Award winning cycling tours

Irish Cycling Safaris have been organising bike tours in the west coast of Ireland since 1989.

Since then we have expanded our cycling holidays to cover the length and breadth of Ireland as well as numerous locations all over Europe. However our ethos has not changed over that time, we still aim to offer good quality biking tours in the most beautiful scenery at affordable prices.

A great opportunity to discover some of Irelands historical gems

This tour takes you through some of the most historic areas in Ireland.  From the 5000 year old burial chambers at Newgrange to the stately castles such as Trim and Malahide Castles.

The route takes you out of Dublin on quiet back roads through the farm lands that service the city to the beautiful and historic Boyne Valley. On roads undiscovered by tourists the route heads north through the spectacular Cooley Mountains to the medieval town of Carlingford. Returning to Dublin through the rich pasture lands of Meath and Kildare the route passes the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland at Tara.

There is a mixture of hilly and flat roads on this tour. Leaving and approaching Dublin the roads are largely flat but are hillier further north.

Terrain: A mainly low lying terrain with gentle climbs. Afternoon of Day 2 and afternoon of day 3 do have climbs

Clare & the Burren

  231   km   (~ 46 km  per day)

Guided , Self-Guided

A unique part of Ireland hugging the coastline with a rocky limestone landscape, sprinkled with vibrantly coloured flowers.

Our tour start in the historical town of Ennis, renowned for its traditional music. We set off through rolling countryside on quiet backroads towards the Atlantic Ocean where we stay on its shores listening to the waves rolling in.

Each night we stay by the coast and every day our cycling is rewarded in some way. From the famous Cliffs of Moher (Europe's highest) to the village of Doolin (famous for its three pubs that compete to have the best music). Or the spectacular coastal ride from the matchmaking town of Lisdoonvarna to Ballyvaughan with the Burren on one side and views across to the Aran Islands, Galway Bay and Connemara beyond on the other.

We cycle deep into the heart of the Burren passing by its megalithic tombs and limestone plateaux on our way back to Ennis for a final night together.

Although the terrain is undulating, the mileage is not too high and this would be one of our least challenging tours in Ireland. Also due to the myriad of backroads in this area, the Clare tour is a great choice for making a bespoke tour to your exact needs, making days shorter and easier is always an option. We offer an "easy" tour in the area, which takes in an extra rest day and starts in Ennis and finishes in Galway. We offer a "family" tour which has reduced mileage each day. As well as this we offer shorter tours in Clare.

Terrain: There are some hills on the route. With the exception of the roads in and out of Ennis, the traffic on the route should be quite light.

Connemara Galway and Mayo

  265   km   (~ 53 km  per day)

With magnificent scenery, roads that go around the mountains rather than over them, colourful villages, and a fantastic coastline.

Connemara is one of the most popular destinations for cyclists coming to Ireland.   It's easy to see why Lonely Planet claimed that our Connemara Safari was one of the must do cycling trips in Europe.

This Safari starts and finishes in Galway city, Ireland's liveliest city with cobbled streets of entertainers, pubs spilling over with merriment and the wonderful backdrop of Galway Bay.  The tour starts with a transfer to the village of Clonbur,  away from busy roads, where the cycling starts.

Our route takes in the best of the area including the colourful town of Westport, the pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, the stunning Delphi Valley, Killary Harbour, Kylemore Abbey, Clifden and the famous Sky Road. We ride across spectacular open bogland, pass deserted beaches. On our last day we take a ferry over to the Aran Island to visit the dramatic hill fort of Dun Aengus.   We stay overnight stay on the Island and take the late afternoon ferry back to the mainland on our last day.

Terrain: Climbs on day one becoming easier each day, lots of choices to make route easier or harder.

Connemara, Best of the West

  260   km   (~ 52 km  per day)

  Mostly flat , Quiet roads

Due to the incredible popularity of Connemara as a cycling destination, we have two tours running in this beautiful part of the country. The other tour in this area is Connemara, Galway & Mayo

On the Connemara - Best of the West trip we take in some of the best that Connemara has to offer including Killary Harbour and the stunning Delphi Valley and the beautiful town of Westport.  However we head north into Mayo and cycle along the lovely Greenways Cycle towards the island of Achill. We have a chance to explore Achill with its stunning beaches before finishing up our tour cycling on quiet backroads to the Museum of Country Life near Castlebar. A transfer at the end of the week brings us back to the start point, the city of Galway.

This is an easier cycle, there is one day of climbing on our Connemara, Galway & Mayo tour which is not on this tour. Also mileage on this tour is a little lower which makes it a more suitable cycle for younger legs.   There are also options to take a break from cycling on a number of days,  for example we arrive early in Leenane and you have the choice of relaxing in the hotel spa or you can keep cycling on some fantastic routes.

Terrain: This tour does not involve any major climbs and it is a good option for those looking to take it a bit easier.

Copper Coast

  285   km   (~ 57 km  per day)

An area known as the "Sunny South East" a wonderful part of the country and a popular destination for Irish people on their holidays.

The tour starts in Kilkenny, perhaps the most attractive Irish city. It is dominated by a spectacular castle on a bend in the river Nore and has a wealth of historic buildings knitted together by narrow cobbled streets boasting many lively pubs and fine restaurants.

This tour blends some of Ireland's best heritage sights with a relatively undiscovered but still stunning coastline. Leaving Kilkenny behind, the cycle brings you towards the coast where our first stop is New Ross, whose famine ship gives a haunting reminder of a dark chapter in Irish history. Some more recent history can be experienced at the Kennedy Visitor centre,  dedicated to JFK whose family came from this area, before a quaint ferry will bring us across Waterford Harbour to stop at the truly special place of Dunmore East. Here there are lovely beaches and magnificent views to enjoy.

The Copper Coast itself is a spectacular cycle where the road twists along cliffs and then plunges into and out of coves. The picturesque seaside town of Dungarvan is where we take our rest day, before heading inland to the Rock of Cashel. This is one of Ireland's most spectacular archaeological sites, standing proudly atop a limestone hill dominating the surrounding countryside. The nearby Bru Boru Heritage and Cultural centre provides an interesting insight into Irish traditional music.

The cycling finishes in Cashel and after visiting the Castle there is a transfer back to Kilkenny for a final night on the tour.

Terrain: Some hills. With the exception of the roads in and out of the larger towns, the traffic on the route should be quite light.

Highlands of Donegal

  314   km   (~ 63 km  per day)

One of our hillier trips in Ireland but all efforts are greatly rewarded with wonderful scenery and incredible beaches

We keep to quiet backroads passing some of Ireland's most wonderful coastal scenery. Dramatic mountains fall into the Atlantic Ocean interspersed with some of the most unspoilt beaches you are likely to find. We continue through a rolling landscape of quiet sleepy villages and stop in Leo's pub where Enya and Clannad first sang.

Your cycle starts to the wonderful coastline towards the Slieve League Marine Cliffs on our way to the first nights stop, the Irish speaking village of Glencolmcille.

Your cycle brings you through Glenveigh, Ireland's largest National Park where conservationists work hard to keep the wild rhododendron under control. Your rest day is in the seaside village of Dunfanaghy before you continue on our journey to the town of Ramelton. Your last days cycle see you exploring the wonderful Fanad peninsula before a final transfer brings you back to Donegal town for a final night on the tour.

Terrain: The roads are all tarmaced & mostly on quiet back roads. Some steep climbs and winding roads. Undulating terrain.

Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula

  280   km   (~ 56 km  per day)

This tour offers some of the most dramatic scenery Ireland has to offer. The tour is hilly but all efforts are greatly rewarded with stunning coastal vistas.

Our Safari starts and finishes in Killarney, shadowed by the MacGillikuddy Reeks and adjacent to the famous Muckross National Park. We head deep into the Iveragh Peninsula along quiet backroads toward the villages of Sneem and Glenbeigh.

On towards Dingle Peninsula, the most westerly point in Europe, sees us cycling along he dramatic Slea Head coast amongst Neolithic ruins with wonderful views out to the Skelling and Blasket Islands. We rest amongst the great array of shops and restaurants that the town of Dingle has to offer. The weary may pause for a well earned pint in the famous Dick Macs pub, which doubles up as a cobbler!

Conor Pass stretches the legs as we take in the stunning vistas of the peninsula from its lofty perch before enjoying the freewheel down to lunch. Our last day's cycle takes us through the Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley, a fitting finish to this dramatic tour, before we end up all too quickly back in Killarney.

We also organise a short tour which focuses on the Iveragh Peninsula.

West Cork Coastline Safari

  305   km   (~ 61 km  per day)

A cycle that takes in the unique beauty of Gougane Barra before heading down to the sea at Bantry Bay. A wonderful tour that hugs the coastline all along West Cork.

A wonderful tour that hugs the coastline all along West Cork. Our starting point is Cork City on the banks for the river Lee. It is the river that provides our inspiration as we begin our journey following backroads along its course to the wonderful glacial lake and hermitage retreat of Gougane Barra.

The fresh salty air of the Atlantic Ocean is our next inspiration as we sweep down towards Bantry Bay and take in the wonderfully remote and unspoilt charms of the Sheep's Head Peninsula. We hug the coastline for the rest of the week takin in the charming villages of Baltimore, Union Hall and Glandore, with the nearby Neolithic stone circle of Drombeg.

The towns of Clonakilty and Kinsale await where the brightly coloured villages compete with each other for your attention, all this connected by sweet scented fushia-lined backroads. The set departure date tours finish up in Kinsale, whereas the self guided tour heads back to Cork city for the last night.

Wicklow Safari

  244   km   (~ 49 km  per day)

A chance to stay in Dublin before heading south to the Wicklow mountains. It is a beautiful area known as the "Garden of Ireland."

Many visit Dublin without seeing its best feature, the coast. Our safari takes in the beautiful southeast coastline as well as the magnificent landscapes and rich history and folklore that the Wicklow Mountains has to offer.

Our self guided Wicklow tours starting from Dublin, we take straight to the coast passing through Dalkey (with its many famous residents) and on towards the beautiful Killiney Bay (likened to the Bay of Naples) and the tiny village of Enniskerry where we spend one night. The following day you head into the heart of the Wicklow Mountains as you explore the 'Garden of Ireland' in all its beauty. It is in its deep glens that much of the peculiar charm of Wicklow scenery is to be found, with rugged natural features, rich and lavish woods, beautiful lakes and stunning valleys.

You spend two nights in Laragh, located beside the monastic village of Glendalough with its ruined abbey and distinctive round tower. Here you have the opportunity to relax in the tranquil surroundings and walk one of the numerous signed ways around the surrounding lakes. We head over the mountains to Glenmalure and stay in the lovely peaceful village of Aughrim before continuing to the harboured Wicklow town. On the last day you will cycle inlands again, before being transferred back to Dublin, for a final night in this vibrant capital city.

The roads are all tarmaced and mainly on quiet back roads, except at start of cycle. Some steep climbs and rolling hills.

West Cork & Kerry Safari

  Some hills

A tour that takes in the stunning remote beauty of the Beara peninsula, the unique beauty of Gougane Barra along with the bustling character of Killarney and its lakes.

Shadowed by mountains and adjacent to Muckross National Park, Killarney has been impressing visitors with its dramatic scenery, long before Queen Victoria made it fashionable.

Our Safari winds its way through the National Park, passing by the famous "Ladies View", to bring us to the coast and the picturesque town of Kenmare. We then make our way out along the Beara Peninsula following its Northern Edge with its stunning vistas and colourful villages of Eyeries and Allihies.

Castletownbere offers an obligatory pint at the famous McCarthy's bar before we take in the views and vistas afforded by the southern side of the peninsula. For 2021 we are taking a transfer direct to explore the magnificent jewel of West Cork, the Sheeps Head Peninsula The serenity of the glacial valley of Gougane Barra is a wonderful overnight stop before completing our loop by returning to Killarney.

Terrain: Although there are a few hills to climb the mileage on a number of days is low..

It would be helpful if the bikes were equipped with an odometer so that including distances to the next turn. In addition or instead of a 15 page direction packet with paragraph instructions on where to turn maps of each days recommended rides would have been extraordinarily helpful. Without google gps and our own planning we wouldn’t have reached each destination in our self guided trip without getting lost and having to backtrack to see where we went wrong. The first day was frustrating without knowing we just needed to use google instead of the provided information. In addition a plastics zipper bag to carry the maps was less than adequate in a country with so much rain. We took several wrong turns and didn’t feel directions telling up to look for a blue barn where helpful. A positive is that the locals are Read More super nice and helpful!

Cycling can mean many things to many different people, a form of transport, a sociable outlet, something to challenge yourself or a way to explore the world. We are here to offer advice and services, our aim is to be a lot more than a shop but an opportunity to chat to the experts and meet others who love cycling over a cup of coffee!

This tour takes you through some of the most historic areas in Ireland. From the 5000 year old burial chambers at Newgrange to the stately Trim and Malahide Castles.

The route takes you out of Dublin on quiet back roads, through the farm lands that service the city, to the beautiful and historic Boyne Valley.

Malahide, County Dublin

The tour starts with an overnight stay in this attractive Dublin seaside village.

cycling safaris dublin

Malahide ~ Drogheda (55 kms)

You leave the picturesque seaside village of Malahide following the shores of the swords estuary past flocks of wild birds into the north Dublin market gardens which provide much of the city’s vegetables. Keeping to quiet undiscovered roads you arrive at the river Boyne where head to the historic town of Drogheda, a bustling place with plenty of bars and restaurants.

cycling safaris dublin

Drogheda ~ Carrickmacross (35kms)

Today you cycle to the historical highlight of the tour, the Newgrange Burial Chamber. This UNESCO World Heritage site is more than a passage tomb. At over 5000 years old its design, construction and astrological complexity defy comprehension. Heading into the undulating pasture lands with views of the Cooley mountains appearing and disappearing as you travel to our accommodation

cycling safaris dublin

Carrickmacross ~ Carlingford (67kms)

On pleasant, mostly flat roads through rich dairy lands, our route winds its way through sleepy villages to the Cooley peninsula with its stone walls and forest shaded lanes. You cycle to the northern side of the peninsula with the spectacular panorama of Carlingford Lough and the Mountains of Mourne sweeping down to the sea (as in the famous song) towards the medieval village of Carlingford.

cycling safaris dublin

Rest day in Carlingford

Carlingford is a wonderful place for a rest day. There is an adventure centre which can organise all manner of activities from gentle strolls to high wire, from a quiet paddle in a kayak to abseiling on the mountain. Or you could wander around the many historic buildings, punctuating your tour with visits to some of the village’s cafes, pubs and restaurants.

cycling safaris dublin

Carlingford ~ Trim (54 kms)

You cycle to Kells or Ceannus Mor as it is known in Irish, where the Book of Kells, a lavishly illustrated handmade copy of the scriptures penned by monks circa 800 ad, was found. Your cycle brings you through the Irish (Gaelic) speaking region of Racthcarin befpre returning to the banks of the Boyne at your overnight stop in the town of Trim. Don’t miss the largely intact 12th century Trim Castle which has featured in several movies.

cycling safaris dublin

Trim ~ Dublin (55 - 75 kms)

You cycle to the Hill of Tara a site of historical, mythical and religious significance where 142 kings are said to have ruled from. Our final destinatios is teh Phoenix Park, one of the largest city parks in the world, where you can spot herds of deer within 3km of the city centre. The accommodation tonight is in wonderful harbour town of Dun Laoghaire, which has so much to offer in its own right but also a short train journey from Dublin city centre.

Booking Conditions

Irish Cycling Safaris Ltd (“the Company”) accepts bookings subject to the following conditions:

  • The contract is between the Company and the client, being any person travelling or intending to travel on a tour operated by the company. The contract, including all matters arising from it, is subject to Irish law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish courts. A booking is accepted and becomes definite only from the date when the company sends a confirmation. It is at this point that a contract between the company and the client comes into existence. Before your booking is confirmed and comes into existence the company reserves the right to increase or decrease brochure prices. The company or their agents reserve the right to decline any booking at their discretion.
  • To secure a booking the Company or their agent requires a completed booking form and the necessary deposit. (Full payment if travel within 60 days). The first named client must be over 18 years of age. Clients booking by telephone, by website/E-mail or fax will be deemed to have signed the booking form and read and accepted our terms of booking. The person signing, or being deemed to sign, the booking form warrants that he/she has full authority to do so on behalf of all persons whose names appear thereon, and confirms that all such persons are fully aware of and accept these conditions.
  • The balance of all monies due, including any surcharges applicable at the time, must be paid to the company or their agents not later than 60 days before departure. In the case of non-payment of the balance by the due date the Company reserves the right to cancel your booking and cancellation charges will apply. If any cheque is dishonoured we reserve the right to charge €25 to cover administration costs.
  • Travel Insurance is mandatory for all clients whilst on a tour organised by the Company. Clients are wholly responsible for arranging their own insurance. Clients are responsible for ensuring that they are in possession of private Travel insurance with protection for the full duration of the tour in respect of at least medical expenses, injury, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment, with adequate cover.
  • An administration fee of €25 per booking plus any additional costs incurred will be charged if a confirmed booking is changed or transferred to a different departure date or tour, up to 60 days prior to departure. Thereafter all changes will be treated as cancellations and subject to the relevant charges. Changes are subject to availability. For an administration fee of €25 you may request a credit voucher. This must be redeemed within 12 months of issue and must be used against a new booking. The voucher is non transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash. In certain circumstances, which the Company considers reasonable, the booking may be transferred to another suitable person; however the tour arrangements must remain the same and will only be allowed if all suppliers agree to accept the name change. If a transfer is allowed an administration charge of €25 per person will be charged plus any extra charges levied by suppliers.

Should the client wish to cancel, cancellation charges will be imposed. These are calculated from the day written notification is received by the company or their agent as a percentage of the total tour price, including surcharges as follows:

> 60 days before departure – retention of deposit

60-14 days before departure – 50%

< 14 days before departure – 100%

  • Clients are responsible for arranging, and must be in possession of, a valid passport and any visas and vaccination certificates required for the whole of their journey. Information about these matters or related items (climate, clothing, baggage, personal items etc) is given in good faith but without responsibility on the part of the company.
  • Should the client have a reason to complain, you must immediately notify our representative and the relevant supplier. If the client’s complaint is not dealt with satisfactorily at the time, they must write to us with full details of the complaint within 28 days of the end of the tour. Failure to notify complaints entirely within accordance of this clause will diminish or extinguish the client’s ability to claim compensation.
  • The company provides all services on a “ground only” basis. The client is responsible for arranging their own travel to the designated start points of each tour. The company cannot accept any liability for any delay/cancellation in your transportation and cannot offer any refunds for lost holiday time.
  • Clients agree to accept the authority and decisions of the Company’s employees, tour leaders and agents whilst on the tour with the company. If in the opinion of such persons the health, level of fitness or conduct of a client at any time before or after departure appears likely to endanger the safe, comfortable or happy progress of a tour the client may be excluded from all or part of the tour without refund or recompense. In the case of ill health the company may make such arrangements as it sees fit and recover the costs thereof from the client. If a client commits an illegal act the client may be excluded from the tour and the Company shall cease to have responsibility to/for them. If you are affected by a condition, medical or otherwise, that might affect you or affect other people’s enjoyment or active participation of the tour, you must advise us at the time of booking. No refund will be given for any unused services.

The Company will use its best endeavours to operate all tours as advertised. However, it reserves the right to change any of the facilities, services, prices or itineraries described in our brochure/website. If a major change is necessary or deemed advisable, the company will advise the client as soon as reasonably possible, if there is no time before departure. A major change does not apply to a change of transport or named accommodation, but is usually considered a major change in itinerary or change in duration of a client’s holiday. If advised of a major change before departure, the client will have the choice of accepting changes (at additional cost if applicable), purchasing another available tour from the company, or cancelling the tour with a full refund.

Provided that the major change is not as a result of situations outside the company’s control or consolidation, compensation will be paid as follows:

Notification Period Given / Compensation Per Person

More than 30 days: Nil

14-30 days:  €40

Less than 14 days: €50

  • Force Majeure. We regret we cannot accept liability or pay any compensation where the performance or prompt performance of our contractual obligations is prevented or affected by reasons of circumstance amounting to “force majeure”. In these conditions “force majeure” means any event which we the supplier of services in question could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. Such events include war or threat of war, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, fire or adverse weather conditions, epidemics or health risks and all similar events outside our control.
  • The company reserves the right to cancel a tour in any circumstances but will not cancel a tour less than 4 weeks before departure except for “force majeure”, consolidation, or the client’s failure to pay the final balance. Unless the client fails to pay the final balance, the company, upon cancellation will return all monies paid to it, or offer the client an alternative holiday of comparable standard if available (if less expensive than original we will refund the difference, if more expensive, the client will have to pay the difference). Compensation will not be payable (1) where the company is forced to cancel as a result of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which we could not have avoided even with all due care or (2) where an insufficient number of people book the clients chosen holiday and we notify we are cancelling for this reason not less than 28 days before departure. In all cases our liability is limited to offering the above choices and the compensation payments (where applicable) set out in clause 11. No compensation is payable if we notify you of cancellation more than 8 weeks before departure. We cannot be held responsible for any costs or expenses you may have as a result of cancellation.
  • Client’s bookings are accepted on the understanding that they appreciate the risks inherent in adventure travel and that they undertake the tours featured in our programme at their own volition. Our obligations, and those of any suppliers providing any service or facility involved in any travel arrangements you book with us, are to provide services and facilities with reasonable care and skill. Facilities will be provided to the realistic minimum standard recommended by the regulatory authorities responsible.

Bike Hire: The equipment including all accessories supplied is let out on hire. The equipment remains the property of the company and the Client will not sell, hire out or otherwise part with the possessions thereof.

The Client undertakes not to misuse the equipment and to return it with all accessories in the same condition as when received (ordinary wear and tear accepted). The company shall be entitled to charge the client for any damages caused to equipment during the period of hire. In event of a breakdown, other than a result of the Clients misuse, the company will use its best endeavours to repair or procure repair of the equipment.

The company will not be liable for any damage or loss whatsoever, through breakdown or other defect in the equipment or other circumstances beyond the company’s control. The Client shall indemnify the company with respect to all costs, claims, expenses and demands suffered or incurred which arise directly or indirectly out of the use of the equipment during the period of hire. The company reserves the right to charge the client for partial or full settlement of any claim. In the event of the equipment being stolen or lost, the company reserves the right to call upon the client to indemnify the company the replacement of the equipment. However, should the equipment subsequently be returned in a satisfactory condition, the company undertakes to refund the clients indemnity within 14 days.

The Client will ensure that the equipment is adequately secured when not in use, will not use the equipment whilst under the influence of drink or drugs and will immediately notify the company in the event of breakdown or loss of equipment.

  • Clients bringing their own bikes do so on the proviso that their equipment is in a suitable condition for participation in a tour. Responsibility for maintenance of bicycles brought by clients rests with the client. The company will endeavour to accommodate such clients, but cannot guarantee that correct tools and spares will be available, given the wide range of possibilities that exist.
