Among all the acts of worship (furoo-e-deen), Hajj is the only worship, for which a complete surah (Surah Hajj) is revealed in the Holy Quran. Hajj is also mentioned in Surah Ale Imran and Surah Baqarah. Hajj is also the only worship, which, if started, must be completed and can not be left half-done.

Quran: "And the Hajj is incumbent upon mankind for the sake of Allah, for those who can afford to undertake journey to it; and whoever denies, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, independent of the worlds", Surah Ale Imran, (3:97).

Hadith 1: If Hajj becomes wajib on a person and it is not performed, then he/she will be raised as a Christian or Jew on the day of judgment.

Hadith 2: When a person, on whom Hajj becomes wajib, completes the Hajj properly, his/her sins are forgiven such as if he/she is a newly born person.

Hadith 3: When a person completes a Hajj properly, his/her every dua is accepted for four months.

Serabit el-Khadim | Temple of Hathor

Remains of Serabit el-Khadim temple

Location: South Sinai, Wadi Serabit, southeast of Abu Zenima, about 50 km inside the mountain

Importance of Sinai to Pharaohs

The Ancient Egyptian kings went to Sinai for gold, turquoise and copper and the remains of their mines can still be seen. Just before Abu Zenima, a turn off the main road leads past the manganese mines to Serabil El Khadim. There are some abandoned turquoise mines and ruins of a rock cut temple of the 12th dynasty dedicated to the goddess Hathor who was known locally as the mistress of the turquoise. Pharaohs of later dynasties erected many stelaes which are still at the site commemorating their mining expeditions to Sinai.

Meaning of Serabit el-Khadim

The temple of Serabit el-Khadim is one of the most important temples of ancient Egypt. Sarabit means standing stones or the tools made of stones or the pestles, while el-khadim, means the servant or the guard. The temple represents the largest and most important Egyptian temple in the Sinai Peninsula, and is the oldest example of partially carved Egyptian temples in the rock and the holiest of this temple is the largest of its kind among all left by ancient miners throughout Egypt.

Location of the temple

The temple is located at an altitude of about 850 meters above sea level in the southwest of Sinai peninsula, about 10 kilometres north of Wadi Maghara, and about 43 kilometres to the east of Abu Zenima.

Serabit Al-Khadem is known for :

1. The Temple of Hathor 2. The Turquoise Mines 3. The Sinai Alphabet

The turquoise mines in Sinai

It was built in an area particularly rich in turquoise, a semi-precious stone much in demand by the Ancient Egyptians but of which there is no trace today. Although the earliest evidence of mining dates to an early period, it was not until the Middle Kingdom, especially between 1790 and 1778 BC, that a permanent Egyptian presence was established there. The Pharaoh Senusert developed the site of an earlier rock-hewn shrine known as the Cave of Hathor in which the miners may have placed a statue of their patron goddess. A portico and open court were constructed in front of it to form a temple, from which position rocky trails lead to several small turquoise mines. Naturally there was a residential area for the priesthood, and some of the inscriptions leave no doubt that miners themselves sometimes served as volunteer priests. Expeditions set out from Egypt every three or four years -- annually in times of special need for the precious stone - under the command of important officials, some of whom claimed to be "an acquaintance of the king".

The Temple of Hathor

The miners mounted rocky trails where they left graffiti of boats and hieroglyphic inscriptions some of which refer to the goddess Hathor as "the lady of the turquoise". They worked each mine rapidly, and when the source was exhausted went in search of new veins, but not before first making offerings to their patron goddess whose temple was successively enlarged and adorned. During the 18th Dynasty, in about 1580 BC, the barracks were enlarged and the Temple of Hathor received attention from Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmose III. Its orientation was changed when another shrine, dedicated to Sopd, a god of the Eastern Desert, was added at its southern end. By this time the structure did not resemble a traditional Egyptian temple at all. Courts, pylons and some dozen chambers with roofs supported on pillars can be identified. This was a period of the greatest mining activity in Sinai, and because the Bedouins , who always resented the Egyptian presence, became more troublesome, a small Egyptian garrison was set up to keep watch over their movements. Why the local community should have attacked the miners is difficult to say; perhaps it was for no more than a meagre booty. Nevertheless armed pursuits were made, and records of Egyptian successes were frequently presented in triumphal reliefs inscribed on the rocks - possibly exaggerated portrayals of fairly inconsequential incidents.

The mines around Serabit Al-Khadem

The mines around Serabit Al-Khadem, along with the now destroyed mines of Wadi Maghera, represented Egypt 's main source of this popular stone, and mining was clearly an arduous task. The men had to crawl through narrow horizontal openings at ground level. The larger, grander mines could hold about 50 workers and in the hot months conditions were almost unbearable, as was described in a text dating from the 12th-Dynasty reign of Amenemhet III. One of his officials was almost in despair when he experienced a desert that " ...burned like summer, the mountain was on fire... ", but, he continued, he fortunately survived and recorded that his mission was successful. When Flinders Petrie studied the temple in 1905 he removed many of the smaller stelae and statues; deciding to leave only the larger stelae in situ.

Sinai alphabet

It was found by The British scientist Petri in 1905 12 inscriptions represent some tools of daily life previously unknown signs, some of which resemble hieroglyphs, and were dated to both Tuthmosis the Third and Hatshepsut. In the following years, more than one expedition worked in the area, where other inscriptions were found, bringing the total number to 25. it was a mysterious, a script that resembles hieroglyphics and appears to have evolved in Sinai. British archaeologist Flinders Petrie concluded that it was invented by a Semite who worked in the turquoise mines in about 1400 BC, using a linear script on the hieroglyphic model. His compatriot, the linguist Sir Alan Gardiner, noted the remarkable fact that at least six of the signs presented appearances that unmistakably corresponded to the meanings of letter-names belonging to the Hebrew and Greek alphabets. Even more convincing of cultural overlapping, one group of four letters -repeated several times - could read as Ba'alat or 'the mistress', the female Ba'al, the name inevitably given by Semites to the Egyptian goddess Hathor. This confirmed that the inventor was a Semite who actually worked in the turquoise mines.

The workers' houses

To the west of the temple located the workers' houses, which are circular in shape roughly constructed from the stones of the area. It found some tools of daily life. The English scientist Petri 1905 found 12 inscriptions with previously unknown signs, some of which resemble hieroglyphs, and were dated to both Tuthmosis the Third and Hatshepsut. In the following years, more than one expedition worked in the area, where other inscriptions were found, bringing the total number to 25. The researchers called these signs, the Sinai alphabet. It turned out that these marks are centered on ancient Egyptian marks, influenced by some Semitic writings as Sinai was a meeting point for those coming from Asia and it seems that some of the Semitic workers were coming to this area of Palestine for work or trade. It became clear after further studies that this writing is the origin of the Phoenician alphabet, which is the origin of the Greek alphabet

Temple description

The temple has three entrances to which the visitor arrives from three valleys. The main entrance included two paintings, one from the reign of King Ramesses the Second, and the other from the reign of King Nect. . Despite the fact that the name of Amenemhat I, the founder of the Twelfth Dynasty, precedes all the names of kings found in the ruins of Serabit al-Khadim, the work in Serabit al-Khadim, both for the extraction of minerals and the construction of the temple, did not begin before the reign of his son King Senusert I (1981 - 1875 BC). The temple covers an area of more than 2,800 square meters, the temple is about 80 meters long, and about 35 meters wide. The temple contains 387 inscriptions.

Egypt: The Temple and Mines at Serabit el-Khadim In the Sinai

The temple and mines at serabit el-khadim in the sinai, by jimmy dunn.

The road to Serabit el-Khadem. Things have not changed too much. These roads mostly exist due to local mining operations today.

While the Egyptians seem to have known, crossed and visited the Sinai even before the dynastic period, we have found little evidence of their building activities in the region. Of course, inhabitable areas are usually small, and scarce, and so have been inhabited and built upon continuously over the ages. It is probable that what was built has been built over many times. Today, wondering through the Sinai and viewing its unusual landscape, it is not difficult to imagine a land rich in minerals. Egyptians discovered its mineral wealth very early on, perhaps at the beginning of the dynastic period. Archaeologists have found that the very earliest known settlers in the Sinai, about 8,000 years ago, were miners. Drawn by the region's abundant copper and turquoise deposits, these groups slowly worked their way southward, hopping from one deposit to the next. By 3500 BC, the great turquoise veins of Serabit el-Khadim (Khadem) had been discovered.

The path leading up to Serabit el-Khadem from the valley below, where there is a small lodge

The ancient mining complex of Serabit el-Khadim lies on a small plateau north of modern Al-Tor . It is located about halfway down the western coast, around 40 kilometers due east of Abu Zanima, and about ten miles from Wadi Mughara. It was one of the most important sites for the Egyptians on the peninsula. Today, it is not difficult to reach the Serabit el-Khadim area, though the trip must be made by jeep. There are no paved roads to the base of the mountain. From a parking area, one takes a well marked path that has an elevation gain of over 2600 feet above sea level and is somewhat rigorous Although many of the region's pharaonic reliefs were destroyed by a British attempt to re-open the mines in the mid-nineteenth century, along the path to the temple are a number of engravings that were written by the ancient minors. Some of the most interesting portray the ships that would carry the turquoise to Egypt. There is also an excellent bas relief of King Sekhemkhet on the east face of the plateau, revealing him smiting Egypt's enemies. Other antiquities are found along the path, including ancient tunnels, miner's huts and stele.

The actual temple site at Serabit el-Khadem is mainly rubble, with a few standing stela and obelisks

Serabit el-Khadim, a large, systematic operation was set up that would flourish for thousands of years. It was important enough to the Egyptians that a number of policing actions and protective measures were taken to protect the mines throughout most of Egypt dynastic period To mine the turquoise, the Egyptians would hollow out large galleries in the mountains, carving at the entrance to each a representation of the reigning pharaoh who was the symbol of the authority of the Egyptian state over the mines. A huge quantity of turquoise over that period was mined, carried down the Wadi Matalla to a garrisoned port located at el-Markha (south of Abu Zenima), and loaded aboard ships bound for Egypt. The turquoise was then used both for jewelry and to make color pigments for painting.

The temple at Serabit el-Khadim, though really only scattered ruins, is one of the few phraonic monuments we know of in the Sinai. In 1905, Flinders Petrie investigated the site, and found the famous proto-Sinaitic script", which is believed to be an early precursor of the alphabet. This was a great motivation for them to learn the sound signs that phonetically articulated their names. These scripts were hieroglyphic signs used to write the names of the West Semitic names of the people who worked the mines, and keep account of their labors. They developed an Alef-Bet with which they could record their Proto-Canaanite language. The script they developed is called Proto-Sinaitric (First-Sinaitic) and the language was a Pan-Canaanite language often called Old Hebrew.

The Serabit El Khadim temple looks like a double series of steles leading to an underground chapel dedicated to the Hathor Goodness. Much of the temple's large number of sanctuaries and shrines were dedicated to Hathor, who among her many other attributes, was the patron goddess of copper and turquoise miners. It is the only temple we know of built outside mainland Egypt and mostly dedicated to Hathor. The earliest part of the main rock cut Hathor Temple, which has a front court and portico, dates to the 12th Dynasty The temple was probably founded by Amenemhet III , during a period of time when the mines were particularly active. The 12th Dynasty was a period of considerable mineral wealth for Egyptians and some of the finest jewelry from Egypt's past have been discovered in the tombs of 12th Dynasty women.

A number of scenes portray the role of Hathor in the transformation of the new king, upon ascending the throne, into the deified ruler of Egypt. One scene, for example, depicts Hathor suckling the pharaoh. Another scene from a stone tabled depicts Hathor offering the pharaoh the Ankh.

al khadim tours

This older part of the temple was enlarged upon and extended by none other than Queen Hatshepsut , along with Tuthmosis III and Amenhotep III during the New Kingdom. This was a restoration period for the mining operations after an apparent decline in the area during the Second Intermediate Period. These extensions are unusual for a temple in the manner in which they angled to the west off of the earlier structure.

On the north side of the of the temple is a shrine dedicated to the pharaohs who were deified in this region. On one wall of the shrine are numerous stele. A little to the south of the main temple >we also find a shrine dedicated to the god of the eastern desert, Sopdu, which is smaller than the northern shrine.

As a Tourist Destination

Serabit el-Khadim is not a particularly easy place to find or to reach. Indeed, one will probably not find it without the aid of a knowledgeable guide and then, some stemma is needed to reach the actual site of the temple. The local tribes are responsible for protecting the site from looting and are open to assisting tourists and hiring out as guides. Furthermore, a significant segment of the route leading to the area off of the western Sinai coastal highway is not paved. One must climb up a long series of steps to the top of a mountain and then trek back along mountain ridges. It takes about two hours for the average person to reach the temple. Bring lots of water, as there is none to be found along the route. As a pharaonic tourist attraction, Serabit el-Khadim is not nearly as spectacular as many of the Nile Valley sites, though the surrounding area is interesting. It should be considered more of a trek adventure than a pure pharaonic sightseeing tour.

Serabit El Khadem temple

Serabit El Khadem temple

Serabit El Khadem temple Egypt information, tours, prices and online booking

Serabit El Khadem temple stands on a massive rocky outcrop. It is in fact at an altitude of 850m above sea level in the highlands of Sinai. Roughly, it is 50km from the coastal town of Abu Zenima. It is not the easiest place for tourists to reach. Perhaps should be considered more of a trekking expedition than just a monument visit. But in fact the experience indeed is worth the muscle-ache endured afterwards. Yet, there is a recent increase of tourists to the site. This prompted the Egyptian Antiquities Organization to begin to restore the area. Moreover,  they constructed a tourist center and a less strenuous route. It is with a path and steps up the western side of the mountain.

Going to Serabit El Khadem temple through the “easy route” will give you the chance to enjoy the hospitality of the Bedouin. It will be in fact at Sheikh Barakat village. You will have the chance to set off at dawn to climb straight up the eastern side of the mountain. In fact, it will be with a guide from the village. The Bedouin tribes long known of its existence. Yet, the temple of Hathor at Serabit El Khadem first reported by Carsten Niebuhr’s campaign. In fact, it was in 1762. Several stelae contain 19th century graffiti left by early visitors to the site. The remains of the monument gained recognition when Sir WM Flinders Petrie published his excavations there. In fact, it was in “Researches in Sinai” in 1906.

More information about Serabit El Khadem temple:

The site later surveyed by R Starr from Harvard University in 1935. Excavations again undertaken by an Israeli team from 1968-78, though still unpublished. A more recent survey and reinterpretation published by Dominique Valbelle and Charles Bonnet and the SCA in 1996. In fact, Serabit El Khadem temple lies in a vast area of turquoise mines. They date back mostly from the Middle Kingdom. Moreover, it built by Semite laborers during Dynasty XII on the site. It is where a local deity, Soped, “Lord of Eastern Desert” or “Lord of the Foreign Lands” worshipped. Inscriptions in the temple date from Senwosret I of Dynasty XII. In fact, he established the first construction here, through to the reign of Ramses VI of Dynasty XX, after which time the temple abandoned.

From the beginning the temple had a dual purpose, both to honor the goddess Hathor. Last one acted as guide to the “Chancellors of the God” during their expeditions undertaken. It was to exploit the turquoise mines and also to praise the rulers who instigated the expeditions. The chapels built by successive rulers equally divided to celebrate the rites of both divine and royal cults. The archaeological site today bounded by the reconstructed original Middle Kingdom enclosure wall built by Senwosret I . The recent conservation work provided two paths for visitors. They follow the two ancient processional routes to the rock-cut shrines at the eastern end of the site.

Further information about the temple:

In fact, these routes lead to the sanctuaries of Hathor and Ptah. Moreover, they lined with many groups of commemorative stelae. It is in fact in various states of preservation. The ancient miners erected a great number of memorials. They carry the dates of the missions, number and job of each worker and the names of their chief. For this reason, Serabit El Khadem often called the Temple of the People. The two main axes of temple converge in a courtyard before the speos porticos. The original plan of the temple expanded and reconstructed by successive kings. That is why it is not easy to visualize the layout when you are there, especially as the remains very scattered. Furthermore, they ruined and the inscriptions and decoration of the temple are in poor condition.

Beginning at the northern part of the processional way the route consists mostly of the Middle Kingdom remains. Following this route, through the northern gate of Amenemhet II, recreating the original approach towards the speos, there are two “Chapels of the Kings”, built by Amenemhet III and Amenemhet II which contain remains of columns and decoration. A large stela stands in situ in front of the colonnade, surrounded by a stone pavement in which an offering table is embedded. The route then proceeds towards the Hathor speos before doubling back to the main entrance and into the second processional way through the main gate.

More details about Serabit El Khadem temple:

At the north of the main entrance there is a massive foundation of stonework. It is with a similar foundation to the south. In fact, it flanks the entrance which is reminiscent of the mounds of a pylon. This gate dates back to Senwosret I and Amenemhet II. Moreover, it opens into large courtyard of Senwosret I at the beginning of the processional way. Remains of foundations of walls for ten small rooms can seen following this route. In fact, it is before reaching a pylon about half way along. The rooms contain a wide variety of stelae, statue fragments. They also contain inscriptions mostly from New Kingdom constructions in the temple, first from the Tuthmoside then the Ramesside periods. The pylon gate built by Thutmose III and nearby there are several stelae with inscriptions which give the years of his reign.

In fact, there are also many references to Rameses II and other rulers. It is besides to their representatives, the mining expedition chiefs. The following areas are confusing because some of the inscriptions were originally Middle Kingdom. Yest, the rooms re-used during the New Kingdom. Moving eastwards the processional way opens out into chapels for the royal cults. In fact, it built by Amenemhet III and re-used by New Kingdom rulers. Petrie named the western chapel the Hathor Hanafiya and the eastern the Lesser Hanafiya. In fact, they contain New Kingdom reliefs interspersed with statue remains. It is from the Middle Kingdom in fact. This include the lower part of a seated statue of Senwosret III and several fallen Hathor heads. Furthermore, there are also basins and tanks for offerings.

Further details about Serabit El Khadem temple:

The outer areas of the sanctuary split into two separate approaches to the shrines of Hathor and Ptah. On the northern side of the Hathor courtyard is a “Temple of Millions of Years”. According to the SCA notice board, the temple erected by Rameses IV. The decoration depicts reliefs of Rameses IV before Amun, superimposed on an earlier scene. In fact, this room leads into the portico court before the “Cave of Hathor”. There, several stelae in this area moved away. It was to build the portico as sockets in the floor of the portico suggest an ancient building stage – this was the first speos or rock-cut chamber in the temple.

The Hathor speos hewn out of the rock during the reigns of Amenemhet III and IV. It is where the portico constructed later by Amenemhet IV. Extant scenes seem to depict offerings with texts listing the names of some of the expedition leaders. The speos or cave itself is in very poor condition and currently has metal girders to shore up the roof and walls. A very badly damaged pillar or rock-stela still stands erect. In fact, it has remains of a text dated to Year 3 of Amenemhet III. An offering table stands in front of this.

Much of the complex of the sanctuary of Ptah, to the south of the Cave of Hathor, reconstructed. It was during a later building phase in fact. Though it originally dates back to Amenemhet III and IV. The approach contains remains of a pair of sphinxes of Thutmose III . In fact, the Thutmoside kings replaced the Ptah sanctuary with a new chapel. The chapel dedicated to Hathor , Amun of Thebes and Soped. The interior of the Soped shrine has a niche in the rear wall. Nothing of the decoration completed by Ramses IV and VI can now seen there. However there are some interesting statue fragments and stelae stand outside the shrine.

In fact, the remote location of Serabit El Khadem temple is awe inspiring. Moreover, the views over the mountain and desert landscape are fabulous. Yet, there is still more to this site. On the long path down the western side of the mountain there is a cliff face. It called by the Bedouin, Rod El Air, on which carved and bruised depictions of boats and animals. It is along with texts dating from the Middle and New Kingdom.

Rory McIlroy to Rejoin PGA Tour Policy Board, per Report

The world No. 2 resigned his position as a player director on the board six months ago.

  • Author: Bob Harig

Six months after resigning his position as a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, Rory McIlroy is apparently set to rejoin the group, at the behest of former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson.

The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom reported Monday that Simpson is looking to resign his spot among the six player directors and has asked that McIlroy return to take his position.

The PGA Tour declined to comment on the report.

The Guardian cited sources in saying that McIlroy, No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking and a four-time major champion, would return to the board which would also include a position on the board of the newly-created PGA Tour Enterprises.

Such an appointment would need the approval of the 12 members of the PGA Tour Policy Board, which include player directors Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Jordan Spieth and Simpson. A PGA Tour official said that Simpson has not resigned his position.

Spieth replaced McIlroy on the board last fall after the Northern Irishman said he wanted to focus more of his efforts inside the ropes . When he arrives at the PGA Championship next month in Louisville, Ky., he will return to the place where he won his last major title 10 years ago.

McIlroy, who had been an outspoken critic of the LIV Golf League before softening in recent months , was among the top players who sought changes to the PGA Tour schedule that would enhance player benefits, such as the signature events.

“Rory’s resignation letter, which he sent to the full board, clearly stated that the difficult decision was made due to professional and personal commitments,” said Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, at the time of his resignation. “Given the extraordinary time and effort that Rory—and all his fellow player directors—have invested in this unprecedented, transformational period in our history, we certainly understand and respect his decision to step down in order to focus on his game and his family.”

A return to the board could signal McIlroy’s desires to see an end to the stalemate that has seen the PGA Tour and DP World Tour on opposite ends of a framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which backs LIV Golf.

McIlroy has met Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF, and while he said again last week that he has no plans to ever join LIV Golf, he has made it clear that he believes a deal is necessary.

“Fundamentally he wants to do the right thing,” McIlroy said of Al-Rumayyan last month at the Players Championship. “I think I've said this before, I have spent time with Yasir and his—the people that have represented him in LIV I think have done him a disservice ... so (LIV commissioner Greg) Norman and those guys.

“I see the two entities, and I think there's a big ... I actually think there's a really big disconnect between PIF and LIV. I think you got PIF over here and LIV are sort of over here doing their own thing. So the closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, I think that will be a really good thing.”

LIV Golf is in its third year and has signed several big-name players to lucrative guaranteed contracts, including three of the past six major champions—Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Cam Smith.

Asked how he viewed the distinction between LIV and the PIF, McIlroy said: “I think their disruptiveness and his—their disruptiveness, and then his ... I don't know what the right word is ... I guess his desire to be involved in the world of golf in a productive way.”

Since then, Al-Rumayyan met with Monahan and all of the player directors, including Woods, in the Bahamas .
