Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

I Just Went On A River Cruise — 8 Changes You Need To Know

are river cruises happening on the danube

  • Cruises and Sailing

  • River Cruises
  • Types of Travel

Each of us has a comfort zone for timing our return to international travel. When you are ready to set sail on a European river cruise, there are a few changes you should keep in mind. We anticipated many of the changes to cruising, a few were happy surprises.

I just returned from a Danube River cruise on Avalon Waterways. We explored the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Hungary aboard our floating hotel the Avalon Artistry II . We had a fabulous time while still adhering to appropriate health and safety practices that have become part of our daily life. There are several changes in the river cruise industry that you need to know before you hop on an international flight to sail on one of Europe’s beautiful rivers.

Avalon Artistry II, Danube River Cruise.

1. Cruise Lines Want You To Sail

The cruise lines are ready for guests. They want you to feel safe, enjoy your cruise, and spread the word that cruising is back.

The Avalon Artistry II can carry a maximum of 128 passengers in her 12 staterooms and 52 suites. Our sailing had 62 passengers which imparted a spacious, uncrowded feel. The staff is listed at 37 members, however, on our sailing, we had 41. Virtually two staff for every three guests. Needless to say, we were extremely well attended onboard. There was plenty of space to spread out and watch the gorgeous scenery as we floated along.

Tourism is down in Europe due to the perceived restrictive paperwork required and the only recently lifted travel restrictions. This is a plus for the travelers that visit. There are fewer crowds everywhere you go. The lines are shorter, restaurant service is quicker, and you don’t have to battle traditionally crowded attractions.

Suite view on the Avalon Artistry II, Danube River Cruise.

2. Sanitation Practices

Sanitation practices are the first big change you will encounter. While hotels and cruise ships strive to be squeaky clean, the emphasis on sanitation has brought clean to a new level.

According to Avalon Waterways Health and Safety statement, “We’ve instituted enhanced cleaning procedures throughout each ship … deep disinfection of each stateroom between cruises as well as dining areas between each meal service and the inspection and disinfection of all goods prior to loading on the ship. In addition… the air in our ships is not circulated between staterooms; only within an individual stateroom and mixed with clean, fresh, outside air.”

Every time housekeeping staff entered our suite, they opened the balcony door to let in fresh air, giving the room a refreshingly clean scent. I was comforted by their first-rate safety protocols.

cruise dining room.

3. River Cruises And Social Distancing

All common areas like the dining room, deck, and lounge had social distancing seating pre-set regularly. There was a large, organized group sailing together so they tended to sit without distancing. The crew reset the social distancing reminders regularly.

When we boarded buses for the excursions, many times there were empty rows between seats. However, on the smaller group excursions that required only a large van, we were not socially distanced and many riders chose to wear a mask on the buses.

4. COVID Testing

Most river cruise lines are requiring all passengers and staff to be fully vaccinated. This adds a level of comfort and security to your cruise vacation. They may also offer COVID testing at the end of your cruise if it is required to re-enter your home country.

Obviously, the goal is to avoid a positive test indicated by a pink line. I never thought in my 60s I would be worried about a little pink line again!

During my recent river cruise, I had three COVID tests. My grandbabies were sick with a cold before I left on vacation. As you can imagine, I became sick with their cold just as we landed in Prague. After the first night of coughing, I was terrified I was COVID positive and would pass it along to other guests. The next morning, I took one of the video-proctored tests I brought with me. Thankfully, it was negative. The following day I was still coughing — a lot! After speaking with our cruise director, it was decided the cruise line would test me once I embarked on the ship.

Typically, cruise guests have to wait to check in once they have embarked, however, they hustled us right to our room and administered a COVID test. Once again, the test was negative and we were allowed to enjoy our cruise.

Consider bringing a CDC-approved video-proctored test kit with you. Many cruise lines are offering to test U.S. passengers since they are required a negative test to fly back to the country. However, if they don’t offer testing, you will need to seek out a testing center at the airport or another local testing facility. It is much easier to have one of these kits that provide an emailed copy of your results.

You can take the test in the privacy of your room and most kits take about 15 minutes from start to finish. Be sure to choose one that is CDC-approved. City Health and many others offer a CDC-approved Rapid Antigen COVID test online.

5. Temperature Check

Every guest’s temperature was checked daily before entering the dining room at breakfast. A no-contact thermometer and required hand sanitization made the process quick and easy. We began each day with the comfort of knowing we were good to go.

6. Mask Requirements

Wearing masks on the ship was highly recommended in the common areas. That being said, after the first day, many guests chose not to wear their masks around the ship. The ship’s crew, however, always wore their masks.

Masks were required when entering the dining room and when serving yourself from the breakfast or luncheon buffet.

A KN95 mask from FFP Masks is a must-have in many European countries. At this time, travelers are allowed to be outside without a mask. Many museums and attractions, however, required the KN95 mask to enter. Packing a supply of these masks will keep you from scurrying to purchase one if you are declined entry.

7. Itineraries Need To Be Flexible

Everyone has certain excursions that are high on their to-do list. With unpredictable COVID outbreaks, passengers need to be accepting of flexible itineraries. Excursions may change and evolve while you are mid-cruise. Keeping an open mind regarding your itinerary will make your cruise more enjoyable.

Changes to the original plan may happen, but your ship’s staff is dedicated to your vacation enjoyment and will do their very best to ensure you have fabulous shore experiences.

Charles Bridge Prague.

8. Locator Forms And COVID Vaccination Attestations

Many countries are requiring visitors to complete a locator form or COVID attestation form. Your travel agent is the best resource for what forms need to be completed before your trip. Some Schengen Area Countries (European countries that have eliminated border patrols and checks for citizens and tourists) have similar travel requirements and restrictions, making it easy to move from one country to the next.

In our case, we needed to complete a locator form for the Czech Republic before we left home. It was a simple form. It was, however, in Czech and took a little effort to complete. The correctly completed form generates a QR Code that you need to carry with you during your visit. We were asked to produce it only once at the airport before our flight from Munich to Prague.

During our trip, Germany changed its travel requirements, and our travel agent and the ship’s cruise director informed us of the new COVID vaccination attestation requirement immediately. Again, it was a simple form to complete and we were able to print it out on the ship.

Many countries required us to show our vaccination cards when entering a hotel, restaurant, or pub. However, we were not asked to show our vaccination cards at other onshore activities.

Great River Cruising Deals

When you are ready to travel, and that time is unique to every individual, the river cruise industry is ready to welcome you back with open arms and sparkling ships. The changes I encountered on my recent cruise were mostly a source of comfort and security. Some of the paperwork was tedious and repetitive, however, this is how the travel world is evolving and we need to adapt if we want to get out and explore.

We had a generally good experience. Most new passengers board in Engelhartszell, but 17 passengers boarded the ship in Vienna. The crew was very friendly, although it was primarily a German language oriented cruise lines.

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

What people love about danube river cruises in september.

This tour was wonderful. Hit all the highlights. Definitely recommend.
The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise
Al-Rosa did an excellent job. Food was good and lots of it, the cabin was clean and comfortable. The staff were always friendly and helpful and Sabrina did a great job of looking after everyone and made sure that we were always at the right place at the right time. The tours were great and we enjoyed our evenings in the lounge with music and quizzes by Erich. We had a great holiday!

River Cruises on the Danube

A journey on the most beautiful river in europe.

The Danube is probably the most unique and interesting river in Europe. With a length of almost 2,900 kilometers, the river runs from the Black Forest to the Black Sea and crosses ten countries on its journey. Accordingly, there is a lot to see and experience on a river cruise on the Danube. With Vienna and Budapest, two of Europe's most beautiful and important cities lie on the banks of the Danube, their magnificent buildings bearing witness to their centuries-old history. But travelers should also have seen historic cities such as Regensburg, Passau, Linz and Bratislava.

A Danube cruise, however, is not only a journey through the history and architecture of Europe, but above all a foray through some of the most beautiful natural landscapes of our continent. The lovely, hilly landscape of the Wachau with its numerous vineyards, the wild and romantic mountain range of the Carpathians and the gentle estuary of the river at the Black Sea are only three of the scenic highlights on the long way of the river.

Amadeus Riva cruise review — spectacular memories on the Danube

Gillian bowditch hops aboard a new river tour and finds there’s no better way to see the magnificent capitals of central europe.

The five-star Amadeus Riva

B y the time you are in the market for a river cruise down the Danube, there is a whole degree of discernment that needs to be accommodated. From the crispness of the Egyptian cotton sheets and the fluffiness of the robes to the size of the walk-in wardrobe and the plumpness of the pillows, standards must be met.

The Amadeus Riva has this licked. Launched in 2023, the five-star floating hotel is shipshape and Bristol fashion: teabags proudly from Yorkshire, fresh flowers that wilted not a petal on our seven-night voyage from Passau to Budapest then back to Linz.

The cruise starts its seven-night voyage in Passau, Germany

As it was my first cruise I had some preconceived ideas. Some were justified — it’s hard not to succumb to the inevitable herd mentality, although it was easier to escape the enforced jollities than I had expected — but many were not. River travel is much more soothing than any other form, and the Danube is a charming, surprisingly rural river, despite being a working waterway and the second-longest river in Europe.

The balance of excursions to private time was judged well, with one city or attraction to explore each day. First stop, medieval Regensburg, which was the first of seven Unesco world heritage sites on the trip.

• Scenic Eclipse II review — the most luxurious cruise around Scotland

Our guide was sympathetic when we decided to escape the tyranny of the tour flag too. There’s something charming about discovering a city by yourself, slipping into the cool interior of a baroque church or lingering over a courtyard that you might otherwise stride through. Well-informed local guides are part of every excursion along with personal headsets for those who enjoy a guided tour.

Salzburg, “where the hills are alive with the sound of tourists”

On day two we jumped off the ship and onto a coach to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the backdrop to The Sound of Music . In August the hills are alive with the sound of tourists. To escape the hordes we walked along the footpath overlooking this chocolate-box town nestled into the Austrian Alps on the River Salzach, before descending to take in another magnificent cathedral.

Anyone suffering from a deficit of the ecclesiastical baroque will be cured on this cruise. From the Wedgewood blue church of Dürnstein to the splendour of Melk Abbey, an 11th-century working Benedictine Abbey, there is no shortage of places to worship — that’s before you even get to the magnificent cathedrals of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.

St. Francis of Assisi Church in Vienna

Those three capital cities in three consecutive days constituted the remarkable finale of the trip. There is no other way it would have been possible to do this without a rigmarole of packing bags and moving hotel. Each city offered up some spectacular memory, not least the Albertina Museum in Vienna, whose almost empty state rooms housed works by Albrecht Dürer and drawings by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

One of the ship’s 79 rooms

The best way to think of this Danube cruise is as a smorgasbord of culture — a tempting tapas that leaves you wanting more. My first act on arriving home was to plan another trip to Vienna with my daughter next year.

Talking of food, the chefs did a good job with the limited kitchen space. Breakfast buffets were robust and plentiful; lunch was either formal in the dining room or light in the upstairs lounge and dinner was four courses, except when it was seven. Packed meals were available for day trips. The sommeliers were unstinting with the wine. Everything was included and there was no mandatory tipping or hidden expenses.

Dinner on the Amadeus Riva is usually a four-course affair

Rob, our cruise master, gave it his all, even switching from lederhosen to spangles to boogie the night away to some golden oldies. The staff were charming and accommodating in equal measure. On the final night after dinner the Amadeus Riva cruised the length of Budapest, where the fairytale bridges and buildings on either side of the banks of the Danube were lit up like the set of a Christmas ballet.

In the balmy evening air, with a glass of fizz in our hands and the strains of Johann Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz undercut by the lapping of the water against the side of the boat, this famous waterway that stretches from the Black Forest to the Black Sea was at its magnificent best and we left the trip on a high note.

Gillian Bowditch was a guest of Great Rail Journeys ( greatrail.com ). The Beautiful Blue Danube cruise costs from £1,595pp for seven nights, full-board on Riva’s sister ship, Imperial, including drinks, excursions, all transfers, flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Munich via London, plus one night’s B&B in London.

Embark in Budapest

Embark to our luxury cruise ship where our friendly crew will be waiting to welcome you on board and help you settle into your beautifully crafted floating hotel.

There’s always a sense of expectancy and excitement on the first night and, after an excellent dinner in the stylish restaurant, conversation is sure to revolve around the adventures ahead.

Budapest city

We'll wake up having journeyed upstream to Esztergom - nicknamed 'The Rome of Hungary’ (and with countless monuments, palaces and temples, it's definitely earned its nickname). As one of the country's oldest towns - and a royal capital during medieval times - there's plenty of history to explore here and nowhere in the city is richer with history than the basilica.

Standing sentinel over the Danube on the border with Slovakia, Esztergom Basilica is the seat of the country's archbishop and home to one of the world's largest altarpieces. The painting - which depicts the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Girolamo Michelangelo Grigoletti - is the largest painting in the world painted on a single piece of canvas – and it’s not just its size that makes it spectacular (but you’ll have to see it for yourself to truly comprehend its beauty). We'll enjoy a guided tour of the basilica, seeing the magnificent painting - and other priceless religious artefacts.

The first floor is home to the treasury, lined with hand-crafted masterpieces, important relics and ornate instruments once used in the cathedral - their shine is almost blinding. Here, you'll see one of the most elaborately decorated Gothic chalices in the world, made in the 15th century using a special goldsmith technique. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is amazing.

Nestling below are a myriad of churches resonating with the atmospheric sounds of choir; this is the best of provincial Hungary, and little has changed since Habsburg times. As you enjoy your first lunch on board, we'll leave Esztergom in our wake. Top tip: Stay on the sun deck (or look out of the panoramic windows on board) to spot the different landscapes, towns and villages of Hungary on one riverbank and Slovakia on the other.

+ Included experience – Visit to Esztergom Basilica.

are river cruises happening on the danube

This morning, we'll explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour exploring the city’s long history. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored Old Town. The imposing 17th-century castle commanding expansive views across the Danube and the gleaming white turret of St. Martin's Cathedral - the largest (and oldest) church in the city - are hard to miss. The cathedral is a landmark of the Habsburg dynasty, it saw the ascension of many Hungarian monarchs between the mid-1500s and 1830, including 10 kings, 1 queen and 7 royal wives (there's even a large replica of the Hungarian crown on the spire to remind you of its imperial past). Inside, you can roam through the spacious courtyard - following in the footsteps of royalty and venture up the cathedral's staircase for panoramic views of the Old Town.

This afternoon, we'll cruise into Lower Austria, a peaceful, bucolic region and home to some of the country’s best wines.

Our captain’s not one to boast, but he’ll show off his skills as we navigate along the serene river and through the locks. The mechanisms here never cease to fascinate guests as we continue to cruise towards Dürnstein during dinner.

+ Included Experience – Guided tour of Bratislava.

are river cruises happening on the danube

Dürnstein & Melk

Dürnstein is known principally for the ice-blue tower of its abbey, which dominates the view, and the castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 after being captured on his return from the crusades.

This morning, we’ll take a guided walking tour to explore this memorable town. Set on a rocky outcrop high above the river, the castle is now ruined, but it’s easy to imagine England’s legendary monarch seething with frustration far from home, while waiting for his family to raise funds to pay his ransom.

After lunch on board, we’ll head to the remarkable Melk Abbey. Nothing quite prepares you for your first sight of this enormous honey-coloured building, standing resplendent above the surrounding countryside. Originally a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine Order in the 11th-century and, although reconstructed in Baroque style during the 18th century, it has remained a monastic school and monastery ever since.

The Abbey is renowned for its 214-yard-long Emperor’s Gallery lined with portraits, many fine rooms and an ornate library. After rejoining the ship, dinner will be served during the final part of our cruise upstream through the pretty Nibelungengau, immortalised in the music of Wagner.

+ Included Experience – Guided tours of Dürnstein & Melk Abbey.

Salzburg & Mauthausen

After reaching our mooring in Linz, we'll take a drive to Salzburg to discover some of the city's main sites in the company of an expert local guide including a visit to Collegiate Church – the church of the University of Salzburg. It’s one of the most important Baroque Churches in Austria, built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. While the outside is striking with intricate detailing, the inside seems bare by comparison. Every wall and all decorative elements are white and there are no paintings as not to distract from the overall architecture. It makes for an excellent venue for concerts, theatre performances and art exhibitions. It’s also steeped in history – look closely and you’ll see scorch marks on the marble floor from when the building was used as a warehouse for hay during Salzburg’s Napoleonic occupation.

Later, you can enjoy time at leisure to explore Salzburg as you wish. It was once an independent state whose archbishops turned it into one of the most sophisticated cities north of the Alps - and it still is today. You'll probably have heard of its most famous resident - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was born and spent the first 25 years of his short life living in Salzburg. Understandably, they're very proud of him. You can't walk through the city without spotting something that pays homage to him: statues, ice cream, chocolate - even rubber ducks! You can feel his influence throughout, especially in the beautiful music that drifts through the streets from violinists and harpists who practise in the square.  It's a must-see destination for any music lover.

Dominating the skyline is Salzburg Cathedral - a stunning feat of baroque architecture with a mighty dome and two towers - which rises from the delightful Altstadt, or Old Town. This UNESCO-protected area is sure to enchant you with its unique mixture of medieval and baroque buildings - it's well worth a wander during time at leisure this afternoon.

Alternatively, after our guided tour of Salzburg, you may choose to join us for a visit the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial. Places like this need no introduction. As a company, our philosophy is to inform our clients about all aspects of the countries we visit, which includes the dark side of history as well as ‘tourist musts.'

When the memorial was established in 1949, only remnants of the original camp remained. In place of the wooden barracks, nations have erected their own memorials to the victims. The guided tour will be extremely moving as you move through the cemetery, memorials and exhibitions. If you wish to stay in Salzburg for the full day instead, you are free to do so.

Please note lunch is not included on this day; however, the ship will offer a packed lunch. We return to the ship for another splendid dinner as we sail overnight to Vienna.

+ Included experience – Guided tour of Salzburg & optional visit to Mauthausen

are river cruises happening on the danube

The city’s very name provokes images of elegance, fine music, wide boulevards, Baroque architecture and a rich tapestry of people who were drawn here from all corners of Europe.

For 200 years until the First World War, Vienna was the cultural centre of Europe and many of the showpiece buildings, galleries, aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches you see today were built to reflect its imperial status. The city’s most iconic monument is the breathtaking Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, whose striking multi-coloured roof and huge Gothic South Tower dominate the skyline.

There’s also the colossal Hofburg, the former royal court that is now home to a collection of museums, the Crown Jewels and the Spanish Riding School, and where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs. Then there are the lavish Imperial Apartments and an outstanding collection of relics of the Holy Roman Empire, including, allegedly, the sabre of Charlemagne himself. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, which contains the world’s fourth-largest collection of paintings, is just across the road.

This morning we’ll tour the city with a local guide who’ll offer insights into why Vienna is one of Europe’s great capitals – it was the seat of the Habsburg emperors and played host to some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and, of course, a whole family of Strausses.

Later, after lunch on board, we'll take the short drive to explore Schönbrunn Palace - one of the most popular sights in Vienna. We'll experience the opulence of the Habsburg dynasty and explore the stunning architecture, richly furnished rooms and expansive garden of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

While the palace was commissioned in the 17th century by Emperor Leopold I, it was Empress Marie Theresa who transformed it into the Palace we see today. On the imperial tour, we'll see the grandeur of Austria's imperial history, walking in the footsteps of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Joseph. Adorned with exquisite furniture, elaborate chandeliers, and intricate wall hangings, these rooms offer a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of the Habsburg dynasty. Don't miss the portraits in the Great Gallery, the exotic influences of the 'Chinese Cabinets', and the impressive Hall of Ceremonies.

This evening we’ve arranged what is truly the ‘icing on the cake’: After a spectacular Gala Dinner with specially selected dishes inspired by the destinations we’ve visited on our voyage, we’ll enjoy a classical recital. No visit to Vienna is complete without a live musical experience, to hear this exquisite music played in the city of its creation makes a wonderful finale to the day. Later this evening, we’ll begin the final journey to Budapest.

+ Included experience – Guided tour of Vienna, afternoon visit to Schönbrunn Palace & live classical recital

After a morning cruising through Hungary’s pastoral landscapes (and lunch on board), we'll start our sightseeing tour of this captivating city, which truly lives up to its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Danube’.

The twin cities of Buda - built around the hilltop fortress - and Pest have been fought over through the centuries. The Ottomans ruled here for 150 years before being ousted in the late 17th century, but their legacy lives on in the many thermal baths fed by hot springs, giving rise to Budapest’s other sobriquet – the ‘City of Spas’.

After the end of Ottoman rule, Budapest became an imperial city of the Habsburg Empire, attracting great cultural and commercial wealth - so there's plenty of art and history to uncover here.

Today, you can choose your city tour experience with adventures that cater to a more historical focus or an art-focus.

A history-filled adventure in Budapest begins at Castle Hill where you could choose to explore the beautiful castle district. There are two churches, seven museums and a theatre among streets and squares that beg to be explored - each with its own special atmosphere. Here, you can look out at a dramatic view across the river to the awe-inspiring neo-Gothic Parliament Building and beyond. Budapest’s endless museums and outstanding Art Nouveau architecture are fittingly elegant end to your Danube cruise - and if you're looking for souvenirs the city has excellent shopping opportunities.

Alternatively, you could choose to include a visit to Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts within your tour of the city – it's the perfect sanctuary for any art-lover. With an extensive European Art collection, you can get lost amongst treasures spanning from ancient times to the end of the 18th century. The Egyptian collection is one of the richest of its kind - thanks to 19th-century globe trotters, art collectors and dealers who visited the Nile Valley during their pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. There's also a comprehensive collection of antiquities - especially rich in Greek and Etruscan antiquities - almost 3000 artworks by the old masters - Raphael, Titian, Velázquez, Hans Holbein, Poussins and John Constables (to name just a few of our favourites) - create a unique mix. You don't have to be an art enthusiast to appreciate the art, history and culture housed here.

This evening’s dinner closes with a lively folklore show, giving you your last taste of Hungarian art and culture. Then it’s time to enjoy one last evening with your brilliant travel companions and reflect on all the inspirational places, sights and sounds you have experienced on a truly ‘imperial’ cruise.

are river cruises happening on the danube

Monet could not capture the beauty along the Seine River in his paintings in the span of seven days. Strauss was not finished admiring the Danube River in just one week. And with more than 40 castles along the banks of the Rhine , surely seven nights only gives you a brief taste of the fascinating history and sights that await.

Some of our most well-traveled loyal guests have returned to the same river multiple times, yet they have had a unique experience each time. Here are just a few reasons why.

Different Seasons

The city centers of Budapest and Vienna hum with holiday activity during Christmastime, yet offer a different and calmer atmosphere in February, or during October and November. As the new wine from the season’s harvest begins to flow in November, Austrian Heurigers spring to life, inviting all who visit to share in the magical ambience of these seasonal celebrations. Autumn cloaks the vineyards and scenery of the Moselle River in vivid colors of fall finery – a much different garb than the emerald hues the hills display for guests who sail in the spring and summer. With the various backdrops that different times of the year offer, exploring the same destination can lead to an entirely unique experience.

are river cruises happening on the danube

Multiple Excursions Offered

The variety of excursions offered on AmaWaterways’ itineraries invites you to choose your own adventure as you explore the destinations that reside along the rivers. On the Rhine River, for example, your ship docks in Ludwigshafen, but you have the choice to either venture to the university town of Heidelberg with its castle or hike along the Neckar River, immerse yourself in medieval Speyer and its unique history, or take a bike tour through Ladenburg. These three unique destinations are all available in one morning! Even when your ship is docked in the same port and our excursions all take place there, a gondola ride over the winemaking village of Rüdesheim does not quite have the same feel as a hike through its vineyards. On the Danube River, while your ship is docked in Linz, Austria, you may follow the sound of music in Salzburg, head off the beaten path to charming Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, or choose either a walking tour or bike tour through Linz.

are river cruises happening on the danube

Enjoy Your Own Free Time

Cruise Managers and Receptionists can offer maps and suggestions on places to see and explore that are not included on our itineraries. On most of our European ships, you may even use bicycles from our complimentary onboard fleet and pedal through a destination at your own leisure. While excursions are included and offer the best value with enriching history shared by exceptional local tour guides, there is something to be said for wandering through a city on your own and returning to your home base – your warm, inviting river cruise ship where your friendly AmaWaterways family awaits you.

Different Itineraries and Ships

Just because you have cruised our Romantic Danube  itinerary does not mean you will have experienced every single delight the Danube River has to offer! Our   Legendary Danube and Blue Danube Discovery  itineraries include history-rich German cities as Regensburg and Nuremberg that are not included on our other Danube River itineraries. When visiting Libourne during our Taste of Bordeaux itinerary in 2025, you can travel back in time as you explore an ancient watermill and learn the intriguing tradition of breadmaking in an all-new excursion. Embarking on a ship that you haven’t sailed before can also enhance your river cruise experience. If you have ever cruised aboard AmaMagna , you know that this innovative ship is a destination in and of itself – one that you won’t want to leave unexplored!

are river cruises happening on the danube

The People You Cruise With

Cruising with multiple generations of your family, or with all your siblings or cousins, creates a much different environment than sailing solo or taking a couple’s cruise does. If you loved one of our destinations, bring someone else on board next time or experience it all for yourself traveling solo . As you glide down the rivers with your travel companions – whether you knew them before embarkation or befriended them on board during a Sip & Sail cocktail hour – you will create lasting memories in the iconic destinations you explore together.

Bottom line: Even if you have cruised with us several times, you are not finished with Europe – and it isn’t finished with you. Come explore a cherished region on a different itinerary in a different season and see what you’ve been missing!   Contact your preferred travel advisor to reserve your next river cruise today and review your Loyalty Benefits here.

River Cruise Guide for Seniors Along the Danube and Rhine

W elcome to our guide on river cruising, specially designed for seniors who love to travel! River cruises are a great way for seniors to see beautiful places comfortably and easily. They are perfect if you don’t like the trouble of packing and unpacking a lot. In this guide, we talk about two famous European rivers: the Danube and the Rhine. These cruises for seniors will show you lovely views and old cities and make sure you’re comfortable the whole time. Whether you travel a lot or this is your first cruise, this guide will show you why river cruises are great for seniors. Sit back, relax, and join us as we explore why a Danube and Rhine river cruise is a wonderful choice for seniors.

Why Choose a River Cruise for Seniors?

For seniors looking for a memorable travel experience, river cruises are an excellent choice. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises offer a more intimate and relaxed journey. They typically host fewer passengers, which means more personal attention and less crowding. This is especially appealing to seniors who value comfort and a peaceful environment.

One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the scenic and gentle nature of the journey. These cruises glide along historic waterways, offering stunning views of landscapes, quaint villages, and iconic cities. The slower pace of river cruising is perfect for seniors who want to enjoy their travel without feeling rushed. It’s an effortless way to see multiple destinations while enjoying the luxury of staying in one place.

Moreover, river cruises are known for their accessibility. The smaller size of river ships means easier navigation for seniors, with fewer stairs and more convenient access to all areas of the vessel. This accessibility extends to shore excursions as well, which are often tailored to be senior-friendly.

Finally, river cruises provide an enriching cultural experience. From onboard lectures about local history and culture to excursions that take you into the heart of each destination, these cruises offer a deeper understanding and appreciation of the places visited. It’s not just a journey; it’s an immersive cultural experience, making it an ideal choice for seniors eager to explore and learn.

River cruises offer seniors a comfortable, scenic, and culturally rich travel experience perfectly suited to their pace and interests.

Exploring the Danube River

The Danube River, Europe’s second-longest river, is a treasure trove of experiences for senior travelers. Flowing through ten countries, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural diversity. A cruise along the Danube is not just a journey through a scenic waterway; it’s a passage through centuries of history and culture.

For seniors embarking on a Danube River cruise, the experience begins with the breathtaking landscapes. The river meanders through rolling hills, vineyards, and dramatic cliffs, offering ever-changing vistas that are easily enjoyed from the comfort of the ship. This serene setting is perfect for those who wish to relax and soak in the natural beauty of a tranquil environment.

As the cruise progresses, a series of enchanting cities and towns unfold along the banks.

Vienna , the city of music, enchants with its imperial architecture and classical concerts – a treat for seniors who appreciate the finer arts.

In Budapest , the stunning Hungarian capital split by the river, you can witness the majestic Parliament building, especially captivating when lit up at night. Bratislava, with its charming old town and laid-back atmosphere, offers a quieter but equally rewarding experience.

For history enthusiasts, the Danube River cruise is a journey back in time. Visit ancient fortresses like Devin Castle near Bratislava, or explore the Roman ruins in Viminacium, near Belgrade. Each site tells a story that enriches the travel experience.

The Danube also presents a culinary journey. Seniors can indulge in local flavors, tasting dishes that have been perfected over generations. From the hearty goulash of Hungary to Austria’s famous pastries, each region offers its own culinary delights. Additionally, wine lovers will appreciate the fine wines produced in the Wachau Valley, renowned for its vineyards.

Each stop along the Danube offers leisurely-paced excursions, ensuring senior travelers can explore comfortably at their own pace. These excursions often include guided tours with knowledgeable guides who provide insights into the local history and culture, making the experience both enjoyable and educational.

The Danube River cruise for seniors is a splendid blend of natural beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s a journey that satisfies the soul and sparks the imagination, leaving travelers with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Exploring the Rhine River

A cruise along the Rhine River is a journey through the heart of Europe, offering senior travelers an enchanting mix of fairy-tale landscapes, medieval castles, and vibrant cultural centers. Stretching from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine passes through a variety of stunning landscapes and historic cities, making it a prime destination for a leisurely and enriching cruise experience.

As seniors embark on a Rhine River cruise, they are greeted by the picturesque beauty of the river’s banks. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly breathtaking with its steep vineyards, quaint villages, and numerous castles perched on hillsides. This section, often referred to as the Romantic Rhine truly captures the essence of a storybook in Europe.

The cities along the Rhine are equally captivating. Cologne, with its iconic twin-spired cathedral, is a must-visit for its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Strasbourg, in the Alsace region, is enchanted with its blend of French and German cultures, showcased in its architecture, cuisine, and unique Alsatian wines. Basel, known for its art and culture, offers a more laid-back experience, ideal for seniors who appreciate the quieter side of city life.

Historical exploration is a significant aspect of the Rhine cruise. The region is dotted with castles and fortresses that date back to the Middle Ages, like the imposing Marksburg Castle and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. These sites provide a window into the past and are often accompanied by fascinating stories and legends.

The Rhine also offers a culinary journey that appeals to senior travelers. From the hearty German cuisine and world-class Rieslings to the delicate flavors of Alsace, each region along the river offers its own gastronomic delights. Many cruises include onboard tastings and themed dinners, providing a taste of local flavors in a comfortable setting.

Moreover, the pace of a Rhine cruise is particularly suitable for seniors. With options for leisurely strolls in port towns and relaxed sightseeing tours, travelers can explore at a comfortable pace. The accessibility of these tours ensures that the beauty and culture of the Rhine are easily enjoyed by all.

In summary, a Rhine River cruise presents a wonderful combination of scenic beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s an ideal choice for senior travelers seeking a relaxing yet enriching European adventure.

8 Must-Haves for Your River Cruise

Embarking on a river cruise, especially for seniors, calls for thoughtful preparation to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some must-haves that you should consider packing for your Danube or Rhine river cruise:

  • Comfortable Footwear: As you’ll likely be exploring a lot during port stops, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Opt for sturdy, non-slip shoes that can handle cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
  • Layered Clothing: Weather can be unpredictable, especially when cruising along European rivers. Pack lightweight, layered clothing that can easily be added or removed. Include a waterproof jacket for unexpected rain showers.
  • Binoculars : To fully appreciate the scenic vistas along the rivers, a pair of binoculars is a great accessory. They’re perfect for viewing architectural details of distant castles or spotting wildlife along the riverbanks.
  • Medications and Health Supplies: Apart from your prescription medications, bring along basic health supplies like pain relievers, band-aids, and any daily vitamins. Also, consider seasickness remedies if you’re prone to motion sickness, though river cruises are generally very smooth.
  • Portable Power Bank: A power bank is handy for long days out when you might need to charge your phone or camera.
  • Travel Documents and Currency: Keep your passport, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas easily accessible. Also, carry some local currency for small purchases ashore, as some smaller shops may not accept credit cards.
  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunhat, and sunscreen are crucial, especially during the summer months, to protect against the sun’s rays while you’re enjoying the deck or on excursions.
  • Camera : Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture memorable landscapes and historic sights.

Packing these essentials will help ensure that your river cruise experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, letting you focus on the beauty and culture of the Danube and Rhine rivers.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Seniors

Selecting the right river cruise is key to ensuring a fulfilling and comfortable experience, especially for senior travelers. When considering a cruise along the Danube or Rhine, there are several factors to keep in mind:

Cruise Line and Ship Size:

Different cruise lines cater to varying preferences and styles. Some offer a more luxurious experience, while others focus on cultural immersion. Smaller ships often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, which can be ideal for seniors seeking a relaxed pace and easy accessibility.

Cabin Comfort and Accessibility:

AmaViola Suite

Consider the layout and facilities of the cabins. For seniors, it’s important to choose a cabin that is easily accessible, preferably without many stairs. Some ships offer cabins specifically designed for seniors or those with mobility issues, featuring wider doorways and walk-in showers.

Itinerary and Duration:

Look at the itinerary closely. Some cruises might be more port-intensive, with daily stops and excursions, while others offer more days at sea for relaxation. Depending on your stamina and interest, choose an itinerary that balances sightseeing with downtime. Duration is also a key consideration – shorter cruises might be a better fit for those who tire easily.

Pace of Activities:

Check the type and pace of activities offered. Many river cruises offer a range of excursion options, from leisurely walking tours to more active adventures. Ensure that there are activities suited to your comfort level and interests.

Medical Facilities and Services:

Confirm the availability of medical services onboard. While river cruises are generally safe, having medical support readily available provides peace of mind, especially for those with health concerns.

Dining Options:

Consider the dining arrangements. Look for cruises that offer flexible dining times and a variety of meal options, catering to different dietary needs and preferences.

Reviews and Recommendations:

Finally, read reviews and seek recommendations from other senior travelers. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into what to expect and help you make an informed decision.

Senior travelers can choose a river cruise that not only meets their needs but also provides an enriching and enjoyable experience along the Danube and Rhine rivers considering these factors.

Making the Most of Your River Cruise Experience

To truly enjoy your Danube or Rhine river cruise, embrace every moment. Engage with fellow travelers and share stories; these interactions often enhance the travel experience. Participate in onboard activities and attend educational talks to deepen your understanding of the regions you’re visiting.

Don’t hesitate to spend some quiet time on the deck, soaking in the scenic landscapes and peaceful ambiance of the river. Remember, the beauty of a river cruise lies not just in the destinations but in the journey itself. So, relax, stay present, and savor the unique experiences your river cruise offers.

A river cruise along the Danube or Rhine offers seniors a wonderful blend of comfort, adventure, and cultural enrichment. It’s a chance to explore Europe’s heart in a way that’s both relaxing and engaging. So, embark on this journey and create memories that will last a lifetime. Book a river cruise .

are river cruises happening on the danube

Cruising is a very popular way to see the world these days, and for good reason. Taking a cruise allows you to see numerous different cities and/or countries within a single vacation, and it’s pretty hassle-free. No need to coordinate hotels and transportation for multiple different destinations, just get on the boat and everything is taken care of for you. And it can be done affordably, if you know some good industry tips and tricks (which WorldMark by Wyndham Travel does, and is happy to share with you — read on).

Ocean cruises are perhaps the better-known option, but river cruises are an up-and-comer in the travel industry, and have grown increasingly popular in the last decade or so. Because of their new-found fame, more and more river cruise vendors are springing up, giving you more options, more price points, and more flexibility if you’re looking to book a river cruise. At this point there are just as many options for river cruises as there are for ocean cruises, which means you can pretty much have your pick of amazing cruises the world over. If a river cruise is calling your name, here is everything you need to know about booking a river cruise.

Pretty much every large river that is near a major metropolitan area has a river cruise option. The European river cruises are probably the most well-known of the river cruise options, and for good reason — Europe’s waterways are very well-connected, making cruising from city to city within Europe an easy way to experience more than one place. But Europe’s rivers aren’t the only ones that offer river cruises. Check out these popular river cruise options, listed by continent:

  • Egypt — Nile River
  • South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe — Chobe and Zambezi rivers"
  • Cambodia and Vietnam — Mekong River
  • China — Yangtze River
  • India — Ganges River
  • Russia — Volga River
  • Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia — Murray River
  • Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary — Upper Danube River
  • Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania — Lower Danube River
  • Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands — The Rhine River
  • France — The Seine, Rhone, and Saone rivers
  • Portugal and Spain — The Douro River
  • Italy — The Po River

North America

  • Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee — Mississippi River
  • Oregon, Washington, and Idaho — Columbia and Snake rivers
  • New York — Hudson River"

South America

  • Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador — Amazon River

There are many perks and benefits to choosing a river cruise over an ocean cruise. For starters, the most obvious benefit is that river cruises can take you to places that ocean cruises can’t. Sure, large ocean liners can hop from island to island in the Caribbean, no problem, but they can’t take you down the Nile River past the pyramids in Egypt, or up the Amazon River surrounded by the Brazilian rainforest and exotic wildlife. When you cruise on a river, you’re able to sightsee 24/7 — there are no full days or nights at sea without land in sight. You’re constantly surrounded by beautiful scenic landscapes, interesting landmarks, and urban areas, both big and small. You’ll never run out of things to look at on a river cruise.

Additionally, river cruises are smaller and more intimate than ocean cruises. On an ocean liner, there may be thousands of passengers and hundreds of options for things to see and do on board. River cruise boats are smaller, with a passenger list in the hundreds instead of thousands, and are quieter, with a more relaxed setting and less glitz and glamor. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises tend to be truly all-inclusive; on ocean cruises things like shore excursions, alcohol, and some entertainment options cost extra, whereas on river cruises everything from your nightly cocktail to your museum tour is included in the cost. And a bonus: calm river waters generally mean you won’t get seasick!
