Ultimate Guide to Kilimanjaro Safaris (Animal Kingdom)

If you love animals, you are going to love the Disney Animal Kingdom Safari ride.   Kilimanjaro Safaris magically takes you on what feels like a real African Safari in this amazing experience.

Kilimanjaro Safaris allows guests to explore the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in an open air vehicle.  Disney’s wildlife reserve is 110 acres with over 30 species of real animals.  You’ll drive through wide-open plains, forests, and wetlands.

Each ride vehicle has an expert guide, who shares tons of interesting facts about the creatures you are seeing.   The bumpy ride is about 20 minutes long, making it the longest ride in the Disney parks.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is a very engaging ride as you never know what animals you’ll get to see up close and what they will be doing as you pass by.

Disney provides salt licks along the path to attract animals to points where you can see them.  You’ll also pass by watering hole areas as well as great views of a lot of animals on the African savanna.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the closest thing to a real African safari.  We’ve ridden this ride many MANY times and it’s always different.

Different cast member tour guides share different bits of information, the animals are always on the move, so sometimes you get a great view of an animal up close, sometimes there’s new baby animals to see, and sometimes you get to see your favorite animal eat lunch, etc.

Regardless, you can count on getting a unique experience every time you ride!

When Should you Ride Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris?

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the main attraction of the Africa section at Animal Kingdom, so the lines can get long at times.

The best time to ride, in my opinion is late morning or late afternoon.

Kilimanjaro Safaris entrance

It’s a bit tricky because the safari doesn’t always open right away, so you can’t count on rope dropping this one first thing in the morning.

You also want to avoid riding it in the heat of the day because many times the animals are hidden because they are wanting to cool off.

The best thing to do is to get in line right before it opens (Which varies day to day) OR ride it around late afternoon when the lines have gotten shorter.

giraffe on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Many people leave this Disney park early to park hop to another one, which eases up some of those long lines!

Ideally, if you have Lightning Lanes, I would schedule a ride around 10:30 am as the lines are likely long, but the animals are active – you can skip that long line with your lightning lane passes.

If you don’t have that Lightning Lane access – save this ride for late afternoon.

What animals are on the safari ride at Animal Kingdom?

Here’s a list of the animals you will see on Kilimanjaro Safaris.

You’ll see:

  • African Wild Dogs
  • Ankole Cattle
  • Black Rhino
  • Common Eland
  • Hippopotamus
  • Nigerian Dwarf Goat
  • Nile Crocodiles
  • Pink-Backed Pelican
  • Saddle-Billed Stork
  • Scimitar Oryx
  • Spotted Hyena
  • White Rhinos

This list does change from time to time, but in general, you can expect to see a LOT of different animals on this amazing ride.

How bumpy is safari ride at Animal Kingdom?

The ride vehicles for Kilimanjaro Safaris are open-sided safari vehicles.  Your tour guide drives his/her big custom made safari truck over fairly rough terrain.

The safari driver does their best to avoid potholes, but the path is pretty rough and bumpy.

Disney advises that guests need to be in good health, no high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems.

They also say that expectant mothers should not ride as there can be unexpected jolts on the ride.

In addition, Disney warns that this could cause motion sickness.   For what it’s worth, my son and I are prone to motion sickness and neither one of us have ever had a problem on this ride.

Has the Animal Kingdom Safari Ride Changed over the years?

Kilimanjaro Safaris has definitely changed over the years.  If you remember riding it many years ago, you might remember a Poacher storyline.

Over time, Disney dropped that storyline in favor of not scaring child with imaginary poachers and instead, giving you more information about the amazing animals on this ride.

Introduction.

Feel transported halfway around the world to a 100-acre African savanna as you board Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safaris trucks. This 20+ minute attraction takes you on a tour of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve as you spot real African animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, gazelle, crocodiles, and more!

Kilimanjaro Safaris is located in the back of Africa, past the Dawa bar and Mombasa Marketplace.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Walking through the queue area you find yourself in the Harambe Reserve .

Soon you arrive at the boarding platform, enter your truck , and head into the animal reserve. Off you go down the bumpy dirt trail and into the reserve!

Your driver will point out the various wildlife for you. Not all the animals are visible all the time. There is a game spotting guide above your heads in the truck that can help you identify the animals you see.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

The first section of the reserve is called the Little Ituri Forest.  Bongos are often hiding around the first bend – look quickly or you might miss these shy creatures. Passing the local watering hole you might see the Black Rhino . On the right, the rare Okapi   which is an animal who appears to be wearing zebra pants, but he’s actually related to the giraffe.

As you continue, you’ll pass through a watering hole where Hippos may be at the base of cascading waterfalls, and you’ll cross a creaky bridge over a group of Nile Crocodiles .

The Vehicle emerges from thick vegetation into the vast savannah grasslands. In this area you might see Giraffes , Sable Antelope, Thompson’s Gazelles, Ankole-Watusi Cattle, Wildebeest, and more!  To the left, you’ll pass a rocky area where Hyenas or African Wild Dogs may be spotted. The land is very different here and is accented by termite mounds up to 20 feet high.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

On the left is a huge rock formation where a Mandrill Baboon family lives (they can be harder to see!).  The ancient baobab trees can be found in this area.

Around the next bend are the Elephants . Greater Flamingoes inhabit a tiny island that’s in the form of a “Hidden Mickey”.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

More watering holes, you might see the white rhinos wallowing in the mud. There are other hoofed animals: the kudu , scimitar-horned oryx and the long-horned eland along with sharp-eyed cheetahs up there among the rocks.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Coming around the next bend, your attention will quickly be drawn to the high rock formation on your left, where the King and Queen of the Savanaah reside…the  Lions!  Lions do spend the majority of their day sleeping; so don’t expect to see much movement.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Past the lion, you’ll see  warthog burrows (and possibly their residents!) to your left. Keep an eye out for the Ostriches as well!

This is when your safari comes to an end, as the vehicle rejoins the main roads and the Park Ranger Station comes into view.

To take a ride on Kilimanjaro Safaris, check out this AllEars TV Video:

RIDE LOGISTICS

Lightning Lane  access for  Kilimanjaro Safaris  is available  with the purchase of Genie+ . If you choose not to purchase Genie+, going first thing in the morning will likely provide you with a lower wait time.

Time:   The safari lasts 20-30 minutes. The drivers are not allowed to go off the track, so you could experience short delays as animals cross the safari trucks’ path.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Warnings:  For safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.

The ride vehicle is 8 feet off the ground enabling you to wind your way through the grasslands and waterways of the savanna. 32 passengers fit in this all-terrain truck with a driver for your guide. There is some padding on the seat bottoms and tops .

Taller or larger guests may find the seating cramped with confined leg room.

If you want a less bumpy ride, ask to sit in the front of the truck. The ride feels bumpiest in the back.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Accessibility:  Must transfer to wheelchair. Guests in wheelchairs should follow the signs to head to the special boarding area. You will need to either transfer from your wheelchair to a seat, or transfer to a standard wheelchair.

Video Captioning, Assistive Listening , and Language Translation Devices are available.

Due to the nature of the experience, those with service animals should check with a cast member at the attraction for boarding information.

The drivers are trained to spot the animals along the Safari and point them out to you. Photography, however, is a challenge — if possible the driver will briefly stop for your photo op.

If you have questions about the animals, ASK. Though there is an assigned script, every safari really is different depending on where the animals are and who your driver is.

In general, the best times to ride are morning or at sunset, when it’s cooler. The animals are often out in the rain as well.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

When Animal Kingdom is open after dark you can journey through the African savanna amid the “magically extended orange glow” of the setting sun. This is best seen at dusk. Once the sun sets, the savanna is dark, making it difficult to see animals.

REMAIN SEATED AT ALL TIMES!   Because the drivers are not allowed to stop on the ride path, the truck is always moving (the trucks are governed so the maximum speed is only 10 mph, though it feels faster). Animals can move in front of the vehicle at any time causing the driver to slam on the brakes and causing you to go flying. There are many mirrors on the trucks for the drivers, so just because you can’t see an animal doesn’t mean the driver can’t.

If you want to take good pictures sit on the end of the rows, you get better shots. You can also get better shots if you sit in the back row, where you can carefully turn around for photos.

The Mombasa Marketplace is located just before the main entrance of Kilimanjaro Safaris. Here you’ll find unique African goods, as well as Animal Kingdom and The Lion King specific merchandise.

INTERESTING FACTS

You won’t see any visible walls or fences here. Disney has done a remarkable job of hiding all the barriers that keep you and the animals safe.

When building the savanna, landscapers asked that the plants and trees be in place for two years before moving in the animals.

The details of the savanna were carefully crafted to give the illusion that it had “always been there”, right down to the ruts in the road that make the truck jolt and bump!

The hippos are actually the same ones you will sometimes see on the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail. The hippo barn resides in between Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and the savanna river.

The original version of Kilimanjaro Safaris included a heavy-handed anti-poaching storyline, but it was slowly faded out and by 2012 was gone completely.

Here are some animals you may see on Kilimanjaro Safaris:

Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris – The Ultimate Guide Updated

Sharing is caring!

Want to know more about the Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris?

One of the most immersive of all the Animal Kingdom rides, the Disney Kilimanjaro Safari takes you on a journey through the African planes.

In Orlando Florida.

This highly unique experience is one of the highlights of any trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It truly is an adventure that you cannot find anywhere else in North America.

Discover what you need to know about Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris so that you and your family can get the most out of this immersive attraction.

disneykilimanjarosafaris

Disney Kilimanjaro Safari Guide

The Disney Imagineers have successfully created the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in Animal Kingdom park.

Walt Disney himself always wanted to have live animals incorporated into his theme parks.

Whilst in Disneyland this dream was kind of realized in Jungle Cruise (Walt originally wanted real animals for this attraction), Disney’s Animal Kingdom finally achieved that dream.

The area where your Kilimanjaro Safari Bus will take you is vast.

110 acres of vast.

And it is home to 34 different species of animal including lions, hippos, giraffes, and elephants.

What is the Disney Kilimanjaro Safari Ride Like?

Kilimanjaro Safaris

The first experience of any Disney ride is the line area!

The advantage of the Kilimanjaro Safari Ride is that the queue is well-shaded.

There are some things to look at along the way, including some videos about conservation. But mostly the best thing about this line is that it is in the shade!

It can get very very hot in Orlando and it can be a challenge to wait in line at the height of the heat. There are a few spots where you can even sit down on a small wall which gives your feet a bit of a rest!

This is one reason not to ride Kilimanjaro Safari in the heat of the day – the queue will be a lot easier to deal with if it is a bit cooler.

A short way into the line you will have to put your stroller in the parking place.

A Cast Member will be there to guide you to the exact spot.

Then by the time you get back, your stroller will have moved of course!

Animal Kingdom

The Disney Animal Kingdom Safari ride vehicles are custom-built GMC and Ford trucks.

Lots of guests think that Kilimanjaro Safaris is on a track, but it isn’t. Those safari vehicles are true off-roaders controlled by the Cast Members!

Each ride vehicle holds up to 32 guests in 9 rows each seating up to 4. There is no height requirement for this Animal Kingdom ride.

It is very much for families, but as I discuss below, it is very bumpy.

Take notice of the warnings.

If you have a health condition or are pregnant give Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safaris a miss!

Passing Hippos

Is there a best place to sit on the Disney Kilimanjaro Safari ride?

There really aren’t any bad seats, but the best is the front and the back row.

However, be aware that the further towards the back you get, the bumpier the ride!

If you have small children they should not be at the edge.

Giraffe Models

In front of you, there are signs which help you recognize which animals you may see on your safari.

The most popular sitings are those of elephants, giraffes, gazelles, rhinos, crocodiles, hippos, and lions.

Animal Kingdom Safari Overhead Sign

The safari guides always make sure that they keep you entertained as well as educated. And they will try their best to point out the sometimes very well camouflaged animals.

If you can be organized enough it is a great idea to take some High Powered Binoculars with you.

I went on the safari ride for years before I actually did this. It made a huge difference to what you can see.

There is usually plenty of time to take photos of the animals. Your Cast Member guide will do their best to point out the best photo ops.

Animal Kingdom Safari Ride Fun Facts

mufasa mufasa mufasa

Don’t worry. Of course, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has things well designed so that you are not going to get up close and personal with a lion. Big trenches separate humans from the dangerous animals.

Jurassic Park this is not.

Disney has some great tricks to keep the animals visible and happy.

Ever wonder why the lions are always sitting out on the rocks? Yes, they are mimicking what they do in the wild, but what most people don’t know about the rocks is that they are air-conditioned!

The lions originally came from a much cooler park in Oregon, so they needed a little help cooling down in the hot Florida sun. If it ever gets too cold, the rocks can be heated too!

Disney also knows how to get the animals as close as possible to you. How do they do this? The usual incentive for food and water.

They place food, watering holes, and salt licks close to the vehicle paths.

The emphasis is on safety both for humans and animals.

You might think you can reach out and touch that giraffe but there is a large system of trenches, bridges and fences on all the savannas to keep humans from the animals and to keep the animals from predators.

Many years ago there was a story about poachers with a graphic illustration of the fate of Little Red, a baby elephant. This storyline has not been seen for almost a decade as many considered it too upsetting for a Disney attraction.

Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris Best Time To Ride

Baby Rhinoceros on Kilimanjaro Safari - Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World

What is the best time to ride the Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris? This Animal Kingdom ride is popular. And popular means lines.

The best tactic for the best time to ride Disney Kilimanjaro’s Safari? Arrive early. I know that’s always the advice, but it works.

If you can arrive at the Animal Kingdom at rope drop and then go straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris you will most likely be beating the crowds. Even better is if you have Early Entry at 8 am. You can really get ahead of the crowds.

Kilimanjaro Giraffe

The attraction is right at the back of the park. If you plan to be there early look at a map of Animal Kingdom so you get your bearings as to where you are going.

There are plenty of signs in the park, but it is always good to have an overall view.

There is another great reason to ride Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safari as early as possible. The animals are much more active in the morning.

You are more likely to see a greater selection of active animals than in the afternoon when it is hotter.

 Kilimanjaro Safaris Wait Time

Maclean the African Elephant on Kilimanjaro Safari - Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World

The Disney Kilimanjaro Safari wait times will vary from anywhere between 10 minutes to 120 minutes, This depends on the time of day as well as whether it is peak season or not.

As we have said, the lowest wait time will be as soon as the park opens.

If you leave it until 11 am you are likely to hit the peak wait times of at least 70 to 90 minutes.

Really try and avoid that time of day as it is likely to be the worst.

Kilimanjaro Safari - Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World

If you don’t get to the attraction early in the day, the next best time to ride Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris is usually around 3 pm onwards.

A lot of people head for the attraction earlier in the day and have cleared that area by mid-afternoon.

The wait times for this Animal Kingdom attraction are somewhat better now that Disney’s Animal Kingdom has extended opening hours. It used to only ever be open 9 am until 5 pm.

Now the hours are often extended into the evening so this also gives a chance to experience the safari ride at night.

Kilimanjaro Safaris at Night

Welcome to Harambe Wildlife Reserve

Now the hours are often extended into the evening so this also gives a chance to experience the Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris at night.

This is a very different experience from touring during the day.

If possible you should try and ride once in the early morning and then go back late in the evening.

The least busy times will be just before the park closes.

Giraffes on Kilimanjaro Safari - Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World

Adapting the experience for nighttime was not an easy task. Disney had to spend more than a year preparing the animals and the environment for the nighttime Kilimanjaro Safaris.

They introduced some new animals, such as the nocturnal hyenas, to be better suited to the nighttime experience.

They also added a huge wall of graphic displays to enhance the Kilimanjaro Safaris at night. This is so that guests can actually have enough light to see the animals.

The graphics cleverly mimic a gradually setting sun over an extended period of time.

This is so that the animals can adjust to the environment and the guests can actually still see the animals which are up and about in the evening.

The Kilimanjaro Safaris at Night is definitely a different experience than during the day. Ideally, you should do both. If you have to choose just one though, I would say go in the morning. You are likely to see more active animals.

Disney Kilimanjaro Safaris For Pregnant Ladies

I visited Disney World many times while pregnant. It’s a very pregnant lady-friendly place!

However, there are some Disney World rides that recommend that if you are pregnant you should not ride.

Zebras

Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safari Ride very clearly states that pregnant ladies should not ride.

This is going to be very much an individual decision. There are some rides at Disney World where it is very obvious that a pregnant woman should not ride.

You probably aren’t going to want to sign up to ride Space Mountain, Expedition Everest, or Rock N Roller Coaster when you are pregnant.

That’s obvious.

But Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of those Disney World rides where you are thinking shall I or shan’t I?

African Elephants on Kilimanjaro Safari - Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World

My personal experience is that when I was pregnant with my youngest son I did go on the Kilimanjaro Safari Ride. After about 10 seconds I realized that for me, it was the wrong decision. Kilimanjaro Safari is bumpy!

I remember just wanting it to end almost as soon as it started.

I am fortunate and have experienced the Animal Kingdom Safari Ride many times. However, at that time I really wished I hadn’t. It’s fine normally to speed through the African planes in your safari vehicle over all the bumps, but when pregnant I just wanted to be somewhere else!

Will you be experiencing Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safaris on your next visit to the Animal Kingdom?

Africa at Animal Kingdom (Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King)

Animal Kingdom is the youngest park at Walt Disney World. It’s also one of the most unique thanks to its zoo-like atmosphere.

Even though there are a variety of animals to see, including giraffes, zebras, and elephants, it’s far different than a zoo.

Animal Kingdom is known for having some of the best park food on property, thrilling attractions, exciting tours, and much, much more.

As the biggest Disney World theme park, there’s  a lot  to see and do, so why not take a deep dive into each land?

Here we take a closer look into Africa , one of the most vibrant and entertaining lands at Animal Kingdom.

This land celebrates African culture, food, animals, and so much more. From unique merchandise, to phenomenal entertainment, to seeing animals on the savanna, Africa is one land that you certainly shouldn’t overlook.

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom

Jambo! If you are planning your day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, then you have to start with the parks main attraction, Kilimanjaro Safari! Animal Kingdom is often overlooked because people consider it to be basically like a zoo you would have back home. This is Disney. There is more than animals and wildlife, there is a story and you are part of it when you visit.

Let’s take a further look into the star of the show, Kilimanjaro Safari.

Kilimanjaro Safari is the focal point of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This attraction opened with the park in 1998. The story goes that the Harambe Wildlife Reserve was for game hunting but when conservation became a focus that all changed. The reserve transformed into a safe place for the animals and only photo tours were allowed.

What is Kilimanjaro Safari?

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 1

If you have ever dreamed of traveling the world to adventure in the great savannah of Africa, look no further! Kilimanjaro Safari takes you and your family, (no height restrictions!), through the various habitats in Animal Kingdom to see animals as they are in their day-to-day lives. Your tour guide Cast Member will fill you in on all of the different animals, fun facts about them, as well as the plant life within the habitats and their purpose to the animals.

What Animals can you Spot on the Kilimanjaro Safari?

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 2

Your tour guide will take you through 110 acres of land to see up to 34 different species of animals. Some of the animals seen are:

  • Greater Kudu
  • White-faced Tree Duck
  • Sable Antelope
  • Greater Flamingo
  • White-bearded Wildebeest
  • Pink-backed Pelican
  • Yellow-billed Stork
  • Ankole Cattle
  • Egyptian Goose
  • Scimitar–horned oryx
  • White Breasted Cormorant
  • Stanley Crane
  • Mhorr Gazelle
  • Saddle-billed Stork
  • Black Rhino
  • White Rhino
  • Hippopotamus
  • Nile Crocodile
  • Reticulated Giraffe
  • Masai Giraffe
  • Plains Zebra
  • Mountain Zebra
  • African Bush Elephant
  • African Wild Dog
  • Spotted Hyena
  • Nigerian Goat

These are just what we’ve seen, you could see someone different! Tell us in the comments who your favorite was!

Kilimanjaro Safari

Kilimanjaro Safari Fun Facts

Safari truck Kilimanjaro Safari

  • Kilimanjaro Safari is almost the same size as all of the Magic Kingdom at 110 acres.
  • Disney had to plant all the vegetation 18 months before they could even bring in the animals.
  • On the savannah, you will notice dozens of beautiful live oak trees. These were actually on the land prior to building the Animal Kingdom. They were so beautiful Disney dug them up and kept them safe while they built the attraction and then replanted to where we see them today.
  • Ever wonder how they get the animals back home at night? All the animals are trained to audio cues to come into their pens. This allows them to do routine medical checks among other things.
  • The tire tracks along the path that you drive along are actually carefully placed to keep show water from mingling with the animals drinking water.
  • Be on the lookout for hidden feeders the Imagineers placed through the ride. You can normally spot them by logs, rocks, or even up in some of the trees.
  • When you drive by the area of flamingos take a close look at the island they are on. It’s a giant hidden Mickey!

When is the Best Time to Ride Kilimanjaro Safari

This is an often debated subject amongst Disney fans and even with those who work on the attraction. Of course, you have to keep in mind that the animals run the show. Much like you may experience with your animals at home you never know what is going to happen or when that nap time is going to hit. Though I must say with my cats, that nap is pretty strong all day long. Consistently I find the best time is to go later in the day closer to sunset. Depending on the time of year this can be between 5 pm – 7 pm. I think this has a lot to do with the animals knowing that at sunset I normally get to end the work day and have some dinner. Of course with Animal Kingdom’s extended hours things have changed a lot. This, however, has been the time that we have seen the otherwise sleeping cats up and running around. I recommend trying to ride the safari more than once, if the lines are not too long.

History of Kilimanjaro Safari

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 3

While Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened in 1998, the idea for the Kilimanjaro Safari started back in 1964 with Walt Disney. After traveling through South America in the 1940s and seeing all of the exotic animals, he wanted to share the knowledge and thrill with the rest of the world.

Disney initially was trying to plan a mini safari or boat ride right in Adventureland in Disneyland. Mind you, Disneyland is smaller than the Magic Kingdom. Of course, Walt Disney had to compromise his vision because they didn’t have the space for such an attraction, (or the funds). That is how we ended up with the beloved Jungle Cruise, but that’s an article for another day!

Fast forward 40 years when an eccentric Disney Imagineer put forth the idea for a theme park designed all about animals and helped teach conservation. Initially the board of directors dismissed the idea stating that it would be boring. Imagineer Joe Rhode came back to the board to pitch the idea again, but this time, he brought a live tiger to walk behind their chairs!

They all agreed that animals were not boring and Animal Kingdom opened on Earth day in 1998.

A Park for the Animals

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 4

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is truly a place built for the animals as it was intended. Long before Disney’s other parks did away with straws you may have noticed how Animal Kingdom never had any. Or maybe you noticed that Animal Kingdom does not sell balloons. Or perhaps you wondered why Animal Kingdom is the only park to not have a nighttime spectacular with fireworks.

All of these things have the animals in common. The Imagineers thought through all of the details of the park so that the animals would live with minimal stress. Straws can cause major digestive trauma should an animal find one. Balloons and their metallic backing can not only be dangerous if swallowed, they can cause a great deal of stress on the animals. Fireworks are a no-brainer. We have all met those dogs that need sedation on the 4th of July to handle the fireworks. Now imagine lions, elephants, and rhinos panicking because they think their world is exploding. Just like Edna Mode said “no capes”, Animal Kingdom says, “no fireworks!”.

How big is Kilimanjaro Safari?

Remember how we said that Walt Disney originally wanted a similar attraction in Disneyland? Well, the Magic Kingdom sits on 107 acres of land and Kilimanjaro Safari in Animal Kingdom sits on a whopping 110 acres!

The area is so large because Disney is focused on the

conservation of animals, not simply our entertainment. Their belief is that Animal Kingdom is their home and we are just visitors. If a rhino sits down in the middle of the roadway on the safari, then settle in because you aren’t going anywhere until he decides to move.

How long is Kilimanjaro Safari?

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 5

You should expect for your safari to take around 20 minutes, though it can be more. Expect to stop a few times for the animals. Sometimes the giraffes like to cross the road or those pesky rhinos just want to be the center of attention.

PARENTS OF SMALL CHILDREN:

We know what you’re thinking, “20 minutes of sitting still, yeah, no way.” Don’t write off Kilimanjaro Safari just yet. We thought the same thing but were astounded each and every time our littles sat soaking up every minute of the safari!

Queue for Kilimanjaro Safari

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 6

Get ready to learn a few words in Swahili! This all outdoor queue helps jump us into the story that we are going onto a wildlife reserve in Africa. While it is outdoors the good news is it is all covered unless the line is so long it spills into a tree-covered shady area. Along the way, there will be a video playing and posters showing you new words in Swahili, including the names for the animals and how to say hello and goodbye.

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 7

Stroller Parking

Disney does an amazing job creating stroller parking near attractions for families. Kilimanjaro Safari stroller parking isn’t as user friendly at first. Ask a Cast Member to direct you to the stroller parking area when you arrive at the queue. It is wrapped around the backside.

Trust us, that’s a good thing! They have the strollers set for where you get off of the safari.

All About Kilimanjaro Safari Ride Vehicles

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 8

The Kilimanjaro Safari ride vehicles are custom-made for Disney. They are 1990-2002 GMC Topkicks and Ford Super Duty trucks customized to be able to handle the mud, water, sand, chains, and divots that the safari has. Each vehicle can take 32 guests at a time and the attraction operates at around 3,000 guests per hour.

Do you need a Lightning Lane for Kilimanjaro Safari?

Animal Kingdom is one of those parks that you don’t really need Genie+, unless of course it is a holiday or a holiday weekend. Animal Kingdom has the least amount of attractions to use Genie+ on, so it’s not as worthwhile as it is in places like Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios.

The other thing is that a lot of the rides in Animal Kingdom don’t really have long wait times. Expedition Everest usually hovers 30 minutes and Dinosaur is usually 20 minutes. The longest wait time that can use Lightning Lanes is always Na’vi River Journey, which often exceeds an  hour.

Kilimanjaro Safari wait times really depend on the day. A lot of people rope drop Avatar, making Kilimanjaro wait times low, and then in the afternoon it rises significantly around lunch because people are trying to get on before they park hop.

IF you do have Genie+ we recommend making Kilimanjaro Safari your 7:00 AM first Lightning Lane pick so you can get on bright and early!

Kilimanjaro Pro-Tips!

  • RISE AND SHINE! Rope Drop Animal Kingdom and hussle right onto Kilimanjaro Safari! You will likely walk right on and big bonus – Animals are more active in the morning! You will watch them enjoy breakfast, and possibly even hear the lion roar!
  • DO NOT RIDE IN THE AFTERNOON We see it every time we go to Disney’s Animal Kingdom – A huge line for the safari that is over an hour wait between 12:00 – 2:00 pm. Don’t do it. Not only did we share how you can get on this ride with minimal wait, but also, the animals won’t do much. Lunch time is like nap time to these guys. You don’t want to be disappointed waiting for over an hour to watch a few animals sleep when you can go early and watch the savannah come alive!
  • IT’S HOT We’re not sure if you knew, but it’s hot in Florida. It’s even hotter in Disney’s Animal Kingdom due to the foliage planted to maintain the heat and humidity levels. Here’s the thing – Just like you don’t like the heat, the animals don’t either. If it’s disgustingly hot where you’re miserable, the animals are likely feeling the same. We suggest saving the safari for another day.
  • PLAY IN THE RAIN! Don’t let a little rain scare you away. Some animals are a lot like little kids! They love to play in the rain and splash in the puddles. It’s adorable to see and definitely a special view of the safari! NOTE: We’re talking just some rain, not crazy monsoons or thunderstorms.
  • RIDE AT DUSK If you time everything just right you can experience a truly safari ride by riding at dusk. Many of the animals are nocturnal, so you see them far more active. We’re all about new and unique experiences! New challenge: See the safari at rope drop and compare it to safari at dusk. Let’s make it happen!
  • LAST RIDE TIMES Because the safari is filled with real animals who need real care, the Kilimanjaro Safari does not run all the way until park close. Be sure to check with a Cast Member when the last ride of the night will be if you are planning to try a ride at dusk. Typically, the last ride is around 5:00.
  • Kilimanjaro Safari is almost the same size as all of the Magic Kingdom at 110 acres to Magic Kingdom’s 107 acres.
  • Disney had to plant all the vegetation 18 months before they could even bring in the animals.
  • On the savannah, you will notice dozens of beautiful live oak trees. These were actually on the land prior to building the Animal Kingdom. They were so beautiful that Disney dug them up to keep them safe while they built the attraction and then replanted them to where we see them today.
  • Many people believed that all of the animals on the safari were actually Disney animatronics! That would be a lot of engineering work!
  • The animals may seem completely free roaming, but Disney has ensured guest’s safety with environmental barricades. There are moats, chains, and other features throughout the attraction to keep animals at bay and everyone and everything safe.
  • Why don’t the lions eat the other animals? Disney animals are fed on a regular schedule and that keeps their hunting instincts at bay. Lions in the wild typically only get a full meal every 3-4 days.
  • Guests can actually watch the animals receive vet care over at Rafiki’s Planet Watch! Just take the train near the exit of Kilimanjaro Safari.
  • More than 2,000 lbs. of elephant poop must be cleared off of the safari EACH DAY! There is no waste in Disney, that poop is then turned to fertilizer for the Disney Agricultural Program.
  • All bathrooms in the Africa area of Animal Kingdom have a large bolt lock on a steel door in the off chance of an animal being loose in the area. These are the only restrooms to lock in all of Disney property
  • The storyline has changed drastically on this attraction! Currently, you are in Africa about to embark on a special safari tour on a wildlife game preserve. When the attraction first opened, it was the same beginning, but quickly turned into a message about conservation and poaching when the safari vehicle stumbled upon a mutilated mother elephant missing her tusks. For good traumatic measure, her baby was there beside her trying to wake his mama. Yeah. That version only lasted a few months and it was changed. Conservation is still a strong message throughout all of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but they learned it did not need to be so literal.
  • To further the message of conservation and keeping animals in their habitats, no animals were brought in from the wild! All Disney animals were brought in from rescues and zoos around the United States. Disney’s Conservation Program has also successfully completed breeding programs for at-risk species.
  • You can take special private tours to get up close and personal with some of the savannah’s largest beasts like the Rhino and the Elephants. Check out these and more guided tours here in our article about affordable VIP Disney Experiences .

Behind the Scenes of Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom 9

I am a mother of three that has refused to grow up. Adulting is for the birds, so I go to Disney World every chance I get for that magical escape from reality. I believe that Haunted Mansion is the best ride in all of the Disney Parks, and I am fervently in team Happily Ever After for fireworks spectaculars, (sorry, not sorry, Enchanted). Finally, I hope I never grow tired of skipping down Main Street, USA, and my dream come true would be “friends with” the Fairy Godmother in my old age.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a fascinating combination of a zoo, amusement park, and museum all rolled into one. My favorite attraction at Animal Kingdom has always been Kilimanjaro Safari. You can ride it a hundred times and never have the exact same experience. Here are 10 awesome animals to see on Disney’s Animal Kingdom Safari. Can you spot them all on your next ride?

title graphic showing two rhinos and the words "10 awesome animals to see on Disney's Animal Kingdom safari"

On the Kilimanjaro Safari, guests board safari-style all-terrain vehicles and take a simulated trek through over 100 acres of Eastern Africa while never leaving Central Florida. Many great Savannah creatures roam through the fictional Harambe wildlife preserve, but the ones on this list are definitely the best ones to see!

Disney World now offers night safaris, so you can see different animals out during the day and night! So be sure to try both day and night safaris!

All of the pictures in this article are from my family’s many rides on Kilimanjaro Safari.

a bongo on Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

1.  Bongo

These beautiful animals are the largest of the African antelopes. They are sometimes referred to as the “Ghost of the Forest” because they move through their surroundings almost silently.

Many people in the western world weren’t able to view them until around 1960.

two white rhinos on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

2. White Rhino

One of the biggest animals to see on the safari is the white rhino. They are definitely a crowd favorite.

These guys look innocent enough, but they put on quite the show for us on one morning safari. We were lucky enough to be on the first truck out of the gate, and these rhinos were extremely active. They butted heads and horns for a few minutes to the delight (and fear) of the people on our truck.

Then suddenly, they decided that their breakfast was more interesting than sparring, and they walked away.

Nile crocodile on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

3.  Nile Crocodile

When you come up on these prehistoric predators, you can’t help but feel your skin crawl a little.

There’s a pretty large group on display in this area, so there are always plenty of different ones to see. It’s amazing how even when you are pretty close to them, they really blend into their surroundings.

okapi on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

If you’ve ever watched Disney’s The Lion Guard on Disney Junior, you might have heard of the okapi before.

These guys are solitary and extremely shy, so they are very elusive in the wild.

Most people think they are relatives of the zebra, but they are actually cousins of the giraffe.

Watusi cattle on Disney's Animal Kingdom safari

5. Watusi Cattle

These are my personal favorite because they aren’t your typical livestock.

A symbol of wealth among Rwandan tribes, they were traditionally sacred and only used for milk and status.

Blood circulates through their horns to be cooled, and then it returns back into the body to give them a built-in cooling mechanism.

You usually get a great view of these remarkable bovines.

an elephant on Disney's Animal Kingdoms Kilimanjaro Safari

6. African Elephants

Who doesn’t love elephants, especially baby elephants?!?! There’s always a herd around on the safari.

Disney is committed to elephant conservation. The Disney Conservation Fund has contributed over $1.2 million in funds for elephant protection world-wide.

a warthog on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

7.  Warthog

This is a pretty cool picture of a warthog relaxing in his burrow. You never know, this might be one of Pumbaa’s relatives!

While the warthogs are not always visible on the safari, if they are out, you will get a pretty good view of them.

a herd of giraffes on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

8.  Giraffes

Giraffes are the type of animals that could stop traffic anywhere. On the Harambe preserve, it happens so often that the staff refer to it as a “giraffe jam!” We have seen these several times! They aren’t shy about coming close and are in no hurry to clear the path.

This picture shows a group running away, which was quite a sight.

The giraffes can also be a bit pushy to the other animals. We have seen them kick at the Watusi cattle because they were relaxing in a place the giraffes didn’t like. One time, we saw one run an ostrich away from a tree.

hippo on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

9.  Hippos

I included this picture to show how interesting it is to see these animals in their simulated natural habitat. Below that water are a few hippos. The bird in the picture is standing on a hippo, not a rock.

Hippos, even though they look lazy and somewhat cute, are known to be ruthlessly aggressive and ill-tempered.

Imagine being on a real safari and wandering up on this watering hole. You would literally be on top of the hippos before you even knew they were there!

the butt of a lion on Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari

10.  Lions

Thankfully, the king and queen of the jungle are positioned a good, safe distance away so they don’t have access to your safari truck!

Just like Simba on Pride Rock, this lioness is perched on her throne area.

The lions can be a bit difficult to spot at times but sometimes you’re rewarded with a shot like this one. And if you are really lucky, you will catch the male lion roaring! That’s an awesome sight to see!

Most of us will never get the opportunity to take a real African safari. However, thanks to Disney World, we can get the same experience without ever leaving the United States. Kilimanjaro Safari allows you to ride across the savannah and view some of the most beautiful animals in the world.

How many of these 10 awesome animals to see on Disney’s Animal Kingdom Safari can you find on your next trek? Good luck!

My son and I read this post together the night before we went to Animal Kingdom. After we read it, he made it his mission to see all 10 animals listed in this post! We had an absolute blast on the Safari, and looking for certain animals made it even better! Pay close attention to Christy and Chris’ posts – they know what they are talking about when it comes to DISNEY!

Kilimanjaro Safaris Fun Facts

Did you know.

  • Guests can encounter more than 34 African animal species on Kilimanjaro Safaris, including antelopes, baboons, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, flamingos, gazelles, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, impalas, lions, ostriches, rhinos, warthogs, wild dogs, and zebras. Pictorial guides of each animals feature in each safari vehicle.
  • The fictitious African village, Harambe, where Kilimanjaro Safaris is located is a homage to real African villages that sit adjacent to vast preserves. Harambe is Swahili for “working together.”
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ savannah encompasses 110 acres, rendering this single attraction larger than the entire Magic Kingdom park, which only occupies 105 acres.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ savannah is called “Harambe Wildlife Reserve.”
  • As Kilimanjaro Safaris is located in a theme park, precautionary boundaries, including berms, moats, fences, wires, and chains, are overtly or covertly implanted throughout the savannah to keep the animals in their respective habitats.
  • Devices such as air conditioned rocks, cool breezes, salt licks, cooling or warming waters, and food help guid the animals towards the vehicle routes.
  • Guests experience Kilimanjaro Safaris in 10-ton, open-sided GMC trucks, with a camouflage exterior, and seats up to 32 passengers. Cast Members actually drive each vehicle and provide educational commentary throughout the safari.
  • The attraction’s plants are replaced each morning to compensate for vegetation consumed by the animals the previous day.
  • Guests can experience two related tours, Wild Africa Trek and “Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge,” for an additional cost. The latter experience begins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge , not the Animal Kingdom park.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ 1998 debut marked the realization of Walt Disney’s idea to utilize live animals in an adventure attraction. Disneyland ’s Jungle Cruise originally intended to fill this role in the late 1950s. Animatronic animals replaced the live animals in the version of Jungle Cruise guests enjoy today.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ development entailed much research. In 1990, Imagineer Joe Rhode ventured to Kenya and Tanzania to view animals and experience authentic East African safari tours.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris toned down and then eliminated an overt poaching plotline. First, during the Cast Member previews in 1998, complaints arose over the grotesque depiction of a fake elephant named “Big Red,” who was killed by poachers. Imagineers immediately wrote Big Red out of the attraction. The attraction debuted with a tamer plotline, where poachers kidnap an animatronic baby elephant called “Little Red” and, subsequently, get apprehended. Then, in 2007, this version was altered to limit the dialogue related to poaching between the safari driver and a naturalist named Ms. Jobson. In 2012, the entire poacher storyline, including the related props, were eliminated from the attraction. A zebra habitat replaced the space that the props originally took up. In early 2013 the addax antelope replaced the zebra in this space to allow for better viewing.
  • Save for a trial during the 1998 holiday season, Kilimanjaro Safaris ended its tours at sunset, regardless of park closing time, until 2016 because of lighting and animal sleeping issues. Beginning in the summer of 2016, with the debut of nighttime entertainment at the Animal Kingdom, Kilimanjaro Safaris will commence extended hours.

Five Things to Know About Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is an open-air safari through 110 acres called the Harambe Wildlife Preserve. Think of your trip as more of a photo safari during which you have an opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife roaming “freely” through forests, grasslands, and savannas.

The wonderful (and sometimes frustrating) aspect of Kilimanjaro Safaris is that no two journeys are alike. You may see a lot of animals, or sometimes only a few! Here are the five things to know before you head for the savannah.

(If you’re in a hurry and just want details like where it is and how long the ride lasts, click here to jump straight to the Nuts and Bolts section.)

1. It Really Looks Like a Safari

What I have learned from the animal world, and what anyone will learn who studies it, is a renewed sense of kinship with the earth and all its inhabitants. – Walt Disney

Long before the Animal Kingdom existed, Walt wanted to create a ride featuring live animals at Disneyland. He originally proposed the idea while Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise was being designed. The impracticality of using animals soon became apparent and was shelved in favor of using animatronics.

Later, Disney World would offer something Disneyland couldn’t. Walt said, “Here in Florida, we have something special we never enjoyed at Disneyland… the blessing of size. There’s enough land here to hold all the ideas and plans we can possibly imagine.” So, in a sense, Walt’s dream of a ride featuring live animals came true when Kilimanjaro Safaris opened with Animal Kingdom on April 22, 1998.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Animal Kingdom, headed by lead designer Joe Rohde, was revolutionary in that this park was alive – but it didn’t feel like a zoo. Incredible care was taken to ensure it looked like an actual African reserve. Equally important was that the animals be afforded an environment in which they could thrive. This attention to detail and respect for the animals that you see on Kilimanjaro Safaris is a big part of what makes this park different.

An overhead sign in the queue puts it best: “These lands preserve a portion of Africa’s vanishing wildlife. Please show respect to all animals you meet. Your care will ensure their survival. Asante Sana – Thank You.”

2. Looks are Deceiving

“You can’t just let nature run wild.” – Walt Disney

All the animals appear to be roaming freely. Which is true, to a degree. The Imagineers have strategically placed camouflaged barriers built into the savanna, woodland, and rocky hills. This is done to prevent predators like lions, or potentially dangerous animals like hippos, from wandering where they shouldn’t. (It keeps guests safe, too!)

But don’t worry – your ride experience will still be more than a tame drive through the woods. You’ll see a wide variety of landscapes and different terrains, all designed as homes for African animals. Since animal behavior is unpredictable, you never know which animals you’ll see on your safari. This makes it a different experience each time you take the journey!

Up Close with Rhinos Tour

For the list-makers, some of the 34 species roaming about include giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, elephants, antelope, impalas, gazelles, crocodiles, lions, rhinos, and cheetahs! Your guide will point out which animals are visible as you drive through and provide facts about them. Like the Jungle Cruise, this ride is different every time as your guide’s information is unique to your trip.

To maximize the number of species you may be able to spot on your safari, the Imagineers have taken a few steps to encourage them to appear. Water holes, forage areas, and salt licks are placed in spots that “tempt” animals to be in sight near your path when your safari truck passes along.

Bonus fact: the rocks in the preserve can provide the animals with air conditioning during extreme heat. They can also be heated when it gets colder than it should be for the animals.

3. It’s Real, Which Means It’s Not Perfect

“I don’t want the public to see the world they live in while they’re in the park. I want them to feel they’re in another world.” – Walt Disney

Kilimanjaro Safaris is intended to be as realistic as possible to an actual safari. The entire experience is designed to help you feel as if you’re on the real thing. Truth be told, it accomplishes this goal very nicely.

However, as a consequence of the devotion to making the experience as real as possible, the roads are bumpy! As you travel through the preserve, you can be guaranteed that you’ll hit some potholes and bumps in the path that will cause your safari truck to bounce and lurch around.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Bonus fact: The ride vehicles for Kilimanjaro Safaris are custom-built trucks. They aren’t attached to a track or predetermined route of any sort. Your guide is actually driving the truck over the rough terrain. They do their best to miss any really bad dips and divots in the road, but there’s only so much room to maneuver on the paths.

As you attempt to take photos, it’s important for you to know that the vehicle isn’t guaranteed to stop at any given location. Drivers will try to accommodate guests and stop the truck when animals are visible from the path, but be prepared to click your shutter without having time to frame the perfect shot. I have a whole roll of film (yeah, it was a while ago) of blurry images as we tried our best to take pictures of wildebeests or lions to no avail.

For the best possible pictures, sit toward the outside of the seats (and Cast Members will probably recommend that little ones be seated on the inside). Even though both sides offer views of the animals, the left side is considered the best by some.

4. The Queue is a Sharp Contrast

“Whenever I go on a ride, I’m always thinking of what’s wrong with the thing and how it can be improved.” – Walt Disney

I’m totally guessing that Walt would have suggestions to improve the queue area for Kilimanjaro Safaris. To be honest, there’s not a lot to see as you wait in what is a really long queue. At one point, you pass through the “booking office.” It made me think about the plethora of details in the Jungle Cruise queue area “office.” I wished that something with similar interest and fun had been done here at the very least.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

In the final stretch of your line, overhead screens show clips about the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Frankly, there’s not a lot else to see as you wait. And because it’s an open-air queue, it’s not all that comfortable on a hot, humid Florida day despite the overhead fans.

One improvement has been made to the attraction, at least in my opinion. The earliest script for the safari included a plotline about poachers. The experience could be a little intense – even a bit scary – at times. I remember in particular one part that involved crossing a rickety bridge that appeared to almost collapse while we were on it. Honestly, I didn’t mind when either of these parts of the story were removed.

5. The Nuts and Bolts

Kilimanjaro Safaris is located at the rear of the Africa section in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. The ride lasts 20 minutes, plus or minus. Bonus fact: It’s the longest ride in the parks that’s not a movie or show.

The safari trucks are open-air vehicles, providing you with the widest possible range of vision. Each can hold 35 guests with 3-5 guests in a row. As you might expect, the seats aren’t easy chairs and consist of a slightly padded bench with a back.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

To board, you have to take a small step up into the vehicle. There are no height restrictions for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Guests in an ECV must transfer to a standard wheelchair.

There are some significant health advisories for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Disney advises that for safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back, or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride. The reason for all of these is the previously discussed bumpy terrain.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of Animal Kingdom’s busiest attractions, along with Expedition Everest and the two Pandora attractions. Waits diminish in the late afternoon, sometimes as early as 3:30 p.m. The ride does operate when it’s raining, if possible, but it may close if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

To make the safari accessible to as many as possible, the following aids are available from Guest Services with a refundable deposit: Handheld Captioning , Video Captioning , Assistive Listening Devices, and Audio Description Devices .

Lastly, Lightning Lane via Genie+ is available.

The Bottom Line

Walt said, “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

We think the Imagineers totally succeeded here. Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World author, Bob Sehlinger, agrees, saying: “Having traveled in Kenya and Tanzania, I can tell you that Disney has done an amazing job of replicating the sub-Saharan east-African landscape. As on a real African safari, what animals you see, and how many, is pretty much a matter of luck. We’ve experienced Kilimanjaro Safaris more than 100 times and had a different experience on each trip.”

How many times have you taken the safari? Which animals were you most excited to see? Let us know in the comments below. Asante!

This will be my frist time on the safari at Disney world I’m so excited about the ride and I can’t wait to ride it and I love the African aminals because I’m part African

If you enjoy the Safari, I would also recommend doing the Wild Africa Trek to anyone that has a chance to do so! This experience was fantastic and goes into places that the Safari doesn’t and is a much more “up close and personal” tour of the area.

Disney Insider Tips

Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari Ride

One of the top 5 attractions in Animal Kingdom is Kilimanjaro Safari. This is an open-air safari that takes guests on a trip through the 110-acre Harambe Wildlife Reserve. What is amazing about the Animal Kingdom safari is that you get close to animals in their natural environment.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Kilimanjaro Safari

The Kilimanjaro Safari is a 20-minute ride in an open-air truck. The truck has bench seating and if you have a party of less than 5 you will all be able to sit together in one row.

The best seats are always the outside seats. Either side will provide a great view of the wildlife, but I always prefer to sit on the far left.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

The safari takes you on a ride through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. This part of Animal Kingdom is the largest in all of Disney World.

At 110 acres, it is larger than all of Magic Kingdom.

animals at kilimanjaro safari

Animals are sectioned off into different areas of the reserve and your Animal Kingdom Safari driver will explain different animals and their habitats as you approach them.

There is also a spotting guide posted at the front of the seating area.

The key about enjoying the Kilimanjaro safari ride is to have low expections.

Lioness on Safari at Animal Kingdom

You never know which animals you are going to see. Some animals might be hiding or sleeping during your time in the reserve.

See Elephants on Kilimanjaro Safari

The animals you will see are free roaming. This means they could be up close to your vehicle or farther away.

Seeing Giraffes Up Close on Kilimanjaro Safari

You may find that your vehicle even has to stop to let animals pass!

How to Avoid Lines for Kilimanjaro Safari

The lines for the ride can be ridiculously long. If you don’t want to wait in a long line, the best things to do are either ride it when you arrive at the park or get a Lightning Lane pass for it.

If you do have to stand in the line, it is covered and shaded with fans located sporadically.

When is Best time to Ride the Kilimanjaro Safari?

Each time you go on the Animal Kingdom Safari you can have a different experience. This is because animals have different eating and sleeping schedules throughout the day.

Some believe that best time to go on the Kilimanjaro Safari is first thing in the morning or before dusk. We have done the safari both morning and afternoon.

What I can tell you is that we saw animals up close both times, but often they were different animals.

Sleeping Lions on Safari

During the summer in the late afternoon, we saw an amazing amount of wildlife, but certain animals (like the lions) were in the shadier areas where they are not easily visible from the safari vehicle.

Semi Private Safari Tours in Animal Kingdom

If you want an even closer experience with the animals in Animal Kingdom, you can always pay for a semi-private tour. These are a few that you can choose from:

Wild Africa Trek Tour at Animal Kingdom

Wild Africa Trek Tour

If you are a big fan of Kilimanjaro Safari, you should consider the Wild Africa Trek Tour . On this private tour, you will embark on a guided expedition that takes you up close with exotic wildlife species.

This tour is only available to children 8 and older. You will get a private safari ride and photo CD.

Elephants on Safari in Animal Kingdom

Caring for Giants

During this 60-minute experience, get to meet with those who care for the African elephant herd. They’ll give you a glimpse into their day-to-day responsibilities as they provide fascinating facts about the elephants.

While you will not get to touch them, you will get closer to them than any other place in the park.

Rhinos in Kilimanjaro Safari

Up Close with Rhinos

On this hour-long guided adventure, the rhinos’ keepers will take you to see these massive creatures as few people ever do.

You will learn about the species’ behavior and biology and discuss the challenges that threaten populations of white Rhinos in the wild.

Have you been on Kilimanjaro Safari? What was your favorite part of the trip?

Located in Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Kilimanjaro Safaris is a safari in an African Savanna with dozens of animals to see and meet.

On this post

On this guided tour through the African savannah, you'll see a variety of free-living animals spread across the vast expanse.

The attraction opened in 1998 and has been running ever since.

There are more than 800km² filled with animal and plant nature throughout the land.

In this way, it works like a photographic safari, in which you have contact, albeit from afar, with the animals that live there.

Kilimanjaro Safaris - Safari at Animal Kingdom

The place, called the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, is home to more than 34 species.

There are 110 acres of land and breathtaking landscapes.

Recently, the adventure could also be done at night, after sunset, when you can see the behavior of the animals without being in the morning light. Isn't it amazing?

The Kilimanjaro Safaris tour

The vehicle you are going to ride will have an experienced guide, who will talk a little about the wildlife, as well as show you his knowledge of the animals that inhabit there.

The car is open on the sides, which makes it possible to have a very wide view of the animals.

More or less 30 people will be able to go at a time in each vehicle that is a kind of bus.

The journey lasts, on average, from 18 to 22 minutes, the difference is that vehicles may need to stop for an animal to cross the path and the driver has complete control over the car.

Even so, the whole adventure is made in a slow way, so that it is possible to take many pictures and enchant with the landscape.

Kilimanjaro Safaris - Safari at Animal Kingdom

That is, there is no need to be afraid, the animals are free, but there is no risk.

It is truly impressive how Disney has managed to reflect the animal life of the African continent inside a theme park.

That's why the park is so well-liked by visitors.

Some animals are very common to be seen on Kilimanjaro Safaris, such as: lions, giraffes, zebras, flamingos, wild boars, hippos, ostriches, rhinos, cheetahs, elephants, crocodiles and many others.

This attraction is highly recommended for children who like animals.

One of the most sought after animals during the tour is, without a doubt, the lion.

A big recommendation, if possible, make the tour have the highest chances of seeing most of the animals awake.

In addition, it is interesting that you arrive early and do the safari as soon as the park opens, as it is a popular attraction and always has moderate to long lines.

Of course, if that is your priority, as the park has more popular attractions than this one, such as the Flight of Passage Avatar and the Yeti roller coaster .

So don't leave this experience to the last minute.

Plan well to get the most out of it.

Recommendations for Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is for all ages with no minimum height requirement.

There is all necessary security, as well as accessibility for visitors.

The opening hours of the safari are from 8am to 7pm, when the night tour takes place.

To go to the attraction, just arrive at the park and go to the Africa area, which is on the left of the site, in the background.

Check out the Animal Kingdom map to locate.

Depending on the season, queues can exceed the wait of more than an hour.

Rhino at Kilimanjaro Safaris

That is, so that you can go to other attractions in the park – which are many! -, select a day that is not a public holiday and/or weekend as these are usually the busiest days.

In fact, Kilimanjaro Safaris is still one of the main attractions in the park, which is why so many people want to experience the adventure.

However, you can use the Genie+ , the Disney line-cutter, in this attraction.

With it you guarantee shorter times in the queue.

Animals Found On Kilimanjaro Safari

The amount and variety of Animals seen in this Safari is really impressive.

Naturally, it is not possible to easily see all the animals at all times, after all they are living beings, so they eat and sleep at different times of the day.

That said, as soon as you get into the attraction vehicle, you can see all the animals that are part of the ride on a “strip” that runs from the top of your vehicle. In the photo below you can see it well:

But since everything here on the blog is made to help you, dear travelers, here's a brief list of some of the animals you can find there!

  • White rhino
  • Black rhino
  • Hipoppotamus

Giraffe at Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom

The driver of your car is your guide and he will always talk about the animals that are in sight during your journey.

Of course, it is necessary to know how to speak English to understand the information given by the driver.

Is it worth doing the Kilimanjaro Safari?

Quite directly, yes!

It's one of the attractions we love to do at Animal Kingdom.

We know that many people have issues with animals in captivity as if it were a zoo, however, all Disney animals receive extreme care and many of them are rescue animals that cannot be released into the wild.

There's even a really cool series on Disney+ that shows how the vets and caregivers of these animals interact with them, her name is " Animal Kingdom Disney Magic “.

Elephant at Animal Kingdom Safari

It is an incredible attraction especially for those who love animals and for children.

Every time we do Kilimanjaro Safaris we see super happy and excited children throughout the journey seeing some animals they had never seen in person.

Of course, it's not every day that you have the opportunity to see animals so close up, the Giraffes for example sometimes stop in the middle of the way and you'll have to wait for them to leave to be able to pass and the car passes very close to them!

Technical information

Updates: Disney World Plans Destruction of Massive Theme Park

in Walt Disney World

An aerial shot of Disney's Animal Kingdom Park with art representing the expansion proposal.

Walt Disney World Resort recently dropped a bombshell on the future of one of its most visited and beloved theme parks.

Opened in 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park stands as one of Disney’s most ambitious projects, seamlessly blending the enchantment of a traditional theme park with the wonders of the animal kingdom. Spanning over 500 acres, this park offers visitors a truly immersive experience, allowing them to explore diverse ecosystems, encounter exotic wildlife, and embark on thrilling adventures unlike any other.

Crowds at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort

At the heart of Disney’s Animal Kingdom lies the iconic Tree of Life , a towering artificial tree adorned with intricate carvings depicting various animals. Surrounding this centerpiece are meticulously crafted themed lands, each offering its own unique attractions and experiences. From the African savannas of Kilimanjaro Safaris to t he mystical landscapes of Pandora – The World of Avatar , guests are transported to different corners of the globe and even beyond, all within the confines of this magical park.

The construction of Disney’s Animal Kingdom was a feat of engineering and imagination. Years of meticulous planning and design went into creating a Disney World park that not only entertains but also educates visitors about the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship. Immersive habitats were carefully crafted to provide a safe and comfortable home for the park’s animal residents, while state-of-the-art technology was employed to bring to life thrilling attractions such as Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage .

Tree of Life on Discovery Island at Walt Disney World Resort

However, just like we’ve always seen at Walt Disney World Resort, times change. Now, the Disney park, which has been open for almost three decades , will undergo significant changes.

How many attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be shutting down?

As you may know, Walt Disney World Resort has already teased major expansions coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the future. In preparation for these projects, Disney World filed a permit that will allow construction trailers to be set up behind Dinoland, U.S.A. In addition, we’ve already seen Primeval Whirl meet its permanent end.

Animal Kingdom Park entrance

So, what else is about to happen at the beloved Disney World theme park? Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro , who spoke at Destination D23, revealed that Disney was “Blue Skying” ideas that could include Encanto and Indiana Jones expansions to the area. In a follow-up interview with EW , D’Amaro broke down what this might look like.

“Animal Kingdom is about exploration and adventure,” D’Amaro said. “I was fortunate enough to have run that theme park, so I know how special it is, and I think there are a lot of stories that we can stay true to Animal Kingdom and express new properties in there, and that’s what you see us starting to do.”

While Disney has not confirmed the exact dates or what will take place when they do make these expansions happen, it seems almost abundantly clear that two more rides will be closing permanently when they are ready to move forward: DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin.

Guests ride DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom

With immersive storytelling, impressive animatronics, and heart-pounding encounters, DINOSAUR offers an adrenaline-fueled ride that leaves riders on the edge of their seats. On the other end of the spectrum, TriceraTop Spin provides a whimsical aerial tour aboard spinning dinosaur-themed vehicles. Ideal for families and younger guests, this attraction offers a playful yet thrilling experience as riders soar above Dinoland, taking in the sights and sounds of this imaginative land.

Just recently, X account @bioreconstruct shared an aerial photo of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in which we can see the amount of land that Walt Disney World Resort will have to work with when they do unveil the new expansions.

Dinoland USA is in foreground of this aerial overview of Animal Kingdom. pic.twitter.com/mPvKbLRwv7 — bioreconstruct (@bioreconstruct) April 8, 2024

While we await the fate of destruction and expansion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, August 9-11, 2024, looms large as major dates to keep in mind. The D23 Fan Expo takes place in Anaheim during this timeframe, and we expect to hear significant updates from Disney then.

In addition to this expansion, keep in mind that It’s Tough to be a Bug! is also on its way out at Animal Kingdom. The popular offering will be replaced by a Zootopia -themed attraction.

What other attractions are on their way out at Walt Disney World Resort?

As far as the rest of Walt Disney World Resort goes, there are numerous other projects on the horizon, as well.

Guests ride TRON

Other than the return of the Little Mermaid show this summer , there are no significant expansions for Disney’s Hollywood Studios on the horizon. At this time, EPCOT is also finishing up its construction– which has taken over the Disney theme park for more than the last half-decade– and will be opening up CommuniCore Hall & Plaza this summer.

At Magic Kingdom Park, Disney World guests are awaiting the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which is set to replace Splash Mountain this summer. Disney has also teased an expansion at Magic Kingdom- – titled Beyond Big Thunder Mountain– but no details have been given on its status.

What do you want to see at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the future? Let Inside the Magic know in the comments!

Introduction

A safari (Swahili: journey) in one of Africa's national parks is an exciting thing: many people can observe a larger number of wild animals and even have the oppurtunity to see the famous Big 5 of africa.

The focus is on the savannah and bush landscapes, where savannah elephants , lions , buffalos , and other well-known wild animals feel at home.

Whether it's Africa for the first time or safari connoisseurs, there should be something for everyone. And it attracts attention: There is no best destination in Africa, but there are the best destinations.

So, where should the next safari lead?

10th place: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Where else can wild animals be observed in front of one of the most famous mountains on earth? The Amboseli National Park at the foot of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania serves both as a postcard motif for Africa and as a photographic object. Giraffes, elephants and all sorts of other wild animals strut in front of the snow-covered summit of the "Kili" and give great photo motives.

Ancient elephants still live in the park. This allows visitors to observe the almost intact social behavior of the pachyderms in their herds.

The Kilimanjaro usually wraps itself in thick clouds during the day. The chances of seeing it are best in the morning and evening.

9th place: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

Number 9 on the top 10 safari parks in Africa is Addo. Known for, as the name suggests, its elephants, the Addo is more than a convenient destination near South Africa's Garden Route. The park is home to lions again after a resettlement program; black rhinos and leopards are also found here. Due to the extension to the south, the coast with its sharks and whales is also part of the park, which now advertises with the "Big 7".

In conclusion, the park is ideal for exploring with your own (rental) car. Please make sure to ask in advance what you have to consider for the self-drive safari.

In addition, holidaymakers in their cars should ensure they do not run over pill turners (African dung beetles), hundreds of which run across the roads depending on the weather.

8th Place: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namibia's most important park is home to countless wildlife, including the white and black rhino who are critically endangered, something you can read more about in one of our other articles about these ancient and disappearing creatures. There are also several predatory cat species and many antelopes. "Etosha" means "big white square," which describes the landscape well. The vegetation is extremely sparse; in the dry season, many animals gather at artificial waterholes.

In the dry season, many animals can easily be observed at the park water holes and camps. 114 different species of mammals live in the park.

Every coin has two sides: The park is completely fenced in and cuts the animals off their original routes in search of water in the Kuene region. The waterholes are not comparable to the actual environment and natural migration behavior for true lovers.

7th place: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

The Tarangire National Park is one of the most underestimated parts of the continent. Many visitors only make a short stop at the Serengeti or do not ebaobabven include the national park in their travel plans. But the park is home to large herds of elephants and many other species in a remarkable landscape of boabab trees.

The park is known for its elephant herds, which run through a prehistoric landscape along the Tarangire River.

The park is home to the tsetse fly, which transmits sleeping sickness. Visitors should urgently pay attention to consistent protection.

6th place: Chobe National Park, Botswana

"Land of the Giants" is written on the sign at the park entrance and already announces the park's main attraction: Elephants, one of the savannah's most social creatures . Between 80,000 and 100,000 pachyderms are estimated to live in the park and adjacent areas, where they migrate depending on the season.

Botswana pursues an exemplary animal and species conservation policy and no longer kills elephants if they become too numerous for the ecosystem. Instead, fences were dismantled to create more space for the animals. Kaffir buffalos and warthogs are also common. As a result, always check the weather forecast before you go.

A safari with the boat on the Chobe river belongs to the experiences, which holiday-makers surely do not forget so fast.

During the high season the Chobe River can be very narrow.

5th place: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

On the Luangwa River, the wilderness awaits: no fences, no radios to communicate with the rangers. Those who travel to the South Luangwa National Park will experience the bush unadorned, without much traffic and wild. It is not uncommon for your own jeep to be the only one at a spectacular sighting, giving visitors more time and peace to enjoy the encounter with the animals. Night safaris and bushwalks, i.e. safaris on foot, are allowed in the national park.

Pure wilderness. The park is known for its hippos and leopards . Many camps are not fenced and often wild animals run through the lodges. The park is also home to numerous endemic species and subspecies, i.e. animals that can only be found here. Sometimes you can even see the endangered Pangolins and the even more threatened Rhinos . Two species of Animals we explore in more detail in another article.

These include the Cookson gnu, the Crawshay zebra and the Thorneycroft giraffe.

The season plays an important role in the South Luangwa National Park. While in the dry season many large wild animals gather at the water and are so easy to discover, during the rainy season bird lovers get their money's worth.

4th place: Kruger National Park, South Africa

For most vacationers the Kruger National Park is the first safari experience in the African bush . It is one of the largest national parks on the continent and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. In contrast to the open savannahs in East Africa, the landscape is bushy and the animals are harder to spot.

This may be described as the best South African Safari.

In the Kruger National Park live some very rare animal species like wild dogs. Another animal worth further exploration in another one of our articles.

Animals in Vermont

The good infrastructure, the developed roads and the fences around the national park make it clear that the park is used and marketed commercially.

This partly causes a lot of traffic in the park and has at some corners only little to do with the real wilderness feeling.

3rd place: Ngorongoro Nature Reserve, Tanzania

While driving over the edge of the burglary crater into the nature reserve, visitors can rarely suppress the "wow" that involuntarily comes over their lips. The view can take your breath away. The safari through the crater, which has the highest predator density in Africa, becomes the photographic highlight of many Africa journeys.

The wildlife hike through Masai Mara and Serengeti also touches on the protection of the wildlife.

Overall, the high density of animals naturally attracts many visitors and some have the feeling of driving through an open-air zoo.

Some of the jeeps obstruct the way of the animals or hinder cats of prey during the hunt. Tell your driver that you don't approve of such behaviour.

2nd place: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Hardly any other national park in Africa is as famous as the Serengeti. This is of course due to the diverse fauna and one of the largest animal migrations in the world .

On the other hand, the Serengeti is almost always threatened: Many people have an interest in the place and in the fertile savannah, on which millions of wild animals cavort and planned large-scale projects would probably mean the end of the national park. The battle for the Serengeti has been fought for decades and culminated in the documentary "Serengeti must not die" by Michael Grzimek and his father Bernhard in the 1950s.

Really one of the Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa.

The migration of wild animals, where millions of wildebeests, zebras and antelopes travel in a large circle through the Serengeti and the adjoining Masai Mara in Kenya during the course of the year. This is known also as one of the great wilderbeast migration , a topic you can do further reading on with another one of our articles .

The Serengeti is exposed to constant threats. The plans to build a highway through the area are not over yet. There are also frequent conflicts between wildlife and humans.

In addition, organizations are now warning that too many tourists are coming to the park. It is best to drive in the low season and avoid facilities that require a lot of water (swimming pools etc.).

1st Place: Masai Mara Nature reserve, Kenya

Number one on the top 10 safari parks in africa list! When tears shoot into the eyes of the viewers of a lion documentary because the pictures are so overwhelming, the reportage is mostly shot in the Masai Mara (or Maasai Mara).

Wide landscape with green hills as far as the eye can see. The view is interrupted only by Wildebeest , zebras, giraffes, Elephants ,, antelopes , lions , hyenas… The Masai Mara could pass for an African cliché if it were not real.

Word has got around of course that the Masai Mara is a paradise on earth. It is therefore frequently overcrowded and the many cars already have influence on the behavior of the wild animals. Some cars leave the tracks in search of the best view. If this happens to you, it's best to tell the driver that you don't want them to.

The park also serves as a Rhino sanctuary and is home to some 60 white and black rhinos, who are guarded around the clock by armed rangers. An absolute must for rhino fans, who are almost guaranteed to meet some of the animals here.

The impressive Murchison waterfall, where the Victoria Nile plunges over 43 metres into the depths, is also a must see. The park is home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffes (also Uganda giraffe or Nubian giraffe). To the south of the park is the Budongo chimpanzee forest.

The park is in some places tsetse fly high area. Be sure to take care to protect yourself against insects.

When to go on a Safari

The best time is always present, but if you are looking for the most enjoyment from your trip, the best time to go is from July through October, when the animals are easy to find and in substantial numbers. However, deciding when to go on a safari depends on  what  country you want to visit and when you can plan your trip. As well as the type of wildlife you hope to encounter.

The best months for an African safari are therefore varied.

What to pack/ best luggage for African safari

Some of the most recommended basics:Here's the "must-haves" to  pack  for your  safari :

  • T-shirt, shirt or blouse – long sleeves and collars help to protect from the sun and mosquitoes
  • Fleece or warm jacket.
  • A pair of  safari  trousers – those that zip off at the knees are very handy, too.
  • Comfortable walking shoes (or boots) and socks.

Above and beyond the comfortable basics, there are niche items which could enhance your experience on safari. We've researched the best of these items to take with you.

Best insect repellent for African safari: Natrapel 8  Hour insect repthatellent: this is a CDC recommended product based on 20% Picaridin formula and is  DEET  FREE. It is safe to spray on your skin and clothing.

Best binoculars for African safari : Celestron 71347 Outland x | 10×25 |  Best compact Binoculars  for Travel.

Best camera for African safari : Best -buy cameras for  safari  in Africa: At Canon, it would be the Canon EOS Rebel series. Often you can get a kit ( camera  + lenses + accessories). Best for travelling and easy shots.

Best shoes for African safari :  light trail  shoes  and hybrid  shoe /sandals (Keen, Teva, Merrel, North Face, HiTec, Garmont, Salomon etc) are adequate for regular travel and normal  safari  conditions. Even fly-camping trips and walking trails on fairly rough terrain don't warrant hiking boots when conditions are dry.

It is important to find out what you need for specific areas as well as administrative documents and permits.

Summary on Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa

Frequently Asked Queastions (FAQs)

Safari experiences are generally safe, but it's important to follow guidelines and instructions provided by your guides or tour operators. Wildlife should be observed from a safe distance and never approached or provoked. It's also recommended to stay within designated areas and camps, especially during night hours. Adhering to these precautions ensures a safe and enjoyable safari experience.

Many safari operators and lodges prioritize sustainability and conservation efforts. They work to minimize the ecological impact by implementing responsible practices such as supporting local communities, conserving natural resources, and participating in wildlife conservation initiatives. When choosing a safari operator, it's advisable to opt for those with strong environmental ethics and credentials.

Interacting with or touching wildlife is strongly discouraged and, in most cases, prohibited during safaris. The well-being of the animals and the safety of visitors are of utmost importance. Safaris promote responsible wildlife viewing, which involves observing animals from a safe distance and respecting their natural behaviors. Touching or disturbing the wildlife can cause stress or potentially dangerous situations for both humans and animals.

Several ways to contribute to conservation efforts during a safari include supporting eco-friendly lodges or tour operators that actively participate in conservation initiatives. Additionally, you can choose to visit parks and reserves that allocate a portion of the entrance fees to conservation projects. What’s Next for Jane Goodall? An Immersive Spectacle in Tanzania.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream” is going up in East Africa, where visitors can experience the primatologist’s scientific breakthroughs (complete with termite mound).

Close up photo of the 90-year-old face of the primatologist Jane Goodall.

By Ralph Blumenthal

Are you ready for the Jane Goodall Experience?

It’s getting ready for you.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps,” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes “ left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”
