From local Costa Rican cuisine to artisan crafts to traditional customs and celebrations, sustainability is embedded deeply in the culture and traditions of Costa Rica. From cloud forests to cities or volcanos to beaches, no matter your choice, on any visit to Costa Rica you will find yourself immersed in la pura vida, a Spanish phrase that literally means "the pure life". In Costa Rica, pura vida has come to denote a stress-free lifestyle and it is the gift that will stay with you long after you return.

Why is Costa Rica good for all-inclusive vacations?
Costa Rica is a thrilling destination where you'll find a wide variety of things to see and do if you're interested in outdoor adventure. When you spend all day exploring, it's nice to be able to get pampered and relax when it's time to retire for the day, and that's exactly what you’ll enjoy when you book all-inclusive vacations here. You'll find meals provided for you, so you'll always be nourished and ready for the next adventure, whether you're trying a delicious breakfast or capping off the day with a professionally prepared dinner.
What are some of the best spots for all-inclusive vacations in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is packed full of unforgettable destinations, and the hardest part of planning may be deciding where exactly you want to go. If you favour a more laid-back atmosphere, you may want to book your stay in Cahuita . It's famous for the black-sand beaches that make it easy to relax. Of course, a trip to San Jose tends to be much more energetic, with easy access to outdoor adventure and plenty of opportunities to explore local history in the city.
What to expect from an all-inclusive vacation in Costa Rica
During an all-inclusive vacation in Costa Rica, you can expect supreme relaxation among the country's stunning beaches, and you'll find many family-friendly all-inclusive resorts. Golf is also common, so you'll always have plenty to enjoy from an all-inclusive resort here.
What are some benefits when booking an all-inclusive vacation?
When you book an all-inclusive vacation, you'll have the benefit of knowing the cost of the entire trip in advance. This makes it notably easy to keep your 2024 budget in check without having to worry about any surprise costs during your trip, as your activities, food and accommodation will already be taken care of. Plus, an all-inclusive vacation offers the freedom to simply enjoy everything that your booking covers as you see fit whether you want to explore every inch of your resort or simply relax on the beach all day.
Can I book an all-inclusive vacation with airfare and meals?
Airfare and meals are easy to get in conjunction with your all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica, with meals, in particular, being fairly standard. You can check any all-inclusive resort or accommodation page to see exactly what kind of meal plan they have available. Booking your flight alongside the accommodation is easy as well, as Expedia is your one-stop shop for it all. In fact, booking a package deal with an all-inclusive trip including airfare could lead to savings of up to 44%.
Why should I book a Costa Rica all-inclusive vacation that's adults-only?
By booking an adults-only all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica , you can relax among the soft sands and inviting beaches in quiet tranquillity without any children running around or splashing by the pool. Every aspect of the experience is defined by peaceful relaxation except for the parts that are meant to be a bit more upbeat, such as the onsite nightclubs that several adults-only resorts in Costa Rica have.
Can I book all-inclusive packages?
Packages are among the best ways to experience all-inclusive vacations, and they allow you to truly enjoy the benefits of all-inclusivity by booking everything from your experience to your flight in advance. Prices may even get better the closer you get to your travel date, so having flexible travel dates is always useful when booking packages.
Can I book cheap all-inclusive trips?
Yes, cheap vacations that are all-inclusive are easy to find if you sort your search results by price, as that will automatically put the most affordable options at the top of your search results. Remember, the sort-by-price feature is available no matter what other filters you have activated, so you can search for cheap all-inclusive vacations to Mexico and Central America even if you plan on filtering for 4- or 5-star accommodation options. A wide range of options is available, with the cheapest being around CA $820.
What should I look for with 5-star all-inclusive vacations?

Look at Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica , for example, which offers an all-inclusive experience defined by 4 outdoor pools, a sauna, windsurfing and a full-service spa. Bahia del Sol Beach Front Boutique Hotel goes so far as to offer babysitting services in addition to extra beds and a kids' pool.
How can I find the best deals on all-inclusive vacations?
To find the best deals, you'll want to take advantage of Costa Rica's off-season, which typically runs from early summer to mid-December. The summer heat and relatively frequent rains keep package prices relatively low, as availability is much more widespread compared to the busy season.
Can I book an all-inclusive package that's fully refundable?
Yes, some all-inclusive packages are fully refundable, and you can tell which qualify by looking for the green text marking them as such on your search results page. You may also want to filter for this specifically if it's something you'd rather not book without.
Why should I book an all-inclusive package vacation with Expedia?
Booking with Expedia makes it easy to cover multiple aspects of your vacation at once, including flights, accommodation and activities, with potential package discounts available as well. If you're an Expedia Rewards member, you may be entitled to additional savings by earning points on every eligible purchase that can then be put towards discounts on subsequent trips. Visit Tortuguero National Park
A spectacular wilderness of rainforest, beaches and lagoons, Tortuguero National Park is filled with incredible wildlife. We’ll take you through the canals on a river boat to spot caimans, howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, toucans, crocodiles and scores of bird species, plus endangered ocelots, river otters, manatees and six species of sea turtles.
View Arenal Volcano
One of the most active volcanoes in the world, rising to 1,670 metres over the lush rainforest, Arenal Volcano is a magnificent sight. Our Costa Rica vacations will take you up close to the volcano, from guided treks through old lava rocks, to ziplining on the slopes of the volcano.
Indulge in gourmet chocolate from the best cacao beans
Dive into Culture with Trafalgar, as we journey to San Isidro de Heredia, where you’ll meet master chocolatiers, Julio Fernandez and George Soriana. You’ll learn about the history and production of chocolate in their workshop, and sample some of the sweet delicacies made from the world’s best cacao beans.
Have Costa Rican lunch at a traditional working ranch
When you visit Costa Rica with Trafalgar, we’ll meet the people behind the country. Join Don Alberto and Doña Ana Quintana for a traditional Costa Rican lunch at their eco-friendly Hacienda Pozo Azul, a 2000-acre working ranch. You’ll learn about classic Costa Rican cuisine and life on a working farm.
Spot wildlife at Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Take to the sky in Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you’ll join your Local Specialist for a walk through the rainforest along the treetop Sky Walk bridges. The forest is home to a staggering abundance of wildlife, with around 2.5 percent of the world’s species, including jaguar, puma, tapri, coatis, toucans and hummingbirds.
Our top 5 things to do in Costa Rica
From hiking up volcanoes to walking through treetops, our Costa Rica guided holidays take you to the heart of the country in ways you could never imagine.
Museo de Jade
Founded in 1977 by Fidel Castro, the Museo del Jade is an archaeological museum with a massive collection of pre-Columbian items. Located in San José, you can discover the world’s largest collection of American jade, along with ceramics, stone tables and ceremonial heads.
Museum of Costa Rican Art
With more than six thousand pieces of art, the Museum of Costa Rican Art holds one of the world’s largest collections of Latin American art. You’ll find pieces from artists like José Sancho and Max Jiménez, with paintings, sculptures and pieces dating back to the early 19th century.
Museo Nacional de Costa Rica
The National Museum of Costa Rica is set in the Bellavista Fortress, built in 1917 with bullets still lodged in the exterior walls from the country’s civil war. The building became a museum in 1950, and today has an excellent collection of colonial furniture and pre-Columbian artefacts like ceramics and stone tables.
Best museums in Costa Rica
Our Costa Rica tour packages delve deeper into the history and culture of Costa Rica through their wonderful museums.
The tamale is a quintessential Costa Rican dish, made from dough filled with a mix of meat (like chicken or beef), corn flour and broth. The tamales are then wrapped in banana or plantain leaves, and although they are traditionally enjoyed at Christmas, our Local Specialists will show you where to taste tamales all year round.
Gallo Pinto
A beloved dish of rice and beans, Gallo Pinto is the pride of Costa Rica. The name translates as ‘spotted rooster’ and the local saying ‘mas tico que el gallo pinto’ means ‘more Costa Rican than spotted rooster’. It’s usually eaten at breakfast, but can be enjoyed throughout the day.
A classic staple of Costa Rican cuisine, casado is a dish of rice, black beans, salad, plantains and a tortilla, with an optional serving of meat like beef, pork, chicken or fish. The dish comes in many variations with added flavors like corn, eggs and avocado, and you can mix and match as you please.
Best food in Costa Rica
Full of fruits, vegetables, rice and beans, Costa Rican food is fresh and filling, and we’ll show you all the best places to taste the country’s most-loved dishes.
What to pack for Costa Rica
Spanish phrasebook
Learning a few Spanish phrases is highly appreciated and will make it easier to connect with the locals. The first Costa Rican saying to learn is ‘pura vida, mae!’
Waterproof coat
No matter where you go, it can rain at any time in Costa Rica. Pack a waterproof jacket and keep it in your day bag on your daily adventures.
Mosquito repellent
Costa Rica has plenty of mosquitoes, so to avoid any nasty bites from mosquitoes or other insects, bring a strong repellent with DEET (diethyltoluamide) and apply it regularly.
Adaptor plug
In Costa Rica, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 60 Hz.
Reef-safe sunscreen
Protect yourself from the harsh sun with SPF 30 or higher and protect the environment with reef-safe sunscreen. It’s recommended to bring your own, as sunscreen is expensive in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Birdwatching
It was a wonderful experience. It was very well organized from start to finish. The weather was perfect during our visit. The accommodations with breakfast included were great. Most lodges were located close to sightseeing and other tourist facilities. Some of the arranged tours with knowledgeable guides were exceptional. We also had ample free time to spend as we wished. We loved Costa Rica and would like to revisit someday. Well done Tourrader - Thank you!

The Costa Rican Caribbean Adventure
The quality of the tours was great, I particularly like the extra tours that we could pay for, especially the hike up the volcano in Tortuguera to the highest point in the Caribbean (only 100m!). Spending hours touring the waterways of Tortuguera was very tranquil and full of wildlife. The hotels had great personality, Laguna Lodge with the Gaudi like mosaic everywhere and the curvy lines of the walls and some buildings. The rooms were quite basic (no air conditioning) but had lovely leather rocking chairs in the porch. The food was quite basic and very carbohydrate heavy with no real choice but there was a lot of it so no one was going hungry! My favourite part of the trip was the southern Caribbean coast, Puerto Viejo. The hotel was not in the town but a few kms away (Cariblu in Playa Cocles ). it would have been nicer to stay in town but there are TukTuks to take you in for 3000 colones. The beach was a highlight with beautiful sunsets on the trees behind the beach and very colourful sunrises. Cahuita National Park was also a highlight, so much wildlife anbove and below the water. We didn’t get to snorkel as the sea was too rough in November which was disappointing. Over all it was thoroughly enjoyable although I wish I had spent less time on buses as we always had to go to a central point to switch buses instead of going directly to the destination which was not efficient time wise. I would have liked an option to upgrade the hotels too.
Costa Rica Escape
Our tour director and bus driver were excellent. Our hotel in San Jose was excellent and the one in LA Fortuna very good. However the one in Monteverde was not so good. The beds were uncomfortable, there was no air conditioning and no fans. If this hotel was better my rating would have been 5 stars.

What people love about 7 day costa rica tours.
Was strange that there was not a tour guide that stayed with you throughout the tour. Every segment had different people , vehicles, usually crammed together... No pointing out highlights during travel, strictly activities, which were all good except the horseback riding was below average.
This was a great tour. It was well organized. We were disappointed in our stay in Tortuguero though. We even upgraded our lodging to the boula lodge which was a more expensive hotel option. It was dirty, overpriced, and had horrible food. The staff was also not very helpful at all. It wasn’t worth the long transport to go there, and we were overjoyed that we only spent one day there. I’d highly recommend only doing one day in tortuguero and then go to San Jose. We stayed at la puesta del sol in Monteverde, and it was lovely and clean. Highly recommend adding on the bird watching and Don Juan coffee tour here. Also eat at Taco Taco! One of our favorites ever! Then la Regina hotel in la Fortuna was great too with great staff. Consider adding the morning hike for Arenal. Eat at pollo fortuneno. I can’t emphasize enough how bad our time at the lodging at la baula was in tortuguero!! It’s the only reason I’m not giving this 5 stars! Consider adding on some time in guanacaste if you’re doing a longer trip. Overall we felt like this was an adequate amount of time spent to see a lot of Costa Rica.

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Really enjoyed this trip! Tim was the tour leader. I can't say enough great things about him. He took care of us from minute one, even showing up in the early hours of the morning to greet us upon arrival and get us settled into the hotel. He has an incredible amount of knowledge on any topic, is friendly, good humored and organized. The trip itinerary is good, the weather was very nice over the xmas holidays. Hotels are of variable quality, but okay. Just have an open mind. I liked how we ate at a good mix of local and more touristy restaurants. Recommended."

Costa Rica Tour Selection Trips
- Allow at least seven to ten days for a tour that will hit many of the highlights.
- Costa Rica caters to a wide variety of travelers, including couples, singles, and families. Whether you’re looking for hard or soft adventure, Stride can help you find the best Costa Rica tours.
- If you have a special interest -- birding or fishing, for instance -- look for tours that emphasize those activities; you’ll be able to find them.
- Don’t be put off by reports of civil strife elsewhere in Central America; Costa Rica has been safe and peaceful for decades.
- The dry season runs from December to April or May in San Jose (the capital) and the Pacific Coast and from January to April along the Caribbean.
- Some parts of the country can get rain year-round, and temperature is swayed more by altitude than season, so pack an umbrella and visit any time of year.
Additional details
Tours to Costa Rica usually focus on a combination of eco travel, wildlife, and adventure. You will usually find a tour that weighs one or two of these themes above the other.
If it’s your first visit to Costa Rica, try to find a tour that hits upon what Costa Rica is most known for. These include Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud F orest . Both attractions are extremely popular and are normally included in Costa Rica tour itineraries.
Outdoors and Active Costa Rica Tours
Most Costa Rica tours don’t have a heavy emphasis on cultural or historical sight seeing. Simply because the wildlife and outdoor tour activities are enough to occupy the days!
Wildlife lovers will want for nothing in Costa Rica, and most itineraries do focus heavily on the diverse wildlife found in Costa Rica’s rainforests and cloud forests. Some may not include Tortuguero National Park - and if you don’t want to miss observing sea turtles nesting or hatching be sure to find a tour that includes this park!
Some of the most famous animals you can see relatively easily in Costa Rica include the red-eyed tree frog, crocodiles, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, tapirs, basilisk lizards, coatimundis (the Costa Rican version of a raccoon!), and two kinds of sloth. A night safari might allow you to see some of the rarer or more elusive animals in the country, such as jaguars, kinkajous, tarantulas, and ocelots. Don't forget to look up - night is the best time to see snakes as they stalk for sleeping birds in the trees above.
If you decide to go snorkeling or scuba diving , you may run into bottlenose dolphins (or go see them on a dolphin swim !), green sea turtles and leatherbacks, sharks, and all kinds of tropical fish. Whale watching is also a great way to see orcas and humpback, blue, beaked, and pilot whales.
If you are interested in going on a birdwatching trip , there are also tons of beautiful and exotic birds. There are green and scarlet macaws, toucans, dozens of species of hummingbirds, and all kinds of birds of paradise -- including the rare national bird of Costa Rica, the Resplendent Quetzal.
Weather in Costa Rica
It gets quite wet and humid in Costa Rica, and the country is prone to hurricane conditions. Tour activities may change depending on the time of year, but generally you can expect to be walking through the rainforest in every sense of the word.
Most tours in Costa Rica will provide wet weather gear, though it is a good idea to pack light weight waterproof clothing for the majority of your tour. Long sleeves and pants can go a long way toward insect protection as well.
Eco Lodge Accommodation on Costa Rica Tours
Costa Rica has a long history as a leader in eco travel, and a majority of trips to Costa Rica have an eco, sustainable, and green travel theme . These will often feature a stay at an eco lodge, or even a treehouse! These can vary from luxury accommodations to comfortable-but-basic.
Don’t expect terribly reliable internet and electricity - particularly in keeping with the eco lodge approach! These establishments are designed to be as eco conscious as possible, and your tour will reveal new ways you can help contribute and be a responsible traveler.

Costa Rica Vacations, Tours, Trips & Travel Packages
Our Costa Rica Vacations and Tours
Costa Rica is certainly known for the friendliness of its people, its environmental concerns and its all-year-round good weather . However, there is much more to entice you to travel to go on a Costa Rica vacation. Above all are the diversity of places to visit and the wide choice of activities.
The country’s name means “Rich Coast” due to the vast quantities of jewels and gold found by the Spanish when they first discovered Costa Rica. It is bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea with excellent beaches on each coast with 1300 kilometres/800 miles of coastline in total. It has a reputation for its well-established systems for environmental sustainability programmes. In fact, 25% of the country consists of protected areas and national parks. Costa Rica has become the poster child for ecotourism.
Costa Rica Travel Highlights
San jose .
The capital, San Jose , is ringed by mountains and lush green valleys. Although like most capitals, it is quite hectic, there are several neighbourhoods which make San Jose a very walkable city on Costa Rica tours. It boasts an excellent selection of interesting museums and other cultural venues. One colourful highlight takes place every Thursday at the Parque Morazan when a troupe of jugglers performs accompanied by percussion music.
More information on visiting San Jose, Costa Rica
Tamarindo
Tamarindo, on the Pacific, not only offers bathing, sailing, fishing and diving but also has many art galleries and craft centres to enjoy. Papagayo Gulf, also located on the Pacific, is set in tropical scenery and is quieter than Tamarindo for a more isolated feel while on Costa Rica vacations.
Best Things to do on a Costa Rica Trip
National park excursions.
Arenal National Park in the north-central part of the country has the world’s most active volcano. Since 1968, it has averaged around 40 moderate eruptions a day but is very safe. The area is excellent for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, rafting and viewing wildlife while on a Costa Rica vacation. There are attractive waterfalls and hot springs and there is also an interesting butterfly conservatory.
Another interesting national park is Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve which has over 2500 different plants, 100 mammal and 400 bird species, many ecosystems and a well-laid-out system of trails.
The Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific consists of both rainforest and coral reefs that are stunningly beautiful. It has some of the best beaches in Costa Rica and is also rich in wildlife.
Wildlife tours
Tortuguero, on the Caribbean Coast, meaning “full of turtles” is a biologically diverse national park with an amazing selection of wildlife which includes the three-toed sloth and the jaguar. It is made up of rainforests, mangroves, swamps, lagoons and beaches.
Yet another wildlife reserve is Cano Negro in the north-central part of the country, it is a marshy jungle-like very remote area not easy to navigate unless on a tour. One way to explore is a floating safari through the tropical rainforest and marshland on Costa Rica tours.
For further volcanic activity, visit Rincon de la Vieja in the northwest with its trails, waterfalls and abundance of wildlife. You can experience bubbling sulphurous mud pits here. The area has wonderful vistas of natural beauty.

Is this tour right for you? Find out What to Expect
Passengers who purchase flights will depart the same day as the tour starts and return on the same day as the tour ends.
Note: Flights are not available on departures.
You can find more details on the Before You Depart page.
Day 1: Arrive in San José
Our unforgettable adventure to Costa Rica begins today as we arrive in San José and check into our hotel in the Central Valley, an exclusive area of Santa Ana in San José's outskirts that still maintains its traditional feel of a typical Costa Rican town. After we check-in, we'll have time to rest and relax and might consider enjoying the hotel's art collection - the largest art collection of Costa Rican artists after the national gallery. This evening, we'll enjoy a welcome dinner together.
Day 2: San José – Tortuguero
We'll depart early this morning and drive towards Tortuguero, stopping en route for a traditional breakfast of rice, beans, eggs, and fresh tropical fruit. From the port, we'll board a motorboat and navigate the Tortuguero canals to our hotel on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean side. After lunch, we'll visit the colorful village of Tortuguero where we'll learn more about the lives of the residents and shop for Afro-Caribbean handicrafts. Tortuguero depends on eco-tourism and sea turtle conservation so our visit and any purchases help to sustain this community and the turtle protection project. We'll return to our hotel and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure.
Day 3: Tortuguero
Today we'll discover the area's wildlife spotting birds, monkeys, caiman, and river turtles as we travel through the creeks and lagoons of Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero is the primary nesting site for the Green Turtle (July–October). Arrive earlier in the season and we may be lucky enough to see the larger Leatherback Turtle come ashore to lay her eggs. Outside of nesting season, there is plenty of wildlife to keep us occupied. November through January we may miss the turtles nesting, but we might have the chance to see baby turtles make their first dash into the waves. This afternoon is free to relax or explore independently.
Day 4: Tortuguero – Sarapiqui
After breakfast, we'll depart Tortuguero, traveling by boat through the verdant waterways to the port where we'll board our bus. We'll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant near Guapiles before we continue to Sarapiqui. Located on the banks of the Sarapiqui River and next to the Braulio Carrillo National Park, this area is a nature lover's paradise and a gateway to many thrilling adventures and activities. Upon arrival, we can enjoy the rainforest around our lodge or consider visiting a pineapple farm.
Day 5: Sarapiqui
This morning, we'll visit a family-run organic farm where we'll learn more about organic and sustainable agriculture as well as the history of the area's traditional products and how they've influenced the local economy and community. During our visit, we'll also learn about some of the crops that transcend borders like sugar cane, papaya, pineapple, banana, cocoa tunnel (chocolate-making process), and more! We'll also enjoy a delicious farm-to-table lunch before we enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 6: Sarapiqui – Arenal
Today, we'll travel onwards towards the northern lowlands enjoying the beautiful scenery which includes amazing views of the mountains and the famous Arenal Volcano, and one of the major sources of revenue in the area: agriculture. Upon arrival, we'll have free time. We might relax at our hotel's pool or consider joining an optional excursion.
Day 7: Arenal
This morning we'll embark on a hike into the forest of the Arenal Reserve. From the reserve's hanging bridges, we'll enjoy incredible views of the rainforest canopy, the Arenal Volcano, Arenal Lake, and the surrounding mountain range. During our excursion, we'll learn more about the native flora and fauna with plenty of opportunities to spot birds and howler monkeys in the surrounding canopy. This evening, we'll visit the home of Don Oscar and his family who own an amazing property with beautiful gardens. We'll explore the trails as the sun sets, spotting nocturnal wildlife at this magical time. We'll also enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared on a wood-burning stove before we return to our hotel for the evening.
Day 8: Arenal/Tamarindo
Today we'll make our way to Tamarindo, stopping en route to visit a Wildlife Rescue Center & Sanctuary for an up-close animal experience with rescued Costa Rican wildlife. We'll learn more about eco-responsibility and the challenges the country's conservations efforts face. We'll see how the staff work to rehabilitate injured animals like monkeys, deer, pigs, otters, birds, and wild cats. After lunch, we'll continue to Tamarindo where we'll check into our hotel. Tamarindo is home to some of the best beaches on Costa Rica's Pacific coastlline and the neighboring beach is a protected nesting ground for the endangered Leatherback Turtle during breeding season.
Day 9: Tamarindo at Leisure
Today is free to enjoy the beach, stroll through the beach town of Tamarindo, or enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Day 10: Tamarindo at Leisure
Today is free to enjoy the beach, stroll through the beach town of Tamarindo, or enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area. After our day at leisure, we'll come together at our hotel for a farewell dinner with our fellow travelers.
Day 11: Depart Tamarindo
Our tour comes to an end after breakfast today. Travelers who purchased the air-inclusive package will depart our hotel early this morning as we make our way back to Liberia Guanacaste Airport for our return flight to the USA. We'll arrive home filled with memories from our Costa Rican adventure!

Book now: One-way fares from the US to Costa Rica, Ecuador and more from $49
Avianca Airlines just dropped a major fare sale to a number of popular spots in Central and South America. If you're trying to figure out summer vacations or are looking ahead to the fall, this is an excellent way to lock in discounted airfare to places like Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua. Some flights are as low as $49 each way. The departure cities include Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.
To take advantage of the red sale, you must book your flights by April 14. The travel window is from now until March 27, 2025. This sale is for Avianca's basic economy tier. You get a free personal item, but a carry-on bag will cost you around $55 each way. A better deal is to check your bag, which will cost you roughly $45 each way.
Deal basics
Airline : Avianca Airlines
Routes : Many U.S. cities to Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua
How to book : Directly with the airline ; no code is needed
Travel dates : Now through March 27, 2025
Book by : 11:59 p.m. PDT on April 14
Check the Avianca website for specific restrictions.
Sample flights
This sale offers deals to airports such as:
- El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogota, Colombia
- La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, Guatemala
- Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Managua, Nicaragua
- Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO) in Quito, Ecuador
- Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica
- El Salvador International Airport (SAL) in San Salvador, El Salvador
- Palmerola International Airport (XPL) near Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Departure airports from the U.S. include:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C.
- Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
- George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston
- John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
I started the search from my home airport, MIA, because of its proximity to many of the destinations in this sale. It was no surprise that there were quite a few fares available, as low as $53 one-way. Departure flights to Managua were commonly around $53.
The trick was to find return flights. Most were about $103 or more, which still makes for a good deal. May and June, as well as January and February 2025, had good availability for this route at a discounted rate. Also, many of Avianca's routes from Miami are nonstop — another plus.
If you have the flexibility for a last-minute getaway, you can book a nonstop itinerary from Miami to El Salvador in late April for just $142 round-trip.
This sale offers great value in flights from Miami to Ecuador. We found a decent number of itineraries from MIA to UIO in May for just $210 round-trip. You can find similar prices for flights in September and October.
If Fort Lauderdale is more convenient, you can book a nonstop to Bogota in August or September for $184 round-trip.
If you live in Boston, there is good availability in this sale for flights to Guatemala in the fall. We found this itinerary from Boston to Guatemala City in September for $238. Keep in mind that there is a layover each way, but according to Google Flights , it's a substantial discount from typical rates.
There is good availability on flights from New York City to San Salvador, too. We found several departure flights from JFK in September for as little as $64.
Again, the trick is to find a return flight at the same discounted price. We did not have that luck, but combined, the itinerary still was a discount from normal fares for this route.
The best deal we found out of Los Angeles involved Guatemala. This nonstop itinerary from LA to Guatemala City in September is only $165 — a big markdown from the normal price.
Maximize your purchase
Be sure to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:
- Alaska Airlines Visa® credit card : An unlimited 3 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles per dollar spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases
- American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through amextravel.com
- The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
- Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ): 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
Bottom line
There are plenty of cheap flights to popular Central American destinations for this summer and fall, as well as into early 2025. Book as soon as you can to secure these deals on Avianca.
Pro tip: If you head to Ecuador, consider booking a flight to the Galapagos Islands to enjoy the archipelago's endless natural wonders.

Avianca Airlines Launches Airfare Sale to Costa Rica and Beyond
Avianca Airlines has launched a significant airfare sale to various popular destinations in Central and South America, including Costa Rica. If you’re planning your summer or fall vacation, this is an excellent opportunity to secure discounted airfare to Costa Rica and other destinations like Colombia, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Some flights are as low as $49 each way, with departures from cities such as Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco.
One of the featured destinations in this sale is, of course, Costa Rica, with flights arriving at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. From Miami International Airport (MIA), we found Costa Rica flights for as little as $85 each way but there may be even less expensive rates, you would just need to check your specific dates of travel.
To take advantage of this incredible sale, you must book your flights by April 14 . The travel window is extensive, ranging from now until March 27, 2025. This sale applies to Avianca’s basic economy tier, which includes a free personal item, but carry-on bags and checked luggage come with additional fees (what else is new!).
It’s great to see our beautiful country standing out as a premier destination in Avianca Airlines’ latest fare sale. While the sale includes various locations across Central and South America, Costa Rica shines as the ultimate tropical getaway for travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
No matter what type of adventure you seek, Costa Rica has something to offer. Nature enthusiasts can explore our renowned national parks, such as Manuel Antonio and Tortuguero, where exotic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes abound. Adventure seekers can participate in a variety of water sports, from surfing and snorkeling to white-water rafting and kayaking. And for those looking to unwind, our picturesque beaches provide the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.
By taking advantage of Avianca Airlines’ fare sale, you can make your dream Costa Rican vacation a reality while saving money on airfare. Remember to book your flights by April 14 to lock in these discounted prices and start planning your unforgettable trip to Costa Rica or other exciting destinations in Central and South America.
Don’t forget to check the Avianca website for any specific restrictions or additional details about this sale. Whether you’re looking to explore new sights or revisit familiar places, Avianca’s fare sale is your ticket to come to Costa Rica or other countries in the America’s at a fraction of the cost.
