Alleppey Tourist Places

Places to visit in Alleppey: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Vembanad Lake, Mannarasala Temple, Ambalapuzha Temple, St. Andrew's Forane Church, Pathiramanal, Pandavan Rock,  Edathua Church, etc. There is a diversity among the many places to visit in Alleppey, from the rewarding sight of the sea to the wriggling inlets of backwaters and jungle streams- No wonder Alleppey was called the “Venice of the east” by Lord Curzon. The concept of houseboats which is locally called Kettuvallam in Malayalam is a primitive practice in Kerala.  Located around 53 kilometers from Cochin, the town is celebrated for its backwaters which connect Cochin and Kumarakom to the North. Besides backwaters and the sea, Alleppey is also famous for its ageless temples, serpentine canals draining into the ocean, colorful lagoons, rice paddies, and a 150-year old lighthouse.  While you are soaking up the laid-back coastal bliss, do try to visit the famous Andhakaranazhi Beach- the beauty gets amplified during sunset hours.  The floating ground to the crowd-pulling houseboats is none other than the longest lake in India- Vembanad lake. The tour of Vembanad lake is mostly coupled with Pallippuram island which is a picturesque petite land in the middle of the lake. Alleppey is just more than backwaters and the beaches, it has a history that is worth learning about. A trip to this coastal paradise is total bliss.

Pathiramanal

Pathiramanal

Pathiramanal, which means “Sands of the Night”, is a small lake island located on the backwaters of Alappuzha in Lake Vembanad. It is a bird watcher’s paradise since it is supposed to hold approximately 91 local species of birds and 50 species of migratory birds. The location of the island is extremely scenic, making it a lovely space to observe birds and the water. It is also completely uninhabited so you don’t have to worry about the crowd and hawkers disrupting the beauty. However, because it is uninhabited and not a major tourist hotspot, you will find that it lacks the usual facilities that bring tourists to comfort like benches in order to sit, restrooms, and places to buy food from. Let this not be a distraction since the island is very small and can be toured within an hour, which means that you won’t necessarily be inconvenienced by the lack of facilities, especially if you go prepared. The ride across Lake Vembanad is lovely as is the experience of walking through the island. If you happen to visit in the right season, you will find yourself surrounded by the chirpy sounds of thousands of birds. This certainly makes for one of the places to visit in Alleppey. Location:  Alappuzha. Timings: 6 AM to 6 PM Entry fee: None. You May Also Like:  Alleppey Tour Packages From Bangalore

Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race

Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race

Held in the memory of Jawaharlal Nehru, this boat race is unlike any other boat racing activity you may have seen before. The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, also known as Vallam Kali, is an annual competition that takes place every August on a part of Lake Vembanad. It is one of the cultural highlights of the state, so plan your visit accordingly if it is your desire to see and experience this boat race.  Unlike other boat racing events which have teams of 5 to 10 rowing furiously in silent concentration, this boat race has teams of at least 100 people, usually fishermen, who row together as they sing at the top of their voice. It is a wonderful experience to simply see the boats row past as you stand on the banks of the lake. If you feel like exploring and being offbeat, you could actually scout for the perfect secluded spot to watch the race on the banks of the lake. Else, go for the tickets for the bamboo stands set up especially for the race. The race is called a snake boat race because of the shape of the boats- long and snake-like.  Location:  Punnamada Backwaters in Alappuzha. Entry fee:  None. Timings: August month of every year.

If you only have 24 hours in Alappuzha in Kerala, then don’t fret. There are plenty of places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day!

Although the backwaters of Alleppey are humungous, most tourists choose to explore the main canal areas and it’s also here where you should visit to make the most of your time.

The great thing about Alleppey is how diverse the area is. You’ll have historic temples, beautiful beaches, spectacular viewpoints, endless backwaters, delectable dishes, and swaying palm trees (and even palm wine!) to enjoy.

It’s easiest, in my opinion, to take a houseboat, canoe, or a shikara boat around the area so you can explore more. Although having a car is convenient, you’re in water country now.

So, here are all the beautiful places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day!

Heads up: my trip to Alleppey was sponsored by India Someday . Click here to read a review of their India trip planning service or my full itinerary here . As always, although I was a guest all opinions and photo are my own.

Top tips for visiting Kerala

  • I flew to Cochin Airport from Delhi via a 3-hour domestic Vistara flight for less than $50!  Skyscanner  is my go-to for checking cheap flight prices.
  • In Kerala the locals speak Malayalam, they even have their own songs and films that have been recorded in the language. As one of the most literate states, they speak excellent Hindi and English
  • Kerala is a politically appointed Communist state, so you’ll see lots of communist flags and artwork around the area.

The Communist club in Kochi

  • Getting around Kerala can be quite a minefield with public transport. But, there are buses and trains. I would personally recommend a hire car for your time here.
  • You’ll need travel insurance, I always choose  World Nomads  for their flexible policies.
  • I stayed connected with my Keepgo  WiFi Hotspot , these kept my mobile roaming charges capped! But, getting a SIM card in Delhi is also a great option that provides you with 1GB per day for 30 days.
  • In Kerala they use the rupee, I always found that State Bank of India (SBI) was the best as they take foreign cards as they don’t charge you extra for withdrawals.
  • Kerala is a little more conservative than its neighbour Goa, but not as conservative as Delhi, so make sure that you dress appropriately. But, it’s not uncommon for tourists to wear strappy tops, dresses that show your legs and shorts either.

Where is Alleppey / Alappuzha in Kerala?

Alappuzha is the current name for Alleppey in Kerala, just in case you’re confused. But, most people still call it Alleppey.

Alappuzha is around 60 kilometres on NH66 (2 hour drive) from Fort Kochi and 83 kilometres (3 hour drive) from Cochin International airport.

If you’re winding down towards Alleppey from Munnar, then it will take around 5 hours to drive as you’re covering a whopping 170 kilometres on the journey!

How to reach Alleppey in Kerala

There are plenty of ways to get around Kerala. If you plan on relying on public transport then buses and trains will become your best friends.

Personally, if you have the extra budget, I think it’s a lot easier to rent cars while you’re here in Kerala to head around to the different areas.

That way you don’t have the headache of navigating local buses and you can cover a lot more ground!

It’s good to note there are no direct ferries from Cochin to Alleppey

Buses to Alleppey

Buses will be your cheapest way to get from Fort Cochin to Alleppey if you’re heading from there.

You’ll need to get the Ferry to Ernakulam and from there, head to Ernakulam bus station. From here, you can get a bus straight to Alleppey.

The journey will take around 2-3 hours depending on ferry and bus timings and will cost around 150 rupees max!

Bus to Munnar

Trains to Alleppey

There are direct trains from Ernakulam to Alleppey. So, you will need to get on the ferry from Fort Cochin to Ernakulam and take a train from Ernakulam station. It will take around 1 hour to reach there.

You will need to register on the IRCTC website in order to book trains yourself in India. These will need to be at least a few days in advance of travel to guarantee seats and you may be put on a waiting list.

Alternatively, you can visit the train station for Taktal tickets (ones you can book at the counter) a day in advance of travel.

This will be from 10am – 12pm the day BEFORE you leave on the train. For on-the-day tickets I would recommend Cleartrip (but you do still need an IRCTC account to book).

If this is your first time booking trains in India, make sure you read my guide of helpful tips on how to travel in India by train!

Driving to Alleppey

The easiest way would be to have your own transport or hire a car or taxi to Alleppey. This will take around 2 hours to reach Cochin.

If you’re thinking of getting a private taxi from Cochin/Fort Kochi to Alleppey, I would recommend shopping around for a good deal. You’ll usually pay around 1600 – 1800 rupees ($25) for the journey.

You can always get dropped off in Alleppey to a boat cruise and then start your day off exploring from there! More details on how to get around Alleppey are below.

How to get around Alleppey and the backwaters in Kerala?

Most of the time, tourists visit Alleppey to explore the labyrinth of backwaters and see the way of life down here. So, you won’t need a car for this.

The best way to see and experience Alleppey is cruising down the backwaters on a boat, to see the local villages, temples, toddy shops, and more!

Alleppey House Boat

If there is a group of you, or you’re planning to spend a night here. You may want to consider hiring a houseboat.

These can range from budget to super luxury boats and usually have double rooms with comfy beds, bathrooms with a shower, a kitchen on board to prepare meals, and a deck area to lounge on and enjoy the views of Alappuzha.

The houseboats usually come in a package with a room for the night and include hot drinks, snacks, and meals.

Here are some options for your trip;

  • 7-hour cruise on a houseboat in Alleppey

Alleppey Shikara Boat

As I was travelling alone, India Someday booked me a night in a hotel in the backwaters themselves on Emerald Isle Heritage Villa! I mean, it doesn’t make much sense for me being on a boat alone haha!

But, I still wanted to have that amazing experience of cruising down the backwaters.

My homestay owner recommended I take a Shikara Boat as the main canals get super overcrowded with houseboats and a smaller boat meant we could cruise down lesser-known areas of the backwaters.

It ended up being an incredible experience that is a lot less money than a houseboat. We got to see some lesser-known areas here and avoid the congestion of the bigger boats in the main canal routes.

Public Ferries

If you’re on a budget, it is possible to travel like the locals do and catch the local ferries that travel around the backwaters.

These will make various stops on the water, but it will stop off at temples, restaurants, and even toddy shops!

Although you won’t be able to stop at your leisure and enjoy the privacy of the boat charter, the prices are next to nothing to travel this way and you’ll get a more local experience.

16 places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day

1. climb up alappuzha lighthouse.

If you want to get some great views of Alleppey, then your first stop should be the Alappuzha Lighthouse.

In the 18/19th century, Alleppey was one of the biggest trading ports in Kerala. The lighthouse then was built in 1862 as a navigational aid for those sailors bringing their boats into harbour.

Today, the Alappuzha Lighthouse is a major tourist attraction where you can climb up the spiral staircase and get fantastic 360-degree views of the whole area.

But, you have to work for those views by climbing up a lot of steps and then finishing off the journey with a climb up a dodgy step ladder.

Click here to read my complete guide on what to expect visiting the Alappuzha lighthouse!

Alappuzha Lighthouse Museum | Places to visit in Alleppey

I was able to climb up to the top at a quiet time of the day, but getting back down was a real challenge. The heat in October was stifling and people were queueing the whole way down the lighthouse. It was a sweatbox inside.

The ladder had little control over who was going up or down and so it caused a build-up. People were going a bit crazy in the heat and pushing etc.

I soon figured out that there is a discount on the entry price from 3-5 pm! So, if you don’t want to be part of the rush, I would go earlier or later than those times.

The Alappuzha ticket prices are 25 rupees for foreign tourists and 10 rupees for Indians. There is a fee of 25 rupees for a  camera. This includes a small museum about the lighthouse history.

The views from Alappuzha lighthouse

2. Watch the sunset from the shores of Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha beach is pretty clean by Indian standards, so I would highly recommend visiting while you’re in the area.

Although note that there will still be rubbish on the beach. Plus, cows which is also a cool sight.

Although, usually in the West we bring out towels and suncream to relax around 10 feet apart from another party for a sunbathe. Indian beaches are not like that at all.

Most of the time, you’ll see everyone crowded together standing on the shoreline, taking in the sunset or paddling in the waves that come crashing in.

There are also lifeguards who will constantly blow whistles at people taking any risks!

Alleppey Beach Kerala | Places to visit in Alleppey

So, if you want any chance of seeing the ocean, you’ll have to join the crowd.

Here, you can also see the remains on an old pier that used to be in Alleppey. But, by the looks it was destroyed decades ago.

There are some coconut stalls and drink stands in the area if you’re feeling thirsty.

Alappuzha Beach

3. Sip a coconut and scrape out the jelly!

One of my favourite things to do in South India is drink the fresh coconuts that grow in the area.

These are quite literally hacked from the palm trees and sold that day, so you’ll be getting it completely fresh with all the flavour intact. Such a blessing compared to the UK where we have to import them.

What I love doing after you’ve sucked all the coconut water out is passing the nut back to the seller so they can cut it in half. They also cut a little makeshift spoon out of the nutshell!

Then, you can use the spoon to scrape out all the fresh coconut jelly that’s inside it. It’s honestly the best and if you haven’t tried fresh coconut before, now is your chance.

Look out for coconut sellers in Alleppey on the roadside, in the backwaters, and on the beaches too! It’s the perfect refreshment on a hot day.

Things to do in Fort Kochi

4. Take a day ride on an Alleppey House Boat

Just because you’re travelling to Alleppey in one day, doesn’t mean you can’t hire a houseboat!

Many people decide to rent a private charter for the day so that they can cruise along the backwaters, have lunch on board and have a nap if they want to as well.

It’s really popular and some say a better option than staying overnight in a houseboat too (it’s crowded with geckos and other bugs).

You can spend a whole day cruising and stop off where you like if you want to stop at all. Make sure you let the tour company know where you would like to stop off before you go.

Just note that as the houseboats are big, you’re restricted to the main waterways which can get busy. If you want to go on a more off-the-beaten-track adventure, rent a Shikara boat like me (see below)!

5.  Explore the Kuttanad Backwaters

Did you know that the Alleppey backwaters spread over 300 sq km!! It’s a phenomenon and a way of life for most people.

You’ll see many houses on little islands around here where people need to ride a boat just to enter their house.

If you’re only here for one day, I would recommend concentrating on the Kuttanad Backwaters. This has lots of pretty palm trees either side, churches, temples, Toddy shops, and villages to look at while you explore.

If you’re not getting a private charter, this is also the perfect place to catch the local ferries too as there are more infrastructure and ferry stops.

6. Go temple hopping!

The South of India has a colourful history of colonisation and the legacy is a plethora of cultures and religions. Kerala is no exception to that.

If you’ve already been to Fort Kochi, you may have been temple-hopping already to places like the Santa Cruz Basilica.

Well, Alappuzha doesn’t have churches as grand as all that, but it does have quaint temples of worship tucked away in the backwaters.

You can visit synagogues, mosques, churches, and Hindu temples that go back centuries. On my stay at Emerald Isle Village, we made some stops at St Joseph’s Church near the Sunset Point at Vattakkayal.

We also made a stop at the ancient Hindu Madathil Bhagavathi temple, although I was not allowed to enter being a foreign tourist.

7. Ride in a traditional canoe

Before houseboats, engines, or even cars, the locals used to travel by traditional country canoe boats.

These country roads were used to transport people, rice, coconuts amongst other things and it takes you back to a different age. They are still used by many farmers today!

If you’re up for a wild ride and a bit more of a local adventure, you can row down the backwaters yourself in one of these canoes.

Some of them do have a motorised engine too if you weren’t up for a workout of your arms!

But, as this boat ride is a bit closer to the water it requires a bit of a balancing act. So, no sudden movements lol. I took one of these to be transported to my homestay and it was awesome but not entirely waterproof on the floor.

8. Stay on the backwaters at Emerald Isle Heritage villa

As I was alone, India Someday booked me into a heritage homestay on the backwaters!

At first, I was a little confused as I thought that everyone booked onto houseboats but I found that this particular homestay was indeed very special.

Plus, it didn’t make much sense for me to be alone on a boat in the middle of Alleppey haha.

If you are interested in staying the night, Emerald Isle Heritage Villa is a farmstay that is over 150 years old! I know as I saw the original deed carved into a banana leaf.

Click here to read my full review of Emerald Isle Villas

Emerald Isle Homestay | Where to stay in Alleppey

It’s located over the backwaters and has a few boutique rooms, a spice farm with hammocks, Ayurvedic spa, and a restaurant too.

As part of my stay, we organised some resort activities like taking a tour of the island by rickshaw where we explored the beautiful area, meeting locals in villages, and watching the days fishing catch!

They are also able to book a boat ride for you to explore the backwaters and I took a Shikara boat. This way, we were able to go inside the smaller canals and go a little off the beaten path.

As you’re tucked away, Emerald Isle will prepare meals for you throughout your stay.

The breakfast, lunch, and dinner had a great mix of Western and local options. I always go for local food when I can and the fish curries were out of this world.

I would highly recommend staying here to escape for awhile. Click here for Emerald Isle dates and rates!

9. Take a Shikara boat ride on the backwaters

If you wanted to go deep into the backwaters, I would opt for a smaller Shikara boat to take you around. The bigger houseboats are restricted to the main riverways.

It’s kind of like the canoe boats, but they are much bigger with a rooftop to keep you dry and a motor engine. It even had a sunbed so you could relax onboard too!

Alleppey Backwaters

The reason why I loved it so much is that we could veer off into the little canal routes.

We sailed under photogenic bridges, met the locals fishing, saw women washing their clothes, and actually got to see some of the real-life that goes on in Kerala.

We stopped off in Toddy shops and learned how Palm Wine was made and we could explore so much more this way.

I would highly recommend finding a Shikara boat tour if you want to really explore Alleppey and escape the masses of houseboats and tourists!

10. Enjoy some Ayurveda!

Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, discovered 3000 years ago and it would be crazy not to try out some of the local treatments while you’re here.

They are also a fraction of the price of Western spas and the West learned all they knew from India! So, go get ‘em.

My homestay at Emerald Isle provided some Ayurvedic massages and treatments in their spa and I enjoyed a full hour-long body massage.

My masseuse, as well as providing spa treatments, was a local chiropractor at a clinic in the area!

So, she asked me about any tension I was feeling. As a blogger, I do get pains in my shoulder and so she worked on that for me, easing out the knots! It was incredible and it did feel so much looser after.

As well as treatments in resorts, there are plenty of Ayruvedic centres where people check-in for a while for natural healing.

11. Tuck into a delectable Malayali lunch

The food in South India is some of the tastiest you’ll get in the whole country. That’s why they serve classics like Dosa, Idli, and Vada on the menus all over.

The fish here is the local specialty and you know you’re getting it fresh as it’s caught in the rivers and in the sea! So, unless you’re strictly vegetarian, a fish curry has to be on your list of foods to try!

A lot of the food that was cooked for me in my homestay was fish-based. Fried, grilled, or curried, it was absolutely delicious and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Emerald Isle Homestay Restaurant

But, if you are more inclined to eat vegetarian foods, India is perfect for that. As many Hindus refrain from eating meat, you’ll find that most curries and chutneys are veg and packed with flavour!

Although super touristy, a bucket list thing to do here is to eat curry on a banana leaf! It’s like a Thali and you can try a range of local dishes.

You usually buy the basic Thali which is veg and buy extra meat dishes if you fancy!

Kerala thali

12. Watch the locals toddy tapping

One of the things you have to try here in Alleppey is Toddy. It’s a type of wine that is sourced from Palm trees.

But before you do, you should definitely learn where it comes from and how the locals source it!

Toddy tapping has been a profession here for centuries and now boasts around 50,000 labourers in the trade. It’s also licensed by the government and so it’s completely above board, not like Moonshine.

Toddy tapping in Kerala

A toddy drawer will climb a palm tree and make a whole in the palm flower at the top of the tree. They will then attach a pot, to collect the sap from the palm tree.

The sap will naturally ferment with the yeast in the air and within a few hours, you’ll have sweet alcohol that is around 4-6%. It’s then ready to be sold off to Toddy shops, or used in the home to make bread!

There are many opportunities to see toddy tapping and even have a go yourself! Enquire about your houseboat or hotel for more information.

Toddy tapping Kerala

13. Or, try some palm wine for yourself in a Toddy Shop!

If you’re looking for where to sample some Toddy, then you only need to look on the backwaters. While on your tour, make sure you ask your guide to stop off at a Toddy shop.

You’ll often be floating down the river and see a shack with a sign saying ‘Toddy’ or a photo of a terracotta pot spilling out palm wine. That’s your cue.

Toddy in Kerala | Toddy Shop in Kerala

These aren’t the cleanest places or the fanciest, but they will be packed with local men who are playing cards, watching TV, or chatting after a hard day’s work.

On my visit, it was festival time, so there weren’t many open for business. But, luckily we found one that was open to trying some Toddy!

You must be careful with how much you consume as they often mix with local water. Plus, if you’re not used to drinking it, it can irritate your stomach.

However, it’s a must-try and was one of the highlights of my trip to Alleppey!

14. Go fishing with the locals

Fishing is a big part of the trade-in the area and you will see it everywhere you go. Boats out on the sea, men with their nets or fishing rods, or on a canoe boat. Everyone is trying to catch fish for their dinner!

As part of your tour, you can stop on your boat to see the fishermen reeling in their catch during the day, or the best time is at sunset once they’re on their way home.

On my rickshaw tour, we saw men laying a net in the backwaters in the Lilypads. Although it was mucky work, it paid off as they were able to catch quite a few big fish there.

The whole reason why settlers came to Kerala from foreign lands, to begin with was for the wealth of spices that were here to trade.

The Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British, all traded spices back home and with the world. Kerala is famous for it.

Today, a popular thing to do in Kerala is to visit one of the spice farms, gardens, or plantations in the area.

My homestay had its own farm which the owner’s family had owned for more than 150 years! They stored grain, coconuts, rice and also grew their own spices for dishes.

16. Watch the world go by in your hammock!

I really feel that Fort Kochi is for hopping around historical buildings, Munnar is for exploring the hilltops and Alleppey is the spot where you can chill out for a while.

Alappuzha has a completely different mood to the rest of Kerala. One where you escape the stresses of the modern world.

So, as well as all the places you can visit in Alleppey in 1 day, you can also use that 24 hours to chill out and relax.

Many houseboats give you the option to lie down and just sail, watching the world go by. Or, you can find a homestay that provides a place to completely relax and read a book.

Emerald Isle had a whole farm area where you could walk around a lake, see the spices and also relax in a hammock by the backwaters.

It was almost opposite Sunset Point, so you had a spectacular view from there. All I will say though is bring some bug spray, as lying still can make you a good target for mosquitos and other insects too!

Where are you headed next in Kerala?

So, that’s all the places you can visit in Alleppey in 1 day. But, there is so much more to Kerala than the backwaters.

I explored Kerala for a week and loved every minute of it! We explored Fort Kochi, Munnar, and Alleppey on my tour which gave a great mix of history, culture, viewpoints, and relaxation.

Or, you can see some of the ‘real’ Kerala by visiting the locals at Dhobi Khana laundry house or climb aboard the Chinese Fishing nets to help the fishermen to reel in the catch of the day.

It’s also a great place to watch a traditional Kathakali performance too.

The Perfect Alleppey Itinerary: Best Places To Visit In One Day

' src=

Last Updated on March 29, 2024

I had written an ode to Kerala’s backwaters in one of my earlier posts. Here I will share with you a detailed Alleppey itinerary for 2 days with best places to visit, tours and experiences to make the most of your short time.

Often touted as Venice of the East, Alleppey is known for the complex network of lagoons, lakes, and canals formed by the backwaters of Arabian Sea. Since time immemorial these waterways served as the economic backbone of the region, connecting Alleppey to other parts of Kerala and beyond.

In my Kerala itinerary I advised to drive to Alleppey from Kochi and spend one night there, before heading to Munnar . But you could also sail to Alleppey , stay for one night and return the next day.

If you are wondering, how could you possibly explore the best of Alleppey, the most famous destination of Kerala in just one or two days – you’re going to get that answer here.

Pin the image below to save the guide.

Alleppey is the most famous destination of Kerala, India. Known for its idyllic backwaters, it is often touted as "Venice of India". A Quick Outline

Alappuzha – A Brief Background

Alappuzha, often anglicized as Alleppey, is more than just a coastal town in southern Kerala. Located in its namesake district, it’s a melting pot of cultures, religions, and natural beauty. Nearly half of its population is Hindu, followed by Christians(26%) and Muslims(~24%), making it a glowing example of unity in diversity.

alleppey and nearby tourist places

What sets Alapuzha apart are its brackish lagoons and lakes that lie almost parallel to the western coast of Kerala. Alleppey and Kumarakom, located on opposite sides of Vembanad Lake , are the two tourist hotspots of Kerala. While you’d love to spend days experiencing the blissful life of Alleppey, a one-night stay is sufficient for highlights.

23 Amazing Things to Do in Alleppey in One Day

Think you can’t fit over 20 things to do in just one day in Alleppey ? Well, you might not be able to do them all, but you can see a lot while sailing in the backwaters of Vembanad Lake. Let’s assume you reach Alleppey by noon and go through the list one by one.

1. Stay in a Houseboat

Backwaters of Alleppey - the best of alleppey in one or two days

Check-in to your hotel, which in this case is also your vehicle for sightseeing. Yes, it is the famous Alleppey Houseboat.

One of the most iconic experiences you can have in Alleppey is staying in a houseboat. These floating hotels offer a unique blend of luxury and tradition, making for an unforgettable stay.

Where to Get Them

You can book a houseboat in several ways. Many tourists opt to go through their resort or hotel, which often have partnerships with reputable houseboat operators.

Alternatively, you can book directly through various online platforms or even walk up to the Alleppey jetty where you’ll find numerous operators ready to show you their boats.

The cost of a houseboat stay can vary widely depending on the level of luxury you’re looking for.

A basic one-bedroom boat can start at around ₹7,000 per night, while a high-end, luxury boat can cost upwards of ₹20,000. Most prices include meals, and some even offer additional activities like fishing or village tours.

Facts You Should Know

  • Booking in Advance : Especially during peak season, houseboats get booked quickly. It’s wise to book at least a month in advance.
  • Inclusions : Make sure to check what’s included in the price. Some operators include all meals and activities, while others might charge extra.
  • Safety : Ensure the boat you’re booking has proper safety measures in place, including life jackets and fire extinguishers.
  • Timings : Most houseboats start their journey in the afternoon and return the next morning, covering various points in between.

Alternatives to Houseboats

Inside our beautiful Lake-side cottage in Alleppey. There is a wooden bed with four poles, typical of Kerala-style, lamps and lovely aesthetics.

Alternatively you could stay in a lake-view cottage or homestay. But why would you do that when you have a floating house full of luxury? I’ll give you two reasons.

Anyway, you are not going to sail in the houseboat for all night. By law, they should be anchored by 5:30 pm. Stay in a lakeview cottage with all the luxurious amenities, infinity pools, gardens right at the banks of the lake or canals. Your one-night’s tariff is slashed by almost 30%.

While a homestay may not give you the pool and jacuzzi, it gives you rich cultural experience and home-cooked food.

The second reason is the ease of exploring the backwaters. Houseboats are large and it is difficult to maneuver through the labyrinth of canals paving their way through picturesque villages. So hire a shikara instead of houseboat for your backwater tour.

2. A 5-Hour Tour of the Backwaters

alleppey and nearby tourist places

How will you cover so many places in one day? A 5-hour backwater tour is the short answer to it. If you are short on time, you can take a 3-hour boat tour as well and after that go on a short drive.

You have many options for this tour.

First, you can arrange a private tour through the resort where you’re staying . This is an excellent choice for those looking for a more intimate experience. The tariff for a private tour generally starts at ₹3,000 for a couple and can go up depending on the amenities offered.

Your second option is to hop on one of the larger boats that carry 10-15 people. This is a more budget-friendly choice, with prices ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per person. These bigger boats offer a communal experience that’s great for meeting other travelers.

As for the routes, most tours start from the Alleppey jetty and can take you through a variety of scenic spots.

Popular routes include sailing through Kuttanad, known as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” and making a stop at Pathiramanal Island, a haven for birdwatchers.

Here’s everything else you can do besides relaxing and experiencing the sheet joy of being in the cradle of nature.

3. Photography at Vembanad Lake

alleppey and nearby tourist places

Vembanad Lake is the longest brackish water lake in India . The largest one is Chilika Lake in Odisha – the largest lagoon in the planet.

From kingfishers and egrets to cormorants and kites, the avian life here is rich and diverse.

Many houseboats and shikara operators offer binoculars and even have local guides who can help you identify the different species.

4. Fresh Seafood Lunch at a Village on the Backwaters

Karimeen Fry

One of the highlights of any backwaters tour in Alleppey is the lunch stop, usually at a quaint village along the route.

Most tours will dock at a village in Kuttanad .

Imagine feasting on dishes like Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated in spices and grilled in banana leaves) or Alleppey Fish Curry, all while taking in the scenic beauty around you.

Some operators even offer the option to dine at a local’s home, giving you a taste of authentic Keralan hospitality.

5. Explore Paddy Fields Below Sea-Level at Kuttanad

Tractor in the paddy fields of Kuttanad village of Alleppey

Kuttanad, often referred to as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” is a must-visit spot on your Alleppey backwaters tour. What makes this region truly unique is its paddy fields, which are situated below sea level.

It’s one of the few places in the world where farming is done up to 2 meters below sea level. The only other place where such farms exist is Netherlands , to the best of my knowledge.

As your boat glides through the backwaters, you’ll notice vast stretches of green paddy fields separated by narrow strips of land or waterways.

The intricate network of canals and waterways in Kuttanad is used for both irrigation and transportation, making it a fascinating example of how humans have adapted to their environment.

During your lunch stop or at designated points on your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to step off the boat and walk through these fields.

6. Triveni Floating Market in Kuttanad

Heard of the floating market of Bangkok? Well, the one in Kerala is no less bustling.

While on the boat, request your sailor to take you to the to Triveni floating market in Kutanad. This state-owned market operates entirely on the boats and is a vital supply chain for the remote areas of the islands.

It’s an experience that adds a layer of authenticity to your Alleppey trip, allowing you to engage with the local culture. You might also get products at cheaper rate here because of they are state-owned.

Most tourist boats don’t have this market on their standard itinerary. However, if you’re hiring a private tour, you can certainly request a stop at the Triveni Floating Market.

Details to Note

The market operates from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving you ample time to explore and shop.

7. Visit Pathiramanal Island

Birds sitting on the dried branches of the trees in the Vembanad lake. Bird-watching is one of the top things to do in Alleppey in one day

Next stop that’s included in all popular boat tours is the Pathiramanal Island.

Pathiramanal, which means “sands of the night,” is an uninhabited island that’s a lively sojourn of migratory birds all over the world.

Once you’re on the island, you can take a leisurely walk through the woods, try to identify the bird-species, or simply sit by the lake and enjoy the natural beauty around you.

Don’t forget to bring your camera ; the island is a photographer’s paradise.

The island is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. It’s advisable to visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the best bird-watching experience.

There’s no entry fee to visit Pathiramanal Island!

8. Visit Chavara Bhavan

Chavara Bhavan is another must-visit spot on your Alappuzha itinerary. This ancestral home of saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara is now a spiritual shrine for the people of Kerala.

Besides being a Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, he was a great social reformer who spearheaded numerous initiatives to make education universally accessible.

Located on the banks of the Pamba River, you can reach this place only by boat. The house is preserved as a museum where you can see ancient artifacts and scriptures.

The highlight is the 250-year-old “Beemapally Chandanakudam” , a lamp that has been burning continuously since its first lighting.

The place is open to visitors from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There’s no entry fee, but donations are accepted. It’s a peaceful and enriching experience that adds a spiritual dimension to your Alleppey tour.

9. Punnamada Lake

alleppey and nearby tourist places

One of the most scenic spots you’ll encounter on your 5-hour boat trip is Punnamada Lake. This expansive water body is famous for hosting the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, one of the most celebrated events in Kerala.

As you sail through, you’ll be captivated by the panoramic views of lush greenery and traditional Kerala houseboats. It’s also a great spot for photography, so make sure your camera is ready.

Most boat tours start or/and end from this point.

While the lake is open for exploration throughout the day, the best time to experience its beauty is during the early morning or late afternoon. There’s no additional fee for visiting the lake as it’s usually included in your boat tour package.

If you have another day in Alleppey, you can come here for Kayaking.

10. Alleppey Lighthouse Museum

View from the Alleppey Lighthouse

You private boat tour will probably end at your resort where you are staying. If not you can ask them to drop you at the Nehru Trophy finishing point. Most group tours have a drop-point here.

From this point, hire a tuktuk and head straight to the Alleppey Lighthouse which is just 10 minutes away.

The museum isn’t just about the lighthouse; it’s a tribute to the maritime history of the region. You can explore various exhibits that delve into the life and times of sailors, the evolution of lighthouses, and much more.

It offers a spectacular panoramic view from the top, so paying Rs. 20 extra for carrying the camera inside is worth it.

The museum is open every day from 9:00 am to 11:45 pm and then again from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. So, you might be pressed for time here after the afternoon boat tour.

The entry fee is Rs. 10 for Indians and Rs. 25 for foreigners. Camera charges are extra.

11. Vijaya Beach Park & Alleppey Beach

alleppey and nearby tourist places

After this you can walk to the Vijaya Beach Park and Alleppey Beach. Vijaya beach park is a beautified children’s park near the Alleppey Beach, making it a perfect family-spot.

The park features a wide range of amenities like boating, a toy train, and even a Japanese garden. It’s a great place for families, especially if you’re traveling with kids. The children can enjoy the play area while the adults can take a leisurely boat ride.

Watch the sunset, enjoy the activities and walk along the clean and lively Alleppey beach to end your day.

  • The park is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  • The entry fee is 5 INR for adults and 3 INR for children. Additional charges apply for boating and toy train rides.

12. Authentic Kerala Cuisine For Dinner

A table full of Keralite delicacies - rice, fish, curry, dal, vegetables, fruits , dessert

We end this wholesome day of our Alleppey 2-day itinerary with a sumptuous authentic Malayali cuisine for dinner.

As the day draws to a close, retire for a good night’s sleep. We still have the time to soak in the best of Alleppey on the day of our departure.

13. Watch Sunrise at the Vembanad Lake

Sunrise at the Vembanad lake and a solitary boatman out fishing in the backwaters of alleppey. This is the highlight on one day Alleppey itinerary

On my first trip to Alleppey, we were so tired after driving all the way from Bangalore that we slept at 9pm! And I woke up before sunrise to catch the early morning views. It was mesmerizing!

14. Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple

alleppey and nearby tourist places

Situated just a few kilometers from the main town of Alleppey in Mulakkal, the Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple is a revered sanctuary dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeshwari. The origin of this 500-year-old temple is wrapped in many legends.

The temple is particularly famous for the festival ”  Mullakkal Chirappu ” which happens between November to January. During this time, the temple becomes a hub of cultural activities, including classical dance performances and ritualistic ceremonies.

The month-long festival ends with a grand parade of caparisoned elephants in the last two days. Thousands of devotees and tourists come to witness this spectacle from all over Kerala and beyond.

This is typical of many temple-festivals of Kerala and a sight to witness.

15. Visit Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple

I didn’t know about it until I came across this lofty statue of Shiva on my way to the Marari beach. It’s a narrow road to drive to the beach, so finding a parking spot can be difficult. So park your car and walk to the beach after a trip to this temple.

Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple is a hidden gem located in Alappuzha district, Kerala. Built around 700 years ago by Villimangalam Swami, the temple is a sanctuary for two deities of Shiva—Vadakkanappan and Thekkanappan.

The biggest festival in this temple is “ Thiru Utsavam ” held in February every year. Like in Mulakkal, this 10-day festival is also celebrated with traditional music, dance, carnival and elephant parade.

16. Enjoy a coconut at Marari Beach

Marari beach is one of the best beaches in India for families

One of my favorite beaches in India, Marari Beach is named after Mararikulam, a local fishing village, and it retains much of its original character.

This picturesque beach is also a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles ! You could spend hours in this setting, but it’s time for departure, so sip on some coconut water while enjoying soaking some vitamin sea.

17. St. Andrew’s Basilica – A Pit Stop on Your Way to Kochi

If you’re driving back to Kochi , St. Andrew’s Basilica in Arthunkal is one last place to stop by. This basilica is not just a place of worship but a historical marvel.

Raised by the Portuguese missionaries in early16th century, the church was rebuilt in 1584 under the guidance of Jacomo Fenicio, an Italian Jesuit. It is renowned for its grand annual feast of St. Sebastian in January, attracting pilgrims all over the country.

The architecture of the basilica is a blend of Portuguese style and local elements. It was elevated to the status of a basilica on July 9, 2010, making it the first basilica in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alleppey.

The church faces west, offering a serene view of the long white-sand beach on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

Important Details to Note

  • Visiting Time : Open throughout the day, but it’s best to check the official website for any special timings or events.

Other Places to Visit in Alleppey if You Have One More Night

If you have just one more night at Alleppey, there’s so much more to see. For the day of departure, I’ve included a few spots that are conveniently on the same route at a short distance from each other.

18. St Mary’s Forane Church at Valiyapalli

alleppey and nearby tourist places

Dating back to the 16th century, St Mary’s Forane Church at Valiyapalli is one of the oldest churches in India. A pristine white monument by the lake, this is one of the most beautiful religious sites in Alleppey.

The church is renowned for its beautiful murals and sculptures, as well as its altar made of a single piece of wood. It’s not just a place of worship but also a work of art.

The church is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

19. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Drive to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the second day. Kumarakom is rapidly gaining popularity as an offbeat alternative to Alleppey on the other side of Vembanad Lake.

Developed initially as a rubber plantation by Englishman George Alfred Baker, the sanctuary was formerly known as Baker’s Estate.

Now managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, the sanctuary spans 14 acres on the southern bank of the Meenachil River.

20. Kayaking In Backwaters

alleppey and nearby tourist places

Kayaking tours can be booked at multiple locations in Alleppey, including popular resorts and specialized tour operators near the backwaters. Some of the well-known spots are near Punnamada Lake and the starting points of houseboat cruises. You can also find options online or through travel agencies.

No prior kayaking experience is required for most tours. Beginners are usually given a brief training session before heading out on the water. However, if you’re looking for something more challenging, there are advanced routes available for experienced kayakers.

Safety is a priority on these tours. All participants are provided with life jackets, and guides often carry first-aid kits. The kayaks used are generally stable and designed for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Some tours even have a support boat that follows the kayakers to ensure safety.

More in the Kerala Backwaters

Alleppey is a place to relax and go back to simpler times. While you can see a lot in one backwater tour in one day, it’s also one of the best places for slow travel.

If you have a longer time in this region, you can save money by adopting the fascinating local lifestyle. Use the public boats, rent a bike to travel around, go for grocery shopping and cook your own meals. Tempting, isn’t it?

Here are my top picks for things to do in Alleppey on a longer trip.

21. Take a Public Ferry to Kollam

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to explore the backwaters, consider taking a public ferry from Alleppey to Kollam.

The journey takes around 8 hours and offers a different perspective of the backwaters. It’s a local experience, complete with stops at small villages along the way.

The ferry usually departs from the Alleppey Boat Jetty and tickets can be purchased on-site.

22. Village Tour of Champakulam

Champakulam is a quaint village situated on the banks of the Pamba River.

It’s famous for its annual snake boat race and the St. Mary’s Forane Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in India.

The village is accessible by boat and road, and a tour here offers a glimpse into the traditional crafts of boat building and idol making.

23. Trek to Pandavan Rock

For those looking to add a bit of adventure to their trip, a trek to Pandavan Rock is a great option.

Located near Urukunnu, this rock is believed to have been a hiding place for the Pandavas during their exile.

The trek is moderate and takes about an hour to reach the top, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Best time to visit Alleppey

alleppey and nearby tourist places

I recommend visiting Alleppey in the period between November and February. In fact, Alleppey is one of the best places to visit in India in winter .

The temperature of this typically Hot and Humid (with a capital “H”) area is slightly cooler during the time making it ideal for exploring. Also, this is the peak time for bird-watching in the Vembanad Lake. Migratory birds from around the world throng into coastal India for a little warmth. The lake also features seasonal blossoms that add an extra layer of beauty.

However, if you’re keen on experiencing the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, an annual cultural event that turns the peaceful backwaters into a competitive racetrack, you’ll want to plan your visit for August.

Where To Stay in Alleppey?

I have shared with you the tips for the best type of accommodation in Alleppey. Depending on the budget and experience you want to have you can choose between houseboats, luxurious resorts by the backwaters, cozy homestays hosted by locals and even beachside shacks.

Why Not Houseboat

Bed inside a houseboat in Kerala backwaters

☑️Romantic Stay ☑️Houseboat

One of the best options for houseboat stay that includes excellent food onboard and backwater tour.

Lemon Tree Vembanad Resort

☑️Jacuzzi ☑️ Affordable Luxury

alleppey and nearby tourist places

It isn;t rated well on Booking.com but it is one of my favorite stays. And the rating is high on all other hotel booking sites and rightly so. I don’t think you can find premium rooms right next to the Vembanad lake, with jacuzzi in room at such cheap rates anywhere else. Food here is average.

🌟 Marari Beach Resort, CGH Earth 🌟

☑️Yoga and Wellness ☑️ Fantastic Location

Located near Marari beach, this travel sustainable property offers yoga lessons, luxurious spa and the best facilities among all properties of Alleppey. This is perfect for a family vacation.

How To Reach Alleppey?

alleppey and nearby tourist places

Getting to Alleppey is relatively straightforward, with multiple options available. I drove from Bangalore, and the journey was a breeze, taking around 9 hours via the NH 44 and NH 66. This is one of the best routes for scenic road trips from Bangalore.

However, if you’re coming from Kochi, be prepared for some traffic delays, especially during peak hours. Kochi is a bustling cosmopolitan city, and the traffic situation can be challenging.

Kochi is the nearest city to Alleppey and serves as a major gateway for travelers. It’s well-connected by air, with the Cochin International Airport offering flights from various domestic and international locations. The city is also accessible by train, with the Ernakulam Junction being the closest major railway station.

If you’re coming from nearby cities like Trivandrum, Madurai, or Coimbatore, there are daily buses that run to Kochi. From Kochi, Alleppey is just a short drive away, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.
