2024 ADVENTURES

Time for travel book your 2024 adventure – limited places remaining, don’t just take our word for it…, our cycling and walking tour of vietnam was amazing. we saw so much and had so many experiences in the time we had that it is hard to believe it all. the guides thang, bao and trung were so well organised that it all went like clockwork with the great drivers who were always there to pick us up right on time.from the floating markets to the great restaurants to the home visits, cooking class, coffee making experience, kayaking, boat ride at tam coc- it was all fantastic.the guides were very knowledgeable about the various parts of the country that we visited but they were also generous in sharing thir own and their families experiences of life in vietnam over past generations. they are also very passionate about their love of their country.the accommodation and food was great. we loved experiencing the delicious vietnamese food.the itinerary worked well and was flexed in some cases to better fit the circmstances. the managing of 2 parallel groups (cyclists and walkers) was done well where we joined up at various points to do joint activities., thang and trung were excellent guides. from the moment we initially met the lads to the last day of the tour, they were always there. they were so helpful, it was wonderful to know everything was taken care of. we learnt a lot of local knowledge from them.we would have no hesitation recommending others to join the vietnam essentials tour. thank you, trip was fantastic from start to finish. great team - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. fabulous way to get to see and know a country. would do it again in a heartbeat thanks grasshopper, the grasshopper shikoku tour is a trip of a lifetime. cycling through local villages and beautiful landscapes with a fun group and thoughtful guides created the perfect combination of culture and activity. being relatively new to cycling, i found some of the mountain climbs to be especially rewarding and memorable. i was impressed with the routes grasshopper designed, taking lesser traveled roads and always making a point to experience local japanese food and culture. the hotels along the way were excellent, with hot springs to help relax after an adventurous day. highly recommend anyone, no matter your fitness level, or whether you're solo or in a group, to join this tour if you can, you won't regret it., we had a fantastic five days with grasshopper in northern laos. we hiked and biked in the most stunning scenery. we stayed in outstanding hotels. we spent a day on a boat going down the mekong. it was an amazing experience and our guide looked after us beautifully., having never been on a grasshopper tour before i was unsure what to expect. the experience far exceeded my expectation with a nice mix of cycling and culture. exploring small quiet roads was a delight which typically included stunning views. all your needs were taken care of as a van follows you around with your gear, plenty of food and drink as well as the usual cycling tools. we also go to visit temples, experience paper making and even made soba noodles. the accommodation was a mix of traditional japanese as well as more international-style hotels all of which were very clean and pleasant to sleep in. the food was japanese and delicious although the breakfasts became a little monotonous. it would have been nice to have cereal and a good cup of coffee or two occasionally. our guides were fantastic and lots of fun. nothing was too much trouble for them and they were constantly making sure the bikes were clean and ready for use. i brought my own bike and they even cleaned this for me - how good is that i would highly recommend this tour and would happily sign up for another grasshopper trip in the future., shikoku waratah’s tour september/october 2022 a great tour organised once again through adam - my sixth with adamshikoku is a wonderful place to cycle - spectacular scenery, mainly quiet “car free” roads. however there were some long hills- the great scenery. and the food was fantastic. the local team - led by norman (an american who lives in japan - fluent japanese), reiko his wife and the expert mechanic and dale were the best team i’ve had anywhere. nothing was too much trouble everything just “happened” we had a great group of riders - all of us only knowing an half or less of the other riders; but the group just « clicked »., this was my third time with grasshopper and i cannot recommend them enough - every member of the team - from those helping with bookings to the exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate guides, to partners (accommodation, restaurants) is amazing. if you want a memory that's personalised and special, grasshopper adventures is the right team to deliver it., wow, what an amazing experience sri lanka is a special place and experiencing it from a bicycle was just awesome., booking a trip with grasshopper means you can be sure you're going to get passionate knowledgeable guides, great food, caring attention, comfortable accommodation and a trip that will provide wonderful memories you will share over and over again. you'll also meet friendly, interesting people, some of whom will become friends for life., see more reviews >>  , come and experience, grasshopper style.

Asia Cycling Tours

Discover the best of asia by bike, or e-bike.

You don’t have to be a keen cyclist to enjoy a cycling trip in Asia. All that you need is reasonable fitness and a love for exploring the world under your own steam.

Asia is synonymous with cycling as a form of travel. The ability to absorb the landscapes from two wheels, explore the backroads that few travellers ever see. The flexibility to hop off your bike when you want to take a picture or to share a laugh or smile with the local people, all combine to ensure that a cycling trip in Asia is one of the most authentic ways to experience the region.

Vietnam is one of the most popular Asian cycling destinations on offer. However, the various islands of Japan , the rarely travelled rural village roads of India or Sri Lanka , while the close proximity of countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam allow for amazing cross border itineraries.

WHAT OUR ASIA CYCLING TRIPS INCLUDE

Our quality Asia cycling trips provide you with everything you will need from well maintained bikes, support vehicles, bike mechanics and comfortable accommodations to most meals.

NERVOUS ABOUT FITNESS: HIRE AN ELECTRIC-BIKE

If you're a little nervous about your fitness, ask us about hiring an electric bike on our many China, Vietnam and Japan cycling tours. See below for more details on our e-bike options.

MULTI-ACTIVITY ADVENTURES

If you prefer not to commit to a pure cycling trip, many of our active trips in Asia are multi-activity adventures, trips that combine cycling with walking, and even paddling.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH CYCLING IN ASIA

In 1978, we were the first adventure travel company to offer cycling experiences in India and China. Later, in 19190, we operated the first ever Vietnam cycling trip. We have operated cycling trips in Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and many other destinations within India.

POPULAR ASIA CYCLING DESTINATIONS

Wherever you choose to cycle in Asia you can be assured that it will be led by a passionate local guide who wants to provide you with a memorable insight into their country. Check out some of the most popular cycling destinations in Asia below.

Colourful Cycling Holidays in Asia

Relaxed guided bicycle tours throughout south east asia, china & mongolia.

Painted Roads specialises in relaxed, fun, small group guided bicycle tours in a variety of destinations in South-East Asia, China, and Mongolia. As well as sharing with you our love of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos we also have an in-depth knowledge of some less-well known cycling holiday destinations so we hope you will also join us on one of our unforgettable cycle tours of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guanxi in China, Taiwan, Sri-Lanka, or the wonderful open spaces of Mongolia.

All of our cycling holidays feature western tour leaders and local guides. Our philosophy is based around offering an intimate exploration by bicycle of personally crafted tours through stunning rural locales in destinations around Asia.  Our  tours include comfortable accommodation, delicious local cuisine, a support vehicle and minimal transfers. We want your biking holiday with us to be a truly memorable experience for all the right reasons so we place as much emphasis on post-cycling relaxation, convivial company, and an apres-ride beer in a warm Asian sunset as the biking itself.

A superb tour through a fascinating region, brilliantly led by David and Phong. Both clearly love what they do and this translates into an exceptional level of service. The tour itself is full of surprises, diverse ethnic villages, the awesome rocky plateau and the beauty of the rice terraces. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend it to anyone who thinks they have “done” South East Asia. Chris on Northeast Vietnam

China - Yunnan

Featured Bicycle Tour: China - Yunnan

From the Tibetan town of Shangri-La, across a 3700-metre pass, through one of the world's deepest gorges to an unspoilt town from the ancient tea trading route. Onwards across a mountain range leading to one of China's biggest freshwater lakes. And hence to the capital of the Bai minority people, Dali Old Town. This cycling epic offers more of China in two weeks of pedalling that many people would ever imagine existing. Featuring epic landscapes and a real sense of adventure this tour has become, quite rightly, our most popular.

Riding through Lao is an opportunity to see a vast cultural difference from Western influence to the fundamental quality of life. Even though you have cell coverage throughout the county, you will see the simplicity of villages and people living off the land with basic resources. I see a great opportunity for Lao to grow in tourism; it is great to see it now, and I hope to return in 5 years to see what I expect to be positive changes. It was a privilege to see and interact with all the friendly people of Lao.  Wally Dumont on Northern Laos

10 of the Best Cycling Holiday Routes in Asia

10 of the Best Cycling Holiday Routes in Asia

Seeing a country by bike is one of the most rewarding, connected, tactile and thrilling ways of getting to know a new destination. Cycling to be green, to get fit or just for a new challenge in life, combining sport and travel could be a completely life changing experience. And in the fascinating continent of Asia , with its exotic landscapes and great variety of cultures, this is a truly wonderful way of exploring.

Whether you’re a pro rider or a cycling novice, travelling by bike can be done at your own pace and there are no rules about how many times you stop along the way. There are countless trails to suit different riding levels, but here are our top 10 cycling holiday routes  in Asia …

1). Silk Road

The famous Silk Road is made up of a network of trade routes which were established during the Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) when silk traders travelled to and from different parts of Asia. The routes connect East and West Asia, even extending to parts of Europe, and was used by many traders, monks and soldiers in the past. Today, these ancient routes have become popular with travellers wanting to trek or cycle. If you’re looking for both a physical and mental challenge, we would recommend cycling the historic Silk Road.

There are three main routes of the Silk Road in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region: the northern route which covers the Tianshan Mountains, Hami, Urumqi and Yining; the central route which takes you westward to the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, passing through Ruoqiang, Turpan , Korla, Kuqa, Aksu and Kashgar ; and the southern route which takes you around the Kunlun Mountains, Hetian, Yechang, Shache and Kashgar . All three routes offer the most wonderful views of China ’s untouched countryside.

2). Qinghai Lake

The route around the vast Qinghai Lake in  China  will take 4 to 7 days of cycling. The total distance is over 220 miles and runs clockwise from Heimahe Town, finishing at Huangyuan County. The beautiful alkaline lake, which is said to change colour depending on season or time of day, is located in the culturally Tibetan area of China and has been a sacred lake to the Tibetan people for many centuries.

In terms of difficulty, at a steady and comfortable pace this route can be completed with ease. Due to the Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race, which has taken place every July since 2002, the roads are well maintained and very easy to ride on. The asphalt road makes an excellent smooth surface, so you won’t be up against rough terrain.

For the best weather and the clearest views of the peaceful lake, visit during summer. The best months for cycling are July and August , but remember to travel with layers as the temperatures can drop dramatically in the evenings.

3). Angkor Wat

Biking around the Angkor Wat temple complex is one of the best ways of exploring the lesser known wonders of this incredible archaeological site. Angkor, set in the northern Siem Reap province of  Cambodia  is one of the most important sites of historical significance, one which also carries a painful past, and it spreads across almost 250 square miles of land. The most famous temples include Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm Wat (which featured in the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie) and the Preah Khan Temple. But there are also some lesser known temples such as Baksei Chamkrong, Banteay Srei, Preah Ko and the 10th century East Mebon structure, which are all really worth exploring and can be easily reached on bike.

If you’re not planning on taking your own bike, you can rent a bicycle from the old market area in Siem Reap for just a few dollars a day. But remember, prices are often not fixed so be sure to haggle.

4) Mekong River

The spectacular Mekong River is as much a gem of Cambodia as its temples; it is the 12th longest river in the world (and 7th longest in Asia ) and stretches over 2,700 miles through China , Myanmar (Burma) , Laos , Thailand , Cambodia and Vietnam .

If you’re cycling along the 50 mile stretch of river in Cambodia , you will be able to find bicycle rentals such as CRD Tours (which is run by the Cambodian Rural Development Charity). However, you’ll be hard pressed to find sufficient cycling equipment and safety gear – so make sure you bring these with you or source them elsewhere.

The best time to cycle the Mekong River is in January and February when temperatures are comfortable and dry. If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to ride is in September or October but this is typically the rainy season so be sure to bring lightweight waterproofs.

5). Himalayas

The small landlocked country of  Bhutan , nestled in the eastern foothills of the Himalayas, is packed with mind-blowing scenery and unspoiled wildlife. Although small in size, when it comes to natural sights and dramatic mountain views, the Bhutan certainly doesn’t disappoint. Still reasonably undiscovered by the clutches of tourism, a journey to the Himalayas in Bhutan will feel completely off the beaten path.

6). National Highway 1

Vietnam ’s National Highway 1, connecting the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon), is the most popular cycling route in  Vietnam . Disconnected by warfare for many years, it has now become a famous trail for those who are looking for a physical challenge with great rewards. The road also acts as a symbol of unity for the Vietnamese people. However, the route is now crowded and runs through many built up areas. If you’re in search of some cultural and spiritual exploration, then we’d recommend the northern stretch of the Ho Chi Minh trail from Ngoc Lac to the Hai Van Pass in Da Nang .

This route was originally an elaborate web of jungle trails linking the country’s North and South during the Vietnam War. You will need a minimum of 10 days to complete the 500 mile stretch of road, but we would definitely recommend allowing a few extra days giving you enough time to explore each stopover. There are also a few steep hill climbs so be sure to carry plenty of water.

7). East Coast Park

This cycle route is a city trail with a difference; combining the convenience of the city with the beauty of beach and coastal scenery, there’s no other bike route like it in the world. If you’re looking for a gruelling life challenge though, this isn’t for you. The relaxed family atmosphere of East Coast Park and the coastal road is designed for a leisurely, laissez-faire approach to cycling. So, if you’re a beginner and don’t want to tackle anything too challenging just yet, this is the perfect cycling route to ease you into some longer rides.

Ending at Changi Village, you will find a huge selection of food hawkers and food halls to satisfy your appetite. For that well-earned meal after your 4- 5-hour cycle tour, head to Changi Village Food Centre where there will be a fantastic choice of street food stalls.

8) Bangkok to Phuket

Bangkok and Phuket are must visit destinations in  Thailand , both with their own unique charm. Cycling from one to the other will take you around 10 days and covering around 523 miles of stunning coastline, there will be plenty of beach stopovers. For the perfect combination of bike and beach, make sure you allow yourself a couple of extra days to relax and wind down at some of the resorts dotted along the coast.

THAILAND - Orient Express view rice pickers

9). Serpentine Road and Jaipur

The Pink City of Jaipur is located in  North India  and has earned its name from its lime plastered buildings which fill the cityscape with a deep pink colour in bright daylight. Founded in 1727 by the Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, Jaipur is one of the country’s distinctive ‘planned cities’, and today it stands out as a unique place with pristine streets built with the highest levels of orderliness. Overlooked by the Nag Tibba Mountain, Jaipur is a stunning city best captured on foot or by bicycle.

The winding Serpentine Road is a steady ascent into the mountains and from the top, you can catch the most amazing views of the city. Jaipur centre itself can also be explored on a biking tour; ride through the colourful bazaars and see the city’s major architectural sites including the Albert Hall Museum, the Water Palace, the Maharajah’s cenotaphs, and the beautiful Marble Carvers’ District.

Jaipur North India 3 (1)

10). Hiroshima's Shimanami Kaido

Shimanami Kaido – also called the Nishiseto Expressway – is one of the most impressive cycle routes in Japan and the world, but the beauty of this incredible toll road is that it can be completed in just a matter of hours. Just under 40 miles, this uncomplicated stretch of road connecting Honshu to the island of Shikoku makes for a smooth, easy ride; perfect for beginners, younger riders and families.

This route offers amazing coastal scenery and you will pass over the 6 islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima, Omishima, Hakatajima and Oshima before finishing up at the tranquil and laid-back Shikoku.

When renting bikes, there are two rental options available along the expressway. The first, and the most popular, has a large number of terminals across the cycle route and is around 500 Yen per day with a 1,000 Yen deposit per bike. The second, available with The Giant Store Imabari, costs between 4,000 and 7,000 Yen per day for high-tech bicycles and there are only 2 terminals across the whole route.

Wow this was a great tour that covers the shear electricity of Bangkok on a back alleys and little known shortcuts. Few tourists will see how the population lives up close on two wheels on an intricut route. Then ride the rails like the locals do on the friendly trains. I have come to expect excellence from SpiceRoads and the Chiang Mai to Bangkok trip did not disappoint me. The guides -Aum, Moo and Rin- were excellent. The coffee shops and food stops they picked were outstanding. The evening meals were a reminder that Thai food tastes best in Thailand. The hotels were above average. Great tour and fantastic guide (Tun). Very much an adventure/activity focused tour, so lots of exercise with the occasional cultural experience to break it up. The trekking element was great for those in good shape, however was a challenge for those in 'average' and below condition, although to be fair rain was a factor in the trail conditions. I would suggest the trip description better explain the level of difficulty and fitness expectations. I would also suggest limiting the treks to half days only. As a final critique I would also add the first night in the village home-stay had very 'basic' washroom facilities, lighting and outdoor shelter in the communal area. Would suggest improvements here or an alternate stay location. The few critiques aside the overall trip was well organized and managed by our guide Tun, combined with a great bunch of fellow travelers.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Day trips in Russia

Newcomers can test their “strength” on a one-day trip – the roads should not be complicated and the distances should not be too long. For first-time riders, study the route carefully, taking into account not only the length of the road, but also the conditions: there should be no long climbs and no high mountain passes. The flatter the road, the better. Do not ride close to crowded and busy large traffic lanes, even if conditions permit.  Also, make sure carry your Russian invitation letter with your visa .

Route: Levutov – Pavlovsky town

Distance: 65 km

From Reutov (metro station “Novokosino”) outside Moscow, via Saltykovsk, Zheleznodorozhny, Fedurnovo, then turn to Biserovo, to Staraya Kupavna, then to Elektrostal via Ivashevo, and finally to Pavlovsky Posad via Subbotino, the intercity electric train This is a good route for newcomers to the town of Pavlovsky Posad (Vokhna or Pavlovsky Posad station).

This route is good for beginners: the terrain remains almost unchanged throughout the route. It’s mainly asphalt, but it’s quiet, with a rural landscape and few cars. Also, there are many intercity train stations along the way – if you get tired, you can take the train back to Moscow.

cycling tours asia

For the uninitiated, there are plenty of suitable roads around Moscow. The entire Moscow region is dotted with railway lines, so it is not necessary to make a circular route. You can take an intercity train to one station and back from another. There are many convenient route options around most Russian cities. You can make your own route, or take the advice of experienced travelers and use an already prepared route map.

Two-day trips in Russia

If you can travel 60-70 km per day, it’s no problem and you’ll be able to ride for two days. First of all, you need to solve your overnight problem: will you stay in a hotel, borrow a private house or pitch your own tent? Be sure to take the weather into account and take extra things that will keep you warm or heated.

When choosing your route, add some “hills” on the way, but not too steep.

Keep an eye on your bike. Ideally, it should be carefully checked and tested two days before departure; if you don’t know much about bike parts, you should have a full “car check” at a good mechanic’s shop to remove all faults in time.

Route: ride along Nizhny Novgorod and rest on the Volga

Distance: 140 km

This is a self-guided route with picturesque Volga forests, where you will have to pitch a tent on the road overnight. You don’t have to think about the schedule of electric trains or buses, even if you are delayed on the way, don’t worry.

From Nizhny Novgorod, you will pass through the town of Bor (you can cross the Volga by cable car). Next, head to Ivanovskoye. On the way, note the unique, interlocking bi-level railroad: it is no longer in use, but the original structure is still there. Then go in the direction of Yurasovo, where you will turn to Maloye Utkino, then to Beryozovka, to Vypolzovo, then to the Volga River, to Apraksino, passing through the hill fortress with its ancient earthen embankment. Hillfort, which retains its ancient earthen berm.

cycling tours asia

After that, follow Orlovo, Belkino, Yamnovo, Zavrazhnoye, Selishi. After passing through Zhukovka, you can go straight through the forest to the bank of the Volga River and find a place to pitch your tent.

The next day, go in the direction of Pumra, then through Vagankovo, Orekhovo, Markovo, turn left at Matveyevka, go to Vatoma, then through Put’kovo and back to the banks of the Volga, then to the town of Pol, and then to Nizhny Novgorod.

There are many suitable two-day rides in the Volga Valley, around the Voronezh region, around the cities along the Golden Ring and in the Crimean steppe.

Multi-day rides in Russia

Riding for several days in a row is a very serious matter and you need to be physically prepared. For the first time, choose a route that is not too difficult and not extreme, because riding a few days in a row is not at all the same as riding 100 km in a week. Please estimate that it is more comfortable to travel 70-80 km per day on the plains and with much less hills.

Check to see if there are any settlements along the way – it depends on whether you’ll be carrying a lot of food, or if you can buy all your food along the way. But whenever and wherever you go, make sure you have drinking water on you. Please do not forget to constantly replenish your supplies and have an emergency reserve – about 1.5 liters of water per person.

Route: “Crimean coast: from Kerch to Alushta”

Distance: 270 km , 5-7 days

We have intentionally divided the trip on this route into several days, as it depends a lot on your fitness and desire to visit the sights – which will be seen on the way, and quite a lot of them. There will be some mountain passes – if you feel tired as you pass them, it is always possible to set up camp early and prepare for an overnight stay. Almost the entire road runs along the coastline. If you don’t want to pitch a tent, you can easily find a place to spend the night in the resort.

Get off the ferry to Kerch and head directly to the Feodossia steppe. Pass through the town of Ordzhonikidze and head to Koktebel. Be prepared for a long and tiring uphill climb. If you don’t want to tire yourself out that much, then sacrifice some of the scenic views and take a different route – along the Simferopol highway.

From Koktebeli there is a difficult mountain road leading to Sudak. The strongest will can cycle to the town of “Novyi Svit” in one day, while the rest of the people should go to the village of Morske and then to Alushta via Rybache and Malorichens’ke. From Alushta, you can take a bicycle and a trolleybus to Simferopol, from where you can return by plane or return to Kerch by bus or taxi.

  • Cycling tours in Asia

Japan’s silent bamboo forests, a highland tea plantation in Sri Lanka, sleepy Vietnamese fishing villages and crumbling hill forts on the road to Pushkar – it’s fair to say Asian cycling tours are a long way from your typical Spin class. The beauty of these cycling trips is that they get you (literally) off the beaten path, away from the major tourist traps, and onto the road less travelled. There are village homestays, sizzling street food crawls, historic temples and postcard-worthy beaches, with some jaw-dropping rides in between. Our Asian cycling guides are all lycra-clad locals – so you know you’re getting an expert cyclist, plus the lowdown on the best Pad Thai in Bangkok or Kyoto’s coolest karaoke bar. Classic Intrepid…on two wheels. That’s an Asia cycling tour.

Our Asia cycling Top 5

Cycle through the bamboo forests in Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

A cyclist could spend a happy couple of weeks in Kyoto, waking up to steaming bowls of miso soup and riding the days away in the bamboo forests of Arashiyama or the tree-lined tracks alongside the Katsura River. Nights could be spent whisky bar-hopping in Gion or trying to spot geishas in labyrinth alleys of Ponto-chō. On our Japan cycling tour, we’ll set you up in a traditional ryokan (tatami matts and everything) and lead you out on some simply stunning day rides up to the temples of Tenryuji and Ryoanji. After we’ve explored Kyoto from edge to edge, we’ll set off on a ride to the ancient capital of Nara, stopping for a little matcha tea by the iconic Nagarebashi Bridge.

A family of tigers in Ranthambore national park in India

Ranthambore National Park, India

Of course, there are the classic India highlights (insert the Taj or New Delhi’s iconic Red Fort here), but for something a bit different, we like to ride from the Brahmin town of Bundi to Ranthambore National Park, the old hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Here, we’ll put the bikes aside for a while and go searching for leopards, hyenas, nilgai and Bengal tigers on a 4WD jeep safari. Deep in the jungle, we’ll pay a visit to the old Ranthambore Fort, an overgrown ruin that looks like something straight out of The Jungle Book. Our cycling tours are obviously pretty focussed on the ride, little out-of-the-way stops are great for mixing things up (and giving the legs a rest).

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

A UNESCO Heritage Site, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Rajarata, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth…but how often do you hear about Anuradhapura? It doesn’t pop up in a lot of travel mags, but it’s one of our favourite spots in all of Sri Lanka. And the best way to see it? A guided cycling tour. You’ll spend the day riding beneath enormous dagobas (particularly the white dome of Ruwanweli Saya) and crumbling brick towers reaching for the sky. The ruins are spread over a pretty big area, which is where the bikes come in handy. We’ll cycle around the temples, visit the local museum and stop for a local lunch – maybe some paper-thin Godamba rotis or crispy hoppers topped with curry.

Cycle tour in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Well, more specifically, the coastal highway from Quy Nhon to Nha Trang. It’s one of the most breathtaking rides we’ve found anywhere in the world: a winding road that hugs to sheer granite cliffs as they plunge into the deep blue of the South China Sea. For about 90km, you can look out over distant islands and lagoons, as well as the sand dunes far below. You’ll know you’ve reached Nha Trang when you’re fighting for road space with the scooter drivers on the waterfront promenade and smelling wafting deliciousness like grilled Nem Nuong (fermented pork mince) or hot Bun Cha Ca (a sweet seafood broth with vermicelli noodles). Nha Trang is known as the ‘Cannes of the Orient’, and it makes one heck of an entrance.

A boat off of the coast of a white sand beach in Thailand

Khao Lak, Thailand

Did you hear that? It was the sound of all your muscles relaxing. After a cruisy ride down palm-fringed roads and past smiling locals, you'll make your way down the Andaman Coast to Khao Lak, the beach town of your dreams. Chill out and unwind on the appropriately named White Sand Beach while letting the crystal clear water soothe your sore quads and a fresh coconut quench your thirst. Still feel like you need a little activity? There are loads of beachside routes to cycle in the area.

The best time to cycle in Asia

Cycle Asia with Intrepid Travel

Asking the best time to cycle in Asia is a little like the old 'How long is a piece of string' conundrum: it really depends where you want to go. For Vietnam or Thailand, you really want to get in before the monsoon hits, but also after the summer tourist swarms have departed – April and May are a good bet, the weather and the riding should both be quite pleasant. If you're cycling in Japan, the winter months (December to February) are usually out, but springtime cherry blossoms in April or May will make a stunning backdrop. The southern coast of Sri Lanka can be quite pleasant over December and January, but March is a lovely shoulder month if you're looking to dodge the summer crowds. For more info on Asia's climate (and a few hints on dodging the monsoon) check out our handy guide .
