Top 10 Tourist Spots in Camarines Sur

Table of Contents

A s the largest province in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Camarines Sur does not disappoint. The province has several beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and a generally relaxing and laid-back atmosphere compared to seaside destinations like Siargao or La Union. It also has lesser-known historical churches and landmarks, but just like other provinces in the Philippines, Camarines Sur has its own charm.

Top Ten Places to Visit in Camarines Sur

The climate here is very tropical. The peak seasons are summertime, and the influx of tourists decreases during the rainy season (usually from July to September) and gradually increases again from October onwards. However, regardless of the season, there is plenty to see in this unexploited and quaint province of Camarines Sur. Here are some of the tourist spots you can visit in Camarines Sur:

1. Lake Buhi

Lake Buhi

Lake Buhi is recognized as the source of the smallest commercially harvested fish in the world, the Sinarapan. A huge portion of the province’s local industry is agricultural and fishing. Although most towns have their own fisheries or plantations, Lake Buhi spotlights the entire province. If you can’t go fishing here, you can always go on a short boat ride and appreciate the fresh air and the view of the not-so-distant mountain of Iriga.

2. Mt. Iriga

Mt. Iriga

Also known as Mt. Asog, Mt. Iriga is an active volcano about a kilometer away from Lake Buhi. It’s already a wonderful sight to behold from afar, and up close, Mt. Iriga proves to be more than just for the eyes. Although it is labeled as an active volcano, the last time it erupted was in 1642, and it has not had any visible volcanic activity since then. This is why its crater is covered with thick layers of trees and vegetation, and hiking along the trail will give you a fantastic view of it.

3. Mt. Isarog National Park

ATV Adventure in Mount Isarog National Park

This inactive volcano was declared a national park in 1938 by the national government and is the highest rainforest mountain in Southern Luzon. The way up the summit is not your ordinary ten to twenty-minute afternoon hike. The way up can take hours, and all hikers are prohibited from hiking up and down within the same day to avoid accidents on the way down. On the way, you will see various types of birds, insects, a few faunas, and lots and lots of grass. Previous hikers do leave trails because it is a protected area, so you will have to make your own!

4. Malabsay Falls

Malabsay Falls by Red Envolope Photos

If you’re intimidated by the trek that Mt. Isarog poses, Malabsay Falls, a relatively short hike from Mt. Isarog National Park’s entrance, is a great alternate route. The waters of Malabsay can get very cold because the water comes directly from the inactive volcano’s peak, so be sure to be prepared for the temperature. Before entering, you must pay a small fee (Php 20 to 50). This also applies to Mt. Isarog.

5. Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia

Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia

The City of Naga is often called the Pilgrim City of Bicol. This Basilica is the only one of its kind in the whole region, so it attracts hundreds of local and foreign tourists. The church’s construction started in 1976 but was only completed in 1981. Though relatively small compared to other churches in Luzon, it has high ceilings and stained glass windows that have been well-preserved. Inside is the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

6. Lahuy Island

Lahuy Island

If you’re a fan of nature, beaches, and tranquility, you’ll be pleased to know that Lahuy Island has all those three combined. Lahuy Island is about 10 kilometers long and 3 km wide, with crystal clear waters and cream-white sands. Bordering the beach are thick forests. Getting here requires a long boat ride from the neighboring island or central Caramoan town.

7. Matukad Island

Matukad Island in Caramoan

Aside from being the perfect beach island getaway, Matukad also has rock formations that you can marvel at and climb on. This one of the most famous islands in Caramoan and Camarines Sur’s entirety can get crowded during peak seasons, usually from April to June. The island also owes some of its fame because it is where the local reality TV show “Survivor” was filmed. In 2016, the entire island was temporarily closed for this.

8. Our Lady of Peace Grotto Shrine Park

The Lady of Peace Grotto enshrines a 26-foot tall statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is considered the biggest and tallest one in the Philippines. The statue is pure white and stands in the middle of a piece of a platform with no roof, making it look like it is glowing under the sun. At night, the statue is lighted to guide the fishermen. Getting to the statue requires climbing almost 530 steps, so be prepared. It is said that the monument can grant three wishes.

9. Lahos Island

Lahos Island via Tripadvisor

Hop on a 10-minute boat ride from Paniman Beach in Caramoan and prepare to take a picture of the massive limestone formations on the way. You will probably wonder how the heavy limestone rocks leading to Lahos Island float delicately on the blue waters. While Lahos is not as large as Matuklad, it boasts very shallow and clear waters, and you can swim under some of the protruding karst formations! Snorkeling, swimming, or simply sitting on the sand will make you enjoy this secluded island like your own.

10. Nalalata Falls

Nalalata Falls by Jovial Wanderer

What’s an excellent way to chill after a long hike? Swim in Nalalata Falls’ cool waters, and get a natural massage from the pressured falling water. What’s a better way to chill after a long hike? Rappelling! The rock behind the waterfalls has been smoothened out due to the continuous flow of water, and the flat, 50-foot-high surface serves as an excellent spot for rappelling while at the same time getting to bathe. Some guides can assist you, and rentable equipment is at the entrance. Compared to Malabsay Falls, Nalalata is a relatively easy hike once you drop off at the starting point.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE | TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Here’s your Caramoan Island Travel Guide.

Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur: An All-in-One Countryside Adventure

Coming from the city, the rural areas would remind us of the simplicity of life where nature makes for a centerpiece. For a region so remote as the Caramoan in the province of Camarines Sur, this notion is true with it being so rustic and relaxed as enjoyed by the people who understand that life need not have to be complex to be cherished.

But like many underdeveloped areas of the country, Caramoan is a region that is preserved for its natural beauty and is something that will remind us of how amazing Mother Nature truly is as is, without human manipulation.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

Caramoan Island, Location and Geography

Bounded by seawater on three sides, the land that which the municipality of Caramoan belongs to is a peninsula around the northeastern part of the province. At the north and the east lies the Maqueda Channel which separates Caramoan from its neighboring island-province of Catanduanes; at the south is the Gulf of Lagonoy; and at the west, the municipality of Presentacion.

In general, much of Caramoan’s terrain is considered rugged. This easily gives the region an image of mountains and jungles to climb and venture to, respectively. But Caramoan is also an area that has an offshoot of islands by the sea, namely Haponan, Batibagan, Basul, Quinabungan, and Lahuy, to name a few.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

 Brief History

It is not known how the natives called Caramoan before the time of colonization by the Spaniards. However, the earliest recorded name of present-day Caramoan was “gluta de leche” which was given by the Dutch merchants who conducted a gold mine operation in Lahuy and visited the nearby inhabited region for trade. With a name that hints of “milk,” the name was derived from the image of the “milkdrop-like” stalagmites seen around Guta Port.

By the time the Spaniards came, the name was subsequently changed to Caramoan based on the name of the sea turtles called “Carahan” which were abundant in the area at the time. BuT the name “Caramoan” did not have its official use until 1619.

Things to Do In Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur

Caramoan is quite an expansive place with so many offerings. Whether it is on land or water, the place has unique sights to get excited for.

As a land of both flat and uneven terrain as well as being a host to sites that mostly only tourists venture to by foot, Caramoan makes for an interesting prospect to stretch, not just only one’s legs, but also one’s horizon.

However, there is no denying that some of the best sites in Caramoan are to be found by doing some island-hopping. While the islands may be few, these small numbers make for just a perfect amount to explore them all in just the same day.

Perhaps, one major perk of even doing so is the idea of getting a dynamic experience with the activity. As each island is unique in both feature and location, each landmass offers a unique angle that partially describes what makes Caramoan inherently attractive.

Allow me to introduce to you the top tourist destinations which you may wish to visit one day. These may vary depending on your taste as well as the season of your visit. Here is the list.

Bulang-bugang Cave, Caramoan

This underwater cave which can be reached by passing through a small opening at the bottom part of a massive rock formation is a must-see place for those who would like to try a much extreme activity. You have to be careful since it tends to be slippery and the rocks are a little bit sharp.

Cagbalinad Island

The rock formation which also serves as a place for rock climbing is so serene. If you feel that you need some quiet time away from the busy and chaotic environ, head here and do some sightseeing, rock climbing, or just a restful night.

Cotivas Island, Caramoan

The pinkish color of the fine sand found on this island is what makes it unique compared to the other beaches or islands. The palm trees around the area along with the clear water is very inviting and refreshing. I would suggest that you visit the place during low tide for you to fully enjoy your stroll experience.

Kulapnit Cave

Kulapnit is also known as a bat in the local language. With that being said, this cave houses a lot of bat species! The photos you could take here might be a bit eerie, but I can assure you that this is a fun and thrilling activity to try.

Lahos Island, Caramoan

The swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling activities here are what makes the place unique than the other scenic beaches. Might as well head here and experience the beauty of the place plus the thrilling adventure through the activities.

Layahan and Hugsad Falls

The distance of these falls may be a little bit far, but these are also equally amazing. Going her entails trekking, but the view and the freshwater of the falls and the bottom or basin area are very indulging.

Manlawi Island, Caramoan

The sandbar which is possible during low tide, as well as the roaming floating cottage, is the best experience to see and try in Sabitang Laya. On the cottage, you can ride in here and have your lunch while on tour! While the sandbar will give you the chance to enjoy the picturesque scene or take a bath in the blue-green waters.

Matukad Island

A hidden lagoon seems to play a mysterious role in this place. Why? The lagoon is only visible if you reach a particular area. Though the hike to this viewpoint is tough, the view of the biggest milkfish on the lake is satisfying and rewarding. The trees will provide a translucent shade for those who would like to stay overnight for a camping experience.

Omang Cave, Caramoan Island

The stalactite formation found inside this mystique cave is what makes it famous. The cathedral-like view of it which allows the light to enter from the top area illuminates a different array of colors and shines on the rocks. Thus, it is a sight and an experience to behold.

Sabitang Laya, Caramoan

This is a combination of two stretches of an island, and I am sure that you will find this place not only scenic but at the same time, fun and exciting. The 1.2-Kilometers stretch length of the powdery white fine sand allows one to take a quiet and serene walk while the water is merely indulging in its every being.

Tinago Island, Caramoan

The narrow passageway will lead to this island, and from the name itself, it is something that can be considered as “ tinago ” or hidden. The sandy beach paired with the freshwater is perfect for some swimming, picnic, or merely sightseeing activity.

Gone are the days that you have to go very far to experience a fantastic vacation. Just head to Caramoan, and I know that you can already try out these best activities.

Siruma, Camarines Sur: Paradise Unlocked

Spend the weekend by the sea, far away from city. by Pi Palaganas-Orillosa | June 06, 2017

Siruma is one of the towns in the fourth district of Camarines Sur. It’s well-known in the region for enchanting beaches that can only be conquered through long rough road trips. But the trip is always worth it.

On a recent trip, we went farther down Siruma to the Angelica Paradise Beach & Resort , a secluded beach resort in Barangay Pinitan, about 20 minutes by drive from the center of Siruma proper. It’s a location accessible by car, or if you’re not driving, you can make arrangements for a motorcycle or tricycle transfer from the town proper.

Brace yourselves, the roads are tough. But like I said, it’s all worth it. What will welcome you is a paradise hiding a long, beautiful stretch of white sand.

The view from the third floor veranda of Angelica Paradise Beach & Resort

The view from the other side 3rd floor veranda

You’ll realize just how secluded this location is the moment you see the rolling hills of green surrounding the place. I don’t know what else to say to describe this place except for breathtaking and awesome.

The beach is further down the resort and the dirt paths are lush with tropical trees. Head out early in the morning, and marvel see the ombre sea.

Downhill we go to reach the water *Singing Moana theme song intro while walking down carefully*

The shore and the sea will stretch out in front of you, all you have to do is choose where to stay and play.

The path takes you to the shallower shore. And, yes, when the tide is low, you can walk on the sandbar and cross to the other side of the beach.

The water is deeper on the other side. It gets up to the waist in a short walk.

Clear waters, white sand. <3

The shore and shallow waters, divided by sandbar.

Most of the time, the water is calm, with no big waves. Siruma’s beaches are best for those who just want to relax in shallow waters while enjoying the scenery of the countryside.

See, it’s as calm as a turtle. Perfect for meditation.

There are also other parts of the island that look like different scenery like these rock formations.

On the farther side of the beach, there are pine-like Agoho trees that look almost perfectly spaced from each other — it makes for a great Instagram backdrop.

You can also rent a cottage in the area

Now, here are the things you will need to prepare to reach the destination.

From Naga City via Commute by land

Travel time by land will take up to 5-6 hours depending on the weather, since there are spots that are muddy and deep craters.

You can go from Naga to Siruma by jeepney. There’s a choice between air-conditioned jeepneys and regular jeepneys. One way fare is PHP150 per head for the air-conditioned option.

There’s only one trip going to Siruma and one trip going back to the Naga City proper. The trip going is between 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Going back to Naga will be at 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. It’s better to arrange the transport at least a day before so you can choose an air-conditioned jeepney. Trust me, it’s a long, rough trip — you’d want to be cool at the very least.

Depending on the size of your group, you can arrange a special service going to Angelica Paradise Beach and Resort. You can also arrange a pick-up from the resort going back to Naga City.

You can also look for Tiyo Tibo, he’s mastered the road to Siruma over the years — the only con is his jeepney doesn’t have AC. But he’ll probably give you a good deal.

By Motorboat

You will need to go to the Tinambac port early in the morning to get a boat going to the resort. Your wait time will depend on the availability of the boats, but the travel time is shorter, 1 to ½ hours.

Given the nature of the journey to Siruma, it’s not a top of mind destination that people flock to on the regular. And this is what makes it such a fresh and wonderful place. For more information about the accommodations, you can visit Angelica Paradise Beach and Resort’s website at www.angelicaresort.com .
