How To Reach Baratang Island From Port Blair

Baratang Island can be reached via Bus, Cab or Ferry from Port Blair. No Two-wheelers are allowed en route Baratang Island.

Convoy to Baratang from Port Blair

1. Shared Trips To Baratang

By Government Bus  There are shared trips in Govt NON AC Buses. They start from Port Blair early in the morning. These buses, go further from Baratang to North and Middle Andamans, may not return to Port Blair on the same day. So you have to take a different bus from the Baratang Bus terminus to return on the same day. This is the most economical mode to reach Baratang. However, the con here is that these buses do not pick you from your place. You have to board the bus either from the main Bus terminus or at some designated point on the ATR (Andaman Grand Trunk Road) where the bus may make pit stops. You have to book the seats for these buses in advance from the Govt. Bus terminus and confirm your pick up point with them only.

By Private AC Coaches Just like the Govt Bus, the private buses also start from Port Blair early in the morning. Being AC Coaches, it is understood that it is slightly expensive than the government buses. But the additional cost is always worth the comfort. There are also special coaches available who go on a day trip to Baratang and come back on the same day. These coaches also need to be pre-booked and like the government buses, these private coaches also do not pick you from your accommodation place. You have to be board the bus either from the starting point of the bus as mentioned on the tickets or somewhere on the ATR where the bus may make pit stops. In this case, you have to confirm with the bus operators or the concerned travel agency to check that which is the nearest point from where you can board the bus.

2. By Private Cabs If you are looking for a private as well as comfortable journey, then taking cabs for going from Port Blair to Baratang will be the best option and for obvious reasons, it’ll be a little expensive than the shared trips option. After a few kilometers from Port Blair when you leave the city behind you, and the journey amidst the forest starts, the road towards Jirkatang is quite bumpy for about an hour or more. So a bus journey is not normally preferred. The AC Coaches or tempo travelers may be an option but not those which ply regularly for Baratang. You can book a private cab based on the numbers you are traveling in. The cabs are generally 5-7 seated you can go for Tempo travelers if your group size is 15 or above. You can contact us to get this trip arranged for you or get this arrangement added to your itinerary. 3. By Government ferry from Port Blair Government ferry services are available from Port Blair to Baratang but this ferry doesn’t come back to Port Blair on the same day. So it is not suitable for a day trip. The route of this ferry is such that it sails from Port Blair to Baratang, drops the passengers at Baratang and goes off to Havelock (No waiting time- just touch and go). In case you have a plan to stay at Baratang Island, then you may opt for this option. However, you cannot combine the ferry & cab service, this may become expensive for you. The other way is to return from Baratang in a Government Operate but. However, its uncertain because the availability of Government buses will be known only after reaching Baratang. Hence, such a last-minute surprise can spoil the rest of your trip if you are on a fixed duration holiday. The best and the most convenient way is to avail private cab to Baratang Island . Though buses are also a good option. However, considering the pick up of bus takes places only from designated areas we personally recommend cabs to Baratang Island from Port Blair.

How to go from Port Blair to Baratang?

Baratang Island - Mangrove Forest.

Baratang is located in the center of Middle & South Andaman Islands and is connected to Port Blair by both road and sea, so there are a lot of ways to reach there. The distance between these 2 destinations is 101 KMs which can be covered in 2-3 hours based on the mode of transport.

How to reach Baratang?

People who are planning to visit Baratang and explore the Limestone Caves and Mud Volcano, have to reach Baratang along with the dense tropical forest area spanning for 53 KMs, that comes under the Jarawa Reserve. This calls for an amazing road trip.

To gain entry to the Baratang you will have to get past the guarded check post at the start of the journey. Two-Wheelers are not allowed to get past the check post so the only two options that you will have is to travel via a cab or bus.

The checkpost clearance is done at 6 A.M and 9 A.M, so you will have to leave early, preferably at 4 A.M or 6 A.M from Port Blair, respectively. There are small shops and stalls for refreshments, where you can enjoy some snacks after the road trip.

After passing the checkpost, you can see dense forest surrounding the road from both sides and might be able to spot Jarawas, if you are lucky. Please note that photography, talking and offering food to the Jarawas is strictly prohibited.

Baratang Jetty

As soon as you reach the end of the forest road you will reach the Baratang Jetty, which has another checkpost. Here you can wait for the vehicle ferry to arrive, which will take you to the destinations you came here to visit.

The launch service has also been provided by the Andaman Administration, so you can easily cross the bay and reach the Uttara Jetty and resume your sightseeing.

One Day Trip to Baratang Island: Witnessing Andaman’s Untouched Beauty (2024)

Nestled within the pristine archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Baratang Island beckons travelers with its unspoiled beauty and a day trip filled with natural wonders. Far away from the bustling city life, this remote gem is a sanctuary of ecological diversity, where lush mangroves, limestone caves, and idyllic beaches await those seeking a quick escape into the heart of nature.

I visited Baratang island, with my mother, during my first visit to Andaman and Nicobar islands . It was an island that was suggested by a local and I think a one day trip from Port Blair was totally worth it. Baratang island is a very interesting place where one can see a completely different aspect of Andaman islands.

Where is Baratang Island?

Located in the North and Middle Andaman districts, the Baratang island constitute twelve villages with around 5000 inhabitants, mainly by the Jarawa tribes. The Jarawa people are the local indigenous people of Andaman islands.

Famous for its spectacular beaches and mangrove forests, the Baratang island is also known as Ranchiwalas island. Towards the end of nineteenth century, British sent the Ranchi refugees as labourers to Baratang island to cultivate crops. The labourers settled on the island and made new lives for themselves.

Note: You cannot interact with the Jarawa people as it is not allowed by the government. When we were traveling by taxi to Baratang island, we saw one tribal person by the side of the highway. But unfortunately, no photographs or interaction was allowed.

How to Get to Baratang island?

Baratang island is accessible by a boat from Middle strait jetty. The Middle strait jetty is around 90 kilometres from Port Blair and by road, the journey takes about 2 hours one way.

  • There are bus services between the Jetty and Aberdeen Bazaar in Port Blair and the bus journey takes around 2 hours 30 minutes. The fare (which is minimal) needs to be paid by cash and ensure to take the exact change.
  • The easiest way is also to hire a taxi for the day, where the taxi driver stays with you for the entire day and that way the return journey is covered too. The cost of the one day taxi is around INR 2000.

While you are in Port Blair, make sure to visit the Cellular Jail and hear the stories of our freedom fighters.

Things To Do at Baratang Island

Baratang island is popular for its natural and unique things to see. But a few things to remember before visiting Baratang island are:

  • The only way to get to Baratang island is by a boat. There are speed and local boats available. The speed boat cost around INR 750 per person.
  • The prices may be outdated and ensure to check with individual providers for up to date prices.
  • Taxis can be hired from the hotel reception as they are usually trust worthy.
  • The best time to visit the Baratang island is during the winter season (between the months of October and February). I definitely would not suggest visiting the islands during the summer season as it is extremely hot.
  • Be careful of the crocodiles, especially at mangrove forests. Keep your hands safe and inside the boat and do not keep your hands near the water.
  • There is no entrance fee to visit Baratang island.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as there is a bit of walking around on the island.
  • The Baratang island is closed on Mondays.
  • Talk to the locals and get some insight.
  • There are a few shops on the island where one can purchase lemon juices and some local fresh or packaged food products. Ensure to carry cash to purchase these food items and drinks.
  • Take sufficient water.

Limestone cave

The Limestone cave at Baratang island is one of the largest and deepest caves discovered by humans. Formed by compression of deposits over millions of years, the cave is made up of sedimentary rock called limestone that was originally at the bottom of the ocean. Limestone deposits have different textures and are easily dissolved by rain water.

If possible, hire a local guide to explain you the rock formations.

Mud volcano

One of the unique things you will see in Baratang island is the mud volcano. Till I visited this island, I did not even know there was something called mud volcano.

The mud volcano is created using the natural gases emitted by the decaying organic matter underground. As the gas pushes the mud upwards, it deposits and hardens the ground above. And as the mud oozes and spills out, it grows in size and forms a miniature volcano which is called as the mud volcano.

Mud volcano at Baratang island

Some of the things I learned about the mud volcano after my visit were:

  • Difference between a regular and mud volcano is that the regular volcano erupts molten rocks, chemicals and ash where as mud volcano erupts gases and mud.
  • Mud volcano is cold.
  • The mud volcano has no medicinal benefits and it destroys the vegetation and anything that is in its zone.
  • The outflow of regular volcano is called lava where as the outflow of mud volcano is called mud flow.

Mud volcano at Baratang island

Mangrove forests

Baratang island is home to some amazing mangrove forests. The mangrove trees have small air roots called pneumatophores or aerial roots and they extend upwards from underground roots. During the low tides, these small air roots suck up air and transport it to the lower and living root tissues.

Did you know that the fruits of Mangrove forests are called Vivipores? Some are smooth, pointed and long. They fall vertical and float in the water for certain distance till they are held by mud, which leads to a new generation of a mangrove tree. How fascinating is that!

Closing notes

One day trip to Baratang island from Port Bair is a must for sure. Visiting this side of Andaman islands is a completely different experience than just seeing the pretty and clear beaches of the islands. I highly recommend visiting the Baratang island.

Baratang Island is the Andamans’ best kept secret

Baratang island day trip

The capital of Port Blair is the gateway to the Andamans and its many beautiful islands like Havelock, Ross and Neil Islands. But one would be wrong to say that the Andamans is only about the sun, sea and sands. Venture inland and the Andamans surprises you with its dense rainforests, mangroves, creeks and some of the rarest natural wonders unique to this place. A fitting preview to that is the Baratang Island in the Middle Andamans, which is a haven for nature lovers, birders and those who seek all things wild. Photography enthusiasts will have a field day soaking in sceneries that look straight out of a Natgeo documentary.

A Baratang Island day trip from Port Blair is easily doable and an ideal way to explore this untouched region in the Andamans. Bookmark this ‘ to-do ’ list for your visit.

Baratang Forest

Table of Contents

Land of the Jarawas

You’ll enter the Baratang Island via the Grand Trunk Road, Andamans’ only highway connecting the south to the north. Unlike its name, there is nothing grand about this road. It’s a three hour back breaking journey until you reach Jirkatang, which is the check post to cross the Jarawa tribal reserve. The Jarawas are one of the oldest existing human races in the world , who have shunned interaction with society. Estimates say that only about 250 to 300 Jarawas remain and they still practice hunting and gathering as a means of survival.

The Jarawa tribal reserve is a protected area by the Government; hence tourists are only allowed to enter this region thrice in a day and always in a convoy at a speed limit crossing no more than 40kmph. Throughout the 50km stretch, tourists are not allowed to stop their vehicle or take any photographs and videos. It’s an experience one captures with the eyes and not the lens, as you see the tribes co-exist alongside modern civilisation in the present day world.

Limestone caves

The limestone caves in the Andamans are one of the most prominent attractions in the Baratang Island. The stalactite and stalagmite formations here may look smaller if you’ve visited the limestone caves at the Araku Valley or Meghalaya, but they have a charm of their own. Formed by the compression of over millions of years of gradual deposits of marine life, corals and skeletons; these limestone caves date back to the pre-historic age .

A torch would be a handy friend as you find your way inside the dark and eerie caves with a temperature at least 2 degrees cooler than usual. Brace yourself to identify faces of humans and deities in the limestone formations as the local guide takes you through a brief tour.

Mangroves tunnel

baratang trip from port blair

Over 13% of India’s mangrove forests are in the Andamans and a sizeable number belongs to the Baratang Island. On the way to the limestone caves, one rides on a boat along a creek through a dense mangrove tunnel that looks like a scene straight out of ‘Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull’ . The occasional chirping of the birds and crickets is just the background score you need to complete the picture in your head.

The journey by boat is great for birding and you may even spot salt water crocodiles, idling away along the water’s edge in the mangroves. These reptiles are known to thrive in the marshlands and the inlets near the middle strait jetty at Baratang are conducive to them.

Mud volcanoes

Not only is the Andamans home to the only active volcano in India at Barren Island, but also has the unique mud volcanoes. In the Andamans, 11 mud volcanoes have been reported and eight of them are in the Baratang Island, while three are in Diglipur in Northern Andamans. These mud volcanoes are remnants of the 2004 Tsunami that rocked most of Asia. The effects of that natural disaster can be seen till date, where the earth is letting out trapped hydrocarbon gases in the form of cold mud bubbles in periodic pops.

The mud volcanoes at Baratang are 6km from the jetty. The roads are not in the best of conditions, and one further requires doing a short hike to get there.

Parrot Island

baratang trip from port blair

A small un-peopled island in Baratang is home to one of the world’s largest parrot habitats . Thousands of parakeets roost here in the evenings and leave the next morning only to return again in the evening, trimming and perfectly pruning the forest during this cycle.

The Parrot Island is an experience in itself, where these birds fill the sky every evening making for one of the best sunsets you’ll ever see. Birding enthusiasts from across the world often come visiting the island to catch a glimpse of this spectacular marvel.

Boats to the Parrot Island start only after 4pm, so an overnight stay in Baratang is suggested.

Baratang Island day trip guide

The Baratang Island is 90km from Port Blair and regular bus services are available from the bus terminal at Aberdeen Bazaar. The journey takes approximately three hours by bus.

An ideal way for you to do the Baratang island day trip would be to start by 4am from Port Blair and reach back in time for the last convoy before the Jarawa tribal forest reserve gates close at 6pm.

Where to stay – Port Blair hotels

Port Blair was mainly a gateway for us to enter the island and move onwards to Havelock and Diglipur. We did, however, spend one night in Port Blair where we stayed at the Aashiaanaa Residency Inn . The rooms are very basic but ideal for the price you pay of about 700 Rs. per night. They have a restaurant too, in the adjacent building and the property is centrally located, so that’s a plus.

Other hotel suggestions in Port Blair –

Megapode Resort is a Government tourist hotel with a nice location and good reviews.

Fortune Resort Bay Island is great if you’re in the mood to splurge.

Baratang Island is a year-round destination, as it has a tropical monsoon climate, with hot and humid weather, and abundant rainfall. However, the best time to visit Baratang Island depends on your preferences and expectations, as different seasons offer different experiences and challenges.

October to March

The best time to visit Baratang Island is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and dry, and the ferries are available and frequent. This is the peak season for tourism, as you can enjoy the attractions and activities on the island and its nearby islands, without any hassle or interruption. The temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C, and the rainfall is minimal. The sky is clear and the sea is calm, which makes the boat rides and the beach visits more enjoyable and safe. This is also the best time to watch the parrots at parrot island, as they flock to the island in large numbers, and create a spectacular sight at sunset.

However, the downside of visiting Baratang Island in this season is that it is also the most crowded and expensive time, as many tourists and travelers flock to the island to escape the winter chill. You will have to book your accommodation, transportation, and tour in advance, as they are in high demand and limited supply. You will also have to deal with the crowds and the queues at the attractions and the ferry points, which can affect your experience and mood.

April to June

The second-best time to visit Baratang Island is from April to June, when the weather is hot and humid, and the ferries are less frequent and reliable. This is the off-season for tourism, as you can enjoy the attractions and activities on the island and its nearby islands, with less crowd and cost. The temperature ranges from 25°C to 35°C, and the rainfall is moderate. The sky is partly cloudy and the sea is slightly rough, which makes the boat rides and the beach visits more adventurous and thrilling. This is also the best time to visit the mud volcano, as it is more active and eruptive in this season.

However, the downside of visiting Baratang Island in this season is that it is also the most uncomfortable and risky time, as the heat and the humidity can cause dehydration and exhaustion. You will have to carry enough water and sunscreen, and wear light and breathable clothes. You will also have to check the weather and the ferry availability before you plan your trip, as they can change or cancel due to the unpredictable weather conditions.

July to September

The least recommended time to visit Baratang Island is from July to September, when the weather is wet and windy, and the ferries are rare and uncertain. This is the low season for tourism, as you can enjoy the attractions and activities on the island and its nearby islands, with more difficulty and danger. The temperature ranges from 22°C to 32°C, and the rainfall is heavy. The sky is cloudy and the sea is stormy, which makes the boat rides and the beach visits more challenging and risky. This is also the worst time to visit the limestone caves and the parrot island, as they are closed or inaccessible due to the high tide and the low visibility.

The only upside of visiting Baratang Island in this season is that it is also the most serene and green time, as the rain and the wind bring freshness and beauty to the island. You can enjoy the lush and vibrant vegetation, the soothing and refreshing breeze, and the occasional and stunning rainbow. You can also get the best deals and discounts on the accommodation, transportation, and tour, as they are in low demand and high supply.

Life is a Vacation

Stories about travel and living, day trip to limestone cave & mud volcano in baratang, andaman.

Andaman is a natural paradise and the beauty of its forests, mangroves and caves often becomes secondary to the white sand beaches. I decided on a day trip to Baratang Island from Port Blair for the limestone caves and mud volcano which was a 12 hour journey to and fro. At hindsight, I wish I had planned better and stayed over night in Baratang Island.

Port Blair to Baratang – 3 Step Journey through 100 kms

Port Blair to Jirketang : Approx 46 kms by road

This stretch can be done in about a little more than an hour by car. The state bus takes about 1.5 hours. We started around 3.30 am in the morning and reached around 4.30am to join the long queue of vehicles with passengers waiting for the 6am convoy through the Jarawa Forest Reserve. All vehicles registering before 5.45 am are allowed to join the convoy which is led by a state bus with armed forest guards on board. There is a temple and a few food joints selling idli/vada/tea/coffee for tourists.

Jirketang to Middle Straits: 47 kms through Jarawa Reserve Forest Area in Convoys leaving at 6am, 9am, 12noon and 3pm only

baratang trip from port blair

The forest ride is beautiful in the early hours of the morning and you may spot a few Jarawa tribesmen going abut their life on the way. They are of African descent and survive on fruits, honey, pigs and fish. A few years ago tourist vehicles would stop and interact with Jarawa Tribes offering them spicy food which led to disease and death among the Jarawas due to infection. The Jarawas are taking baby steps towards civilization, wearing clothes, attempting to converse in Hindi and opening up to medical treatment in hospitals when needed

Baratang Sightseeing:

As soon as we got off at the Baratang (Neelambar) Jetty; our driver procured the ticket and permit for travel to Lime Stone Cave and Mud Volcano at Rs 850. Lime Stone Caves are accessed after a speedboat ride while mud volcano is a few kms away from the jetty

Baratang Island Mud Volcano

baratang trip from port blair

Mud Volcanoes are common in Middle & North Andaman areas generally created by gases emitted from decaying underground organic matter. Slushy mud comprising sandstone, rocks and other material is continously pushed upwards and settles on the groud; sometimes the push force may be very strong to result in eruption of several feet. The presence of mud volcanoes is indicative of an earthquake prone tectonically unstable area.

We managed to cross over to Middle Straits by 12 noon and joined the 12.30pm convoy returning to Port Blair around 3pm.

Baratang Parrot Island

This trip is done between 4pm and 5pm in the evening when the parrots are returning to their nests. The boatride to the island off Baratang may be Rs 2000 and it works if there is a group

  • The Day Trip for 12-14 hours scrambling from the wee hours of the morning is not worth the sites but the journey only
  • Start from PortBlair latest by 7am to avail the 9am Forest convoy from Jirketang
  • Reach Baratang Island latest by 11.30am. Complete the limestone cave ride by 1pm and then post lunch proceed to mud volcano.
  • Check into the guest house or resort (Dew Dale)
  • Leave for the Parrot Island at 4pm and stay overnight
  • Next morning take the first ferry to Middle Straits to join the 6.30 am convoy towards Port Blair. You will reach Port Blair by 9.30 am which gives time for city tour/ proceed to Wandoor and Jolly Buoy or take the afternoon ferry to Havelock
  • 25 Kms away is Gandhi Ghat in Kadamtala to cross Humphrey Straits
  • 71 kms away is Rangat (Dhaninallah; Aamkunj Beach)
  • 140 kms away is Mayabunder (Karmatang Beach)
  • 203 kms away is Diglipur (Saddle Peak ; Ross & Smith Island)
  • Andaman Trunk Road passing through the Jarawa Forest Reserve is under litigation in Supreme Court due to the sensitive route. As advised by the jury, this arterial road that connects Middle Andaman to South Andaman needs to be closed to protect the Jarawa tribes. An alternative ferry route is being developed  from Port Blair to Baratang which is expected to be operational shortly.
  • Budget Trip – Travel by Bus at Rs 50 per head and avail the sightseeing trips by speed boat and car at Rs 850 per head. Bus leaves from Aberdeen Bazar, Port Blair
  • Contract car for the entire trip can be between Rs 7000- Rs 8000 based on capacity of the vehicle

Port Blair with Best of Andaman

Dos and Don’ts

Travelling to Baratang Island is not an easy task as you pass by a tribal zone that is protected by the government. Here are few dos and don’ts to follow while visiting Baratang islands:

  • The vehicles have to leave in convoys. Do not miss the convoy timing or there are chances that you might be stuck. (Timings: 6:30, 07:00, 07:30, 08:00, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30).
  • Offering food items to tribal people is strictly prohibited, as it is fatal to their health.
  • Interacting or taking pictures of the tribes is strictly prohibited.
  • Carry sunscreen lotion and mosquito replant lotions.
  • Wear something in cotton and loosely fit as the weather is humid and you might have to climb up or down huge stairs.
  • Wear good walking shoes as it involves a good amount of walking around the island.
  • Carry an umbrella with you.
  • There are toilets with all facilities at Jirkatang check post.
  • For night halt, a special permit is needed from the UT Administration.

Best Places to Visit & Things to Do in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

4 AM: Transit 1 – Port Blair to Jirkatang

Jirkatang

For one day sightseeing tour, you need to start your journey early in the morning. It is best to cross the check post at the earliest so that you get enough time to explore the island. The Andaman Grand Trunk road, which connects Port Blair to South, Middle and North Andaman, takes you to the convoy at the beginning of Jirkatang village, a small village said to be the home of the Jarwas (local tribe of Andaman). There are toilets where you can freshen up and several tea stalls where you can have your breakfast. The stalls serve south Indian cuisine and are delectable.

5:45 AM: A Short Halt at the Convoy Belt

The first convoy begins at 6:30 a.m., which leaves you with sufficient time to freshen up and explore the local stalls. If you want a complete view of the convoy, walk up to the temple at the hilltop that is just 5 minutes away from the Restroom. Charge yourself with some lip-smacking Vada (South-Indian savoury fried snack) and Tea before the long journey.

Most Famous Islands to Visit in Andaman & Nicobar

6:30 AM: Transit 2 – Jikaratang to Nilambar Jetty

As the convoy begins, security personnel for the safety of both travellers and tribes escort each vehicle. As you pass through the Jarawa Tribe reserve area, you will see several tribal people standing in groups along with a forest officer staring at the vehicles passing by. The tribes are usually unpredictable and so you are not allowed to click photos or offer food to them as they might attack you. It is a punishable offence to do so and you will be charged with a heavy fine.

However, it is a once in a lifetime experience to see how beautifully the tribes and the civilised (forest police) are coexisting in harmony.

P.S.: You have to be alert to see them, as it will be hard to notice them sitting behind the bushes.

How to Make Your Andaman Familly Holiday Memorable?

9 AM: Nilambar Jetty to Baratang Island

Baratang Island Andaman India

After an adventurous ride through the tribal reserve, you reach the Nilamber Jetty. From here, you board your ferry that will take you to the Baratang Island. The 20-minute ferry ride is not much pleasant. The ferry is rather crowded and the smell of the fuel will burn your lungs until black. On the other hand, you will enjoy the impeccable view of the creek and the dense mangrove forests.

9:50 AM: Mud Volcano

Mud Volcano Baratang

As you set your foot on the island, you see a fresh and tropical side of the Andaman Islands. Baratang Island is the home of India’s only active Mud Volcano. The sight might not be appealing at first, however, to see a natural process in occurrence is a new thing to experience altogether.

Mud Volcano

It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the volcano and another 15 minutes to see the place. The site is approachable by road from Nilambur Jetty. You reach the Jarawa Creek and then walk for 300 meters to reach the Mud volcano. The walk to the Volcano is pleasantly refreshing. The stairway that leads to the Volcano passes through a jungle where you might encounter several wildflowers and mushrooms that might hold your interest.

Natural gases emitted by decaying organic matter underground creates the mud volcano. You can see the mud being pushed upwards by the gas and bubbles forming around it. There is also a large gas chamber that collects all the natural gas for experimentation and other use.

Heritage Sites to Explore in Andaman

10:50 AM: Walk around the Island

Walk Around Baratang Island

If you are not lucky enough to get the boat on time to the Limestone cave then worry not! Just take a walk around the town, which by the way is also one of the top things to do on your holiday in Andaman. This will give you a brief idea of the lifestyle of the locals living there. The island is occupied majorly by Keralite and so the local food served is mainly South-Indian. You can also visit the beautiful old church next to the jetty.

Churches-in-Baratang

11:30 AM: Limestone Cave

Limestone-Cave-Baratang

The journey to the Limestone caves is completed in two phases. A bumpy ride on Dongi (boat) from the Baratang Jetty takes you through dense mangroves forest to reach the starting point of the trek and then you walk for approx. 3 km to reach the caves. The walk is pleasant as you pass through the walkways made by cutting through dense forest and large stones.

Before entering the cave, you can refuel yourself with some freshly prepared lemonade served by a local that will refresh your soul. The lemons are grown there by the locals and are so sweet that you don’t require any artificial sugar to sweeten the drink and hence is a must-try.

The surrounding of the cave is pleasant and the temperature within the cave is cooler than the outside temperature. The best part is to observe the walls of the Limestone cave taking up beautiful shape naturally like of a shell or of the Indian God, Ganesha.

If you are lucky enough then you might also get a glimpse of the mighty crocodile near the swamps.

1:00 PM: Journey back home

Start your journey back to Port Blair, as the convoy gates remain open only until 2:30 p.m.

If you plan to spend some more time at Baratang Island, it is best to reach the island by night as this will save you from the early morning hassle and you will be able to visit the Parrot Island as well. The island is indeed a paradise on earth and home to many beautiful beaches, green parrots and parakeets.

P.S.: Don’t forget to take your cameras along as you never know what you spot.

Is Baratang Island somewhere you’ve recently been for your adventure break? Share your experiences below in the comments – we’d love to hear from you.

Travelling helps us relax, and rejuvenate and it broadens the horizon of our vision. That’s why people are so keen to travel these days. But amidst all these beautiful reels and posts of marvellous places, you might get confused about which places to explore next and all about the place like how to reach, what to explore, things to do there, where to stay and so many more. Let’s put an end to your list of questions. This article is going to tell you everything you need to know about a very beautiful place, Baratang island.

Baratang island is part of the Andaman islands under the Indian administration. It is 110 km north of Port Blair. This island offers you a large range of natural wonders; from large limestone caves to dense mangrove creeks. You get to explore tiny mud volcanoes as well as tidal swamp forests. This island has everything to offer you, from Forests to oceans.

The Best Places to visit on Baratang Island

Baratang island offers you a lot of natural wonders that you must visit if you ever go there. As mentioned earlier,  it has a variety of things from jungles to mangroves to caves and of course several beaches. As it is a less visited tourist spot, you can take advantage of fewer crowds and visit the most amazing wonders of nature.

Limestone Caves:

Dark when you enter, but as soon as you turn on your flashlight, you will be amazed to see the wonderful creations of nature. Different structures have been created when CO2 is dissolved in water. The interesting shapes taken by limestones will make you go like “Woow ”. But to experience this amazing architecture of nature, you are advised to wear a good pair of shoes because to reach the caves, you may require a lot of walking or trekking etc.

Mud Volcanoes:

With no ticket fee, you can see the mud volcanoes any way you want. These volcanoes are formed by the ejection of gasses and liquids from the interior of the earth. Major gasses like methane carbon dioxide and nitrogen are released during a volcanic eruption.  These eject everything in a semi-solid state. You may think this anaesthetic mud volcano is not worth your time,  but this is the only known mud volcano in entire south Asia, so do give it a try.

Parrot island:

Baratang island is heaven for bird watchers. So many varieties of birds you get to see here. You get the most beautiful sight during dusk on this island. No ticket fee and it is open for everyone till sunset. You should not miss the view of birds flying over the orange skies which looks unreal. You can also go for boat rides to see the mangrove forest here.

Baludera beach:

This is an isolated beach and one of the most beautiful beaches in Andaman. Its isolation has preserved its natural beauty. If you want to escape the crowd of tourists on famous beaches and experience virgin nature, this beach is for you. It þhas a low tide and is comparatively safer but you should be careful wherever you visit.

Things to do on Baratang Island

As mentioned earlier,  Baratang island is all about the limestone caves, never explored beaches and mud volcanoes. So the best thing you can do is explore and experience those.

Apart from this, you can go for adventures like Kayaking, Mangrove Safari, canoeing, sea walking etc. You can also go for boat rides to your favourite island, and trek to the limestone caves and mud volcanoes.

Baratang island is not about doing so many things and making life again about ticking off certain activities.  It is about relaxing, spending time with virgin nature, appreciating the wonderful creations of nature and rejuvenating.

Where to Stay on Baratang Island

Staying overnight on Baratang island is very expensive and tricky. There are not many private hotels and resorts. There are some governmental guest houses but these are reserved for locals and government officials. But if you want to stay here, you need to book it months in advance from Port Blair.  Walk-ins are not allowed.

The only private resort is “Dew Dale” which is a little far from the city, but it has clean and spacious rooms; so a good option if you want to spend a night on Baratang island. Due to the unavailability of private resorts and hotels, it is better to go for a one-day trip to Baratang island and come back after the evening sightseeing on parrot island. You will reach the capital late at night and can have a cheaper and easier stay in the city.

Talking about food, there are no fancy restaurants here. But you can get local food in so many smaller eateries, food stalls etc. Also, you can have south Indian and Bengali dishes, and chai stalls are almost on every corner. So food will not be a problem, unlike the stay.

How to reach Baratang island

As mentioned earlier, Baratang island is 110 km north of the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar islands, Port Blair. This island is not as well developed as other islands of the union territory. It experiences a rural way of life to date. So getting here can be a little tricky and expensive.  But the natural wonders like caves, virgin beaches, bird watching experiences this island offers are worth the journey.

The most convenient way to reach Baratang island is by private vehicle. It can be a private car or a reserved AC bus. Do not think of going by two-wheelers, because these are not allowed in Baratang. But if you are looking for the cheapest way to reach there, it is by government bus from Port Blair.

You have to travel through Andaman Trunk Road. You have to also pass through a convoy that is one short vehicle ferry connection among the islands. It is a 4-hour ride from the capital city. It can be exhausting but the green forests and blue ocean make it interesting and worth taking to Baratang Island Day Trip

The one important thing you should keep in mind is that while going through the ATRs, you may notice some Jarawas, are the indigenous tribes of Andaman. You are not allowed to interact with them in any way; be it by giving them food, clicking pictures, talking to them etc.

Best Time To visit Baratang island

Baratang island is a tropical place, so its temperature ranges between 22-32°c. Summers here are not extremely hot but due to humidity, the heat hits hard. During the monsoon, the island experiences heavy rain. So looking at this, winters are the best season to travel to Baratang island. Winter here is so calm and relaxing. Negligible rainfall and calm sea waters welcome you to the island. With the relaxed water, you can also go for so many adventurous activities like scuba diving, canoeing and sea walking etc. These activities will fill you up with courage, confidence and a unique lifetime experience.

In the winter season, not only does the rainfall decrease but also the weather turns out to be pleasing and refreshing. The temperature remains between 20-26°c  giving the tourists an extremely comfortable stay on the island.

In addition to the winter season, this island also attracts a specific group of tourists during the summer. During the hot season, the island becomes a rejuvenating experience for everyone who wishes to bask in the bright sunlight. The great combination of sand and glorious sunlight during the summer mornings never fails to attract a bunch of tourists even during the hot summer.

Even in the monsoon, some people get attracted to visit this Baratang island because of the hazy and cloudy atmosphere created around it. This resembles a pretty romantic getaway and enjoying this beautiful romantic weather amidst the blue ocean and green forest attracts a lot of couples from the nearby areas of the island.

Although winter is considered to be the best time to visit Baratang island because of the calm weather condition, the island amazes you whenever you visit.

Conclusion:

Baratang island should be on your list any day you are planning a trip to Andamans . This has the most wonderful places created by natural forces like the caves. Exploring all these will make you appreciate nature and natural forces. This island is a great place to relax, escaping from all the chaos we face in our city life.

Away from the chaotic lifestyle of the city, this island offers you a peaceful and comparatively rural way of living which is budget friendly and a treat to your soul. So, plan your next trip to Baratang island keeping all the information given above in mind.

Part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands off the coast of India , Baratang Island is one of the best parts of a trip to the islands. Here you get to see wild nature as well as its beauty. An Andaman trip would be incomplete without a trip to Baratang and Jirkatang.

Get in [ edit ]

It is about 90 km away from Port Blair . Regular bus services are available from STS Bus Terminal, Aberdeen Bazar. Journey takes about 2 hrs and 30 minutes from Port Blair to Middle Strait and the fare is just ₹45. The journey is in 2 phases - P.Blair to Jirkatang (40 km, 1 hr 15 mins) and then Jirkatang to Baratang (49 km, 1 hr 15 mins, no overtake zone through Jarwa Reserve Forest). From Nilambur Jetty at middle strait ferry

baratang trip from port blair

services are available for Baratang Island. Ferry fare is only ₹3/- and it takes about 15 minutes to reach Baratang from Nilambur Jetty.

It is advisable to take a conducted tour of the Baratang islands, if you want to return on the same day. In that case you will miss seeing Parrot Islands. Once you start from Port Blair early morning at around 04:00, the first halt is at Jirkatang (40 km from Port Blair on road). At Jirkatang you will get a forest/police check post.

baratang trip from port blair

Just opposite to the check post on the other side of the road is a temple (just for a landmark).

baratang trip from port blair

From here starts a stretch of 49 km forest (Jarwah Reserve Forest), where you cannot halt your vehicle or walk on foot or take snaps/video. On the other end of the Jarwah Reserve forest is Middle strait jetty. The jetty will take you to the other side of the strait in about 15 minutes. Here you have reached Baratang islands.

This is one of the most exciting part of journey, where you will see the tribes (Jarwah). They are short height, black in complexion, with reddish eyes. They feed on roasted pig meat mainly. Fish and fruits being the other part of their diet. The Government of India has taken every step to ensure that no one interferes with the Jarwahs' freedom. Offering food items to Zarawah is strictly prohibited; once when they were offered food (generally fried and spicy as other Indians normally eat), some of the people in the tribe started dying. The Forest Department (Andaman Adi Janjati Samiti) also provides them with clothes. On your way to Middle strait jetty you might still find a lot of people among the tribes, particularly young men, asking for food. Please do not pay any heed. Always speak to your driver before doing anything.

Interacting with the Jarwahs is strictly prohibited as is taking photos of them. There are stories as well as facts of tribes attacking tourists/convoys with bows and arrows and harassing trespassers. So please keep away from them and enjoy the experience.

The vehicles have to leave in convoys. There are 8 convoy throughout the day from Jirkatang (6:30, 07:00, 07:30, 08:00, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30). So please take care of the timings. You cannot cross the forest unless you are in one of the convoys. At Jirkatang check post there is a toilet/bathroom with all facilities. So if you have left from you hotel/lodge at around 04:00 you will reach there by 05:15 and you can get fresh and alight your bus/vehicle by 06:30 before the 1st convoy leaves for Baratang. In the convoy 2 wheelers/bicycles are not allowed. Only 4 wheelers are allowed. The 1st vehicle in the convoy is always a bus, with 1-2 armed policemen. And the Jarwahs fear the forest police. It is simply amazing to see how two worlds (civilised and uncivilised) coexist in this reserve forest with some amount of discipline. Hats off to the Andaman Adi Janjati Samiti.

This is the only road connecting to North Andaman to places like Kadamtala (28 km from Baratang jetty), Rangat (71 km from Baratang jetty), Mayabunder (141 km from Baratang jetty), Diglipur (203 km from Baratang jetty). Here it is interesting to see how buses/vehicles alight the jetty to reach either side of the middle strait.

Itineraries [ edit ]

Some points to note :

  • Do not waste time in visiting everything what the locals – other tourists – travel guide trumpets. Covering each of the points is a long journey either by boat or road – in whichever the case the journey can be extremely time and energy consuming.
  • The places like limestone caves, mud volcano are boring and disappointing. Unless you have specific interest in it, do not bother to waste a long day which would start at 03:40 while you plan to visit these two places.

At the same time visiting Baratang can be more memorable if the trip is taken with a night stay at Baratang. The early morning journey which generally starts at 03:40 in the morning can easily be avoided. The main reason for any tourist opting for the early morning hectic trip is only because of improper guidance from the Port Blair tour operators. There are regular bus services to Baratang. Book your seat in any bus with your convenient timings and visit Baratang Island. APWD guest House, Forest guest House and Panchayat Guest house are some of the places for the night halt. The only good private property at Baratang is Dew Dale Resorts. By doing so you can also add Parrot Island trip at Baratang in your itinerary, which is really a breathtaking experience. Do visit Baratang Island which is one of the most beautiful parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands but only with a night halt to avoid the hectic 03:40 trips.

Do [ edit ]

Eat [ edit ].

At Baratang jetty there are 2-3 restaurants, food is OK. The food is mainly fried fish such as Mackerel fis.

Some people marvel at the science behind it while some consider it as a great natural wonder. You cannot miss this place if you are really willing to see something rare in the Andaman Islands. Imagine yourself getting close to volcanoes! You can even hike and walk over these volcanic lines around the island. Formed several years ago, these are nature’s mysterious creations. They do not erupt hot molten lava but instead release natural gases like methane as explosions. Baratang Island has emerged as a preferred tourist destination among travellers and adventure enthusiasts owing to this alluring site.

It is the only known example of mud volcanoes in the country. These have erupted sporadically. The eruptions in 2005 believed to have been associated with the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Before that, the major eruption was recorded on February 18, 2003. The locals refer to the mud volcano as ‘jalki’. There are other volcanoes in the area as well. Narcondam Island volcano is one that has been classified as a dormant volcano by the Geological Survey of India. The islands of Ritchie’s Archipelago lie fourteen kilometers to the east. Port Blair, the capital town of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is located around 45 kilometers from the southern tip of Baratang Island.

Baratang Island is slightly less developed, but still a wonderful natural delight. It is not a major tourist hub because not everyone knows about this hidden gem of the Andaman Islands. There are no advanced tourist facilities, fancy restaurants, or luxury accommodations. The majority of the locals do not speak English. However, all this further enhances the beauty and natural glow of the place. Fortunately, the island hasn’t been commercialised yet and it is in some way a very good thing.

To reach this natural marvel, just take a short ride from the Nilambur Jetty and walk for 160 meters up a rocky path. You will see small muddy craters that have been created by natural gasses emitted by decaying organic matter present underground. It pushes the mud upwards. It is not that much of a visually gorgeous sight as usually, there is just a small or dried bubbling puddle of mud. But Baratang Island is one of the very few places across the world where these volcanoes are found. That’s the reason why you should visit such a unique place. As many as eleven mud volcanoes are reported in the Andaman Islands and out of these, a total of eight are located in Middle Andaman and Baratang Island. The remaining three are in North Andaman.

How to Reach Baratang

Table of content, how to reach baratang.

The best way to reach Baratang is by taking a government bus, a private AC bus, or by hiring a private vehicle/car. Two-wheelers are not allowed. You will have to travel through the ‘Andaman Trunk Road’ (ATR) and move in a convoy with occasional short ferry connections among the islands. This is a four-hour bumpy ride but the lush jungles and blue waters can make the ride quite interesting.

One point to note here is that one can spot a few Jarawas on the way. The ATR cuts through the jungle that is home to the indigenous Jarawa tribe and many tribals people wait on the sides of the road to cross to the other side. Interacting with them, giving them food, gifts, or even clicking their pictures is NOT allowed. One can be fined and imprisoned for the same.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

baratang trip from port blair

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

1. Shared Trips To Baratang

By Government Bus

There are shared trips in Govt NON AC Buses.

By Private AC Coaches

Just like the Govt Bus, the private buses also start from Port Blair early in the morning.

2. By Private Cabs

If you are looking for a private as well as comfortable journey, then taking cabs for going from Port Blair to Baratang will be the best option and for obvious reasons, it’ll be a little expensive than the shared trips option.

3. By Government ferry from Port Blair

Government ferry services are available from Port Blair to Baratang but this ferry doesn’t come back to Port Blair on the same day.

The best and the most convenient way is to avail private cab to Baratang Island. Though buses are also a good option. However, considering the pick up of bus takes places only from designated areas we personally recommend cabs to Baratang Island from Port Blair.

Best time to visit Baratang Island

Winter (October to February): With negligible rainfall and relaxed sea waters, winter is the best season of the year to pay a visit to Baratang Island. When the waters are calm and composed, many adventurous activities such as snorkeling, sea walking, scuba diving, and canoeing can be practiced with ease. Along with the descent in rainfall, the climate also turns pleasing and refreshing. Winter season experiences a dip in temperatures, with them hovering somewhere between 20°C and 26°C. Visitors will feel extreme comfort while visiting the tourist spots during this time of the year. It is a perfect time to bask in the alluring glory of this heavenly island.
