Two stand up paddle boarders on misty morning Taken off the mountainous coast of Catalina Island California

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Best Weekend Getaways Palm Springs CA

Palm Springs

Palm Springs, California

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Dive deeper into the history of this style via a three-hour tour with architectural historian and author Michael Stern , which includes the chance to visit private homes. Among the countless hotels decked out in midcentury-modern stylings for an overnight, the Parker Palm Springs remains the standout—a riot of color and witty touches from designer Jonathan Adler.

Paso Robles, California

Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

Hotel Del Coronado San Diego California

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. And even if San Diego has 24/7 beach weather, don’t forget: This is the Christmas Capital of America .

From Chicago

Saugatuck Michigan

Southwest Michigan

Saugatuck and its surroundings in Southwest Michigan have recently attracted newcomers due to a focus on the state’s extraordinary produce (Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity). Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva Wisconsin

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Door County Wisconsin

Cave Point in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Boonsboro Maryland

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

Boonsboro, Maryland

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? Nowhere better to overnight than Inn Boonsboro , owned by novelist Nora Roberts, where each of the eight rooms is named after a fictional couple like The Princess Bride’s Westley and Buttercup.

Alexandria Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia

It might only be a 20-minute drive away—or shorter, if you hop on the metro—but this historic town still feels like a getaway and consistently ranks among the top five small cities in the country in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Cape Hatteras North Carolina

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains West Virginia

Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Lake and wetlands with greenery and shrubbery and a small river leading to a small pond against a larger body of water...

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Florida St. Petersburg Salvador Dali Museum

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West Florida

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

Aerial view of Florida Everglades

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

From Dallas

The water in Buffalo Springs at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma is full of green plant life

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg Texas Downtown

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top Cafe in Texas. Image shot 2005

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro Canyon. Texas

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

Whisk yourself away on a weekend getaway

What is a mini-vacation.

A mini-vacation is a romantic weekend away, it’s 4 days of sun, sea, and sand, it’s an adventure for the whole family. It’s whatever you want it to be, mini-sized. To build your dream mini-vacation, enter your desired location and your travel dates, and let us take care of the rest. When you build your Expedia package deal, you bundle your accommodation, flights, and car rentals and save money.

Where should I go for a mini-vacation?

For a shot of sea and sun, head for the golden sands of Southern California , or hit the white-hot party heat of Miami . Prefer the great outdoors? Book a cosy condo in the mountains of Montana or enjoy the bo-ho chic of Washington State . Maybe you want a bit of culture and history, so stay at a spa hotel in Washington, DC . The choice is yours!

Where should I go for the best weekend getaway?

For a weekend of bright lights in the big city, try the high life and head to Vegas . If you want something a little more sedate, book a weekend in Waikiki . Or, if you’ve got the whole family in tow, book a stay in San Diego or a vacation rental in Myrtle Beach .

How can I find the best weekend getaway deals?

Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a mini-vacation, Expedia always has amazing deals. You can choose from our attractive offers that include accommodation, flights, and car rentals, or build your own package and still bundle to save. Our vast network of partners and advanced filters make it easy to find, compare, and craft a trip that speaks to you and your wallet.

How do I plan a cheap weekend getaway?

To find cheap getaways, you can filter your Expedia search results by your per-night budget, so you only see available accommodation that suits you on the dates you want to travel. Look out for special offers and sign in to see member prices on all kinds of cheap weekend getaways. You may be best off looking in the low season and away from the main tourist areas to find more cheap trips ideas. If you’re traveling in a larger group, you might find a vacation rental or condo resort is a cheaper option than everyone booking a hotel room.

How do you plan a weekend romantic getaway on a budget?

Expedia makes it easy to plan the best weekend getaways for couples, even if you’re on a tight budget. You can filter your tempting search results by price, but more importantly, you can filter by amenities, such as hot tub, ocean view, spa to tailor make your unforgettable couple’s retreat.

Where should I go on a girls’ trip?

A weekend of skiing in Colorado –party included–or lounging on the beach in Cancun ? Mooching through the markets in Portland, Oregon , or hitting the big shops in New York . Whatever makes your best weekend getaway with the girls, you can get a great deal that suits everyone’s pocket with Expedia.

What are some excellent family weekend getaways?

If your family has a sense of adventure, head for Alabama and a mini-vacation that could include dolphin spotting, fishing, jet-skiing, and more. If you’re a brood of city slickers, take in the culture of Milwaukee , with exhibitions, museums, and sightseeing for all ages. Whatever family weekend getaway you’re looking for, we have it at Expedia.

Your Ultimate Guide to Pull Off a Weekend Backpacking Trip

These short-but-sweet hikes are the perfect microadventure for busy people. Here’s how to tackle them.

While America’s long-distance treks top adventure bucket lists, months-long stints on the Appalachian, Continental Divide, or Pacific Crest trails may not go over well with your day job. That’s where microadventure-style  backpacking trips can give you a taste of life in the wild.

Here are seven short-and-sweet weekend trips that pack in scenery, solitude, and adventure, sans extended vacation. Plus: how to pack and plan for your adventure.

What Should I Pack for a Weekend Backpacking Trip?

Strategizing supplies and gear—and how to pack it all—can feel like a mental mountain climb. To help you simplify this step, we talked backpacking kits with Chloe Childs, operations manager at professional mountain-guiding service Aspen Expeditions. Her overarching advice: test before you buy. “There was a backpack I thought I was going to buy, then I went into the store and it absolutely did not fit me,” Childs says. “Try everything on. It’s obviously going to be a little uncomfortable at first, or just feel different, but it shouldn’t hurt you.”

Read on for Childs’s weekend must-haves, and keep our ultimate backpacking checklist handy to compare and contrast your kit options.

  • Backpack : Look for at least 40- or 50-liter capacity in a weekend-sized backpack, and buy a rain cover (or a pack that comes with one). Bring extra dry bags for fragile items, such as your phone.
  • Sleeping equipment : Overnighting needs include a tent and rain fly, tent poles and stakes, a sleeping bag, and a sleeping pad (do not forget the sleeping pad). If it’s your first time, make sure to set up and break down your tent and sleeping gear at home first, Childs says.
  • Hydration : Pack a water bottle or reservoir, and a water filtration system, such as a pump, squeeze, or gravity device, plus tablets for backup. Try electrolyte tablets, such as Nuun, for extra hydration.
  • Food : Make a food plan , with adequate meals and easy-to-eat snacks, such as jerky, fruit snacks, or gels. Childs recommends creating a spreadsheet to tally quantities. For freeze-dried meals, you’ll need a camp stove and fuel, as well as waterproof matches or a lighter, cookware, utensils, and cleaning gear. Check local regulations for campfire and food-storage requirements, too.
  • Clothing : Aim for a simple hiking wardrobe: underwear, socks, shorts, pants, T-shirts, an insulating layer, a rain jacket, beanie, sun hat, and sunglasses, depending on the season. “For the most part, you’ll wear the same [thing] every day,” says Childs. “One extra change and a lot of socks are great.” Hiking boots are also a must; test them well before your trip. If space allows, pack camp shoes to give your toes a break when you’re not hiking.
  • Toiletries : Like any vacation, pack the toiletries you need for personal hygiene, but don’t go overboard. Think: hand sanitizer, sunscreen, toothbrush, bug repellent, and, to poop outdoors (responsibly!) ,  a trowel, toilet paper, and waste bags.
  • Electronics : Bring a headlamp, power bank, satellite phone or personal locator beacon, and spare batteries, Childs says. For safety, have a map downloaded on your phone via an app like Gaia GPS . Don’t forget a laminated paper map of the region, too.
  • Emergency : Pack a first-aid kit, as well as duct tape, medications, moleskin, a multitool, and a fire starter.

Tips to Plan a Brief Backpacking Trip

Preparation is just as important as gear. Heed Childs’s advice:

  • Read the forums : Whether you look at local hiking forums or dedicated backpacking Facebook groups, Childs says online hiking communities are essential for monitoring conditions, potential restrictions, permitting, water availability, guidelines like how far to sleep from water, and trailhead parking.
  • Do a dry run : That pile of gear may look like an easy fit, but you won’t know if it works until you try—and you want to try before you hit the trail. “Unpack and repack at least once or twice so you’re not doing it for the first time in the backcountry,” Childs says. Additionally, experiment with packing cubes to stay organized.
  • Remember elevation : A ten-mile hike in the Great Lakes feels different than a ten-mile hike in the Rockies. Know your fitness, and pay attention to both mileage and elevation gain, says Childs. “Look at where you’re starting, then how much you’re gaining and losing.”
  • Seek guidance : If this is your first time backpacking, consider joining a class at your local outdoor retailer or head out on a weekend outing with a guide to learn the ropes, Childs says. “It’s nice to go with a guide even for one night to see how everything is done—how they set up or make food. It’s all these things you don’t think about.”
  • Leave No Trace : Before your trip begins, study Leave No Trace’s seven principles for responsible outdoor adventures, including proper waste disposal, campfire safety, and respecting wildlife.
  • Stay fueled : Plan to make proper eating and drinking a priority on the trail. “A good rule of thumb: If you’re stopping, take a drink and eat some snacks,” she says, noting small snacks to keep your blood sugar up are integral to avoid crashing.

The 7 Best Weekend Backpacking Trips in the U.S.

Four pass loop: maroon bells-snowmass wilderness area, colorado.

Maroon Bells and Lake at sunrise Colorado

  • Mileage: 26 miles, loop
  • Elevation gain: 8,000 feet
  • Days required: 3 to 5 days
  • Permit required: Yes

Childs’ favorite Colorado weekend backpacking adventure is the Four Pass Loop , a traverse through the towering pines and peak-reflecting lakes of Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area near Aspen. This 26-mile route is no walk in the park. It gains 8,000 feet of elevation from the trailhead near Maroon Lake and crosses four mountain passes that exceed 12,000 feet. It’s a quad-killer, best completed from July to September, but it’s worth the lactic-acid onslaught. In addition to alpine scenery, backpackers could spot elk, moose, mountain goats, and black bears (so bring bear spray), not to mention colorful wildflowers that dot the slopes.

The Enchantments Traverse: Enchantment Area Wilderness, Washington

Dragontail Peak along The Enchantment Traverse

  • Mileage: 18 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 4,500 feet
  • Days required: 2 to 3 days

Few weekend backpacking trails embody Pacific Northwest splendor like the Enchantments , an 18-mile adventure through central Washington’s larch-lined wilderness. The route, which starts via the Stuart Lake trailhead outside Bavaria-inspired Leavenworth, rolls by snow-flecked crag, mirror-still lakes, and roaming mountain goats. Some pursue the trek by day—a feat that takes a rough 10 to 15 hours—but for a milder and more immersive jaunt, wait to nab the permit for overnighting. When you do, follow the Forest Service’s guidance  to keep the flora and fauna, particularly its resident goats, safe.

Cirque of the Towers: Wind River Range, Wyoming

Cirque of the Towers Wind River Range Wyoming

  • Mileage: 24 miles, loop
  • Elevation gain: 3,900 feet
  • Days required: 3 to 4 days
  • Permit required: No

Cirque of the Towers looks like a postcard from Patagonia. But this amphitheater of craggy 12,000-foot fangs, and the still lakes that reflect them, can be found in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, located along the Continental Divide. A weekend backpacking trip along the Cirque of the Towers loop, which starts from Big Sandy Lake, provides the perfect landscape perch, not to mention a solid roughly 24-mile workout with nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain. No permit is required, but backpackers are asked not to camp within a quarter-mile of Lonesome Lake. The trail starts at the Big Sandy Trailhead, just over 50 miles from Pinedale, Wyoming.

Lost Coast Trail: King Range National Conservation Area, California

Mattole Beach in King Range National Conservation Area California

  • Mileage: 24.6 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: ~50 feet

It may be a waterfront trek with minimal elevation gain, but the Lost Coast Trail in northern California is much more than a beach saunter. This challenging and roughly 25-mile outing traverses boulders, pebbles, and sand—with the challenge of unpredictable waves and weather that requires hypervigilant planning and monitoring. The reward? Three to four days along this untamed California coastline. The Lost Coast’s stretch of the Pacific shoreline is so rugged that the state veered its coastal Highway 1 inland here. Hiking is one of the only ways to reach the patchwork of pines-meet-the-sea scenery, with black-sand beaches, wildflower-dotted hills, and sea lions and elephant seals adding entertainment to the trail. Your north-to-south trip begins at Mattole Beach in Humboldt County. A permit is required for overnighting, and campsites abound along the trail. Book the shuttle back to the parking area from the trail terminus, black sand beach in Shelter Cove.

Greenstone Ridge Trail: Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Lookout Louise Isle Royale National Park

  • Mileage: 42 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 4,320 feet
  • Days required: 5 to 8 days

Hit the pine-flanked spine of Isle Royale National Park for a long weekend, or weeklong, adventure on Lake Superior. The 42-mile Greenstone Ridge Trail runs the length of the island, from Windigo Harbor in the west to Rock Harbor in the east. It’s a treat of topography, with forest jaunts, rocky climbs, boulder-dashed shores, and makeshift bridges through marsh and swamplands that keep you on your toes. Moose sightings only add to the thrill, while echoing loon calls by the waterfront campgrounds put a soothing cap on your backcountry day. Given the remoteness, you’ll need a multi-hour ferry ride or seaplane from Copper Harbor, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota, to even reach the trailhead. If your vacation days don’t allow for a full Isle Royale traverse, stitch together closer campsites, such as a three-day out-and-back from Rock Harbor to Moskey Basin. The national park is open from mid-April through October. Plus, here’s our best packing advice for Isle Royale .

Art Loeb Trail: Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina

Orange Tent Along the Art Loeb Trail in North Carolina

  • Mileage: 30.1 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 9,000 feet
  • Days required: 2 to 5 days

Admire Pisgah National Forest’s Appalachian balds and deep-green panoramas via the Art Loeb Trail , a 30-mile point-to-point route 40-some minutes south of Asheville. The trail meanders along rocky ridges and over four 6,000-foot peaks, including 6,214-foot Black Balsam Knob, with stints near the lush Davidson River valley and Blue Ridge Parkway. No permit is necessary for this North Carolina outing, but you will need bear canisters. Additionally, campfires are prohibited. Visit in the summer for a verdant wonderland, or autumn for an eye-popping palette of yellow pines and cherry-hued hemlocks.

Devil’s Path Trail: Catskill Park, New York

Devils Path Hiking Trail in the Catskill Mountains

  • Mileage: 25.2 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 8,500 feet

As the trail name alludes, the Castkills’ Devil’s Path is challenging. The 25-mile out-and-back path crosses five of the region’s high peaks: Indian Head, Plateau, Twin, Sugarloaf, and West Kill, which are all above 3,500 feet. This red-blaze adventure begins at the Prediger Trailhead, roughly two hours driving from Manhattan. You’ll tackle loose rock, scrambling, and aggravating false summits throughout, but the pain is well worth the gain. The Devil’s Path features some of the best Catskills vistas, with pine-dotted peaks, hills unfurling to the horizon, and solitude you may not expect to find within 120 miles of the Big Apple.

Salt Lake City: Plan the Perfect Weekend Getaway

Eric Jay Toll

The writer was hosted.

Sitting next to the lofty windows in a restaurant at 11,000 feet (3,350m) up in the Wasatch Mountains, through the cleft between the towering mountains, I believe I could see the mountain where we hiked earlier in the day.

This was a getaway to Salt Lake City and Utah. Arriving, there’s the Great Salt Lake on one side and the west slope of the Rocky Mountains on the other. It meant a morning hike under a warm spring sun and an afternoon skiing down the slopes.

All that is oh so close to downtown SLC.

Why Salt Lake City in Utah for a Getaway

Salt Lake City is a year-round destination for a weekend or a couple of weeks.

Of course, he had a bit of bias, but Ryan from Visit Salt Lake City  told our group of writers, “Salt Lake City has a lot to do on its own, and it’s in the center of many other places to see. It’s a really vibrant place for a getaway.”

Time is what counts when planning a getaway to Salt Lake City. The Utah  capital delivers a nice taste of urban dining and activities, yet it’s minutes from wilderness and recreation paradise.

The city itself is a weekend destination, and with more time, you can explore Utah’s five national parks, six national monuments, four national trails, historical sites and the second largest of America’s national recreation areas.

Feeling like “I’ve got to get out of town,” the city is a perfect weekend destination. If feeling like “I’ve got to get to another planet,” Salt Lake is the ideal base camp  for exploring some of the world’s most surreal landscapes.

Why Salt Lake City for Weekend Getaways

We were doing the short personal “battery” recharge over a few days and a later trip to Red Rock country. Salt Lake is central to an amazing center for a weekend trip, a week’s road trip or an escape-the-world bucket list adventure.

One nice feature of downtown Salt Lake City is its walkability. We could walk to nearly all the major destinations from our downtown hotel.

What to Do in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City has various restaurants for all tastes and budgets. Sources like Trip Advisor  and Yelp have reasonably comprehensive listings. The best bet is to go local. Eating at a same-place-everywhere national chain can be saved for home. Ask the hotel concierge or front desk for recommended local dining spots.

Utah once had a challenging reputation for enjoying beer, wine or cocktails. Much of that changed with the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. You can get a drink in Utah.

Like some early New England colonies, Utah was settled as a theocratic territory with the arrival of the Mormons on July 24, 1847, Pioneer Day, a significant state holiday. Utah is a state rich in history, and it’s the spiritual and geographic center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Salt Lake City retains many of its historic buildings and areas.

Temple Square is the center of the faith and city. On this 10-acre site are the original Mormon Temple and the Tabernacle, the home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The Tabernacle is open to the public, as are many of the choir’s rehearsals.

The notable architecture draws thousands of people every year. We crossed the very wide streets typical of Utah towns and entered the park-like setting. The historic temple, a testament to design and faith, was shrouded in scaffolding. Damaged in a 2019 earthquake, the Mormon Church is retrofitting the pioneer-era building with earthquake mitigation. It’s to be completed in 2026.

“We’ll drive to the trailhead. We could walk there from here, but we have too much to do today,” said Ryan as our group gathered to board our SUV for the morning hike. “Other trails are just a short walk from downtown.”

We headed to the Living Room Trail, which tops off at a Great Salt Desert overlook with the Oquihir Mountains in the distance and that valley holding Salt Lake and its closest suburbs.

“The rock formation at the top gives it the name,” he told us.

After the hike under the warm sun, we headed to a nearby ski resort at the top of Cottonwood Canyon. In Salt Lake, it’s possible to have a spring hike and downhill run on the same day.

What to Do in Utah from Salt Lake City

From Salt Lake City, there’s an adventure at all points of the compass.

North – Hot Springs and Cross-Country Trails

Heading north of Salt Lake City opens adventures in the Cache-Wasatch Mountains in both Utah and Idaho. Just across the state line, Lava Springs, Idaho, is known for its natural and mineralized hot springs.

There’s more in northern Utah.

“That is the most amazing color,” said my companion when we made the curve heading down from the Cache Mountains towards Garden City on the Utah side of the state line. The panorama before us was Bear Lake. “It’s the color of the Caribbean.”

The giant freshwater lake is colorized to a deep turquoise. Boating, swimming and a state park border the lake.

Having lived in Logan on the west side of the mountains, I can personally say that some of the best Nordic skiing I’ve enjoyed is a short drive from this Cache Valley  city.

A couple of hours northwest of Salt Lake City is the Golden Spike National Historic Site, where the famous “last spike” was driven into the railroad ties connecting America’s first transcontinental railroad.

West – the Famous Bonneville Speedway

To the west is the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, a unique, otherworldly place where you can put your car on the salt flats and see how fast it goes.

“I wouldn’t recommend it,” said a ranger from the Bureau of Land Management in Salt Lake City. “The salt doesn’t dry out until mid-July. Drive on it when it’s got any moisture, and you’ll break through the crust and get stuck. It’s a $600 tow.”

He didn’t want his name used because he was not authorized to speak to the media, but he said the Salt Flats are a place to experience any time of the year.

“It’s especially an experience at sunset because of how the light plays on the salt,” he explained. “It’s an area so flat and vast that the light tricks your eyes and sometimes you can see it in photos.”

The salt flats are about 90 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City via Interstate 80. On the west side of the Bonneville Salt Flats is the legendary sculpture, “Metaphor – Tree of Utah.” There’s an unofficial pull-off for westbound traffic.

East – The Greatest Snow on Earth

Mormon leader Brigham Young was looking from a terrace on the west side of the Wasatch Mountains when he said, “This is the place,” selecting the site for the faith’s capital city. Today, most people arriving in Salt Lake City look east to the ski resorts and towns at the top of the range.

Salt Lake City is a mecca for avid skiers and snowboarding. Skiing is less than an hour from Salt Lake’s airport.

Most ski resorts operate year-round, changing from snow sports to outdoor activities, like mountain biking and hiking trails.

A trip to Park City or Deer Valley may be among the most romantic getaway destinations in the Intermountain West. Quaint Park City, home of the U.S. Olympic ski team and the famous Sundance Film Festival, has many resort hotels, dainty beds and breakfast, and plenty of vacation rental homes.

In the summer, a ski jump with thousands of Teflon bearings allows jumpers to practice flying into the air and landing in a pool. The Olympic Park feature is open to non-Olympians.

Next door, Deer Valley is designed as an elite ski-in resort that allows only skiing—no snowboards. Once the limousine is parked, it’s not needed until guests leave. The ski lodge is within walking or skiing distance from the lodging.

Snowbird Ski Resort

After the morning hike, we headed up Cottonwood Canyon to the Snowbird Ski Resort  at the top of the canyon. It was a brilliantly bright late March day. The slopes were still packed with over 100 inches (254cm) of snow. Even though the air temperature was 48F (9C), skiers were whooshing down the slopes, a few hearty souls wearing shorts.

Snowbird hosted us for lunch at its 11,000-foot peak restaurant. Stew and chili were perfect complements to the weather, and we watched skiers from the warmth of the dining room’s near floor-to-ceiling windows.

Ski trails ran in all directions from the mountaintop, classified for beginning, intermediate, advanced and “different breed” skiers. The snow was packed and fast, even with the spring sun beaming on the crowds.

Riley from Snowbird toured us through the facility’s different restaurants and shops. There are rooms at the ski lodge level for those focused on a trip hitting the slopes.

South – The Real Red Rock Country

We headed to southern Utah, the land of red rock formations and slot canyons. The landscape contrasted bright orange-red rock with deep green scrubby Juniper trees and shrubs.

As we hiked up the park’s most popular trail, excitement and anticipation filled the air. It wasn’t just the altitude that left me a little breathless, but the rush to beat the crowd and stand beneath the iconic Delicate Arch, a natural wonder symbolizing America’s beauty.

Delicate Arch, in Arches National Park , Moab, Utah, is four hours south of Salt Lake City on a beautiful, easy-to-drive scenic route down to the Colorado Plateau.

Arriving before 7 a.m., we bypassed the timed entry requirement, a smart move to ensure we could find places to park near the Delicate Arch hiking trails. For those who prefer a more relaxed start, the option to reserve your entry time in advance at Recreation.gov  is a convenient way to plan your red rock road trip.

Despite the early arrival at its amphitheater, a short line of hikers waited to have pictures taken under the arch. Later in the day, the wait can be as long as a half-hour.

“Can you take our photo?” the man in front of me asked. He was with his wife and two pre-teens. “I’ve wanted to get this photo for a long time. I’ve seen it on Instagram and wanted to get us in a photo like those.”

He handed back his camera, and the four headed along the narrow trail and lined up under the arch. It’s a tradition at Delicate Arch. When it’s your turn to stand under the magnificent rock formation, the next person in line snaps the photo.

What to Explore

It’s an easy journey from Salt Lake City. Out of the urban cluster and into the desert, you’ll drive from cream colors through deep green mountains to the heart of red rock country. Oh, there are many imitators, but this is the real thing.

Spending a few nights in Moab put us in the middle of Arches  and Canyonlands  national parks and  Dead Horse Point State Park .

“It’s hard to believe those two rivers carved these canyons,” said Kendall from Chicago while we put on boots. She and her husband, Terry, were loading their gear back into their rental. “This is our first trip west, and I feel like I’m on another planet.”

Terry nodded, saying, “You see the pictures all the time, but coming here in person, it’s big. Out there, you have to turn almost completely around to take in what you’re seeing.”

He pointed to our destination, the very tip at Grand View Point. It was an under two-mile (3.2km) reasonably level hike along the canyon rim to see a multi-million-year-old view. We meandered down the Grand View Trail to the point and looked to the southwest down the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area  into the setting sun.

Below us on the rugged White Rim Trail, a couple of jeeps and a cluster of cyclists rode on the rocky dirt track. The trail is a bucket list destination for mountain biking. To drive it, a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is needed. High clearance is especially necessary; according to the ranger, my Honda CR-V was unsuitable for the White Rim.

Canyonlands Highlights

Tomorrow was to start the next leg of our Utah Grand Circle . We didn’t have enough time to do the entire route on this trip. Our next destinations were Capitol Reef  and Bryce Canyon National Parks ,  Grand Staircase Escalante  and Cedar Breaks  National Monuments.

Sadly, we were going to miss the other parks on the Grand Circle Route: Zion National Park ,  Grand Canyon  and  Mesa Verde  national parks, Canyon of the Ancients ,  Bears Ears  and Hovenweep  national monuments, Monument Valley  and Four Corners  Navajo tribal parks, and Valley of Fire  State Park near Las Vegas, Nevada; Utah’s Kodachrome Basin  and Coral Pink Sand Dunes  state parks.

“That’s a long list of missed parks,” chuckled Ranger Jake at the Canyonlands Visitor Center when he asked if we planned to road trip the complete Grand Circle. “You know it’s probably the most scenic drive in the USA.”

He was right; seeing this iconic Western landscape requires about ten days. It delivers other planet rock formations, stirring blue desert skies and contrasting deep green trees against the brilliant red rock. All that is missing are Roadrunner and Coyote.

How to Get to Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City International Airport is about ten non-rush hour minutes west of downtown. Getting downtown is simple, too, taking the light rail trains from the airport to the city’s center. Delta and Southwest have hubs at the airport, and United, American and several discount carriers also offer service.

Salt Lake City is the junction of Interstates I-80 and I-15. Amtrak’s California Zephyr, which arrives late at night and overnight, serves the city from Chicago or the San Francisco Bay Area.

Where to Stay in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is a family-friendly destination with a broad selection of national chains, locally flagged hotels, and vacation rental accommodations. Properties are spread throughout the metro area, so finding budget-fitting lodging anywhere is possible.

When traveling, I usually book a place in the downtown area. It’s more convenient to have a greater selection of activities, restaurants and places to visit.

What This Writer Likes Best About Utah

Red Rock Country, from Zion National Park to Arches National Park, is a personal favorite. The extraordinary landscapes, the variety of landscape viewing opportunities, and the Colorado Plateau weather bring me to southern Utah at least once a year.

Broaden your perspectives of what to see. Arches and Zion are generally packed with visitors. Escape the crowds and check out the area’s state parks and national monuments. Capitol Reef and Canyonlands are great destinations for beauty and adventure without all the crowds.

Spend some time in Salt Lake City, but move the lodging to St. George ,  Panguitch ,  Springdale  or  Moab  for a visit south.

The Best Weekend Getaways for Couples

Want to spice things up in your relationship? Then it's time to get out of town.

Patrick Tappe/EyeEm/Getty Images

Nothing keeps the sparks flying like traveling together. Navigating new places with your significant other while spending quality one-on-one time is a great way to deepen your bond and create lasting memories.

Whether for Valentine's Day, an anniversary, or just a long holiday weekend, why not go away together to a rustic lodge, laze on a tropical beach with an umbrella-topped beverage, or cheers to your love at a countryside winery somewhere warm and sunny? Whatever your idea of a romantic escape is, we'll help you get there with these great weekend destinations perfect for couples. Get ready for starry-eyed bliss.

Montreal, Canada

If you're seeking a European-esque destination without the transatlantic flight, head to Montreal. This sophisticated Canadian metropolis is rich with history, centuries-old architecture, and bustling French bistros.

Most tourists shy away from Montreal until spring, so those who enjoy a winter wonderland vibe can delight in a quieter visit full of cold-weather charms, like ice skating at Parc La Fontaine, dogsledding in Mont Tremblant, and guided nighttime snowshoeing on Mont Royal complete with beautiful views of the city lights. Travelers can then warm up with hot chocolate by a roaring fire at one of Old Montreal's cushy hotels.

After checking out the vibrant downtown scene, couples can treat themselves to an indulgent massage or facial at the luxurious Spa St. James at The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal, or enjoy cocktails and tapas at the W Montreal's Living Room . The sexy space and its relaxed vibe will set the mood for romance.

Watch Hill, Rhode Island

Just a short drive from many locations in the northeast, Watch Hill is an idyllic place to visit year round. For an intimate stay, hightail it to Ocean House , a grand 1868 Victorian oceanfront beauty and the crown jewel of the New England town. Couples can enjoy long walks on the private white-sand beach and canoodling in front of the stately stone fireplace, cocktail in hand. There's a farm-to-table restaurant on site, plus a prestigious cooking school offering guests gourmet classes and intimate tastings.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is one of the Caribbean's best destinations for a romantic retreat. These easy-to-access islands — flights are under two hours from Miami and under four from New York — will have couples in paradise in no time.

For a dreamy place to call home for a few days, settle in at The Shore Club . The first resort on beautiful Long Bay Beach — the most private stretch of sand on the island of Providenciales — offers seclusion and modern amenities. Start your day on a paddle board over dazzling turquoise waters, lap up some much-needed R&R at four cabana-lined pools, and cap off your night with fresh seafood at SUI-REN, the resort's Japanese-Peruvian restaurant.

In between lounging, couples can embark on a lovely horseback ride along the white-sand beach or indulge in a stress-relieving spa treatment. And don't miss downtown Grace Bay, a hub for eateries, bars, shopping, and nightlife. There's so much on offer to refuel the spark in any relationship.

Palm Springs, California

Glamorized as Old Hollywood's vacation destination of choice, Palm Springs is still as hip as it was in Frank Sinatra's day. The desert oasis entices travelers with stylish resorts, world-class restaurants, and majestic desert views. It's a haven for hikers, adventure seekers, and golfers — with more than 100 area courses.

Try a backcountry Jeep tour through the San Andreas Fault Zone or make a trip to Joshua Tree National Park , about an hour's drive away. Looking to unwind? Soak in the natural healing waters at Desert Hot Springs or head to one of the area's many day spas for a hot-stone couples massage. Palm Springs also has a foodie scene, and many of the city's finest establishments offer patio dining under the stars.

For a relaxing staycation, book a suite at The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage . With everything from clifftop dining to a luxe spa surrounded by the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains, you won't have to leave the grounds to have an unforgettable weekend. There's postcard-worthy scenery in every direction, and we recommend taking it all in from a cabana at the pool while sipping an Arnold Palmer. The golf legend debuted the now-famous iced tea-lemonade drink in Palm Springs in the late '60s.

Walland, Tennessee

Take your love of adventure to new heights with a luxurious mountain retreat. Blackberry Mountain , a Relais & Châteaux resort nestled among 5,200 wondrous acres in the Great Smoky Mountains, is the perfect place to get cozy with your other half.

This rustic sanctuary balances a peaceful environment with active and wellness offerings. Outdoorsy couples can revel in everything from hiking, mountain biking, and candlelight yoga to relaxing forest baths, woodland meditation, and restorative spa treatments. After nourishing your mind and body, feed your soul at three one-of-a-kind restaurants that showcase Blackberry Farm's celebrated hospitality and culinary program.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston , called "Holy City" because of its long history of religious tolerance, is a beloved destination of many travelers due to its historic landmarks, cobblestone streets, booming food scene, and Southern charm.

Foodie couples will be in heaven: The culinary capital of the South boasts a myriad of standout spots and immersive experiences. Don't miss oysters at King Street's seafood stunner, The Ordinary , spicy fried chicken at Leon's Oyster Shop , and Texas-style brisket at Lewis Barbecue , just to name a few. For a post-dinner classic cocktail, belly up to The Bar & Patio at Husk . Fancy some bubbly? Check out the Champagne bar Camellias at Hotel Bennett.

Opt for a stay at the French Quarter Inn , a boutique gem in the heart of the historic district. At the end of a jam-packed (and no doubt delicious) day, the hotel's top-notch turndown service with a "pillow menu" — featuring seven different comfy options for resting your head — will ensure the sweetest dreams.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

The largest of the three Cayman Islands is the ultimate sanctuary for couples looking for a Caribbean beach oasis — at any pace. With warm, dry weather and fewer crowds than during the height of winter, early spring is an ideal time to visit Grand Cayman and its world-renowned Seven Mile Beach.

A range of water sports invites epic adventures surrounded by the island's sparkling waters. You can kayak through lush, tropical mangroves or charter a catamaran to Rum Point on the north coast. Want to indulge in some rest and relaxation with your beloved? Sun-drenched afternoons spent lounging on pink-sand beaches or entwined in a hammock will do the trick.

Grand Cayman's spectacular sunsets are a quintessential backdrop for passionate evenings. Catch magical views of the fiery spectacle at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa , followed by an exceptional dinner experience at Avecita with a custom chefs' counter tasting of seasonal, wood-fired fare that's unique to the Caribbean. Pro tip: snag a reservation in advance — there are only 30 seats and just one seating per night.

Paso Robles, California

Uncork that lovin' feeling with a jaunt to California 's third-largest wine region (following more famous territories, Napa and Sonoma). Nestled halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco along the state's central coast lies a vast rolling countryside speckled with vineyards, olive groves, farms, and ranches.

With its natural beauty and laid-back vibe, Paso Robles is a perfect stop for a relaxing long weekend. Wine is the main attraction here: Sip your way through cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, merlot, and more at 200-plus wineries. Many tastings take place on sun-drenched outdoor spaces with breathtaking vistas, creating a next-level experience. Visitors tend to fall in love with Paso's chill ambiance, and lodging is typically more affordable than in California's more well-known wine regions.

If you get wined out — is that even a thing? — you can switch it up by sampling local olive oils, touring a craft brewery, or taking a dip in a hot spring. Downtown, you'll find interesting boutiques and great eateries. Stop by The General Store for honey, olive oil, soaps, and handmade goods from area producers to bring home.

Park City, Utah

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

What's more dreamy than cozying up by a fireplace in a snowy mountain lodge? Having local whiskey and chocolates in hand, of course. Park City is a winter wonderland rich with small-town charms, and it's quickly accessible from Salt Lake City International Airport.

Hit the slopes at two world-class resorts — Park City Mountain and Deer Valley — which offer some of the world's greatest ski conditions. In between runs on fresh powder, savor magnificent snow-capped landscapes and gourmet fare at several on-mountain pit stops. For a stellar après-ski situation, make your way to the ski-in, ski-out St. Regis Deer Valley resort for decadent hot chocolate, fireside s'mores, and craft cocktails.

Beyond mountain sports, Utah's historic mining town is like a holiday postcard come to life, full of perfect date activities like sleigh rides, ice skating, hot-air balloon rides, dogsledding, and shopping along historic Main Street, where the facades of many acclaimed restaurants and saloons are preserved from the 1880s. Unwind with a whiskey flight at Park City's own High West Distillery . For an excellent candlelit dinner featuring local live music, head to Riverhorse on Main , then saddle up to popular No Name Saloon Bar & Grill for a nightcap. There's so much for couples to see and do in "Winter's Favorite Town."

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Just a short drive south from the Cancun airport, Playa del Carmen is situated along the Yucatán's palm-lined Caribbean coastline. With its unspoiled natural setting and upscale hotels, Mexico's Riviera Maya is a first-rate vacation destination — and an ideal escape for lovebirds seeking warm weather.

If privacy and luxury is your speed, say "hola" to the area's most romantic resort: The five-star Rosewood Mayakoba . Set along the edges of a freshwater lagoon, the property features refined accommodations with over-the-top amenities, heated plunge pools, and in-room mezcal to spice things up. You'll also find three infinity pools sunken in the sand, an open kitchen for interactive culinary experiences, and a beachfront fire pit to curl up next to in the moonlight.

New Paltz, New York

Looking for a place that's a short drive from New York City but feels worlds away? Reserve a room at Mohonk Mountain House . Family-owned and -operated since 1869, this Victorian resort is perched on the the banks of crystal blue Lake Mohonk in New Paltz.

The grand, castle-like property offers couples an award-winning spa, farm-to-table cuisine, and a range of daily outdoor activities. In winter, you can go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on groomed trails and ice skating on the private pavilion. Warmer months bring horseback riding, canoeing, and hiking in the surrounding Shawangunk Ridge.

Leisurely, romantic days are also welcome: Sip hot chocolate and snuggle up by one of the stone fireplaces, soak in the outdoor heated mineral pool, or watch the sunset from rocking chairs on the porch. Just being with your sweetheart, surrounded by pristine mountain wilderness, is enough to make you fall in love all over again.

But doing things with your teens that are out of your comfort zone is a great way to connect and build memories- so it looks like I’ll be heading up in a hot air balloon sometime soon.

Teen Travel Programs and Solo Teen Travel

We absolutely love traveling with our kids but especially as they get older we want them to try different travel experiences – sometimes on their own. You have two options for encouraging your teen to travel without you. One, you can help them organize or send them off on their own or with friends. If you’ve built good travel habits with your kids this can be an incredible way for you kids to see the world, especially for older kids.

Another option if you are reluctant to send your kids out into the world by themself if to send them on one of the many travel programs for teens. These programs off teen group travel experiencing all around the world. You can find teen travel programs or teen volunteer programs for almost anywhere around the world. These are often on the expensive side but offer incredible experiences for teens.

After working for several year for a teen travel adventure program I strongly encourage you to consider this if it’s within your budget.

what-to-pack-for-a-weekend-camping-trip

Introduction

Are you ready to embark on an exciting outdoor adventure? A weekend camping trip is the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in nature. But before you head out into the wilderness, it’s important to ensure that you have everything you need to make your camping trip a success.

From choosing the right gear to packing essential items, careful planning can make all the difference between a memorable camping experience and a frustrating one. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate through the process of packing for a weekend camping trip, making sure you don’t miss out on any important items.

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a beginner, there are a few key factors to consider when deciding what to pack. These include the type of camping you’ll be doing, the weather conditions you may encounter, and the activities you plan to engage in during your trip. By taking these factors into account, you can ensure that you have all the necessary gear and equipment to stay comfortable, safe, and entertained throughout your camping adventure.

So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and let’s dive into the essential items you’ll need for your weekend camping trip. From clothing and footwear to cooking equipment, hygiene essentials, and more, we’ve got you covered.

Choosing the Right Gear

When it comes to packing for a weekend camping trip, selecting the right gear is crucial. The gear you choose will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of camping you plan to do and the specific conditions you’ll be facing. Here are a few key gear items to consider:

  • Tent: Your tent is your home away from home, so it’s important to choose one that is suitable for your needs. Consider the size, weight, and weather resistance of the tent when making your selection.
  • Sleeping bag: A good sleeping bag is essential for a comfortable night’s sleep. Look for one that is appropriate for the expected temperatures during your camping trip.
  • Sleeping pad or air mattress: Adding a sleeping pad or air mattress can provide extra insulation and cushioning, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.
  • Camp stove: If you’ll be cooking meals at your campsite, a camp stove is a must-have item. Look for one that is lightweight, compact, and easy to use.
  • Camp chairs: Having a couple of comfortable camp chairs can make lounging around the campfire much more enjoyable.
  • Cooler: If you plan to bring perishable food and drinks, a cooler will help keep them fresh and prevent spoilage.
  • Backpack: A properly fitting backpack is essential for carrying your gear during hikes and exploring the surrounding areas.
  • Headlamp or flashlight: Don’t forget to pack a reliable light source for navigating in the dark.

These are just a few examples of the gear you may want to consider bringing on your camping trip. Depending on your specific needs and preferences, you may also want to bring items such as a camping hammock, portable camping shower, GPS device, or campfire cooking tools.

Before finalizing your gear selection, it’s a good idea to research the campsite you’ll be visiting. Check if there are any specific regulations or restrictions, as this may affect the gear you can bring. Additionally, consider the distance you’ll need to hike to reach your campsite and assess the weight and portability of your gear accordingly.

By carefully choosing the right gear for your camping trip, you can ensure that you’re prepared for any situation and maximize your enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Clothing and Footwear

When it comes to packing clothing and footwear for your weekend camping trip, it’s important to strike a balance between comfort, functionality, and the specific weather conditions you’ll be facing. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Layered clothing: Pack a variety of clothing layers to accommodate changing temperatures throughout the day and night. This can include t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, sweaters or fleece jackets, and a waterproof or insulated outer layer.
  • Pants and shorts: Opt for durable and quick-drying pants or shorts that can withstand outdoor activities. Consider packing a pair of convertible pants that can easily transform into shorts if needed.
  • Undergarments and socks: Pack enough undergarments and socks for the duration of your trip. Choose moisture-wicking materials to keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Swimwear: If your camping trip includes swimming opportunities, don’t forget to pack your swimwear. It’s also useful to have a microfiber towel for quick drying.
  • Hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun’s rays by bringing a hat and sunglasses. These items will provide shade for your face and help prevent sunburn.
  • Hiking boots or sturdy footwear: Invest in a good pair of hiking boots or sturdy shoes that provide ankle support and have good traction. Make sure to break them in before your trip to avoid blisters.
  • Sandals or water shoes: It’s always nice to have a pair of sandals or water shoes for walking around the campsite, shower facilities, or for water activities.

When selecting clothing and footwear, it’s important to check the weather forecast for your camping destination. This will help you pack accordingly and prepare for any unexpected weather changes.

Additionally, don’t forget to pack extra clothing items in case of wet weather or any accidents. It’s better to be prepared than to find yourself uncomfortable due to lack of clean and dry clothing.

Remember, the key is to pack versatile clothing items that can be layered and adapted to different weather conditions. By packing the right clothing and footwear, you’ll stay comfortable and ready for any outdoor adventure that comes your way during your weekend camping trip.

Sleep System

A good night’s sleep is essential for enjoying your camping trip to the fullest. To ensure you rest well in the great outdoors, you’ll need to pack a suitable sleep system. Here are some key items to include:

  • Sleeping bag: Choose a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the expected temperatures during your camping trip. Consider factors such as insulation type, temperature rating, and weight.
  • Sleeping pad or air mattress: Providing insulation and cushioning, a sleeping pad or air mattress enhances your comfort while sleeping. Look for one that is lightweight, compact, and easy to inflate.
  • Pillow: Though not necessary, a camping pillow can make a significant difference in your sleep quality by providing extra support and comfort. There are inflatable options available that are easy to pack.
  • Extra blankets or sleeping bag liner: Depending on the weather conditions, you may want to bring additional blankets or a sleeping bag liner for added warmth.

Once you have gathered these items, it’s essential to set up your sleep system properly. Place the sleeping pad or air mattress on the tent floor, followed by your sleeping bag laid out flat. If using extra blankets, layer them on top for added warmth. Arrange your pillow for optimal comfort.

Keep in mind that the temperature can drop significantly during the night, so it’s crucial to insulate your sleeping space. Make sure your tent is properly sealed to minimize drafts and consider wearing thermal base layers or using a hot water bottle if needed.

Remember to test your sleep system at home before your camping trip to ensure everything is in working order and that you find it comfortable. This will give you a chance to make any necessary adjustments or replacements if needed.

By packing a suitable sleep system and setting it up properly, you’ll be able to recharge your energy and wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another day of adventure during your weekend camping trip.

Cooking Equipment

One of the joys of camping is being able to cook and enjoy meals amidst nature. To make delicious and satisfying meals during your weekend camping trip, it’s important to pack the right cooking equipment. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Camp stove: A reliable and easy-to-use camp stove is a must for cooking meals at your campsite. Look for one that is portable, with adjustable heat settings and stable support.
  • Cookware: Depending on your cooking needs, pack a variety of pots, pans, and utensils. Opt for lightweight, durable cookware that is suitable for outdoor use.
  • Cooking utensils: Don’t forget to bring essential cooking utensils, such as a spatula, tongs, knife, cutting board, and can opener. These tools will make food preparation and cooking a breeze.
  • Dishes and silverware: Pack plates, bowls, cups, and utensils for serving and enjoying your meals. Choose durable, reusable options that are easy to clean.
  • Cooking fuel: If your camp stove requires fuel, make sure to pack enough for the duration of your trip. It’s also a good idea to have extra fuel as a backup.
  • Cooler: If your camping trip includes perishable food items, a cooler is essential for keeping them fresh. Opt for a cooler that is the appropriate size and has good insulation.
  • Food storage containers: Pack a few food storage containers to keep leftovers and store dry foods such as snacks or spices. These containers will help keep your campsite organized and protect your food from pests.
  • Fire-starting equipment: If you plan on cooking over an open fire, bring fire-starting equipment such as matches, a lighter, or a fire starter kit.

Before your camping trip, plan your meals and make a list of the ingredients and cooking equipment you’ll need. This will help you pack efficiently and ensure that you have all the necessary items for preparing your desired meals.

Remember to follow proper safety precautions when cooking at your campsite. Keep flammable objects away from the stove, never leave it unattended, and extinguish any fires completely before leaving the area.

With the right cooking equipment on hand, you’ll be able to create delicious meals outdoors and make lasting memories around the campfire during your weekend camping trip.

Hygiene and Personal Care Items

While camping is a great way to connect with nature, it’s important to maintain proper hygiene and personal care during your weekend trip. Packing the right hygiene and personal care items will ensure that you stay clean, comfortable, and refreshed. Here are some essentials to consider:

  • Biodegradable soap: Opt for biodegradable soap to minimize your impact on the environment. Use it for washing your hands, body, and dishes.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste: Don’t neglect your dental hygiene. Pack a compact toothbrush and a travel-sized tube of toothpaste.
  • Deodorant: Stay fresh throughout your camping trip with a travel-sized deodorant. Choose one that is suitable for outdoor activities and has a long-lasting effect.
  • Hand sanitizer: Keep your hands clean, especially when soap and water are not readily available. Pack a small bottle of hand sanitizer for convenience.
  • Towel: Bring a quick-drying microfiber towel for personal hygiene and drying off after swimming or showering.
  • Feminine hygiene products: If applicable, pack an adequate supply of feminine hygiene products to ensure your comfort and convenience.
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen regularly. Choose one with a high SPF rating and waterproof properties.
  • Insect repellent: Ward off pesky mosquitoes and other insects with a reliable insect repellent. Look for one that is effective against the local insect population.
  • Wet wipes: Pack a few packs of wet wipes for quick clean-ups and refreshing wipes when access to water is limited.
  • Trash bags: Properly dispose of waste by bringing along a few trash bags. This will help keep your campsite clean and minimize your environmental impact.

It’s important to note that some campsites have restrictions on the use of certain hygiene and personal care products, especially those that are not biodegradable. Familiarize yourself with the rules of your camping destination and choose eco-friendly options whenever possible.

Keeping hygiene and personal care in mind will ensure that you feel fresh and comfortable during your camping trip, allowing you to fully enjoy your time outdoors.

First Aid Kit and Medications

When you’re out in the wilderness, it’s crucial to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. Packing a well-stocked first aid kit and any necessary medications is essential for ensuring your safety and well-being during your weekend camping trip. Here’s what you should include:

  • Basic first aid supplies: Your first aid kit should contain essentials such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, and scissors.
  • Over-the-counter medications: Include common over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, antihistamines, anti-diarrheal medication, and any necessary allergy medications. Ensure that you pack enough for the duration of your trip.
  • Prescription medications: If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an adequate supply for the entire duration of your camping trip. Place them in a secure and labeled container.
  • Specific medical supplies: Consider any specific medical supplies you may need, such as an epinephrine auto-injector for allergies or inhalers for asthma.
  • Tweezers and tick remover: These tools can be handy for removing splinters, ticks, or other small objects from the skin.
  • Emergency contact information: Include a list of emergency contact numbers, as well as any pertinent medical information or allergies.

It’s important to familiarize yourself with the contents of your first aid kit and how to use them properly. Additionally, make sure to check the expiration dates on all medications and replace any that have expired.

In addition to the first aid kit, be aware of any specific medical concerns or conditions that may require additional precautions. If necessary, consult with your healthcare provider before your camping trip to address any concerns or obtain any specialized medical advice.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to health and safety. Stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, practice proper food handling and hygiene, and be mindful of your surroundings.

By packing a comprehensive first aid kit and any necessary medications, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared for any minor injuries or medical needs that may arise during your weekend camping trip.

Camping Essentials

When packing for a weekend camping trip, there are certain essentials that you should never leave behind. These items will ensure your safety, comfort, and overall enjoyment of the camping experience. Here are some camping essentials to include in your packing list:

  • Map and compass: Even if you’re familiar with the campsite, it’s always wise to bring a map and compass for navigation purposes. This will come in handy if you decide to explore the surrounding areas.
  • Water bottles or hydration bladder: Staying hydrated is crucial during outdoor activities. Carry reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder to ensure you have access to clean drinking water at all times.
  • Firestarter: If you plan to have a campfire, bring a reliable firestarter such as matches or a lighter. Additionally, learn and follow the proper fire safety guidelines of the campsite.
  • Multi-tool or pocket knife: A versatile tool can come in handy for various tasks such as cutting ropes, opening cans, or repairing gear. Pack a multi-tool or a pocket knife with essential functions.
  • Extra batteries or power bank: Ensure you have a reliable power source for any battery-powered devices such as flashlights, headlamps, or portable chargers. Pack extra batteries or a power bank to keep them running.
  • Trash bags: As responsible campers, it’s important to leave the campsite clean and free of waste. Pack a few sturdy trash bags for proper disposal of garbage.
  • Extra ropes and cords: It’s always handy to have some extra ropes and cords for various purposes, such as securing gear, setting up a clothesline, or creating a makeshift shelter.
  • Campsite furnishings: Consider items such as a camping table, camp chairs, and a camping lantern to enhance your comfort and convenience at the campsite.
  • Entertainment items: To pass the time and relax during downtime, bring along items like playing cards, a book, a musical instrument, or any other form of entertainment that you enjoy.

These camping essentials should be tailored to your specific needs and the activities you plan to engage in during your camping trip. Consider the duration of the trip, the size of your group, and the amenities provided at the campsite.

Before leaving for your camping trip, double-check your list to ensure that you have all the necessary camping essentials. It’s better to be prepared and have what you need than to find yourself without a crucial item in the middle of the wilderness.

By packing these essentials, you’ll be ready to tackle any adventure that comes your way during your weekend camping trip.

Entertainment and Recreation Items

While spending time in nature is rejuvenating in itself, it’s always great to have some entertainment and recreation items to enhance your camping experience. These items can add fun, relaxation, and enjoyment to your weekend camping trip. Here are some options to consider:

  • Outdoor games: Pack a frisbee, a football, a volleyball or any other outdoor games that you and your camping companions can enjoy during downtime.
  • Hiking gear: If your campsite offers hiking trails, make sure to pack hiking poles, a comfortable backpack, and sturdy shoes to explore the surrounding nature.
  • Fishing equipment: If you enjoy fishing, bring along your fishing rod, bait, and tackle for a relaxing time by the water. Check the local regulations and make sure you have the necessary fishing permits.
  • Binoculars: Capture the beauty of wildlife and scenic views by bringing a pair of binoculars. You never know what fascinating creatures or landscapes you may discover.
  • Camera or smartphone: Preserve the memories of your camping trip by bringing a camera or using your smartphone to capture stunning photos of the landscapes, wildlife, and your camping experience.
  • Books or e-reader: Unwind and escape into a book during moments of relaxation. Bring your favorite novels, magazines, or use an e-reader to have a variety of reading options.
  • Art supplies: If you enjoy expressing your creativity, bring along a sketchbook and pencils or a portable watercolor set to capture the scenery through art.
  • Musical instruments: If you’re musically inclined, bring along a portable instrument such as a guitar, harmonica, or ukulele to entertain yourself and others around the campfire.
  • Star chart or stargazing app: Don’t forget to look up at the night sky. Bring a star chart or use a stargazing app to identify constellations and enjoy the beauty of the cosmos.

These entertainment and recreation items can add a touch of fun and relaxation to your camping trip. Choose the ones that align with your interests and preferences, and consider the space limitations and weight restrictions of your camping gear.

Remember, while it’s important to bring entertainment items, also take the time to unplug and fully immerse yourself in nature. Find the perfect balance between engaging in recreational activities and simply enjoying the serenity of the great outdoors.

By including these items, you’ll have a well-rounded camping experience that keeps you entertained and connected with nature throughout your weekend getaway.

Miscellaneous Items

When it comes to packing for a weekend camping trip, there are always a few miscellaneous items that can come in handy or add extra convenience to your experience. Consider including these miscellaneous items to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping adventure:

  • Duct tape: This versatile item can be a lifesaver in many situations. Use it for quick repairs, securing gear, patching up your tent, or even for first aid purposes.
  • Extra batteries: It’s always a good idea to have extra batteries on hand for your flashlights, headlamps, or any other battery-powered devices you’ll be using.
  • Travel-size laundry detergent: If you plan on doing laundry during your camping trip, bring a small container of travel-size laundry detergent to wash your clothes.
  • Clothesline and clothespins: Set up a clothesline using a durable cord and clothespins to dry wet towels, swimsuits, or hand-washed clothing.
  • Ziplock bags: These are incredibly useful for storing leftovers, organizing small items, keeping things dry, or even for creating an impromptu waterproof phone pouch.
  • Camping permits or reservations: If required, make sure to bring along any necessary camping permits or reservation confirmations to avoid any issues with authorities or campsite staff.
  • Extra tent stakes and guylines: Having a few extra tent stakes and guylines can be a lifesaver if some get lost or damaged during setup or strong winds.
  • Notebook and pen: Keep a small notebook and pen handy for jotting down important information, making a camping journal, or leaving notes for fellow campers.
  • Portable camping shower: If your campsite doesn’t have shower facilities, consider a portable camping shower to keep fresh and clean during your outdoor adventure.
  • Campsite decorations: To add a touch of personality and make your campsite cozier, bring along items like string lights, flags, or small decorations.

While these miscellaneous items may not be essential for survival, they can certainly enhance your camping experience and offer added convenience. Customize your packing list based on your personal needs and preferences, and always consider the specific requirements and regulations of your camping destination.

By including these miscellaneous items, you’ll be well-prepared for any unexpected situations and be able to enjoy a comfortable and memorable weekend camping trip.

As you prepare for your upcoming weekend camping trip, taking the time to carefully pack the right gear and essentials will contribute to a successful and enjoyable outdoor adventure. By considering factors such as the type of camping, weather conditions, and activities you’ll be engaging in, you can ensure that you’re well-equipped and prepared for a fantastic experience in nature.

Choosing the right gear, including clothing, footwear, and camping equipment, will provide comfort, convenience, and safety throughout your trip. Don’t forget about essentials such as a well-stocked first aid kit, necessary medications, and personal care items to prioritize your well-being while on the camping grounds.

To maximize your enjoyment during downtime, bring along entertainment and recreation items that align with your preferences and interests. Whether it’s a good book, a musical instrument, or outdoor games, these items can add a touch of fun and relaxation to your camping experience.

Remember, responsible camping includes respecting the environment and leaving no trace behind. Properly dispose of waste, follow campground guidelines, and consider eco-friendly alternatives when possible, such as biodegradable soap and reusable items.

As you pack, keep in mind the unique characteristics of your destination and any specific regulations or recommendations. Research the campsite and understand any restrictions to ensure a smooth and compliant camping experience.

By incorporating these tips and packing suggestions, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on a memorable weekend camping trip. Immerse yourself in nature, disconnect from the daily grind, and create unforgettable memories while reconnecting with the great outdoors.

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

Updated On: December 21, 2022

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

things to do in moscow russia | russian market

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

moscow things to do | bolshoi theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

unique moscow things to do | graffiti

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

white rabbit moscow russia

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

adventure weekend trip

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow

Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read

adventure weekend trip

Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.

Exterior of St Basil's Cathedral at Red Square on a sunny autumn morning.

Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.

Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.

Zaryadye - a landscape and architectural park. Many people stroll over concrete walkways surrounding a rounded building in parkland.

Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.

The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.

A guide to shopping in Moscow

Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.

Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod  (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.

After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny  traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!

You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.

Young people sit on a bench looking at a large painting on the wall. It's by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov, called 'The appearance of Christ to the People' and is displayed in the Tretyakov gallery

Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots,   Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.

After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century;  New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions;  Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.

A blurred train travelling at speed through a station with a tiled wall and a station guide.

Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.

When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.

Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try  Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

One of my favorite places to spend time in South Florida is Wynwood . And while this neighborhood has gone through many different iterations over time, today, it is a must-visit spot for anybody new to the Miami scene. I remember the days when Wynwood hosted ArtWalk Fridays, where you could pop in and out of galleries, grab a free drink, and potentially find the next big artist to hang on your walls. While ArtWalk Fridays doesn’t exist today, a weekend marketplace in Wynwood, Florida, offers many of those things and more. With shopping, cocktails, food trucks, and art, check out The Wynwood Marketplace in Florida.
