In short, before purchasing your ideal bike do some research about its components, and also check for reviews online.

Overview of components

When it comes to wheels, the 8.5 DS bike is equipped with the 700c aluminum model. These are the most popular wheels for road, aero, gravel, cyclocross, race, and gravel bikes. However, these wheels don’t perform so well when passing over obstacles.

When you want to stop the bike in time, the brakes are vital. The 8.5 DS has Hydraulic Disc brakes. With Hydraulic Disc brakes, you’ll be able to stop on a dime, even in wet or icy conditions. To sum up, you can ride your bike with confidence.

GF frame design Comfortable

Heavy Entry level components

I've been an avid cyclist & bike builder for 15+ years and while I have more than my share of dedicated road bikes & mountain bikes this is my first multi-purpose bike. While road bikes are great on the asphalt the thin tires are poor in gravel. Similarly mountain bikes are great in the rough, but a chore to crank any distance on the road. As a year round Pacific Northwest commuter I finally decided to purchase the Trek 8.3 DS to smooth out the increasingly poor road conditions. I've found the Trek 8.3 DS to be an excellent ride. No bones about it, it's a pig. I ride a 21" frame which tips the scales at 35 lbs (with full fenders, lights & bar ends) when similar mountain bikes are under 30 lbs. That would be a real issue if I expected to ride single track or really take it off road. However, as a daily commuter (20 miles a day) or weekend rides with the family it truly excels. It's comfortable and the frame provides good power transfer. The components are entry level & I expect to upgrade the brakes, shifters & derailleurs as they fail. That being said they do their job well at present. All in all the Trek 8.3 DS is great at it's job, being a dependable commuter rig that dances the line between asphalt & gravel. If you're looking to carve single track & take drops get a mountain bike. If you're hoping to outrun roadies on the asphalt get a drop bar equipped road bike with 23c tires. If you're hoping to smooth out a bumpy commute on mixed surfaces or simply want a bike that will allow you to ride gravel rail-to-trails as well as get you to the grocery then you couldn't do much better than the Trek 8.3 DS.

Money and performance ratio is just outstanding. Nice frame geometry - very comfortable and strong. It is pretty light compared with other similar bicycles.

Stock pedals are pretty bad (at least I didn't liked it) and breaks are cheap and horribly squeaky (no mater how much you try to fix it)

I was long looking for a bicycle worth money I can afford. In the end I chose this bicycle and till now I really enjoy my choice. From the first ride I felt in love with it. It was comfortable and very fast. Before I was used to bike only on roads, but this bicycle showed me that trails and mountains are much more rewarding experience. Geometry of the bike fitted me from the beginning. The frame is really strong and now when I mostly biking in forests and mountain trails, the bike stands out great on any conditions and even aggressive biking. Only one disadvantage which I found after few months was breaks. They are pretty powerful, but the noise that it made started to get unbearable (especially when riding in the city), no mater how much you try to maintain them. So the best solution is to invest in quick upgrade like Avid BB5 or even better ones BB7. Tires what comes with bike is great for road and light dry trails, but it's not very suitable for off road or mountain biking and wet conditions. So it depends only on preference of riding style, if you want to upgrade for something with more grip. So for summary I can say that this bicycle worth all the money you pay for. You get outstanding entry/midrange level bicycle suitable for road and cross-country (XC) riding.

I researched this bike purchase pretty hard. For the money...for the features...for the components...for the performance...it can't be beat.

Of course I'd like a better group. I'd like a better fork. But show me a deal where you get the components of this bike...and it's geometry (Gary Fisher designed...and it don't get better than that), for the price...and I will say...Awesome deal.

I bought my last bike (a GT Avalanche) when I got out of the army in 1990. It served me well. And continues to do so...I put studded tires on it and made it my winter bike. I live in Wisconsin. But this bike blows it away. The GT had a more aggressive riding position. It was...at the time...a race bike. But it was heavy. Chromoly frame. As my riding habits over the years switched from hardcore mountain biking to more pavement/hardpack...I switched to Ritchey Speedmax tires...which blows your typical 26" knobby away. the 700c tires on the 8.3 blow the 26" Ritcheys away ( I am in no way ripping on the Ritchey Speedmax tire...which for a 'city' mountain bike is your only choice). If your typical ride is in an urban setting...with the occansional trails thrown into the mix, you can't buy a better bike for the money.

1990 GT Avalanche

I ride mostly asphalt roads, very fast, very quiet, everything works perfectly.

The first thing that I will change will be the pedals, I will keep an eye to the brakes, for now I have no complaints.

Very pleasant to look at, very easy to ride, excellent value for the price, I bought mine this week ( blue ) and I love it, this is my 3rd Trek bike ( Road, MTB, Dual Sport ), as usual I am very happy with, I ride mostly asphalt roads, very fast, very quiet, everything works perfectly.

Very good value for money. Geometry is brilliant! The best hybrid bike you can get. Very easy to climb with.

Tires, fork, brakes.

I love my trek 8.3 ds bike! In the last six months I have been ridding it every day to work and back, about 20 km a day, with ~150 meters climb each direction and part of it is off road. The ride is great. I love to climbs uphill with it. And it is superfast.

kona kula with city tires, trek 9700 carbon with city tires.

Good for the money.

Brakes need to be constantly adjusted. Screws push out of the pedals.

I bought this bike about 5 weeks ago to use as a commuter and something that I could use on light trails, on the weekends. It is a good bike for the money but there are a couple of things that were cheaped out on by Trek. The brakes need to be constantly adjusted. I get them perfect, ride for about 20 miles and then they are rubbing badly again. Or they get loose. The screws push out of the pedals and you have to take the reflector off to screw it back in. It has those cheap plastic reflectors that just push in and I break them when I take them off. The tires aren’t cheap. But they suck for both road and trails. I think they were going for a happy medium and missed both. Either way if you ride hard you will probably want to upgrade your bike components if you buy anything under $1000. But 5 weeks in I have to replace pedals and want to replace the brakes and the tires. I am happy with it though.

Frame, Ride Position, Fast, Lockout Suspension

Expensive, Brakes, Suspension Travel

I bought a Trek 8.3 recently not really knowing what I was getting into. I asked for a commuter bike with offroad capabilities claiming I would only do light trails. Unfortunatly, I fell in love with the mountains. Trek allowed me to trade it in for a Marlin. This bike is not very capable if you plan to go trailing. I got a flat tire 13 miles from my house and had to walk home (my fault for not purchasing a tire fix kit I guess). For what it claims, it's a phenominal bike. I could not have been happier. It's fast, fun and pretty good looking as well. Just need something a little more rugged. Also, the Giant Roam 2 (same price) has hydraulic disc brakes and comes with 9 speeds. Just something to think about if you puchase a bike like this.

Light Geometry Riding position Comfort Speed

None so far

Bike is fast on both the road and trail. Lockout fork is a must on a dual sport machine and this one works well. The bike feels lighter than my 4300 even though it is a larger frame. The large 700c wheels roll very fast and smooth. This bike is a killer on the tow path and country roads!

Khabarovsk: The city on the 5,000 ruble banknote

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Where to go on a first date with the city

Source: Lori/Legion-Media

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

2013 trek 8.5 ds

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors.

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

2013 trek 8.5 ds

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. Take a selfie here with a view of the Amur River at the monument to Count Muravyov-Amursky.

History of Khabarovsk Krai

In the Middle Ages, the territory of today’s Khabarovsk Krai was inhabited mainly by the peoples of the Tungus-Manchu language group, as well as Nivkhs. In China they were known collectively as “wild Jurchen”. In the 13th-14th centuries, the Mongol rulers of China repeatedly organized expeditions to the lower Amur.

Russians began the development of the Far East in the 17th century. In 1639, a Cossack troop headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The first stockade town was built in the mouth of the Ulya River. Later, Vasily Danilovich Poyarkov and Yerofei Pavlovich Khabarov were the first who started joining the Amur lands to Russia. Before Russians came here, the tribes of Daurs, Evenks, Natks, Gilyaks and others lived in this area (only about 30 thousand people).

The area was quickly populated by Russian settlers; new stockade towns were founded. But the process was interrupted due to a conflict with the Qing Dynasty. From the 1680s, Manchus started to fight against the Russian state.

Russia could not move significant military forces to the Amur region and had to sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689). According to it, Russians had to leave the left bank of the Amur River but managed to uphold its rights for the area behind Lake Baikal and the Sea of Okhotsk coast.

In the 18th century, Okhotsk became the main Pacific port of the Russian Empire. Development of the northern coast of the Pacific, exploration of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin prepared the basis for the return of the Amur region.

In 1847, Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov was appointed a governor-general of Eastern Siberia. He did his best to return the Amur area to the Russian Empire. The number of Russians in the region began to grow. In 1858, the town of Khabarovsk was founded.

As a result of the weakening of China during the Opium Wars, two agreements were signed - the Aigun Treaty in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860. The Russian-Chinese border was established on the Amur and Ussuri rivers.

In 1884, Zabaikalskaya, Amurskaya and Primorskaya regions were united into Priamurskoye region with the center in Khabarovsk. Until the late 19th century, the Amur area was settled slowly. The situation changed in the early 20th century. In 1900, the Trans-Baikal Railway was opened, in 1902 - the Chinese Eastern Railway.

As a result, the number of settlers grew rapidly. In 1900-1913, about 300,000 peasants from other regions of the Russian Empire came to the Amur area. There were three towns (Khabarovsk, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and Okhotsk) on the territory, which makes Khabarovsk krai today. By 1915, there were more than six thousand settlements with a total population of 316,300 people in Primorskaya oblast.

The Civil War lead to a great number of deaths and economic collapse in Russia. The restoration of pre-war level of economy was achieved by 1926. New cities were built in the region - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Birobidzhan. October 20, 1938, Dalnevostochny region was divided into Khabarovsky and Primorsky regions.

In 1947-1948, Sakhalin and Amur regions were separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1953, Magadan region was formed and separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1956, Kamchatka region became independent too. In 1991, the Jewish autonomous region was separated from Dalnevostochny region.

2013 trek 8.5 ds

At the beginning of 2022, Delny will replace Khabarovsk in the Tech Tree. She is a more logical development of the branch concept and is similar in gameplay to Tashkent, while not having the same big difference in characteristics with the branch as Khabarovsk. The most significant difference from Tashkent will be the improved armor of the ship.

After the replacement of the ships, the following changes will be made to the Destroyer Khabarovsk:

  • Khabarovsk will become a Special ship - The cost of the ship's post-battle service will be decreased. You will be able to assign commanders from other Ships of the same nation without penalties and retraining. Current commanders will keep their specialty.
  • The ship will be added in Armory for Coal.
  • Khabarovsk will remain on the accounts of its owners. If the ship was researched but not bought, sold, or the branch was reset, she will be invoiced to the player's account.
  • The ship will keep its unique upgrade and any purchased permanent camouflages. If permanent camouflage Type 20 was not bought - it will be credited.

All players who own any permanent camouflage for Khabarovsk will receive the Type 20 permanent camouflage for Delny. The ship herself can only be obtained after researching and purchasing it in the tech tree.

Permanent Camouflage for Moskva

In update 0.9.5, the branch of Soviet cruisers saw a similar change in the tech tree, when Moskva was replaced by A. Nevsky. As part of those changes, players who owned permanent camouflages for the cruiser Moscow did not receive any permanent camouflages for A. Nevsky.

Now the rules for crediting camouflages when replacing ships in the Tech Tree have changed, and we decided to credit additional camouflages to the owners of the cruiser Moskva.

All players who had any permanent camouflages for Moskva on their accounts at the time of the release of Update 0.9.5 will receive the Type 20 permanent camouflage for A. Nevsky within a week after the release of Update 0.10.9. Those who already have the Type 20 camouflage will be compensated with 5000 doubloons.
