2022 DP World Tour Rankings format: How it works, field sizes, tournaments

bmw championship standings dp world tour

The Race to Dubai playoffs format has changed several times since the concept was introduced, and the name change to the DP World Tour Rankings for the 2021-2022 season.

Explaining the DP World Tour Rankings format means detailing how players earn DP World Tour points, qualify for the final events to the DP World Tour Championship and then battle it out to see who wins the $2 million first-place prize.

bmw championship standings dp world tour

2022 DP World Tour playoff format

How to qualify.

As has been the case since the start of the DP World Tour Rankings (Race to Dubai), the entire DP World Tour regular season leads to the conclusion, with each official event offering points to players who made the 36-hole cut based on a standardized system related to the purse as quoted in US dollars. For each regular European Tour event, the winner earns a certain number Race to Dubai points. The four majors, World Golf Championships and the BMW Championship offer more points. The final two events offer elevated points, with the season-ending DP World Tour Championship offering 2,000 points to the winner of the event.

All of the points from regular season events are tallied together at the conclusion of the regular season, which this year came with the completion of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The top 50 players in the Race to Dubai standings at the end of those tournaments qualify for the Race to Dubai finale in the DP World Tour Championship. The top 110 players in points typically retain their status for the next season.

The top 50 available players qualify for the DP World Tour Championship.

The top five finishers in the Race to Dubai standings after the DP World Tour Championship claim a share of the bonus pool.

DP World Tour playoff events and cuts

In the final events of the season, the Nedbank Golf Challenge and DP World Tour Championship, points are increased. Points earned in these final events are added to a player's regular season tally. The player with the most points at the end of the DP World Tour Championship tops the DP World Tour rankings and wins the $2 million winner's share of the bonus pool .

DP World Tour Championship format

Starting in 2019, the DP World Tour Championship format is a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament with no handicaps or cut. The player who wins the event earns 2,000 Race to Dubai points, and each player completing the event earns points. At the conclusion, the points leader wins the season-long race.

However, there remains great incentive to win the season-ending tournament. The tournament features a $10 million purse, with $3 million to the winner.

Win both the season finale and the season-long race, and a player claims a huge payday.

G4D Tour Series Finale @ DP World Tour Championship - Player profiles

The inaugural G4D (Golf for the Disabled) Tour season reaches an exciting climax this week as Jumeirah Golf Estates plays host to the G4D Tour Series Finale @ DP World Tour Championship .

Kipp Popert-1432535299 (2)

World Number One Kipp Popert is joined by fellow winners from this season Mike Browne and Tommaso Perrino in an eight-strong field - featuring the top eight players in the World Rankings for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD) - set to compete on the Earth Course from Friday November 18 - Saturday November 19.

Ireland’s Brendan Lawlor, the second ranked player in the world, Spaniard Juan Postigo Arce, American Chris Biggins, Canadian Kurtis Barkley and Sweden’s Rasmus Lia complete the line-up.

The event, which runs alongside the DP World Tour’s final Rolex Series tournament of 2022 - the DP World Tour Championship - will continue to showcase the inclusive nature of golf while encouraging others to take up the sport.

So far this season, Popert has claimed four victories from the opening six events across five countries and made history with the first hole in one on the Tour in the most recent edition at Real Club Valderrama.

Popert kicked off the campaign in style, winning the opening two events, the G4D Tour @ Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett and the G4D Tour @ Porsche European Open.

He then made it a hat-trick of victories at the G4D @ BMW PGA Championship before he claimed a fourth G4D Tour title in dominant fashion last time out, winning by five shots in Spain.

Fellow Englishman Browne broke Popert’s early-season dominance with a win at the G4D Tour @ Horizon Irish Open before Italian Perrino claimed a commanding five-shot victory at the G4D Tour @ ISPS Handa World Invitational Presented by Aviv Clinics in Northern Ireland.

Here, we take a closer look at the field vying to win this week in Dubai.

Kipp Popert

Nationality: English

Disability: Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Kipp Popert-1414039874

Having been born ten weeks premature, Popert was later diagnosed with a form of CP called spastic diplegia that affects his lower body, and he underwent complex surgeries to restructure his right foot in 2016 and then his left foot in 2018.

A final round bogey-free six-under-par 66 at Fairmont St Andrews saw Popert win the EDGA Hero Open last August and replace Lawlor at the top of the World Rankings, before he finished tied third behind the Irishman in the 2021 EDGA season finale in Dubai.

Popert, who has a degree in Business Management and Golf from the University of Birmingham, was the World Number One when the DP World Tour announced the launch of the G4D Tour in February and regained that status from Lawlor after his impressive recent triumph at Valderrama.

The DP World Tour spent time earlier this year with Popert and his family, telling the inspirational story of how he is looking to break barriers and achieve his dreams in an episode of Roots. You can watch the episode below.

Mike Browne

Disability: Above knee amputee

Mike Browne-1405681814

World Number Six Browne suffered a broken left leg during a routine training exercise serving for the Royal Artillery unit in 2011, but the injury had not healed almost two years later due to a rare infection which led him to undergo amputation two years later.

Since taking up golf as an Army amputee, he has turned professional and now sits sixth in the WR4GD with a first G4D Tour victory to his name after he cruised to a four-shot win at Mount Juliet Estate in June.

Last season, he finished fourth at both the EDGA Cazoo Open and ISPS HANDA World Disability Invitational to secure his place at the Dubai Finale, played over 36 holes at the Earth Course.

Tommaso Perrino

Nationality: Italian

Disability: Orthopaedic

Perrino -1413812576

The Italian suffered a scooter accident, limiting the functionality of one leg, when he was 17 in 2001 but has since gone on to become one of EDGA’s leading players, currently ranked fifth in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability.

Perrino, who was the Italian champion aged 16, is a head coach at the Cosmopolitan Golf & Country Club in Tuscany, the club where he grew up playing the sport.

He has played at the 2020 and 2021 Italian Open and the World Number Five won this season's G4D Tour event in Northern Ireland.

Brendan Lawlor

Nationality: Irish

Disability: Short stature

Brendan Lawlor-1414039950

Lawlor was born with rare bone disorder Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, characterised by a shorter stature and shorter limbs.

Since playing in his first EDGA event at the end of 2017, Lawlor has claimed a host of titles, including back-to-back victories at the EDGA Cazoo Open and ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Brendan Lawlor in August last year to become World Number One in the WR4GD before he ended 2021 with a four-stroke victory at the EDGA Dubai Finale.

The Irishman, who turned professional in 2019 and made his full DP World Tour debut in the UK Championship at The Belfry in August 2020, lost in a play-off to Popert at the G4D Tour @ Porsche European Open, one of three second-place finishes this season.

Juan Postigo

Nationality: Spanish

Disability: Right leg dysmelia

Juan Postigo-1413819789

Postigo was born without much of his right leg and no knee, but since starting to play golf aged 12 has gone on to become World Number Three in the WR4GD.

He defended his individual men’s European Championship for Golfers with Disability title in 2021, after the biennial event was cancelled in 2020.

Born in the same part of Northern Spain as Seve Ballesteros, Postigo claimed the top prizes in both the Gross and Nett divisions as the European Disabled Golf Association kicked off its 2022 campaign with the Vilamoura Open in February and will be eager to finish the season with a title after a second and two third-placed finishes on the G4D Tour this year.

Chris Biggins

Nationality: American

Chris Biggins-1395171526

Biggins maiden victory at the EDGA Cazoo Classic in August last year was enough to book his place in the season-ending finale in Dubai.

Victory saw him become the first American to win an EDGA DP World Tour title as he carded a level par 72 on the final day - the best round of the tournament.

Biggins, who won the US Disabled Open Golf Championship in 2019, works as director of player development at The Country Club of Birmingham in Alabama and his best performance on the G4D Tour so far this season is finishing runner-up last time out at Valderrama.

Kurtis Barkley

Nationality: Canadian

Disability: Scoliosis

Kurtis Barkley-1405644644

Barkley, born with a curvature of the spine, was one of eight golfers with a disability who qualified to play in two EDGA tournaments, on the same courses and on the same days as DP World Tour events in 2021.

Across his participation in the EDGA Hero Open and then at the EDGA Cazoo Classic at London Golf Club the week after, he finished third to qualify for the Dubai Finale last year. The Canadian lost in a three-man play-off at the start of the 2022 G4D Tour season at The Belfry.

During his 2019 season on the EDGA tour, he had five top-three results in six tournaments, including winning the Ontario Disabilities Championship, and finishing third at the U.S. Disabled Open, the Canadian Amputee and Disabled National Open and the United States Adaptive Golf Alliance International Para-Golf Competition in Las Vegas.

Nationality: Swedish

Disability: Leg impairment

Rasmus Lia

A promising junior cross-country skier, Lia fell 27 metres on the slopes when he was 12 and suffered back, hip, pelvis and leg injuries. Realising his cross-country days were over, he took up golf at the course where his father worked.

Back in April he finished in a narrow second place in the EDGA Pas de Calais Paragolf Open in France, followed by a third place in the Italian Open for Disabled in May, before helping his national team Sweden to finish second in the European Team Championship in June.

Now at eighth in the WR4GD, he is making his fourth G4D Tour appearance of the season.

Kipp Popert five shots clear after ace at Valderrama

Kipp Popert five shots clear after ace at Valderrama

Kipp Popert is on track to claim his fourth G4D Tour title of the season after a hole-in-one helped him build a five-shot lead at the midway point of the G4D Tour @ Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Golf, Olympics, Xander Schauffele

For only the third time within the last century, the Summer Olympics will feature a 72-hole stroke play for some of the best men’s and women’s players in the world.

Xander Schauffele won the Gold Medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, contested in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rory Sabbatini won the Silver, while Taipei’s C.T. Pan came in third, winning the Bronze. In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Englishman Justin Rose won the Gold, Henrik Stenson took home the Silver, and Matt Kuchar won the Bronze.

This year’s Olympic Golf Competition will take place at Le Golf National, outside of Paris, where the Europeans trounced the Americans in the 2018 Ryder Cup .

The men’s tournament will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 1, exactly 100 days from this writing. As such, we want to highlight the qualification process, provide updated standings, and other essential tidbits related to Olympic Golf.

Olympic Golf Qualification

Only 60 players will tee it up in both the men’s and women’s Olympic Golf Competition, creating an aura not dissimilar to the Signature Events seen on the PGA Tour . Of those 60 players, 59 gain entry via the Olympic Golf Rankings, which relies on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) .

Each tournament has a strength of field rating for the Olympic Golf Rankings based on the quality of players within the field, like the OWGR. That determines the number of points awarded at an event, which are then allocated to the players based on where they finish. Better performances in stronger events lead to more points.

The host country always includes one player in the field, too, so this year, Matthieu Pavon will presumably represent France under that distinction.

A country can have as many as four players compete in the Olympics, as long as each of those four players falls within the top 15 of the Olympic Golf Rankings. Currently, this stipulation only applies to the United States.

Outside of the top 15, only two players per country can compete.

The International Golf Federation will finalize the field for the 2024 men’s Olympic Golf Competition on Monday, Jun. 17, the day after the U.S. Open concludes at Pinehurst No. 2.

Current Olympic Golf Ranking Standings

Official world golf ranking (owgr) listed in parentheses:, 1. scottie scheffler — usa (1), 2. rory mcilroy — ireland (2), 3. xander schauffele — usa (3), 4. jon rahm — spain (4), 5. wyndham clark — usa (5), 6. viktor hovland — norway (6), 7. ludvig åberg — sweden (7), 8. patrick cantlay — usa (8), 9. tommy fleetwood — great britain (11), 10. matt fitzpatrick — great britain (12), 11. hideki matsuyama — japan (15), 12. jason day — australia (21), 13. matthieu pavon — france (22), 14. tom kim — south korea (23), 15. nick taylor — canada (27).

For the United States, Max Homa (9), Brian Harman (10), Collin Morikawa (13), Cameron Young (14), and Sahith Theegala (15) can potentially slide past Patrick Cantlay (8) and grab the fourth and final spot among the Americans. The competition among these players will remain fierce through the major championship season.

Masters Tournament

Beyond the top 15, only two players per country can compete.

16. Sepp Straka — Austria (28)

17. min woo lee — australia (32), 18. nicolai højgaard — denmark (34), 19. shane lowry — ireland (37), 20. byeong hun an — south korea (38), 21. emiliano grillo — argentina (41), 22. stephan jaeger — germany (43), 23. adam hadwin — canada (49), 24. ryan fox — new zealand (56), 25. christiaan bezuidenhout — south africa (58), 26. adrian meronk — poland (62), 27. erik van rooyen — south africa (64), 28. alex noren — sweden (67), 29. thomas detry — belgium (68), 30. thorbjørn olesen — denmark (72), 31. keita nakajima — japan (75), 32. joaquin niemann — chile (82).

The Masters

33. Sami Valimaki — Finland (86)

34. victor perez — france (93), 35. alejandro tosti — argentina (98), 36. david puig — spain (108), 37. kevin yu — taipei (112), 38. yannik paul — germany (123), 39. carl yuan — china (131), 40. c.t. pan — taipei (132), 41. joost luiten — netherlands (135), 42. camilo villegas — colombia (150), 43. daniel hillier — new zealand (170), 44. matteo manassero — italy (173), 45. mito pereira — chile (181), 46. shubhankar sharma — india (190), 47. adrien dumont de chassart — belgium (196), 48. gavin green — malaysia (203), 49. darius van driel — netherlands (215), 50. carlos ortiz — mexico (216).

LIV Golf

51. Abraham Ancer — Mexico (219)

52. gagenjeet bhullar — india (230), 53. kiradech aphibarnrat — thailand (254), 54. guido migliozzi — italy (255), 55. phachara khongwatmai — thailand (268), 56. fabrizio zanotti — paraguay (274), 57. rafael campos — paraguay (289), 58. zecheng dou — china (304), 59. nico echavarria — colombia (211), 60. kalle samooja — finland (355).

Like the United States, a few other countries will have quite the competition on their hands:

Since Cameron Smith joined LIV Golf after the 2022 Tour Championship, his OWGR ranking has plummeted. He is 52nd in the OWGR, 20 spots below Min Woo Lee. But Smith has won a major championship before and certainly has the talent to win another at Valhalla and Pinehurst No. 2. Should he go on to do so—or at the very least contend—he may have to start preparing for Paris.

Plenty of national pride exists among the Canadian contingency this year, especially since Royal Montreal will host the Presidents Cup in September. But before that, Canada will send two players to the Olympics. Adam Hadwin (49) currently holds a slim lead over Corey Conners (50) in the OWGR, but Mackzenie Hughes (66) and Adam Svensson lurk not too far behind.

Hero Dubai Desert Classic

At this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans , the young, dynamic duo of Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard will try and conquer the PGA Tour’s only team event. But we are not far away from seeing this set of twins tee it up in Paris. Rasmus (83) sits 11 spots behind Thorbjørrn Olesen, but a hot stretch for Højgaard—or a win in Louisiana—could change Olesen’s Olympic prospects.

Yannik Paul has had a solid few years on the DP World Tour and sits two spots above Matti Schmid (125) in the OWGR. Thanks to his win at the Texas Children’s Houston Open , Stephan Jaeger has all but secured one of Germany’s two spots, but the other one will come down to either Paul or Schmid. It’s a toss-up.

With his victory at the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa in March, Matteo Manassero (173) has all but locked up one spot for the Italian contingency. However, the other spot, like the case with Germany, is up for grabs between Guido Migliozzi (255) and Francesco Molinari (263), the latter having won the 2018 Open Championship.

Jon Rahm will represent Spain in Paris, but the other spot remains a mystery. David Puig (108) currently possesses the second spot, but Pablo Larrazabal (119), Jorge Campillo (121), and Adrian Otaegui (140) are not too far behind. Puig plays on LIV Golf, while the other three compete on the DP World Tour, where more opportunities to earn OWGR points present themselves. As such, it would surprise nobody if one of these three Spaniards jumped over Puig down the stretch.

South Korea

Byeong Hun An, who recently tied for 16th at The Masters , sits seven spots above Sungjae Im (45) in the OWGR. Si Woo Kim (48) is right there, too, so the South Koreans have quite the battle on their hands down the stretch. Should Im or Kim play well in the majors, or at the Wells Fargo Championship or the Memorial—the final two Signature Events before the Olympic Golf deadline—they could surpass An in the standings and join Tom Kim in representing South Korea in Paris.

Projected FedExCup standings after opening round of Zurich Classic

Change Text Size

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA TOUR's only two-man team event, uses an alternating-round Four-ball and Foursomes format. The first and third rounds are played as Four-ball (best ball), and the second and final rounds are played as Foursomes (alternate shot).

Four teams share the lead (11-under 61) after Thursday's opening round at TPC Louisiana: Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry, Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire and Aaron Rai/David Lipsky.

Each player on the winning team will receive 400 FedExCup points, with each player on the runner-up team receiving 162.5 points. After the second round, the top 33 teams and ties will make the cut; all teams that make the cut will receive FedExCup points.

Here's a look at the projected FedExCup standings after the opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
