PATAGONIA MOBILE WORN WEAR TOUR: IF IT’S BROKE, FIX IT

PATAGONIA MOBILE WORN WEAR TOUR: IF IT’S BROKE, FIX IT

March 31, 2015 by Corey Simpson

Extending the life of our garments is the single most important thing we can do to lower our impact on the planet. In keeping our clothes in use longer, we reduce overall consumption.

Today, we’re proud to launch a cross-country mission to change people’s relationship with stuff. The Worn Wear Mobile Tour, kicking off April 2 in Ventura, Calif., and ending May 12 in Boston, is our attempt to encourage customers to make their clothes last a lifetime.

As part of the tour, we’re bringing repair staff from Patagonia’s repair facility in Reno, Nev., on the road to offer free repairs on busted zippers, rips, tears, buttons, pulls and more – in addition to teaching people how to fix their own gear. Used Patagonia items will be for sale. The tour will be stopping at a myriad of locations such as retail locations, coffee shops, farmers markets and trailheads.

Patagonia’s Worn Wear program was created in 2013 as a way to encourage people to take good care of their gear, washing and repairing as needed. The program aims to keep clothing, regardless of brand, in circulation for as long as possible. When it’s time for a replacement, we want you to invest in something that lasts.

That’s why Patagonia makes the best quality, most functional products in the world, guarantees them for life and owns the biggest garment repair facility in North America. And it’s why were going on tour – bringing Worn Wear’s critical message to communities across the country.

“ There is nothing we can change about how we make clothing that would have more positive environmental impact than simply making less, ” notes Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario. “Worn Wear is a celebration of quality products and their relationship to our lives. It’s a simple but critical message: keep your gear in action longer and take some pressure off our planet.”

The Worn Wear Wagon is a one-of-a-kind custom vehicle, created by artist/surfer Jay Nelson. The solar-powered camper shell is made from redwood salvaged from giant wine barrels and mounted on a ’91 Dodge Cummins fueled by biodiesel. The mobile repair shop, complete with an Industrial Juki sewing machine, will be open to anyone who brings in a garment, regardless of brand. The tour will aim to educate visitors about the philosophy behind Patagonia’s Worn Wear program, in addition to offering up some fun with food, drinks and live music.

In November 2014, Patagonia announced a Black Friday investment in Yerdle , an innovative company providing a simple way for people to put goods back into circulation and avoid buying new   –   capturing the value of what they already own to save money and the planet. The investment, made through our internal venture fund, coincided with Worn Wear Swap Events in stores around the country, allowing customers to bring in their used Patagonia clothing and swap it with something off the rack.

At the end of the day, we can tinker with our supply chain, improve sourcing, use all-recycled fabrics and give away millions of dollars to environmental organizations until the cows come in, but nothing is more important and impactful than keeping our clothing in use for as long as possible. In fact, by keeping our clothing in use just nine extra months, we can reduce related carbon, waste and water footprints by 20-30 percent each, according to the UK-based group   WRAP   – simply because we’re making and throwing away less.

We look forward to seeing you at Worn Wear Mobile Tour stops around the country!

We’re a little more than halfway through the tour here in the United States and can’t decide what’s worse: the summer heat down in the South or the demolition y’all do on your garments! Truthfully, we’re not fazed by either. We love the challenging repairs being thrown at us and don’t mind a bit of sweat along the way.

We’re meeting some inspiring characters:

Joseph stopped by to repair the shirt that’s accompanying him to every national park before he’s thirty.

The list goes on. There’s no shortage of rich stories and compelling reasons to keep garments in use and out of the trash.

Just like sittin’ on the porch back home.

For the second half of the tour we’ll be crawling up the East Coast then heading west to Chicago for the grand finale. Thanks to all who’ve participated both in person and on social media. We’re constantly encouraged by the growing contingent of folks who display the upmost responsibility in the stories they wear . Our next stop is this Friday, September 2, at Arcadian Shop in Lenox, Massachusetts, followed by visits to New Hampshire, Michigan and Illinois. The Worn Wear tour page  has all the details.

Patagonia Worn Wear Tour is Coming!

If it's broke, fix it.

The Patagonia Worn Wear Tour is rolling into Fayetteville and setting up shop in the Water Stone Outdoors parking lot on Thursday, May 7th . Think of it as a travelling repair facility with expert technicians at the ready to either fix your stuff or teach you how to fix your own stuff. In fact, the tour is all about stuff–specifically the folks at Patagonia want you to redefine your relationship with stuff. In their own words:

“ One of the most responsible things we can do as a company is make high quality stuff that lasts for years and can be repaired. The Worn Wear Tour celebrates the stories we wear and keeps your gear in action to take some of the pressure off the planet.”

Hear, Hear! Here at Water Stone we agree: let’s take some pressure off the planet. We encourage our customers to buy thoughtfully, buy better, buy less. Now, with Patagonia’s help we can become better fixers. We believe that our community is doing a damn good job with this concept–lots of worn wear on the streets,  at the crag and in the river! Battered, beat up and loved. Let’s get together and celebrate this while we extend the life of our favorite stuff. We offer Patagonia a heartfelt thank you for all that they do to take pressure off the planet. We are thrilled to be one of 18 stops on this six week tour.

We have built a little event around the arrival of the Worn Wear team with opportunities to win cool more stuff (irony alert).

Here’s the drill:

Worn Wear Repairs : 10-5, rips, tears, zippers, buttons… If its broke, fix it! Also they will be selling used Patagonia gear so expect some good bargains. They will also be setting up a station where an expert repair technician will teach you how to repair your own stuff.

American Alpine Club Breakfast : 8:30-10:30, $5 donation. eggs, bacon and pancakes. Campground host Paul Nelson and crew are pros.

Free pour overs  by Josh and Nate, the coffee snobs, from 8:30-10:30. They will be serving Counter Culture Coffee out of Durhan, NC. We will also be serving hometown favorite Mattie’s Mountain Mud. Gotta love the bottomless free cup o joe…

Patagonia Jackets

Step onto the Virtual Soapbox  and win  a Patagonia jacket. All you have to do is respond to the message of the Tour in your own way. We will video it and your name will be entered into the raffle for the jacket. So, think about it and testify! Head off in any direction you like, it’s your soapbox.

rope rug

Craig Spaulding will be on hand 9-5 demonstrating how to weave  old ropes into rugs.  He is the mind behind the G String Climbing grip–a super effective training tool. Check it out here . He will be conducting a  dead hang contest.   Come by at any time and see what you’ve got. Winner gets a comprehensive Waterstonia package.

Blue Ridge Outdoors will be in town represented by the peripatetic dynamo Jess Daddio. Jess is charged with  Bringing the Sac Back,  so dust off your rusty hacky-sack skills and let’s kick some. Old School! Old’s Cool.

HAPPY HOUR at the AAC Campground at 5. We will tap a keg of Bridge Brew Works latest concoction and fire up a delicious house mix with DJ Nathan Patrick . As our newest local DJ, Nathan is ready to show us what he’s got. We will draw for the raffle winners and relax. Blue Ridge Outdoors is sponsoring a slack line contest  so get your balance on track.

Drop by, fix your stuff, hang out, hang on, step on the soapbox, and have fun!

The Worn Wear trailer has been hand-built to an original design to be able to travel to the toughest locations around Europe. It plays host to some very technical repair equipment while bringing hot chocolates and good vibes to the slopes. On top of that, the team is also there to educate people on how to keep snow gear in good condition for multiple seasons through teaching different skills such as patching, re-waterproofing shells and fixing zippers.

Repairs in Retail

Answer this question, and be honest. Have you ever thrown away something that could be repaired? For most of us, the answer is a resounding yes. But have you ever wanted to repair your gear and didn’t know where to start? Probably, also a yes. And it’s understandable. Our society places convenience above conservation. Replacing instead of repairing. And this needs to change. But how?

We don’t pretend to have all the answers. And we can’t solve all these problems alone. But we can play our part. That’s why we’re making it easier than ever before to repair your Patagonia gear. All you need to do is visit one of our stores. It’s that simple. And why shouldn't it be?

For those in Berlin, Stockholm or Milan, you can bring your busted gear to one of our permanent in-house repair stations. Our team of expert in-store fixers are ready to roll up their sleeves and get down to the business of repairing your gear. If you’re unable to visit one of our three in-store repair centers, don’t worry! You can still arrange for your gear to be repaired by visiting any European Patagonia store. Simply bring your item needing repair to your nearest retail store and our team will walk you through the process. They’ll prepare your item for repair and get your gear ready for shipping to one of our EU repair centers—where your item will be fixed by expert hands. Then when your repair is complete and ready for collection, we’ll get in touch via email or phone.

If you choose to bring an item for repair, your gear will be lovingly restored using materials that match your item as closely as possible. Sometimes, exact matches aren’t always possible and repairs may be visible. Yet this isn't a bad thing. Your repaired gear tells a story—its visible repair remains as a reminder to the adventures gone wrong. A perceptible scar that marks the start of an extra chapter for your gear. Sadly, not all issues can be fixed—sometimes an item is just too well-loved that it is beyond repair. If this happens, our team will be in touch to provide end-of-life recycling options.

Repairing the things we own may not come naturally to most of us. Yet when we fix an item of clothing, replace a broken buckle, or even sew on a new button, we’re fixing our relationship with the things we own. Reducing our need to keep producing. Repairing what was once so readily replaced. Repaired items will never be perfect—but it was this quest for perfection that made us forget the value of repairs in the first place. Repair your gear in-store today. Replace your gear only when it can no longer be repaired.

Let’s make things that last longer. And do more with what we already have.

Give gear a second chance.

Between 2016 and 2018, countless well-loved and worn out pieces of Patagonia gear were given a second chance in Europe—saved from landfill by our expert fixers. Repaired and restored, these items were made available to the public at pop-up stores in London, Berlin and Milan. At these events, we saw first hand the insatiable appetite of our customers for real alternatives to buying new.

That’s why, since 2022, a permanent Worn Wear space selling pre-loved and patched up gear was made available to customers visiting our Berlin store. If you find yourself in Germany’s creative capital city, come check out the selection of gear that’s been fixed by expert hands—ready for a new life and many more adventures!

Currently, our Worn Wear space gives insulated jackets and vests, shells, fleeces and parkas a second life–but we’re not stopping there. Every month, more gear is added to our in-store Worn Wear offerings that are quickly snapped up by an audience ravenous for not-new products. If you’re looking for a specific style, color or size, our in-store crew will do everything in their power to find it for you. And if they can’t find what you’re searching for, they’ll offer the next best option or try to find another solution.

Reimagining our relationship with the things we own should be a life-long process. That’s why we’re bringing kids & baby clothes into this new model of consumption and ownership. Changing the next generation’s attitude to be less wasteful and more thoughtful. Less consumptive and more communal. That’s the Worn Wear way—Repair and Reuse. And whilst Worn Wear is currently only available in our Berlin store, don’t panic! We have big plans. Pre-loved Patagonia gear will be coming to stores near you soon, bringing more than just a positive environmental impact with it.

Working together with the United Repair Center in Amsterdam, we’re fixing more than just clothes and gear. Combining our quest for circularity with our responsibility to make a positive social impact, items are sent to a repair center that provides training and employment opportunities to young adults and newcomers with a refugee background. This means Patagonia products purchased through our Worn Wear program not only save good gear from landfill—they’re making a positive social impact too!

Each Worn Wear item that has been lovingly repaired comes with more than just a history. It comes with a future too. Because all Worn Wear items are covered by our Ironclad Guarantee. This means if your gear gets damaged—because the best adventures don’t always go to plan—you can bring it back to the store for another repair. Keeping your stuff in play as long as possible is one of the most responsible things we can do as consumers. Our Worn Wear program is here to help you do that. Fixing the holes in your not-so-new gear’s story again, and again and again...

Ironclad Guarantee

We guarantee everything we make. If you are not satisfied with one of our products at the time you receive it, or if one of our products does not perform to your satisfaction, return it to the store you bought it from or to Patagonia for a repair, replacement or refund.
