Taj Mahal: The Eternal Masterpiece
The epitome of Mughal architecture, the Taj Mahal is so grand it warrants two visits – one at dawn and another at dusk, when its color looks entirely different. Opportunities to view other icons of the Mughal empire abound, as hauntingly beautiful Agra Fort and the red sandstone former capital of Fatehpur Sikri are easily within reach. An expressive kathak dance performance and a consultation with a leading astrologer shed light on the local culture, while shopping in Agra reveals the exquisite quality of Indian jewelry.
- 2 nights in Agra | 1 night in Delhi
- Economy-class flights to Delhi and Cochin
- Travel in air-conditioned deluxe coaches
- Entrance fees and camera and video charges at the Taj Mahal
- Kathak dance performance
- Options to visit Agra Fort; shop in Agra; and receive a private reading of your horoscope
- Select meals
Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal
Become immersed in the culture of Nepal, a country shaped in many ways by the snowcapped Himalayas. That backdrop looks especially dramatic while flying by iconic Mount Everest, yet the cities may be even more striking. Extraordinary stupas rise above Patan, Newari architecture graces Kathmandu and all of medieval Bhaktapur is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unusual cultural opportunities include an audience with a Kumari living goddess, watching an Aarti prayer offering at a Hindu temple and seeing how singing bowls are used to heal by sound.
- 3 nights in Kathmandu
- Economy-class flights per the itinerary
- Flightseeing over the Himalayas near Mt. Everest
- Visits to 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites
- An audience with a kumari living goddess in Patan
- Camera charges at sites
Ajanta & Ellora Caves
Explore two UNESCO World Heritage site cave complexes, both hand-cut from solid rock to create religious sanctuaries. The 2nd-century Ajanta Caves contain arguably the world’s most important Buddhist wall paintings. The colors are still vibrant, thanks to an infra-red restoration process that removed centuries of grime. The Ellora Caves are noteworthy because their stone sanctuaries are devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, a clear illustration of ancient India’s religious tolerance. The enormous, heavily ornamented Kailasa temple there was carved from a single block of stone.
- 3 nights in Aurangabad
- Economy-class internal flights
- Tours of the Ajanta and Ellorca Caves
- Visit the Black Taj tomb
- Watch artisans weave shawls and sarees
- Camera charges

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year
By Ria Gupta
From the early days of exploration to modern luxury liners, sailing has long been a way to see the world from a different perspective. While cruise culture in India is still young, several operators and companies across the country are carving out a niche for themselves by offering new ways to see the country and travel slow and easy. State-of-the-art vessels equipped with modern amenities offer the perfect vantage to enjoy India’s wealth of culture, history and wildlife. From the backwaters of Kerala to the Ganges and Brahmaputra with their bustling ports and historical cities, here is our pick of the four best cruises in India that you can take this year.
Secret of Sunderbans Jungle Cruise by Antara Cruises
Wildlife enthusiasts look no further. The five-day Sunderbans Jungle cruise aboard the Ganges Voyager traces the culture and wildlife along the majestic Hooghly River. The vessel embarks from Kolkata and makes its way towards the fishing port of Namkhana, the gateway to the Sundarbans. The ship cruises past towns and villages till it enters the protected mangrove forests. Hereon, there are stops at various watchtowers and islands for sightings of endangered crocodiles, terrapins, migratory birds and if you are lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger . The Sundarbans with its unique and fragile biodiversity has a wealth of flora and fauna that will be pointed out by an expert naturalist on board. This apart, there is plenty to take in by way of culture and history—from centuries-old temples to glimpses of local life in the surrounding villages. The days are spent either meandering down the river or excursions onshore, evenings are usually reserved for unwinding over drinks and watching folk dances and musical performances from the region. The Ganges Voyager is an all-suite ship which can accommodate up to 56 guests and is done up in a heritage colonial style with Burma teak, vintage furniture and hand-stencilled walls. There are five categories of rooms across three decks, all of which offer expansive views from floor to ceiling windows or balconies. The ship has a restaurant offering an array of local delicacies as well as Continental fare, a lounge, sun deck and a fitness centre and spa for some quick rejuvenation after a day of sightseeing.
Fare: From Rs1,20,000 per person including stay, all onboard activities, onground excursions as per the itinerary, all meals and complimentary yoga sessions.
Next sailing date: 17 February 2023
Brahmaputra Maximum by Assam Bengal Navigation
For those who want an immersive dive into the riverine culture of Assam, this 10-night cruise along the Brahmaputra packs it all in. This journey begins at Neamati Ghat which is 1.5 hours from Jorhat Airport. Adventures begin from day two as you sail down the mighty Brahmaputra and witness the river in its splendid flow. Enroute you will stop to see the temples of Sibsagar, the one-time capital of the Ahom kings of Assam; have lunch at an Assamese tea estate; and cruise to Majuli Island for a shore excursion. The cruise follows villages and historical sites along the Brahmaputra till it reaches the boundaries of the Kaziranga National Park. Elephants can be spotted on the banks as well as the park’s most famous denizen, the one-horned rhino, so keep a lookout. Guests will enjoy three jungle safaris across different parts of this expansive and stunning national park. The rest of the days are spent meandering through local markets on rickshaws in Tezpur, visiting temple ruins, river islands and stopping by to learn about Assamese silk weaving in Sualkuchi, the centre of the silk industry in the state. ABN operates its cruises from July to April. The Brahmaputra cruises begin in October. March and April is the best time to spot wildlife. The Brahmaputra Maximum journeys are undertaken in the ABN Sukapha and ABN Charaidew II. ABN Sukapha is a 12-cabin vessel designed especially for the waters of the Brahmaputra, while the ABN Charaidew II is a newer and sprawling 18-cabin addition to the fleet, which cruises faster than others thanks to an extra-shallow draught. The ABN Sukapha is designed as an expedition-style boat with cane and bamboo decor, a dining room, sundeck, a spa and a saloon with a library. The ABN Charaidew II is a colonial-style ship complete with wood and rattan accents, local Assamese art and handloom furnishings. There is a lounge, dining room, spa and expansive sundeck perfect for sunset views and cocktails. The food is locally sourced and buffet-style with an expansive roster of local dishes.

This five-day round trip from Mumbai covers Kochi and Lakshwadweep packs in a host of onshore and offshore activities and also allows you to party away all your nights at sea. The highlight of the journey falls somewhere between day one and two, when the vessel touches the international waters and the open seas provide fabulous views in all directions. From there, the ship heads to Kochi, where those who opt for land excursions head out to explore popular landmarks of the city such as Fort Kochi, St Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace and more. Day four is a trip to Lakshwadweep, where the ship is anchored and guests disembark via smaller boats to reach Agatti beach. These traditional boats were once used to ferry grain and spices and have been refurbished with modern amenities while keeping their bamboo and coir frame intact. The cruises by CGH Earth take a round trip from Alleppey to Kumarakom on the Vembanad Lake. A one-night journey is perfect for a quick introduction to the backwaters. On longer journeys, the boat docks at the banks for guided tours that explore the local life and culture. There are plenty of local markets to explore and smaller wooden canoes to paddle through the narrow canals. Cruise to Cochin, India
Cochin shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in cochin.
Multicultural Roots
Old white Church in Cochin, India
Although you will find a physical fort in Cochin's Old Town, it's what's inside the walls that's the most impressive. Admire the colorful storefronts of Princess Street, stroll around the well-kept grounds of St. Francis Church, or visit the Paradesi Synagogue in Jewish Town, which provides a fascinating look into the Jewish heritage of Kerala.
Caught in a Net
Chinese fishing nets hanging over the ocean in Cochin, India
Another photogenic Cochin attraction is the so-called Chinese Fishing Nets, which are the same types of devices Chinese fishermen have been using here for centuries. These exist all over Kerala, but the ones on the northern end of Fort Cochin are particularly stunning, especially at sunset.
Get an Ayurvedic Treatment
Kerala is famous for Ayurveda, and Old Cochin boasts dozens of parlors where you can sample this traditional Indian health method. Whether you get a relaxing massage using fragrant locally sourced oil or a reflexology treatment, Ayurveda is as enjoyable for people curious about alternative medicine as it is for tried-and-true naturopaths.
Local Cuisine
Cochin is one of Kerala's best spots for traditional South Indian fare. Cruise to India and be sure to stop in a local seafood restaurant near the Chinese Fishing Nets. Try zesty Crab Masala, which pairs locally caught whole crabs with India's most famous spice blend. Sample appams , a fluffy pancake made from fermented rice, or head to ultra-popular Dal Roti for kathi rolls, a paratha flatbread wrapped around skewer-roasted meat.
Whether or not you have a chance to get an Ayurvedic treatment, you can take home a piece of this culture treasure during your India cruise. Shops along Princess Street not only sell oils used in Ayurvedic massage, such as romantic rose and sensual sandalwood, as well as handmade incense sticks that will make your home smell like the streets of Cochin.

This is an excellent time to visit popular destinations like Rajasthan, the Taj Mahal, and South India, as the temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
However, if you want to experience India’s vibrant festivals, particularly Diwali and Holi, or explore the Himalayan region for trekking and adventure, the best time to visit would be during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November). These months offer a balance between manageable weather conditions and cultural experiences.
It’s also essential to consider factors like local holidays, festivals and peak tourist seasons. It’s always a good idea to consult with one of our cruise agents who will give you the best advice!

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.
India recorded a cruise tourism footfall of 470,000 in the 2023-24 financial year – its highest ever. Domestic tourists accounted for nearly 80% of this, as international cruise tourism in India has yet to revive to pre-Covid levels.
In 2019-20, the international and domestic tourists were roughly equal out of the 420,000 cruise passengers.
Popularity of cruise tourism in India: While efforts are on to revive international tourism in the segment, there is an increase in popularity of cruises among domestic tourists. Compared to 2019-20, domestic tourists have increased by nearly 85%. Indian tourists are also key for the cruise industry in countries such as Singapore, while Abu Dhabi is also seeking to attract Indian tourists to its cruise offerings.
India’s efforts to boost cruise tourism: India is seeking to boost its cruise tourism. During the G20 Summit last year, secretary of tourism V Vidhyavathi had said that India is aiming to attract 4 million cruise tourists by 2041, up from around 300,000 in 2023.
For this, a draft national strategy for tourism has also been formulated with the aim of making India a preferred cruising destination across deep sea cruises, coastal cruises, river cruises, and yacht cruises.
While cruise lines such as Cordelia Cruises and Costa Cruise are currently operating domestic cruises in the Arabian Sea, the government is also looking to develop river cruise tourism with an investment of INR 450 billion ($5.4 billion).
Europe Introduces New Schengen Visa Rules for Indians
The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indians when applying for the Schengen visas. The regime aims to offer longer, multi-entry Schengen visas to Indian tourists.
Speaking to industry players, Skift reported that while multi-year visas with longer durations were already offered to Indians, there was no standard policy in this regard. This new policy is likely to make the issuing of such visas more standardized across all Schengen states.
However, this new regime is not likely to speed up the visa processing times, which is currently posing to be a major challenge for Indians as they gear up for their summer travels.

The maiden bullet train corridor in India will cover a distance of 508 km, of which work has been completed on more than 290 km. Initially slated for completion in August 2022, the project ran into delays over land surveys and acquisition.

The ratings will be granted on a five-point scale on the basis of various parameters such as location, wind speed, AQI, and cloud cover.
Sun tourism is becoming a popular trend among travelers as people are flocking towards different destinations specifically to view the sunrise or sunset views. Kanniyakumari has a sunset point, which is a very popular tourist attraction. Apart from this, Manali and Rishikesh are also key destinations that travelers visit in order to enjoy the view of the sun.

Out-of-control 700ft cruise ship crunches into dock at Turkish port
This is the moment a 700ft cruise ship crunched into a dock at a Turkish port after desperately trying to slow down.
The Celestyal Journey cruise ship was making a routine arrival into the port in Kusadasi, Turkey last week when it hit the concrete pier with its bow bulb.
The crew miscalculated the speed and approached the pier too quickly, resulting in the collision, Cruise Hive reported.
Members of the vessel's 597-person crew reportedly lowered the anchor in a bid to slow the approach, but despite their efforts the ship still crashed into the pier.
The collision caused only minimal damage to the ship and pier. No injuries were reported onboard or on the shore.
The Celestyal Journey struck a pier at Kusadasi Cruise Port on Monday last week at 12pm local time while crew were trying to dock.
Passengers were still able to enjoy their day in Kusadasi, one of the most well-preserved Greco-Roman cities in the world, as planned, according to Cruise Hive.
The port, which has eight berths for large ships, is the most popular cruise port in Turkey. Officials say the incident has not negatively impacted operations.
Celestyal Cruises, which operates the vessel and two other ships, did not have to alter any routes following the incident.
The Celestyal Journey entered service in 1994 and initially sailed for Holland America Line as Ryndam. Celestyal Cruises acquired the cruise ship last year.
The cruise liner has 630 cabins, including 149 that feature balconies, and offers guests access to seven exclusive restaurants, and eight bars and lounges, Haber7.com reported.
Celestyal Journey is currently sailing seven-night cruises in the Aegean Sea region until late October 2024.
However, unlike a typical closed-loop route, the Celestyal Journey's round-trip sailings overlap, allowing guests to embark and debark in Kusadasi, as well as various cities in Greece.
Travellers can start their voyage in Heraklion, Crete Greece; Piraeus-Athens, Greece; or Thessaloniki, Greece.
The ship's final journey in the Aegean Sea will embark on October 19 this year. It will be followed by a 14-day repositioning cruise from Athens to Doha, Qatar.
Once it arrives in its new homeport in Doha, the Celestyal Journey will offer seven-night roundtrip sailings to the United Arab Emirates.
MailOnline has approached Celestyal Cruises for comment.
Announcing the Hot List Winners of 2024
By CNT Editors
It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

India delivers Brahmos missiles to Philippines
The first batch of BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles from India has been delivered to the Philippines by an Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft. The missiles arrived at Clark International Airport in Pampanga on 19 April, according to Indian media.
The Brahmos will be used by the Philippine Marine Corps to build its Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile (SBASM) system.
The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) signed a contract worth approximately US$375 million for the acquisition of the Indo-Russian BrahMos medium-range supersonic cruise missiles in January 2022.
The deal calls for three missile batteries, each of which comprises mobile launchers – equipped with three missiles each – and associated datalinks and tracking systems.
Depending on the variant, the BrahMos cruise missile can be launched from a ship, aircraft, submarine, or land-based launcher and has a top speed of around Mach 2.8. It can carry warheads weighing up to 300 kg.
Based on imagery earlier released by the Marine Corps on its social media channel, it appears that a modified, twin-missile mobile launcher design has been adopted instead of the standard triple-missile launcher configuration used by the Indian armed forces.
The SBASM battalion, activated in April 2022, will be operating the anti-ship missile system. The Marine Corps have also activated a new unit known as the Shore-Based Air Defense System (SBADS) battalion. According to the AFP news agency, the SBADS will protect SBASM assets from aerial threats during anti-ship missile launch operations.
Both the SBASM and the SBADS are sub-formations of the Marine Corps’ Coastal Defense Regiment, which was also recently stood up in August 2020.
The Philippine Army is also seeking to acquire two BrahMos batteries for coastal defence missions under the third tranche, known as ‘Horizon Three’, of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernisation Program (RAFPMP) which runs from 2023-2027.
