Where to Go for Labor Day Weekend to Avoid the Crowds

By Charlie Hobbs

The Moorings Village Hotel

As Labor Day’s long weekend looms near, one might feel that the time to plan a weekend getaway has long since passed. Last year , some 49.2 million Americans hit the road to make the most of summer’s close in what is typically one of the nation’s busiest travel times. But don’t let the impending flood of road-trippers deter you from embarking on a last minute excursion of your own. Just outside every major city awaits an abundance of easy-to-get-to changes of scenery ideally situated for easy weekends away.

Below, you'll find recommendations for less-visited weekend getaways across the country—the solution for avoiding Labor Day weekend crowds on short notice. Those in Chicago should consider hitting the beach, while southerners might want to look inland. New Yorkers can count on the North Fork, and Floridians heading down the Keys need not go all the way to the end. National parks, oceanside vistas, and historic districts are all on the menu—here are some Labor Day weekend getaways to consider for 2022.

Olema House at Point Reyes

Olema House at Point Reyes

Point Reyes, California

While scenic Big Sur to South Francisco’s south gets most of the attention, Highway 1 runs in both directions. An hour north of the Golden Gate city lies Point Reyes, a national seashore skirting Tomales Bay that’s dotted with a smorgasbord of small towns. Expect seafood in spades: Osteria Stellina and Tony’s Seafood Restaurant are just a few exceptional options. Fill time between meals with a 2.5-mile hike on Tomales Bay Trail or a kayak trip .

Stay here: Nick’s Cove is the ideal jumping-off point for all things Point Reyes, with its waterfront views and oysters delivered to your door. A bit farther from the shore, boutique hotel Olema House Point Reyes still enjoys proximity to a babbling brook.

Rim of the World Scenic Overlook

Big Bear Lake, California

Primo California hiking prevails in SoCal’s Big Bear region, but a stroll around the region’s titular lake isn’t the only way to enjoy the scenery. The Rim of the World Scenic Byway , aptly named for its high altitude, takes you on a tour of the San Bernardino Mountains, while Action ZipLine Tours brings you above the action. For a moment of rest, find a table at Big Bear Lake Brewing Company or Saucy Mama’s Pizzeria .

Stay here: Kitschy campground chic can be found at Noon Lodge —otherwise, consult our roundup of Big Bear’s best Airbnbs .

Bird amp Jim

Bird & Jim

Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

90 minutes outside of Denver, Estes Park is the place to stay while exploring Rocky Mountain National Park . Outdoor lovers of all skill sets and levels will find their niche here, with vistas accessible via strenuous hikes, easy ambles, and scenic drives. The dauntless hiker will enjoy Twin Sisters Peak Trail , where you’ll climb 2,400 feet and 3.2 miles to the summit, while the less experienced might prefer a stroll by Sprague Lake . Trail Ridge Road , a 48 mile stretch of road between Estes Park and Grand Lake, shows you a solid section of Rocky Mountain without requiring a moment spent outside the car. It’s not all nature, either—grab dinner at Bird & Jim for some New American fare in a stylish environment.

Stay here: While it may be too late to book a campground, you can take shelter in The Stanley Hotel . Famous for inspiring the Overlook Hotel in The Shining , the spread has a reputation for being haunted.

Gruene Hall Austin Bar Interior

Gruene Hall

Gruene, Texas

Gruene is pronounced like the color “green,” and its location along the Guadalupe River allows the town to be exactly that—at least, more so than other Texas towns. Only 50 minutes from Austin, Gruene in its entirety is designated as a historic site. The music scene, and Gruene Hall in particular, can claim a good chunk of the credit for that storied status. It’s there that Willie Nelson has his own private entrance, and that he and George Strait and Lyle Lovett have all graced the stage. Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar is right across the street for sustenance and libations. The less musically inclined might find adventure and float down the Guadalupe with Rockin’ R River Rides , where the atmosphere may be particularly rowdy with revelers enjoying the long weekend.

Stay here: Rest your head at the Gruene Mansion Inn , originally built as the mayoral residence. Located within walking distance of the aforementioned attractions, it’s simply the place to be.

Jack Daniels Distillery. The Visitor Center at the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee USA

The Visitor Center at the Jack Daniels Distillery

Lynchburg, Tennessee

The home to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is also located in a dry county. You can still sample the goods if you take an on-site tour —and swing by Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. , while you’re at it—but otherwise you’ll have to find your kicks elsewhere. Indeed, some of the best activities in this supreme spot along the Tennessee Whiskey Trail are best enjoyed sober. Consider, for example, spending an afternoon in Historic Lynchburg perusing antiques and feasting on barbecue. There’s also Tims Ford State Park , which boasts an 18-hole golf course and an extensive marina.

Stay here: Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House , the town’s original boarding house, reigns supreme. Enjoy meals family style with other guests and learn about the town’s history from your attentive hostess.

close up beach shot of a cold fresh water lake and shoreline with small fresh water mussels and sand in the foreground...

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Always prepared for tourists but less popular than it was in its Gilded Age glory, Lake Geneva feels like a resort. Paths and parks line the shoreline, most notably the 26-mile Lake Geneva Shore Path . Here, you’ll see the lavish lawns and estates built by wealthy Chicagoans in the 19th century. Current residents leave 20 feet available to the public, meaning benches and art installations abound. Also downtown sits Riviera Beach, a small stretch of sand with an admission fee to ensure cleanliness and curb crowds. Queen Bee Artisan Market , a year-round indoor market housed within Fancy Fair Mall, makes it easy to support some small businesses while in the neighborhood.

Stay here: A former Gilded Age parlor, Baker House was built back in 1885. With a more modern hotel on either side, the spot feels especially charming. There are only four rooms, so don’t drag your feet.

The Tides Beach Club Kennebunkport Maine

The Tides Beach Club

The Kennebunks, Maine

Seaside sister summer towns—say that three times fast. Kennebunk and Kennebunkport sit along the Kennebunk River and converge at Dock Square . The breezy downtown shopping area comprises both Kennebunk's Lower Village and Kennebunkport's downtown, meaning double the paintings, jewelry, and other artisan wares available for purchase in the assortment of small businesses. The beach and the bar both make for appropriate pastimes in these parts—think Goose Rocks Beach , where you'll find sand of a sublime white color. Grab a bite at The Tides Beach Club to streamline the experience. Batson River Brewing & Distilling 's craft cocktails beckon for that irresistible aperitif.

Stay here: A demure dirt road leads to Hidden Pond , an aptly-named hideaway compound of private bungalows and cottages. More glamorous and off-the-grid is Sandy Pines Campground , a glamping destination with retro mobile homes for the tent-averse. Those seeking a spa above all else will want to check out White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection .

1943 Pizza Bar GREENPORT NORTH FORK LONG ISLAND New York NYC Restaurant

1943 Pizza Bar

Greenport, New York

It goes without saying that the Hamptons will be a hellscape come Labor Day weekend. But take the North Fork rather than the South and you may have more luck. You have to go all the way out, so that you’re just above Montauk–also known as the end of the world–and abscond to Greenport for the fullest experience. There, you’ll find vineyards like Croteaux , which specializes in rosé. A warm weather operation, this could be your last chance to check it out until next year. Brix & Rye and 1943 Pizza Bar are also on call to wine and dine you between paddleboarding and beach trips.

Stay here: At the American Beech Hotel , which is as much about its restaurant as it is about the lodging. You will be well fed and cared for, all under one roof.

South Carolina Maritime Museum Charleston South Carolina Day Trips

South Carolina Maritime Museum

Georgetown, South Carolina

Nicknamed Little Charleston, Georgetown boasts quite a few things in common with South Carolina's most major destination. Antique Antebellum homes are on every corner, while the entire downtown sits on the Register of Historic Places. The waterside location means fresh seafood can be enjoyed in full view of the Atlantic at River Room after a day spent at the South Carolina Maritime Museum .

Stay here: It's all about the inns.   Baxter's Brewhouse Inn is the nation's first Bed & Brew (being a bed & breakfast that also brews beer), while stately 620 Prince occupies a 19th-century mansion.

The Moorings Village Hotel

The Moorings Village Hotel

Islamorada, Florida

Only 90 minutes south of Miami Beach, Islamorada is perhaps the least known of the Florida Keys. Is that because it’s so easy to get to? Known for its fishing, the village has fine dining in the form of hot spots like Pierre’s and classic rum cocktails at The Tiki Bar at Cheeca Lodge .

Stay here: The Moorings Village is an 18-acre waterfront property with only eight private villas, making it easy to imagine that your little slice of heaven belongs to you alone.

The Dreamiest National Parks For Celebrating Labor Day Weekend

Best National Park for Labor Day Weekend

Looking for a Labor Day Weekend with a view? Say hello to some of the country’s most gorgeous national parks. Just a quick jaunt away from some of the major business cities in the US, these dreamy outdoor destinations are the perfect locales to kiss summer goodbye before diving into fall. Here’s where to enjoy a fantastic long weekend.

Best national park for labor day: white sands national park

White Sands National Monument, 3.5 hrs from Albuquerque

With its hundreds of miles of white gypsum sand, White Sands National Monument almost looks like a scene out of Antarctica - except it’s many, many degrees hotter than any glacier. Hike along White Sands’ expansive dunes or sled through the sand (yep, really!). The best way to enjoy your time there is to treat yourself to a picnic at one of the many shaded tables and barbecue spots along the monument. Just don’t forget your sunglasses - all that sand reflects the bright rays right back up into your eyes!

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, 4.5 hrs from Phoenix

The colorful, curvy rock formations of Vermilion Cliffs are unlike any other place in the world. Explore the rainbow colors of Coyote Buttes, Paria Canyon, Paria Plateau, and - of course - the monument’s namesake, Vermilion Cliffs. You can take epic Instagram-ready photos, hike among the best that nature has to offer, and marvel at the magic of the local wildlife. With 294,000 acres to explore, you’ll be anything but bored.

Labor day trip to national park California

Channel Islands National Park, 1.5 hrs from LA

This gorgeous archipelago is a perfect way to get out on the ocean without the massive crowds of your average LA beach. Each of the park’s five islands have their own unique adventures to offer. Get up close and personal with the park’s unique marine life by snorkeling or kayaking. Head out on a waterfront hike to break a sweat. Or, if a low-key weekend is more your style (we hear you), just kick back among the sunshine and feel the ocean breeze.

Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park, 4 hrs from Seattle

Every corner of Olympic National Park is well worth exploring, but no other corner of the park stirs the soul quite like the Hoh Rainforest. This lush, green paradise is rife with moss, ferns, and greenery that look like they’re straight out of a storybook. Wander along the forest’s serene trails and try to keep your jaw off the floor as you gawk at the otherworldly beauty.

Best national park for labor day weekend

Bryce Canyon National Park, 4 hrs from Salt Lake City

Bryce Canyon is one of the country’s most famous national parks, and it’s easy to see why. The park’s natural bowls are filled with rocky spikes known as hoodoos, and they’re totally mesmerizing. Bryce Canyon’s most popular viewpoints can get crowded, but if you’re willing to wander farther along the park’s main road, you’ll find peaceful, crowd-free lookouts. Hikes, walks, mountain biking adventures, and horseback rides all make for a dreamy way to experience the park up close. Bryce Canyon is at its most beautiful at sunrise, so make sure you catch it in the early hours at least once!

Indiana Dunes National Park, 1 hr from Chicago

Indiana Dunes is on the bright blue shore of Lake Michigan, and if you’re going to visit, there’s one thing you need to know first: Lake Michigan is not your average lake. Much like the other four Great Lakes, Lake Michigan looks a lot more like a saltwater ocean from the shore than a local swimming hole. Now that we’ve got that squared away, picture this: 15 miles of peaceful shoreline; dotted with dunes, hiking trails, and fields of wildflowers beyond the water. Wander Dune Ridge Trail or hike to the top of Mount Baldy, the park’s most famous dune, for expansive views of the lake. Then, kick back on the beach with a cold drink to soak in the sunshine.

Best national park for labor day near Washington DC

Shenandoah National Park, 1.5 hrs from Washington, D.C.

At Shenandoah, you’ll find heaps of fresh air, rolling hills, and breathtaking views. The park is famous for its extensive 500-mile network of hiking trails, gorgeous canyons, and epic waterfalls. Cruise along the park’s famously scenic Skyline Drive. If you’re in the mood to wander even farther, you can drive to the southern end of the park and head onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you’ll enjoy mountain views stretching through from Virginia and North Carolina.

How to Have the Best Labor Day Vacation, According to Experts

Because travel has been especially difficult recently

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

According to a recent survey by the Vacationer, more than 50 percent of Americans will be traveling for Labor Day this year. And if the holiday weekend is anything like Memorial Day or July 4, it has the potential to be disastrous.

High gas and flight prices are straining wallets, while long waits and cancellations make air travel a gamble. To help you get the most out of your Labor Day plans, we spoke to several experts about the best way to save money and travel with minimal stress.

Choosing the right destination is the first hurdle to overcome. If you’re trying to avoid crowds, then Labor Day is the perfect time to visit an up-and-coming destination. According to Jason Epperson, host of the RV Miles and America’s National Parks podcasts, “mid-size cities have undergone a renaissance in the last decade.” So instead of heading to New York City, Chicago, or Atlanta, consider visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico; Waco, Texas; or Shreveport, Louisiana.

Trying to check some national parks off your list? “Labor Day weekend is actually a great time to visit northwestern parks like  Yellowstone , Grand Teton , and Glacier ,” said Epperson. These destinations tend to get cold quickly, so Labor Day is the perfect time to see these parks’ splendor.

If you’re one of the 14 percent of Americans hoping to fly for Labor Day, there’s a lot of potential for a terrible start to the holiday, but there’s still hope. To combat delays, avoid booking an afternoon or evening flight. According to Lauren Gumport, vice president at Faye Travel Insurance , a morning flight is your best bet because “delays get worse as the day goes on.”

Gumport also recommends scheduling activities for the day after you arrive. That way, a canceled flight doesn’t also cancel activities you were looking forward to. Also, unless it’s necessary, do not check a bag. Traveling carry-on-only is the best way to prevent your bags from being lost. But if you need to check a bag, the co-founders of VIP Traveler , Mark Hoenig and Josh Borenstein, recommend adding an Apple Air Tag or Tile to your packing list. If the bag gets lost , you can track it yourself instead of relying on the airport and airline that lost it.

Ultimately, if the destination is nearby, don’t fly. “If you can get to your destination in five to six hours by driving, consider this option instead as wait times at airports will be lengthy,” explained Gumport.

For the one-third of Americans hoping to drive this Labor Day, high gas prices are impacting travel plans. Prices at the pump have been falling, but they’re still high enough to make long road trips less attractive. Apps will be your friend, whether using a service like GasBuddy to find the lowest gas prices or utilizing Waze or Roadtrippers to plan the ideal route. Traveling outside of rush hour will also save you gas and time.

Some hotel brands are trying to mitigate high gas prices, too. The Graduate Nashville recently launched its Fuel to the Flame package , where guests who show a gas receipt at check-in get an equivalent credit up to $100 applied to the bill, complimentary valet parking, and snacks for the drive home.

Hotel rates can be one of the most expensive parts of a vacation, but there are a few ways to save without staying at a dingy hotel. "A great way to save on hotels is to look outside the main tourist area. Not only are you saving money, but you're expanding your experience to other wonderful neighborhoods and places," said Christopher Falvey, co-founder of Unique NOLA Tours .

And if you don't mind doing things last minute, you can increase your savings by booking at the 11th hour. As Clem Bason, general manager of travel at Snaptravel , explained, "a hotel makes no money on an empty hotel room, so they will often cut their prices at the last minute in order to fill it."

For professionally-managed vacation home rentals, booking directly from the property manager can get you some significant savings versus booking from a platform like Vrbo or Airbnb. You can save as much as 15 percent on rates by booking directly, according to Sasha Barak, marketing manager at Enso Connect .

While there's no way to promise a stress-free vacation, these tips should at least make your trip a bit smoother.

The Vacationer. " Labor Day Travel Survey 2022 — 53%+ (137 Million to Travel), 50%+ Say Gas Prices to Affect Plans, Nearly 53% to Still Road Trip. " August 8, 2022.

Expect crowds at Zion National Park this weekend/Rebecca Latson file

The last big holiday weekend in the National Park System likely will be a busy one in many parks. Staff at Zion , Acadia , and Sequoia/Kings Canyon  national parks are saying crowds can be expected in their parks this coming weekend.

  • Zion National Park

At Zion in Utah, visitors should expect some queues and congestion within the park. Those with flexible plans are encouraged to visit before Friday or after Monday to avoid crowds.

Park visitors are reminded to  recreate responsibly  and plan ahead. Parking in Zion typically fills by 8 a.m. Mountain, so visitors arriving later should plan on parking in Springdale and walking or taking the free town  shuttle  to the Pedestrian Entrance walk-in gate.

The first Springdale shuttle leaves the Majestic View Lodge at 7 a.m. and the last shuttle leaves the Zion Canyon Village at 9 p.m. The first   Zion Canyon shuttle   leaves the visitor center at 6 a.m., the last shuttle leaves the visitor center at 6 p.m., and the last shuttle out of the canyon from the Temple of Sinawava leaves at 8:15 p.m. Once parking in Zion is full, vehicle admittance into the park will be metered based upon availability. The Zion Mount Carmel Highway may be closed to through traffic periodically when parking has filled in order to safely relieve congestion both east and west of the large tunnel and to restore traffic flow.     To avoid park traffic use alternative routes such as: Utah Highway 59/Arizona Highway 389, Utah Highway 14, and Utah Highway 20.

Park visitors are reminded to “ K now before you go”;  research the park and the activity you plan to do and potential hazards you may encounter, be realistic about your limits and the limits of those traveling with you, identify the right equipment for your trip and test it and/or try it out before you go. Everyone who hikes Angels Landing needs to have a permit, more information available at  go.nps.gov/AngelsLanding . Visitors should be prepared to hike in the heat, with plenty of water, electrolytes, and proper footwear. Check the weather forecast -- an excessive heat warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the park -- or stop by park Visitor Centers for up-to-date information. Your safety is your responsibility.

Acadia National Park likely will be crowded this weekend/NPS, Kristi Sugg

  • Acadia National Park

At Acadia in Maine, v isitors should arrive with a plan and a back-up plan  in case parking is unavailable. Go to nps.gov/Acadia  to learn about places to go and things to do in the park before you arrive. Download the  NPS App  to help guide your visit to Acadia and select “save this park for offline use.” Park only in designated parking spaces. Parking illegally is unsafe and adds to the traffic congestion.

Leave your car parked at your place of lodging and ride the fare-free Island Explorer bus, which connects the park with the surrounding communities on Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula. The Island Explorer  is operating on its reduced fall service schedule. Download the  myStop® app to view real-time bus locations and next available buses.

Visitors 16 and older are required to have a  park entrance pass, which can be purchased online at  Recreation.gov  or in person at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center. Vehicles must display a park entrance pass through the windshield. Entrance fees help enhance the visitor experience and protect resources at Acadia National Park.

Vehicle reservations are required for Cadillac Summit Road through October 22 and must be purchased online at  Recreation.gov  before arriving. Print or download the ticket with the QR code for validation. Reservations are not available for purchase in person. Vehicle reservations are not required for other locations in the park or for visitors who enter the area by foot, bicycle, or taxi.

Camping reservations are required for  park campgrounds and can be purchased on  Recreation.gov. Same day or walk-up reservations are not available. Backcountry camping, campfires and overnight parking are prohibited outside of designated campgrounds.

Hikers should know the difficulty of the park’s trails and select those that match their abilities (many of Acadia’s hikes are more challenging than they seem). Carry a detailed trail map with topography and don't rely on cell connectivity for trail navigation. Seventy percent of injuries to hikers in Acadia are due to slips, trips and falls. Wear sturdy footwear and beware of loose gravel, slippery rock, steep climbs and uneven surfaces.

Depending on CDC guidelines and the COVID-19 community level in Hancock County, Maine, masks may be required to enter park buildings, including the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, regardless of vaccination status.

Sequoia National Park/NPS

Crowds, congestion, and sold-out campsites are expected this weekend at Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks/NPS

Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks

Expect congestion and lines at park entrances. Avoid long waiting periods by arriving prior to 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m., and have your method of payment ready when you arrive at the gate. Save time and take advantage of an additional entry lane to the parks by purchasing your park pass online ahead of time at www.recreation.gov/pass . Bring snacks, water, and a full tank of gas.

RVs and trailers longer than 22 feet are advised to enter through the Big Stump Entrance Station in Kings Canyon National Park. Vehicles longer than 22 feet are not advised on the Generals Highway between Hospital Rock and Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park, due to the many sharp curves in this section.

Advance reservations are required to camp in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Campground reservations can be made up to one month in advance using www.recreation.gov , or by calling (877) 444-6777. Do not arrive planning to camp if you do not have a reservation. At this time, campsites for the holiday weekend are fully booked throughout both parks. All park campgrounds are open except for Dorst Creek Campground.

There are currently no public showers or laundry facilities available in the parks. Portable showers are permitted, but campers must collect the water and dispose of it in one of the outdoor sinks. All vehicles (2 allowed per site) must fit onto the parking pad. Overflow parking for cars that cannot fit onto parking pads is limited.

Bears have been active in all commonly visited areas of the parks recently, and it is critical that everyone manage their food, garbage, and scented items carefully to avoid serious problems between bears and humans. When bears obtain food from people, whether or not the people intended to feed them, they become more aggressive in their attempts to get more. In some situations, when a bear has become food-conditioned and bold with people, the parks must euthanize the bear to protect public safety.

Utilize the metal storage lockers near parking areas to store food and scented items that you are not planning to carry with you in the parks. Ensure that any garbage you throw away fits all the way inside the garbage receptacle, and that the receptacle closes properly. If there is not room in the receptacle for your garbage, pack it out with you. If you are camping, all food, scented items, and coolers, including bear-proof ice chests, must fit into the metal storage box at your campsite (most are 47" long x 33" deep x 28"high). Citations are issued for improper food storage.

Campfires and charcoal fires are prohibited outside of designated picnic areas and designated campgrounds. Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect in the parks, which means that wood and charcoal fires and barbeques are prohibited in South Fork, Potwisha, and Buckeye Flat Campgrounds, and Hospital Rock and Foothills picnic areas. Gas, propane, alcohol (with and without a shutoff valve) and tablet/cube stoves are permitted.

Labor Day Weekend is predicted to coincide with a heat wave, which will exacerbate already very hot and dry conditions. All fires must be closely and personally attended, and fully extinguished before you go to bed or leave the area. Rangers will be on patrol looking for and addressing unattended fire.

Tickets to enter the parks using the Sequoia Shuttle are $20 per person, and reservations are required - visit www.sequoiashuttle.com for more information. Shuttles within the Giant Forest area are free to use. All parking areas are expected to be crowded throughout the weekend. When parking lots near the General Sherman Tree are full, visitors are advised to park at Lodgepole or the Wuksachi Lodge and use the shuttle.

The Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road will be closed to personal vehicles from Saturday, September 3, to Monday, September 5. To access these areas, visitors can catch the shuttle at the Giant Forest Museum.

Wilderness permits can be reserved through www.recreation.gov up to six months in advance of your entry date. Reservations close one week prior to entry dates. A limited number of first-come, first-served permits are available daily at permit issuing stations in Cedar Grove, Grant Grove, Giant Forest Museum, Ash Mountain, and Mineral King. Reservations are the only way to be assured of a wilderness permit. Walk-up permits are in extremely high demand. If you don’t have a reservation, have alternate plans in case your first or second choice of entry points is unavailable.

Wilderness permit quota season ends on September 17, after which permits are not limited and are available by self-issue.

Those are just four parks that have issued alerts to crowding this weekend, but you can be sure many other parks will be thick with visitors.

Take advantage of the park's expansive hiking trails, and be sure to hit traveler favorites like the Trail of the Cedars and Iceberg Lake Trail. Other activities include a ride along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and a trip to the unique Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Canadian border. What's more, Glacier National Park hosts plenty of free ranger-led activities like guided hikes and stargazing events ideal for visitors of all ages.

Even if Yellowstone didn't hold the incredible distinction of being the world's first national park, the 2.2 million-acre park, which stretches across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, could easily stand on its own for its unique natural attractions and magnificent landscapes . Here, travelers can get lost in the splendor of Yellowstone's many lakes, mountains, bison-filled valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs and active geysers (of which the park boasts more than half of the world's supply). To avoid the crowds that often plague Yellowstone while also ensuring excellent weather, plan to visit in April, May or October.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

One of California's most-visited national parks, Yosemite National Park stands out for its bevy of impressive waterfalls, such as Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall, as well as its unique granite rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan. There are also ample scenic hiking and camping opportunities; just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance. Whatever your itinerary may be, make sure to stop by the Tunnel View overlook, which offers showstopping panoramas of Yosemite Valley. What's more, the picturesque lookout spot is relatively easy to access (no hiking is required).

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

The Grand Canyon is so magnificent that even the highest quality photos don't do the Arizona park's vast beauty justice – you just have to see it in person. The 18-by-277-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty, as well as the chance to raft the Colorado River. For a slight break from the tourist crowds, head to the less-congested North Rim. And if you're looking for a different vantage point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about Grand Canyon National Park and see it in all its glory from above.

Jackson Hole's backcountry is a wild wonderland begging to be explored. Once home to ranchers and fur trappers, this Wyoming park now offers more than 250 miles of trails that weave past forests, lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton mountain range. The Cascade Canyon Trail – which takes travelers past waterfalls, glacier-carved canyons and more – shows off the best of Grand Teton National Park's stunning topography. Don't forget to stop by the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center to stock up on maps, check out its informational exhibits and watch the interesting documentary film about the park.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Utah's Zion National Park is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Hike Angels Landing, which brings you up through a nearly 1,500-foot natural staircase (permits are required to hike this popular trail and are awarded through an online lottery system). You can also trek The Narrows, a roughly 10-mile hike through the thinnest section of Zion Canyon, which requires hikers to travel upstream through the Virgin River. For a less strenuous exploration of the park, join a shuttle bus tour to traverse the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which takes you past many of the park's most famous landmarks.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Spanning six million acres of unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park and Preserve is as vast as it is fascinating. One-sixth of the park is covered in glaciers, and the tallest mountain in North America, Denali, stands within its bounds, towering at 20,310 feet high. The park appeals to true explorers as there isn't an abundance of marked trails. However, free ranger-led trail hikes are available seasonally. Visitors can also watch a sled dog demonstration, go snowmobiling or take a narrated bus tour of the 92-mile Denali Park Road to see scenic landmarks like Savage River and Wonder Lake.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Comprised of glaciers, coastal fjords and icefields, Kenai Fjords National Park transports guests to an age where ice covered large parts of the earth. The Harding Icefield – which was created more than 23,000 years ago – is one of this Alaska park's main features, extending for 700 square miles and viewable via the 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail. Visitors can also embark on the Glacier Overlook Trail and Glacier View Loop Trail to catch vistas of Exit Glacier, which flows from the famed icefield. Or, take a kayak or a boat tour to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes from the water.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Hoodoos are odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from forces of erosion, and Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world. Located in southern Utah, the nearly 36,000-acre park offers an array of hiking opportunities. All trails offer a glimpse of the impressive red rock formations; visitors can also sign up for guided horseback riding tours. While Bryce Canyon is most popular in summer, the park's stark white snow-covered landscape juxtaposed with the orange-red rocks is an unforgettable sight. Winter is also a prime time for activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

As the name suggests, Redwood National and State Parks are best known for their sky-high redwood trees, which typically soar more than 300 feet tall. Along with exploring the old-growth redwood groves, travelers can hike past rivers, through prairies and along 40 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, spotting wildlife like elk, sea lions and various species of birds as they go. If you can't stay long, scenic drives like Howland Hill Road and Enderts Beach Road showcase park highlights. But for those wanting to sleep under the stars and rise with the sun, there are four developed campgrounds.

Established in 1929 and awarded national park status in 1971, Arches National Park covers nearly 77,000 acres in eastern Utah. Oddly shaped sandstone monuments occupy every view, and the formations make the park an excellent place for backpackers, rock climbers and hikers, not to mention photographers. Visitors will find a whopping 2,000-plus arches in the park – the world's densest concentration of these natural structures. The most popular to see are Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch and Double Arch. Plus, travelers will want to check out the visitor center, which features a wealth of information and exhibits outlining Arches National Park's history, geology and more.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Sequoia National Park is defined by its beautiful, towering sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world. Travelers can hike through this unique California national park to admire its trees, rivers, meadows and wildlife. A visit here is not complete without seeing the Giant Forest's General Sherman Tree, which measures nearly 275 feet tall and more than 36 feet in diameter, making it the world's largest tree by volume. After you ogle the truly impressive evergreens, try some other adventurous activities like rock climbing, horseback riding or fishing.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Among the nearly 1 million acres that make up Olympic National Park, visitors can wander through the enchanting Hoh Rainforest, trek to stunning overlooks and relax on more than 70 miles of Pacific Northwest coastline. One of North America's top hiking destinations , this Washington state gem features top trails like Mount Storm King and the Hall of Mosses. However, you will also want to save time for trying out one of Olympic National Park's other popular activities, which range from canoeing on Lake Crescent to birdwatching on Kalaloch and Ruby Beach.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

Visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter almost continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road (although eruption sightings are never guaranteed). While driving along Chain of Craters Road, set aside time to stop at the Kealakomo Overlook. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

At 14,410 feet tall, Mount Rainer is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the tallest volcano in the contiguous United States. Though thousands of travelers tackle the ambitious hike to the mountain's summit each year, it's far more popular to drive to Sunrise, the highest point accessible by vehicle, to soak in 360-degree views of the Cascade Range and Emmons Glacier. Numerous shorter hikes are also available at Mount Rainier National Park, so visitors can explore the temperate rainforests of Carbon River, admire the picturesque wildflower meadows at Paradise or search for the waterfalls in the old-growth forests at Ohanapecosh.

best national parks to visit labor day weekend

The Rockies earn plenty of points for their convenience. Sitting about 70 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park makes for an easy daytrip. However, you could also spend days exploring this Colorado park. The Rockies' magnificent landscape is one for the books, featuring more than 350 miles of scenic trails, plenty of lakes and numerous mountain peaks taller than 10,000 feet. If you're short on time, Emerald Lake Trail is a popular trek that's less than 5 miles round trip and promises spectacular alpine views. If you'd rather skip the hiking, opt instead for an auto tour of Trail Ridge Road.

You still have time to plan a Labor Day weekend trip: 10 fantastic spots

Make labor day travel fun with these stellar destinations.

The beach at Pismo Beach, California.

It’s wild to think of how quickly summer flies by every year. Yet while the summer travel season starts to wind down and we wonder where the summer went, we still have Labor Day Weekend to plan one more exciting and refreshing summer trip . We know that making summer vacation plans isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so we’re going out of our way to point out the destinations where you can escape the most maddening Labor Day weekend crowds without completely breaking the bank.

  • Wait, summer’s almost over?

Portland, Maine

Newport, rhode island.

  • Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
  • The Delaware coast
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Yellow Springs, Ohio
  • Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
  • St. George, Utah
  • Whidbey and Camano Islands, Washington

San Luis Obispo, California

Looking for more ideas, before we go, a few more thoughts.

Now that summer is about to come to a close, here are some great ideas on where you can go to enjoy one last gasp of summer warmth. Here’s your last chance to discover your new favorite beaches, explore some great outdoor markets, sport your warm-weather hiking attire, find your perfect spot on the lake, and simply soak up the extra hours of sunshine.

Wait, summer’s almost over?

Perhaps time really does fly by while we’re having fun. We just get finished talking about trips like the ones on our list of all-American destinations for the Fourth of July , and the back-to-school ads start popping up signaling we only have so many more dog days of summer left to savor.

While some parts of the U.S. enjoy pleasantly warm weather well into the fall, the rest of America may not have much longer before they have to break out their fall/winter clothing and turn on their heaters. With that said, we want to highlight a few special destinations across the nation where you can enjoy one more summer trip. Whether you’re more in the mood for a leisurely road trip or a fast weekend flight, here are our suggestions for a Labor Day weekend trip that won’t cause you too much undue labor.

If you’d like to escape to the New England coast, you might want to ditch the massive crowds at Cape Cod and come up to Portland, Maine, instead. In Portland, you have easy access to some of New England’s finest beaches, including Scarborough and Old Orchard Beach . If you prefer to stay in town, Portland has a very vibrant arts scene , a thriving foodie scene , and bursts of creativity all over Downtown. While Portland feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, it’s only a 100-mile drive from Boston, and Portland has Amtrak train service and a full-service airport .

  • The 10 best road trip apps to make your next journey more epic
  • Do you need a passport to travel in the U.S. in 2024?
  • Grab your mask and fins, and head to the best snorkeling spots in the U.S.

If you want to stay at the center of the action, try the Canopy by Hilton for their chic Luna Rooftop Bar and a convenient location near Portland’s iconic working harbor. Fortunately, late summer is a great time to enjoy some world-famous Maine lobster, and you can always swing by local favorites like DiMillo’s and Highroller Lobster for the freshest seafood you might find anywhere.

While your aspiring influencer friends are flexing like crazy in The Hamptons, you can hang with the “if you know, you know” jet set in Newport. Situated a mere 80 miles south of the city of Boston and 180 miles northeast of New York City , Newport offers a more relaxed yet very luxurious atmosphere with a plethora of historic mansions, scenic beaches , sailing boats , and much more. If you want some quality time at the beach, not only does Fort Adams State Park offer scenic harbor views and a mellow shoreline, but it’s also chock full of early American history . If you’re more in the mood for surfing and boogie boarding, Easton’s Beach (or First Beach) offers better waves and a wider stretch of sand.

If you’re in the mood to get away from it all, you’ll likely enjoy the calm yet sophisticated atmosphere of Castle Hill Inn near Fort Adams. With 40 acres of beautifully manicured grounds, two delectable restaurants, and easy access to private beaches, this might be your new favorite coastal home away from home.

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

In October 1859, John Brown led a rebel party to Harpers Ferry to free the local slave population and wage a bloody battle against those who enforced this heinous form of institutionalized racism. From there all the way to Confederate General Jubal Early’s 1864 (failed) attempt to blaze through Harper’s Ferry in order to attack Washington, Harpers Ferry played a critical role throughout the Civil War. History buffs and nature lovers will love Harpers Ferry National Historical Park for its stunning Appalachian scenery and its rich historical prominence.

These days, Harpers Ferry is also known and loved as a convenient getaway for Washingtonians seeking some solace from whatever’s trending on Capitol Hill. If a mountain retreat sounds more like your jam, the area offers a wide array of campsites, vacation rental cabins, and additional lodging options. If you’re looking for good dining options in town, you probably can’t go wrong at The Rabbit Hole Gastropub (with a robust selection of craft beers) and Kelley Farm Kitchen (with unbelievably yummy vegan food).

The Delaware coast

Who said New England gets to have all the aquatic fun? If you want a Mid-Atlantic beach retreat without the gnarly traffic of the Jersey Shore or Virginia Beach, try Delaware instead. With multiple beautiful beach towns — including Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island — to explore, there’s never a dull moment here. At the same time, it’s incredibly easy to find the perfect beach along the Delaware coastline to sit back, relax, jump in the water, and let all your worries sail away. And if you’re looking for an LGBTQ+ friendly beach town, Rehoboth Beach has recently emerged as a laid-back Mid-Atlantic alternative to the more hectic crowds in Provincetown.

If you want to stay at a great hotel that’s right on the beach, it’s hard to beat the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel in Rehoboth. And if you love seafood, you will probably have a fabulous dinner at Henlopen City Oyster House , where you can feast on oyster shooters, lobster mac and cheese, and plenty more edible delights made with sustainable seafood.

Savannah, Georgia

Heading on down to the steamy South, we land in Savannah. While the city of Atlanta has gradually become Georgia’s most famous city thanks to its economic powerhouse status and celebrity star power, Savannah offers a different side of the Peach State, as well as its own unique charm thanks to its rich historical tapestry, its unique culinary scene, and its eclectically fun style. You can start your Savannah adventure at its famed City Market — where you can find galleries featuring emerging local artists and many of the region’s hottest restaurants — and go on to explore the city’s iconic pocket park squares, its centuries-old architecture, and the cool beaches of Tybee Island .

If you want to taste for yourself why Savannah’s restaurant scene has such an outsized influence over American dining, you probably want to try Repeal 33 and The Grey . If you want a spooky yet swanky place to hang your hat, The Marshall House and Kehoe House are famous for their “haunted house” atmosphere and their many luxurious amenities.

Yellow Springs, Ohio

While it may seem quite off the beaten path, Yellow Springs has cultivated a reputation of beating to its own drum. Yet since it’s only about 60 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati, this western Ohio town is surprisingly approachable. Whether you’re into sampling sophisticated wineries, hunting down rare vintage comic books, tasting locally brewed beers, or wandering through the many more eclectic shops that define the downtown area, you can find plenty to do in Yellow Springs. Even better, Glen Helen Nature Preserve and Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve offer prime hiking and biking opportunities outside.

If you’re hungry after a long day of hiking and/or perusing, stop at the Historic Clifton Mill Restaurant for good ol’ home-cooked deliciousness in a historic setting, as well as Calypso Grill for some surprisingly good Caribbean-inspired fare. For a cozy yet sophisticated inn, try the Mills Park Hotel for a convenient location and comfortable charm.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Less than 60 miles away from Milwaukee — and less than 90 miles away from the Windy City, Chicago — Lake Geneva offers a tranquil escape from big city life and a whole lot of things to do outside. Lake Geneva has four beaches open to the public, ample boating opportunities, a 26-mile long shore path to walk by the lake and numerous historic estates, seven premier golf courses, and the Lake Geneva Ziplines and Adventures complex that’s full of exhilarating surprises. For anyone who wants to take a break inside, Lake Geneva also offers plenty of museums, galleries, theaters, spas, and more.

If you desire a grand stay by the lake, you may want to check out the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa . With five restaurants, two golf courses, a full-service spa, and 356 well-appointed rooms and suites plus a collection of luxury villas, you can easily make a long weekend out of exploring and enjoying this lovely resort.

St. George, Utah

St. George may only be about 130 miles northeast of the bright lights of Las Vegas and about 300 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, yet St. George very much feels a world away from both. Nature lovers can feast on St. George’s easy access to a wide array of national parks and monuments – including Zion National Park , Bryce Canyon National Park , Red Cliffs National Conservation Area , Gold Butte National Monument , Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument , and the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. For anyone who wants to learn more about the region’s history, you can check out the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm and the St. George LDS Temple which was built under the watch of early Mormon leader Brigham Young.

Situated at the foot of Snow Canyon State Park, and nestled inside the upscale Entrada Country Club , The Inn at Entrada offers 57 studios and suites that offer the comfort of a luxurious Las Vegas resort, the seclusion of a small rural inn, and a convenient location that keeps you close to many of the area’s best attractions. For a good meal any time of day, it’s hard to go wrong at Wood Ash Rye , a chef-driven restaurant with global influences that tells the history of Southern Utah in a very creative and edible way.

Whidbey and Camano Islands, Washington

About 30 miles north of vibrant downtown Seattle , Whidbey Island offers gorgeous scenery and an interesting local arts and culture scene that makes it easy to forget how close you are to the Pacific Northwest’s largest metropolis. At Deception Pass State Park , you can enjoy 38 miles of hiking trails, three miles of bike trails, over 14 miles of saltwater shoreline, three lakes, three overnight campsites (that are available by reservation ), and seemingly endless opportunities to get lost and find yourself in Mother Nature. If you prefer a different kind of exploration, Whidbey Island and nearby Camano Island have plenty of galleries , studios, and museums where you can discover captivating works by local artists.

If you’d like to reconnect with Mother Nature while enjoying some shelter from the harsher natural elements, Cama Beach State Historical Park on Camano Island offers 24 rustic cabins by the beach, two larger bungalows, 15 miles of hiking trails, boat rentals through the Center for Wooden Boats, a park store that’s fully stocked with groceries and supplies, the full-service Cama Beach Cafe , and even WiFi internet in select areas.

Nestled right in between San Francisco and Los Angeles on California’s Central Coast, San Luis Obispo (SLO) County offers a scenic escape from big city life and a unique rustic sophistication that you have to experience yourself to believe. If you’re a dedicated wine enthusiast, SLO County Wine Country features some of California’s most captivating viticultural regions, including Edna Valley near the coast and Paso Robles on the north end of SLO County. If you want to explore beyond the vineyards, SLO County offers tremendous wealth in outdoor treasures — from the easygoing Bob Jones Trail that follows San Luis Obispo Creek to Avila Beach, to the quiet grandeur of Montaña de Oro State Park near Morro Bay, as well as the spectacular land and seascape of Ragged Point and the south end of beautiful Big Sur .

If you’re having a hard time picking where you’re most excited about visiting, it might be a good idea to stay in the center of the action in San Luis Obispo . If you want historic charm, it’s hard to beat the Garden Street Inn in an 1889 Victorian house on land that used to be the Mission Vineyard. If you prefer a more contemporary hotel, Hotel San Luis Obispo offers plenty of postmodern California decor, aesthetically comfy rooms and suites, and Chef Ryan Fancher’s creative twist on farm-to-table cuisine at Piadina and Ox + Anchor .

When it comes to planning Labor Day weekend travel, there are so many possibilities besides the 10 we mentioned above. If we tried to include all of the possible awesome Labor Day trsvel destinations on our list, it might take up the entire internet. So, with that in mind, here are a few more possibilities to check out if you get the itch to travel on Labor Day weekend.

Toronto, Canada

With a thriving arts and entertainment scene, not to mention world-class restaurants, Toronto has something for everyone. Sure, you have to cross the border, but it’s an easy drive from the States. While you’re there. check out the views from the top of the CN Tower and for sports fans, the Hockey Hall of Fame is a must-see.

Montreal, Canada

Since we’re already across the border, we would be remiss not to mention sophisticated Montreal as another great Labor Day weekend travel destination. The old city, with its pubs and French restaurants, gives off a Parisian vibe, and make sure to check out the spectacular city views from Mount Royal Park.

Oregon’s wine country

Sure, California gets most of the attention when it comes to wine, but there are some great wineries up the coast in O regon . The Willamette Valley has hundreds of wineries to choose from, and those wineries are producing some quality wines. In 2016, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Oregon’s wine country as one of its Wine Regions of the Year.

Vail, Colorado

Generally, when you think of Vail, Colorado , you think of skiing. And that’s fair, Vail is a world-class ski destination. But when the weather is warm, there’s still plenty to do. You can hit the (grassy) slopes for tubing and Alpine coaster rides as well as zip lines. For those who want a calmer adventure, take a gondola ride to the top of the mountain to admire the scenery.

Labor Day Weekend might mark the end of the summer travel season, but that doesn’t mean we have to be sad about it. Think of it this way: We have one more chance to enjoy summer’s finest offerings in early September, then we can plan for our next round of adventures this fall and winter. We might be inclined to shed a few tears when it’s time to pack away our swimsuits, Hawaiian shirts, and Bermuda shorts, but we have one more opportunity to rock our summer fashion this Labor Day Weekend… Then we can plan where we’ll be sporting our favorite winter attire in the months ahead.

We hope you’ve found this guide helpful, and we hope you’re now feeling more inspired to draw your own exciting Labor Day Weekend travel plans. If you want some more help in figuring out which places to add to your future travel plans, check out these great ideas for road trips in Mexico , our Big Bend National Park travel guide , and our Medellín (Colombia) Travel Guide . National parks have become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting all kinds of nature enthusiasts, adventurers, and families who seek a slice of the great outdoors. However, that may become slightly more difficult as national parks across America begin to implement extra fees and reservation systems in 2024.

In this article, we will look at the changes currently being made in four iconic national parks and what that could mean for you and your crew.

No one likes to be told they’re doing something wrong. However, you can’t fix what you don’t know, and what you don’t know could be costing you big when you’re travel planning. Travel planning typically follows a similar itinerary: You choose a destination and a date, often around your work schedule. Teachers usually select summer. Accountants probably won’t be jetting off anywhere during tax season.

The problem? You’re probably boxing yourself into a specific price tag on flights — even with deals from sites like TripAdvisor and Expedia. Massive flexibility will give you more runway to score deals on the cheapest flights. Obviously, this luxury isn’t available to anyone, but if you have wanderlust and a spontaneous side, read on.

For over 10 solid years, I’ve been traveling constantly. Over the course of that time on the road, I’ve been to all corners of the world, resided almost exclusively out of Airbnbs and hotels, and — for the most part — lived entirely out of a bag or two nearly every step of the way. The only occasions that involved traveling with more bags were the months of road-tripping, and living out of a car or van isn’t exactly far off from minimalism.

With all that travel experience, you’d think that by now, I’d have the entire process streamlined to perfection and have an extensive list of useful travel tips. But while my travels are certainly less stressful than they used to be, there are a few mistakes that I tend to make again and again — maybe not as frequently as I used to, but they still happen. To that end, here are a few travel tips to keep in mind that will help you avoid these all-too-common mistakes.

9 Great Outdoor Labor Day Festivals for Music and Fun

At these Labor Day Outdoor fests, for three sweet days, you can be outside, hike, hear live music, swim, boat, and run. Plus: there's food and beer.

Government-sponsored time off only comes around a few days a year. Labor Day weekend is an opportunity to get outside, hike a lot, see some friends, hear some music, and then sleep in on Monday, to hell with Slack. Festivals are a great way to cram a lot into these three sacred, carefree days.

I’ve covered dozens of festivals over the past decade, and rounded up some of the best, all with great outdoor access, to help you make the most of your long weekend.

1. Bumbershoot, Seattle, Washington

Bumbershoot fest

As large corporations gobble up major festivals, it’s not easy to maintain an event as art-forward, experimental, and strident as Bumbershoot , but the Seattle institution hopes it has finally found the right formula. After a four-year hiatus, the decades-old Bumbershoot is relaunching with a lineup of local stars—like Sleater Kinney, Band of Horses, and Dave B—who’ve made it big. The new fest promises a return to its early creativity and chaos: you will be able to pole dance, roller skate, wrestle, extreme pogo-stick, and explore immersive art.

Bumbershoot arts and music festival

Bumbershoot is an urban festival, but Seattle is spitting distance from Snow Lake, Mount Si, and the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Both Snow Lake and Mount Si have trails through jagged mountain peaks and tall pines, while the six-mile out-and-back Snow Lake Trail wraps around a lake. For a more kid-friendly or relaxing outing, walk along the Nisqually Estuary Boardwalk, a four-mile elevated path that crosses over the top of Nisqually’s tidal flats, allowing seals, sea ducks, salmon, otters and minks to live peacefully underneath.

2. U.S. National Whitewater Center Labor Day Celebration, Charlotte, North Carolina

The U. S. Nati onal Whitewater Center’s Labor Day Celebration is a one-stop shop for outdoor adventure. On the schedule are a 5K and a 15K trail race, stand-up paddleboard yoga, and a Dry Tri with mountain biking, trail running, and kayaking or paddleboarding on the Catawba River. For $75, you can buy an All Access Activity Pass that gets you into the U.S. National Whitewater Center’s renowned river rapids as well as onto the park’s climbing walls, bouldering routes, and ropes courses.

U.S. National Whitewater Center

Evenings bring performances by Amanda Anne Platt, and one of my personal favorite indie Americana bands, The Lone Bellow. (The band’s earnest 2013 ballad “Bleeding Out” got me through high-school drama.)

Not many hikes on the Whitewater Center’s 1,300 acres are longer than a few miles, but Crowders Mountain State Park offers more. Head up to King’s Pinnacle, one of the two summits in the park’s 5,200 acres, via the four-mile Pinnacle Trail , which involves some rock scrambling.

3. Southern Decadence, New Orleans, Louisiana

Southern Decadence , a raucous parade that rolls through the French Quarter, is one of New Orleans’ biggest pride events. Think Mardi Gras but with a little more drag and a lot more leather. I like to watch it all unfold on Frenchman Street, home to some of the city’s great music clubs and close to its LGBTQ+ bars.

Bourbon Club and Parade

New Orleans, however, is not just an overblown party destination. Walk even half a mile out of the French Quarter and you’ll see flowering vines engulfing buildings and oak-lined avenues leading to stellar parks, the biggest of which is City Park. Just 15 minutes from downtown is the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, the country’s largest urban National Wildlife refuge. Its marshland is excellent for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and, with over 340 species of birds, birdwatching. The Joe Madere Marsh Overlook has a picnic pavilion and a boat launch.

4. Marshall County Blueberry Festival, Plymouth, Indiana

Half a million people turn out for the Marshall County Blueberry Festival to celebrate what happens to be my favorite trail snack. About two hours from both Chicago and Indianapolis, hundreds of craft and food booths fill the town’s Centennial Park with blueberry everything—ice cream, cheesecake, smoothies, sausage, and multiple varieties of blueberry beer. (The blueberry donuts are, reportedly, a fan favorite.) This is the most classic Labor Day celebration on our list, with a parade, a carnival, and recreational sports tournaments including pickleball and tractor pulling. It also has fun runs, a bike cruise, and a benefit lake swim.

woman and child running

Plymouth is only an hour from Indiana Dunes National Park , on the banks of Lake Michigan. The park’s best-known hike is probably its 3 Dune Challenge: 552 feet of vertical gain over just 1.5 miles, all in the sand. If you’d rather be able to walk the next day, try the Mount Morse Loop . At nearly six miles, it’s longer, but far less steep, and includes a nice walk along the beach.

5. Mount Snow Brewers Festival, Dover, Vermont

Mount Snow Vermont in summer

If there is anything I learned working as a ski instructor in Vermont, it’s that the best days here involve going to the top of a mountain, coming back down, and then drinking beer as the sun sets. (Well, I prefer cider, but you get the idea.) The Mount Snow Brewers Festival serves a smattering of craft beers from the famous Vermont and New England craft-brewing scenes.

brewfest in VT

Local bands will supply music, and local restaurants will serve beer-appropriate foods. The festival puts you at the base of Mount Snow, a ski area whose trails are busy hiking and mountain-biking paths in the summer. You can easily spend the afternoon before the festival hiking to the top of 3,600-foot Mount Snow, with its view of Snow Lake.

6. Dancefestopia, La Cygne, Kansas

Dancefestopia fest in kansas

In most ways, Dancefestopia is your standard EDM festival. It has a whimsical, Wizard of Oz theme, big-name DJs, and dizzying lights and lasers. But it takes place at what is otherwise a lakeside outdoor-education camp, with all of the log cabins and activities thereof. An activity pass buys you access to the camp’s climbing wall as well as fishing and canoeing.

camping at dancefest in ks

For more of that tree-lined Kansas beauty, check out the further shores of La Cygne Lake and the Marais des Cygne Wildlife Area. You can pick up a fishing license at the Linn County Park Marina.

7. Austin Free Day of Yoga, Austin, Texas

free yoga day

In 2019, Outside magazine declared Austin one of the “ World’s Dreamiest Spots for Outdoor Yoga .” On Labor Day, you can live that dream for free . A coalition of local studios and instructors will offer over 30 free classes, both indoors and out, across the city. There’s Qigong at the Austin Bouldering Project, Kundalini at the Waterloo Greenway, and at least one class billed as a party, the Sukha revival.

young man yoga Austin free yoga day

With the rest of your time, this Texan (I grew up in the greater Houston area) encourages you to indulge in a little Texas cliche. Order some Tex-Mex, or maybe a burger at Clark’s, then head to one of the area’s swimming holes .

8. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cookoff, Sparks, Nevada

Let me save you some confusion. Contrary to what the name suggests, Nugget is not a type of a rib, but the name of the casino sponsoring this extravagant barbecue competition. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cookoff is a big deal in the rib world, and 250,000 pounds of meat will be seasoned and sauced in pursuit of festival glory.

kayakers Truckee River Park

Build up an appetite before you go with a visit to the Truckee River Whitewater Park, where you can kayak over class two and three rapids in the middle of Sparks. Or leave the city and drive 45 minutes south to Lake Tahoe. You can get on a section of the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail at the Tahoe Meadows Trailhead, near Incline Village. Another popular trail is the wheelchair-accessible 1.3-mile Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop through the wildflower-laden Tahoe Meadows.

9. Caveman Music Festival, Weston, Colorado

Monument Lake

Camping at music festivals usually falls somewhere between the glamping of Coachella; the dusty, trippy party tents of Burning Man; and sleeping in your car. Caveman Music Festival , on the other hand, has real tent camping on its shores and fields. It all goes down at Colorado’s Monument Lake Resort, where you can fish for trout, kayak, canoe, and hike in between performances. The music here is Americana, headlined by JJ Grey & Mofro, Shane Smith & The Saints, and Dawes.

The resort is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with a multitude of beautiful hikes. Seasoned hikers can ascend the eight-mile West Spanish Trail near La Veta, Colorado, for some of the best views in the region. Find out about more trails here.

Emily Carmichael is a writer, editor, and former ski instructor based in Brooklyn who has covered music festivals since her college days in New Orleans.

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .

A Proclamation on National Park Week,   2024

America’s natural wonders and historic treasures are the heart and soul of our Nation.  From the high plateaus and deep ravines of the Grand Canyon to the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg and the rolling forests of the Great Smoky Mountains, our national parks unite and inspire us, connecting us to something bigger than ourselves.  This week, we recommit to protecting and caring for all 429 parks and encourage Americans everywhere to enjoy them.

Protecting our national parks preserves their majestic beauty as well as meaningful pieces of our Nation’s history and future.  They contain irreplaceable ecosystems that help sustain the air we breathe and the water we drink, and make our Nation more resilient to the threat of climate change. They give families priceless memories of sharing the great outdoors and exploring our past, and create hundreds of thousands of jobs in recreation.  Many of them help preserve sites and places that are sacred to Tribal Nations, who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.

My Administration has pursued the most ambitious land and water conservation agenda in American history — and I am on track to conserve more lands and waters than any other President in history.  That work began with setting our first-ever national conservation goal:  to protect and conserve at least 30 percent of all our Nation’s lands and waters by 2030 by investing in locally led, voluntary conservation and restoration efforts through our “America the Beautiful” Initiative.  I signed an Executive Order protecting America’s forests and harnessing the power of nature to fight climate change while also launching a new National Nature Assessment to help evaluate the status of our lands, waters, and wildlife.

Since I took office, my Administration has conserved over 41 million acres of our Nation’s precious lands and waters — from safeguarding the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, the Nation’s largest national forest, to restoring protections for the desert buttes of Bears Ears National Monument in Utah.  I established five new national monuments, including Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni on the edge of the Grand Canyon, a place that is sacred to many Tribal Nations, and the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, which tells the story of the events surrounding Emmett Till’s murder and their significance in the civil rights movement.  Just last month, I signed an Executive Order to better recognize and integrate the history of women and girls into the parks, monuments, and historic sites that the National Park Service helps protect.

National parks and the complex ecosystems they contain also help make our Nation more resilient to the existential threat of climate change.  My Administration has made the biggest investment in conservation and climate action in history, including $700 million in our national parks for increased staff and much-needed maintenance.  My Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests in sustaining our lands and waters with projects to protect salt marshes, remove invasive species from sagebrush ecosystems to reduce wildfire risk, and more.  It is helping to build new trails, roads, bridges, and other transportation for our national parks as well, making our parks easier to visit.  It pays for bonuses and training opportunities for over 20,000 wildland firefighters.  Meanwhile, we have been working closely with Tribal Nations to recognize the value of their Indigenous Knowledge and expand Tribal co-stewardship of national parks.  My recent Budget asks for over $3 billion for the National Park Service itself to upgrade park infrastructure, work with Tribal Nations in stewarding and managing culturally significant lands, support youth programs that can lead to good-paying jobs, and more.  Through the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership, the National Park Service is helping to create and renovate parks and outdoor spaces in communities that have been without them for too long.

I encourage everyone to explore America’s national parks — and on April 20, entry will be free. Each time my family and I have visited one, we have left feeling inspired by our Nation’s natural beauty and humbled by the responsibility that we all share to make sure that it endures.  This National Park Week, we recommit to the work of protecting our Nation’s natural treasures for the ages.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 20 through April 28, 2024, as National Park Week.  I encourage all Americans to find their park, recreate responsibly, and enjoy the benefits that come from spending time in the natural world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this nineteenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.                                            JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.
