Excellent Acropolis tour

My family only had one day in Athens and wanted to make the most of it. Our tour included the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and a walk through the surrounding neighborhoods. It was informative and lots of fun. Had we tried to do this on our own I'm sure my kids would have pooped out after an hour or two- the tour kept us going for hours! Pricy, but if you can afford this I recommend it highly.

The best Acropolis tour with kids – Alternative Athens review

Visiting the ancient Acropolis is unmissable during a family holiday in Athens, but this is one time where it definitely pays to arrange a guide for an Acropolis tour with kids.

Because while the site itself is fascinating, dating back around 2,500 thousand years, looking at the ruins isn’t going to keep most children enthralled, without knowing the stories behind them and the significance of what they’re seeing.

And if you’re looking for the best Acropolis tour with kids, it’s hard to beat the Young Heroes family mythology tour from Alternative Athens, as we discovered during our trip.

While I’d visited the Acropolis several times on previous visits, it was my daughter’s first chance to explore properly – and as a huge fan of Greek myths, I knew that a tour focused around gods, goddesses, heroes and legends would appeal.

And that turned out to be an understatement. After more than three hours exploring the Acropolis site, including the Parthenon, as well as visit to Pnyx Hill, our tour guide Vasia kept her enthralled and entertained throughout.

After meeting at the Acropolis metro station, just a minute’s walk from the entrance, we settled in to learn more about the history of the site – accompanied by one of the Acropolis cats, who had evidently worked out tourists were a good source of strokes.

While it’s not exactly the key reason to visit, spotting the string of cats, who’d each appropriated a temple or area of the site as their own personal territory, was definitely the icing on the cake for my daughter!

With a drawing of some of the major gods in the pantheon in front of us, and some fun quiz questions to get us drawn into the stories, we started in the theatre of Dionysus, learning more about this particular fun-loving god, before moving on to the Sanctuary of Asclepius, to learn more about the hero and god of medicine.

Top trivia: Did you know that the word Acropolis literally means ‘high city’?

Intertwined with the myths, including their usual dramatic family histories and events, there’s a chance to learn about the history of Athens itself – not only the building of the various sites in the Acropolis, but everything from medical treatments in Ancient Greece to theatre performances.

Which brought us neatly on to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus or Herodeon, the stone theatre in one corner of the Acropolis site which is still used for concerts to this day, hosting a string of big name performers including Sting and Elton John.

But that, of course, is only a taster of what’s to come, climbing towards the famous gate to the highest point of the Acropolis, home to its three most important temples and other significant sights like the Propylaea.

Near the gate itself, the smaller temple of Athena Nike, with the Erectheion and the Parthenon inside – via a conversation about why Athena was so important to the people of Athens, how to conserve a site like the Acropolis and how slippery marble gets in the rain!

Not to mention another discussion about a particular big-name sports brand which took its own name from Nike, the goddess of victory.

While the Parthenon gets all the glory (understandably), the Erectheion has the best stories. This smaller temple, decorated with the famous caryatids, is said to be the site where Poseidon had challenged Athena for control of the city.

As god of the sea, Poseidon struck the floor of the temple with his trident to make water flow, before Athena struck the ground with her spear and made an olive tree grow. To this day, there’s an ancient olive tree to the side of the building, said to be a descendent of the original – the current tree was planted in 1952 from a cutting made during the Second World War.

What I hadn’t realised was that if you go around the side of the Erectheion, there’s a gap in the temple where Poseidon’s jet of water was said to have gushed towards the heavens.

The Alternative Athens family tour of the Acropolis isn’t just about history either, we got plenty of tips about the best places to take photos (as well as having a few shots of the pair of us in front of the Parthenon too).

The Parthenon itself can feel hard to appreciate once you’ve marvelled at its size – that is, until you hear the stories of what it would once have been like inside. Once it housed a huge gold and ivory statue of the goddess, with a pool of water in front of it, designed both to reflect the light and illuminate Athena, as well as to moisten the air and preserve the ivory.

And the famous scenes depicted on the Parthenon frieze around the outside of the temple, might once have been brightly painted, we learned – a far cry from the pale marble you see today.

Vasia was also great at explaining the significance of the panels in the frieze too, from the order of the images to the little details – something we would never have known without an expert tour guide.

And where better to finish an Acropolis tour with kids? On nearby Pnyx Hill. While that might sound an odd place to finish, for starters you get a fantastic view back to the Acropolis in its own hilltop setting.

But Pnyx Hill is interesting in its own right too. Known as the birthplace of democracy, it’s here that orators like Aristotle would once have addressed the crowds.

These days, it’s a rather more peaceful spot, although you can still see the area where speakers would have declaimed – and a great place for one final creative challenge for kids, to design their own hero.

With so many tales from Greek myth to inspire, not to mention the thought of one of those cats being a hero in disguise, it was the perfect experience for kids – and a huge amount of fun for adults too.

Acropolis tour with kids: need to know

The Alternative Athens Young Heroes family mythology tour costs 65 Euros for adults, 52 Euros for kids aged 6-17 for a three-hour tour (ages 5 and under are free).

Tickets for the Acropolis are not included in the price – it’s easy to buy these individually or get combination tickets for other sites in Athens, although Alternative Athens can also advise. You may need to buy tickets direct to get discounted rates for children, if they aren’t EU citizens.

It runs at 9.30am daily from mid June to the end of August, with a maximum of 15 people in the group. Private tours are also available year-round, including alternative times during the day.

If you’re visiting during the summer months, especially during peak summer, bear in mind that there’s very little shade around the Acropolis and it can get extremely hot – bring plenty of water, and hats/suntan lotion are essential.

Don’t miss a visit to the Acropolis Museum as well, which houses artefacts taken from the Acropolis site. It’s best to visit the museum after you’ve explored the site itself, as the displays are set out in the same order as the temples and buildings that you visit, so it’s easy to visualise them in their original homes.

There are also some great family backpacks to borrow in the museum, which will appeal to younger kids especially, plus some little family information boards dotted around the museum too.

Please note that there are no "Skip the line" tickets in Greece.

There is only one type of ticket (that might vary only at the price depending on the age or other locations you are able to visit with the same ticket). Everybody go into the sights from the same entrances. There are no separate or side entrances that only people with licensed tour guides or with "different type" of tickets may enter.

What is sold as "Skip the lines" tickets, is that you do not wait at the kiosk to get the tickets.

Americans say they hate tourist traps. They also can't stop visiting them.

• Around 89% of Americans have recently visited tourist traps, according to a PhotoAiD survey.
• Nearly 70% of respondents also said visiting a tourist trap decreased their trip enjoyment.
• One-third said they visited a tourist trap because their friends or family wanted to go.

"I can't wait for my trip to France — I'm planning to visit all the tourist traps!"… is not something you'll typically hear a Paris-bound traveler say, even if their itinerary consists entirely of the top recommended things to do in every guidebook — the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame — and little else.

Despite all the negative connotations around "tourist traps," most travelers to a new place can't help but visit the sites that attract a lot of tourists.

Around 89% of Americans say they've visited a tourist trap at least two times in the past two years, according to a recent survey by PhotoAiD , a tech company that develops apps for taking biometric photos like those used in passports. The online survey, conducted in September 2023, included 1,002 US-based respondents who had planned a trip in the past two years.

Only 1% of respondents said they hadn't visited a single tourist trap in that timeframe.

There's room for debate over what exactly counts as a tourist trap — can the historic and gorgeous Venice canals really be considered a tourist trap, even with the souvenir vendors and flocks of selfie-taking visitors?

According to the survey, the primary factors that earn a site the title of tourist trap are low attendance or avoidance by local residents, amenities primarily designed for tourists, a lack of cultural or historical authenticity, high levels of foot traffic, and lots of souvenir shops along with aggressive promotional and sales tactics.

When presented with a list of potential tourist traps around the world and asked which ones were the most "trappy," the respondents ranked Skylon Tower at Niagara Falls, Moulin Rouge in Paris, and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland among the worst.

When asked about the US specifically, the respondents said the worst tourist traps were Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico.

As for whether popular places like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre count as tourist traps, that likely depends on whether you think the historical and cultural bonafides outweigh the huge crowds, vendors selling cheap trinkets, and the offensively high tourist-to-local ratio.

Although nearly all respondents acknowledged recently visiting a tourist trap, almost 70% said their visit to a tourist trap diminished their overall enjoyment of their trip. Only around 13% said it actually added enjoyment to their trip.

So why do Americans keep visiting these places?

It would appear social factors are largely to blame.

A third of respondents said they went because their family or friends wanted to go (though you have to wonder if said family or friends would give the same reason), while nearly 20% said they went because it was highly recommended.

Other reasons cited included curiosity or personal interest, the site being considered a landmark , and that it was part of a tour package.

When offered advice on how to avoid falling into a tourist trap, the survey respondents said the most helpful tip was to "visit well-known landmarks, but don't make them the sole focus of your trip."

Avoiding so-called tourist traps, or at least spending less time at them, could also help curb the impacts of overtourism .

Tourism experts previously told Business Insider that spreading out tourists who otherwise congregate at the same places at the exact same times can help destinations manage overwhelming numbers of tourists.

The service, which grew over 60% year-over-year, announced a suite of major league channels that will deliver live sports from Major League Baseball (MLB), The PGA TOUR, the American Hockey League (AHL), and ONEChampionship (MMA), along with Formula 1’s first FAST channel. Highlights include:

• MLB: Samsung TV Plus and MLB are partnering up to bring the best of baseball coverage to FAST, allowing viewers to enjoy the MLB FAST channel with a weekly game replay, Minor league game replays, and game recaps, among other content exclusives to come later in the season.
• PGA TOUR: This new offering will deliver total coverage on all things PGA TOUR, with behind the scenes programming, documentaries, tournament recaps, highlights, competitions, and more.
• AHL: Samsung TV Plus will be the first FAST platform to air live American Hockey League games through the Los Angeles Kings affiliate, the Ontario Reign.
• Formula One Channel: We’re also delighted to have Formula 1’s brand new FAST Channel at launch. The Formula 1 Channel is the ultimate destination for fans to catch up on all the action from F1, F2, F3 and F1 Academy races throughout the season, including analysis, replays and documentaries.
• ONE Championship TV: The launch of ONE Championship TV will bring combat sports content to the service. Featuring unique live events to TV Plus, highlights, series and behind-the scenes access from the world’s largest martial arts organization.

Music, Mattel, and More Arrive Exclusively

For lovers of music, Samsung TV Plus is announcing an exclusive partnership with Warner Music, which will bolster the nearly 500 existing premium national and local channels already on Samsung TV Plus. The Warner Music content will be found in Samsung TV Plus’ recently launched dedicated Music destination, and will feature exclusive music playlists like:

• The Drop : A video on demand playlist experience that will tie to the launch of new album releases and will feature artist’s career retrospectives, behind the scenes content, interviews, premiere and new album content.
• Artist Odyssey : A chronological journey through a Warner artist’s catalog. There will be never-before-heard stories about the videos that impacted generations—all told through firsthand accounts from friends, video directors, label heads, artist managers, fans, and sometimes the artists themselves.

These channels come on the heels of Samsung’s milestone partnership with Mattel to launch three new channels, “Barbie and Friends by Mattel,” “Hot Wheels Action by Mattel,” and “Mattel Jr.” making the most iconic kids brands available to families across the country for the first time ever, on a premium, brand-safe FAST platform, accessible through a dedicated kids entertainment hub.

Samsung to Launch New Interactive Gaming Experiences

Advertisers can sponsor Rivals Arena with interstitials in between gameplay and endemic brands will have an opportunity to cobrand the entire game experience.
• The Six: The Six is an interactive trivia game built directly into a Samsung connected device. Anyone with a Samsung TV remote can play The Six directly on their TV, while advertisers can cobrand the entire experience to drive brand engagement and recall.
