Jeep Safari, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The bumpy trails of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary – the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala – are best enjoyed on a thrill-evoking jeep safari. The two-hour expedition through the lush jungle in the company of an expert guide and driver will give you the best and safest opportunity to cherish the spectacles of the wild, up-close like never before.

The therapeutic tranquillity of the jungle will take you away from the hustle-bustle of mundane life, and give you adrenaline-powered euphoria. If you are lucky, you will spot one of the big cats – the top predator in these forests.

Throughout the safari, you will experience the soothing serenity of the wilderness which is only occasionally disturbed by the rumble of herds of elephants or gaurs, frequently spotted on the trail. Riding through the opulent jungle trail, with the fresh forest air caressing your face, and keeping an eye open to spot a wild tiger will certainly be an unforgettable adventure for you.

Timings and Tariff of Jeep Safari in Wayanad The forest department has arranged safaris in the morning (7 AM-10 AM) and evening (3 PM-5 PM) when animal activity in the tourism zone of the sanctuary is relatively high. It is important to note that only a limited number of vehicles are allowed entry into the sanctuary (40 in the morning and 20 in the evening). For more details, click here

Watch wildlife at night on KSRTC’s jungle safari bus

 alt=

Kalpetta: As part of its latest budget tourism initiative, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced a ‘Wildlife night jungle safari’ through the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. The safari bus will be operated from the Bathery depot of the KSRTC and the authorities are planning to start the service from next week.

As per the schedule, the safari bus will leave Bathery depot at 9 pm and take travellers along Vadakkanad and Kapippooru-Moolankavu inside the wildlife sanctuary to Muthanga. From Muthanga, the bus will travel to Irulam and return to Bathery depot by 11.30 pm. “This is the safest route through the forest which offers a chance to watch wildlife at close quarters. Moreover, no night travel ban exists along this forest road,” said Joshy John, district transport officer, Wayanad.

Presently, the safari bus is getting final touches at Bathery depot and the ticket fare per person for the night journey would be Rs 90. Initially, the KSRTC will be taking travellers utilizing the sleeper bus facility at Bathery depot for the night jungle safari.

Sleeper bus a big hit The sleeper bus facility was launched for tourists at Bathery depot in August this year and has received very good response. According to official data, KSRTC has earned Rs 1,87,050 from the four sleeper buses so far.

Each bus can accommodate 48 persons and two families. The tariff per night for an air-conditioned family suite is Rs 890. “Considering the demand, we are planning to arrange more sleeper buses,” said a KSRTC official.

Trip for school students Meanwhile, the budget tourism cell is planning another trip exclusively for school students. During this journey, students from Wayanad would be taken to Thusharagiri, Kozhikode Planetarium and Beypore. The fare will be very low, said the KSRTC official.

Superb JEEP Safari Experience in the early morning. Excellent service by Bipin and Team. Thank you guys for making the trip wonderful.

One of the best experiences ever. Highly skilled drivers and the most courteous service. Travelled with kids and was skeptical post the first glimpse of the broken pathway but after the first few minutes felt really confident. 5/5 overall and a must try if you visit thekkady.

Set on the southwestern Malabar Coast of India, Kerala is a distinctly tropical region, fronted by palm-lined beaches and historic forts, backed by romantic backwaters, high-altitude tea plantations and forested mountains replete with elephants and tigers. Unfortunately its appeal is tempered by a serious shortage of interesting accommodation options.

Kerala, Kerala Image 22

The best time of year to visit the Kerala area is generally considered to be during Dec-Mar.

Kerala is a province of India, located on the southwestern Malabar Coast.

The reputation of this area as a major trading entrepot goes back thousands of years and was even mentioned by the great Greek explorer and writer Pliny around 100AD.

Around 1450 the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in the Indies. They came primarily in search of spices and were delighted to discover that much of the precious cargos that they sought originated along this coast.

During the 1500s the Portuguese took control of the area and established a string fortified ports, the largest of which was Cochin, now the heart of the modern city of Kochi. By the end of that century these first Europeans were ousted by the Dutch East India Company. After considerable periods of local resistance, the British East India Company took control in the 1790s, after which Kerala became a part of the British Raj.

The whole region has a distinctly tropical feel.

Beaches lined by palm trees are backed by a coastal forest laced with an extensive network of lakes, rivers and man-made waterways, surrounded by scenic villages, rice-paddies and palm plantations.

Further inland the ground rises through extensive tea and coffee plantations, to reach the Western Ghats, a range of mountains cloaked in tropical evergreen forests which are renowned for their bio-diversity, with animals including Indian elephants, Bengal tigers and Indian leopards.

Visitors to Kerala are attracted to the historic port of Kochi (Cochin), the tropical beaches of the Kovalam, Neeleshwa and Mararikulam, the scenic Backwaters, the tea plantations, hill stations and inland towns of Munnar, Palakkad, Wayanad and Kothamangalam, the mountain forest areas of Thekkady and Periyar, as well as the remarkable temples of Madurai. Although the state of Kerala has a great deal to offer, an acute shortage of high quality accommodation options really limits its appeal. However, if you are an experienced India traveller and are looking for a new and interesting area to explore, it might be worth considering.

Seasonality

November is the transition period between the end of the monsoon rains and the start of the dry season.

During November the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 30C/86F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures remain up around 23C/73F. Rainfall remains high at around 150mm (6”) per month. Sunshine is around 6 hours per day (around 55% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are often overcast.

Dec-Mar is the main dry season.

During Dec-Mar the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 31C/88F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures hold up around 23C/73F. There should be very little rainfall. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 80% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are usually clear.

Apr-May is the hot season, the often uncomfortable build-up to the main monsoon.

During Apr-May the daytime temperatures can climb steeply to around 34C/91F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures are up around 25C/77F. Rainfall increases to a very significant 175mm (7”) per month. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 85% of daylight hours), indicating that showers tend to be occasional, set against a usually clear sky.

Jun-Oct is the main monsoon season and is generally considered to be the least favourable time to visit

During Jun-Oct the daytime temperatures drop off slightly to around 30C/86F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures remain up at a stifling 23C/75F. Rainfall climbs to a massive 750mm 30”) per month. Sunshine drops to around 5 hours per day (around 40% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are very often heavily overcast.

Getting there

The Kerala area can be accessed in a number of different ways …

The main airport at Kochi (COK) is located around 40km northeast of the city, with regular flights from cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Colombo and the Maldives.

The Kerala region is widely serviced and well connected by train lines, but we rarely recommend their use here. There are no luxury train services.

The Kerala region is rarely accessed by road, but is usually explored by car, in the company of an experienced driver-guide.

Where to stay

The only part of Kerala that contains a decent choice of accommodation options is the city of Kochi, where there are some pleasantly historic lodges inside the historic Fort Cochin.

The coastal and the Backwaters areas contain plenty of places to stay, but precious few which are comfortable or characterful enough to wholeheartedly recommend.

Up in the mountains there is a sprinkling of simple but appealing hills station guesthouses, but there are unfortunately no high quality lodges providing access to the safari areas ...

Most of the trees found in this sanctuary help in making strong furniture. You will find peacocks, jackals, tigers, elephants, civet cats, monkeys, cuckoos(if you are lucky enough), vultures, and even bison. Due to heavy rainfall, this sanctuary remains unusually cold March and April. Therefore, if you wish to visit this wildlife reserve, then you can choose the months of October, November, and February. Iphone web browser choice gets one thing right, two things wrong, say developers.

Avatar for Ben Lovejoy

Being prompted to make an iPhone web browser choice in Europe has seen an uptick in the use of third-party apps , but not everyone is happy about it.

The EU itself is investigating whether Apple’s implementation of the antitrust requirement goes far enough, and developers of third-party browsers say the process gets one thing right, and two things wrong …

iPhone web browser choice

While iPhone owners have been theoretically able to choose their preferred web browser since iOS 14, it wasn’t much of a choice, for a couple of reasons.

First, most people didn’t even know they could choose an alternative browser. The default is Safari, and you’d have to proactively install a third-party one and then manually set it as your default.

Second, Apple insisted that all browsers had to use its own WebKit API. That ensured that competing browsers couldn’t do anything to impact security of privacy, but it also meant that they couldn’t offer faster speeds, or features not available in Safari.

The EU required Apple to drop the WebKit requirement, and also to proactively present users with a choice of browser when they first use their device. These changes were introduced in iOS 17.4 , and only apply within EU countries.

Apple gets one thing right

Developers of third-party web browsers have seen an increase in usage following the implementation of the changes, and they say Apple did play fair in one important respect: browsers are listed in random order, and Safari doesn’t get any special position or prominence in the list.

But two things remain unfair, they say

Wired spoke to a number of developers of alternative iPhone web browsers, and found that they had two criticisms.

First, iPhone owners are not asked to make their choice during the initial iPhone setup process. Instead, they are only presented with the choice when they first open the Safari app. This means that Safari has already presented itself as the default.

“It starts from you clicking Safari,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and cofounder of Vivaldi. “Which, I think all of us agree, that’s the wrong spot.” Tetzchner said he prefers Google’s implementation of its new browser choice screen that guides Android users to select a default while setting up their phone.

Second, users are given zero information about each browser – just a list of names, many of which will be unfamiliar to non-techy users. That reinforces the idea that they should select Safari unless they already know a reason to make a different choice.

“Giving people information about the choice, and also information about what they’re choosing is really, really important,” says Kush Amlani, a global competition and regulatory counsel at Mozilla, which makes the Firefox browser.

A fairer option would be to give each developer a few words to pitch their browser. DuckDuckGo, for example, might have something like “Uses our privacy-first search engine, which doesn’t track you or filter your results.”

We’ll need to wait for the EU’s conclusion to determine what changes might be needed to comply with the law.
