Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.

Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.

When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:

The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?

The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?

The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?

The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?

Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.

Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.

Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.

Disney Cruise Line

When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.

There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.

Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.

Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.

The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship.

Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities.

Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke.

The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited.

In-room babysitting isn't available.

Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.

The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.

All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.

The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.

For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.

As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.

Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.

Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.

Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.

For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.

On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.

Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.

Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary.

Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together.

Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke.

For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.

The fleet has 22 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.

Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.

The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.

Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.

For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.

MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.

Celebrity, Holland America and Princess

Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line and Princess offer kids programs, but they’re not as well known for amenities on the ships like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters. The ships often aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships.

These lines can be great for multigenerational cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And they also have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.

The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.

June Cruises

Reimagine your summer vacation

Start summer in luxurious style on one of Celebrity’s June cruises to the world’s most unforgettable ports. Visit Athens and the Greek Islands, rich in antiquities, and shop for handicrafts in Istanbul’s spectacular Grand Bazaar. Gaze at priceless art in Florence, and stroll the waterfront of glamorous Portofino. Or head north, following the midnight sun to Scandinavia, where you could cruise the serenely beautiful Norwegian fjords, or enjoy long, light-filled days in cosmopolitan capitals like Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Copenhagen.

Discover the rugged beauty of Alaska, where you can spot orcas and humpback whales, and look for bears foraging in glacier-fed streams. Or unwind on a pristine beach, whether you opt for the pale pink sands of Bermuda or the white coral shorelines of Bimini and Cozumel. Revel in an onboard experience like no other, with world-class service, innovative venues, and distinctive restaurants featuring globally inspired menus.

Itineraries

Top june cruise destinations, italy, france & spain.

Enjoy the best of Italy, France, and Spain in the blissful warmth of early summer, when the purple lavender fields in Provence are coming into bloom. Sail from Rome or Barcelona to ports like Portofino, where pastel-colored buildings line the pretty harbor, and La Spezia, to see the art treasures of Florence and the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. Explore dreamy Valdemossa on a day trip from Palma, and in Corsica, sample local cheese, wine, charcuterie, and honey from the farmers’ market.

Turkey & Greece

Follow the ancient trade routes across the Mediterranean to Sicily, Greece, and Istanbul, where you’ll have two days to explore the incredible Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, and Grand Bazaar. Visit ancient Ephesus, which is brilliant with wildflowers in June. Explore Little Venice in Mykonos, and marvel at the fiery sunset on Santorini, where whitewashed villages spill over volcanic cliffs. You’ll also visit Naples, where you can see the poignant ruins of Pompeii or the famed Amalfi Coast.

June is one of the best times to visit Alaska, with multiple exciting itineraries to choose from. See the blue-white face of the vast Hubbard Glacier, soar across one of the world’s longest ziplines in Icy Strait Point, and look out for orcas, bears, and eagles as you sail the Inside Passage. Experience the Juneau Icefield via helicopter, join an Alaskan wildlife safari, and find out how dog sled teams train their huskies for thrilling endurance races.

Western Caribbean

If island-hopping through the Caribbean is your idea of the perfect June vacation, then book a cruise to unforgettable ports like Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Bimini. Get close to the local marine life at Grand Cayman’s Stingray City. In Cozumel, snorkel over dazzling corals, join a salsa-making class, or take a day trip to the clifftop Mayan city of Tulum. Tiny Bimini is the place to unwind on pure white sands and swim in water that’s an almost unbelievable shade of turquoise.

Cruise from New Jersey to Bermuda this June to enjoy the summer sunshine on this chic island paradise. Dive into the deep blue water to explore some of the island’s 300 shipwrecks, unwind on a beach of pale pink sand, and explore atmospheric underground caves, all within short reach of the port. Stroll down Front Street in Hamilton, where you’ll find colorful upscale shops selling local art, luxury clothing brands, and jewelry.

Scandinavia

On a June cruise to the verdant Norwegian fjords, you’ll visit Bergen, where the colorful old warehouses of Bryggen line the waterfront. In Stavanger, embark on a thrilling hike to Pulpit Rock, which juts 1,800 feet over the Lysefjord. Explore sleepy Olden and the wonderful art deco architecture of Alesund. Or visit the fascinating cities of beautiful Stockholm, chic Copenhagen, fairytale Tallinn, and modern Helsinki, all at their best in the long days of midsummer.

Best Family Cruise (2023) March 24, 2023

Thanks to their excellent travel value, more and more families are turning to cruises when planning their vacations. These 10 cruise ships, voted as the best in the industry by our readers, cater to young passengers in many ways, including family-friendly at-sea experiences (bumper cars, bowling and water parks, to name a few), family cabins and kid-approved dining options.

Disney Fantasy

No. 10: Disney Fantasy - Disney Cruise Line

On the Disney Fantasy, children's programs are Disney-crafted and predictably high-quality, with something for every age group. The older set loves bulleting down 4-deck-drop AquaDuck water coaster, and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique delights kids with princess or pirate makeovers. Meanwhile, parents can refresh at Quiet Cove Pool.

Carnival Panorama

No. 9: Carnival Panorama - Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Panorama sails from Long Beach, California with tons of things to do for every member of the family. The first-ever Sky Zone at sea comprises an indoor trampoline park for all ages, while the water park features two huge waterslides. Play soccer, basketball, volleyball or pingpong in SportSquare. Parents can unwind at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

Disney Dream

No. 8: Disney Dream - Disney Cruise Line

Aboard the Disney Dream, Donald gets his due with AquaDuck, a 4-deck-drop water coaster that zips riders through a transparent tube. Costumed characters – Mickey, Minnie and friends – keep the preschool set happy, whlie youth clubs offer something for every age group, from infants to teens. Character greetings and Broadway-style productions (with a Disney twist) make this 4,000-passenger vessel a hit with the young and the young at heart.

Disney Magic

No. 7: Disney Magic - Disney Cruise Line

On the Disney Magic, AquaLab’s splashy play park plus two waterslides boost Magic’s fun quotient. Even more cool: kids can celebrate Marvel Day at Sea on select itineraries. Magic also includes the adults-only Cove Cafe, making Magic sweeter for everyday heroes: the parents.

Carnival Vista

No. 6: Carnival Vista - Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival elevated its already very family-friendly offerings with the debut of Carnival Vista. Kids can ride a bike through the sky, go mini bowling or play pingpong at SportSquare, as well as splash around at the onboard water park. Kids love the Cherry On Top candy store and ice cream counter, and parents will appreciate the Family Harbor staterooms equipped with board games, family movies and video games.

Navigator of the Seas

No. 5: Navigator of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas promises the entire family “a maxed out adventure in just a few short days.” This weekend cruise offers an educational and engaging Babies and Tots program, mini golf, the FlowRider surf simulator, Riptide (the first headfirst mat racer waterside at sea), The Blaster aqua coaster, the longest waterslide at sea, and many more fun-filled activities. Adults can enjoy unique classes such as jewelry making, culinary instruction and scuba certification for some time away from the children.

Mardi Gras

No. 4: Mardi Gras - Carnival Cruise Line

Providing fun for all family members, young and old, Carnival Cruises’ Mardi Gras ship offers “Zones” – six areas of this ship, each with a different theme for eating, drinking and just having fun. Experience BOLT – the first and fastest roller coaster at sea, which offers terrific 360-degree ocean views; enjoy WaterWorks, with its spiraling slides, racing slides, dumping bucket and more; or play a game of Family Feud Live on an authentic set. Parents can enjoy a break from the kids at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat, where they’ll find peaceful sea breezes, comfortable lounging and a nearby bar.

MSC Seashore

No. 3: MSC Seashore - MSC Cruises

The MSC Seashore offers “an unmatched experience for young cruisers,” with five different clubs for ages 1-17. In their 7,500 square feet of dedicated space, the futuristic-inspired area is devoted to outer space and planetary exploration activities. Younger children can enjoy building with blocks and science experiments, while older children participate in foosball competitions and video games. For outdoor fun, the Pirates Cove Aquapark offers a waterslide, splash area, adventure trail, and more, and the Jungle Pool offers the entire family the chance to swim and relax together.

Carnival Horizon

No. 2: Carnival Horizon - Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Horizon sails from Miami to the Caribbean with plenty of family fun onboard. Kid-approved amenities include two movie theaters (including an IMAX screen), Dr. Seuss WaterWorks water park, nighttime babysitting and reduced prices for kids at some specialty restaurants.

Regal Princess

No. 1: Regal Princess - Princess Cruises

A favorite feature among kids aboard the Regal Princess is the SeaWalk, a glass-bottomed walkway extending 28 feet over the ship’s edge. There are also three excellent dedicated kids' spaces for three different age ranges. Connecting staterooms and Family Suites make it easy to keep an eye on the kids while enjoying some privacy.

Nice cruise

Well worth paying the extra for the Radisson cruise. We went on the bigger of the Radisson river boats and it did not disappoint. Much more comfortable than the smaller river boat cruises and we felt it enabled us to take better photos due to the higher top deck. We boarded at the Radisson 'Ukraine' Hotel, which in itself is a wonder and made it worth the long walk we had to get there.

Dear Alan H, Thank you for the time spent on Board "Radisson" and leaving feedback. For successful development of the company it is important to know the opinion of each guest. All the reviews are very motivated us to further improve the quality of work, as our main task to provide services of adequate quality to make the Guests come back to us again. We constantly adjust our menu, reviewing the pricing and hold tenders among suppliers for the purpose that you get the best service and felt the joy of leisure time spent with the Flotilla «Radisson Royal». We will be happy to see you again on our yachts. Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager.

I would recommend doing an evening tour. We timed ours perfectly, the sun set on the outbound trip, and Moscow was lit up on the return. Got some great photos. We didn't have a meal, and I probably wouldn't recommend it. Get there early, ignore them directing you to the restaurant, go to the upper deck and bag a good table with a view. The drink prices are reasonable, about the same as most average Moscow restauraunts, £5 for a large beer. Some reviews seem to confuse this with a guided tour...it is definitely not. Forget about MP3 players and maps, they are rubbish, just enjoy the views. If its a special occasion and you have remortgaged the house (£15 drinks), go the the bar on the 32nd floor of the Radisson afterwards.

Dear kevintiobraid, Thank you for your feedback about Flotilla Radisson Royal. It's nice that you were able to feel the atmosphere on Board of our yacht "Radisson". It is ideal for spending time with family, and for romantic dinners, especially in the evening, when Moscow is immersed in the lights and the city became fairytale. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year, during which you can enjoy fabulous views of Moscow and refined dishes. It’s very important for us to know the opinion of each guest. Guest comments help us to improve the service and to do the rest on the yachts even more comfortable. We will be glad to see you again! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-manager.

We booked this for the night of arrival thinking it's an easy way to get an overview of the city when we 're jet lagged and that was absolutely true. Your place mat is a map of the sites and you can get an MP3 player that describes them in English. Dinner was average quality and price , but just fine. Not high end so don't expect that. The top deck was chilly so bring a wrap, although they do bring out blankets which was nice. I really enjoyed this and it did give me an idea of how the city is laid out. Good first night activity! Would recommend !

My business host & I had recently enjoyed a pleasant Monday evening cruising down the Moskva river. We were booked into the lower deck and, it being a Monday evening and quite empty grabbed a table for two by the window. Our waitress didn't speak a word of English which we think explained her cool, frosty approach to us. We left our mooring on time and cruised off down river with the imposing Russia White House on our port side (very nautical eh?). It was a lovely balmy evening and many people were strolling down the long embankments which lined, notably our starboard side. The place mats give an overview of the cruise itinerary and helpful hints to the main sites on the river bank. The cruise came with a meal - I ordered an Italian sausage/meat selection as a starter and three rather sad looking lamb chops as a main course. The best part for me was the German weissbier and sweet strawberries & cream as dessert. If you want to experience Moscow from a different angle then this is the thing for you. The huge advantage is that you miss out on the Moscovites main pastime of sitting in traffic jams - everywhere! The access to a small open deck section was handy for taking those essential photos of the key sites of the city centre area. I really enjoyed the evening - nice relaxing atmosphere, pleasant enough food and the chance to unwind.

Thank you for sharing your impressions about the trip on one of the yachts "Radisson". Guest comments help us to improve the service and to do the rest on the yachts even more comfortable. We will consider all your comments. Please accept my sincere apologies for the spoiled impression that have arisen because of insufficient attention from our staff. It's an unfortunate exception. We will be happy to see you again on our yachts to estimate the level of our service and enjoy a ride on the open deck. Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager.

Bizarre. Music was too loud but nice. Food and drink was reasonable and fair priced. Photographer was good... No explanation of sights but placemats had info. Relaxing eve. Not a sightseeing event, lovely dinner and drinks eve.

I have gone two times with the Radisson Flotilla, one in Spring and one in summer; the first time in the lower deck, the second in the First Class section. Both times we received a very good service. The pros of being in the First Class section is that for sure you will get a table next to the window while in the lower deck there are also tables in the middle so it´s better to arrive early enough to get a good sit. If you have children they have a person that takes care of them so you could enjoy your trip. The ambiance is pretty relaxing, the food is good and the price of it (for Moscow standards) is not expensive. It´s a must do to enjoy the Moskva and see the city for the first time!
