Where to go in December for adventure

adventure trips in december

December travel opens the door for a plethora of perfectly timed adventures. Put your boots (and thighs) to the test on some of the planet’s wildest terrain; venture into a colourful underwater world; or embrace your inner speed freak on white water and even whiter mountains.

Wherever you sit on the thrill-seeker spectrum, these experiences offer everything from ‘wow’ moments to once-in-a-lifetime adrenaline hits.

Mountain range and turquoise lake of the Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Go to the wild ends of the Earth as spring turns to summer

Jagged peaks, gargantuan glaciers, pumas stalking guanacos across vast landscapes – everything is epic in South America’s uttermost reaches. Including the weather: you don’t want to mess with Patagonia in the austral winter. Come in December, as spring slips into summer but before peak tourist season bites. Top billing goes to Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park , which demands to be explored on foot, on the eight-day circuit or four-day ‘W’ trek for views of the granite towers and Los Cuernos (the ‘horns’). In Argentina , 197ft-high (60m) Perito Moreno Glacier calves massive icebergs, while south of the ‘Land of Fire’, Tierra del Fuego , the Americas finally peter out at Cape Horn.

  • Trip plan: For a two- or three-week itinerary, fly from Santiago to Puerto Montt and board the Navimag ferry for a four-day cruise through fjords to Puerto Natales. Hike Torres del Paine and gape at the ice giants of Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, then head south to Punta Arenas (via Magellanic penguin colonies) and Tierra del Fuego.
  • Need to know: Patagonia gets busier as December progresses; book accommodation and ferry tickets early. Nationals of UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand currently don't need visas for either Argentina or Chile; however, a reciprocity fee may be payable. Check with an embassy before travel.
  • Other months: Dec-Mar – warmer, trekking season; Apr-Aug – cold, many hotels closed, trails snow-covered; Sep-Nov – spring.

A group of people raft down choppy waters of the Franklin River, Tasmania

Raft the river wild amid Tasmania’s dramatic mountains and rainforest

A couple of words in the name Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park provide a hint. This wonderful wilderness area in Tasmania ’s remote central west is a rugged expanse of over 1700 sq miles (4400 sq km) encompassing mountain, rainforest and those two eponymous roaring waterways. The 80-mile (129km) run down the Franklin from Collingwood Bridge to Sir John Falls on the Gordon River is one of the world’s great rafting trips, punctuated by rocky gorges including the aptly named Great Ravine, mighty trees (including 3000-year-old Huon pines) and surging rapids, in the company of native wildlife including platypus, quolls and wallabies. December is prime time to take on the Franklin, in the long, warming days of early summer – though even then only a few hundred tackle the challenge each year. Don’t expect luxury or an easy ride; do expect full wilderness immersion and unrivalled thrills.

  • Trip plan: Several experienced operators offer tours of between five and 14 days, longer trips often including the hike up 4744ft (1446m) Frenchman’s Cap for far-reaching views.
  • Need to know: Weather can change rapidly. Bring clothing for all conditions, remembering you’ll be camping for several consecutive nights.
  • Other months: Dec-Mar – summer, most settled conditions; May-Oct – cooler, often wet; Nov & Apr – commercial trips also run.

Skier going through powdery snow in Alta, Utah

Ski some of the USA’s finest powder pistes before the peak season

When it snows in Alta, it really snows. On average, 46ft (14m) of the stuff – most of it the softest powder – dumps here each year, and with 2200 acres (890 hectares) of skiable terrain, there’s a lot of options for making the most of it. Alta opens mid to late November, but December is the ideal time to arrive, with deep snow pretty much guaranteed but peak season yet to kick in. There’s plenty for everyone at this old-time resort (opened in 1939), with 25% beginner, 40% intermediate and 35% advanced runs. Aprés is gentle and there’s a family friendly, inclusive atmosphere.

  • Trip plan: Alta is 27 miles (43km) southeast of Salt Lake City in Utah. There are five lodges at the ski area, plus condos and vacation homes nearby and ample accommodation in Salt Lake City.
  • Need to know: Snowboarders aren’t allowed on Alta’s slopes – but it’s linked at Sugarloaf Pass to Snowbird resort, which almost doubles the terrain area and has plenty for boarders; a joint lift pass is available.
  • Other months: Mid-Nov– mid Apr – Alta ski area open; Late May – Snowbird closes; Jun-Sep – summer activities.

Two clownfish swim around a sea anemone

Experience some of the world’s best diving around Thailand’s Similan Islands

Fringed with dazzling white beaches and kaleidoscopic coral reefs, the 11 islands of Mu Ko Similan National Park are endlessly spectacular – and never more so than in December, early in the dry season. At this time of year the water off Thailand ’s Andaman Coast is clear (visibility is 25m to 40m; 80ft to 130ft) and calm – perfect for snorkelling or diving among marine life large and small. As well as dizzyingly diverse reef fish, expect to swim alongside sharks, barracuda, rays, and green and hawksbill turtles, which nest in this area between November and February. True, this is hardly an unknown paradise – beaches and snorkelling spots can get overcrowded, and park authorities have banned tourists from Ko Tachai to protect the coral – but it’s a dream destination for divers.

  • Trip plan: The national park authority runs basic bungalows on Ko Similan and Ko Miang (Island No 4). Many operators offer day trips to the Similan Islands from Khao Lak on the mainland, but for the best underwater action join a live-aboard dive boat from Khao Lak or Phuket, which has direct flights from Bangkok and several international cities.
  • Need to know: Prices rise towards Christmas – try to book earlier in December for cheaper deals.
  • Other months: Nov-Apr – dry, warm; mid-May–Oct – national park closed during rainy season.

The end of the year is incredibly busy with gift shopping, decorating for the holidays, and family gatherings. So before you run out of open days, take some time to book that winter vacation — even if it’s just a weekend getaway. Whether you’re looking for a warm-weather escape to end the year or a festive destination brimming with holiday cheer, we’ve got you covered. From ski towns to beach resorts, here are 11 of the best places to travel in December.

Lake Tahoe, California

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

Snowfall usually begins in late November in Lake Tahoe, so you can be one of the first to hit the slopes when you visit in December. The destination’s sapphire blue lake, pine forests, and snow-covered peaks are gorgeous this time of year. Stay on the south shore at Edgewood Lake Tahoe , which hosts holiday festivities throughout the month; the resort’s new multi-bedroom Villa Suites are perfect for families or groups. On the north shore, Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe features ski-in/ski-out access and a mountainside concierge. Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe and Edgewood Lake Tahoe were both among Travel + Leisure’s Best Resorts in the Western United States in 2022. Nearby Reno Tahoe offers a wide range of winter activities and a convenient airport with flights from many major cities.

Palm Springs, California

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If you’re looking for mild weather, superb restaurants, golf, plush hotels, spas, and great shopping, put Palm Springs on your December must-visit list. And at just two hours from Los Angeles and San Diego, the Greater Palm Springs area is easy to reach. Check the concert and sports events schedule at the new Acrisure Arena , which hosted Cirque du Soleil’s new Corteo this summer — a first for the desert venue. Lodging ranges from expansive resorts like the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort to boutique and adult-only properties. Stay just steps from downtown Palm Springs in a quiet and historic neighborhood at Auric House ; you’ll feel like a local as you stroll to restaurants, shops, and breakfast at nearby Korakia Pensione .

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston topped the T+L World’s Best Awards list this year for favorite cities in the United States, and it’s a perfect destination for the holidays, with gorgeous decorations adorning historic buildings, streets, and neighborhoods. Christmas markets, tree lightings, parades, and seasonal events inspire the holiday spirit during December. The Charleston Place gets decked out for the season, and other popular Charleston hotels include the Emeline , Planters Inn (a Relais & Châteaux property), and The Vendue , Charleston’s art hotel.

Newport Beach, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

With weather in the 60s and lots of Southern California sunshine, Newport Beach is a great December destination for hiking, cruising the harbor in a Duffy boat, whale watching, visiting Balboa Island, or strolling along the beach. The city celebrates the holiday season with the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade each night from Dec. 13-17, when more than 100 decorated yachts, boats, kayaks, and canoes cruise the waterfront, along with music, fireworks, and glittering lights. Stay near the action at Lido House , an Autograph Collection hotel, or be among the first to stay at the new Pendry Newport Beach . For five-star luxury, two oceanfront golf courses, and stunning views, choose The Resort at Pelican Hill . Accommodation options here include bungalow rooms and suites with fireplaces and private terraces, as well as Mediterranean-style villas with two, three, or four bedrooms.

Branson, Missouri

tomofbluesprings/Getty Images

In Branson, the two-month-long Ozark Mountain Christmas celebration kicks off in early November, and it’s an incredible way to get into the holiday spirit. Known as “America’s Christmas Tree City” for good reason, Branson features more than 1,500 decorated trees, shows, parades, 6.5 million lights, drive-through displays , and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. Throughout December, there’s caroling by the fire, story times, and a candy village displayed in the lobby of the Chateau on the Lake . At Big Cedar Lodge , guests can sip hot cocoa, see twinkling holiday lights, skate at the Winter Wonderland ice rink, make wreaths, and bake gingerbread — and that’s just a few of the property’s annual Home for the Holidays activities.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Nikada/Getty Images

December is considered one of the best months to visit Dubai thanks to moderate weather that’s ideal for being outdoors exploring the city. Visitors will find a festive atmosphere and myriad seasonal events , from elaborately decorated Christmas trees and holiday markets to shopping malls decked out for the season. See public art in the Dubai Design District, lounge at the beachfront in La Mer, or visit the historic Al Fahidi District. Stay at the elegant Habtoor Palace , LXR Hotels & Resorts, or the plush Burj Al Arab Jumeirah . Welcoming guests starting Dec. 1, One&Only One Za’abeel is located in the heart of the city near the Dubai World Trade Centre. The Lana , Dorchester Collection, Dubai, will also open in December beside the Dubai Canal.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula along the Caribbean, Riviera Maya is 30 minutes south of Cancun and offers calm seas, sandy beaches, sunny weather, and lodging for all tastes, from boutique hotels to lavish resorts. Maya archaeological sites are fascinating to explore, and cenotes — caves or underground holes filled with cool water — are another intriguing feature of the Yucatan. Mayakoba , a private community with nearly 600 acres of lagoons, jungles, and beaches, includes El Camaleón Golf Club , luxury residences, and four resorts: Fairmont Mayakoba , Andaz Mayakoba , Banyan Tree Mayakoba , and Rosewood Mayakoba . Celebrate the new year with legendary Mexican musician Luis Miguel in concert on Dec. 31 at the nearby golf course. Also in Riviera Maya is Maroma , A Belmond Hotel, now open after an extensive renovation and redesign led by Tara Bernerd & Partners .

Vienna, Austria

Ambika Verma/Travel + Leisure

While Vienna is lovely year-round, it is dazzling in December, with holiday decorations, lights, markets, and Christmas trees galore. Delicious Austrian food is part of the celebration, and mugs of Christmas punch (made with rum and/or brandy) keep shoppers warm as they browse or sample wiener schnitzel, sausage, apple strudel, or traditional roasted chestnuts. Or, stop into a café for coffee and Sachertorte, a famous Austrian chocolate cake. T+L readers recently voted for their favorite Vienna hotels , and The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna took the top spot. The Rosewood Vienna , which just opened last year, and The Amauris Vienna , a Relais & Châteaux property, are also fine options. Note that river cruises are a great way to see Europe’s many Christmas markets, and itineraries are offered through several companies, including AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises , and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises .

Fort Worth, Texas

Think about this lively Texas city for an end-of-year vacation or weekend getaway, when the weather is in the comfortable high 50s and there’s so much to do. The Fort Worth Zoo features holiday decorations, lights, falling snow, and visits from Santa in December. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District , where ranchers once traded cattle and cowboys drove the animals to market, is still in action with a daily longhorn cattle drive, restaurants, rodeo shows, bars, and tours of the original wooden corrals. Stay at Hotel Drover , in the heart of the District, where holiday decor and activities add to the fun. Near the downtown Sundance Square entertainment area, Kimpton Harper Hotel is set in a historic building that was once the tallest in Fort Worth. The Crescent Hotel, Fort Worth opens this autumn and features a Canyon Ranch Wellness Club with a full menu of fitness classes and spa treatments.

U.S. Virgin Islands

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. Whether you travel to the Caribbean for the beaches, water sports, outdoor adventures, shopping, or nightlife, these islands have myriad options. Join the fun at St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival, which begins Dec. 10 and combines Caribbean, African, Spanish, and Dutch influences in traditional carnival events. The closing parade happens on Jan. 6, when thousands of masqueraders fill the streets. Among accommodation options are the waterfront King Christian Hotel in downtown Christiansted, St. Croix and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas , which hosts holiday activities throughout December. Passports are not required for travel to this United States territory.

This sunny island in the eastern Caribbean is a perfect December escape, whether you’re traveling with friends or family or looking for a romantic getaway. From relaxing on the beach or by the pool to active adventures like kitesurfing, diving, or playing golf, there are lots of fun things to do on Anguilla. Places to stay include boutique hotels, resorts, villas, and apartments at a range of prices. Consider the family-friendly Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla , Malliouhana Resort , and Frangipani Beach Resort , where there’s fun for everyone. Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel and Altamer offer private villas. Zemi Beach House on Shoal Bay Beach features a spa set in a 306-year-old Thai house.

Best Places to Visit in December

Whether you choose to chase the sun or embrace the cold, we’ve got an adventure for you. Round out the year of adventure in some of these epic destinations including exploring Antarctica’s surreal landscapes on a luxury expedition cruise, snorkeling with whale sharks in Baja’s Sea of Cortez, or festive Christmas market-hopping along the Rhine and Danube rivers.

Check out our full list of favorite places to visit this month.

A woman walking on a footbridge in tropical rain forest in Costa Rica.

From ethereal cloud forests to stunning beaches sequestered in pristine national parks, Costa Rica is a paradise for nature lovers and a perfect winter getaway. December welcomes the dry season with cooler days, making it an ideal time to explore its world-famous parks and reserves including Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano National Park, and Tortuguero National Park.

Travelers on an expedition in Antarctica.

Long days (up to 20 hours of sunlight per day!) and relatively warmer temperatures in Antarctica beckon the southern right and Antarctic minke whales back to their waters as austral birds court, nest, and tend to their eggs on the Peninsula. The soft light is perfect for photography, whether it’s catching the mesmerizing colors of icebergs or the dramatic rifts between elephant seals as they establish their territories on the beach and fights for harems.

A whale shark underwater.

The nutrient-rich waters of Baja’s Sea of Cortez attract migrating grey whales in the winter months, and December is also a great time to swim with whale sharks. Winter tends to be cooler, but with fewer rain showers, still pleasant and perfect for photographers who want to capture the blooming flora and migratory birds who have arrived to feast.

A group of tourists observing a giant tortoise in the Galápagos Islands.

As the waters warm up in the Galápagos, green sea turtles begin their mating rituals and the eggs of the giant land tortoises start to hatch. On Española, the juvenile waved albatrosses begin to leave their nests. Migratory birds and some whales will be passing through on their way south for the winter.

A woman resting at Las Torres.

For ideal hiking and camping weather, December can’t be beaten. With long, mild days and cool, clear nights (perfect for stargazing!), this month is prime for exploring Chile’s volcano-dotted Lake District and Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park, central stops on WT’s Small Group Adventures and Private Journeys.

A group of travelers on a safari observing lions and wildlife.

Tanzania is a strikingly beautiful country that offers some of Africa’s greatest bucket-list experiences, and December marks the beginning of the lush green season, where we enjoy far fewer crowds, balmy days with some chance of rain, and incredible birdwatching, as thousands of migratory birds descend upon Tarangire National Park, a hidden-gem highlight of WT’s exclusive safaris.

The Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest.

Danube River Christmas Markets

If you are planning to experience the wonders of the Danube, the holiday season is one of the best times to visit. Charming historic towns are awash in twinkling lights, jubilant festivities, and wondrous markets gleaming with handcrafted treasures. Experience Nuremberg’s magical Christkindlesmarkt, the largest and oldest Christmas Market in Germany.

12 Best Places to Visit in December

adventure trips in december

From warm weather romps in the sun and sand to the biting chill of a remote mountain town, there are many spectacular destinations to visit this winter season. Wander odiferous markets in Marrakech, Morocco; witness the Big Five in Kenya, Africa; with an educated expedition leader, explore our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone; or fly down a waterslide aboard a brand-new Disney cruise in the Bahamas. Whether you’re cashing in on your unused vacation days to visit a Nordic country for the first time, or you want to bring the kiddos somewhere exciting over their school break, like Puerto Vallarta, here are the top destinations to visit around the world in December.

Picture yourself wandering the slender streets of Morocco’s blue city, Chefchaouen, where cats are king; sleeping under the stars in a tented camp after a day exploring the Sahara Desert on a camel; trying a local favorite, pastilla, in a family home in Fes; learning the customs and traditions of the Amazigh people in the Dades Valley; and enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the markets in Marrakech. Whether you visit with a friend or sign up as a solo traveler, Intrepid Travel’s Premium Morocco in Depth tour, led by a knowledgeable local guide, will help you explore the country’s best cities on a 15-day adventure.

Winnipeg, Canada

Winnipeg, Manitoba , is an intrepid traveler’s paradise in December. It’s here, in the capital city, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, that folks come together to explore art and architecture, learn about local culture and history, and dine out at some of the best restaurants this Canadian province has to offer. Take a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint , wander around the Manitoba Museum , and explore the Nestaweya River trail via ice bikes, snowshoes, or fat tire bikes. Cross-country skiers will love Winnipeg’s Windsor Park Nordic Center , and skaters and fishermen will love the opportunities to get out on the ice. Finally, no trip to Winnipeg is complete without a visit to the well-designed Canadian Museum for Human Rights , the first museum solely dedicated to educating and inspiring visitors about human rights issues. After you’ve made a strong effort to tour the city, you’ll need sustenance. Look no further than The Forks , where you can find some of the best noshes in the city and the top shopping prospects at stores like Global Connections, Manitobah Mukluks , and Teekca’s Aboriginal Boutique.

Courtesy of Disney

Escape to the Bahamas on one of the newest ships in the Disney Cruise Line : the Disney Wish . This three or four-night cruise, which leaves out of Port Canaveral, includes Broadway-quality shows, fireworks at sea, encounters and photo opportunities with characters, first-run movie screenings, multiple swimming pools, splash zones, and a water slide. You can expect all dining experiences to be entertaining and delicious and accommodations to be comfortable, well thought out, and spacious. Disney’s Oceaneer Club is perfect for little kids ages 3-12, the Edge is fun for 11-14 year-olds, and teens ages 14-17 will dig the Vibe. And, with a mixture of adults-only spaces and access to Disney’s own private island, Castaway Cay, there’s something for everyone on this vacation.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks

Two of our country’s best national parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton , are situated near each other, making it easy to tick both off your wander list. Both parks are magical in the winter when the crowds of tourists have fallen away, and you’re left with the beauty and quiet of snowy landscapes. To make the most of your time, utilize the expert help of Natural Habitat Adventures for their week-long nature-filled Yellowstone: Ultimate Wolf & Wildlife Safari. You’ll benefit from the expertise of naturalist expedition leaders who will provide valuable context to what you’re experiencing along the way. Learn about how the wolves in the remote Lamar Valley are valuable members of the Yellowstone ecosystem, culling the population of elk and bison as a private snow coach transports you to Old Faithful and other popular attractions across the park. You’ll also ride in a horse-drawn sleigh in the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming.

Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, is home to just over 805,000 residents. Most of the city’s attractions are well-located near the vibrant city center. Choose luxe accommodations at Villa Copenhagen , allowing you to access museums, shopping, and restaurants easily. See the most extensive collection of art in the country at the National Gallery of Denmark ; learn about the Danish royal family and watch the changing of the guards at Amalienborg Palace ; wander through the 17th-century tower and observatory, The Round Tower ; and see several castles, palaces, and gardens that dot the city.

An African wildlife safari is on the bucket list for many travelers. This December, finally cross off your dream vacation and travel to Kenya, home to the Masai Mara and plenty of wild animals. The Classic Kenya 4WD Safari with Exodus Travels is designed for smaller groups who want to experience as much as possible in a shorter period. This six-night classic expedition includes three nights in a tented camp, two in a lodge, and one in a hotel. You’ll have excellent views out of the safari vehicle, whether you decide to pop your head out of the top or sit restfully in a window seat. For an extra fee, visit the Masai Mara village and join the early morning hot air balloon ride over the plains—you won’t regret it either.

The Maldives

Courtesy of Coco Collection

One of the most romantic destinations on the planet is the Maldives, a nation of 1,192 jewel-like islands in the Indian Ocean. You’ll enjoy a remote vacation with the one-island-one-resort ethos on one of the 200 inhabited islands. Bungalows are either situated in the lush jungle with a private pool or over the water attached to boardwalks. Book a stay at one of the two Coco Collection resorts—Coco Bodu Hithi or Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu. Both options offer top-notch service, excellent dining and spa offerings, beautiful accommodations, and breathtaking nature.

Chicago, Illinois

Courtesy of  Swissôtel Chicago

One of the most incredible experiences for kids in Chicago this December is an overnight stay in the Swissôtel Chicago ’s Santa Suite. Back by popular demand for the ninth year in a row, the 2,000 square-foot Presidential Suite is converted into Santa’s big city holiday getaway. New this year is a bold Chicago theme, which celebrates and honors the Windy City’s sports teams, specialty foods, and popular attractions. Kids can drop a letter to Santa in his mailbox, indulge in hot cocoa and sugary treats, and wake up to 17 whimsical Christmas trees (including one decorated in Chicago-style hot dogs) and over-the-top cheery décor. Don’t forget to peek in all the closets—Santa has an extra red suit and black boots hanging in the bedroom closet. It’s a luxurious experience like no other, one that the littlest members of your family won’t soon forget.

Oslo, Norway

The capital city of Norway, which was once a Viking trading hub, might not quickly strike you as the perfect December destination, and that’s precisely why it is. Known for its urban green spaces, a plethora of museums, and other-worldly accommodations— The Thief and Amerikalinjen , both part of the illustrious Preferred Hotels & Resorts lineup, are standouts—Oslo is a vibrant and artistic mid-sized city. Visit the Bygdøy Peninsula , where you’ll find national museums: Fram Museum , Norsk Folkemuseum , Kon-Tiki Museum , and Norwegian Maritime Museum . See the Royal Palace , Holmenkollen ski jump , and Norwegian Opera & Ballet. This vacation will offer something more distinctive and newfangled than you might be used to.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The largest city in the state of Oklahoma, with a metro population exceeding 1.4 million, Oklahoma City has a lot to offer visitors—even in December. Bring your family or friends and explore Automobile Alley, located along Broadway Avenue just north of downtown. Formerly home to the city’s car dealerships, you can still see old signs as you shop and dine in this hip arts district. Explore the Oklahoma Contemporary art center, order a beverage at Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar , and pop in the inclusive feminist Common Dear boutique. Rest your head at The National, an Autograph Hotel with some of the best culinary options in the Horse Show Capital of the World. Located in a building built in 1931, the charm and character of this place shines through in all of the open spaces. Stay here, and you’ll easily access some of the city’s best attractions and museums: First Americans Museum , Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum , Scissortail Park , National Cowboy and Western Museum , and Oklahoma City Museum of Art .

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Courtesy of Hotel Mousai

It's good to have something on the calendar to look forward to, especially a tranquil vacation at Jalisco's first and only AAA Five Diamond-rated resort. The adults-only Hotel Mousai Puerto Vallarta is just the escape you've been looking for. The gourmet all-inclusive dining package and the 24-hour room service make it easy to float from each high-end restaurant to your private accommodations, taking all of the worry out of planning and logistics. Join a tequila tasting, go snorkeling and kayaking, stretch in a yoga class, and experience the hydrotherapy ritual in the spa. Leaving the beaches of Banderas Bay, Mexico, the gem of Puerto Vallarta, will be challenging, but you'll return home relaxed and ready to sink into the cozy winter season.

Whitefish, Montana

The small mountain town of Whitefish in northwest Montana is a winter tree-filled paradise inside a snow globe. From cross-country skiing at Whitefish Lake Golf Club to snowshoeing in Glacier National Park , fat biking on Whitefish Trail, or downhill skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort , there’s much to do here in the winter season. New to the scene, Clydesdale Outpost is the perfect place to rest your head during your Montana adventure. Enjoy a barn tour or sleigh ride and revel in the vast open night sky. Bonus: each cabin has a fireplace and a private deck with a cedar hot tub.

10 Best Places to Travel in December

From powdery snow to colorful light shows, december is full of memorable scenes..

  • Copy Link copied

If you feel like you deserve a gift or two after powering through your family’s list, we don’t blame you (us, too). So why not plan a trip as a reward? Tack on some R&R time to a family visit, perhaps, or burn through some of the excess PTO that you’ve involuntarily accrued.

There are plenty of options for those deciding on where to travel this December. For long-haul trips, consider the Southern Hemisphere for a jolt of vitamin D on a new nonstop, direct flight, or make a pilgrimage to ski some of the best champagne powder in the world. Then again, why not visit Europe’s foremost festival of lights?

Here are the 10 best places to travel this December.

Penguins on a block of ice in the water.

This December, take the chance to check off Antarctica—with a cruise line or tour operator committed to sustainability and wildlife conservation, of course.

1. Antarctica

December is great for: conversation, conservation, and consternation

The South Pole is a destination that’s heating up, in every sense. Though only accessible for three to four months per year, starting each November, it’s increasingly on travelers’ radars . More worrisomely, of course, the icy landscape here is under siege from climate change, with average midwinter temperatures climbing 10 degrees over the past 60 years.

This has already impacted species like the Adélie penguins, sea-ice dependent birds whose populations have plummeted. Consider, then, a boat trip here that’s focused on conservation, a chance to both learn from onboard experts how to protect this landscape and fund those efforts. Book a voyage with luxe operator Abercrombie & Kent, and it will make a donation on your behalf to help underwrite the work of researchers at the U.S. Palmer Station there.

Where to stay

  • Book now: Le Lyrial

Since no one has opened a hotel here, the best option is one of the ultra-luxury expedition ships now piercing the ice floes, like Ponant’s 244-person Le Lyrial .

How to get there

Most Antarctic itineraries depart from Argentina’s southernmost tip, Ushuaia, a 3.5-hour flight down from Buenos Aires, which is connected to JFK on Aerolineas Argentinas among others.

2. Rovaniemi, Finland

December is great for: an immersive festive indulgence

Think of a trip to the Arctic Circle settlement of Rovaniemi as stepping into a real-life snow globe, and relish the avalanche of festive clichés that it offers—after all, it’s the official home of Santa Claus. There’s a supersized Christmas market here, overloaded with stalls selling souvenirs, and an Elf Academy where would-be helpers can take courses in how to keep Santa’s workshop humming year-round (and leave with an official degree certificate for their efforts).

Remember, too, that this is the ideal place to see the Northern Lights: that otherworldly phenomenon, caused by a combination of electricity, magnetic forces and space dust, is visible here for almost 200 nights per year, maximizing your chances of viewing an elusive spectacle.

Architecture is another reason to visit this settlement, since it was almost entirely rebuilt in the wake of World War II—thankfully, under the auspices of a world-class talent, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. He was allowed to reimagine the master plan and waggishly mapped out a city that resembled a reindeer’s head from the sky—the roads are antlers and the sports stadium is its eye.

  • Book now: Arctic Treehouse Hotel

The ultimate perch for viewing the Northern Lights is any bed at this hotel: The north-facing wall of each of its stand-alone, cabin-like suites is made of glass, so lucky visitors can watch this phenomenon in comfort. Even better, the buildings are constructed entirely of renewable Finnish wood and the hotel oversees the planting of up to 10,000 new seedlings each year in the nearby woodlands.

Finland’s national carrier Finnair is a stealth international player, offering superb service to the capital, Helsinki, from Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and NYC. Connect from there to Rovaniemi, a 90-minute flight north.

Night view of St. Louis's gateway arch, with white Christmas lights in a plaza

Where else to have yourself a merry little Christmas, than the city where Judy Garland’s character first crooned that classic in the 1945 movie?

3. St. Louis, Missouri

December is great for: a retro trip to an all-American Christmas

The Gateway Arch of St. Louis, that soaring, sleek monument to American optimism dating back to the 1960s, is the centerpiece of this month’s Winterfest, which runs through the end of the month on Kiener Plaza. Expect a rink for skating, s’mores stations, and even rentable igloos where you can hole up if the weather proves too brutal.

Come here too for festive productions like Twas The Night Before, inspired by the Clement Clarke Moore poem but remixed by the Cirque du Soleil team into a multi-disciplinary show, and a Nutcracker ballet, plus a Polar Express train simulation at the city’s historic Union Station. Visitors can also catch the two-day Unleash the Beast tour, when 30 of the world’s best pro bull riders pit stop here on their annual circuit, the animal answer to F1.

  • Book now: 21C Museum Hotel

The latest iteration of the art-obsessed boutique chainlet, founded by a pair of collectors 17 years ago in Louisville, opened in downtown St. Louis this summer, a 173-room conversion of a renovated former YMCA building that’s now festooned with edgy contemporary pieces throughout.

STL, the original home of now defunct carrier TWA, retains an impressive network of flights even today—hop there directly from Oklahoma City, Des Moines, and Phoenix, among others, this month. Southwest’s service is particularly plentiful.

Boxing Day occurs in the Bahamas on December 26.

4. Nassau, Bahamas

December is great for: a newly quick getaway to the Caribbean

The main island of this scattered archipelago has long been a quick getaway for the East Coast—just 45 minutes’ flight from South Florida, for example. This winter, easy access to it has been unlocked for the West Coast for the first time. Alaska has announced nonstop flights from both Los Angeles and Seattle, running up to four times weekly, while JetBlue will shadow it on the L.A. route, running an aircraft equipped with its better-than-business Mint class.

It’s well-timed: The country has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of its independence from the British all year, adding an extra frisson of energy to the year-round Junkanoo tradition that’s one of the country’s longest-running. We told you to visit for the summertime bash, but if you missed that window, come for the bigger, blowout bash in winter, centering on what the British (and Bahamians) call Boxing Day. The precise origins remain murky of this fusion fest, but go to the Educulture Junkanoo Museum to learn more. The most widely accepted theory involves a slave owner giving his enslaved people the day off and deeding a version of his name, John Canoe, to the festivities.

  • Book now: Baha Mar

Baha Mar encompasses the Rosewood, SLS, and a Grand Hyatt. There are plenty of activities offered among the three of them, whether that be spending time in the casino or feeding turtles and nurse sharks in the sanctuary. Plus, the property offers more than 40 dining and nightlife options.

In addition to the new West Coast routes, there are nonstop flights to NAS from Charlotte, Dallas, Chicago, and Philadelphia, all on American Airlines.

Distant dusk view of Hokkaido from the top of a ski jump

Hokkaido is a popular ski destination, but there are other ways to enjoy the snow.

5. Hokkaido, Japan

December is great for: powder-chasing in the northern reaches of Japan

Japan ’s prime powder region, Hokkaido, is one of the most reliable places to plan a ski trip worldwide. Come in December and the pistes are at their peak with some of the deepest champagne powder in the world, but don’t stick to the popular runs. Head to Iwanai on the coast, a village where a ski resort was built in the 1980s only to fall into disrepair in the financial turmoil of the 1990s; here you can take a cat-skiing adventure on the now-untouched slopes. (Since this is where ramen originates, make sure to try a bowl or two before you leave. Rakuichi Soba is one standout.)

Don’t forget, too, that you can celebrate Christmas in the uniquely Japanese way this month—with fried chicken, a legacy of an exceptionally successful marketing gimmick by KFC 50 years ago that embedded the idea in the national psyche. There’s also the White Illumination event in Sapporo Odori Park, a four-decade tradition that brings 800,000 or more twinkling lights to the city intended to evoke a Mittel European Christmas.

  • Book now: Hoshino Resorts Risonare Tomamu

The ski-in, ski-out resort is a whimsical delight. Book one of the Insta-ready Cloud Suites, with cumulus-shaped decorative touches, from cushions to mirrors, and enjoy being handily located in central Hokkaido.

Head to HND on United from SFO and ORD, or JFK on JAL. Then it’s about a 90-minute connection to CTS, the anchor airport for Hokkaido.

Row of narrow, multistory houses along a canal

Amsterdam’s canals and alleyways become a picturesque backdrop for an installation of lightworks devised by local and international artists in December.

6. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

December is great for: an illuminating stroll around the canals

The 12th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival runs from December 1 through late January: It was the canny brainchild of Felix Guttmann, an entrepreneur who built his fortune with canal sightseeing boats, and is a sister event to the likes of Vivid Sydney in Australia.

Creatives from around the world are invited to submit designs, and 20 or so will be selected for temporary installation in the city center. A few will then earn the ultimate accolade: a permanent berth in Amsterdam, like the work by Massimo Uberti and Marco Pollice, “Today I Love You,” from the fourth edition, now on the facade of a local hospital, or “178 Bottles, 1 Message” from the third edition, a piece designed by Tijdmakers (Saskia Hoogendoorn and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands) in the square in front of Amsterdam Sloterdijk.

There’s no sense yet which, if any, of this year’s entries will graduate to become a fixture of the cityscape, but expect them to be particularly outlandish. The theme for 2023 is “Loading . . . Revealing Art, AI, and Tech” so trippy AI-forms will likely be the default.

  • Book now: Hotel de l’Europe

One of Europe’s true landmark hotels, the 1890s wedding cake–like building just emerged from a three-year renovation of all private and public areas. Don’t miss the chance to have a nightcap in Freddy’s, the clubby bar named after its former owner, a scion of the Heineken brewing dynasty.

There are countless direct flights from the USA to Amsterdam. If you can splurge on business, opt for KLM to collect one of its charming genever houses offered as keepsakes for all travelers up front, or try the newly installed JetBlue service from JFK for a more affordable alternative.

Holiday lights decorate the building facades of Montepulciano, near a Christmas market and tree at night

Visitors can try some of the local wines under a sparkly canopy of lights at the Christmas Terrace, a lounge area created as part of the program.

7. Montepulciano, Italy

December is great for: wine and Wenceslas

Montepulciano is world famous thanks to the namesake grape that forms the building block of many red table wines. Most visitors come to this little Tuscan enclave in summer to sample a bottle or two at vineyards like Bindella and Fattoria Svetoni, but it’s worth a trip in winter for a very different reason: the largest Christmas market in the central region of Italy. It runs on weekends in December, then every day from December 22 through Epiphany.

The festivities are based around Piazza Grande, with stalls and stands selling souvenirs and treats, and the local fortress is transformed into Santa’s Grotto (or Babbo Natale, as the Italians call him).

  • Book now: Borgo San Vincenzo

The 21-room, year-old boutique property sits in a reimagined 18th-century village amid some of Italy’s most storied vineyards. The hotel’s sommelier offers regular guided tastings of local wines.

There are bargain-priced flights on Emirates, which runs a fifth freedom flight, as well as Italy-based budget carrier Neos Air, on the route to Milan from JFK. From there, it’s a short hop to Perugia airport, an hour’s drive away.

Field of long, purple, vertical flowers known as lupins around Lake Tekapo

Originally an invasive species native to the Americas, lupins have thrived in the local climate and are embraced as a symbol of the country.

8. Lake Tekapo & Lake Pukaki, New Zealand

December is great for: road-tripping through a carpet of blooms

From December 1, United Airlines will offer a groundbreaking new way to reach New Zealand, with direct, nonstop service from SFO to Christchurch. It’s the first time in almost 20 years that U.S. travelers can bypass transiting in the north island at Auckland, and instead arrive immediately in the wilds of the south island, the ideal base for a road trip round the rugged, CGI-like landscapes that are synonymous with the country.

It’s peak summer season this month, and the landscape of the interior hills will be carpeted in lupins, pink and purple spear-like flowers. Take a drive around the area to snap a few shots and to enjoy the adrenalin-powered hobbies that have mushroomed with lupin-like ferocity in the country, and especially the south island—think a via ferrata like Wildwire Wanaka or bungy jumping, which originated here. To maximize your time en route, consider booking with an operator like Extraordinary Journeys to help navigate the plethora of options.

  • Book now: Lakestone Lodge

Try the six-room family-run lodge right on the southern end of Lake Pukaki, with super views of Mount Cook or Aoraki, and a resource-sensitive approach to hospitality in the wilderness, relying on solar power and local ingredients both.

Take the nonstop flight if you can—the weather in New Zealand can be notoriously finicky year-round, and it’s best to minimize your puddle jumping so you don’t run into delays and reroutings.

Art Basel is not the only draw to Miami this month: Everyone’s here to score a VIP invite to a party or two (even if they won’t admit it).

9. Miami, Florida

December is great for: skipping the velvet rope

From December 8 to 10, the world’s arterati will descend once more for that OTT culturefest known as Art Basel. Unlike the OG mothership in Switzerland that’s squarely for po-faced pros, this fiesta was deliberately founded to offer an irresistibly frothy combo of work and play for even the heaviest-weight collector. There’s a chance to snap up masterpieces at the main show, which has just seen a new leader take over from longtime czar Marc Spiegler, plus satellite fairs like Untitled, NADA, or the furniturefest DesignMiami.

Last year’s high-society highlights included Prada’s DJ-powered makeover of the Faena Forum, a 30th-anniversary celebration of Madonna’s Sex book showcasing its raunchy prints that was underwritten by Yves Saint Laurent, and a VIP room that featured two full-size replicas of work by reclusive pop artist Yayoi Kusama. Buy a ticket to the fairs and sweet talk a few gallerinas into adding your name to a list or two.

Book now: Loews Hotel

Ask any gallerist where the serious collectors stay and they’ll stage-whisper it—not at one of the funky boutique hotels, but instead at the ultra-reliable deliver-your-dry-cleaning-on-time spot right next to the Convention Center, Loews.

What, you mean you’re not scooting down on a friend’s private jet? If you must use a commercial carrier, Miami’s connected to almost every major hub via an assortment of airlines.

10. Kennebunkport, Maine

December is great for: off-season adventures in New England

Don’t assume that this breezy coastal town in Maine is a summertime-only spot. (Though biking back from Goose Rocks beach for a fresh cooked lobster roll from Nunan’s every evening on a warm day here is a dreamy all-American vacation.) The surge of visits in peak season has helped drive greater interest in visiting when the weather might be a little chillier, but the crowds will have significantly thinned.

In December, there’s the added allure of the 11-day Christmas Prelude, which runs through December 10. It’s a kitschy, delightful celebration of all things festive and New England, featuring everything from candlelit caroling to a dog costume parade; Kennebunkport’s Santa swaps out a sleigh for a more venue-appropriate vehicle—he always arrives for the celebrations via lobster boat. Don’t miss the tree, either, which is constructed entirely of vintage lobster traps.

  • Book now: Hidden Pond

Many hotels here have winterized their offerings to better cater to off-season visitors, like the cabins of Hidden Pond, set in a 60-acre forest of balsam and fir. The stand-alone room decor is heavy on wood and wool, and the hotel offers activities like stargazing on crisp, clear winter nights.

For those arriving from outside New England, the best route is to fly into Boston—connected by the major airlines to countless hubs across the country—and drive 90 minutes or so up the coast.

The 10 best places to visit in December

Jordi Lippe-McGraw

In December, the world transforms. The Northern Hemisphere sees winter's touch with snow and chill, while the Southern Hemisphere basks in summer's warmth.

Travelers can choose anything from snow-capped landscapes ideal for winter sports to sunlit beaches for relaxation. As the year-end approaches, many places come alive with holiday preparations, each offering unique cultural experiences.

Whether it's the allure of festive markets , the thrill of outdoor adventures, or simply exploring new terrains, December provides something for every traveler.

But where should you go? Here are the 10 best destinations to visit in December.

Breckenridge, Colorado

adventure trips in december

Imagine a place where the winter comes alive — that's Breckenridge in December. Picture world-class ski slopes, cozy family sleigh rides and thrilling snowmobile adventures. Not to mention, the history here is captivating. December's Ullr Fest is also a special treat for travelers. The festival is a local favorite held in honor of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. (We're hoping he blesses us with plenty of powder.)

There's also plenty to explore in nearby towns like Frisco and Leadville; less than an hour away, you can take a rejuvenating dip at Indian Hot Springs. Or, weather permitting, head to Rocky Mountain National Park to marvel at its natural beauty.

If you're still in Breckenridge come January, you're in for a spectacle. During the International Snow Sculpture Championships, artists carve massive snow blocks into stunning creations.

TPG tip : Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan offers a spectacular Rocky Mountain retreat with premium skiing, winter escapades, boating, mountain biking and year-round family-friendly outdoor activities. It's available for about $205 in December, or 21,000 World of Hyatt Points per night.

From peaceful snowshoe treks to exciting family sledding spots, there's something for everyone here. For skiing enthusiasts, some of the region's best slopes await. Beyond winter sports, the stunning beauty of nearby Lake Tahoe is a must-see.

After a day in the snow, explore downtown Truckee. It offers museums full of rich local history, and its numerous breweries and eateries provide a taste of the town's culture. You can even opt for a guided tour of the town.

During the holidays, Zurich becomes a festive paradise. Streets shimmer with lights, and Christmas markets spring to life. Highlights include Burkliplatz's candle dipping, the enchanting "Marlitram" fairy tale tram and the singing choirs at Werdmuhleplatz, accompanied by its famed "Singing Christmas Tree."

Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Station, one of Europe's largest indoor Christmas markets, boasts a radiant tree adorned with Swarovski crystals. The nostalgic Dorfli market in Old Town offers a vintage charm with fondue and artisanal goods.

For a warm treat, stop by Cafe Felix and choose from a medley of hot chocolate iterations. Or, savor history at the luxury confectioner Sprungli, which has been in operation since 1836. For elevated dining, Restaurant Felsenegg provides fondue with a stunning city view.

Beyond these, visitors can skate, toboggan or take a scenic fondue eTukTuk ride. Zurich's thermal baths and saunas overlooking Lake Zurich promise relaxation. For artsy souls, the "Herzebaracke" floating theater offers diverse performances by the lake from Nov. 1, 2023, to March 10, 2024.

TPG tip : Stay near the heart of town at Crowne Plaza Zurich for around $146 or 30,000 IHG rewards points per night.

In December, Japan lights up in celebration, offering visitors a magical experience. From Tokyo's Omotesando Illuminations, aglow with around 900,000 lights, to Ashikaga Flower Park's radiant 5-million-light display, the country is a spectacle. Mie Prefecture's Nabana no Sato Winter Illumination lets guests immerse themselves in LED light fields and explore captivating light tunnels.

Meanwhile, Kobe's touching Luminarie shines in remembrance of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake victims. December also welcomes ski enthusiasts as Japan's winter sports season begins.

From the breathtaking views at Shiga Kogen Ski Area in Nagano — with its Olympic-endorsed slopes — to the sought-after resorts in Niigata — easily accessible from Tokyo — skiing here is a dream. But there's more to Niigata than just skiing: Indulge in its renowned hot springs and savor its exquisite seafood, rice and sake.

TPG tip : Book a room at the Conrad Tokyo for $389 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Dubai in December is a whole different vibe. The scorching heat takes a backseat, making way for cooler days. This means beach picnics, outdoor adventures and late-night strolls become even more inviting. And then there's the festive buzz. Everywhere you look, from the towering skyscrapers to the cozy lanes, Dubai sparkles with holiday decorations.

It's not just about twinkling lights, though. The city pulses with events — think bustling markets, lively performances and the aroma of seasonal treats filling the air. So, if you're dreaming of a mix of relaxation, retail therapy and rich culture, Dubai is your go-to.

The Bahamas

adventure trips in december

Traveling to the Bahamas becomes a breeze this December, thanks to several new flight routes. Delta Air Lines is launching a direct flight from New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Nassau. For travelers on the West Coast, there's good news, too: American Airlines is rolling out direct flights from Los Angeles and Seattle to Nassau.

Not to be left out, JetBlue is introducing a weekly nonstop service from LA. Once you touch down, the Bahamas offers a plethora of experiences. Dive into the clear waters, explore the world's third-largest coral reef or swim with the wild pigs.

And if you're into sailing, December is the prime time to visit. Events like The National Family Island Regatta showcase the region's rich maritime heritage.

TPG tip : Book a room at the French Leave Resort for $749 or 80,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. Or, for sheer indulgence, opt for the luxurious Rosewood Baha Mar , where rates start from $715 per night.

Morristown, Arizona

Just a quick 50-minute drive from Phoenix, Morristown is the perfect desert escape in December. The weather's a treat with comfy temperatures in the 60s and 70s — a lovely switch from Arizona's intense summer and the cold weather of other destinations.

If you love the outdoors, you'll be in your element. Morristown's desert beauty is a big draw, with opportunities to go hiking or 4x4 riding.

At night, the town's clear December skies, away from bright city glows, offer some top-notch stargazing. Witness the breathtaking Geminids and Ursids Meteor Showers, peaking on Dec. 14-15 and 22-23, respectively. And there's more to the celestial show: Mark your calendar for the New Moon on Dec. 13, the Winter Solstice on Dec. 22, and the Full Moon on Dec. 27.

Platinum cardholders receive 12 p.m. check-in (when available), room upgrade at check-in (when available), daily breakfast for two, $100 property credit to be used during the stay, complimentary Wi-Fi and 4 p.m. checkout guaranteed.

New York City

adventure trips in december

New York City in December is an enchanting experience. Imagine skating below the gleaming Rockefeller Center tree, surrounded by the city's sparkling skyline. Fifth Avenue transforms into a festive paradise, with its department stores showcasing captivating holiday window displays.

Brooklyn's Dyker Heights is a must-visit for those who admire festive lights. The neighborhood's homes are grandly decorated for the holidays, and dedicated bus tours guide visitors through the most brilliantly lit blocks.

But the magic doesn't stop there. You can also catch a classic holiday show at Radio City Music Hall, wander through the winter markets at Bryant Park or Central Park, and marvel at the giant holiday ornaments scattered throughout the city.

TPG tip : Book a stay at the Park South Hotel for $480 or 23,000 Hyatt World points, or check out TPG's favorite hotels in New York City .

adventure trips in december

December is the perfect month to explore Uganda. The landscapes are at their greenest, yet the weather stays dry. This combination is ideal for gorilla tracking, an experience you won't forget. Boat safaris also shine in December. As water sources become a focal point in the dry terrain, spotting the Big Five becomes even more thrilling.

While Uganda is gaining attention, it's still a quieter East African destination. Venture beyond the natural wonders, too. The capital, Kampala, is a city full of surprises. From the lively Equator Bar in the Sheraton to the unique crocodile tail delicacy at The Lawns, there's much to savor. And if you're into art, the Afriart Gallery showcases contemporary pieces.

TPG tip : Book a stay at Hilton Garden Inn Kampala for $170 or 37,000 Hilton Honors points.

25 Best Islands to Visit in December

' data-srcset=

Sharing is caring!

Many people consider summer to be the best time of year to travel. I completely disagree. I absolutely love travelling in the off-season and autumn and winter are slowly becoming my favourites. One thing I love about winter travel is how varied it is. You can be shoeshowing through a forest one moment, take a flight and be lounging on a Caribbean island the following day! Speaking of which, if you’re wondering what the best islands to visit in December are, you’ve come to the right place!

the best islands to visit in December - Malta

Islands escapes often conjure up images of sun-soaked paradises and colourful cocktails. And while this is mainly the case, I’ve also decided to throw in a few non-tropical islands into this list. If you’re considering heading to an island in December, don’t set your sights on the Caribbean just yet!

The Best Islands to Visit in December

For the perfect mix of sun, sea, and snow (trust me!), I’ve rounded up 19 of the best islands to visit in December. Without further ado, these are my top pics.

Average Temperature : 17°C (62°F)

Let’s start off with an island that isn’t tropical at all. But is still one of the best island escapes to have over the winter months. Malta is a hidden gem in Europe. It represents everything good about winter sun while remaining a somewhat off-the-beaten-path experience. Especially in December.

malta is one of the best islands to visit in December

You likely won’t be able to catch a tan in Malta in winter. But, you will be able to explore the island without the summer crowds, go hiking, see some fantastic history, and some stunning natural beauty.

The island is super easy to get around with public transport. Buses can take you to most areas of the island and, while some can be unreliable (mainly the ones coming from the airport – we learned this the hard way), the majority are reliable, efficient, and affordable. However, if buses aren’t your style, it’s fairly simple to hire a car . If you’re from the UK, you’ll also be pleased to know that they drive on the left side of the road which makes getting around very easy.

beautiful buildings in Malta

While on the island, a few must-sees including the old town of Rabat with its winding cobbled lanes, the historic Mdina, walk the heritage walking trail, and visit the historic temples. I also highly recommend you take a ferry to Gozo, where you’ll find more fantastic temples, beautiful gardens, and a towering citadel with great views.

Malta is also pretty good for New Year’s Eve with a great party in Valletta and fireworks.

2. Phuket, Thailand

Average Temperature : 30°C (86°F)

If you’re dreaming of a tropical island escape during the winter months, you can’t go wrong with Phuket, in Thailand. Located south of the country, you can get here via a 1-and-a-half-hour flight from Bangkok . However, some airlines will also fly here directly. I flew into Phuket International Airport, and from there, a short ride took me to my hotel

Phuket in Thailand

It’s a fairly touristy destination , but this all depends on where you stay. The island is big enough to offer a bit of everything.

You’ll find pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, great for swimming and paddling. Explore the bustling markets in Old Phuket Town, where you’ll find a mix of cultural treasures and quirky street art, and for outdoor lovers, activities like snorkelling in the Similan Islands or hiking to the Big Buddha are a must.

Then, don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine; the street food here is incredible and so cheap! You can find delicious pad Thai noodles made in front of you for about £1!

Top Tip: Choose your accommodation wisely to avoid the hustle and bustle if that’s not your thing. Patong Beach is lively with its vibrant nightlife, perfect for party animals, while Kata Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere.

3. Tenerife, Spain

Average Temperature : 21°C (69°F)

For a dose of volcanic beauty and outdoor adventure, heading to Tenerife in December is always a good idea. The Spanish island is an absolute gem. But, in winter, when the summer crowds have left and the prices have dropped, it’s the perfect escape!

Located in the Canary Islands, just off the northwest coast of Africa, Tenerife boasts the ‘eternal Spring,’ with a warm climate year-round, making it one of the best islands to visit in December.

The island is a paradise for nature lovers with lush green landscapes, towering volcanic peaks, and beautiful beaches. You can explore the unique landscapes of Teide National Park , relax on the golden shores of Playa de las Américas, or take a scenic drive through the Anaga Rural Park.

Tenerife is one of the best islands to visit in December

When flying in, most international visitors land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), conveniently connected to major cities worldwide. From there, getting to your destination is a breeze with taxis and buses readily available. You can also get to Tenerife by ferry from some of the other Canary Islands.

With average temperatures around 18°C in December, Tenerife offers the perfect blend of warmth and adventure during the winter months.

Average Temperature : 18°C (64°F)

This is another of the islands in Europe that I consider a bit of a hidden gem . Before my trip to Cyrus, so many people told me that there was nothing to do there except lounge on the beaches and catch a sun tan. But, they could not have been more wrong.

Cyprus is the perfect blend of history, culture, and mild Mediterranean weather. Situated in the eastern Mediterranean, it boasts a rich history and modern charm. December might not be peak beach weather, but with temperatures hovering around 17°C, it’s ideal for exploring without breaking a sweat.

beautiful views over Cyprus

Wander through the cobbled streets of charming villages like Omodos or immerse yourself in the fascinating history at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos . There’s also the wonderful ancient Kourion amphitheatre with its stunning views, the tiny Kolossi Castle, and the gorgeous Aphrodite beach where the goddess was reportedly once spotted.

If you’re here for the festive season, the atmosphere in Cyprus during December is electric. The locals really know how to celebrate the holiday season with delicious food, warm hospitality, and a fantastic fireworks display during New Year’s Eve.

5. Gran Canaria, Spain

Another fantastic option in the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s best islands to visit in December. This vibrant island is ideal for those seeking winter warmth.

In December; Gran Canaria’s average temperature is around 21°C, making it an ideal winter destination. It can get a little cooler at night though, so you may want to pack a light jacket. Even so, it’s a great temperature for both beach strolls and mountain hikes .

stunning views in Gran Canaria, Spain

Like with Tenerife, there’s lots to do here. Explore the golden sands of Playa del Inglés, visit the dramatic dunes of Maspalomas, or wander through the historic Vegueta district in Las Palmas. The Christmas markets are also well worth a visit, where the island’s unique blend of Spanish and African influences comes through.

Top Tip: If you don’t plan on visiting for Christmas, you’ll find that prices are much cheaper. This is one of the most expensive destinations to fly to for the festive season in Europe because so many people want to escape for some winter sun. The start of December is much more affordable.

6. New York City, USA

Average Temperature : 5°C (41°F)

New York? An island? Well, yes, in fact, it is! The island of Manhatten might not be your traditional island escape but I can’t think of a better city to visit during December (except, perhaps, London ).

Picture the iconic skyline decorated with festive Christmas lights, the city streets dusted with snow, and the famous ice rinks popping up all over the city. New York comes alive in December and it’s definitely one of the best times to visit.

New York at Christmas

It’s definitely not warm, with temperatures hovering around 4°C, but if you fancy a festive escape, you can’t go wrong. A few of the must-sees in New York in winter include ice skating at Rockefeller Center, exploring the festive window displays along Fifth Avenue, and watching a Broadway Show at the Radio City Music Hall.

Top Tip: Don’t miss the dazzling displays at Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for a Christmas lights hidden gem.

7. Saint Lucia

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

If you fancy a trip to what is arguably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands to visit in December, you can’t go wrong with Saint Lucia. With lush landscapes, turquoise waters, and a tropical escape, this Caribbean gem, located in the eastern part of the region, is a slice of paradise that promises an unforgettable winter getaway.

It’s fairly easy to reach with a flight to the Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). From the UK, a few airlines fly direct including TUI and British Airways, but most will include a stopover in the States. I’d recommend staying in the charming town of Soufrière for its blend of local culture and stunning views of the iconic Pitons.

St Lucia is one of the best islands to visit in December

December in Saint Lucia means temperatures hovering around 27°C, creating the perfect climate for exploring. Dive into the vibrant marine life with a snorkeling adventure in Anse Chastanet or embark on a scenic hike up Gros Piton for breathtaking panoramas. Don’t miss the Friday Night Street Party in Gros Islet for an authentic taste of local music, food, and dance.

8. Puerto Rico

Average Temperature : 19°C (66°F)

Tucked away in the heart of the Caribbean, this island paradise is the perfect blend of Spanish influence, tropical beauty, and warm hospitality. From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), a quick ride gets you to the heart of San Juan, where the charm of Old San Juan awaits with its colourful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets.

Puerto Rico

December is one of the best times to visit Puerto Rico, with temperatures hovering around 26°C. This is ideal for both exploring the historic forts and relaxing on the beautiful beaches.

You can explore the local culinary scene with a mofongo feast (a Puerto Rican comfort food made from mashed plantains), and don’t miss the bioluminescent bay in Vieques for a magical nighttime kayak adventure.

Also, I recommend you venture beyond the tourist hotspots to places like Culebra or El Yunque National Forest for a taste of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.

Average Temperature : 2°C (35°F)

Our first trip to Iceland was in December, and it still remains one of the best places I’ve ever visited. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean and frequently referred to as “the land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is one of the best places to visit if you love outdoor adventure and natural beauty.

Iceland waterfalls in December

The landscapes are stunning.

Surprisingly, you may not get snow in Iceland in December. The country typically sees the most snowfall in January and February . But, you can still expect icy temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rain. Like the UK , Iceland can be pretty rainy!

It doesn’t really sound like I’m selling it, but if you’re looking for one of the best islands to visit in December, Iceland should be high on your bucket list. Some of the country’s top sights include the Golden Circle , the black beaches on the south coast, the famous Blue Lagoon , and the countless breathtaking waterfalls. You can even dive between the tectonic plates if you wish!

Church, Reykjavik, Iceland

I also highly recommend visiting Reykjavik town centre. The city has great nightlife, lots of fantastic restaurants, some of the quirkiest museums in the world (Penis Museum, anyone?), and wonderful architecture.

Top Tip: For a more secluded hot spring experience, venture beyond the popular spots and discover the lesser-known hot springs like Reykjadalur.

Average Temperature : 7°C (44°F)

I will never stop telling people how great the UK is to travel to . December is one of the coldest months of the year to travel to the UK, but it’s also easily one of the best. With festive markets up and down the country, a whole host of activities, Christmas light trails , and decorations in all the towns and cities, and one of the best New Year’s Eve Fireworks displays in the world, it’s no wonder so many people flock to the UK in winter. Especially London .

London at Christmas

Most international visitors land at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW). From there, it’s only a short train ride to the centre of London and from there, you can get a train to pretty much anywhere . Trains run to the south, midlands, and even as far as Scotland in the north.

Nonetheless, most people stay in London for the festivities. And, to be honest, I don’t blame them! Here, you can witness the dazzling lights along Oxford Street, explore the magical Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, or catch a classic Christmas play in the West End. There are also so many fantastic Christmas decorations in London , from Covent Garden to the South Bank.

The streets of Edinburgh in December

If you’d prefer to head to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is just as festive . Stroll along the Royal Mile, where the Christmas market comes alive with festive treats and handmade crafts and visit the famous Christmas market with its German stalls and Ferris Wheel.

Top Tip : Don’t miss the quaint Christmas markets in smaller cities like Bath or York . Areas like the Cotswolds and Cambridge are also worth visiting in winter.

11. Bali, Indonesia

Average Temperature : 3°C (37°F)

A captivating tropical paradise in Indonesia, Bali is an unforgettable escape. Nestled in Southeast Asia, it’s one of the best islands to visit in December. You can expect pretty good temperatures in Bali in December, with weather hovering around 30°C (86°F).

You’ll also find lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and a delightful cultural heritage with historic ruins and temples. Explore the vibrant local markets, and savor the flavors of mouthwatering Indonesian cuisine. Like Thailand, food is pretty affordable here, so you’ll find it a pretty cheap winter travel destination.

Beaches in Bali

On the cultural side, you can embark on a cultural journey to ancient temples like Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. Immerse yourself in the mesmerising rhythm of traditional Balinese dance performances. And, for nature enthusiasts, don’t miss the breathtaking rice terraces in Ubud or the underwater wonders of Amed’s crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re dreaming of a laid-back Christmas in luxurious resorts or seeking adventure riding the famous waves at Uluwatu Beach, Bali has a range of experiences. It’s a destination where the holiday season unfolds in diverse ways, perfect for embracing the local customs and traditions along the way.

Creating our annual Travel Awards package takes months of work by a large team. This time out, our travel editors unanimously decided to celebrate trips in the United States, because the pandemic reinforced what we’ve long known: there is a bounty of spectacular American destinations to share.

Next we tapped our vast network of expert travel writers, many of whom have been working with Outside for 20-plus years. Our writers are constantly out there chasing adventure and collecting information on exciting lodging, trails, rivers, beaches, road trips, and other things to do. What they came back with was impressive—the research memo for this package was 117 pages long.

Then the really hard part began: whittling down an overwhelming number of choices into one winner and one runner-up in each category. This is when the heated debates arose, as we pored over research and advocated for favorites. The final decisions were based on many factors, including new travel options, improved-upon classics, accessibility, and sustainability, and we always strive to offer a variety of geographic locales, activities, and price points.

Our overriding goal? To inspire readers to get outside and explore the world, and provide them with great ideas for years to come. —Mary Turner, deputy editor and travel director

Loggerhead Key beach and lighthouse

Beach Winner: Loggerhead Key, Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

Dry Tortugas is one of the most remote parks in the national park system, located approximately 70 miles beyond Key West. It’s also one of the smallest. Depending on the tide, only 143 acres of sand, coral rubble, and rock make up the archipelago’s seven islands. But those islands are blessed with great beaches, including South Beach on Garden Key, home to the park’s main tourist facilities. The best, however, is on the northwest side of Loggerhead Key, accessible only via private boat or by undertaking a three-mile paddle from Garden Key. The islet is encircled by gorgeous white sand, and just offshore is a stunning coral formation called Little Africa, because it looks like a map of the continent from above. That’s one of the best places to snorkel. Paddling between the islands can be challenging, though shoals break up larger waves. For tourists coming from Key West, the Yankee Freedom catamaran offers day trips to Garden Key at 7:30 A.M. and returns at roughly 5:15 P.M. (Round-trip tickets start at $200 and include a snack, box lunch, and snorkeling equipment.) Plan to bring your own safety gear and kayak—and be sure to reserve a spot for it on the catamaran in advance—or rent what you require in Key West. You’ll also need to stop at the Garden Key dock house to pick up a free boating permit. There’s first-come, first-served camping on Garden Key ($15 per night). Come prepared to be entirely self-sufficient. —Ryan Krogh

Runner-Up: York Beach Surf Club, York, Maine

This historic cottage colony has been reimagined as a hip year-round hotel that pays homage to the 1960s surf club started by local legend L. F. “Sonny” Perkins. He and his son updated the oceanfront property starting in 2020 with Scandi-style bungalows, a restaurant serving lobster breakfast sammies, and a collection of vintage surf photos. Summer camps and lessons are held on the gentle waves and sandy shores of York Beach. Experienced surfers pack five-millimeter wetsuits and come for the area’s storied winter swell. From $350 —Jen Murphy

A dome at Oculis Lodge

Lodging Winner: Oculis Lodge, Glacier, Washington

Travelers will soon have a new way to admire the Cascade Range’s pines and peaks: the Oculis Lodge , 12 igloo-shaped domes tentatively scheduled to open before summer. The project set a record as Indiegogo’s most funded lodging campaign to date, with over $1.2 million raised. The domes, designed with a bedroom, kitchen, and sunken living room, are next-level glamping. Each sleeps up to six guests and features a private jacuzzi, sauna, and heated deck for yoga or other exercise. What’s more, all have a 15-foot-wide skylight and an en suite telescope, to give the glittery cosmos a starring role. Sustainability is a staple here; the domes consist of reclaimed and recycled materials, and they require up to 50 percent less energy to heat and cool than conventional cabin structures. With their minimal profile, the structures blend into the surrounding forest. The seven-acre property is located within 30 minutes of Mount Baker Ski Area and Mount Baker Scenic Byway, and two hours from North Cascades National Park—one of the lower 48’s least visited. But travelers staying at Oculis don’t have to go far for adventure; hiking, mountain biking, and paddling trails abound in the area. From $300 —Stephanie Vermillion

Surfing off Oahu; Sunset Bar at Turtle Bay Resort

Runner-Up: Turtle Bay Resort, Oahu

Few adventure resorts can compare to Turtle Bay, a 1,300-acre North Shore property set on land previously owned by the Hawaiian royal family. To celebrate its 50th anniversary last year, it underwent a $250 million renovation and now offers a paniolo luau dinner series, an on-site farm that supplies its restaurants and spa treatments, a surf school led by native Banzai Pipeline champ Jamie O’Brien, 12 miles of biking and hiking trails, five miles of beaches, four swimming pools, a free daily fitness class, cruiser bikes, and sunset horseback rides through the banyan trees. When you finally find yourself indoors, you’ll have a room with a view of the sea. From $680 —Tasha Zemke

Paddling Devils River

River Winner: Devils River, Texas

The rough-and-tumble landscape of southwest Texas doesn’t seem like the most fitting location for one of America’s best float trips. Yet here it is, the Devils’ pristine spring water flowing through a magical limestone canyon that’s home to black bears and mountain lions, cactus and yucca. Paddlers embarking on the 47-mile float from Baker’s Crossing to Amistad Reservoir are rewarded with the finest of the state’s overlooked outdoors: fly-fishing for native Guadalupe bass, swimming holes so clear they may as well be rock bathtubs, and nonstop Chihuahuan Desert scenery. The river alternates between long, deep pools; stretches of flat, braided water; and Class II–III rapids. Not long ago this trip, which takes most paddlers four days, was nearly unmanageable because of private land rights along the shore that made overnighting difficult. But the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which regulates access via a permitting system, opened a series of campsites to make the multiday adventure possible. A handful of outfitters offer shuttles, canoe rentals, and fully guided trips, including Amistad Expeditions , based in nearby Del Rio. In 2019, Devils River State Natural Area was designated the first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in Texas, and camping beneath oak and wild pecan trees with the Milky Way in view is transcendent. —R.K.

Rafters and paddlers can run Class II–III rapids in one section and Class IV in another. The restoration is expected to foster biodiversity and provide an economic boost to Great Falls, a town struggling from the loss of a once booming textile industry. —S.V

Camping with a view of the Sierra in Owens Valley

Road Trip Winner: Highway 395, Eastern Sierra, California

While U.S. 395 goes through four states between the Mojave Desert and the Canadian border, it’s the roughly 200 miles that pass by the granite giants of California’s eastern Sierra that warrant top billing. Start in the town of Inyokern and point your wheels north toward Fossil Falls, where you can hike above a volcanic canyon carved by glacial melt. Forty-six miles away, in Lone Pine, the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center’s parking lot boasts epic views of 14,494-foot Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. Get cultured at the nearby Museum of Western Film History, packed with memorabilia from some of the hundreds of movies shot in the area. Afterward, meander (or rack up to climb in) the arch-studded Alabama Hills, mesmerizing at sunset when alpenglow drapes the bulbous formations. Refuel in Bishop at Great Basin Bakery, then venture north to view the burbling wonders of Hot Creek Geologic Site, which should inspire a soak at nearby Hilltop or Wild Willy’s hot springs. Pull yourself away and head to Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve to admire the whimsical shoreline spires, then sit down to brews and bites at Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining, quite possibly the best restaurant located inside a gas station in North America. Lone Pine, Bishop, and the Oh Ridge Campground at June Lake are good places to overnight, making this a perfect two- or three-day trip. —Shawnté Salabert

Shaped by the Colorado River over millions of years, the landscape’s dramatic canyons, monoliths, and mesas form a 150,580-square-mile expanse of high desert straddling the region’s Four Corners and include the spectacular spires of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park and the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park . Now is the time to appreciate such magnificence: the river is one of the country’s most hotly contested water resources, and it’s threatened by drought. New weeklong, Navajo-led trips from the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s Field Institute provide the ultimate deep dive into the greater national-park area and its Indigenous connections (from $2,800). To explore on your own, base out of Grand Junction; this western Colorado adventure hub is a 30-minute drive from Colorado National Monument and surrounded by top-notch hiking and mountain-biking trails, campsites, and wineries. Chatwal Lodge

Mountain Winner: Catskill Mountains, New York

The Catskills and their namesake park—comprising about 700,000 acres of forested peaks, narrow valleys, and countless streams just 100 miles from Manhattan—are steeped in history. They’re also undergoing a renaissance, thanks to a handful of new lodges, hotels, and restaurants. Those catching our eye include the 11-room Chatwal Lodge, a log-cabin-inspired chalet overlooking the 833-acre Toronto Reservoir, and the Eastwind Oliverea Valley, with 27 cabins and rooms, A-frame saunas that nail the Scandinavian hygge vibe, and a restaurant called Dandelion that uses seasonal vegetables in its cuisine. The DeBruce, a onetime hunting lodge that’s been transformed into a 12-room inn, has a dining room with tasting menus sourced from the 600-acre property; think venison in a wild-berry reduction. The husband-and-wife duo behind the inn were semifinalists this year for a James Beard Award. As for recreational opportunities in the Catskills, not much has changed since the Gilded Age, which is a good thing. There are thousands of miles of well-maintained hiking trails, excellent mountain-biking opportunities (check out 60 miles of lift-accessed tracks at Plattekill Mountain), and dozens of lakes and ponds to explore with a paddle in hand. The Catskills are also the birthplace of American dry-fly fishing. —R.K.

Riding in Hobbs State Park on Arkansas’s Monument Trails

Biking Winner: Monument Trails, Arkansas

Arkansas has pumped a lot of energy and money into its mountain-biking trails. As a result, the state transformed into a world-class destination almost overnight. One of its most robust initiatives is a public-private partnership that created Monument Trails , an array of singletrack in Arkansas’s state parks. Many routes were designed and built by Rogue Trails, a firm based in the town of Rogers made up of former racers who take land management and sustainability seriously. The first were unveiled in 2019, another 17 were introduced in the past year and a half, and today some 75 miles span Hobbs, Mount Nebo, Pinnacle Mountain, and Devil’s Den State Parks. The shared-use trails traverse iconic landscapes, including the Ozark Mountains, pristine hardwood forests on rugged plateaus, and limestone domes, and you’ll find yourself wheeling across flowy cross-country terrain and bombing technical downhills. Bentonville, with its dynamic craft breweries, and Eureka Springs, boasting a vibrant art scene, are top choices for places to stay while you play. Funding for the expanding trail system is supported by the Arkansas Parks and Recreation Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to developing local outdoor offerings, with patronage from the Walton Family Foundation. This year marks the centennial for Arkansas State Parks, so go celebrate. —R.K.

Think Mordor, but transported to Alaska. Set in the middle of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve , an area that welcomed fewer than 9,500 visitors last year, these 7,000-foot granite peaks are so remote that most trekkers opt for a guided tour in July or August, when the weather is best and wildlife abounds. Getaway House cabin

Cabins Winner: Getaway House

Jon Staff was a burned-out East Coaster when he and a partner at Harvard Business School came up with a plan that focused on doing what he needed most: getting into nature to reset his mood, with zero distractions. Getaway House was born from that impetus. What started as one small house in a New Hampshire forest has grown into more than 780 tiny homes, set in clusters called outposts, in at least 15 states, all of them within a couple of hours of a major city. The idea behind each stay is for guests to fully disconnect from day-to-day life so they can reconnect in a healthier way upon reentry. Each white pine home is no bigger than 200 square feet and designed with a small kitchen, a large window for taking in the trees, and a lockbox for your phone. TV? Wi-Fi? Don’t ask. Instead, you’ll find an outdoor fire pit, a mini library, and a landline for emergencies. More than two dozen popular outposts now dot the country. One of the newest, near Asheboro, North Carolina, has trails and fishing, and sits within day-tripping distance of Birkhead Mountain Wilderness; there’s also a 12-mile round-trip hike up 938-foot Coolers Knob Mountain in the Uwharries. The view from Burntside Lodge

In January, the Department of the Interior announced withdrawal of more than 225,000 acres of public land from federal mine-leasing programs near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The 20-year hiatus allows campers to finally relax and reserve one of the 248 coveted permits allowed per day to enjoy paddling season, which starts May 1 and ends September 30. Not everyone who wants to explore the pristine north woods must sleep in a tent. Burntside Lodge on Burntside Lake—one of dozens of Boundary Waters entry points—has been owned by the LaMontagne family for more than 80 years. Its third-generation head chef, Nicole LaMontagne, serves up walleye as fresh and flaky as you could catch and fry yourself. With kayaks, canoes, and SUPs for rent, guests can paddle across the water to the Crab Lake Portage, then hike a mile overland for a taste of the wilderness. But most are happy to stay put. The floors slope a bit, but with a cozy bed, a hot shower, a fireplace, and sunset views, who cares? —Stephanie Pearson

If you’d prefer to be guided, go with the Keweenaw Adventure Company . —T.N.

St. Croix positioning system

Island Winner: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which offer five National Park Service sites and require no passport for American citizens. Sitting 40 miles south of the more popular Caribbean counterparts St. Thomas and St. John, St. Croix is often overlooked by island-hopping visitors. It’s newly in the spotlight, however, after Congress designated the entire island a national heritage area in December. This step helps protect its mix of history and culture. A stroll through the colonial structures of Christiansted National Historic Site transports you back to Alexander Hamilton’s day, when the downtown district was a Danish port. Wander the shores of Salt River Bay, a somber reminder of the centuries when migrants, colonizers, and enslaved people passed through the territory. The island is also covered with trails that deliver incredible sea views, and snorkelers of any skill level will relish a day trip to Buck Island to marvel at massive reef systems where elkhorn coral may reach 30 feet high. For accommodations, consider the recently renovated King Christian Hotel, right on the waterfront. From $229 —Theresa McKinney

This sliver of land has just 1,800 residents, the restaurants tend toward the bar-and-grill variety, and most vacation rentals are on stilts to protect against hurricanes—all of which contributes to its relaxed charm. —R.K.

Taos Ski Valley

Ski Winner: Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico

Operating a ski resort is an inherently resource-intensive business. Taos Ski Valley , however, has long taken a more conscientious approach, proving itself a maverick in the industry by committing to clean-energy initiatives. Taos was the first major ski resort to become a certified B Corp, which means that its operations meet the highest social and environmental standards. Late last year, it became carbon-neutral certified after reducing its footprint. It now uses renewable energy to power snowcats, snowmaking machines, and chairlifts; it has undergone green-building upgrades; and it invests in offset projects like reforestation and biofuels. Aside from its reputation for driving change, the main reason skiers flock to this resort in northern New Mexico is for the uncrowded, low-key vibe. That and the quick hike to steep chutes off the West Basin, bird’s-eye views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from atop 12,481-foot Kachina Peak, and the green-chile-stuffed breakfast burritos from Bumps Market in the village. Stay at the 80-room Blake Hotel (from $300) and you’re steps from Lift 1. (The historic Hotel St. Bernard, another favorite, is undergoing a renovation and is slated to reopen in 2025.) Start this off with Al’s Run for a leg-crushing warm-up, and at day’s end join those in the know for beer and soft pretzels on the deck of the Bavarian at the bottom of Lift 4. —M.M.

There’s no fancy slopeside hotel, but that’s partly why Bluebird’s so awesome: it’s an affordable escape from crowded resorts. —M.M.

Badlands, South Dakota

The Wildest Place Winner: Black Hills and Badlands, South Dakota

The nation’s 17th largest state has a population of just under one million, about a fifth of whom live in Sioux Falls. The entire western third of the state is prairie grasslands, dense pine forests, geologically fascinating rock formations, and national parks filled with sacred caves and fossilized creatures from another era. See it all along the 111-mile Centennial Trail. Accessible to hikers, horseback riders, and, in some places, mountain bikers, the trail traverses state parks, federal wilderness, national forests, and a national park. It begins eight miles northeast of Sturgis in Bear Butte State Park, named for a plug of black igneous rock sacred to both the Lakota and Cheyenne. It then climbs into the wild geology of the Black Hills, home to pronghorn, bighorn sheep, elk, and turkey, winding around seven trout-filled lakes, crossing streams, and eventually topping out at 7,242-foot Black Elk Peak, before ending in Wind Cave National Park . Camping options vary from primitive tent sites to full campgrounds. Two-thirds in, the trail passes within a mile of Mount Rushmore, where hikers can peel off and sleep in a comfortable glamping tent at Under Canvas Mount Rushmore. Hit the trails at Los Padres National Forest or Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Don't forget to visit the beach in the latter, too, to snap pics of the stunning Keyhole Arch at sunset.

Nina Zietman 22nd Oct 2022 6 min read

‘Tis the season to be jolly – and also to get far away from the Christmas madness at home. After all, who needs to referee your drunk relatives going at it during over-exuberant board games when you could be trekking in South India’s misty highlands or exploring Egypt’s River Nile by private felucca boat?

And it’s not just about avoiding Christmas itself. Take yourself off to experience unusual New Year fiestas in Costa Rica , Colombia and beyond. So, we’re agreed then? Let’s swerve the seasonal drama this year and set our sights on these solo travel destinations for December instead.

Card image

Average temperature: 28°C / 82°F

Why you should visit now:.

India ’s green and serene southern state is a reliable antidote to Christmas fever. Instead of elbowing through crowds making painful purchases for random relatives, you can trek through the Unesco-listed Western Ghats – a mountain chain that’s older than the ancient Himalayas – or kayak on Kerala’s shimmering backwaters. Don’t miss the Kochi Carnival that spans the last two weeks of December, complete with bike races, beach football, art murals and parades.

Expert tip:

Malayalam is the official language in Kerala, but many people speak Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. You can’t go wrong with saying nanni (thank you) in Malayalam, though.

Card image

Average temperature: 19°C / 66°F

The start of winter brings with it a dip in humidity in Egypt . It’s still largely warm and dry in this North African nation, but the cooler days provide a great backdrop for wandering around the country’s tombs and temples. Hop between them on a traditional private felucca boat, arguably the best way to travel down the Nile. Spot freshwater crocodiles and tuck into a classic Nubian feast on board of spicy lentil stews, grilled lamb skewers and crusty shamsi bread.

Christmas is celebrated twice in Egypt: on 25 December and also on 7 January by Coptic Christians.

Average temperature: 24°C / 75°F

Sri Lanka’s southwest coast comes into its own in December, as monsoon season fades, revealing bright, sunny beach days. Climb aboard a private boat tour to spot spinner dolphins, sperm whales and, if luck’s on your side, the elusive blue whale out at sea. Deep inland, ‘tea country’ is set to put on a dazzling display, with the mist-wrapped highlands awash in lush greenery, thanks to the recent rainfall. Learn about the art of growing and harvesting tea, before sampling a steaming brew.

In the cultural capital of Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which supposedly houses the Buddha’s tooth. Buy a bunch of frangipani and lotus flowers to leave at the gold-roofed shrine.

Card image

Average temperature: -6°C / 21°F

Well if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em… For a Christmas that feels truly festive, dash to Lapland in Finland’s Arctic Circle . A world away from bauble-clad shopping malls, Yuletide here is the real deal. Expect husky rides through a wintery wonderland, cosy fireside lunches in a Lappish kota (hut) and snowshoe treks through forests straight out of Narnia. The long nights of the Arctic winter also offer the best chance of spotting the Northern Lights.

Stay in the igloo-like Aurora Domes by Lake Torassieppi for the ultimate night’s sleep.

Card image

Average temperature: 14°C / 57°F

To really escape Christmas, head to Morocco where there won’t be a whiff of Yuletide cheer in sight. Instead, you’ll find fewer crowds and comfortably warm temperatures for exploring Marrakech’s markets, the rugged Atlas Mountains and the surf-pummelled beaches of Taghazout. For a real off-the-beaten-track adventure, head to the Sahara, where sandstone kasbahs sit alongside palm groves rich in Medjool dates. Top it off with a night under the stars in a desert camp.

The town of Taliouine – home of saffron – is the best place to sample chicken tagine, infused with the expensive spice.

Card image

Average temperature: 23°C / 75°F

In December, the rain-sodden days in Costa Rica ease, but the jungles and national parks are still brilliantly lush and green. You’re best of aiming for the western side of the Talamanca Mountains and the Pacific coast and avoiding the Caribbean side (including Arenal), which is in rainy season this month. In the west, it’ll be crowded around Christmas, especially with North American travelers flocking south, but the weeks before present a quieter time for hiking, ziplining and abseiling through the canopy. Make sure you visit Palo Verde National Park in Guanacaste, at the gateway to the Nicoya Peninsula, to take in rivers and mangroves, roamed by crocodiles, howler monkeys and iguanas.

Head to nearby Chira Island for New Year’s Day where one of the oldest indigenous tribes in the country gather to watch the sun rise, ushering in the new year. Boats depart from either Puntarenas or Costa de Pajaros.

Card image

Average temperature: 31°C / 87°F

Colombia is one of those rare places that’s pretty nice all year round. But in December, even the rain-prone capital Bogotá is at its best, allowing you to head off on a graffiti tour around the La Candelaria ‘hood and take in the city’s vibey rooftop bars and restaurants at night. Don’t feel like traveling entirely solo? Flash Pack’s group tour for solo travelers in Colombia takes in the capital, before exploring the Comuna 13 barrio de Medellín , the colourful town of Guatapé and the Caribbean coast around Cartagena.

Move over, Peru… Colombia’s dining scene is emerging as one of South America’s best, with spots like molecular-minded El Cielo Restaurant in Medellín leading the pack.

Ready to take off on your next adventure? Join Flash Pack today to discover group solo trips with like-minded people in their 30s & 40s.

We have chosen the tour specifically because it was in German and also in other languages shown. Also on our voucher was again confirmed the tour with professional, German-speaking tour guide. Unfortunately, the tour guides did not speak German. We were able to help ourselves a bit with the translation app but we also missed a lot of information. We are very disappointed about this and expect compensation. The tour guides have tried and were very nice also the tour was very nice.

I like the HYOH (Hike Your Own Hike) part of this guided tour. I like the freedom to do as strenuous or as little as I want at the National Park stops. I like that yes, you can do things as a group but you aren't stuck going as fast or as slow as anyone else. Just mind what time to be back to the meeting spot & go for it!

Las Vegas, Sedona & Monument Valley – 5 days Tour

Las Vegas, Sedona & Monument Valley – 5 days

We really enjoyed this tour. The days on the bus are long as the distances travelled are vast but the places we saw made it all worth it. The coach was very comfortable, the tour was well organised and our guide Lorenzo & bus driver, Ozzie, kept us informed (about where we were going, an history of the places and what to expect next) and entertained throughout. The hotel accommodation was perfect for our needs. Definitely a tour worth doing. Family of four (including 2 teens)

What people love about USA Tours in December

Just couldn’t have been better. Extremely professional guides Robin and Sarah were highly knowledgable, friendly and organised. Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Highly recommended to everyone - would do another tour with South West Adventure Tours in a heartbeat.
Excellent trip. There was a lot of driving but it was worth it. We had excellent guides with information that wasn't listed on the website. There was a lot of driving but many stops to break that up. I have been on a number of tours in America and Europe and found the hotels on this tour to much nicer than in the past. The tours of Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon were nothing less than SPECTACULAR. The guides on the bus and at the sites were more than knowledgeable. The bus was top of the line. I have already spread the name of this company to friends and family. Next year I will be looking for my next trip with this company. Judy Lockie, Ontario, Canada.
Guide was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a good group

Destination X

Adventure travel series Destination X has been officially picked up to series by NBC .

The show is expected to air on the network in 2025 and the U.S. version of the Belgian format will be produced by production company Twofour , which is also making a separate British version for the BBC.

Biden Vs. Trump Live: Networks & Cable Newsers Release Statement Urging Candidates To "Publicly Commit" To Debate

The BBC greenlit its own version last year with Twofour producing.

It is a similar model employed on breakout mystery format The Traitors.

Destination X sees a group of contestants go on the road trip of a lifetime but they have no idea of their location. In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey turns into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.

At the end of each episode, the contestant who places an X on a map furthest from the actual location packs their bags. The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

Twofour, which is owned by British broadcaster ITV, is behind series such as Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller . It will co-produce the NBC version with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Production will begin later this year.

Caroline Davies, Andy Cadman, Dan Adamson and David Clews will exec produce the NBC version.

“ Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP, Unscripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This show is an epic international travel adventure combined with the ultimate guessing game. Even if you’ve never been on a plane, you can play along.”

“The entire Twofour team couldn’t be more proud to have won the tender to produce this incredible adventure format, particularly given the pedigree of the other companies in the process,” said Dan Adamson, Twofour MD. “Our editorial ambition for this project is fortunately matched by our best-in-class production team, who constantly make the impossible possible. We are excited to be on this journey with our talented producing partners at UTAS and grateful to the brilliant commissioning teams at both NBCU and the BBC for the hard work and creativity they have already put into the process.”
