Great experience

No problems with round transport and hike was short yet extremely satisfying, with an excellent view of the sunrise and the lake at the top where we were given some coffee. 100% recommended but would suggest backpackers to book the tour from Atitlan as it is easily half the price and they are always available!

Google

I used company for transportation to San Pedro and back to Antigua, good trip, professional, had stop as well

We used these guys for the Indian Nose hike. The guides were good (not part of the company) but the driver was an absolute tool. Our ticket included travel back to our hotel. He knowingly drove past it and dropped us off ages away near his house. Cheers mate

If you’re looking for the easiest, most convenient and smoothest way to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, keep reading!

Lake Atitlan is one of the best places to visit in Guatemala. It’s a popular place to flock to for locals and foreigners looking to relax by the magical lake, rejuvenate and take in some nature.

From the beautiful blue waters to the small-town feels and vibrant culture all around the lake towns, Lake Atitlan must be included in your Guatemala itinerary!

QUICK ANSWER: How To Get From Antigua To Lake Atitlan

The best way to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is by booking a shared van shuttle. Why?

  • It’s easy to book via WhatsApp.
  • It’s less crowded than taking a chicken bus.
  • It’s still very cost-effective.

Most hostels, hotels or Airbnbs can recommend various shuttle services. There are so many companies to choose from – it’s pretty easy to find one and they are all relatively the same price.

We booked with Benjy Travel Tours and it cost us 100 quetzals ($13 USD) per person to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. It was an easy journey and they picked us up from our hotel/Airbnb. The best way to book a ride with Benjy Tours is via WhatsApp. Their number for bookings is: +502 5696 6252.

What’s The Journey Like From Antigua To Lake Atitlan?

As Antigua digital nomads , it’s such a normal thing to escape to Lake Atitlan on the weekends to enjoy nature, completely relax and live life at a slower pace than Antigua. Thankfully, it’s so easy to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan – after you’ve made the journey once it’s a piece of cake to do it again and again!

antigua cathedral guatemala

However…Guatemala isn’t known to have the smoothest roads. What do I mean by this?

While driving from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, you can expect a bunch of bumps on the insanely crooked roads (like the one pictured below!). It can get pretty crazy and we definitely recommend packing some Dramamine in case you easily get motion sickness.

Apart from that, the journey from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is pretty easy (especially if you go with any of the options below). Whichever option you go with, they will:

  • Pick you up from your hostel or Airbnb
  • Simply hop in and sit tight for the drive and
  • Drop you off at a specific town around the lake

That’s it – you’ll be at Lake Atitlan!

3x Easy Ways To From Antigua To Lake Atitlan: Transportation Options

There are several ways to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan but I won’t bother sharing the difficult transportation options that could give you a headache, stress or even worse – get you lost!

aerial view antigua guatemala

No one wants that when your destination is meant to be a relaxing and rejuvenating place. Here are the 3 best options to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan with ease.

1. Take a Shared Van Shuttle From Antigua To Lake Atitlan

  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Cost: 100 Q ($13 USD)
  • Type: Shared

Taking a shared van shuttle is the easiest, safest and most convenient way to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. We personally chose this transport option for ourselves and highly recommend that every person take a shared van shuttle.

van shuttle antigua to lake atitlan

Why book a shared van shuttle service?

  • You can easily book most van shuttles via WhatsApp. If you don’t already have an account, I suggest creating one because most businesses in Latin America and Asia use it for booking.
  • It’s the cheapest option on this list. For our direct shuttle from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, we only paid 100 quetzals ($13 USD) per person at the time of writing.
  • The booking process is quick and simple. All you have to do is message them via WhatsApp. The good companies usually reply within the hour (usually faster).
  • You don’t have to book too far in advance. Have the sudden urge to go to Lake Atitlan? With the shuttle service, you can book as late as the day before you leave!
  • It’s a direct journey. If you don’t want to have multiple stops and make transfers – the shuttle service will get you from your hotel/Airbnb to the top towns around the lake. No need to get on or off the shuttle, just sit back and relax! Note: While it’s a direct journey, there will be a short toilet break at a gas station in case you need to go in the middle of the journey.

Most shared van shuttle services only go to specific towns (other towns are just too hard to drive through). The most popular drop-off points are Panajachel, San Pedro or San Juan. If you’re not staying in any of these towns, you can easily catch a lancha (boat taxi) from any of these places.

The Shared Van Shuttle Service We Recommend

We booked with Benjy Travels because our local host on Airbnb recommended them. We had a great experience with them – they pick you up on time and you just have to wait for a blue van to come by. It’s usually a 12-14 seater van and there’s enough space for your luggage (we had 2 suitcases so you’ll be fine). You don’t need to pay in advance but instead, it’s easy to pay cash once you arrive at your destination. Through this method, you don’t even need to go to an official store – it’s all done through WhatsApp!

Benjy Travel Tours has several different routes including:

  • Antigua to Lake Atitlan

Once you’ve got their number, it’s easy to just keep re-booking them for travel around Guatemala. Their daily schedule from Antigua to Lake Atitlan (San Pedro drop-off) runs at:

If you’d like to book with Benjy Travels, their WhatsApp number is +502 5696 6252. You can easily use the Google Translate app to write a message and/or read their messages in Spanish!

Popular hostels like Selina Antigua or Tropicana also offer daily shuttles to and from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. You can simply go to their location and request to book shuttle transport.

If you want a cost-effective, direct and less-crowded transport option to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, the shared van shuttle is your best option!

2. Hire A Private Taxi / Driver From Antigua To Lake Atitlan

  • Duration: 2.5-3 hours
  • Cost: 600-1,000 Q ($80-$130 USD)
  • Type: Private

This is another easy way to get directly from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. You won’t need to stop along the way (unless you want to) and you can tell them whichever town you want to go to.

lake atitlan guatemala

This is the most expensive way to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. We were shocked at how much they charge for a private car with a driver in Guatemala. We got several quotes and they were all over $80 USD. Granted – you do get the driver for the day which is best for a roundtrip journey but if it’s a one-way journey, it’s simply not worth the money.

The Private Driver We Recommend

We booked a private driver to pick my mom up from the airport to Lake Atitlan and it cost us $120 USD for the day. This driver (Tony) was recommended by our friend and here’s the number if you want to book with him: +502 5870 9747.

You can simply post on one of the popular Guatemala Facebook groups and ask for a private driver. Many people will recommend their trusted drivers and some drivers will also respond directly to your post.

3. Take An Uber From Antigua To Lake Atitlan

  • Cost: 300-500 Q ($40-$65 USD)

Ordering an Uber from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is probably the easiest option on this list, however…

It’s hit-and-miss whether you’ll get a driver who’s willing to go all the way to Lake Atitlan. You might struggle to get a driver to accept the request and if they do – they also tend to negotiate with you before they actually take you to Lake Atitlan.

uber ride from antigua to lake atitlan

If you do get an Uber to take you from Antigua to Lake Atitlan for the price given by Uber without any troubles – lucky you! It’s fairly straightforward and a pretty safe option for people.

Uber is widely used throughout Antigua – whenever we felt too lazy to walk across the city, we took an Uber and it cost us less than $2 USD to get around Antigua, Guatemala. That’s why it’s so common for people to just use Uber to also get to Lake Atitlan.

The travel times for all 3 options are fairly similar and as I said – I’m not recommending any complicated transport options (that can often take longer than the usual time). It’s important to always account for traffic because it can get clogged along the way.

How To Get Back From Lake Atitlan To Antigua?

That’s easy!

Just take any of the 2 options:

  • shared shuttle
  • private driver

Uber is not available anywhere throughout the lake villages, which means you’re not likely to get someone to pick up the request.

You can use the same shared shuttle service to get you back to Antigua from Lake Atitlan. It’ll cost the same (around 100Q | $13 USD) and they will pick you up at your hotel/Airbnb and then drop you off at the main plaza in Antigua, Parque Central. You can pay cash once you get off the van in Antigua.

parque central plaza mayor antigua guatemala

The private driver is much more expensive but if you prefer it – simply book with the same person that took you from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. It might be more expensive than your original journey because the driver will likely need to drive from Antigua to pick you up and then head back!

Bottom Line: Take The Easy Journey From Antigua To Lake Atitlan

There are many ways to travel from Antigua to Lake Atitlan but that doesn’t mean you’ll have the smoothest, most convenient trip!

The easiest way to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is to take a shared van shuttle. You can simply book via WhatsApp as late as the day before your travels and pay in cash. No need to worry about transfers or bank payments! It’s also the cheapest option on this list at only 100Q ($13 USD) per person.

Lake Atitlan is the deepest lake in all of Central America. With 12 different Mayan villages surrounding this lake, it’s easy to spend a weekend or even months soaking up the nature and slow pace of life. The travel is fairly easy from Antigua and that’s what makes it a must-visit on any Guatemala itinerary!

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is lake atitlan from antigua.

Lake Atitlan is around 2.5 to 3 hours away from Antigua. The closest drop-off point is Panajachel and it takes a little longer (maybe 30-60 mins) to get to San Pedro La Laguna. Depending on the traffic, it might take you longer (around 4 hours), but this is usually the duration you can expect if you travel in the morning.

When is the best time to travel from Antigua to Lake Atitlan?

Always travel in the morning!

We recommend traveling from Antigua to Lake Atitlan early in the morning because it's easy to get to other towns during the day and gives you ample time to explore and get across to other lake villages if you need to. It's also safer during the day, you can begin to be aware of your surroundings and actually see what it's like.

We don't recommend arriving at night if you can't get a direct shuttle to your specific town. This means you shouldn't take the afternoon shuttle service. Here's the thing:

The lanchas (boat taxis) stop going across the lake from around 5pm because it's too dangerous with the waves and wind conditions. We were planning to travel from San Cristobal de las Casas to Lake Atitlan and we got dropped off at 9pm in Panajachel. Thankfully, we booked one night's hotel in Pana because there was no way to get across to San Pedro La Laguna in Lake Atitlan without paying over $60 USD for a scary (possibly dangerous) lancha ride!

Which are the most popular villages to get dropped off at?

The most popular villages to get dropped off are Panajachel and San Pedro. From these two towns, there are lanchas every 15-30 minutes to take you to the other towns.

It's important to note: The journey from Antigua to Panajachel is much easier for people who are sensitive to motion sickness. The drive from Antigua to San Pedro La Laguna includes one of the windiest roads we've ever ridden on! One of the people on our shared shuttle almost (maybe he did but I didn't want to look) puked from the drive. Again - take some Dramamine if it really affects you! Or just take the shuttle to Panajachel and take the lancha (boat taxi) across.

What is the best month to visit Lake Atitlan?

The best time to visit Lake Atitlan is January, February and March. This is the peak season, but despite the crowds, the weather is just too good to miss!

If you’re after cheaper deals on accommodation and fewer crowds and don’t mind some rain, visiting in October and November could work for you. This is when the rain starts to lessen but you might get better deals and fewer crowds.

Is Lake Atitlan expensive?

We found our cost of living in Guatemala was generally more expensive than we were used to, but Lake Atitlan was definitely cheaper than Antigua.

For 2 people, our cost of living for one month in Lake Atitlan was $1,529.

I've been to 54 countries and have lived in 10. These 5 underrated places are worth the trip.

  • Kate Boardman has visited 54 countries around the world and lived in 10, including the US.
  • She's enjoyed spots like France and Bali but says people should visit underrated places like Oman.
  • In Guatemala, she climbed an active volcano, and in Ecuador, she swam with hammerhead sharks.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kate Boardman , a 36-year-old former teacher and current content creator from Massachusetts who has lived and traveled all over the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I first lived abroad when I was 15, when I participated in an exchange program in Germany. I lived there for a year, attending school and staying with a host family.

That was my first exposure to living overseas and truly immersing myself in other cultures. From there, the travel bug hit me hard. It inspired me to study international business in France while I was at university, and future trips after that.

I've been to 54 countries and lived in 10, including the US. The sense of freedom and self-growth that comes from traveling is unbeatable. I also love being able to see the world in a different way.

The most popular destinations are popular for a reason.

Everyone talks about Paris, London , Bali — all travel destinations that are super popular, in part thanks to social media.

I visited Bali in early 2012 and saw it expand firsthand. There was a lot of construction — with many beach clubs being built — and it became overcrowded by foreigners. It's led to locals being priced out of their homes.

I also think spots like Cancun are super overrated; there are way cooler places to visit in Mexico. Many tourists spend a week in an all-inclusive resort and think that's fun — but that couldn't be more unattractive to me.

Obviously, there's still beauty in places that are oversaturated and famous. But I think that there's an excitement that comes from experiencing places that are off the beaten track.

It's often in those places that you can have the most surprising experiences.

I was treated like family in Iran

I would say my favorite country that I have visited is Iran. I went in 2018 and was there for 10 days.

Normally, when I'm traveling, I backpack alone and stay in hostels as a solo traveler. However, in Iran, if you're American, Canadian, or from the UK, in order to get permission to enter the country, you need a set itinerary and a licensed travel guide.

It was a very coordinated trip and a bit more challenging to visit, but it was so rewarding because I was welcomed with the warmest hospitality.

One of the unique aspects of this trip was how close my guide and I became. He went above and beyond, inviting me over to his family's house for dinner, where I got to meet and hang out with his friends and family. It was truly special.

Because I had a guide, everything was kind of set for me in Iran. He arranged different accommodations, including a road trip through the country, where we stayed in various cities at different guesthouses.

It only cost me around $1,000.

The nature and landscape of Iran are absolutely beautiful and amazing. The sights, attractions, and history are mind-blowing. You've got these gorgeous mosaics everywhere. All of the architecture had my jaw dropping in awe while walking around.

The food is also delicious, and the markets are incredible, each filled with gorgeous textiles, jewelry, turquoise, and rugs.

I would totally visit there again. I hope the political situation changes because that would definitely be one of my group trip destinations. I think it's just incredible.

Georgia took me by surprise

Georgia is just one of those countries that's not on a lot of people's radar. And then they go there and they're like, 'Whoa, that's awesome. Why didn't I know about this before?'

I knew very little about Georgia before I visited in 2018. I spent only five days in the country, but I was completely blown away.

I stayed in Tbilisi, which is the capital city. It's a really beautiful, trendy, and artsy kind of city. It has amazing wine and incredible food.

Probably one of my favorite things about the trip is that I stayed in this hostel called Fabrika . It was an old Soviet Union sewing factory that they turned into a super cool, industrial, hipster hostel.

In Tbilisi, I also went on a pub crawl throughout the Old Town, which featured a bunch of underground cellars and bunkers that have been turned into trendy nightclubs and bars.

During my time in the country, I took a trip out to the countryside to an area called Kazbegi, which is absolutely stunning. There were gorgeous and breathtaking mountains, hills, and massive churches.

Related stories

In the city, I also had a Turkish bath, which is a big thing in Georgia. I got a full scrub down.

Guatemala has something for everyone

When most people from the US think about going to Central America, they're focused on Mexico or Costa Rica. Guatemala seems to be a place that kind of gets overlooked.

But life is great in Guatemala.

You've got beautiful weather all year round, the jungle, rainforests, and the Caribbean's white sand beaches, while the Pacific side has its black sand beaches. It's got a little bit of everything.

I first lived in Guatemala in 2021, where I worked as a teacher at an international school. They provided housing in Guatemala City. However, after I finished working for them, I moved to a beach town on the Pacific coast and lived there for about six months.

I've traveled there on other occasions too, staying for periods of four or five months.

The typical salary for a Guatemalan is about $500 a month, with a good salary being $1,000. I would say that $2,000 a month is more than enough to live there extremely comfortably.

There are a lot of digital nomads moving there, especially to Antigua — an old colonial town with a lot of charm, cobblestone streets, and painted buildings.

There's just so much to do in Guatemala; it's so magical.

The biggest must do is hiking the active volcano called Acatenango . Sometimes, you can see it erupting right from its base camp. There's not many places in the world where you can experience that.

Another good place to visit is El Paredon, a super up-and-coming hippie surf town. The surfing is great, and you've got these black volcanic sand beaches. It's just a really laid-back place.

Lake Atitlan is also an incredible spot. It's surrounded by volcanoes and several Mayan villages, each with its own personality and vibe.

Oman's deserts are magical

Oman is in the Middle East, bordering the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. I've been there three times between 2016 and 2018.

The country is culturally rich, and the capital city, Muscat, is really beautiful. It has old traditional marketplaces and gorgeous architecture — the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is definitely worth checking out.

The deserts there are incredible, so doing a desert trip is a must. I camped out in the desert with the locals, rode camels, and drove Jeeps over the sand dunes.

Having tea and watching the sunset in the desert was magical too.

Oman also has wadis, which are basically big canyons in the middle of the desert with swimming holes. There, you'll find bright turquoise water contrasting with the orange rock.

The country's islands are also beautiful and incredible for snorkeling. They look like you'd be in the Caribbean, but you're in the Middle East.

The Galapagos Islands are truly like nowhere else in the world

I visited Ecuador last year for about six weeks. I was leading a gap year program with a group of high school students. We split our time between the Galapagos Islands and the mainland, which consisted of cities and the Amazon.

Because Ecuador has incredibly unique biodiversity that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world, The Galapagos Islands are an absolute must. I've never seen such incredible wildlife in my life; so many species exist only on those islands.

While visiting The Galapagos, my group went snorkeling with 50 to 100 hammerhead and Blacktip sharks. We also swam with sea lions and saw giant tortoises.

Another amazing aspect of Ecuador is learning about the Inca culture. My group did a homestay and lived with a family for about 10 days and learned about their way of life.

We experienced how connected they are with Mother Earth, whom they refer to as Pachamama, and learned about their traditional medicine: They grow their own food and seek out plant medicine when they're sick, rather than relying on processed foods.

Learning about and sharing their way of life was truly special.

I want to show people how to travel the world

There are many beliefs people have about different countries and cultures, sometimes considering them too dangerous, expensive, or unattainable.

I want to inspire more people to explore, step out of their comfort zones, and experience more of the world. I am hosting group trips with the goal of bringing people to these countries and showing them why they are so life-changing.
