Discover the Wilder Side of New Jersey in this 70,000-Acre Wilderness Area

This article on Delaware Water Gap camping is brought to you by RovR, whose high-end coolers are the perfect addition to your next Delaware River adventure.

Located between New Jersey and Pennsylvania is a slim river that slices through the Appalachian Mountains. Called the Delaware Water Gap, this long stretch of water makes up the southern end of one of the Northeast’s most prominent camping spots.

Rich in activities and easy to access, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is protected land that stretches from the Delaware River in New Jersey to the border of New York. At nearly 70,000 acres, the Delaware Water Gap area offers access to protected wilderness rich in history and recreational offerings.

Plan The Best Delaware Water Gap Camping Trip

It’s also a camper’s paradise. For those lucky enough to stumble upon the Delaware Water Gap, there is a plethora of options when it comes to camping out for the night— whether you’re looking for camping in Pennsylvania or camping in New Jersey .

Developed Campsites Near the Delaware Water Gap

There are three developed campgrounds in the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, each of which offers its own experience and access points to different portions of the 70,000-acre wilderness area.

1. Dingman’s Campground

Dingmans Campground is open from April to October and offers a whopping 133 campsites, which range in location from the thick forest to the river’s edge. Group sites can accommodate up to 40 campers, and the campground includes RV sites, only a handful of which have full hook-up capabilities.

Despite the large quantity of sites, Dingmans Campground is well-hidden from any major roadways, and the surrounding forest serves up plenty of solitude to crowd-conscious campers. The campground has amenities like a camp store and also offers sponsored river trips for families seeking a way to enjoy the Delaware River’s floatable waters.

2. Mohican Outdoor Center

Mohican Outdoor Center is the only campground in the Delaware Water Gap area that offers access year-round camping, making it a popular option in the off-season months. With only seven primitive sites that are reserved on a walk-in basis only.

The Mohican Outdoor Center also has Indian Point campsites: three tent platforms and two rustic ground sites. A visitor center with a gathering space, a fireplace, and showers are located close by.

For those looking for a higher-end camping experience, the Mohican Outdoor Center’s major offering is its cabins, which can accommodate anywhere between six and 16people. A dining hall and boathouse located on the property are also available for rent for large groups and wedding parties.

Perhaps the most unique of the Mohican Outdoor Center’s offerings are their guided trips, provided by the Appalachian Mountain Club. Choose from a variety of adventures including five-day family trips, weekend trips, and hut-to-hut hiking. This is a great way to bring your Delaware Water Gap camping experience to the next level.

3. Worthington State Forest Campground

Woman walking uphill through foggy forest.

Worthington State Forest Campground is the third car camping option located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It has close to 70 primitive campsites, some of which are located on the banks of the Delaware River. Sites are large enough to accommodate both tents and trailers though may be on the small side for RV campers. Group campsites are also available at the Worthington State Forest Campground and can fit up to 35 guests.

Along with excellent access to the Delaware River, the campground offers prime proximity to major trails in the area, including a 7-mile section of the Appalachian Trail. The Dunnfield Creek Natural Area is another prominent trail in the area, giving hikers the chance to journey along Dunnfield Creek through some of the state’s best natural forest.

Boat-In and Riverside Campsites

Two people paddling a canoe in the Delaware Water Gap.

Fortunately for kayakers, boaters, and canoers, Delaware Water Gap camping also includes the option to stay right along the river. Although most campsites by the river are available on a first come, first served basis, there are a couple of options for boaters and kayakers looking to reserve a riverside campsite.

The Alosa River Campsites

The Alosa River Campsites are a cluster of six campsites reservable under special guidelines, as they are meant specifically for boaters traveling the river on long-distance trips. For a one-night stay at the Alosa River Campsites, boaters must be planning to travel at least 14 miles along the river. Due to the nature of the campsites, camping is limited to one night.

Rules for camping along the Delaware River are the same as backpacking. Fires are permitted in existing fire grates only, and trash, food and other waste must be packed out. Soap and other artificial substances are to be used on a limited basis and dumped in soil running away from the river.

A list of Delaware Water Gap riverside campsites is included below (from nps.gov ):

Activities for Delaware Water Gap Campers

While you’re getting your feet wet in the Delaware Water Gap camping scene, take advantage of the vast array of activities the region has to offer alongside its spectacular campsites.

Water gap view from the top of Mt. Minsi.

Climbing continues to be one of the most popular ways to experience the Delaware Water Gap area. Almost all of the climbing requires trad gear but ranges in difficulty from 5.0 to 5.12d, making it a perfect place to climb for both beginners and experts.

Mount Minsi is the most popular of the trad climbing destinations on the Pennsylvania side of the river, offering a wide variety of routes and terrain.

On the New Jersey side, Mt. Tammany is the place to climb, featuring more than 100 easy-to-access routes. The rock at Mt. Tammany is metaquartzite and holds extremely well.

Ice climbing is also possible in the winter but is condition dependent.

Hiking is one of the favorite activities in the Delaware Water Gap area, with dozens of hiking trails providing access to some of the region’s best views. The Mt. Tammany summit hike is a 3.4-miler that brings you to the top of one of the tallest points in the area. While it is a strenuous hike, the distance makes it doable with families and older children, particularly with some snack breaks built in.

Other hikes in the region include the Hornbecks Creek Trail, a family-friendly out-and-back that winds along the Creek, with excellent views of the wildlands and a spectacular waterfall at the trail’s end.

The Mount Minsi Loop is one of the longer hikes in the region at 5.2 miles. The trail intersects a portion of the Appalachian Trail and features several pristine viewpoints. This hike is particularly beautiful in the fall, when the rhododendrons are still in bloom and the colors are changing.

Fisher in a kayak in the water gap holding his catch.

The wide range of fishing opportunities is a huge draw for outdoor enthusiasts and are sure to level up any Delaware Water Gap camping experience. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is home to more than60 species of fish, many of which populate the Delaware River. Among the most commonly caught are the American shad, brook trout native to the Delaware Water Gap region, and yellow perch.

Visitors interested in fishing will need to acquire a fishing license for either Pennsylvania or New Jersey when fishing in the Delaware River. For smaller streams that run alongside the Delaware River, a license is required for the state in which the stream is located.

Paddle Sports

Kayaking and canoeing is another popular activity in the region. The Delaware Water Gap permits kayaking and canoeing in the Delaware River year-round. For beginners to the sport, several companies in the Delaware Water Gap region off guided trips for rafting, canoeing and tubing.

Boating on the Delaware River is one of the best ways to view the Delaware Water Gap’s diverse ecological features, including populations of bald eagles, herons, deer, black bears and the multiple species of fish. Make sure you know where to baot because both calm water and whitewater exist on the Delaware River. As mentioned, a popular option for advanced kayakers and rafters is to camp along the river.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The resort maintains a beautiful Sandy Beach and Private Boat Launch. Overnight guests of The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort enjoy exclusive access to Shawnee’s Sandy Beach and Private Boat Launch. The general public, locals, friends, and guests of Wyndham Timeshare Units do not have access to Shawnee’s Sandy Beach or Private Boat Launch. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area operates a public river access called “Smithfield Beach” approximately 3-miles north of Shawnee on River Road. The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort recommends that the general public, locals, friends, and guests of Wyndham Timeshare Units access the Delaware River at Smithfield Beach.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is located on the banks of the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Delaware River. Guests of the resort have exclusive access to our pristine location and private river access. The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is the only canoe, kayak and raft livery on the Delaware River that offers 3-mile trips. While we also offer longer trips, most guests prefer 3-mile river trips. 3-mile trips can take anywhere between 45-minutes and 3-hours to complete – based on how vigorously you paddle. We are able to offer 3-mile river trips because the resort operates a private river access. Guests of the Shawnee Inn only need to be transported once! This is an incredibly pleasing benefit for our guests. It saves so much time! Spend less time waiting to go and be picked up and more time on the river. Guests of Shawnee are transported upstream and pull out at the resort.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort rents canoes, kayaks and rafts in the Poconos. The Shawnee Inn operates a private livery on the Delaware River.

It depends on the experience you desire. A kayak is ideal for a single paddler. Kayaks are swift and easily maneuverable. The kayaks we rent at Shawnee are very stable. They are more stable than canoes, but less stable than rafts. A kayak is the perfect craft for a paddler who is confident in their skills and desires more independence. A canoe requires two paddlers. Canoes are very fast but less maneuverable than kayaks. While the canoes we rent at Shawnee are very stable, they can tip and it is important that passengers do not stand or lean too far in canoes. Canoes are larger vessels and can store more items than a kayak. Canoes are great for parties of 2 or 3 who prefer to share a watercraft and desire to have more maneuverability and speed than a raft. A raft is perfect for parties four or greater. Rafts at The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort accommodate 4 – 8 paddlers. Rafts are incredibly stable. While it is easy to maneuver a raft, it is less maneuverable than a canoe or kayak. Rafts are also the slowest vessel we rent at Shawnee. Families and groups of friends love rafts. Rafts are perfect for youth paddlers.

Shawnee’s section of the Delaware River is calm and serene. There are is no whitewater and our class of rapids do not exceed level one. While the Delaware River near Shawnee is tranquil, it is important to respect the potential risks that are inherent to any water sport activity. Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard Approved life jacket while canoeing, kayaking or rafting on the Delaware River. If you choose to swim in the Delaware River, it is strongly recommended that you do so with a U.S. Coast Guard Approved life jacket. Never consume controlled substances or alcoholic beverages while recreating on the Delaware River.

The section of the Delaware River near Shawnee is classified as exceptional high quality for its cleanliness. There are federal protections that protect the Delaware River from certain pollutants and development that often degrades the quality of a waterway. Two designations that ensures the Delaware River stays pristine is the “Special Protection Waters” and “Wild and Scenic” programs. In short, the Delaware River near Shawnee is exceptionally clean.

The best adventures in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a beautiful park, full of day hikes, canoeing and kayaking, and sightseeing opportunities.

By: Ethan Constable + Save to a List

canoe trip delaware water gap

With almost 70,000 acres of protected area, the Delaware Water Gap N.R.A is a gem located in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I am fortunate to live next to this beautiful area that attracts nearly 5 million people each year. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

1. Get out on the water

A person on a red kayak is floating on a lake with trees surrounding the shore.

The Delaware River runs through the park and is the main attraction. People visit to paddle the waterway on day trips or for mult-day adventures.

There are many canoe and kayak rental companies if you want to take a river day trip through the park.  Edge of the Woods Outfitters is a great canoe livery company that offers fair prices and an overall fantastic experience. I suggest going on an overnight canoe trip during the fall or spring. The park tends to get crowded on the weekends in the summer, so plan accordingly.

Paddle Milford Beach to Smithsfield Launch   - 15 miles point-to-point Take a few days to paddle and camp along this 15-mile route past beaches, mountains, and along rapids. Start paddling downstream from Milford Beach for 12-13 miles until you reach campsites to spend the night. Day two, paddle 6-7 miles to Walpack Bend where you can pull off at a large campsite on the New Jersey side. Expect heavier traffic here from various boats and campers, so arrive early to snag a spot.

On day three, kayak 8 miles to Smithsfield Launch. This section has some more challenging rapids, so make sure you're experienced enough to maneuver through the fast-moving water. IF you're not feeling confident, stop after two days and end your trip at Walpack Bend.

2. Explore waterfalls

canoe trip delaware water gap

Delaware water gap hiking offers many opportunities to check out waterfalls. If you google waterfalls in the the Delaware Water Gap N.R.A, Bushkill Falls will most likely be the first thing that comes up. While this is a nice place, you have to pay for it and it gets way too crowded.

Raymondskill Falls   - 0.6 mile out-and-back with 178 feet of elevation gain My favorite falls in the park is Raymondskill Falls. Located near the northern-most part of the park, Raymondskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania, made up of three sections for a total of 150 feet of falls. Head to the upper viewing area to see the upper pool, and the lower area for a better view of the entire falls. There are restrooms in the upper parking lot, but the path is steep and uneven so it's not a great place for strollers or other mobility devices.

Note: Swimming and wading are not allowed under the falls or within 50 feet of them. Food and pets are not allowed on this hike or at the falls.

Buttermilk Falls  -

George W. Child's Park

3. Go hiking

canoe trip delaware water gap

Mt. Tammany - 2.3 mile out and back hike with 1115 feet of elevation gain Probably one of the most popular hikes is to hike to the top of Mt. Tammany, located on the New Jersey side of the river. This is a moderate/difficult hike that takes about and hour and a half to reach the top with a 1250 foot elevation gain. The view from the top offers one of the most scenic views of the park. Take the red-dot trail to the top and then the blue-dot trail back to the bottom.

Cliff Park Ridge   - 6.4 miles out-and-back with 700 feet of elevation gain Close by Raymondskill falls is my favorite hike in the park, Cliff Park Ridge. This hike offers stunning views of the upper lands of the park, as well as the Delaware river. This dog-friendly trail is wide and flat, and rises slowly.

canoe trip delaware water gap

There are seemingly endless things to do in this park, from camping on the Delaware River, to hiking to the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania.

I recommend visiting in the summer during the weekday, or anytime in the fall. You will not get bored in this great park located just two hours from Philadelphia and New York City.

We want to acknowledge and thank the past, present, and future generations of all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples whose ancestral lands we travel, explore, and play on. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!

Yep, us too. That's why we send you the best local adventures, stories, and expert advice, right to your inbox.

Delaware Water Gap is known as the "Gateway to the Poconos" and has been a popular vacation destination for centuries. The geographical feature, a distinctive notch in the Appalachian Mountains where the Delaware River cuts between Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany, was once tauted as a "Wonder of the World."

Delaware Water Gap is the name of the geographical feature, the point where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains, as well as the name of a historic small town in Monore County located along the Gap, and the name of the National Recreation Area , which starts just outside the town and encompasses 70,000 acres along the Delaware River.

There are several overlooks within the National Recreation Area that offer great views of the Delaware Water Gap topography.

There is no cost to enter the borough of Delaware Water Gap or to enter the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, although some popular areas within the Recreation Area charge an expanded amenity fee.

There are several beaches located within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area which are open to the public for swimming. Remember to wear a life jacket and practice river safety . While visitors may kayak or boat through the Water Gap, swimming is not permitted in that area.
