed for comfort and s tyle). That’s just three pairs of shoes altogether!
• Socks for walking (even in warm weather) and onboard fitness classes.
• Long/exercise pants for onboard and onshore activities.

Cruise essentials for your carry-on bag

This one is important – and it may change how you pack forever. Your carry-on bag – which can double as a daypack or beach bag – should contain valuables, travel documents, medication and a change of clothes in case your luggage is lost or delayed in transit. Pack a swimsuit so you can jump in the spa or pool while waiting for your stateroom to be ready.

What not to bring on a cruise?

Electrical items such as irons will be confiscated because they are a fire risk – much easier to bring clothes that don’t need ironing. Win win!

What to pack for a Norwegian cruise

The four seasons in norway are very distinct, so here are our packing tips for each season..

To make packing a bit easier, we have made a short list of recommendations of things to bring for all seasons along the Norwegian coast. This should be in addition to the basics.

But if you forget something, don't worry – our onboard shops carry a selected range of high-quality knitwear, clothing, souvenirs and gift items, as well as a small selection of toiletries.

Note: the dress code on our ships is casual, so there’s no need to pack formal attire for dinner.

Year-round essentials

Warm underlayers and mid layers: It is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. The air trapped in-between thin layers warms to your body’s temperature and acts as valuable insulation.

Wool sweater or fleece: This should go over your under and mid layers.

Wind and waterproof jacket and pants: Outer layers should be wind and waterproof to adapt to the changing conditions on the Norwegian coast.

Footwear: You'll need a pair of worn-in walking boots to use outdoors, as well as some casual shoes for use onboard.

Cotton socks: Pack an extra pair or two in your backpack if you’re going out snowmobiling or dog sledging and your feet become damp or wet.

Swimwear: If you intend to use any sauna or hot tub facilities, you will need to pack a swimsuit.

Other items

Passport and/or ID card (this also applies to Scandinavian citizens)

Camera and memory card

Sun protection: SPF, hat, sunglasses

Lip salve: The northern air is very dry, so you’ll need to pack plenty of lip balm.

What to pack for each season in Norway

Spring: cover all bases.

As you are likely to encounter three seasons during one sailing in spring , it’s important to pack well and layer up. We advise bringing a wool jumper, warm socks, a thick scarf, winter boots, warm, waterproof pants and jacket, a hat and gloves.

Summer: sunny attire

Summer weather along the coast can be changeable, so in addition to T-shirts, shorts and sandals, it’s wise to pack a warm jumper, light jacket (water-resistant), thin hat and gloves, and hiking shoes. You might also want to pack an eye mask, to help you sleep during the season of the  Midnight Sun . 

Fall: lots of layers

While the sun may be shining, you can also expect cooler weather during fall . Make sure to pack thin layers and some warm clothes – a woolly jumper, wind and waterproof jacket and pants, a hat, gloves and light hiking boots.

Winter: wrap up warm

It can get very cold along the coast during winter, so we recommend you pack base and mid layers, as well as a thick winter jacket, wool or fleece hat, balaclava/buff, gloves, woolly jumper, scarf, winter boots, and pull-on spikes (for sale on board). And remember the layer principle: it is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. 

In very cold weather, it’s a good idea to wear two pairs of gloves – one thick pair of mitts (mitts don’t separate the fingers so they keep your hands warmer) and a thin pair of gloves underneath that allow you the use of your fingers. If you’re prone to cold extremities, you might also want to buy some carbon hand and foot warmers, which are available from most good outdoor shops.

What should I wear to go hiking in Norway?

During your voyage, you can join one of our onshore hiking  excursions . Hikes involve a high level of physical activity, on terrain that may often be uneven, slippery, and steep. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness and mobility, and the right gear too. 

Solid shoes will be key, but not new ones you’ve yet to use. A few layers of clothing are ideal, plus a wind and rainproof jacket with a hood, and a small backpack. Don’t worry about spikes, trekking poles, snowshoes, or headlamps. We’ll provide these free of charge when the season or weather calls for them.
