“I’ve got so many amazing memories of my time in Australia over the years. Our last trip was so much fun. We had such an incredible time. Each show was a party, so we know this is going to be incredibly special. Australia we are going to rock! I can’t wait to see you.” - Paul

Paul will bring his acclaimed Got Back Tour to Australia this October/November!

Got Back starts with an intimate arena show in Adelaide, the city where The Beatles made history in 1964 on their first visit to Australia. An estimated 350,000 people lined the streets between the airport and Town Hall to catch a glimpse of the band. Paul will then travel to Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast performing in stadiums – with the shows in Newcastle and the Gold Coast being his first concerts there. These dates will see Paul return for his first live performances in Australia in six years. Paul was last in Australia in December 2017 (which saw him win a Helpmann Award for Best International Contemporary Concert in 2018), wowing audiences nationwide with a near three-hour show.

With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’,  ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music – dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.

Paul launched the Got Back tour in February 2022, completing 16 huge shows across the US before performing what the British Times newspaper described as the “ best gig ever ” with his history-making set at Glastonbury in June 2022.

Featuring Paul’s longtime band – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – and constantly upgraded state of the art audio and video technology that ensures an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house, a Paul McCartney concert is never anything short of life-changing.

Fans attending shows will not only be spoilt with the presence of the living legend, Sir Rod himself, but also his very special guests. Sir Rod Stewart will be joined on his 2023 tour by revered artist Cyndi Lauper. Lauper is not only a ground-breaking talent but a Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning songwriter and performer. Her iconic voice, influential punk glamour and infectious live shows catapulted her to stardom.

Opening for all shows on the tour is also acclaimed rock singer Jon Stevens. As the frontman for Noiseworks he is a member of that exclusive club: the Kiwis who are so successful and talented that we claim them as our own.

Sir Rod Stewart’s rekindled love for songwriting is clear on his 31 st  studio album,  THE TEARS OF HERCULES . It is Stewart’s fourth new album of original songs since 2013, when he reconnected with his songwriting muse to record Time , the chart-topping album which entered the Top 10 in the US and ten countries worldwide, including #1 in the U.K. You won’t want to miss out on this show-stopping tour, but you better act quickly as we expect it’ll be a sell-out event!

Fans enter the virtual  Waiting Room  prior to onsale time before joining the  Smart Queue  – which acts as a ‘virtual line’, helping us protect you and your tickets in a more effective way.

The time you join the Waiting Room does not determine your place in the Smart Queue, so we recommend joining at least 10 minutes prior to the event going on sale.

When the sale begins, the Smart Queue will open and everyone in the Waiting Room is given a place in line. Those who did not join the Waiting Room will be placed at the end of the line.

  • Keep an eye on the time! When it’s your turn, your spot will be held for 10 minutes to begin shopping.

Find out more about Ticketmaster’s Waiting Room and Smart Queue here

In Demand Tickets are tickets in some of the most sought after areas in the venue. Please Note – Ticket prices may fluctuate based on demand.

In Demand tickets are made available by artists and event organisers through Ticketmaster. They give fans fair and safe access to the most sought-after areas in the venue at market-driven prices (adjusting prices according to supply and demand). In Demand tickets are ticket-only purchases, and prices are subject to change at any time.

Collector tickets can only be delivered to fans via mail and can’t be sent as Print-at-Home or eTickets or collected from outlets or the venue. Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting tickets to Rod Stewart’s 2023 Australian Tour

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Rod Stewart, with very special guest Cyndi Lauper, will be bringing their tour to Australia in March 2023.  Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Australia will tour England for five men’s Test matches and the women’s Ashes and in 2023 — here’s the full schedule, list of fixtures and match timings of Ashes 2023.

England will host Australia for five men’s Test matches across June and July, 2023, in a quest to regain the Ashes that they conceded when they lost 0-4 on the 2017/18 tour of Australia. Since then, England have drawn 2-2 at home and lost 0-4 again in 2021/22, when they toured Australia. However, with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum at the helm, England will back themselves in Test cricket’s oldest contest.

This will be the first time in 139 years that England will not host an Ashes Test match in August. The Test matches will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

Paul McCartney ‘s musical career began in Liverpool, England, in the early 1960s when he co-founded The Beatles with John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Paul McCartney started his solo career after the Beatles disbanded in 1970. As a lead guitarist, backup singer, and lead vocalist on occasion, McCartney III, his most recent album, will be released on December 18, 2020. Paul McCartney released 18 solo studio albums during his long and successful career. Paul McCartney always continues touring worldwide after the band’s split.

McCartney’s upcoming Australian tour in 2023 promises to be an incredible musical trip through the eras. McCartney’s set list will undoubtedly include a selection of his best hits from The Beatles and his distinguished solo career. Songs such as “Hey Jude,” “Let It Be,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” and “Maybe I’m Amazed” are likely to be performed on this tour.

Beyond the music, Paul McCartney’s Australian Tour 2023 has sentimental meaning. For many fans, attending this event is more than simply seeing a musical icon; it’s an emotional voyage back in time. The memories associated with The Beatles’ songs frequently elicit nostalgia, reminding fans of their childhood, first loves, and life-changing events.

Frontier Touring CEO Dion Brandy talked about the upcoming Australia tour:

“At least a few places different.  We saw when Elton John came just how Newcastle embraced the show and embraced Elton and his team. We were super excited to suggest the to Paul [McCartney] and we are really excited that he’s agreed to do it.

People were blown away and there was so much regret from people who didn’t go, back in 2017. To be honest, we started conversations then about coming back the following summer… And then Paul got quite busy. And you know, it’s Paul McCartney … So you take the time frame you can get.”

Paul McCartney also shared a statement about the 2023 Australia tour:

“I have got so many amazing memories of my time in Australia over the years. Our last trip was so much fun. We had such an incredible time. Each show was a party, so we know this is going to be incredibly special.

Australia, we are going to rock! I can’t wait to see you.”

Riders to watch at Paris-Roubaix 2024

Men's race - 2024 riders to watch.

  • Mathieu van der Poel (NED/Alpecin Deceuninck): Can anyone beat the defending champion in his current shape? Fresh off his third Tour of Flanders title, there is no doubt that the Dutch superstar is the man to beat at the Paris-Roubaix 2024. If van der Poel manages to win "The Hell of the North" for the second time in his career, he will be in joint 10th place for most cycling Monument wins in history with six victories.
  • Jasper Philipsen (BEL/Alpecin Deceuninck): Van der Poel's Belgian teammate is one of the fastest sprinters on the planet. He proved that by winning the points classification at the Tour de France and more recently, the 'sprinter's classic' Milano-Sanremo last month. Philipsen was the runner-up in 2023 and knows how to ride the cobblestones in Northern France.
  • Mads Pedersen (DEN/Lidl-Trek): The Dane beat van der Poel at the Gent-Wevelgem in a two-man sprint finish and by that showed that the big favourite is beatable. Pedersen was one of the victims of a mass crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen last week, but the 2019 road race world champion seems to have recovered, as he tried to anticipate van der Poel in the Tour of Flanders with an early attack. Unfortunately for the Lidl-Trek rider, he ran out of juice and finished the race in 22nd place.
  • Nils Politt (GER/UAE Team Emirates): The UAE Team Emirates rode a solid Tour of Flanders and used their numbers to get Politt on the podium - and three riders in the top five. In 2019, the German finished second behind Philippe Gilbert. He will be eager to improve that result.

Women's race - 2024 riders to watch

  • Alison Jackson (CAN/EF Education-Cannondale): It was a big suprise when the Canadian upset the stars of the women's peloton last year and claimed the biggest victory of her career. The reigning champion has struggled to find her form from last spring, however, having a tenth place as her best result this season. Jackson will be an outsider for this year's race.
  • Lotte Kopecky (BEL/Team SD Worx-Protime): The road race world champion has started the year brilliantly by winning the UAE Tour overall, Strade Bianche Donne and Danilith Nokere Koerse. In Sunday's Tour of Flanders, the Belgian was suffering on the cobbled climbs and missed out on the podium spots. Nevertheless, Kopecky has previously taken a second place in Paris-Roubaix and is one of top contenders.
  • Elisa Longo Borghini (ITA/Lidl-Trek): The 2022 winner of Paris-Roubaix was back on the top step of the podium in the 2024 Tour of Flanders. Consistency is what characterises the 32-year-old Italian cyclist who always features in the final of the big one-day races.
  • Marianne Vos (NED/Team Visma|Lease a Bike): The 36-year-old cycling veteran added a 250th professional win to her palmares as she clinched the Dwars door Vlaanderen last week. Paris-Roubaix is still missing on her impressive list of victories though and the two-time Olympic champion can cement herself as one of the greatest of all time if she wins the prestigious cobbled classic.

Alec Benjamin announces ‘12 Notes Tour.’ Get tickets today

In spring 2023, Alec Benjamin served as the opening act on John Mayer’s ‘Solo Tour.’

This year, he’s taking over headlining duties.

Starting in September, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter will kick off his nationwide ’12 Notes Tour’ with special guest Matt Hansen joining him on select dates.

Midway through the run, he’ll stop into New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, Sept. 28.

At all shows, Benjamin will likely perform mega hits from his catalog — including “Let Me Down Slowly,” which has notched over 1 billion streams on Spotify — as well as tracks from his forthcoming album “12 Notes,” due out May 10.

For fans who can’t wait to catch Benjamin delivering his upbeat pop live, tickets can be secured as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 12, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Benjamin wrapped his 2022 tour in Australia.

While it’s likely the upcoming run will incorporate large swaths of his yet-to-be-released album, here’s what he performed at his final ’22 gig in Brisbane, courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “Devil Doesn’t Bargain”

02.) “If I Killed Someone for You”

03.) “Dopamine Addict”

04.) “Mind Is a Prison”

05.) “Hill I Will Die On”

06.) “Death of a Hero”

07.) “One Wrong Turn”

08.) “Hipocrite”

09.) “Must Have Been the Wind”

10.) “Annabelle’s Homework”

11.) “I Built a Friend”

12.) “Shadow of Mine”

13.) “Older”

14.) “Boy In the Bubble”

15.) “If We Have Each Other”

16.) “Jesus in LA”

17.) “Paper Crown”

18.) “The Way You Felt”

19.) “Let Me Down Slowly”

20.) “Water Fountain”

21.) “Speakers”

22.) “Steve”

Benjamin’s third studio album “12 Notes” hits shelves on May 10.

Leading up to the album’s release, he’s dropped four singles.

For our money, Benjamin’s bouncy “King Size Bed” is a perfect piece of pop; expect to hear it in grocery stores and on the radio all year long.

“Pick Me,” a winsome ballad, makes for nice counter-programming as does his clever, trap-inspired “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy.”

More than anything though, we recommend checking out AB’s assured “Different Kind Of Beautiful.” This is the song you’ll be humming as you leave his show next fall.

Want to hear for yourself?

Check out “12 Notes'” singles here .

At most shows on the run, Benjamin will be supported by Matt Hansen .

Hansen, known for smash singles “LET EM GO” and “better off without me,” is currently on a tour of his own that wraps up on April 18.

Want to see him headline on his ‘something to remember tour’ this year?

You can grab tickets here .

A slew of singer-songwriters are truckin’ all over North America this year.

What Exactly Is the Winter Solstice, and When Is It Coming to Australia?

Lauren Rouse Avatar

The winter solstice is one of those events that comes around every year, but maybe you’re not fully aware of what it actually means. Let’s break it down.

Table of contents

What is the winter solstice, is it really the shortest day of the year, when is the 2024 winter solstice in australia.

winter solstice australia

The solstices and equinoxes are used to signal the change in seasons and are all based on the tilt of the Earth as it travels around the sun.

Basically, when the Earth rotates around the sun, it does so while it’s slightly off-centre. That’s why we get different seasons. Here’s how Encyclopaedia Britannica explains it:

The seasons on Earth change because the planet is slightly tilted on its axis as it travels around the Sun. This means different points on Earth receive more or less sunlight at different times of year. If Earth were not tilted, the Sun would always appear to be directly above the Equator, the amount of light a given location receives would be fixed, and there would be no seasons.

So when it comes to the solstices and equinoxes, these mark the occasions the Earth’s poles are at their maximum tilt either towards or away from the sun. The summer and winter solstices also occur at opposite times depending on which hemisphere you’re in.

So, when we in experience the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, those in the northern hemisphere will enjoy the summer solstice.

winter solstice australia

The winter solstice technically does mark the shortest day of the year, but this doesn’t mean there are fewer hours or minutes that make up the day. It also doesn’t mean this is the day when the sun rises at its latest or sets at its earliest.

As Geoscience Australia explains:

Because the path of the Earth around the Sun is an ellipse, not a circle, and because the Earth is off-centre on its axis, these combined phenomena can create up to several minutes difference between solar and mean time. Around the date of summer solstice, these effects make the Sun appear to move slightly slower than expected when measured by a watch or clock. As a result, the earliest sunrise occurs before the date of the summer solstice, and the latest sunset happens after the summer solstice. For the same reasons, around the winter solstice, the time of sunrise continues to get later in the days after the solstice.

When we refer to the shortest day of the year, we’re actually talking about the number of daylight hours. The winter solstice is the day where we’ll see the least amount of daylight in 24 hours, due to the tilt of the Earth.

winter solstice australia

The winter solstice is taking place on Friday, June 21, 2024.

As it’s the shortest day of the year, we’ll experience roughly 9 hours and 53 minutes of daylight in Sydney, although this varies depending on how far north or south you are. Hobart will have the lowest number of daylight hours around the country, with just 9 hours of light.

You can check out your city’s daylight hours over at Time and Date.

This is roughly 4 hours and 31 minutes less than the longest day of the year , which occurs on the summer solstice in December.

There’s not really much to do on the winter solstice except pack some extra layers and prepare to head to and from work in the dark.

Explore a map of the next 15 total solar eclipses.

In case you miss this year’s solar eclipse, there are 14 more in the next 20 years

A map of mostly the eastern hemisphere shows multicolored tracks of 13 total solar eclipses over the next 20 years

This map of eclipse paths from 2024 to 2044 reveals that Australia hit the jackpot: Over just 11 years, the continent (lower right) will see four total solar eclipses — in 2028, 2030, 2037 and 2038.

It’s never too soon to start thinking about the next solar eclipse.

On April 8, the moon’s shadow will sweep across North America , bringing a total solar eclipse over the homes of more than 30 million people ( SN: 1/4/24 ). But even as the shadow departs the continent in eastern Canada, the stage will be getting set for the next total eclipse. And the one after that. And the one after that.

That’s because there’s an order underpinning the mechanics that lead to any eclipse. The breathtaking celestial event is driven by the relentless, repeating rhythms of the Earth’s and moon’s motions. And that means that eclipses of all kinds — not just total solar ones — are predictable across millennia.

Thanks to that predictability, it’s possible to precisely map upcoming solar eclipses. To make this interactive map, Science News relied on NASA’s “Five millennium canon of solar eclipses”  database, a detailed accounting of every solar eclipse from 2000 B.C. to A.D. 3000.

That time span encompasses nearly 12,000 solar eclipses, roughly 3,200 of which are total eclipses. Showing them all would be a bit much. Instead, we show the tracks of the next 15 total solar eclipses, from 2024 to 2044.

In the map, the path for nearly every eclipse (differentiated by color) is marked with three lines: the northern- and southernmost edges of the band in which people will see a total eclipse and the centerline of that band. Along that line, totality lasts longer than near the edges. People in a wide swath to either side of each outer band will be able to see a partial eclipse.

Clicking on a path will offer up some details about that eclipse: The date, the time (in Universal Time ) at which the sun will be eclipsed the longest, the duration of that maximum extent and the width of the eclipse path. And typing a city, landmark or address into the map’s search bar will zoom to that spot, so you can see if any eclipses are due to visit any of your favorite haunts.

And for this year’s eclipse, clicking on any of the white flags along the path will reveal the exact time (also in Universal Time) and duration of totality at that spot.

There is one eclipse here that is a bit unusual. That one will pass through eastern Siberia on April 9, 2043 . On the map, only one line appears — the southernmost limit of totality — because the centerline doesn’t intersect with Earth’s surface. In this “noncentral eclipse,” the centerline and the whole northern half of the shadow will miss Earth entirely, cast off into the depths of space.

Hardcore eclipse fans, intent on seeing every kind imaginable, might want to plan for that one. The next noncentral total eclipse won’t happen until 2459 .
