Best eSIM For Thailand As A Tourist (2024)

' src=

Looking to find the best eSIM for Thailand? You’ve come to the right place.

Visiting Thailand is an unbelievable experience. It provides amazing memories and opportunities – but it can be hard to stay connected at times.

When taking a trip to Thailand, I recommend buying an eSIM. I’ve visited Thailand multiple times and it’s always my go-to way of staying online throughout the country.

Using mobile data roaming packages with your provider from home can quickly get expensive, and eSIMs are a cheaper alternative (and they often have better coverage too).

So to help you out, I’ve put together a complete guide using all my experience to teach you how to find the best eSIM for Thailand.

Best eSIM for Thailand – Airalo

As a full-time traveller, I’ve played around a lot with finding the best eSIM and from my experience, I find Airalo to be the best.

Airalo is the original eSIM store, they were the first eSIM store in the world, and they have eSIMs in pretty much every country, Thailand included.

The thing I find with eSIMs is that they can often be more expensive than buying a real SIM card, but this isn’t the case with Airalo.

Every time I go back to Thailand, I always get an Airalo eSIM . It has never let me down, and I get a strong connection everywhere I go. And I mean everywhere – I took a jungle trek near Chiang Mai and I assumed I would lose connection, but I had 5G the whole way through!

A panoramic view of a hilly village in Chiang Mai with tropical vegetation and scattered houses, under a hazy sky

I’ve recommended them to plenty of friends and family since, and they have all reported back that they had just as good of an experience. Airalo is tried and tested.

They offer a number of packages for visiting Thailand, ranging from 7-day plans to 30-day plans , with a variety of data allowances for each. The cheapest plan (1GB for 7 days) starts at $4.50 and the most expensive is $22 (20GB for 30 days).

I don’t know about you, but I pay more than $22 for my SIM at home, so Airalo is a really good deal. Especially when you consider that you are also saving money , as the other option is to pay huge data roaming charges with your provider.

Mine, for example, charges £5 a day ($6.28). So if I was to pay that for 30 days, I would spend almost $200! With Airalo, it’s $22. It’s a no-brainer if you ask me.

Airalo is also really to use. You simply download the app, choose your package , install your eSIM and then activate it once you arrive in Thailand.

A website interface showing various 'Maew' eSIM data plans for Thailand, with details on data allowance, validity period, and prices in US dollars

The only downside about Airalo is that I haven’t found a way to extend an eSIM, you simply have to buy another one. But I don’t find that to be too big of an issue, it’s just more of a convenience issue.

Another possible downside is that you can’t make phone calls or text messages , as Airalo’s eSIMs are data only, and do not come with a phone number. But when I have purchased physical tourist SIM cards in Thailand, this was the case too.

Personally, I find it more convenient to keep my phone number from home and get an eSIM as I need my phone number to receive verification texts for my bank, for example.

All in all, I can’t recommend Airalo enough. It’s got the best value, a good range of packages to choose from, incredibly good data coverage and it’s very convenient. What more can you ask for?

Other Thailand eSIM Options

While I personally swear by Airalo and recommend them very highly, I understand that you want to have all of the options laid out on the table for you.

Again, as a full-time traveller, I’ve experimented with a lot of different eSIMs, many of which haven’t even made this list.

But there are 3 others which I would say are worth considering . Maybe you’ll find that one of SimOptions, AirHub or Nomad might suit you better than Airalo.

SimOptions is another well-known eSIM store, with plans available in more than 160 countries.

Like with Airalo, the eSIM data plans work out cheaper than paying for international roaming charges with your home provider.

The plans with SimOptions are slightly more expensive though, with the 1GB, 7-day plan costing $4.90 (50 cents more than Airalo), as an example. That’s why when backpacking Thailand on a budget , I always opt for Airalo.

But what I do like about SimOptions, is that they have options to take a plan with calls and SMS text messages included.

A screenshot of the SimOptions website displaying eSIM packages for Thailand, with clear pricing, data limits, and validity periods

So if you need phone calls and text messages for work or something, then it’s worth considering.

From my experience though, it’s easier to just use the likes of WhatsApp which you can use for free. And if you have an eSIM, you will always have a connection to the internet to be able to use WhatsApp.

Top Tip: I would recommend downloading WhatsApp before visiting Thailand as it is how tour companies, bus companies, hotels, etc. like to communicate with you. It’s one of my must-have apps for travelling Thailand .

SimOptions also don’t have the option to top-up , you simply need to buy another eSIM plan again. It can be frustrating if you are travelling for 11 days, for example, as you will need to choose whether to get the 10-day plan and have no data for a day, or get the 15-day plan and waste 4 days.

Nonetheless, SimOptions is a strong alternative to Airalo and I like the fact that they have the option of getting a phone number along with the data plans.

🇹🇭 Buy your Thailand eSIM with SimOptions 📱

Airhub also offers plans which include phone calls and text messages. To be fair to them, some plans are really good value, but I feel like they’re too much.

For example, you can get a 50GB plan which lasts ten days for only $7.99. It’s amazing value, but who is ever going to use 50GB in 10 days? I know I don’t and I’m on social media all the time!

Whereas the 30-day plans are a little worse value than Airalo, in my opinion. You can get as much as 100GB! But again, who is ever going to use that?

My other problem lies with the fact that their website isn’t very user-friendly. Originally, I thought there wasn’t a way to view all of their plans as I had to view an individual plan and see the “related plans” underneath.

A web page displaying a variety of eSIM data plans for Thailand with options for 60GB to 25GB data, including prices and checkout buttons

But eventually, I found a page with all of their plans listed. To make it easy for you, I’ve linked to that page throughout this section.

I also like that they offer plans for Asia generally rather than specific to Thailand. They’re a good option if you are backpacking Southeast Asia , for example.

🇹🇭 Buy your Thailand eSIM with AirHub 📱

My third and final alternative to Airalo is Nomad .

Again, they have a ton of plans and packages to choose from.

For the most part, Nomad actually offers cheaper prices than any other eSIM provider, but from my experience, the coverage isn’t as good and the connection isn’t as strong.

If you are travelling on a shoestring budget and you’re happy to sacrifice your connection quality for a couple of dollars, then Nomad is an option to consider. Otherwise, I personally wouldn’t use it.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s by no means a bad eSIM, but I personally just find it to not be as good as Airalo. It’s just my opinion, other people disagree for sure as they have thousands of positive reviews on Trustpilot .

They do offer unlimited data plans which are pretty neat, although naturally, they are more expensive. But again, unless you buy a really low-data plan, I would say you’re unlikely to hit even a 30GB limit within 30 days.

But if you’re looking to save some pennies, Nomad is the one for you.

Thailand eSIMs Comparison

Now that I have gone through all of the best options for an eSIM in Thailand, I’ve put together some of the most important information into a table so it is clear for you to decide which one is right for you.

Is it worth buying an eSIM for Thailand?

Yes, it is definitely worth buying an eSIM for Thailand.

There are many advantages to buying an eSIM anywhere in the world, and the same advantages apply to Thailand.

Firstly, it’s extremely convenient. All you need to do is download the app, pick your plan, install the eSIM and activate it. It’s very straightforward.

Secondly, it’s an affordable option. If you pay for data roaming on your home contract, you will pay a fortune compared to the price of an eSIM.

Thirdly, it’s cheaper than buying a SIM card at the airport . SIM cards in airports in Thailand are ridiculously overpriced. I fell for it once and I won’t ever pay it again. And it’s very difficult to get from the airport to a store to buy a cheaper SIM card without internet, so it’s easier to buy an eSIM.

Travelers queue at a brightly lit airport SIM card stall with prominent 'AIS 5G' branding above the counter

eSIMs also have incredibly good coverage. I was very pleasantly surprised using Airalo in Thailand by just how good the coverage is. I had better data coverage than what I get back home in the UK.

Lastly, for some people, it’s the only other option. If you are from the US and you have a relatively new phone, you might not have a SIM slot anymore. This means that an eSIM is your only other option unless you want to pay for international roaming fees.

So is it worth buying an eSIM in Thailand? Absolutely.

How to buy an eSIM for Thailand

I recommend using Airalo to buy an eSIM for Thailand.

They have the best prices and in my opinion, the best variety of packages.

Buying an eSIM is very straightforward. You simply go onto Airalo and choose your plan.

Then you download the app, install your eSIM before you get on your flight, and then activate it once you arrive in Thailand.

It’s as easy as pie, and you really can’t go wrong. But if you do, Airalo has amazing 24/7 customer support who can help guide you along the way.

Is it better to have a SIM Card or eSIM in Thailand?

In my opinion, it’s better to have an eSIM . There are a few reasons for this, and I’ll go over each of them briefly.

Firstly, it’s much easier. You land in Thailand stress-free , knowing you are connected to the internet. You don’t have to worry about finding a SIM card from somewhere.

Secondly, it’s cheaper than buying a SIM card from the airport. The SIM cards in Thailand’s airports are super overpriced and the packages aren’t great in my opinion.

A pamphlet listing various prepaid SIM card options for tourists in Thailand, with different data plans and prices clearly displayed

To be transparent, you can probably find SIM cards from phone shops in Thailand for slightly cheaper than eSIMs, but it’s not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Thirdly, some phones don’t have an actual physical SIM card slot anymore in some countries. It’s not the case for me in the UK, but if you have a new phone in the US, you won’t have an actual SIM card anymore , everything is done digitally.

So if you ask me, it’s better to have an eSIM in Thailand than to get an actual SIM card.

Below are some frequently asked questions related to the best eSIM in Thailand along with my expert answers to each question.

The best eSIM coverage in Thailand is Airalo. It has a strong 5G connection throughout all of Thailand, even in remote areas such as jungles in the north of Thailand. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the coverage is.

Yes, you can get an eSIM in Thailand. The best option is Airalo. All you need to do is choose a plan, download the app, install the eSIM and then activate it. It’s very convenient and the data coverage is extraordinary.

The best eSIM card for Vietnam and Thailand is Airalo. You can get a data plan for Asia which covers both countries, or you can get separate eSIMs for both countries. Either way, it’s really simple and convenient and the internet connection is the best.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it, a complete guide to the best eSIM for Thailand.

Remember, my personal recommendation is Airalo . It has the best prices, best coverage, best plans and it’s never let me down.

Thailand is an amazing country to visit, and being assured that you will always have an internet connection helps the trip go all the more smoothly.

Enjoy your trip to Thailand, it’s an amazing country! On the topic of saving money, make sure you also use Revolut while in Thailand to save on currency exchange fees from your bank.

You will find a comparison of the best Thailand e-sim cards with up to date prices as per April 2024 and all the specifications per e-sim card. More info about the advantages and disadvantages of e-sim cards, my recommendation, where and when to order an e-sim card, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for Thailand online.

Ever since 2012 I am continuously traveling the world as a full time travel blogger and nomad  and I get to a different country pretty much every week. Staying connected is one of the first things I always figure about every country I visit. In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards for staying connected when traveling abroad.

The main reason why I started this travel blog was to provide fellow travelers with essential travel tips to help them save money while traveling the world. This is how I started writing sim card guides from every country I visited and now on Traveltomtom you can find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world.

My recommendation

happy tourist dtac thailand esim 2024

Traveltomtom rates the DTAC Happy Tourist 5G as the best e-sim card for traveling to Thailand in 2024.

  • 50 GB data + 100 minutes for 10 days = $9.90 USD
  • Unlimited data + calls + sms for 15 days = $19.90 USD

You can order these e-sim card for Thailand via  Airalo  or  SimOptions .

This DTAC e-sim card for Thailand is 5G ready, where most other Thailand e-sim cards only offer 4G/LTE network speed. There is a 5G signal available at pretty much all tourist destinations in Thailand.

Don't be fooled by offers on websites that show this DTAC e-sim card for Thailand with unlimited data. After 50 GB the data speed will be reduced to 384 Kbps, that is barely enough for using WhatsApp. Basically the same as an E signal.

Traveltomtom does NOT RECOMMEND e-sim cards for Thailand with unlimited data, unless it is specifically specified that UNLIMITED MEANS UNLIMITED. Traveltomtom only recommends e-sim cards with unlimited data is the unlimited data is on max data speed and there is no FUP (Fair Use Policy).

Be careful, many websites offer e-sim cards with unlimited data, but there is a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy) and before you realize you are browsing like on 3G data speed.

The above DTAC e-sim card for Thailand with unlimited data from Airalo  and  SimOptions  is truly unlimited ! Approved, confirmed and tested by Traveltomtom!

Another reliable e-sim card providers is  Nomad , they also sell DTAC happy tourist e-sim cards for Thailand. Nomad only sells the 10 days DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card for Thailand:

  • 50 GB data + 100 minutes for 10 days = $8 USD

Yep, that is correct only for $8 USD instead of $9.90 USD on Airalo and SimOptions.

Click here to order this DTAC e-sim card for Thailand via Nomad .

So out of all the Thailand e-sim card providers Traveltomtom recommends Airalo ,  Nomad  or  SimOptions for buying your e-sim card for traveling to Thailand.

Specifications DTAC tourist e-sim card

The above DTAC tourist sim cards come with unlimited data or 50 GB data Thailand. Unlimited is truly unlimited, no speed cap, all the data is available on max data speed.

The newer versions of the DTAC e-sim cards include either 100 minutes calling time or unlimited minutes in Thailand to local phone numbers. These Happy Tourist e-sim cards also comes with 15 THB international calling credit.

Calling cost 0.99 THB per minute in Thailand and sending an sms cost 3 THB per sms to a Thai phone number. Unlimited calls to other DTAC numbers are included. This e-sim card comes with a Thailand phone number that starts with +66. Receiving phone calls and sms is free.

The validity of the DTAC e-sim cards starts immediately after installation, even if you are not in Thailand. After ordering your e-sim card on the internet you have 30 days to instal the sim card and after installing you can use the e-sim card for either 10 or 15 days.

The following two things are the most important things to know before ordering a Thailand e-sim card, so read carefully!

Unlocked phones only

First of all! Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are unsure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia, Middle East, South America and Pacific tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important! E-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no solution. You simply can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Thailand.

However, don’t worry there is still the possibility to order a sim card for Thailand online. Specifications of the Thailand e-sim cards from Simoptions

SimOptions offers also the DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim cards for Thailand that come with a Thai phone number and they support calling and texting.

The other e-sim cards are a product of SimOptions themselves and they does not give much specific information on their website about these SimOptions data-only e-sim cards for Thailand. These SimOptions e-sim cards for Thailand are NOT 5G ready, only 4G/LTE is supported. It is still unclear if they either use the AIS, True Move or DTAC 4G/LTE network.

These specific e-sim cards from SimOptions are data-only and do NOT support calling and texting and they does NOT come with a phone number. You can't receive calls and text on this e-sim card. The credit validity starts immediately after installing the e-sim card. Even if you are not yet in Thailand. APN settings are available.

For more info about the above Thailand e-sim cards check out the SimOptions website .

What I like about SimOptions is that they have a Live Chat Helpdesk? I already used more than 100 e-sim cards from SimOptions and only had to trouble shoot once. Because of the Live Chat it was fixed in just 3 minutes.

airalo esim card plans for thailand 2024

Airalo is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering an e-sim card through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and what Traveltomtom likes about Airalo is that they specify a lot of information on their website about their e-sim cards.

If you read my recommendation in the beginning you already know that Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Thailand e-sim card via Airalo. For 2024 they have the following e-sim card plans for traveling to Thailand:

  • unlimited data + unlimited calls + unlimited texts for 15 days = $19.95 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for Thailand via Airalo .

The DTAC Happy Tourist Infinite truly is an unlimited data e-sim card for Thailand without any data speed cap.

Normally Airalo sells a wide range of e-sim cards per country, but for Thailand they only sell these two DTAC e-sim card plans.

Specifications Airalo e-sim cards

See my recommendation for more detailed info about the DTAC e-sim cards for tourists. The Airalo e-sim card plans from DTAC start immediately after installation.

For more info check out the Airalo website where they specify everything about their e-sim cards.

Traveltomtom has used Nomad only a few times yet and so far so good. Tested and reviewed, Traveltomtom found Nomad to be a trustworthy e-sim provider. They sometimes have incredibly competitive e-sim card plans and prices.

For traveling to Thailand Nomad has regular e-sim card plans as well as unlimited data e-sim card plans.

nomad esim card plans for thailand 2024

These are the regular Nomad e-sim card plans for Thailand in 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $4 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $11 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $14 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $20 USD
  • 15 GB data for 30 days = $26 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $30 USD
  • 30 GB data for 30 days = $80 USD
  • 40 GB data for 30 days = $110 USD
  • 50 GB data for 30 days = $125 USD

On top of that Nomad also offers the DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card:

Click here to order an e-sim card for Thailand via Nomad .

Nomad also sells e-sim card plans for Thailand with unlimited data. However, unlimited does NOT mean unlimited on max speed. After 2 GB data usage per day the data speed is reduced to 512 Kbps, that is an E-signal, barely good for WhatsApp and you will NOT be able to use social media anymore for 24 hours, until max data speed is restored.

Therefore Traveltomtom does NOT recommend the Nomad e-sim cards for Thailand with 'unlimited' data! more about it later.

Specifications Nomad e-sim cards for Thailand

The Nomad e-sim cards for Thailand operate on the AIS 4G/LTE network only and 5G is NOT supported. The Nomad e-sim card plans have to installed within 30 days after ordering. The expiry of the plan will only start from the first moment the plan connects to a supported network. So even if you instal the plan in your home country, it only starts its validity from the moment you arrive in Thailand and use it for the first time.

For more info check the Nomad website .

The Nomad 1 GB data-only e-sim card is the cheapest e-sim card for Thailand and starts from just $4 USD. This is a data-only e-sim card and any incoming and outgoing calls and sms are not supported. This e-sim card would be just enough to get you through Thailand for a week just using email, WhatsApp and Google Maps.

Why ordering an e-sim card for Thailand

As you have read I pretty much constantly use e-sim cards for traveling around the world. Mind you that I am a full time nomadic travel blogger and that I am on the road constantly and use about 30 - 40 different sim cards every year.

Traveltomtom is on a journey to travel to every country in the world and as of April 2024 I have visited more than 155 countries around the world.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Thailand in 2024. You arrange everything online in just a couple minutes. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards in your phone. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Thailand. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app (Uber is Grab in Thailand), finding nearby friends, restaurants, bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply stay in touch with family back home, check out social media apps on long bus rides or check your banking apps when paying contactless.

So many reasons to stay connected when traveling and it makes your trip to Thailand so much more convenient and fun!

When staying connected we also want to make sure to not waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators are still charge $2 USD per MB, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 25 MB * $2 = $50 USD! Not kidding…

E-sim cards are also the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

International Data Roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, did you read at what speed you can use data roaming while traveling in Thailand? In most cases mobile internet operators limit the data speed for data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed, but there is 5G in Thailand everywhere!

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!”.

Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Thailand. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for Thailand?

You can only buy an e-sim card for Thailand on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Thailand nowadays. After comparing more than 7 e-sim card providers Traveltomtom determined that these are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to Thailand in 2024.

On arrival in Thailand

When you arrive in Thailand and looking to buy an e-sim card for tourists then you will find out that all the Thailand mobile internet providers do NOT offer e-sim cards for prepaid plans. All the tourist sim cards for Thailand come as physical prepaid sim cards. Tourist e-sim cards are still not available as of April 2024.

For the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Thailand in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in Thailand, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network.

How to activate an e-sim card for Thailand

Don’t worry about this, activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible by all the e-sim card providers.

Once you choose your preferred e-sim card plan for Thailand you click on ‘order’. After the payment is processed you instantly receive a QR-code.

You will see a summary of your e-sim order including the QR code on your phone and you will also receive an email with the same QR code, directly after your payment has been processed.

The QR code contains all the information about your e-sim card for Thailand and the only thing you have to do is scan the code with the phone where you want to instal your e-sim card on.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed. Make sure you are connected to the WiFi when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

When to order an e-sim card for Thailand?

You can order an e-sim card for Thailand pretty much any time you want. Some e-sim cards have to be installed within 1 month after ordering, some within 3 months after purchasing, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal your Thailand e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their plan when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of your departure to Thailand. Remember you must be connected to the internet to instal an e-sim card.

Or if you want to maximise your Thailand e-sim card plan then activate your the e-sim card on arrival after you connect to the free WiFi of Bangkok Airport or Phuket Airport or use the WiFi in your hotel.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Thailand

Let me also give you some general tips for using e-sim cards. These general tips do not only apply for Thailand e-sim cards, but are things you need to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card for Thailand without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Thailand. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a pocket WiFi for traveling to Thailand or bring a second unlocked phone with you on your Thailand trip and use it as a portable Wifi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important condition you have to check before buying an e-sim card for Thailand is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest mobile phones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my … phone e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust the online e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Thailand recommended above ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Thailand.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk that you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Can I keep my phone number from home with an e-sim card for Thailand?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Thailand. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. The Thailand e-sim card you can use just for data at the same time to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

If your Thailand e-sim card also allows you to make phone calls and you want to make a local call in Thailand, you simply switch between the sim cards and make a local phone call with your Thailand e-sim card.

Can I make phone calls with an e-sim card for Thailand?

This depends on the type of e-sim card that you order. Some e-sim cards for Thailand support calls and sms, other Thailand e-sim cards are data-only and calling and texting is not supported.

The DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card, the by Traveltomtom most recommended e-sim card for Thailand, supports incoming and outgoing phone calls and sms. You can order the DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card via  Airalo ,  Nomad  or  SimOptions .

Does a Thailand e-sim card come with a phone number?

This also depends on the type of e-sim card that you buy. The e-sims that support calls and sms they come with a phone number. Some data-only sim cards do not support calling and texting but still come with a phone number. These type of e-sim cards can only receive calls, but not make phone calls.

The DTAC Happy Tourist sim card come with a Thai phone number that starts with +66.

All the specifications per Thailand e-sim are stated in my comparison of the best e-sim cards for Thailand above.

Can I use 5G on a Thailand e-sim card?

It completely depends on the type of e-sim card you order. In my comparison of the best e-sim cards for Thailand I specified per e-sim card if you can use 5G or only 4G/LTE network. Sometimes e-sim operators even specify the max data speed.

For Thailand e-sims it is a very easy conclusion that only the DTAC Tourist e-sim supports 5G, all the other e-sim cards for Thailand only offer 4G/LTE max data speed.

You can order the DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card via  Airalo ,  Nomad  or  SimOptions .

Are there e-sim cards for Thailand with unlimited data?

Yes, there are e-sim cards for Thailand with unlimited data. However, this is mostly a marketing tool to make people buy an e-sim card. Always make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed.

A very good example are the Nomad e-sim card for Thailand with unlimited data . It seems like you get unlimited data but when you read the fine print it says that after 2 GB data per day you data speed is reduced. Which basically means data speed as if you are on an E-signal, barely enough for using WhatsApp or checking emails.

They limit (how ironic) the data speed for 24 hours down to 512 Kbps. Also completely useless.

Holafly is an another e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards for Thailand with 'unlimited' data. Holafly does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Thailand e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day as well. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading!

Another reason why I advice you to take a close at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Thailand in 2024 and read all the specifications.

Or simply just go with my recommendation of the 5G ready DTAC e-sim card from Airalo .

Best ways to stay connected when traveling to Thailand

Let me also introduce to you other ways to stay connected when traveling to Thailand. E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Thailand, but there are more options.

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Thailand to avoid roaming charges:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let me explain all the options and compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards for you to make you understand what is your preferred way to stay connected.

buying esim card at bangkok airport

If you use a lot of data a local prepaid sim card for Thailand is probably the cheapest way to stay connected depending on the length of your trip. However, local prepaid sim cards can only be purchased on arrival in Thailand.

There are endless opportunities to buy a sim card for Thailand at Bangkok Airport , check the link for more info and I will tell you if tourists are able to buy an e-sim card for Thailand on arrival at Bangkok Airport or check out my vlog about my arrival and my experiences buying a sim card at Bangkok Airport  in the link.

When in doubt about ordering an e-sim card for Thailand and you want more info about Thailand prepaid sim cards then read my complete guide for buying a sim card for Thailand in 2024 .

The advantage of local prepaid sim cards is that you buy them directly from the mobile internet provider. You get the cheapest prices, unlimited local calls & sms included, the biggest data packages and the fastest data speed. Local prepaid sim cards in Thailand all offer 5G, the max data speed on prepaid sim cards varies a lot per operator though.

orange holiday world international prepaid sim card for thailand

For those who have smartphones that are not e-sim compatible or those who rather put a physical sim card in their phones there are also international prepaid sim cards with data  for traveling to Thailand that you can order online.

You order an international prepaid sim card for Thailand on the internet. A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone during your flight and as soon as the plane touches the ground and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play.

Click here to order an international prepaid sim card for Thailand directly online via SimOptions .

The advantage of an international prepaid sim card is that it often includes calling and texting and e-sim cards are mostly data-only sim cards.

In fact there are two e-sim card options:

  • E-sim cards you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards provided by the Thailand mobile internet providers

The big difference is that e-sim cards provided by the local internet operators in Thailand: DTAC, AIS and True Move can only be purchased in Thailand at one of their phone stores.

However, none of the mobile internet providers in Thailand offer e-sim cards for prepaid plans for tourists, only for postpaid and residents in Thailand are able to get a local e-sim card plan.

Which makes it that if you want an e-sim card for Thailand you will have to order one online from the above mentioned e-sim card providers.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Thailand, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple click. Right here, right now if you want and you are all set for your trip to Thailand. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card? When we compare Thailand e-sim card prices with local prepaid sim cards for Thailand I come to the conclusion that buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Thailand is a little cheaper.

With local Thailand prepaid sim cards you get more data for the same price, so for people that use a lot of GB’s per day an e-sim card will turn out to be a little more expensive.

The downside is that you can only buy a Thailand prepaid sim card after you arrive. So you won’t be able to arrived prepared. On arrival in Thailand you will have to go to a sim card shop and buy a prepaid sim card for tourists.

After a long flight when you just want to go to your hotel that is often a big task and therefore a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Thailand. Faster, easier and less stress!

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth on the mobile data network from one of the main mobile internet providers.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to local prepaid sim cards directly bought from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid sim card.

In case the e-sim card is provided directly by the main mobile network operator like in Thailand for example from DTAC then the above does NOT apply. However, if you for example order a SimOptions Thailand e-sim card then you are last in line at peak times.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding an e-sim card for your trip to Thailand were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison of the best e-sim cards for Thailand it was easier to make a decision and order your e-sim card right away.

That’s why you need to get one of the best eSIM for Thailand. Whether you want unlimited data, or just the cheapest eSim there is, we have them all sorted and reviewed below!

Top Product Overview

Best esim for thailand, airalo (dtac happy tourist esim).

Airola is one of the top global eSim providers. Their coverage and connection speeds around the world are excellent and their customer support is great too. If you are looking for an international eSim , they are a solid bet.

Airalo offers two Dtac Happy Tourist eSim unlimited data plans for Thailand/Bangkok and both are the Dtac Happy Tourist eSim. You can choose to have

  • Unlimited data for 8 days – US$9.90
  • Unlimited data for 15 days – US$19.95

Both of these Airalo eSims for Thailand are super affordable and having unlimited data means you don’t have to worry about limiting your browsing.

There is also the option of buying one of the Asia Plans as well. Such an option is great if you cross borders a lot in Asia. They range from 1 GB (7 days) to 100GB (180 days) and cover these countries: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, China / Hong Kong / Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, and South Korea.

  • Great customer service
  • Reliable coverage and fast speeds
  • Unlimited data makes life easy
  • Very affordable
  • No long term plans over 15 days

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile has some of the best prepaid eSims for Thailand for a whole range of reasons. First, their prices are very competitive at around $2-2.5 per GB. And, they have some amazing Thailand eSims with unlimited data.

All their plans run for 30 days, so there is no confusion there (for a change). They allow data sharing via tethering/hotspot and they offer 5G mobile in Thailand too.

Here are their plans in Thailand:

  • 10 GB – $21
  • Unlimited Thailand – $59
  • Unlimited Asia – $59

And, if you happen to use up all your data, they allow fast and easy top-up. So, you don’t have to fill out all the forms again!

Their unlimited data eSim plan is one of the cheapest at $2/day. Only Holafly’s 99 days for $00 beats it. If you take 3 months of data.

Maya uses the top mobile networks in Thailand , instead of giving you dirt-cheap deals with garbage speeds. They use AIS & Dtac in Thailand with 5G where available.

  • Unlimited data plan
  • Best mobile networks
  • Hotspot allowed
  • All plans 30 days
  • No longer packages

Holafly is in the business of providing unlimited data eSims all around the world.

Unfortunately, their prepaid Thailand eSim options are expensive compared to other eSim providers.

Holafly’s Thailand eSim unlimited data options start at:

  • 5 days for $19
  • 10 days for $34
  • 15 days for $47
  • 20 days for $54
  • 30 days for $64
  • 90 days for $99

Note: we have a 5% discount if you click on these links or use EXPERTWORLDTRAVEL at checkout

When you compare this to Airhub, it is very expensive.

Another thing about a Holafly eSim is that they don’t allow hotspots or data sharing with their unlimited data.

  • All plans are unlimited data
  • Lots of different trip lengths
  • Good connection speeds
  • Easy to set up
  • Solid network coverage
  • Data sharing/hotspots not allowed

Nomad is also a great provider to get a Thailand eSim from . Their coverage and speeds are solid as they partner with Truphone and AIS network providers.

Nomad offers a large range of Thailand eSim plans. You have a total of 5 to choose from all of which are for 30 days.

  • Their smallest data plan is 1GB for $4
  • Their largest is 100GB for $240 ,

both of which are reasonable. There are also lots of plans in between, all costing about $1.5-2.5 per GB. The most reasonable is the 20GB for $30 .

Unfortunately, they do not offer unlimited data options at the moment, but this may change in the future.

My biggest beef with Nomad compared to Airalo though is their lack of warnings when you are about to run out of data or time. Airalo sends great reminders which has saved me more than once from running out while on the road.

  • Affordable prices per GB
  • A nice range of options
  • Good coverage and connection speeds
  • Good customer service
  • No long term plans
  • No unlimited data

Airhub is an eSim comparison website that offers a great range of Thailand eSims for you to choose from.

Their carriers include DTAC and AIS, both of which offer great coverage and speeds in Thailand.

The Airhub eSim options are incredibly affordable. Their two best are 15GB/15 days with some free calling minutes for $9 and 30GB/30 days with some free calling minutes for $17.50.

30GB/30-days or $17.50 is an insanely affordable plan and you probably won’t run out of data either.

  • Comparison of multiple Thailand eSims
  • Ok customer support
  • Super affordable
  • Reliable connection and speeds

UBIGI is a good global eSim provider but they are relatively new and don’t have the partnerships in place to get the more affordable prices other providers do.

Their coverage is good, and their connections are fast and reliable, but they are expensive, especially when it comes to their Thailand eSim. Ubigi has one Thailand eSim plan and it is not cheap.

In fact, if you want a Thailand plan from them, you might as well go with the Asia plan as it is the same price. So, if you happen to cross the border to Cambodia during your trip, you are covered.

  • Reliable speeds and coverage
  • More expensive
  • Only one plan available

MTX Connect

MTX Connect offers a good range of Thailand eSim options and as a provider, they are both fast, reliable, and have good customer support if anything doesn’t work.

But, I have to say, MTX Connect has priced themselves out of the market with their Thailand eSim options and are much more expensive than most of the other providers featured here.

Their data plans start at 350MB/1-day for $3.67 and go up to 10GB/30-days for $63.15 with 7 and 14-day options in between. This is a lot per GB when compared to the likes of Airhub offering unlimited data for $17.50.

  • Simple set up process
  • Nice customer support
  • A range of plans to choose from
  • All plans are expensive
  • No unlimited data options

Mogo is a great provider at first but the more data you use the slower their connection gets, which is a bit cheeky.

Their coverage is great in Thailand and their customer support is good enough, plus setting up their eSim is easy.

But, again, Mogo is expensive when it comes to their Thailand eSim options. Their lowest offering is 1GB/15-days for $4 and it goes up to 30GB/90-days for $60.

While these prices aren’t bad, they are still a long way off the unlimited data plans of the other providers.

  • Broad coverage
  • Easy to buy and activate
  • Good range of contracts
  • More expensive than others

Benefits of Getting an eSim for Thailand

There are a ton of benefits to getting a Thailand eSim compared to using data roaming or a local sim card.

The first is affordability. The prepaid eSim data plans available for Thailand are incredibly affordable, much more so than data roaming and equivalent to a local sim card.

The next benefit of a Thailand eSim is convenience. You can buy your Thailand eSim before you get there and activate it as soon as you get into the country. You will be online in a matter of minutes without having to find a sim card shop, queuing, swapping sim cards, or topping up.

You can also leave your sim card from home in your phone. This saves you from possibly losing it and it allows you to receive texts and calls on your normal home number.

This is so useful especially for things like bank transfers that send you a text to confirm you are not being scammed.

The final benefit of a Thailand eSim is that it is much more eco-friendly than buying a local sim. There is no packaging and you aren’t using a new sim that is made from metals mined in Africa.

Devices Compatible with a Thai eSim

Not all devices work with eSims and this is because eSims are rather new and actually need to be built into your phone or tablet.

An eSim stands for embedded sim card, so it’s not a bit of software, there is a physical eSim card inside your phone or tablet.

Supported devices are generally about 3 years old or less. But the device can’t be a budget smartphone or tablet either, it needs to be relatively high-end to have an eSim inside it. To give you an idea, the iPhone XS is the oldest iPhone with an eSim.

To check if your smartphones are compatible with eSims, simply dial this phone number *#06#. It will bring up all the unique data about your phone up including your IMEI number and perhaps an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number.

If you see an EID number then your phone will work with eSims. The next step is ensuring your phone is unlocked from your network provider. To do this, call your provider and ask, if it is locked, ask them to unlock it – it should only take a few minutes.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Thailand

It is always wise to use an eSim provider that partners directly with local mobile operators in the country you are heading to. The reason being is that the local network operators provide the most coverage and fast connection speeds.

There are 3 local mobile operators allowing the use of eSims on their network and these include AIS, TrueMove H, & DTAC. These are the ones to look out for so you are on the best network with the best coverage.

Some of the best eSims may even allow you to add calling minutes and SMS to your eSim data plan so you can make phone calls and texts too on your Thailand eSim.

Data Needed When Traveling to Thailand

How much data you need from your Thailand eSim depends on how long you are going for and how much data you usually use.

The average data consumption across the globe is about 5GB per week per person but it can be as high as 20 GB per week if you do a lot of Instagramming and Netflix on your phone.

So, how do you work out the amount of data you use every week or month? You should be able to run a report on your phone that tells you this, and it will even break it down by app, showing you which ones are more data-heavy than others.

If your phone doesn’t do this, then you can ask your provider for a report. Once you know how many GB per week you use, choose a data plan to match for your Thailand eSim, taking into consideration how long you are going to be there.

Luckily data packages for a Thailand eSim are super affordable compared to other countries so you won’t have to worry about your data usage too much if you are on a small travel budget. You can get unlimited internet for $20.

Tips for Using eSim in Thailand

Do not activate your thailand esim until you are there.

As you know by now, eSims come with a limited number of days that they are valid for. Once activated, they can not be deactivated.

If you activate early before you get to Thailand, your Thailand eSim will start losing days and you have to add more data to make up for it.

Use Whatsapp

Everyone in Thailand uses Whatsapp to communicate and the great thing about it is that it’s free and it only uses data to make phone calls and receive messages. It is the perfect app for a data eSim and you can make plans with local hotels and tour operators there with it too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i buy an esim in thailand.

You can buy your Thailand eSim from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. Buy it either from the online store or app of your preferred Thailand eSim provider.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Choose your preferred eSim provider and mobile data plan
  • Buy it online or through the app
  • Receive an activation code or QR code via the app or email
  • Download the eSim to your phone by following their instructions

Do not activate your eSim until you are in Thailand or you will start losing the number of days it works for.

How do I activate my eSim in Thailand?

Activating your eSim in Thailand is easy. All your need to do is be connected to the internet and enter your activation code or scan your QR code. You should then be on the internet via your phone within minutes.

What is the best eSim for Thailand?

The best eSim for Thailand in my eyes is either the 30GB/30-day plan from Airhubb for $17.50 or the Airalo unlimited data for 15 days plan for $20.

If you are a heavy data user then the Airalo plan is the way to go. If you can conserve your data and are in Thailand for more than 15 days, go with the Airhub plan.

Known for its world-renowned beaches, mouth-watering food, and ancient temples, Thailand isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Thailand at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Thailand and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Thailand by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Dtac.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Thailand and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Thailand . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Thailand, for example, Airalo works directly with Dtac to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Thailand range from $9.90 to $19.95 and include between 50 GB and unlimited GB of data. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone and it's very quick – in our test, it took us just two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). What's more, if you start running low on data during your trip, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Thailand, Holafly's data packages cost between $21 and $139 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Thailand, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Thailand like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

best tourist esim thailand

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's,

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Thailand or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Thailand?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Thailand, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Thailand. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Thailand without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Thailand are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Thailand is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Thai SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Thai trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Thailand. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Thailand,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Thailand (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Thai networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Thai vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Thailand from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Thailand With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Thailand with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Thailand.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Thailand to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Thailand (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Thai phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Thailand

Are you planning a trip in Thailand, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Thailand, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Thailand, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Thailand overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs. While eSIMs offer the advantage of remotely purchasing a SIM before you travel, making them convenient for frequent travellers, physical SIMs might still be preferable for you if you have an older smartphone model, for example.

No, eSIMs generally aren't free, with the cost in Thailand varying based on mobile service providers and their pricing plans. However, you can generally expect to pay upwards of $9.90 to purchase an eSIM with a minimal data package for Thailand.

Yes, you can use an eSIM on a locked phone, provided your phone is compatible with eSIM technology.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Thailand, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. Choose the Best eSIM for Thailand: Everything You Need to Know

When it comes to looking for the best eSIM for Thailand, you’ll find a multitude of options available that can be difficult to choose between. Taking a moment to understand how eSIMS work and decided if they will be suitable for your trip can save you a lot of time and money in the long run though.

What is an eSIM?

What are the benefits of using an esim, which phones support esim in thailand, factors to consider when choosing your thailand esim plan, best for those expecting low data usage – nomad, best unlimited data plan – airola, easiest to set up – mtx connect, best value – airhub, best esim for thailand – verdict, esim checklist.

An eSIM does everything that a normal SIM card does, but without the need for a physical card.

In a nutshell, a SIM or eSIM is what identifies your phone as yours, by storing details such as your phone number and network provider details.

Traveller using Google Maps on her smart phone, Grand Palace sidewalk, Bangkok, Thailand

While still relatively new, lots of different phone manufacturers have already embraced the switch to a card-free SIM.

Starting with Samsung in 2016, manufacturers have gradually moved to models that provide options for both physical SIM cards and eSIMs.

With Apple’s latest models offering eSIM support only, however, it seems only a matter of time before physical SIM cards become a thing of the past.

The pros and cons of using an eSIM for Thailand are pretty straightforward.

The pros of using an eSIM:

  • Security – There’s no risk of losing your SIM card or having it stolen if it’s part of the phone.
  • Rewritable – You can switch networks just by getting in touch with them.
  • Space for up to five different numbers – No need to carry an extra business phone. Each number can even belong to a different network to one another.
  • Great for travelling – This is what makes using an eSIM in Thailand such a good idea. Simply switch to a local network while over there to save money on heavy data roaming charges from your home network.
  • You can sort it all out before you leave home so you don’t spend the first hour of your trip getting a new sim card and if you are like me figuring out how to insert it!
  • You need to have a newer model phone that supports eSIM usage
  • If your device stops working for any reason you can’t just pop out the sim and put it in another device. Although if this does happen you can easily buy a new sim card on arrival.

Most manufacturers’ flagship models have supported eSIMs for some time now.

If you’re unsure if your phone will accept one, a quick glance through the documentation that came with it should yield an answer.

4 Apple Phones

If you own one of the following popular phones, though, then you can be sure that it can take an eSIM.

  • Apple iPhones throughout the range from the XR and XS onward (11,12,13,14,SE2 and SE3). This includes all Pro, Mini, Pro Max and Plus variants.
  • Most Samsung Galaxy models from S20 onward (S21, S22 and beyond) This includes all +, Ultra and 5G variants (Be aware that the S20 FE and S21 FE DO NOT accept eSims)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note S20 models including FE, +, Ultra and 5G variants
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, Z Fold 2 and ZFold 3
  • Google Pixel models throughout the range from 3 onwards (4,5,6 and 7). This includes all XL, Pro and A variants.

Even if your phone is listed above, it’s recommended to double check its compatibility with local mobile operators before purchasing an eSIM.

Some models purchased in different countries or locked to particular networks may not support one.

Physical sim cards

There’s plenty of other phones that can accept eSIMs apart from the ones listed too, so it’s definitely worth checking to see if you can benefit from one.

When choosing your Thailand eSIM, you should take into account all the factors that you would for your everyday network provider.

Using a smartphone on the beach in Thailand

Make sure that you’re happy with the following before you buy –

  • Network coverage – An eSIM is little use if the network it belongs to struggles for coverage in the area that you’re visiting. Some networks show coverage maps on their sites which you can check before you decide to purchase.
  • Network speed – This can go hand-in-hand with coverage, but check to see if they can offer quicker data services such as 4G and 5G.
  • Data caps – If you’re just going to be texting and ringing other people in Thailand, you may not need a great deal of data. Most people will probably want to ring and send photos to their friends and family back home. This can use data, and cost you a significant amount if you exceed your allowance. Find out how much you use at home, and add a little extra for those videos and snaps you’re bound to send. You could also consider unlimited data plans.
  • Contract length – Many Thailand eSIM providers offer short-term contracts perfect for visitors. Take heed of the contract length to ensure you don’t pay for more than you need.

Best Thailand eSIM providers

Let’s do some eSIM comparison and look at the major providers in the Thailand eSIM market. These review details are current as of April 2023, so please check with the operator for any updates before you travel.

With prices starting from 4 USD for a 1GB plan spanning 30 days, Nomad’s rates are hard to beat. They offer superb coverage and solid speeds in Thailand, so you’re unlikely to find yourself out of range.

They also offer a range of plans for those hungry for more mobile data, typically more data costing around $2 per extra gigabyte.

As one of the largest names in international eSIMs, Airola provides great speeds and coverage. Their customer service is second-to-none too, making it a reassuring partner to travel with.

Unlimited data for 8 days will cost you 9.90 USD, while the 15-day option is 19.95 USD. Keep in mind that speeds can drop once you use 15GB though.

Those likely to cross borders into other countries might be interested in their dedicated Asia plans instead, which cover several nearby countries.

MTX Connect’s Thailand eSIM is a cinch to set up and start using. Its customer service is great, and the coverage is solid.

The only reason you might be dissuaded from using them is their relatively high prices.

You’ll have to pay 66.76 USD for 10GB over 30 days with MTX Connect, a price that’s multitudes higher than their competition. They do, however, provide contract options as short as one day, which may work for some.

Rather than a provider in itself, Airhub is a site that compares prices from carriers such as dtac and AIS. As such, you can find a variety of plans between the two of them, with variations in data caps, contract periods affordable prices and much more to suit you.

AIS’s 30-day plan with 30GB of data looks fantastic value at 14.50 USD, with dtac’s similar 15-day offering costing a mere 9 USD also.

With so many differences in eSIM data plan caps, data packages and contract lengths, choosing one network that will suit everybody is a near-impossible task. That being said, most people should find something from the quartet above that works for them.

Couple using a phone in an airport

Airhub in particular is a great place to start your search, with several options available to those wishing to use an eSIM in Thailand.

From there, you can decide whether an easy set-up, unlimited data, or low costs are most important to you, and compare the prices and plans you find.

Work through these questions and decided on the best eSIM for your needs.

  • Check the list of supported devices and make sure you
  • Determine what level of internet access you need and if you want unlimited internet for your trip. Check how much data you use at home and add 30%.
  • Look at where you are travelling and which eSIM providers have the best coverage for the regions you plan to visit.
  • How many people are you travelling with? Do you want to share data? Does the eSIM you have chosen allow data sharing?

We hope our eSIM Thailand review has helped you decide if a physical sim card or an eSIM provider is the best choice for when you travel to Thailand so you can stay connected and avoid public wifi networks while you are travelling.

Top Thailand eSIM options for travelers in 2024

1. unlimited data plans.

Unlimited data plans are a popular choice if you require a high amount of data usage during your stay in Thailand . These plans offer the freedom to use mobile data without worrying about running out or incurring additional charges.

Key features and benefits of unlimited data plans:

  • High-speed data
  • Wide network coverage
  • No data usage restrictions

The bolded package options in the table mean it’s a TRULY UNLIMITED package with no speed limitations after using a certain amount of data.

Why we recommend unlimited data plans

Despite the higher upfront cost compared to limited data plans, unlimited data plans can offer better value for money.

In addition, all of the above-recommended ( Thailandesim , Airalo , SimOptions ) unlimited data plans offer a local phone number with free calls and allow hotspot/tethering (data sharing between devices), which is a seriously good deal.

We used to recommend Holafly for unlimited eSIM data plans in Thailand, but as of 2024, they are extremely expensive compared to other options. This is especially true since they don’t allow hotspots (sharing data between devices) or a local phone number.

For some countries, Holafly is a great choice, but for Thailand, unfortunately not.

2. Budget-Friendly Packages

For budget-conscious travelers, several Thailand eSIM providers offer affordable data packages.

Key features and benefits of budget-friendly eSIM packages:

  • Flexible validity: shorter validity with more data or longer validity with less data
  • Lower upfront cost: top-up as needed

As the below comparisons show, the cheapest Thailand eSIM is the Airalo 7-day 1GB plan for $4.50 or the Thailandesim 3-day 3GB plan for $4.90.

2.1. Thailadesim Budget Plans

As the table below shows, shorter-duration packages at Thailandesim can be cheaper, but only when you don’t need much data. Otherwise, the unlimited data plans are much more worth it.

Thailandesim discount

Use the code SHIPPEDAWAY on checkout to claim a 5% discount on your eSIMs.

2.2. Airalo Budget Plans

Next up are Airalo’s budget plans , which are a great deal if you don’t need a lot of data.

You can score a 30-day plan with 5GB for only $10.50, or double that, and for $22.00, you get 20GB .

Airalo is a clear winner in terms of budget eSIM plans for Thailand.

Airalo discount

Use the code MATEJ1033 to claim a $3 discount on your first Airalo eSIM purchase.

2.3. SimOptions Budget Plans

SimOptions doesn’t offer a wide selection of budget plans compared to other providers, although the 10-day 50GB option, which costs $12.90, isn’t a bad choice at all.

3. eSIMs with local phone numbers

Having a local phone number can greatly benefit your stay in Thailand.

Key features and benefits of eSIMs offering local phone numbers:

  • Local communication: With a local phone number, you can easily communicate with local contacts, businesses, and service providers, ensuring a smooth and convenient experience – tour operators, hotels, etc.
  • Access to local apps: Having a local phone number provides you access to local apps, like Grab (Uber), so you can also receive and make calls when hailing a ride, ordering food, or similar.
  • Cost savings: With a local phone number, you can make local calls without incurring long-distance charges.

It’s important to note that not all packages are the same, so some may include a phone number with unlimited calls, while others are data-only.

4. Long-term packages for extended stays and digital nomads

The providers we recommend offer eSIM options for extended stays in Thailand or for digital nomads who require long-term mobile internet access.

But we generally recommend buying a local package at stores of AIS, TrueMove, or DTAC.

Their long-term packages offer better value for money and plenty of top-up options. Plus, they can be a bit cheaper than the tourist offers when you plan on staying for two or more months.

However, if you’re staying for only a month, we highly recommend just getting the 30-day unlimited package by Thailandesim for $34.90 or the Airalo 30-day plan for $22.00, which gives you 20GB.

Benefits of regional eSIM plans

In addition to all the above-mentioned benefits, eSIMs are perfect for multi-country trips, especially when traveling to Thailand and Southeast Asia, where it’s more common to visit multiple countries on one trip.

You can buy a South East Asia eSIM package , which, in addition to Thailand, gets you online in nearby countries like Vietnam , Cambodia , Malaysia , and Singapore .

Otherwise, if you buy separate eSIM packages for each country, it’s still quite straightforward to switch between different eSIM profiles without switching physical SIM Cards.

Personally, we prefer buying separate packages, as we usually stay for a longer period in each country. Otherwise, for shorter trips involving multiple countries, the combo package provides a better value for money, with still enough data at each destination.

Thailand eSIM Step-by-Step Activation Guide

Activating your Thailand eSIM is a simple process that can be done in a few easy steps. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you activate your eSIM:

Time needed:  15 minutes

Select a reputable eSIM provider that offers data plans suitable for your travel needs in Thailand.

Visit the eSIM provider’s website and choose the data plan that best suits your requirements. Add the plan to your cart and proceed to checkout to complete the purchase.

After your purchase is complete, you will receive an email containing a QR code from the eSIM provider to your email address. Keep this email accessible on your device.

On your device, open the camera app and scan the QR code received from the eSIM provider. This will activate the eSIM and initiate the download of the necessary eSIM profile. If you’re wondering how to do this on the phone, just save the QR code image or take a screenshot of it, and then tap on it in your photo gallery. It should scan it.

If you can’t scan the QR code, follow the manual steps for adding the eSIM to your phone. It’s very straightforward and shouldn’t take a long time either.

Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the activation of the eSIM profile. This may involve entering a confirmation code or selecting the appropriate settings on your device. Sometimes, you need to send a text message to the provider’s provided phone number to activate the eSIM. Ensure that your device has a stable internet connection for the initial activation process. We usually do this at the departure airport before flying into Thailand, so as soon as we land, we’re online.

In your new eSIM plan settings, enable Data Roaming, otherwise it won’t work. Don’t forget this step!

When you enable data roaming, make sure to turn off “Cellular Data Switching”; otherwise, the phone might switch to your home plan if the eSIM loses connectivity. This is usually something that rarely happens, but it’s possible in elevators of skyscrapers, where the connection drops. So, if your home plan gets connectivity first, it might cause extra costs.

Make sure to set the new eSIM plan on your phone as the primary one for mobile data. This way, your home plan won’t be used for data, but it can still receive texts and phone calls. Otherwise, remember to remove or disable your physical SIM card while using the eSIM to avoid any conflicts or additional charges.

Once the eSIM activation is complete, you can start using your Thailand eSIM to access mobile data. The validity period usually starts when the eSIM connects to the local network’s cellular data. But make sure to check this, as sometimes it starts right after installation (Steps 5-6-7).

However they have famous traveler SIM service named “ SIM2Fly ” which is familiar, because they provide SIM2Fly products to many different eSIM providers.

AIS official website also sell these traveler SIMs and eSIMs, but it’s quite complicated for travelers to purchase and register. If you are familiar with Thai language, you can try to book it on AIS, but as we mentioned before, buying eSIM from online traveler eSIM specialized provider might be more easier for most of the travelers.

13.  True

True is another Thai local carrier along with Dtac and AIS. As other major local carriers do, they mainly offer service for local Thai people. Also, in their official website have English version, but it doesn’t fully translated to English, so it might hard for travelers outside from Thailand to get information about eSIM directly from them.

However, since it’s local carrier, if you use SIM card or eSIM in Thailand, you might be connected to True network while using mobile data with your phone or electronic device.

  • If you see multiple available networks, your phone is likely unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
  • If only one result is displayed, or the option to search for networks is unavailable, your phone might be carrier-locked. In this case, you’ll need to contact your domestic carrier to unlock your phone before using an eSIM.

Which eSIM is best for Thailand?

The most affordable and high-speed data plans on eSIM Thailand are available for purchase. We offer a diverse range of plans, spanning from global coverage to specific cities, with varying durations of validity.

Just follow straightforward, three simple steps to buy the perfect eSIM:

  • First, choose the data plan that best suits your travel needs.
  • Second, securely complete your payment using the trusted PayPal payment gateway.
  • Finally, receive your QR code via email in as little as 15 minutes.

Do the eSIM Thailand plans support voice calls and SMS?

The availability of a local number for calls and messages depends on the plan you purchase. To have a local number, consider the Fixed, Infinite, or City plans. With the Fixed and City plans, you’ll receive a complimentary 15-baht credit for calls and SMS, which can be topped up when depleted. The Infinite plan offers unlimited calls to all networks in Thailand and also includes a 15-baht free credit for calls and SMS.

When should I buy and activate the eSIM?

You have the flexibility to purchase the eSIM at your convenience. However, be careful with installing it as the validity period varies depending on the plan.

  • For Fixed, Infinite, and city plans , the validity period begins immediately upon eSIM installation on your device.
  • Strong Wi-Fi Connection: To ensure a seamless eSIM activation, it’s important to have a dependable internet connection. By activating your eSIM before your trip, you do not need to hunt for Wi-Fi, guaranteeing a hassle-free experience.
  • Validity Period: The countdown for plan validity initiates as soon as the eSIM connects to the local network. You have the option to scan the QR code and install the eSIM in advance. Keep in mind that 24 hours is counted as 1 day, and this counting begins continuously from the moment of service activation.

Can I reinstall the eSIM?

Once an eSIM plan has been installed, it cannot be reinstalled or reissued. If you encounter any issues, we kindly request that you refrain from deleting the eSIM. Instead, we strongly encourage you to contact us first at [email protected] .

Certainly, you can effortlessly keep track of your data consumption by accessing your device’s Settings. However, for precise data usage details, please get in touch with us at [email protected] .

Which is the ideal eSIM package for Thailand?

Selecting the ideal eSIM package for your needs in Thailand involves considering factors like data requirements, coverage area, and the duration of your stay. Here are some options:

  • eSIM Thailand Unlimited Plans: These plans provide unlimited data at reduced speeds (384 kbps) once you’ve used up your high-speed 4G LTE data, with various validities from 1 to 30 days.
  • eSIM Thailand Fixed Plans: These plans offer consistent 4G LTE/5G connectivity with data allowances ranging from 50GB to Infinite. Validities are available for 10 or 15 days, making them suitable for those who need a local number for calls and messages.
  • eSIM Sing-My-Thai Unlimited: Ideal for travelers visiting Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia, providing coverage in all three countries.

Before making your decision, we recommend thoroughly reviewing the details and terms of each eSIM plan. If you need personalized assistance in choosing the perfect plan, don’t hesitate to contact the eSIMWorld team at [email protected] .

How long should I wait for the eSIM QR Code after payment?

Upon completing your payment, our QR code is automatically sent to the email address provided in the order form within 15 minutes. If you haven’t received the eSIM QR code within 15 minutes, please follow these steps:

  • Check Your Spam or Promotion Folder: Your email may have been filtered into the spam or promotion folder. Please check these folders.
  • Contact Us for Assistance: You may have a typo in the email address you provided to us. In this case, please contact us at   [email protected] , so we can resend it to you as soon as possible.
  • Payment Processing Delay: If you used iDEAL or a payment method other than PayPal, there may be a delay in the payment transfer to PayPal. The timeframe for this process depends on the payment gateways. We recommend contacting them directly for assistance.
  • PayPal Security Measures: In some cases, your payment might be pending due to PayPal’s security checks, which can take up to 72 hours to complete. While the timeframe is uncertain, it is a part of PayPal’s security policy. For assistance with this, please contact PayPal’s customer service.

Please be aware that even if you paid with a credit or debit card, the payment is processed through PayPal, which may subject it to PayPal’s security checks and possible pending status. It is advisable to reach out to PayPal’s customer service for further assistance.

How can I confirm the activation status of my eSIM?

To ensure your eSIM is activated, you can rely on the following two indicators:

  • Check for eSIM Profiles: Access your device’s eSIM settings, where you will find a list of available profiles or plans. If your eSIM is successfully activated, you will notice an active profile without a phone number listed among the available options.
  • Signal and Connectivity: Once your eSIM is activated and connected to a cellular network, you should see signal bars or connectivity indicators in your device’s status bar. Additionally, you may spot the carrier name associated with the eSIM, confirming both its activation and network connection.

Should I turn off my original SIM?

We strongly advise turning off your original SIM to prevent incurring data roaming charges from your domestic carrier while utilizing the eSIM. Deactivating your original SIM ensures that your device solely relies on the eSIM for data connectivity in your travel destination.

However, if you still require the ability to receive calls and SMS on your home number when using the eSIM, you can keep the original SIM active. In such a scenario, we recommend disabling the “Automatic Cellular Data Switching” feature on your device. This precautionary step helps prevent unintentional data usage, ensuring that data traffic is directed through the eSIM plan rather than the original SIM.

What should be done if the message "No network" appears after eSIM plan activation?

If you encounter a “No network” message after successfully activating your eSIM, please follow these troubleshooting steps:

  • Enable Data Roaming: Ensure that [Data Roaming] is turned on for the eSIM plan. Typically, you can find this setting in your device’s network or cellular configurations. Without data roaming enabled, your eSIM might be unable to connect to the network.
  • Restart Your Device: Try rebooting your phone to refresh the network settings and establish a connection with the eSIM network.
  • Try manual setting for APN/Network: You will receive instructions for setting them up after payment. Follow the provided instructions meticulously to input the accurate APN information into your device manually.

If these steps have been taken and issues persist, do not hesitate to reach out to our support team at [email protected] for further assistance.

Can I keep my Whatsapp number?

Certainly, you can retain your WhatsApp number, including all your conversations and contacts, when using an eSIM.

Can I request a refund after a purchase?

Unfortunately, we do not provide refunds for eSIMs that have been activated and utilized for data. Once the eSIM has been activated, and data consumption has occurred, it falls within the scope of our policy, which does not allow for refunds in these cases. We strongly urge customers to carefully review their plan details before proceeding to avoid any possible inconveniences.

Best eSIM for Thailand

As technology advances, travelling abroad has become easier and more convenient with the use of eSIMs. This is especially true for Thailand, where the best eSIM for tourists is undoubtedly Airalo .

In this blog post, we’ll explore what eSIMs are, why they are beneficial for tourists in Thailand, and how to purchase an eSIM in Thailand.

Table of Contents

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is embedded within a device. It works the same as a physical SIM card, allowing users to connect to multiple cellular networks and access data, calls, and message servicing apps.

Unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM does not require swapping out or inserting a new SIM card. Instead, the eSIM is downloaded and activated on your device.

Why is an eSIM beneficial for tourists in Thailand?

When travelling to Thailand, tourists often face the issue of purchasing a local SIM card to stay connected to cellular networks.

However, this process can be time-consuming, as it requires finding a reliable seller, purchasing the SIM card, providing your passport to register the SIM, and activating the SIM card.

With an eSIM for Thailand, you don’t need to do any of the above.

Instead, you can simply purchase and activate an eSIM on your device without visiting a physical store or navigating the language barrier.

Additionally, Airalo eSIMs for Thailand provides unlimited data plans, ensuring that tourists have constant access to the internet throughout their trip.

What is the best eSIM for Thailand?

Airalo currently offers 2 x Data Packs for Thailand eSIM .

Both plans offer UNLIMITED data! In addition, both plans are very affordable, especially when you consider there is no cap on data usage. It’s the best eSIM card Thailand has to offer.

These eSIMs for Thailand offer you fast and reliable internet access throughout your stay in Thailand.

How to buy esim thailand.

The process for how to buy eSIM Thailand card or data pack is easy.

Important:  Your device must be compatible with eSIM. Please  check this list to see if your device supports eSIM  before purchasing an eSIM for Thailand.

Then, you can purchase an eSIM online through the Airalo website.

Download  the Airalo app , and purchase a data package.

You can choose the 8 Days Data Pack OR 15 Days Data Pack for Thailand.

Follow the steps to activate the eSIM for Thailand just before you arrive (remember that the data pack starts from the activation date).

A Few Tips:

  • Before arriving in Thailand, switch from your current mobile provider to the Thailand eSIM provider. Don’t worry; there is a step-by-step guide on how to do it during installation.
  • Most importantly, once your eSIM card is activated, make sure to turn off data for all apps you don’t use, and those who can use a lot of data. Apps such as  Instagram,  TikTok, and Netflix will eat up your data fast, so don’t access that until you reach your hotel and access the free wifi.
  • And, if you want the freedom to instantly send those videos home to friends and family of you exploring Bangkok by night on a guided tuk-tuk tour or the highlights from your Island Hopping Tour in the Phi Phi Islands , the best eSIM for Thailand works like a dream.

And, if you want to extend your stay in Thailand (which is highly likely, because it’s an awesome destination), then you can just buy another eSIM for Thailand on the Airalo app within minutes. Too easy!

The 5 Best eSIMs for Thailand in 2023

Thailand (formerly Siam) is a glamorous country in South-East Asia bordered by Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Malaysia. The capital, Bangkok, has the exciting street life of a modern city, combined with palaces and sacred temples. About 80% of the 70 million Thais (Thailand natives) live on the large central plains by the Chao Phraya River.

The country´s economy is based on the production of rice, refined sugar, latex, tin, and steel.

Thailand is an excellent place for tourism, with beautiful tropical beaches, royal palaces, ancient constructions, historic ruins, and religious temples. You will not regret vacationing in this gorgeous paradise.

In this article, we will tell you the best way to stay connected in Thailand: using an eSIM .

These are the 5 top destinations in Thailand:

Bangkok, the amazing country´s capital, is full of history, offering visitors a great number of fantastic places to enjoy. A dazzling street life with a combination of skyscrapers, markets, palaces, and temples makes a delightful time for tourists.

One of the most popular attractions is The Grand Palace, dating from the 18th century and housing The Temple of the Emerald Buddha; don´t miss the marvelous Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), on the west side of Chao Phraya River, built in 1768. If you feel like shopping, the place to visit is the huge outdoor Chatuchak Weekend Market, where you will find whatever you are looking for.

The city of Chiang Mai, situated way up north in Thailand, was a cultural and religious center and is still home to a great number of Buddhist temples. Founded in 1296, it holds Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, from the 14th and 15th centuries. You can also visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, showing seven beautiful statues with serpent heads.

Some other interesting temples to visit are Wat Umong Suan Phutthathan, Wat Suan Dok, and Doi Suthep. You may take a break from visiting temples (there are plenty more) and do some shopping on Tha Phae Walking Street.

History lovers will find a very interesting place when visiting the ancient city of Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok. Once the prosperous capital of the Kingdome of Siam, back in the 14th century, it was destroyed and set to ruins by the Burmese in 1767. The ruins have become the historical Park of Ayutthaya, protected by UNESCO.

Visit the Wat Mahathat, considered the most sacred temple in Thailand, from the 14th to the 18th centuries, where Siddhartha Gautama once meditated. Don´t miss the monastery Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, built in 1357, and featuring lots of sitting Buddha statues around the temple. Wat Phanan Choeng houses an impressive 19-meter-high seated Buddha, from the 14th century.

Koh Samui is a fantastic tropical island located on the Thailand Gulf, characterized by a great number of gorgeous palm beaches, luxury resorts, hotels, dense jungles, and rainforests, along with amazing sunsets. Visit Lamai Beach, with kilometers of palm trees, clear water, and dazzling nightlife; or Bo Phut Beach, with plenty of hotels and beautiful views. Wat Plai Laem is a modern Buddhist temple worth visiting. If you are a jungle fan and love exotic animals, discover Ang Thong National Marine Park.

The island of Phuket has become an ideal place for traveling on vacations. It is connected by a bridge to the rest of the country and is home to an international airport. One of the main attractions in the city is The Great Buddha of Phuket, a seated, 45-meter Buddha statue made of concrete and covered with white marvel. It was built between 2002 and 2012 and is located at the top of Nakkerd Hill.

A great place to visit in the old town is Thalang Road, offering colorful Sino-Portuguese buildings and prosperous store-houses and markets. Visitors will enjoy fantastic Phuket beaches like Panwa Beach, great for snorkeling; Patong Beach, with crystal-clear waters and plenty of bars and restaurants; or Nai Harn Beach and its amazing palm trees.

Various Thailand eSIM Options

eSIM Thailand

The majority of eSIM providers in Thailand offer comparable packages in terms of speed, with the main distinction being the number of packages and their prices. This article highlights the top eSIM packages for tourists in Thailand.

Thailandesim.com

Thailandesim.com, a subsidiary of the Vietnam-based GIGAGO company, is an eSIM provider catering specifically to tourists in Thailand. Despite being a newcomer in the market, it has a competitive edge due to its focus on the Thai market, offering a variety of packages to suit different customer needs and budgets. Thailandesim.com offers the most extensive range of eSIM packages, with 13 different options based on the duration of your stay and your data requirements.

Holafly is another eSIM provider for tourists in Thailand, with a significant market presence and products available in over 190 countries and regions. They use the 02 networks, DTAC and TrueMove H in Thailand, providing internet access in most areas, including urban, rural, and remote locations. Holafly offers only Unlimited packages, but it's important to note that there's a limit to the amount of high-speed internet you can use before the speed decreases.

Airalo, another eSIM provider, has been in the market since 2019 and offers eSIMs for over 200 countries and regions. They have an app for customers to purchase, use, and manage eSIMs. In Thailand, Airalo uses the DTAC network, offering fast and stable network speeds. They offer 8 eSIM packages for Thailand, but only 2 are exclusively for Thailand, while the other 6 are for regions including Thailand. This could be expensive for tourists who only visit Thailand and do not travel to other countries.

Nomad is a global eSIM provider that caters to short-term travelers, frequent travelers, and those who visit multiple countries in one trip. To use Nomad's eSIM, you simply visit their website, select your destination, and choose the appropriate eSIM package. Nomad uses the AIS network, one of the top 3 networks in Thailand. However, like Airalo, Holafly, and Mobimatter, Nomad only provides data eSIM packages, not local phone numbers, and their prices are relatively high compared to other providers.

What is an eSIM ? Easy Explanation for Beginners

eSIM Thailand: What is an eSIM

Basic information about the eSIM

An eSIM , or Embedded SIM, is different from a traditional physical SIM card. It refers to an electronic SIM that is built into the device. In Japan, eSIM-compatible devices were introduced in 2018, and since then, the number of users has been rapidly increasing. Unlike traditional SIM cards that need to be physically inserted into the device, eSIMs do not require a card to be inserted or removed . It's a revolutionary system that allows you to freely connect to the internet abroad, including in Thailand, by simply downloading or deleting SIM information in the device.

Use it right away in Thailand! How to set up Thailand eSIM

eSIM Thailand: How to Use

1. Please check if your device supports eSIM .

2. Go to "Settings" > "Mobile Data" > "Add Mobile Data Plan" on your device.

3. Scan the QR code (if you cannot read the QR code, please manually enter the "SM-DP +Address" and "Activation Code").

Which is Convenient in Thailand? Thailand eSIM , SIM Card, Wi-Fi Router

eSIM Thailand: In-depth comparison of eSIM, SIM card, and Wi-Fi router

Difference between eSIM and SIM card and Wi-Fi Routers

  • Eliminates the risk of losing or damaging a SIM card, as the eSIM is embedded within the device.
  • Activation can often be completed before arrival, simplifying the process.
  • Designed for instant connectivity upon reaching your destination.
  • Only compatible with certain smartphones, restricting use to newer models.
  • May not support traditional phone number use, affecting calls and SMS capabilities.
  • Unlike a Wi-Fi router, SIM cards don't need to be charged, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
  • Users have the flexibility to choose from an array of plans to fit their communication needs.
  • Requires a SIM-unlocked smartphone to operate, limiting use with carrier-locked devices.
  • Initial setup might require time and effort, including PIN entry and activation procedures.

Wi-Fi Routers

  • Simply set up upon arrival and connect multiple devices, offering internet access to a group.
  • Ideal for travelers with multiple gadgets or groups needing shared access.
  • The need to recharge the router can limit mobility and accessibility.
  • Picking up and returning the device can be inconvenient, alongside potential extra costs for the service.

Thorough Comparison SIM cards can be used without worrying about charging, like a Wi-Fi router. They are light and you can choose from many plans. However, there are drawbacks such as the need for a SIM-free smartphone and the hassle of setting up. A Wi-Fi router only needs to be set up after arrival and can be shared among multiple people or connected to multiple devices. However, there may be issues with battery life, the hassle of handing over, and increased costs. An eSIM does not require a physical SIM card, so there is no worry about loss or damage. The setup is relatively easy, but only a limited number of smartphones support it.

👇Choose the most suitable Internet option for you👇

Difference between eSIM and SIM card

eSIMs and traditional SIM cards serve as key components for international smartphone communication, despite their notable distinctions. Traditional SIM cards, which are tangible plastic inserts, fit into a specific slot within the smartphone for activation. Should you opt to switch network providers, this process necessitates the manual replacement of the SIM card.

Conversely, eSIM technology departs from the physical form, integrating directly into the smartphone's internal hardware from the outset. Carrier changes can be set on the device, so there is no need for physical exchange work.

Based on the features and disadvantages, it is important to choose the most suitable one according to the usage scene and purpose.

3 Benefits of Using Thailand eSIM

eSIM Thailand: 3 Benefits of Using Thailand eSIMs

1. It can be used immediately upon arrival in Thailand.

One of the major advantages of eSIM is that it allows you to use the internet smoothly from the moment you land at the airport in Thailand. With traditional SIM cards, you needed time to purchase one at an airport shop or to receive a pre-ordered SIM. However, by pre-downloading an eSIM , you can connect to the network the moment you step off the plane. This allows you to efficiently proceed with your travel arrangements, such as arranging a taxi or finding directions to your hotel.

2. No risk of loss or damage

Traditional SIM cards are very small and require careful handling, especially when replacing them during travel, which increases the risk of loss or damage. On the other hand, eSIMs do not have a physical shape, so there is no need to worry about loss or damage. There is also no need to worry about the hassle of opening the SIM tray with a small pin or accidentally dropping the SIM card.

3. Dual SIM

By using an eSIM , you can use dual SIM. Dual SIM allows you to use two networks on one smartphone. This allows you to install a SIM that can be used in both Japan and overseas on one device. You can smoothly switch network environments when moving from Japan to overseas and vice versa. With dual SIM, you don't have to re-contract your internet environment every time you visit multiple countries.

3 Disadvantages of Using Thailand eSIM

eSIM Thailand: 3 cons of Using Thailand eSIMs

1. Limited device compatibility

To use an eSIM, you need a smartphone or tablet that supports eSIM. While newer models are becoming eSIM compatible, older models and some mid-to-low priced devices cannot use eSIM. This means you will need to check whether your current device can use eSIM. If you need to purchase a new device to use eSIM, you should also consider the associated costs.

2. Cannot be used on multiple devices

Traditional SIM cards can be swapped between devices, allowing you to use one SIM on multiple devices. However, eSIMs are built into the device, making it difficult to easily move them between multiple devices. Therefore, those who use multiple devices during their trip to Thailand may find this inconvenient.

3. Cannot use a phone number

With eSIM data plans, a unique phone number may not be provided, or an additional fee may be required. This could be inconvenient in situations where a local phone number is needed, such as making restaurant reservations or contacting hotels. Traditional SIM cards often provide a phone number along with data, so this is something to consider when thinking about using an eSIM.

Trip.com's eSIM is an 8-day plan. For those staying for around a week, you can choose a cost-effective plan.

3. People who want to use the internet immediately

If you set up your smartphone in advance, you can use the internet immediately after arriving in Thailand. You can start comfortably without any waiting time.

Who is not suitable for Trip.com's Thailand eSIM ?

eSIM Thailand

1. People going on short or long trips to Thailand

For short or long-term stays, it may be better to consider plans optimized for specific periods offered by other providers.

2. People who want to use a large amount of internet

For those who consume a large amount of data, it is recommended to consider large-capacity plans offered by other providers. Some of the plans offered by Trip.com are not large-capacity, so caution is needed.

3. People who can set up an internet environment in Thailand

For those who have the flexibility to consider purchasing a local SIM card or renting a Wi-Fi router, Trip.com's eSIM may not necessarily be the best option.

3 Tips for Choosing an eSIM for Thailand

eSIM Thailand: 3 Tips for Choosing an eSIM in Thailand

1. Is the data volume sufficient?

Consider how much data you will need during your stay in Thailand. If you plan to search for tourist spot information in real time or upload photos and videos to social media, a large-capacity data plan is recommended. However, if basic communication and map usage are your main needs, a medium data plan should be sufficient.

2. Check the validity of the plan

Check the validity of the eSIM according to your stay in Thailand. A plan of about a week is recommended for short trips, and a one-month plan for long stays. To avoid running out of data during your stay in Thailand, it is good to choose a plan with a little leeway.

3. Are there good reviews?

Checking third-party reviews and feedback can help determine the quality and reliability of an eSIM. Reviews from users who have already used the eSIM are very useful for understanding actual usage and support in case of troubles.

Decent eSIM Plans for a Good Price.

No need to swap physical SIM cards with this new technological invention. This eSIM works just as well as a physical SIM card.

The esim was easy to install and to activate, and speed and coverage was good. I had a question about activating the personal hot spot and that got answered pretty quick via whatsapp.

Had great coverage and was easy to set up.

Make sure you carry out the step to activate via SMS on the number provided to you. Took me a day to figure this out, so user error. I didn’t read the instructions properly. Coverage was pretty good north to south in urban/semi-rural areas. Would use again!

The eSIM package i bought was perfect. I had unlimited data so using maps and communications made my 12 day stay so much easier.

The Best eSIM for Thailand Travel in 2024

Traveling to Thailand in 2024? An eSIM allows you to access data services without using a physical SIM card. eSIMs make staying connected while traveling extremely convenient. You can order an eSIM before your trip and activate it once you arrive in Thailand.

In this guide, we cover the top eSIMs available for travel in Thailand based on speed, reliability, affordability, and ease of use. Read on for full details on the three best eSIM options to consider for your trip.

Best eSIM for Thailand

How eSIMs Work

An eSIM is an embedded SIM card that allows you to connect to a cellular network without using a physical nano-SIM. eSIMs are directly integrated into your phone and can’t be removed. Many modern smartphone models contain an eSIM slot alongside the regular SIM card slot.

To use an eSIM, you first purchase a data plan through a provider. You’ll receive a QR activation code to scan with your phone’s camera. This installs your purchas ed data plan onto the eSIM. Once activated, you can manage your eSIM data plans directly from your phone’s settings.

A key advantage of eSIMs is convenience – you don’t need to obtain SIM cards when traveling internationally or swap physical SIMs in your device. This makes eSIMs perfect for travelers who want reliable connectivity abroad.

Below we cover the top three eSIM providers for travel in Thailand in 2024 based on plan flexibility, high-speed 5G data, and ease of activation.

Buy eSIM For Travel

1. Airalo – Best Overall Globally Available eSIM

Airalo is my top overall pick for travel eSIMs in Thailand thanks to their competitive pricing, high data caps, and ability to renew plans if needed.

  • Network : AIS (Thailand’s largest network)
  • Speeds : 5G / 4G LTE
  • Coverage : 98% coverage nationwide
  • Pricing : $10 USD and up
  • Plan Duration : 5 days to month-long (renewable)
  • Activation : Instant eSIM profile sent after payment

Airalo provides both short-term and month-long high-speed data plans (up to 5G speeds) on AIS, Thailand’s most reliable network. Their offerings range from flexible 5-day to month-long plans starting at $10 with high 15GB+ data caps unlikely to be exceeded by most travelers.

I appreciate that Airalo allows you to renew any data plan internationally from their website or app if you ever need more data during your trip. Support from Airalo is also excellent.

With 98% nationwide population coverage, you’re unlikely to face connectivity issues with an Airalo Thailand eSIM anywhere you travel within the country. Their eSIMs can be used for qualifying data plans in 190+ total countries.

For travel eSIM flexibility combined with 5G speeds on Thailand’s best network, Airalo is my top choice. Their app also makes account management straightforward during or after your travels.

2. Nomad – Most Affordable Multi-Country Option

Nomad ties together eSIM offerings from 25 different countries into a single account system. For Thailand, they resell tourist SIM packages from leading Thai provider AIS.

  • Network : AIS
  • Speeds : 4G LTE
  • Coverage : 99% population coverage nationwide
  • Pricing : From $3.99 USD (1GB plan)
  • Plan Duration : 7 days to 1 month
  • Activation : Scan QR code on app or site

Nomad offers very affordable 1GB to 50GB, Thailand-based data packages powered by AIS, starting at just $3.99 for 1GB over 7 days.

They provide plan options between $4 to $125 USD spanning durations from an entire week to a full month. Most travelers find the $19 10GB / 30-day plan to offer solid value. Their system lets you buy data packages for many countries then manage everything from one account.

While their Thailand coverage reaches 99% of the population via AIS, max data speeds top out at 4G LTE (no 5G access). But for saving money across multiple country trips I rate Nomad highly overall.

3. DTAC Happy Tourist – Best Local Thai SIM Provider

DTAC is Thailand’s second largest mobile operator. Unlike reseller eSIM brands, DTAC directly provides Thai tourist SIMs and eSIMs with included local calling.

  • Network : DTAC (direct)
  • Coverage : 98% population coverage
  • Pricing : ~$19 USD (15 day plan)
  • Plan Duration : 10 days / 15 days
  • Activation : Scan QR code or enter eSIM number

DTAC Happy Tourist SIMs offer visitors 5G-enabled data connectivity directly from this major Thai provider. Their 10-day (50GB data) and 15-day (unlimited data) plans running about $9 and $19 USD respectively make communication very affordable during stays.

Unlike many travel eSIMs focused solely on data, DTAC options provide 100 local voice call minutes or unlimited Thai calling alongside Thai phone numbers. This allows you to coordinate meetups or arrange transportation without needing a separate communication app or WiFi signal.

For accessing DTAC’s 5G network speeds plus built-in local calling abilities at a fair price point from an established Thai carrier, their Happy Tourist eSIM merits strong consideration for convenient connectivity in Thailand through 2024 and beyond.

  • 100 Mins of Local Calls
  • 5G Max Speed
  • Unlimited Data
  • Unlimited Local Calls

Key Factors When Comparing Thailand eSIMs

When selecting an eSIM for travel in Thailand, keep the following aspects in mind:

  • 5G Capability  – 5G networks now provide up to 10x faster speeds than 4G in many areas. Support for 5G connectivity should be a key consideration.
  • Network Coverage & Reliability  – Verify the underlying network has strong nationwide reach and a reputation for consistent uptime. Outages or patchy connectivity can quickly dampen your trip!
  • Data Amounts  – Do the high-speed data amounts align with your expected usage based on travel duration and connectivity needs? Sufficient data mitigates slow top-up procedures.
  • Pricing  – How does the eSIM rate on affordability relative to offered data amounts and contract duration? Finding the best value is important.
  • Ease of Activation  – Ensure the eSIM activation process matches your level of tech comfort. Scannable QR codes are generally simplest.

By comparing options across these key aspects, you can select a Thailand travel eSIM in 2024 matching your budget, usage needs, and ease-of-use preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which network should i choose for my thailand esim.

AIS and DTAC have the most extensive 5G and overall coverage nationally as Thailand’s two largest telcos. Lower-cost MVNO options like TrueMove H may carry more risk of softer network reach or performance inconsistencies in less populated areas.

How long do Thailand tourist eSIMs last?

Most tourist eSIM plan durations for Thailand are between 5 days to 30 days depending on selected data amounts. However many providers like Airalo allow you to renew monthly plans online if more time is needed.

Can I use mobile apps, social media, and streaming normally?

Yes, an eSIM provides you the same full smartphone functionality you’re used to at home over high-speed 4G / 5G data connectivity matching or exceeding local public WiFi capabilities.

Do travel eSIMs work for calling or SMS?

Some tourist eSIMs like DTAC’s include a set amount of Thailand calling minutes or unlimited calls to local numbers alongside data. But many eSIMs are data-only without native calling or messaging support – apps like WhatsApp can bridge this gap.

How much data will I need during my trip?

Assessing your data needs depends on trip duration and connectivity usage habits. For context, an hour of Web browsing or Google Maps eats ~100MB, social media uses ~50MB hourly, while video streaming requires 500MB+ per hour in HD. These estimates help estimate an appropriate starting data plan amount to avoid surprise overages.

Bottom Line

An eSIM provides maximum convenience for staying connected on travels through fast setup and avoiding physical SIM swaps. I recommend considering the eSIM benefits and drawbacks when deciding if choosing one makes sense for your 2024 Thailand travel plans and usage expectations during your trip or adventures around Southeast Asia.

Best eSIM for Thailand

To recap, the top three highest rated eSIM options in Thailand as of 2024 based on network performance, coverage, pricing, plan flexibility, and ease of activation advantages:

  • Airalo  – Best Overall Globally Available eSIM
  • Nomad  – Most Affordable Multi-Country Option
  • DTAC Happy Tourist  – Best Local Thai SIM Provider

Whichever Thailand eSIM option you select from the providers above, taking a few minutes to set up connectivity in advance is sure to alleviate hassle upon arrival and allow you to focus on enjoying your travels through this captivating country. Have an incredible trip!

Customer Reviews

The eSIM works well as expected in the 3 countries I visited recently: UK, Thailand, Taiwan. They send reminders when data is almost used up.

As I seen Airhub and I purchased the Thailand eSIM and it works good and there is no disturbance in the middle and the customer support is also very good and I will use the same product by going forward.

I opened the website of eSIMdb and I found Airhub and I buy an eSIM of Thailand Plan and it was awesome here the default is customer service is low rest and all fine.

The setup process for AirHub was straightforward, and I am pleased to report that it performed well during my recent two-week vacation in Thailand. Upon my arrival, I deactivated my primary data and effortlessly transitioned to the eSIM data, which worked flawlessly throughout my entire trip. I encountered no problems with the service, and I am already making plans to use AirHub again for any future excursions on my itinerary.

I paid for an eSIM but Yoho Mobile never sent anything. The order confirmation said the eSIM would arrive by email after 6 hours but no emails ever came (they have a correct email address because that is where I received the order confirmation).

5 Best SIM Cards for Thailand in 2024

Home | Travel | Asia | 5 Best SIM Cards for Thailand in 2024

If you want to buy a SIM card for Thailand , you should know that there are several options to choose from. I know that planning a trip can be overwhelming, so in this guide, I’m sharing the best Thailand SIM cards to help you out.

Having access to the Internet while traveling is super useful, as you can look up directions, nearby attractions, reviews, and more. For our trips, we always purchase an Holafly eSIM so we can update our Capture the Atlas social networks and keep up with the blog.

Plus, this eSIM for Thailand is completely digital, so it takes just a few minutes to install and activate. It also offers unlimited data, so we can focus on more important things like enjoying our trip. If, after reading this article, you decide this Thailand eSIM card is perfect for you, don’t forget to take advantage of this Holafly discount and save some money.

5% OFF your international eSIM card

Of course, there are other good travel SIMs for Thailand , so if your device isn’t compatible with a digital card or you want more options, keep reading. I’ve included the best local SIMs in Thailand as well as the physical card from SimOptions , which you can purchase before your trip.

How do SIM cards for Thailand work?

A SIM card for Thailand works the same way as any other SIM in your home country. If you get a physical card, you’ll be able to browse the Web and, in some cases, send texts and make calls to local phones in Thailand, depending on the plan.

Krabi Thailand, best sim cards for thailand

With a digital SIM like the Holafly eSIM , you’ll only have data, but I think this is more than enough for your trip. You’ll still be able to make calls by using mobile apps like Skype and WhatsApp, and you’ll be able to keep your home phone number. Just be aware that not all devices are compatible with virtual SIMs, so check your phone’s compatibility here before purchasing.

Installing a prepaid SIM card for Thailand is easy and will allow you to access the Internet in Thailand in just a few minutes. If you have the Holafly international eSIM , you just need to scan the QR code that gets emailed to you after purchasing. For physical cards, you must insert the card into your phone’s SIM card slot and activate it via SMS or call, depending on the company. If your phone doesn’t have a dual card slot, keep your original SIM card in a safe place so it doesn’t get lost while you’re traveling.

Thailand SIM card price comparison

To give you a better idea of the price for a Thailand SIM card , here is a comparison chart with the prices, plan durations, and gigabytes for the 5 best SIM cards in Thailand . I’ve included the Holafly eSIM and other physical cards such as the SimOptions SIM card and other local SIMs in Thailand .

As you can see, the only two options that offer Thailand SIM cards with unlimited data are the Holafly eSIM and the local SIM, TrueMove , and only for some plans. Keep in mind that you can’t order the TrueMove card until you arrive in Thailand, so it’s not my first recommendation, especially for short trips. Also, if your phone doesn’t have a dual card slot, you’ll have to remove your usual SIM card to install the Thai one.

If you’d rather have everything ready to go before leaving for your trip, and your phone isn’t compatible with digital SIM cards , consider getting the SimOptions card . This way, you can access the Internet as soon as you land in Thailand.

If you’re on a tight budget, the cheapest local SIM cards for Thailand are AIS, DTAC, and TrueMove, but you can’t purchase them until you’re in Thailand. For convenience and guaranteed high-speed data, I recommend the Holafly eSIM . You can buy it and install it before your trip and enjoy unlimited data without removing your phone’s original SIM.

Best SIM cards for Thailand

Now that you’ve compared the costs for a Thailand SIM card , I’ll share the pros and cons of each option.

I rely on the Internet for work, so I need a company that can guarantee high-speed data and a stable connection worldwide. That’s why I always get the Holafly eSIM . While it may be more expensive than the local cards, it’s super easy to install, and I can activate it from home. For me, it’s worth the extra cost not to have to worry about shopping around for the best deal on Thai phone cards when I could be enjoying my trip.

Plus, Holafly offers customer support in English, while most local Thailand SIM cards only have assistance in Thai. Still, if you want to purchase one of these cards, you can read about the best options below.

1. Holafly eSIM , the best SIM card for Thailand

First, the Holafly eSIM is the best eSIM for Thailand , thanks to its convenience and simplicity. It’s 100% digital, so it’s ideal for those who don’t have a dual card slot on their phone, or who want to set up their SIM before their trip.

To activate the Holafly card, simply open the email that gets sent to you after purchasing the eSIM. It’ll have a QR code, which you need to scan to start using mobile data.

Holafly eSIM, thailand sim card prepaid

While this is a super streamlined process, you should be aware that not all devices are compatible with this type of travel eSIM for Thailand . I always recommend checking your phone’s compatibility through this link before purchasing, although if you have one of the latest smartphone models, you should be fine.

Also, if you run into any problems, Holafly’s assistance team is available 24 hours a day in English, so you’ll always have someone to help you.

We used the Holafly eSIM for Thailand for one of our trips to Asia, and we ended up having a better Internet connection than our friends who bought a local SIM card for Thailand (I believe it was TrueMove). That said, what I value most about Holafly is that they offer unlimited data, so we’re always able to connect and stay on top of our work.

If you want this eSIM for travel to Thailand , I suggest taking advantage of the Holafly discount codes that can save you money.

2. SimOptions card , the best physical SIM card for Thailand

If you want to get everything ready from home, but your phone is not compatible with eSIM cards, then SimOptions is a great alternative.

Just remember that you must order your international SIM in advance since these physical SIM cards for Thailand take up to 3 business days to arrive at your home. Once you receive your card, just put it into your device to start using the data. And if you have any questions, SimOptions has a support team that is available 24 hours a day to help you out.

SimOptions, sim cards for thailand

Of course, if your phone doesn’t have a dual SIM slot, you’ll have to remove your usual SIM card and keep it in a safe place while you use the Thai one. Another thing to keep in mind is that SimOptions only offers 14-day plans with 10 GB of data. To compare, the Holafly eSIM and most local SIM cards for Thailand have plans with more data at cheaper prices.

3. AIS , another good SIM card for Thailand

If you decide that you want a local SIM card in Thailand , then consider getting one from AIS . This is one of the most popular companies, offering 14-day and 30-day plans with a good amount of mobile data.

The biggest disadvantage of these cards is that you’ll have to wait until you’re in Thailand to get one. This means you’ll have to spend time buying a SIM card in the Thailand airport or at one of the local stores. This can eat up a lot of your vacation time, so it’s not ideal for shorter trips.

AIS SIM card, thailand cell phone plans

On the other hand, these local cards have an exclusive Wi-Fi network for customers, so you’ll always have Internet at important sites and tourist attractions. Just log into the network with your personal password, and you won’t have to consume your plan’s data.

To activate this card, you must call the AIS phone line and follow the activation instructions. I recommend doing this at the store you get it from since the instructions are usually in Thai.

4. DTAC , a Thailand SIM card for short trips

DTAC is another option is you want a prepaid Thailand SIM card from a local company. They offer shorter-term plans, so if you’re only going to be in the country for a few days, it’s a good option. That said, the prices are about the same as the other local companies.

DTAC SIM card, thailand sim cards for tourists

You can buy a DTAC card from any official store or at one of their airport kiosks. It’s easier to find retailers in bigger cities like Bangkok, so if you’re going to a smaller town, you might have some trouble. On the plus side, this company has a customer service hotline that you can call for support in English, so if you run into any technical problems, you should be able to solve them quite easily.

5. TrueMove , a cheap prepaid SIM card for Thailand

Finally, the prepaid SIM card for Thailand from TrueMove is another popular option. Of all the local cards, this is my favorite since it offers a wide range of plans at affordable prices, and some of them include unlimited data.

TrueMove, best sim card for thailand

Like AIS, TrueMove offers unlimited Wi-Fi, so you can consume a good amount of data during your trip. One of the downsides of TrueMove is that you must buy the SIM card in Thailand at one of the authorized stores. They’re also available in some subway stations, but it’ll still take you some time to find a store, make the purchase, and complete the activation process.

Where to buy a SIM card for Thailand

As you’ve seen, you can buy a Thailand SIM card online in your home country, or you can wait until you arrive at your destination. I prefer having everything ready to go before my trip, so if that sounds like you, I recommend getting the Holafly eSIM or a card from SimOptions.

Below, I’ll tell you how to buy your SIM card for Thailand , whether you’re doing it before your trip or after your arrival in Thailand.

Buy a Thailand SIM card in your home country

If you haven’t left for your trip yet, you can purchase the SIM online. With the Holafly digital SIM , you’ll receive an email as soon as you make the purchase, and if you buy from SimOptions , you’ll get the card delivered to your home within 3 business days.

Wiang Kum Kam, international sim card for thailand

For me, this is the best option since I can install the card in advance, and if I have any problems activating it, I can sort them out before my trip. This gives me greater peace of mind when I arrive at the airport since I don’t need to worry about locating a store, installing a local Thailand SIM card , and navigating the language barrier.

Another great thing about buying a Thailand SIM card in advance is that I can start using my data immediately. This is useful if I need to call a taxi or Uber, or I need to access online maps.

Buy a SIM card for Thailand at your destination

If you’re already traveling and still need a SIM card for Thailand , you can still buy the Holafly eSIM . It’s totally digital, so once you purchase it, you’ll get an email with a QR code that you can scan to connect to the Internet.

The alternative is to buy a travel SIM in Thailand from one of the local companies. Make sure you go to an official store or authorized retailer, especially since there are lots of unauthorized stores and kiosks that may offer SIM cards with less data than advertised.

Whichever option you choose, remember to always check your phone’s compatibility in advance. In the case of Holafly, you can go through this link to see if you’re device will work with an eSIM for Thailand. For all other cards, you must check with the store.

How to activate a SIM card for Thailand

The process of activating a Thailand SIM card depends on which type of card you get. For example, with the Holafly eSIM , you just have to scan the QR code in your email to download the configuration. This will automatically activate the eSIM on your phone.

Bangkok market, best esim for thailand

For physical cards, insert the SIM into your device, then proceed with the activation process via SMS or call. If you’re getting a local prepaid SIM card in Thailand , I recommend asking the salesperson to help you activate it since the instructions are usually in Thai.

Also, consider whether or not your device has a dual SIM slot. If so, you can keep your usual SIM card installed, but if not, you’ll have to remove it so you can insert the Thailand SIM card . Keep your usual SIM card in a safe place so it doesn’t get lost or damaged during your trip.

Thailand SIM card compatibility and requirements

To use the Holafly eSIM, you must have a compatible device, which you can check here . Also, your phone must be unlocked and compatible with Thailand’s network frequency. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use any of the Thai SIM cards in this article.

If you’re buying your SIM card in Thailand upon arriving in the country, you’ll need to present your passport to the salesperson. Then, choose the data plan that best suits your needs and insert the SIM into your device. You’ll have to finish the activation with the specific telephone company for that card, so I recommend completing this process at the store.

Thailand SIM card vs. SIM card for Asia

Finally, if you plan on visiting more than one country in Asia like I did during my 20-day Southeast Asia trip , you may want to take a look at Holafly’s eSIMs for Asia . They work in over a dozen countries, including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines.

Streets of Bangkok, best sim card in thailand for tourist

With the eSIM for Asia, you won’t have to purchase a new SIM card in every country you visit. Not only can this save you money, but it’ll ensure you stay connected throughout your trip. You can choose between 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 30-day plans with unlimited data. You’ll have to decide what works best for you: a card you can use in every country you visit, or individual SIM cards you’ll have to buy at each place you travel to.

There is also the SimOptions card for Asia , which is a good option for those who prefer a physical card. So, go over your options and see which alternative is most useful for your trip.

That’s everything to know about Thai SIM cards , so now you can get Internet in Thailand during your trip. I hope this guide helped you narrow down your options and feel better prepared for your travels, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to leave me a comment below. I’d also love to hear about your experience using any of these Thailand SIM cards for tourists .

Until then, stay safe and enjoy your trip!

The Best Thailand SIM Cards

04/26/2024 by Kristin Addis Leave a Comment

So, you’re gearing up for an adventure in Thailand? Awesome choice! Whether you’re prepping for an island-hopping extravaganza or a cultural immersion in Bangkok, one thing’s for sure: staying connected is key. And trust me, you don’t want to be caught in a Wi-Fi dead zone when you’re trying to get Skytrain directions or summoning a Grab taxi.

Now, let’s talk SIM cards. Specifically, the best ones for your Thai escapade.

Table of Contents

Touchdown in Thailand: Airport SIM Card Pickup

thailand temple

This is the way I always did it before (the iPhone 14, that is). I stepped off the plane, the warm breeze hit me, and I’m itching to explore. But wait, before diving into the adventure, I always grabbed local SIM card right at the airport.

Thailand’s major airports, like Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok , Chiang Mai International Airport, or Phuket International Airport, are equipped with kiosks and stores offering SIM cards from various providers. It’s quick, convenient, and ensures you’re connected from the get-go. No need to fuss about finding a store in the city amidst the hustle and bustle.

I have always found this pretty simple, with it being the best way to get a card in just about every airport other than Bali , where SIM cards are a total ripoff. But in Thailand , local companies like DTAC and AIS tend to have the best coverage, and many will have kiosks right in the airport.

This will only work if your phone can take a physical SIM card. Many newer phones like the iPhone 14 and up, don’t even have a slot. If your phone can take both, there may still be some benefits to getting an eSIM – particularly the regional ones.

Why eSIMs Are KEY

If your phone supports it (like anyone with an iPhone 14 or later), consider yourself lucky because eSIMs are so nice and convenient, especially for globetrotters like us. It’s one of my best travel tips .

International eSIMs work instantly. The moment you touch down in Thailand, your eSIM kicks into action, keeping you connected without skipping a beat.

On our most recent trip to Thailand , I bought a 30-day 3GB Asia plan for $13 that gave me coverage in 18 countries, including Singapore, which was also on our itinerary. I would have had to spend more than that to get the same coverage in each country, respectively. This is great for those backpacking around Southeast Asia who will he hitting multiple countries.

best tourist esim thailand

Make sure the local companies they contract with are actually good, with decent coverage. It’s as easy as quickly Googling the name of the company and you’ll see message boards where people can confirm if they’re good or not. In the case of the eSIM I used and recommend , SINGTEL and AIS are as good as it gets, and I had full coverage the whole time.

best thailand sim cards

I’ve used eSIMs in 15 countries all around the world now and am here to tell you – they work. It’s also highly competitive amongst eSIM companies, so I find they’re constantly improving in terms of pricing and plans.

How to Use an eSIM in Thailand

First, you buy the SIM card, then while you still have Wifi (I do this at home), you can activate it by scanning a QR code that will be sent to your email once you purchase. Within a minute or two, your phone will process and install the eSIM and once you’re ready, you can activate it.

Some SIMs won’t begin working until you touch down and some might right when you activate them, so read the details on yours before choosing the timing. Make sure you select ‘primary’ (which is your home SIM) for iMessage and calls and the eSIM for data. Turn on roaming for the travel eSIM only once you touch down.

If you’re only visiting Thailand, consider getting the SIM that best matches your needs by browsing Thailand only plans, which start at $4.50.

Why We’re Not Roaming (T-Mobile Users, Listen Up)

thailand honeymoon

Roaming will almost never be the right choice, especially if you can just easily purchase an eSim instead. For me with Verizon, that’s $10 per DAY I’d have to pay just to use my plan data from home. Now, if you’re one of the savvy folks with a T-Mobile plan back home, you might be thinking, “But wait, doesn’t T-Mobile offer international data?”

Sure, they do. But here’s the thing: it’s limited in terms of speed. And let’s face it, navigating the streets of Bangkok or uploading Instagram stories requires more than just a trickle of data. Plus, T-Mobile’s international data speeds might not always cut it, especially if you’re relying on internet calls or ordering Grab taxis.

That’s where a local SIM card or travel eSIM swoops in to save the day.

When it comes to staying connected in Thailand, it’s all about convenience, affordability, and reliability. Whether you opt for a traditional SIM card at the airport or dive into the world of eSIMs, the goal remains the same: keeping you connected to the moments that matter most.
