Vaccination status and entering Thailand

Proof of vaccination or COVID test is not required to enter Thailand as announced  by the government.

Book your Flight to Thailand

Fly from China to Thailand and land at any internal airport!

Most international airlines follow the rules of the arrival country. If you are transiting through another country, it is best to check with the airline if you need to complete any tests for that country.

Book a Hotel

To find and compare the best hotels available in Thailand, visit Agoda . They allow free booking and cancellation, confirm bookings with hotels and their web page is easy to navigate and compare hotels.

You need to enter an address when traveling to Thailand. The accommodation can be a hotel, home, or a friend’s address.

Organize your Travel Insurance

If you are a foreigner, you should purchase a Travel Insurance policy. Though it is no longer an entry requirement, responsible travelers know the benefits of having insurance while traveling abroad.

Travel Insurance is one of those things that is better to have and not need than need and not have. Travel insurance doesn’t just cover Covid. Comprehensive travel insurance will also cover:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Loss of luggage

The most important thing to know about insurance is that foreign travelers are not eligible for any form of free medical care in Thailand. No matter the circumstance, if a Chinese citizen is diagnosed with Covid, needs medical attention, misses a flight, or loses their luggage, they will need to pay for it. Depending on the severity, this could amount to thousands of Yuan in out-of-pocket expenses.

There are multiple reasons to protect yourself when traveling. Many visitors to Thailand choose AXA Insurance Thailand. It is a trusted company that offers comprehensive insurance to travelers from around the world. Their policies are straightforward with good coverage.

Some advantages to AXA Insurance are:

  • Recognized and trusted by Thai authorities and medical facilities.
  • Easy to apply online and approved in minutes.
  • Competitive pricing and cover.
  • Has no waiting period and covers Covid-related incidents, including asymptomatic cases.
  • Provides customers with a  Certificate of Insurance. This certificate contains all relevant information needed by medical professionals or if making a claim.

Arriving in Thailand – Best Practices

So what can you expect when landing in Thailand? Here are a few things that will help you enjoy your trip and show respect to local Thai people.

Wearing Masks

Masks are no longer compulsory but still recommended when in public places. You see many Thai people (and visitors) still wear masks when out and about. It is recommended to wear a mask when visiting restaurants or public venues. You will not get in trouble if you don’t wear a mask, but it is a case of “do as the locals do”. It is about respect and consideration.

Paperwork to Prepare

Though Thailand Pass is removed, and travelers do not need to provide proof before entry, it is best to prepare a few documents before arriving.

  • Proof of Travel Insurance
  • Visa on Arrival Form and 1 photo
  • 2,000 THB Visa on Arrival fee

This will speed up your processing time before leaving your country, or if asked to provide vaccination or testing proof in a random check. These documents can be presented in digital form, but airlines, Immigration, and Health Officers will appreciate the extra effort if you print them.

Following the above advice will ensure you have a smooth trip to Thailand and allow you to escape the Covid lock-downs that many Chinese people have had to endure recently. You can enjoy a few weeks of well-deserved vacation in the tropics.

Thailand sees Chinese tourism soar as visa requirement dropped

Less bureaucracy and more flights are luring Chinese visitors back to Thailand in a boost to the tourism industry.

Tourists taking pictures beneath lanterns in Bangkok's Chinatown

Bangkok, Thailand – Bangkok’s Chinatown, lit up by red-lanterns and decorative banners to celebrate the Lunar New Year holidays, is bustling.

As the region welcomed the Year of the Dragon last weekend, ethnic Chinese Thais thronged temples to light candles and pray for good fortune.

Inside the glowing red interior of Wat Mangkon Kamalawat – the largest Chinese temple in Bangkok – women wore traditional cheongsam dresses and took photos with their loved ones.

Outside, in the hustle and bustle of Yaowarat Road, lion dancers performed as visitors – Thais and legions of tourists – crowded the street, sampling the food and shopping from stalls in the market.

Many were from China, with official figures showing hundreds of thousands of Chinese nationals chose to spend the holiday, which began on February 10, in Thailand where they no longer need to get a visa.

“Destinations in Southeast Asia traditionally rely on a strong Lunar New Year holiday to kick-start the tourism calendar,” Gary Bowerman, a tourism analyst in Kuala Lumpur, told Al Jazeera.

“Thailand has positioned itself astutely to capture outbound travel demand from China with its bilateral visa waiver and aggressive marketing into the Chinese market led by the prime minister. This resonates well with Chinese tourists and has encouraged Chinese airlines to add more capacity over [the] Chinese New Year.”

Lion dance in Bangkok. The lion is red

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin started his push to lure more arrivals from China in September when he announced a temporary visa waiver for Chinese tourists. The short-term agreement soon became permanent after Thailand and China signed an indefinite mutual visa exemption for their nationals to visit each other’s country starting from March 1.

Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, says Chinese arrivals have been encouraging.

“It’s very exciting and [a] successful Chinese New Year, and it is a positive sign for the new visa waiver between China and Thailand because it brings more confidence for the Chinese tourists,” he told Al Jazeera. “Now we got 27-28,000 tourists [arriving each day] since the 1st of February, it is almost back to normal before Covid. Last year, at the same time, it was 7-8,000. Last month 500,000 [China visitors arrived].”

Thailand’s government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said on Saturday that four million tourists had arrived in the country from January 1 to February 8, including more than 730,000 Chinese.

Based on Nithee’s approximate figures, Chinese arrivals could reach one million by the end of the month.

“We have promotions with online travel agents, and [we] coordinate with normal travel agents to create a roadshow in the big cities in China. Also, the flights are back to 90 percent [capacity] like before the pandemic because of the visa waiving. We [are trying] to coordinate with influencers and key opinion leaders from China to create the content experience in Thailand,” he added.

More initiatives planned

Phuket, in southern Thailand, has seen an influx of arrivals in recent weeks.

Crowds along the streets in Bangkok, Chinese lanterns have been strung across the road

The island hotspot is expected to welcome 49,000 tourists a day through the international airport during the Chinese New Year period until February 16, according to local media.

The festival falls in the middle of Thailand’s high season, which usually runs from November to March, and is a major holiday for mainland China.

Ranjeet Viswanathan, the director of sales and marketing at the luxury Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort, said occupancy was even higher than many had hoped.

“This year has started with a bang. Every hotel has seen better-than-expected results in January and this continues in February. Our hotel has been doing over 92 percent in occupancy since January 1,” he told Al Jazeera.

Chinese tourists make up about 12 percent of the resort’s business and the number of travellers in 2024 so far is five percent higher than a year ago.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon, which can be a time for new ideas, projects and prosperity.

Chinese visitors have long been crucial to the Thai travel industry, but even with the jump in arrivals, the numbers remain well below 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In that year, Chinese visitors made up more than 11 million of the record 39 million tourists who visited Thailand.

Last year, there were more than 3.5 million Chinese arrivals, but that still fell short of the five million predicted by Thai officials.

Experts put the lower-than-expected numbers down to China’s own economic issues and domestic travel trends. The mass shooting in a Bangkok shopping mall in September that killed one Chinese national, and the release of the Chinese blockbuster movie No More Bets, a film depicting scams in Southeast Asia , may have also played a part.

Chinese tourists taking selfies with Thai PM Srettha Thavisin

But the recent surge of Chinese visitors to Thailand shows China’s outbound travel is recovering, according to Bowerman, the tourism analyst.

“Strong demand for travel to Thailand from China in the first two months of 2024 suggests that this year will be very different for outbound travel from China compared to 2023,” he said.

Thai tourism officials have forecast more than eight million arrivals from China by the end of 2024.

The tourism authority’s Nithee is already working on luring more visitors from China and is in talks to arrange new flight routes from China into Thai cities including Udon Thani in the northeast and Hat Yai in the south. He is optimistic Thailand is on track to meet its arrivals target by the end of the year.

“It is really promising. We have to keep an eye on these situations and get more confidence for tourists and do more promotion,” he added.

A busy road in Bangkok's Chinatown

‘We are ready’: relief and excitement builds in Thailand with Chinese tourists set to return

South-east Asian nations avoid rules targeting China visitors despite Covid risks, and hope the influx will revive battered tourism sectors

A fter almost three years of little to no business, Thai tour guide operator Anchalee Vittayanuntapornkul is more than relieved that Chinese tourists will soon be allowed to travel again. “I’m sure if you ask anyone in the tourism industry, the only nationality that they are waiting to see come back is the Chinese tourists,” says Anchalee, who is based in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand .

On Sunday, China scrapped the requirement for inbound travellers to quarantine , making holidaying abroad much easier. The policy change is expected to boost the tourism sector across the wider region, including south-east Asia, which depended heavily on Chinese travellers before the pandemic.

Anchalee, owner of CM Paradise Tour , has already hired extra Chinese speakers and drivers to take groups on tours of Chiang Mai’s famous Doi Suthep temple, its waterfalls and mountainous landscapes.

When the scrapping of quarantine was announced last month, online travel sites reported immediate spikes in bookings and searches. One platform, Qunar, says it saw a seven-fold increase in flight searches within 15 minutes, with Thailand, Japan and South Korea among the top destinations.

China’s dismantling of its zero-Covid policy , and the surge in cases that followed, which quickly overwhelmed hospitals , has prompted about a dozen countries globally to impose new requirements for travellers from China. The UK, India and the US are among various countries now requiring a Covid test for arrivals from China.

Wat Lok Molee temple in Chiang Mai

‘Everybody needs work’

South-east Asian countries have not introduced rules specifically for Chinese tourists, however. Thailand will, according to reports, require all travellers to provide proof of vaccination or proof of recovery from Covid over the past six months, but the final details have not yet been announced. Neighbouring Malaysia has said it will screen all incoming travellers for fever, with the Malaysian prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, saying that policies will not be “discriminating [against] any countries”.

When some in Malaysia reacted negatively to the news that China was reopening, the country’s tourism minister, Tiong King Sing, advised people to “be cautious with their words” and not to create the impression that the country was unwelcoming, local media reported .

Piyanut Intarachai, who runs a restaurant in Chiang Mai, says screening tourists who arrive is a good idea. “They should check the vaccination cards and even ask for a Covid test. I know it doesn’t give 100% protection, but it is still better than nothing.”

But Piyanut adds that he isn’t worried about Covid. “Covid is everywhere, not only in China . There are still new cases every day here. But with the current strain, it’s milder. Everybody needs work, and income to live their life.”

Before the pandemic, tourists would queue up at Piyanut’s restaurant, Kao Soy Nimman, eager to try his speciality, Khao Soi – a coconut curry noodle soup famous in northern Thailand. The vast majority of his customers were from China, he says. Then Covid hit, and visitors disappeared almost overnight. “It was just empty, all gone, no income.”

Pre-pandemic, China was one of the biggest sources of tourists for countries across the region, and it accounted for about a third of visitors to Thailand.

The Thai authorities are predicting around 5 million Chinese tourists will visit this year – welcome news for the tourism sector, though still less than half the number who arrived in 2019.

Tourism operators hopeful

The lack of requirements targeted at Chinese tourists might make south-east Asia a more welcoming destination for those who do choose to travel, says Hannah Pearson, founding partner of the travel consultancy Pear Anderson.

But she adds that Thailand and neighbouring countries are unlikely to see huge numbers of arrivals, saying: “There just isn’t the air capacity for that.”

Flight capacity for south-east Asia is still a third down on 2019, Pearson says, adding this is likely exacerbated by high fuel costs. “When operational costs are higher, that means that airlines are more reluctant to restore those capacities or those flight frequencies.” If airlines are unsure there will be demand, they don’t want to put on extra flights and risk losing money.

Anchalee, however, is hopeful. Her phone began ringing with enquiries almost as soon as the announcement was made that China would reopen. Already she is booked up until the end of March.

“I believe that Chinese tourists will come back to Thailand even more than before, because they could not go out for three years,” she says. “We are ready. I think the worst and the hardest part of the Covid time has already passed.”

More good news on China tourist front

Tourist income this year to exceed pre-Covid levels

NEWSPAPER SECTION: News

When the Chinese government announced it would allow overseas group tours to resume to 20 countries including Thailand from Feb 6, it brought mixed reactions.

While some welcomed the good news that international tourists would increase, others were wary of the bad news that Covid-19 might spread.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul believes China's new tourism policy  will benefit Thailand's tourism and economy.

He is also confident Thailand will contain the possible spread of Covid-19, said deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul on Saturday.

Mr Anutin said outbound group tours from China will proceed step by step in an initial pilot phase and with strict regulations imposed on both Chinese travellers and tour agencies, said Ms Traisuree.

The government believes any influx of Chinese group tours will not affect the country's Covid-19 controls.

Chinese tour agencies must follow Covid-19 control measures in countries where their customers visit, while Chinese visitors are being warned to get a Covid-19 test before leaving and pay attention to their health safety while travelling overseas, Ms Traisuree said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha last week said he had received good news from the government of China that Thailand will be the first country to receive Chinese tourists in the pilot outbound group tour phase, which he appreciated.

The anticipated return of Chinese visitors to Thailand this year will be different in terms of both quantity and quality, said Tanes Petsuwan, deputy governor for international marketing in Asia and South Pacific of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Tourism income associated with the return of Chinese tourists will also be higher than that recorded in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he said.

At that time, approximately 11 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand for the entire year and 531 billion baht in tourism income was generated, he said.

Those tourists spent 7.8 days on average in Thailand and each spent on average 6,118 baht a day during their stay or approximately 47,723 baht per person per trip, he said.

Now five of TAT's offices in China -- in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Kunming -- are implementing a tourism strategy called " China is Back " starting with a tourism campaign called "Two Lands, One Heart".

The TAT now expects at least 5 million Chinese tourists to visit Thailand this year, he said.

"Thailand has become Chinese tourists' dream destination following the Thai government's favourable reaction to China's reopening," he said.

During Chinese New Year , Thailand expects to welcome about 30,000 Chinese tourists from Jan 19-27, said TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said.

He said international arrivals are expected to number over half a million, a 1,622% increase over the same period of last Chinese New Year.

TAT expected 29,400 mainland Chinese tourists to arrive during this Lunar New Year, with this demographic being the primary target for the holiday period.

"In 2023, the number of Chinese tourists and the income generated from them during Chinese New Year will see a small recovery," said the governor.

Before group tours arrive, some popular tourist destinations including Yaowarat and the Erawan shrine in Bangkok have reported a small number of Chinese visitors from the mainland.

Achan Chen Jiefu, a monk at Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, Bangkok's largest Chinese Buddhist temple, said there are not many mainland Chinese visitors.

He added that during the Lunar New Year, many Chinese might want to celebrate at home. Larger groups of visitors are expected to come around March and April for the Songkran Festival.

Another Chinese tourist attraction, the Erawan Shrine, has not seen the arrival of large numbers of tourists from mainland China, said 51-year-old Chookiat Kaewfa Charoen, the shrine receptionist. But after next month, things should improve.

Thailand's government, seeking return of tourists from China, approves visa-free entry for 5 months

Thailand china tourism.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s new government Wednesday approved a measure granting temporary visa-free entry to Chinese tourists, signaling that the recovery of the country's tourism industry is a top economic priority.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said the visa exemption, which will also apply to visitors from the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan, will be effective from Sept. 25 until Feb. 29 next year. He said the relevant authorities had been consulted to ensure they are ready to handle the expected surge in travelers.

China more than a decade ago became a major source of tourists to Thailand, with almost 11 million visitors in 2019, accounting for 27.6% of all arrivals the year before the coronavirus pandemic devastated the tourist market.

The government proposed the measure due to concerns that the number of Chinese tourists this year might not reach the initial target of 5 million due to strict visa requirements. The Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that around 1.4 million Chinese tourists came in the first six months of this year.

Thailand’s economy slumped during the pandemic as its huge tourism industry virtually collapsed. The country received about 40 million international visitors in 2019 who the government estimated generated 1.9 trillion baht ($53.2 billion) in revenue, an amount that plummeted by more than 99% by 2021, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Chai Wacharonke, a spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, said Thailand received 15 million international visitors in the first seven months of this year. He said the government aims to draw 28 million international visitors and generate 1.4 trillion baht ($39.2 billion) in tourism revenue in 2023.

Chai praised the visa exemption scheme, saying the tourism industry is “the only economic machine remaining that can be driven with hope to generate new income quickly for Thailand.”

Besides the visa exemption, other measures the Cabinet approved included a reduction in electricity fees and diesel prices, as well as a three-year debt relief program for farmers, to address the higher cost of living and other economic woes.

BANGKOK (AP) — Three Cabinet ministers welcomed Chinese tourists with flowers and gifts as they arrived Monday at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after China relaxed travel restrictions.

The high-profile event reflected the importance Thailand places on wooing back Chinese travelers to help restore its pandemic-battered tourism industry — before COVID-19 struck, they comprised about one-third of all arrivals.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the ministers of transport and tourism were among those applauding as 269 passengers on Xiamen Airlines Flight MF833 from Xiamen in southeastern China entered the terminal. It was one of the first flights arriving in Thailand since Beijing eased its coronavirus-related travel restrictions as of Sunday.

The travelers received garlands and small gift bags, and were greeted by a big banner saying “China and Thailand are one family, Amazing Thailand always warmly welcomes our Chinese family.”

“I’m feeling good,” said Simon Zou from Tianjin in northeastern China. “I can feel the hospitality of Thai people. We were given some small gifts. I feel very happy.”

Asked what he plans to do in Thailand, he replied: “Eat! Have fun! And experience Thailand’s culture.”

“The number of tourists from China and other parts of the world traveling to Thailand tends to increase continuously,” Anutin told reporters at the airport. “This is a good sign for the Thai tourism sector, which generates income, adds value to the economy, creates jobs and opportunities for people.″

The arrival was heralded by Thai authorities as a symbolic step towards restoring the country’s lucrative tourism sector. But it also exposed how tricky it is for tourist-hungry nations to navigate the coronavirus issue.

As the Chinese tourists arrived, Anutin announced at the airport that visitors would not be required to show COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

Just two days earlier, the Transport Ministry had issued a detailed list of revised requirements for visitors from abroad, including the need to show proof of vaccinations.

The announcement by the transport authorities itself was a sudden turnaround from what had been Thailand’s policy since October, when it dropped nearly all pandemic-related requirements for visitors from abroad.

Anutin said the only requirement retained from the Transport Ministry’s revised rules was that proof of insurance is needed for visitors coming from countries that require coronavirus tests before they return home. That condition would apply mostly, if not exclusively, to China.

On Sunday, Beijing lifted a mandatory quarantine for arrivals from abroad imposed when the pandemic began three years ago. The move is expected to unleash large pent-up demand for outbound travel.

But so far few flights have been restored. On Monday, a check of arrivals at regional airports found only a handful of flights coming from China. The largest share were traveling to South Korea.

A resurgence of infections in China and the relaxed rules led the United States and some countries in Europe and East Asia to tighten rules for travelers from China, raising accusations of discrimination from Beijing. Taking pains not to offend China, Thai officials have emphasized that Thai rules apply to all countries.

Other countries in Southeast Asia also normally host large numbers of tourists from China, though not on Thailand’s scale. Most abolished entry requirements and have stuck with that policy, publicly declaring there was no need to single out visitors from China for new restrictions. Malaysia and Indonesia said they were screening incoming travelers for fever, a common, non-intrusive procedure.

Wang Zhiying from Beijing, one of Monday’s arrivals in Bangkok, said she used to travel to Thailand every year but had not since the pandemic broke out.

She said she believed that other countries’ COVID-19 policies “are quite strict.”

“If they only do this to Chinese people, it would make us uncomfortable. Thailand is friendly and the landing visa is available so we chose Thailand as our first overseas destination when we can go abroad,” said Wang, whose family planned to head south to a seaside resort after a few days in Bangkok.

In 2019, before the pandemic, around 11 million Chinese visited Thailand each year and tourism industry-related revenue accounted for about a fifth of the country’s GDP, Tanes Petsuwan, deputy governor for International Marketing in Asia and the South Pacific for the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Last year, 10 million visitors were expected, but 11.8 million actually came, mostly after restrictions were lifted in October.

“The TAT earlier projected there will be around 20 million international visitors this year, but it has adjusted that to 25 million thanks to the Chinese,” Tanes said.

He said he expects arrivals to reach or surpass pre-pandemic levels in the next two to three years, possibly reaching 40 million by 2025.

BANGKOK: When Thailand’s tourism chief revealed a plan to engage Chinese police in joint patrols at major tourist destinations, it was a sign that the Southeast Asian nation was desperate to to draw more visitors from China.

It would reflect the kingdom’s commitment to strengthen security and boost confidence among Chinese tourists, announced Ms Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) after a meeting with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin last Sunday (Nov 12).

The plan was swiftly scuppered  – Mr Srettha and the national police chief denied it the following day after public outcry that it would compromise Thailand’s sovereignty.

Still, it is a clear sign that the Srettha administration knows restoring tourist confidence is pivotal. Perceived safety concerns sparked by a fatal shooting and a blockbuster crime thriller are keeping Chinese holidaymakers away, analysts say.

Slow economic recovery in China and limited flights to Thailand are also compounding matters, they pointed out, making it difficult for the Thai government to hit its tourism target this year.

Thailand hopes to draw 28 million foreign tourists, including 4.4 million from China, by the end of the year.

As of Nov 12, however, only 2.9 million Chinese tourists have visited, according to data from Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This means the government needs to attract 1.5 million more Chinese visitors to reach its target.

“As we are entering the high season, there is a possibility but it will be hard,” Mr Paul Pruangkarn from the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) told CNA.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, China was Thailand's biggest source of international visitors, accounting for more than one in four of them. Out of 40 million foreign visitors in 2019, more than 11 million were from China.

"it’s too unsafe".

One of the reasons they have been slow to return is the shooting  in Bangkok’s luxury Siam Paragon mall last month. A Chinese national was one of two foreigners killed by a 14-year-old gunman, who also injured several people.

The woman had entered Thailand through its  tourist visa exemption scheme  launched for Chinese passport holders on Sept 25.

Following the shooting, the tourism ministry recorded a contraction of arrivals from China for four consecutive weeks before numbers started to pick up this month.

The immediate hit to Chinese sentiment was reflected in a poll on one of China’s largest social media platforms, Weibo, asking users if the incident would affect their travel plans to Thailand.

Over half of roughly 25,500 respondents, or about 14,400, answered: “Yes, it’s too unsafe.”

Some 3,500 others replied it would not affect their plan as such incidents do not happen often. Around 7,400 users said travelling within China is good enough, with some commenting it would be safest.

“Usually, incidents like these will have an impact that lasts two to three months, where we’ll see a drop in tourist numbers,” economist Ratasak Piriyanont from Kasikorn Securities told CNA.

Thailand’s tourism authority estimates a total income of 2.17 trillion baht (US$61 billion) from 28 million foreign visitors by December, with the visa-free incentive as an important driving force.

It also forecast the scheme would attract about 2.9 million tourists from China within five months. But  a month and a half into the programme, data from the tourism ministry showed Chinese arrivals had not even reached 500,000.

Perceived safety concerns are among the key factors that could jeopardise the recovery of the Chinese market, said Mr Pruangkarn from PATA, even as a seamless travel experience can make Thailand a more attractive destination.

Who benefits from Thailand’s new tourism schemes

  • Passport holders from China and Kazakhstan can enter and stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa between Sep 25, 2023 and Feb 29, 2024
  • Passport holders from India and Taiwan can do the same from Nov 10, 2023 to May 10, 2024
  • Russian passport holders can enter and stay in Thailand for 90 days without a visa – instead of the normal 30-day period – from Nov 1, 2023 to Apr 30, 2024

A CRIME MOVIE THAT HURTS THAI TOURISM

Besides the gun attack last month, a Chinese blockbuster released in early August has also cast a shadow over Thailand’s tourism outlook, analysts said.

The crime thriller, No More Bets, tells a story of human trafficking victims lured from China to an unnamed country, where they are locked up in a scam mill, tortured and forced to swindle people online.

Online scam operations in Southeast Asia

  • Hundreds of thousands of people from the region and beyond have been forcibly engaged in online crimes, according to the UN Human Rights Office
  • An estimated 120,000 people across Myanmar are believed to be forcibly involved in online scams, along with some 100,000 others in Cambodia
  • Victims of trafficking come from China, parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia as well as Africa
  • Thailand is increasingly a transit country for these operations

Chinese viewership for the film exceeded 90 million as of late-September, according to film data platform Beacon, while revenue was at around 3.8 billion yuan (US$525 million).

Following the movie’s release, Thailand saw a drop in Chinese tourists. From 410,311 visitors in July, the figure dipped to 355,146 in August and 284,989 in September.

“Chinese people feel scared. They’re afraid of human trafficking and worried they wouldn’t be safe if they travel here,” said Mr Ratasak.

During his official visit to China last month, Mr Srettha had a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and emphasised his government's commitment to ensure foreign tourists' safety following the Siam Paragon shooting incident.

The two leaders also discussed intensifying efforts to crack down on cross-border crimes such as wire fraud and online gambling.

LIMITED FLIGHTS, DOMESTIC FACTORS

Domestic factors have also hampered the return of Chinese tourists to Thailand.

Analysts say sluggishness in the world’s second-largest economy has reduced people’s spending power, especially those outside big Chinese cities. China's second-quarter gross domestic product growth of 6.3 per cent on-year was below expectations. But its third-quarter growth of 4.9 per cent year-on-year exceeded forecasts.

Meanwhile, limited international flights have affected outbound travel. “The frequency of flights from China to Thailand is still below pre-COVID numbers,” explained Mr Pruangkarn.

Online flight data provider OAG reported that out of China’s top 20 international markets since 2019, Thailand is the least recovered this month.

“Seats are still 57 per cent below 2019, despite the recent visa relaxation for Chinese visitors to Thailand,” it said on its website.

Still, market observers believe the Thai tourism sector could rebound in the near to medium term, given the right conditions and strategies.

“Thailand can boost Chinese arrivals by promoting Thailand as a safe destination that offers a variety of activities for all types of travellers, and by working with the airlines to increase flights from China,” said Mr Pruangkarn.

Chinese get visa-free entry to Thailand

china tourist to thailand

Thailand has waived visa requirements for travelers from China for the next five months, as the country tries to revitalize its tourism industry, particularly in terms of the Chinese market, which has been slow to recover after the pandemic.

On Wednesday, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's new government announced the country will start a five-month visa waiver program for China and Kazakhstan from Sept 25 until Feb 29, 2024. The program aims to attract 30 percent more travelers and generate more revenue for the country.

The news has gone down well in China, with travel platforms inundated with searches and inquiries.

Searches for tour products on Trip.com Group's travel platform surged by 800 percent within 30 minutes of the news being announced. Qunar, another travel portal, said searches for flight tickets to Thailand increased by 70 percent compared with the same time last week, and searches for the country's hotels doubled.

"The program hit the spot, as the time period covers two major long holidays for Chinese people — the eight-day Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday in early October, and the Spring Festival holiday in late January. The visa waiver program will strongly stimulate Chinese people to travel to Thailand in the next five months," said Xu Xiaolei, chief brand officer of CYTS Tours in Beijing.

He said a visa policy is usually the most effective and convenient tool to attract travelers and boost consumption. "Some countries and regions have been trapped in 'black swan' accidents in recent months and the coming visa waiver program will help restore Chinese travelers' confidence in Thailand's tourism."

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the visa waiver program is estimated to add 700,000 new arrivals.

Statistics from TAT show that Thailand was visited by about 3 percent of all outbound tourists from the Chinese mainland, representing the largest share among foreign destinations. In the first quarter of this year, Chinese travelers were in the top five groups of foreign arrivals, along with Malaysian, Russian, South Korean and Indian visitors.

The Thai government expects the number of Chinese visitors to meet the target of 5 million this year, with spending of 446 billion baht ($13.2 billion). The target is less than half of the Chinese visits in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. About 350,000 to 400,000 Chinese tourists have visited Thailand per month so far this year, with the tally by August reaching 2.1 million, according to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

One of the major factors that stopped Chinese tourists from traveling to Thailand is safety concerns, said Varut Kanchanapattana, board member and honorary treasurer of the Association of Thai Travel Agents.

"The visa-free scheme will definitely be a booster to tourism in Thailand and also the country's economy. But it still won't have maximum benefit if a negative perception about Thailand remains among Chinese," he said.

Thailand has become popular among Chinese travelers in the past decades, and was among the first countries that welcomed Chinese tour groups after China optimized its COVID-19 control measures around February.

Trip.com Group said the upcoming National Day holiday from Sept 29 to Oct 6 will see a peak in outbound tourism, and Thailand is among the top three choices for its users.

Fan Dongxiao, who is in charge of travel firm Tuniu's short-distance overseas trips, said more Chinese people from second or third-tier cities will choose to visit Thailand after the visa-free policy decision.

"We've already seen a jump in bookings for tour products for the coming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, and the implementation of the visa waiver policy will further increase people's desire to visit Thailand," she said.

In another development, Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili announced on Monday that the country by the Caucasus and the Black Sea has decided to introduce visa-free entry for Chinese citizens, and more details will be declared later.

"China is the second-largest economy in the world. One of our main interests is to strengthen trade and economic relations with China, to attract more investments from China, as well as to attract more tourists," Gharibashvili said at a governmental session in Tbilisi.

Chinese tourists are considered one of the most desirable tourists in the world, said the prime minister.

Thailand looks to woo 8m Chinese tourists

china tourist to thailand

Thailand's tourism industry has started looking up. With consumer spending at this year's traditional Loy Krathong Festival expected to hit an eight-year high, the country's tourism authority has announced that it aims to attract more than 8 million Chinese tourists next year.

At a news conference on Tuesday, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, or TAT, said it would continue to promote the country as one of the world's most popular travel destinations, and aims to attract more foreign tourists, especially from China.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool revealed that the authority is confident the total foreign arrivals this year will exceed its target of 25 million people.

Although the tourism authority had lowered its expectations of Chinese tourist arrivals from the previous 5 to 7 million to about 3.4 million this year, the authority estimated that Chinese arrivals next year will rise to more than 8 million due to an increase in the number of flights and better economic conditions.

"Thailand is well-known for its diversified tourism experiences and great services. And we will strengthen efforts to ensure the safety of tourists to further attract foreign visitors, especially from China," Thapanee said, adding that Chinese tourists may help to generate 452 billion baht ($13 billion) in tourist receipts next year.

For the past few days, people from all over Thailand have been taking part in the Loy Krathong Festival to celebrate the full moon. Residents and tourists gathered in the evening at lakes, rivers, canals, and beaches to pay their respects to the river goddess by floating krathongs — banana leaf "rafts" decorated with flowers, incense and candles.

Top destinations

The spending for this year's Loy Krathong Festival is estimated to increase by 3.3 percent from the previous year to 10 billion baht, according to a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Although Thailand faces intense competition from other countries that have also offered visa exemptions to Chinese travelers, Thapanee said the country is still among the top destinations for tourists from the Chinese mainland.

China was Thailand's biggest source of international visitors before the COVID-19 pandemic, accounting for nearly 11 million arrivals in 2019, according to official statistics.

This year, however, Malaysians contributed the most to total foreign arrivals at 3.66 million people so far, followed by Chinese (3.03 million), South Koreans (1.43 million), Indians (1.4 million) and Russians (1.24 million).

In a bid to attract more visitors, the Thai government announced a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for Chinese and Kazakh nationals. It started on Sept 25 and is scheduled to expire on Feb 29 next year.

Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT's deputy governor for international marketing in Asia and South Pacific, said in a recent interview with Bangkok Post newspaper that the authority is planning a media trip to invite more than 100 Chinese key opinion leaders to explore new activities and destinations in Thailand, along with testing safety measures for tourists.

How to Choose Cities to Visit in Thailand and China

For first-time visitors to Thailand, a classic route including Bangkok and Chiang Mai paired with an island visit remains the most popular choice.

For island getaways, Phuket stands out with its lively atmosphere and various choices of water sports, making it particularly appealing for families.

For couples seeking an anniversary or honeymoon celebration, Koh Samui offers a quieter, more romantic vibe, along with high-end resort experiences.

If you are looking for off-the-beaten-path destinations with unique experiences such as jungle hiking, floating houses, or treehouse stays, you might consider Khao Sok National Park or Kanchanaburi.

If you are a history enthusiast intrigued by Thailand's history and ancient ruins, you could consider Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.

Given China's vastness, exploring all its cities in a single trip can be challenging. However, certain gateway cities encapsulate the essence of China's culture and history, making them ideal for first-time visitors—Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an.

Beyond history and culture, China's breathtaking natural landscapes are worth exploring. Time permitting, consider visiting scenic cities like Zhangjiajie (renowned for towering peaks), Guilin (known for its relaxing countryside vibe and scenery), or Huangshan (famous for mountain views).

If you are seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations, you might consider Tibet (offering Tibetan culture and plateau scenery), the Silk Road (featuring deserts and ancient caves), and Yunnan (good for ancient towns and relaxed, unhurried atmosphere).

How Many Days Are Needed?

For your first trip to China and Thailand, an itinerary of about 2 weeks is appropriate , spending 1 week in China and 1 week in Thailand.

This length of time allows for a relaxed travel pace and ensures a relatively rich experience, including experiences such as hiking on the Great Wall and a cooking class in Thailand.

It could include must-see cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai in China, and Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and some beach time in Thailand.

Both China and Thailand are well worth visiting in depth. If you have a longer vacation of 3 or 4 weeks, you could spend one or two more weeks exploring areas with more ethnic or local characteristics, such as Tibet in China or the rainforest parks in Thailand.

Best Times to Visit China and Thailand

The best times to visit China and Thailand are October, November, and March when the two countries have less rain and ideal temperatures. The Yi Peng Festival in Thailand in November could be an event you want to include.

If you don't care too much about the cold wintry weather in China — it's around -5–10°C (23–50°F) in Beijing — then December, January, and February are also good times to travel , as Thailand has fantastic weather in these months.

September could also be an option when China is at its best weatherwise. Thailand would have afternoon showers, but the impact wouldn't be very big.

The summer vacation (June to August) coincides with the hot and rainy season in China and Thailand (Koh Samui and nearby islands will be sunny). Often this means heavy afternoon/evening showers, which have little impact on the touring experience. Sometimes, beach activities may be affected due to rough seas, but there are still many indoor activities available, such as visiting vibrant markets, taking cooking classes, etc.

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): The first tourist train running from Guiyang in Southwest China’s Guizhou province to the Lao capital of Vientiane will make its inaugural journey on May 8, the Chinese city said on its website.

The planned debut marks an important step in boosting tourist and cultural exchanges between China and Southeast Asia.

Equipped with amenities including shower rooms, mobile charging facilities, entertainment services such as karaoke, cafés and bars, the train aims to impress passengers with a luxurious travel experience.

People travelling from Guizhou can book tickets for this eight-day trip through local travel agencies or online platforms.

The train stops at several notable attractions in Laos including Vientiane, the country’s biggest city; Vangvieng, a paradise for outdoor activities; Luang Prabang, the world heritage site renowned for its cultural heritage; and the popular Kuangxi Waterfall.

Meanwhile, new travel routes within Guizhou will also be launched to enable tourists from across Southeast Asian to explore the attractions in the Chinese province.

The train is expected to run on a regular monthly schedule, with extra trains added based on passenger flow.

Earlier, China’s Yunnan province and the capital Beijing began operating trains connecting to the Laos-China Railway terminating in Laos.

The new rail route has made a significant contribution to boosting people-to-people links in the sub-region.

According to official data, some 150,000 people of 87 nationalities have crossed the border since the Laos-China Railway began running cross-border trains a year ago in April 2023.

The number of tourists visiting Laos from China has increased significantly compared to the years before the Laos-China Railway became operational in 2021.

In 2022, some 45,000 Chinese tourists came to Laos, soaring to 641,314 in 2023, and in the first three months of this year 242,193 Chinese tourists spent time in Laos. - Vientiane Times/ANN

China to resume Taiwan-bound travel for Fujian Province residents

KYODO NEWS

China said it will resume Taiwan-bound travel for residents of Fujian Province in the country's southeast during a meeting on Sunday with the island's opposition lawmakers.

Rao Quan, China's vice culture and tourism minister, made the remarks to Nationalist Party legislators when they met ahead of the May 20 inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing views as a separatist.

The vice minister said Beijing will first restart the travel of Fujian residents to Matsu, a remote group of Taiwan islands, and then allow group tours to other parts of the self-ruled territory after resuming ferry services between Pingtan County of Fujian and Taiwan.

He also told the group led by veteran opposition lawmaker Fu Kun-chi that Beijing welcomes Taiwan compatriots to visit the mainland for sightseeing and to see the development and changes there, according to the Chinese ministry.

The mainland has banned individual Chinese tourists, including Fujian residents, from traveling to Taiwan since August 2019 amid a deterioration of cross-strait ties under the rule of the island's government led by the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party starting in 2016.

China's General Administration of Customs also said Sunday it will approve the import of pomelo and other agriculture and fishery products from Taiwan, given that they meet the mainland's quarantine requirements, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The decision came as Zhao Zenglian, deputy chief of the customs authority, met with the 17-member delegation of the Taiwan opposition party, also known as Kuomintang (KMT).

Fu expressed hope that products from all industries in Taiwan, especially high-quality agriculture and fishery products, can be successfully marketed to the mainland, Xinhua added.

Beijing, which views Taiwan as part of its territory, has treated the KMT favorably while rejecting talks with the DPP government and denouncing Lai as an independence advocate. In the island's parliament, the opposition party now has the largest number of seats.

On Saturday, the legislators held talks with Wang Huning, who is ranked No. 4 in the ruling Chinese Communist Party's top leadership. In early April, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou of the KMT in Beijing.

Communist-led China and Taiwan have been governed separately since they split in 1949 due to a civil war, with the then-ruling KMT government retreating to Taiwan.
