Leeds Beer Tours

Leeds Beer Tours

Award-winning three-hour walking tour exploring Leeds’ rich beer heritage. As well as learning about beer, brewing and pubs in an era of forgotten Leeds, you will also get to see some of Leeds’ iconic heritage sites. Visit five pubs, with beers included in the fee!

The tour begins at The Tetley, which was the Headquarters for Leeds’ most famous brewery, Joshua Tetley and Sons. Here, learn about the history of the brewery & look around the site.

The second stop is The Adelphi, Tetley Brewery’s flagship pub built in the late Victorian period. Here, you learn about the history of the pub, other old breweries in the city & how it compares to the modern brewing scene.

From the Adelphi, the tour walks to the Duck & Drake via other sites of historical interest. These include the location where the first ever moving picture was recorded & Leeds Minster church. Find out why the railway embankment is covered in gravestones!

The Duck & Drake is on Kirkgate, Leeds’ oldest street with a dark past. Learn about the history of the Duck & Drake, plus more about Kirkgate’s reputation.

Stop four is the Pack Horse on Briggate. Find out about the pub that claims to be the oldest in Leeds. Here you will also learn about the brewing process, as told through the eyes of a Leeds-based brewery in the mid-1900s.

Finally, the tour ends at Whitelocks Ale House, also on Briggate. This is arguably Leeds’ most iconic pub, with it’s internal decor dating to the 1890s. Explore the rich history of Whitelocks & the wider Briggate area.

A half of traditionally brewed beer (or equivalent drink for non-beer drinkers) is provided at each pub stop (five in total) & is included in the price of the tour.

What’s included? A half a pint of beer, or equivalent, is included at each stop of the tour.

Please note Unfortunately, not all venues have step-free access and one section of the tour does include walking up two flights of stairs.

The tour is for over-18s only. Many of the venues operate a Challenge 25 policy, which means if you’re fortunate to look younger than 25, please make sure you have ID with you.

The tour includes periods of walking between venues. The longest walk is approx. 15 minutes.

What do I need to bring? As a section of the tour involves outdoor walking, please check the weather and dress appropriately!

A public tour runs twice a month on a Saturday, 13:00-16:00. Tour frequency is increased during Summer months. Private tours are also welcome and these can be booked for any day and time, subject to venue and tour guide availability.

Kirkstall brewery makes beer history this month.

Kirkstall Brewery is reopening Leeds’ iconic Tetley building from 26 April, bringing the landmark back into Yorkshire beer culture.

brewery tours near leeds

The move to revive The Tetley, which db outlined back in March , follows Kirkstall assisting North Brew Co in escaping administrators as well as fend of a potential takeover offer from private equity firm Keystone, formerly known as Breal Group which has already absorbed Yorkshire’s Black Sheep Brewery , London’s Brew By Numbers and Brick Brewery as well as Birmingham’s Purity .

As part of the reopening, the bar will be serving not only Kirkstall’s own beers, but also those from other local modern and traditional craft and cask brewers, including Tetley.

Northern brews

Speaking about the opening, Kirkstall Brewery owner and founder Steve Holt, said: “We’re thrilled to have not only Kirkstall, Leeds Brewery and North beers available but also beers from other Leeds based breweries including Northern Monk and Anthology and of course, Tetley’s Bitter.”

Simon Schofield, head of development north at Vastint UK, the developer behind Aire Park and owners of The Tetley building, admitted: “We hope this partnership with Kirkstall Brewery gives the people of Leeds a small taster of what’s to come in the very near future.”

Holt added: “It was always our ambition with this project to create a venue that offered fantastic food and celebrated the best of local brewing.”

Bar and restaurant

The Tetley will be open from 10am with the new bar and restaurant menu featuring quality classic pub food daily, as well as traditional roast dinners every Sunday.

The building was built in the Art Deco style in 1931, and by the 1980s Tetley’s Brewery had became the world’s biggest cask ale producer, making the site an icon of Leeds beer history, even after its closure in 2011.

From 2013 until 2023 the building, which is located within the Leeds’ district Aire Park, operated as an art gallery.
