Windsor Castle

We had a wonderful tour. All the accommodations were first class. The very first day we saw a mile long line at Windsor Castle, but our tickets were already taken care of and we went straight in with no waiting. That was the way it was at all sights on the trip. We visited the important sights and did not have to worry about booking, driving, parking, where to stay or where to eat.

CIE Tours Customer

Gareth was a helpful tour guide.

Highly Recommend this trip of a Lifetime

I loved how we were able to see so much in such a short period of time. Everything was made easy for us such as transportation to each place (as well as to and from the airport) and most of our meals (all breakfasts) were covered. I also love that it was affordable and everything was including in the price. I cannot pick a favorite place I loved it all. I wish I could have spent more time at each place but I understand it needed to be that way to fit everything in.

So much to see and do on the’Best of Britain’ tour!

Seeing so much of historical and modern Great Britain was enlightening. I can now put people and places in the country in perspective. Our guide was most helpful with this aspect. I felt the trip had great value for the money spent. Thank you!

Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the "Welcome Dinner." (Dinner)

DAY 3 - ENGLAND . . Stow-on-the-Wold - Stratford-Upon-Avon - Warwickshire.

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England. Gentle hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region. The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village's authentic stocks. Then it's on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting. The introductory tour includes a picture stop in front of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and entrance to the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Enjoy some free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history. Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - ENGLAND . . York - County Durham.

Drive north via the Nottingham area. Around lunch time, arrive in the historic city of York and spend the afternoon exploring the sights that interest you. Crossing the mouth of the River Severn, return to England for a tour of Bath: the elegant spa town where the Romans harnessed the natural hot springs 2,000 years ago.  An included visit to the Roman Baths Museum reveals the advanced engineering developed by the Romans.  Then, it is on to mysterious Stonehenge.  Dating back to about 1500 B.C., one can only speculate how the stones reached the site and how they were moved into place — some weighing 45 tons!  Upon arrival in London, check in and enjoy a relaxing “Farewell Dinner” at the hotel.  Tomorrow, the entire day will be devoted to sightseeing in the British capital.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

Today begins with a guided bus tour of London’s famous landmarks such as the Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square.  Following the city tour, you will have a few hours to pursue your personal interests.  If you have a specific destination in mind, the Tube system (Underground) is easy, fast and economical.  Your tour manager will also provide suggestions for some of the most popular attractions.  Spend lunch time amid the bustling shops and street performers of Covent Garden.  Or, study works of art by da Vinci, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Picasso at The National Gallery.  Located on the banks of the River Thames, the London Eye Ferris wheel provides unique views of the city.  In the evening, London offers numerous options for independent dining and entertainment.  Or, join your tour manager for the optional London Dinner & Theatre excursion (see Optional Excursions).  (Breakfast)

some hotels could have been better

It was jam packed with every place I wanted to go and see. I especially love my photo of us setting out on the night time river cruise in St Petersburg and the Peter...

I really did not buy much and what I did buy was small gifts for others .

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

Too rushed. Optional tour rather too short

Tourists get more access to royal family residences with 'exclusive tours' of Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle

A picture of Balmoral Castle exterior with some colourful gardens

Rooms at Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace that were previously off limits will be opened to the public for the first time, giving visitors a sneak peek into royal life.

The royal residences were open to tourists before, but now visitors will be able to see even more of the historical locations and take "exclusive tours" with special guides.

However, it comes at a price.

Tickets for what's called "The Balmoral Experience" cost 100 pounds ($192).

Significant royal residences

Scotland's Balmoral Castle was thought to be Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence, with the late monarch spending her final days there before her death in 2022.

It was something of a retreat for the late monarch, who spent almost every summer of her life at the estate.

"I suppose Balmoral is a place one looks forward to very much," she said in 1992.

"I think granny is the most happy here. I think she really, really loves the Highlands," her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said in 2012.

Buckingham Palace is in central London and is an administrative hub for the royal family.

Its balcony is a centrepiece for mayor royal events, with the royals typically gathering there to wave to crowds below.

Balmoral interior opened for the first time

Before now, access to Balmoral Castle was pretty much restricted to the grounds and the ballroom.

But a series of limited tours will give visitors a more intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's summer home later this year.

Here's how the Balmoral website describes it :

"For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we have been granted permission to take you on a private tour with our experienced guides. "They will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle. "You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family. Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family."

The tours are limited to 40 people per day and will only run in July and August.

Tickets cost 100 pounds, with an extra 50 pounds for afternoon tea.

Balmoral tickets sell out in a day

Within a day after local media reported the new tour, all tickets have sold out , according to the Balmoral Castle website.

On Wednesday, the website was briefly brought down by demand.

"As we are currently experiencing a high demand of bookings, you have been placed in a queue," the website read.

General admission tickets, which covers entry to the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are still available.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their four children pose for a holiday snap in 1972.

More access to Buckingham Palace

Before this announcement, the public could tour 19 state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

But the East Wing — a section of Buckingham Palace which includes the front facade and the famous balcony — has been off limits.

In July and August, "expert guides" will lead small tourist groups through the wing.

It will lead people to a room that leads onto the balcony, according to Royal Collections Trust website .

But it doesn't say if tourists will be able to go out on the balcony.

Adults will have to be pay an extra 75 pounds on top of the standard admission ticket to the state rooms — so it will cost at least 107 pounds.

There are limited tickets available for these tours, which haven't gone on sale yet.
