An immersion in modernity, enigmatic forms, the interpretation of a dream, a Mediterranean marvel, a place of innovation and new concepts, this structure is a place for reflecting on the capabilities of art and design.  Casa Batlló is all this and more. It is no surprise that UNESCO declared Casa Batlló a World Heritage site in 2005.

Next, we will take you to the sea. Here you will see firsthand the intense infrastructural changes the city underwent in organising and facilitating the Olympic Games in 1992.   You will drive by the Arc of the Triomf, Ciutadella Park, the Olympic Village, and the Olympic Port. These are all beautiful and fascinating sites that are packed with historical significance.   Included in this drive is also the fisherman’s quarter, called Barceloneta. This charming neighborhood is nestled next to the sea and has its own unique vibe.

This visit continues with a drive up Montjuic Mountain, where we will make a short stop in Olympic Stadium Lluis Companys.   The climb continues up to Montjuic Castle, where you will enjoy a cable car ride offering panoramic views of the city.    The bus will pick you up at the last station and we will continue our Montjuic visit passing by the sports facilities built for the 1992 Olympic Games: the Lluis Companys stadium, the Palau Sant Jordi, the Olympic swimming pool Picornell until we get to the Spanish Village.   We will visit this charming place where you will admire a collection of traditional buildings from all over Spain and a demonstration of the handcrafts made in this country.   After the visit to the Spanish village, we have completed the tour of Montjuic Mountain; it is time to head over to the city center.    As in all travels through Barcelona, the drive back to the city center provides stunning views of landmarks and architecture. Admire the Venetian Towers, the Montjuic fountains, the MNAC, and the CC, “Las Arenas” rebuilt over the ancient “Plaza de Toros” (bullrings).   Our destination is Plaza de Cataluña, the starting point of the guided walking tour of the old city center.   An experienced professional guide will take you to the Ramblas, Cathedral Square, through the narrow street of the Gothic quarter, and to Plaza Sant Jaume where the City Hall is located as well as the headquarters of the Catalonian government.

The Benedict Sanctuary of Montserrat was founded in 1025 and provides a mystical backdrop for the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, who is enshrined in the monastery’s Royal Basilica.

The little monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who spread the word of the miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin. Word of mouth led to more and more pilgrims visiting Montserrat.

Today, Montserrat has been modernized to continue attending to the needs of pilgrims, one thousand years after it was originally founded.

General Tips, Recommendations, and Advice

While Barcelona has a warm, balmy climate it is still adjacent to the sea, which means weather can sometimes be unpredictable. When it does rain, it rains in full tropical style. Although it is unlikely, we recommend having a layer or two just in case. If it is the summer, you have much less to worry about.

If you are doing a tour that includes Montserrat Mountain, definitely bring layers regardless of the season. The weather on the mountain tends to change swiftly.

Wear sunscreen! The sun in Barcelona is strong. Even if you are enjoying a lovely sea breeze, the sun can still burn your skin. It is best to be cautious and not battle a painful sunburn!

Beautiful Barcelona

Wear comfortable shoes. Barcelona is an old city full of charming cobblestone streets and lovely historic districts. Comfortable shoes are essential for the walking tours offered on this list. On the Montserrat tour, you will be walking on a mountain. Sneakers are a great choice.

Make a “must-see” list for your trip. This list will help you navigate our article, as many tours are offered and it can be hard to narrow down which ones you are most interested in.

In addition to your “must-see” list, try to have an open mind for tours and landmarks that weren’t on your radar. Sometimes the most memorable experiences happen out of spontaneity and an open mind.

Did you know?

One fun fact about Barcelona City Tours is that they often include visits to the “Superblocks.” These are innovative urban planning projects aimed at creating pedestrian-friendly zones within the city. In these areas, several city blocks are interconnected, and traffic is restricted to the perimeter, making the interior streets car-free or significantly reduced in traffic. Superblocks are designed to prioritize the well-being of residents and visitors by providing green spaces, playgrounds, outdoor seating, and cultural activities in the heart of the city. They promote a sense of community, reduce pollution, and contribute to a more sustainable and enjoyable urban environment. Exploring these Superblocks on a city tour allows you to witness Barcelona’s commitment to innovative urban planning and sustainability while enjoying a unique urban experience within the bustling city. It’s a testament to Barcelona’s progressive approach to urban design and livability.

Best Barcelona Guided Tours FAQ

The best time to take a tour of Barcelona is a matter of personal taste. Just keep in mind that Barcelona is a year-round destination. If you love warm weather and want to enjoy the beaches, the summer months are ideal.

However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, aim to visit during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). The weather is still pleasant, and you can explore the city without the summer hustle and bustle.

Barcelona’s must-see attractions include the iconic Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló . Their breathtaking architecture devised by Antoni Gaudí are the most characteristic spots in the city.

You can also take a leisurely stroll down La Rambla or visit the nearby Gothic Quarter is a must-visit to immerse yourself in the city’s history. And of course, don’t miss out on the beautiful Barcelona beaches, where you can relax and soak in the Mediterranean sun.

It’s essential to select the Barcelona tour that aligns with your interests and preferences. First, determine what aspects of Barcelona intrigue you the most. Are you interested in architecture, art, history, food, or a combination of these?

Look for tours that focus on those specific aspects. Reading reviews and testimonials from previous participants can also give you valuable insights into the quality and experience of the tour. And of course, the list above on my blog is a good start!

It is highly recommended to book your Barcelona tours online in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Some popular tours and attractions may have limited spaces, and booking ahead guarantees your spot.

Additionally, certain guided tours offer skip-the-line access to popular attractions, helping you bypass long queues and make the most of your time in Barcelona.

Booking in advance also gives you the opportunity to plan your itinerary better, ensuring you have enough time to explore all the must-see sights.

Most Barcelona tours last around 3-4 hours, so you should budget about half your day. However, there are a number of full day tours that involve visits to more than one destination, or trips outside the city to Montserrat, the Costa Brava, or local wine regions.

The popular Bus Turistic is available in 24 or 48 hour packages, which give you access to an open top double-decker bus that will transport you between 30+ stops throughout the city.

The best Barcelona tour is entirely subjective based on your personal preferences. If you’re looking for a complete overview of the city, the Barcelona hop on hop off bus allows you to take a self-guided tour of Barcelona via its 30+ stops in 24 or 48 hour increments.

Otherwise, the Park Güell & Sagrada Família packaged tour provides entrance and guided tours through Barcelona’s top two attractions. And the Barcelona Tapas & Wine Experience gives you a taste of La dolce vita, Catalan-style .

  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

  • In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
  • Catalan cuisine, which can be found in Barcelona, is markedly different from food in other parts of Spain. Nearly every restaurant will offer pa amb tomàquet —toasted bread with tomato and olive oil. Fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes, cheeses, and locally grown vegetables, such as mushrooms, are culinary mainstays.
  • Spain operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

  • Spain is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.

This popular European city is the latest to increase its tourist tax to battle overtourism

city tours in barcelona

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its city-wide tourist tax, a slight increase of €0.50 (about $0.53) per night, as the city seeks to curb overtourism.

The new price of €3.25 (about $3.45) was implemented on April 1 as part of the Stays in Tourist Establishments Tax . The bylaw was introduced in 2021, when the tourist tax was €0.75 (around $0.80) per night, and gradually increased the tax each year through 2024. Now, if someone is staying in Barcelona for seven nights, the new total tax amount will be €22.75 (around $24).

“It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city,” deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said in March, according to Euronews .

The tax is added to a tourist’s accommodations bill when they stay at official tourist establishments in the city. The money goes toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure, such as improving roads.

Other popular European destinations, such as Amsterdam and Venice, also recently increased tourist taxes for similar reasons.

Are tourist taxes the future of travel? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

“The new and increasing tourist fees across Europe allow cities to fund measures to attract more vacationers, support the local infrastructure and businesses, as well as preventing damages from overtourism,” Tiffany Mealiff, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone , said in a statement to USA TODAY.

However, Barcelona visitors have had to pay a regional tourist tax since 2012, according to Euronews . This tax amount depends on a traveler’s accommodation type, costing more if someone is staying at a luxury hotel than an Airbnb.

Barcelona continues to reign as Spain’s most popular tourist destination. In 2022, Barcelona welcomed 9.7 million tourists , just slightly below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Barcelona City Council. However, tourists were found to be staying in the city longer than in 2019.

In 2022, the city also sought to cap the number of people in a tour group and ban megaphones by tour guides in an effort to curb the disruptive effects of overtourism.

Travelers planning their European getaway should be mindful of the additional costs that “are often not obvious beforehand,” according to Mealiff, as they plan their trip budgets.

Charli XCX Plots 2024 International ‘BRAT' Tour Dates

Charli XCX announced the international dates for her 2024 Brat tour on Monday (March 25), which will be a mix of live concerts and what she's dubbed "partygirl" events. The run will kick off with a set at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 1, followed by shows in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico City before winding down on June 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Just hours after announcing the dates, the singer noted on Instagram that all the shows were already sold out .

At press time Charli had not yet announced the release date for BRAT , her sixth full-length album, though she did recently reveal that it is out this summer, contains 15 songs and is 41:23 long. The follow-up to her 2022 album Crash has been advanced by the uptempo first single, "Von Dutch."

Speaking to Billboard at this year's 2024 Women in Music event, Charli said that BRAT is a club record meant to evoke the illegal London rave scene of the early 2000s where she started performing as a 14 and 15-year-old, produced from a tight collection of sounds to create "this unique minimalism that is very loud and bold."

She also said that the album is "very direct" eschewing "metaphor and flowery lyricism" for language that is closer to the way she talks to her friends in text messages. "This record is all the things I would talk about with my friends, said exactly how I would say them. It's in ways very aggressive and confrontational, but also very conversational and personal," she said. "And not in that boring way where artists are like, ‘This is my most personal record.' To me, it feels like listening to a conversation with a friend.

See the Brat tour announcement and dates below.

BRAT tour dates :

June 1 - Barcelona, Spain @ Primavera Sound Barcelona

June 7 - London, England @ Here at Outernet

June 11 - Queens, NY @ Knockdown Center

June 12 - Chicago, IL @ Radius

June 15 - Los Angeles, CA @ Shrine Expo Hall
