Brookline Basketball

The Town of Brookline offers two basketball programs for boys and girls beginning in late fall through the winter.

Town Travel League (tryouts required - see Travel Tryouts & Registration )

Joel M. Noe Youth Recreation League

There are also many opportunities available to Brookline boys and girls to play outside of these Town of Brookline sponsored programs.

This section of the website is intended to provide links to nearby AAU programs as well as Camps and Clinics . We will try to update this section of the site frequently as new camp and clinic offerings arise so keep coming back.

In addition to the two Town sponsored programs mentioned above, the Town also offers clinics for boys and girls in grades K through 2. These coed clinics will teach students the basic fundamentals of the game of basketball. Participants will take part in organized drills that teach the basics of basketball, such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive stances. At the end of each session participants will play games using the skills they learned. This is not a team/league based activity. (See the Town of Brookline's Registration page.)

Become a coach, gryphon gear, testimonials.

I would not send this email if I did not think the world of Randy and his ability to make your son better at the game of basketball. He is easily one of, if not THE, best players I have ever coached and more importantly he is a far better human being. He is a tremendous role model and would be a great influence on your son both athletically and personally. It is without any reservation that I recommend his services for anyone looking for a personal trainer this pre-season.

An excellent program that is

An excellent program that is very well run and focuses on the fundamentals of basketball. Coaches are positive role models for the kids. I highly recommend Gryphon!

Coach Randy and the entire

Coach Randy and the entire Gryphons team/staff were absolutely fantastic with the girls (3-4 graders). They all worked efficiently and gave each player significant one on one coaching. talked directly to The staff were knowledgeable of the game. What a great program this is. Our 4th grader excelled with Coach Randy and staff which led her to learning skilled drills. Will do it all over again. Seabrooks Family. #5

We had the best experience

We had the best experience with Randy and all of his coaches this Spring season. Right from the first tryout we could tell he was the coach for my 3rd grade daughter.

I saw a great quote that said a great coach is hard to find and impossible to forget.

Glad we found Coach Randy and his Gryphons Program!

Best Program in Bergen County Gryphon Basketball is the best youth basketball program in the area. The Gryphon’s culture challenges players yet supports their efforts as they learn. It’s easy to see that Coach Randy has both an education background and a love of basketball as teaching is prioritized over winning. My daughter’s confidence and skills improved significantly last season as practices were organized, competitive, fast-paced, and fun. As a parent, the flexible practice options made scheduling easy, and the clear, frequent communication of upcoming events ensured there were no last minute surprises. Gryphon Basketball is the best.

Randy’s training and clinics have been extremely beneficial for my daughters. He develops the ‘whole player’ which has led both of them to enhanced basketball confidence and achievement. From shooting form and passing to dribbling and overall physical agility/performance, working with Randy is making a very positive impact and they are more confident and capable players as a result. My girls look forward to their training sessions and we will continue to utilize his expertise to further develop their skills. We highly recommend Randy and Gryphon to other players and parents.

Randy and his colleagues are great in teaching these kids… Randy has always been a good coach from my oldest daughter to now my youngest daughter… he has the patience of a saint… he is very good to the kids but firm, he will make them follow him to do drills and basketball skills in a nice way whatever they have to do or accomplish… also I like the fact that we have extra training with Coach Rob for strength,  speed and agility… overall I would really recommend kids to join Gryphon Basketball.

My third grade son just played his first season with Coaches Randy and Danny and I have been so incredibly impressed with the Gryphon program. They are patient, compassionate yet competitive coaches who know how to connect with young kids and get the best out of them to help them learn and grow on the court. I can’t say enough about the positive atmosphere that Randy has created. From the beginning to the end of the season my son had a smile on his face and became a better player. You can’t ask for anything more.

I can’t begin to thank you enough for the opportunity to have my daughter play on your team. Personally, I saw so much growth apart from skills and it made me so happy. I absolutely love to watch her play and watch the game in general so I am looking forward to her continuing  to grow in your club. You have an incredible way about yourself and I couldn’t have been happier with you and Coach Danny leading her this season.

My daughter played on a Gryphon’s Team this Spring, attended a camp over the summer, and played on a Gryphon’s team this Fall.  She had a lot of fun and her basketball skills improved greatly. She has been coached by Randy , Mike, Sara, and Danny; all of the them were extremely positive and excellent teachers of the game.  I especially like that fact that Gryphon’s program does not interfere with our town winter travel season.  I highly recommend the Gryphon program to other families!

Our daughter recently wrapped up her first season playing for Coach Randy and the Gryphons on the 4th/5th grade team. At first she was skeptical to play for an AAU team, but coach did a great job of getting the players from different towns to become comfortable playing together. He rarely misses a teaching moment when it’s needed during practices and games. His patience, encouragement, and leadership with the players are greatly appreciated.

Overall her first season on the team has been rewarding, as she has made new friends, and he coached the team to the playoffs. She is looking forward to a new season with the Gryphons. Thank you Coach Randy!

Randy DeFeo possesses outstanding knowledge of the game of basketball.  He excelled as a player at Ridgewood High School where he led his team to a state championship (2004-2005.)  He also succeeded as a point guard at the Division III level at Bowdoin College.  His work ethic and expertise serve him well as a coach at the high school level and as an instructor at the youth levels.  Randy has an energy and passion for the game that is contagious amongst the players he coaches.  His attention to detail and his ability to communicate effectively makes him an outstanding candidate for one on one coaching for boys and girls.  Coach DeFeo conducts thorough, challenging work-outs that encapsulate all areas of the game. Players of all ages will improve their fundamentals and raise their level of play under his guidance.  I highly recommend Randy as a high quality instructor of the game of basketball.

Our middle school aged son has improved dramatically due to his work with Coach Randy.   Training with Randy has been a great supplement to team practices and games and has led to much better shooting, ball handling and footwork.  Also, our son enjoys the workouts.  The drills are appropriately challenging but fun at the same time.  Perhaps most importantly, Randy has bonded with our son and instilled a sense of confidence that has had an even greater impact than improved on the court skills.

Randy has been coaching my daughter in basketball for about a year now.  He has a keen sense of how to get the most out of her, and the other girls on the team, yet he maintains a respectful manner and tone in his approach.  No crazy yelling or screaming.  This is something that you quickly realize is not common as the girls play against other teams/towns.  As a result of this approach, my daughter has expressed an interest in getting better and working on her game.  We signed her up for 5 workouts with Randy and wow, the results are amazing!  Randy has a great ability to draw out her competitive nature and keep her working hard toward improving herself.  Everything has been enhanced from her basketball skills to her confidence as she continues to develop her game.  The results on the court are great and a lot of fun to watch too!  I highly recommend Randy to anyone who has the desire to improve their basketball skills.

Randy is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who strikes an effective balance of seriousness and fun in his instruction — he creates a very positive learning environment. Our 14 year old daughter and 10 year old son (both travel players) have found his advice and techniques to be easy to understand, retain and implement into their games.  Both have improved and grown more confident under Randy’s guidance and they (and we) can see very practical results from the sessions — a very positive experience all around.

I’m a guy who has played basketball at the college level and spent many long hours in various camps, clinics, workouts and leagues, so I can say with first-hand experience that Randy ‘gets it’. He understands what it takes to go from good to great: It’s about taking the fundamentals seriously. It’s about always practicing with extreme repetition at full game speed. And most importantly, he understands that it’s about pushing kids outside their comfort zone, but always with a healthy dose of encouragement. I’ve seen a big improvement in my twin daughters’ confidence and skill levels.

As a Sports Physician I know the importance of communication to an athlete. Randy DeFeo excels at this quality. His approach involves the athlete becoming involved in his own improvement. This is seen in the plan that he and the player discuss before each session. They talk about situations in which they feel a need for improvement and Randy cleverly designs repetitive drills to develop muscle memory. My son Kyle has greatly benefited from his time with Randy and I would recommend him without hesitation.

I’ve known Randy and his family since he was a sophomore at Ridgewood High School. He has always been a class act – the kind of person I would want my kids learning from and emulating. My freshman daughter is excited to be a part of Gryphon Basketball. I also find the individual and small group lessons that Randy gives to be so much more productive than the large, informal “group clinics” that other groups offer.

I sent my son Shane to work with Randy to prepare for his High School tryouts. Randy worked Shane hard, but in a fun way that made him want to keep coming back. He improved his shooting form as well as his handling skills, but most importantly he went into tryouts with a high level of confidence that he would be successful. I would highly recommend Randy to all players who are looking to take their game to the next level.

My son Patrick had the chance to workout with Randy prior to the current basketball season. Randy did great job of reinforcing the fundamentals of the game, gave “at home” drills to reinforce what he was teaching during the workouts and was a very positive influence during the entire process. Randy is a great teacher, motivator and I highly recommend him if you would like to help your child bring their b-ball game to the next level.

“For those of you that know Randy, he is passionate, knowledgeable, and very positive. He has a genuine interest in helping our players develop and he will be very hands-on with these teams.

Travel Teams

BSC participates in the Boston Area Youth Soccer league (BAYS). Brookline Soccer Club teams are typically referred to as “Town Travel Teams" because we play other towns and travel to those games. BAYS organizes teams by school grade, for example: Boys Grade 4 or Girls Grade 7 with certain age cutoffs.

Fall Season - Grades 4-8 Travel Teams, Grade 3 House League* Spring Season - Grades 3-8 Travel Teams

*In the Fall, the BSC hosts a 3rd Grade House League. There are no trouts for the House League. Anyone registered (typically opens in late June) will be placed on a Fall House League team.  We group players by school for house league teams. Players are evaluated throughout the Fall season and transition into 3rd Grade Travel Teams for the Spring Season. Players are placed on 3rd Grade Travel Teams according to their ability level. Participation in the Fall House League does not guarantee placement on a Spring Travel Team.

  • Parent Coaches:  Most of BSC’s Grade 3 and Grade 4 teams (both boys and girls) are coached by parent volunteers. Prior experience coaching or playing soccer is not required to be an excellent parent coach. Parents receive training on running practices and coaching games from the club. Most parents find the coaching experience very rewarding.
  • Director of Coaching - To guide and oversee the development of all players and coaches within the club.
  • Technical Directors - To provide mentorship to our volunteer 3rd and 4th Grade Coaches.
  • Head Coaches for Grade 5-8 Teams.
  • Team Managers:  Parent volunteers can serve as a Team Manager and play an essential and helpful role reducing the administrative burden upon the coaches.

Weekly Team Training Sessions: Acceptance of a player spot on a BSC team includes a commitment to attend weekly team training. Most teams have two training sessions per week at fields located in Brookline. Schedules are set by the club in conjunction with the parent or professional coaches working around available fields. The number of training sessions varies by age group with some older teams having additional practices.

  • Logistics: Parents often carpool to and from training sessions and the coach or manager will help facilitate this with team contact lists at the start of the season. Players who accept a spot on a BSC team must be prepared to give team training sessions priority over other after-school activities.
  • Travel Required:  All of our soccer teams are travel teams and represent Brookline in competition against other towns in the greater Boston area. If you are placed on a team, you can expect to travel as far as an hour away from Brookline. Some games will also be as close as Newton or Dedham.
  • BAYS League:  We compete in the BAYS (Boston Area Youth Soccer) league, the largest local soccer league in the eastern part of the state. There are separate boys and girls teams in each age group. All teams play a 10-game season in the fall and another 10-game season in the spring. In almost all cases the team assignments remain the same for both the Fall and Spring season.
  • Schedule:  BAYS games are scheduled for Saturdays. A small percentage of games are postponed due to weather or other state of emergency, make-ups can be scheduled for Sundays, as a second game on Saturdays or weekday evenings. Home games are played in Brookline, and away games involve travel to other towns. Parents often arrange car pools to make travel to/from games easier.

Attendance Requirements

  • We expect that BSC will take precedence over other athletic commitments in the event of repeated schedule conflicts.  The general rule is that BSC players must attend at least 75% their BSC team’s training sessions and games during the course of a season, with excused absences for school, religious and family events when prior notification is provided to the coach.

Additional Events

  • Tournaments:  Many teams participate in one or two weekend tournaments over holiday weekends like Columbus Day or Memorial Day. Tournaments may be local or in another region as determined by each individual team with their coaches. Tournaments typically cost around $50 per player and are collected by the coach or team manager. Participation in holiday weekend tournaments, particularly at the younger ages, is optional.
  • Futsal (Indoor Soccer):  Many teams also elect to participate as a team in winter indoor soccer—called “futsal”. This is a modified version of soccer played with a smaller, less bouncy ball on a standard basketball court. Participation in futsal is not officially managed by BSC, but instead parents or coaches often organize this themselves. Some players who participate in winter sports cannot join for futsal but typically many teams have enough players to create one or even two teams. Futsal games are typically played on weekends in a variety of towns in the area including Brookline. Participation in futsal is completely optional.
  • Registration Fees:  The regular program cost, including registration fees, uniforms, equipment, and other expenses, is about $430-$630 for the year (two seasons) billed through an online registration process. Please note that costs may change from season to season.
  • Financial Aid:  Registration fees can be reduced or waived in cases of financial need through a confidential process.

Requirements

  • Eligibility:  BSC is open to all children who live in Brookline or attend school in Brookline.
  • Grade/Age Restrictions:  Players who are in a certain grade but are older than the age cut off set by BAYS cannot play with their grade. Certain rules about age limits are enforced by BAYS and cannot be waived by BSC.
  • Minimum Grade to Tryout:  BSC does not allow players to try out unless they are currently enrolled in 2nd grade at the time of tryouts.
  • Gender Labels:   BAYS organizes teams by gender (“boys” or “girls” teams). However, BAYS has stated that, for the purposes of registration on gender-based teams, a player may register with the gender team with which the player identifies, and confirmation sufficient for guaranteeing access shall be satisfied by documentation or evidence that shows the stated gender is sincerely held, and part of a person’s core identity.  If you have a question about this issue, please contact the BSC Executive Director using the contact link at the bottom of the page.

How to Join a Travel Team: Spring Tryouts

New Players: Any new players wishing to join a BSC Grade 4 through 8 team, must participate in a free open tryout held each year in the Spring. This single tryout determines placements for all Fall and Spring teams for the following seasons. We aim to make  tryouts as fair and impartial as possible.

Returning Players: All players need to tryout every year and placements from prior years are not guaranteed. Players must arrive to tryouts wearing non-club soccer jerseys. Players are evaluated by an objective group of player evaluators who are typically parent and professional coaches for older age groups.

No Guaranteed Spots: Current Brookline Soccer Club players are not guaranteed a place on the following year’s teams.

Tryout Schedule: The tryout schedule will be posted on the BSC website and social media on the website and pre-registration is required for new players.  Returning players will be automatically registered but must attend tryouts.

Placement Not Guaranteed:  We unfortunately cannot accommodate everyone who is interested in our program.  Players develop at different ages, so we encourage players who are not placed on a BSC team to keep playing and attend tryouts in following years.

After Tryouts

Email Notification: Players will be notified of the tryout results by email in June after the current BAYS season has ended, usually after the Brookline school year.

Registration Required: Players who make teams will be given instructions on how to register on our website. Players who fail to register by the July deadline risk losing their spot. Also, be forewarned that your designated practice days will not be known at the time of registration. Players will receive their team and coach assignments in late summer.

Placements: Team placements are based on ability. Our goal is to have each player playing with teammates and against opponents at the same skill level. Requests to be placed with friends or schoolmates will not be honored.

Waitlist: Players with the requisite skills to play on a travel team who are not selected due to space limitations will be placed on a waiting list. We are often able to place several players on the waiting list at some point during the subsequent year.
