13 Amazing Things To Do In Danao, Cebu

Danao – a city known for its homemade guns – isn’t the first place that comes into mind when people think of travel destinations in Cebu.  For years, the city of Danao has been overshadowed by the famed South Cebu attractions.  Naïve and close-minded, the younger version of me once thought there weren’t a lot of fun and blissful things to do in Danao, Cebu.

But, guess what? I eventually found out that the city is actually blessed with a wealth of natural wonders and man-made marvels for the intrepid and open-minded explorers. As a matter of fact, it’s today officially one of my go-to local destinations when I badly need a heavy dose of adventure.

From picture-perfect summits to family-friendly resorts, there’s absolutely no shortage of incredible things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Truthfully, I’ve barely scratched the surface, when it comes to exploring Danao, Cebu. Even so, I’ve come up with a few tips and suggestions to help you experience a rocking trip in Danao, Cebu. So, if you’re planning to visit this city, make sure to check out these amazing things to do in Danao, Cebu.

1. Climb Licos Peak

Licos Peak is my personal favorite and no doubt one of the most exciting things to do in Danao, Cebu. Despite its modest elevation and short trail, climbing this unsung mountain can be quite a thrill. With loose soils and a steep trail, getting to the top is an adventure in itself.

You’ll have to scramble, hold on to roots, and even hug trees just to reach the peak.

And, once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning bird’s eye views of the verdant landscapes of Northern Cebu. What’s more, there are plenty of eye-catching and wondrous rock formations at the top.  

After climbing Licos Peak, you may also hike all the way to Lanigid Hill in Liloan, Cebu, to complete a fun-filled hike.

2. Hike Mount Manghilao

No list of the best things to do in Danao, Cebu without the inclusion of its highest peak – Mount Manghilao. Famous for its large wooden cross, this mountain is a pilgrimage site and is stepped in history and mystery. To me, Mount Manghilao is arguably the most mystical and historically interesting mountain in all of Cebu.

Of course, the mountain also boasts breathtaking views, making it one of the best things to do in Danao, Cebu.

On my first visit to Mount Manghilao, I stumbled upon a Danao city local, Angel Hermosilla Delicano, together with her family. And, I really had a blast chatting with these friendly folks.

Not only did they offer us a smorgasbord of delicious food, but they also shared some intriguing facts about the mountain. Furthermore, they gave us a tip that ultimately led us to uncovering a cave in Mount Manghilao.

3. Experience the 120-foot Skydrop at Danasan

For the ultimate thrill and a holy sh!t moment in Danao, experience the heart-pumping Skydrop in Danasan . Trust me, this escapade is mind-blowing and simply one of the most amazing things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Danasan’s Skydrop isn’t, however, for the weak of heart or those who are scared of heights. Keep in mind that you’ll be suspended over 100 feet above the ground. And, when you’re feeling cozy and ready, you can, then, pull the level that triggers the insanely exciting drop.

The drop is unlike anything I’ve experienced. For a second or two, you’ll feel like you’re falling into the ground at a rapid pace. It’s an adrenaline pumping ride that deserves a spot on everyone’s list of things to do in Danao, Cebu.

4. Camp or hike Mount Mago

Looking for chill and not-so crazy things to do in Danao, Cebu? Why not include a hiking or camping trip to Mount Mago to your list of things to do in Danao, Cebu? Famous for its laid-back, serene ambiance and scenic views, Mount Mago is the go-to spot for local adventurers who want to escape the monotony of their daily grind. Additionally, it’s a wondrous mountain that serves as a boundary to three towns in Cebu: Carmen, Tuburan and Danao.

Mount Mago can be also a great introduction to the mountains of North Cebu, especially since it’s a fairly easy hike. From Santican, Danao, you can easily reach the peak or campsite in less than an hour. Honestly, the habal-habal ride from Carmen to Santican, Danao is more challenging than the hike itself.

5. Catch the mesmerizing sea of clouds in Danasan Peak

Want to see something majestic? Then, make sure to include Danasan Peak to your list of places to visit and things to do in Danao, Cebu. Heavenly and surreal, it’s a sight that will leave you speechless and in awe.

The truth is, I didn’t get to see this stunning natural phenomenon on our Danasan exploration. With the weather not on our side, the well-known sea of clouds of Danasan didn’t make an appearance on that day.

But, I know quite a lot of folks who were lucky to witness it. Hopefully, the thick white blankets of nature will reveal itself when you visit Danasan Peak.

6. Chase waterfalls

Danao, Cebu boasts a handful of beautiful and refreshing waterfalls. So far, I’ve only experience the cool waters and beautiful rock formations of Danasan Falls.

And, it was remarkable! From the rejuvenating cool waters to the picturesque scenery, it was beautiful in every way.

I’ve got a couple more waterfalls on my list of attractions and things to do in Danao, Cebu. One day, I’ll have my chance to see and experience these fantastic cascades.

7. A zipline ride with a twist

Danasan Eco Park is home to some of the best and most exciting things to do in Danao, Cebu. And, one of my favorite rides at the park is their zipline ride. Unlike the typical zipline ride, this ride has a wonderful twist: a horseback ride following the zipline ride. Cool, right?

8. Check out Lapos Lapos Cave in Carmen, Cebu

Technically, Lapos Lapos Cave belongs to the municipality of Carmen. Still, it makes a great pit stop following your Mount Mago climb. Set inside Saint Benedict Monastery, this cave wows visitors with its towering Mother Mary statue and humungous rocks. On a sunny day, the natural light shines beautifully on the Glorious Woman of Light. Plus, getting inside the cave entails an exciting hike, thanks to the cave’s huge boulders and sharp rock formations.

9. Unwind at a Danao, Cebu resort

Want to chill like a boss? Need a break, but don’t know what to do in Danao, Cebu? The city has a host of cool and awesome resorts, including Coco Palms Resort, El Salvador Resort and Spa, Marick Beach Resort and Danao Intosan Resort. Not to mention, Danasan Eco Park has superb accommodations with access to an infinity pool.

While in Danao, you might also want to check out Carmen’s world-famous Cebu Safari Park. Billed as a world-class wildlife sanctuary, this park is home to countless of healthy animals from all over the world. Here, you get to see tigers, different bird species, leopards, orangutans, zebras, giraffes and a whole lot more. Moreover, the park has recreational activities, Instagram-worthy gardens and lively shows. The way I see it, the park has everything you need for a fun-filled day out with the whole family.

11. Try Danasan’s bike zipline

Still on the lookout for more crazily exciting things to do in Danao, Cebu? You might want to try this extraordinary bike ride in Danasa! It’s fun, safe and a super cool way to see the verdant hills and landscapes of North Cebu.

12. Scale Mount Lantawan

The first time I laid eyes on Mount Lantawan, I knew I’d be scaling it someday. With its dragon-like shape, it’s a pretty visually appealing mountain when viewed from Mount Manghilao. A year later, my friends and I ventured into Lantawan and were treated to some lovely nature views. To make things even better, getting there was also a rather thrilling experience. We got scars and bumps along the way, but at the end day, it was such a memorable and fascinating nature trip. For me, it’s truly one of the best and free offbeat things to do in Danao, Cebu.

13. See the largest cross in Cebu

Yes, it’s in Compostela, but since it’s located near Licos Peak, you might also include this attraction to your Danao, Cebu travel itinerary. Standing at least 30 feet, this cross impresses its visitors with its sheer size. As an added bonus, it also offers great views of Compostela and Danao.

Danao Coco Palms Resort

Danao Coco Palms Resort is one of the most recommended resorts in Northern Cebu. It is located in Brgy. Sabang, Danao.

They have cottages for day use and of course, comfortable rooms for overnight use. You can simply choose between a standard room or deluxe. The infinity pool is available ONLY for guests who check-in. On the other hand, day trippers are also welcome to use the other pool -- and should wear proper swimming attire. Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish

Tomas Villanueva was an Augustinian friar and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Valencia, Spain between the years 1544-1555.

Sto. Tomas Villanueva Parish in Danao, named after him, is one of the oldest churches in Cebu. Founded in 1942, Sto. Tomas Villanueva Parish served as a hiding place for the locals during the Second World War. 

The church was badly damaged after World War II, but has since been reconstructed. The reconstruction was completed in the year 1985. The inaugural blessing of Sto. Tomas Villanueva and Solemn Consecration of the Marble Altar of Sacrifice was in December 23, 1985.

Entry Point is in ORMOC PORT .

• From the port, walk to Ormoc City Terminal near the Ormoc Public Market/2go Express ticketing.
• Then, ride a tricycle going to PUNTA PORT. Be sure to inform the driver that you will hop off at PUNTA PORT for Camotes. Fare is PHP 1 0.00 – PHP 20.00 . Travel time is about 8 minutes .
• At Punta Port, ride the KGC Ferry bound to Poro, Camotes. The fare is about PHP 300.00 . Travel Time is about 1hr 50mins .
• At Camotes, hail a motorcycle, tricycle, or just rent a ride for transportation to your destination.

✓ OPTION 2 (BY BOAT W/ BUS/VAN)

Entry Point is in CEBU PIER 4 via HILONGOS .

• From Pier 4, ride the Slow Boats (Roble Shipping Lines or Gabisan Lines) & Fast Boat (MV Superjoy) bound for Hilongos. LAKE DANAO CAMOTES

Lake Danao Camotes is one of the biggest lakes in the Philippines.  It is located at Pacijan Island in a town called San Francisco.  This 650-hectare lake (Wikipedia) has two islets, Crocodile and Snake. The top photo shows one of these islets.

Lake Danao Camotes is run by the local government. There are cottages for rent.  There is a convenience store, swimming pool, and a mini zoo that houses mostly monkeys. 

I think this Lake Danao is the most visited one here in Camotes because one can do so much activity that cannot be done in any nearby tourist spot.

What To Do at Lake Danao Park

• Sunbathing.
• Eat lunch on the lakeside.
• You can conduct your Training and Seminar-Workshops here.  Please make an arrangement with the management.
• Tour of the Lake. (Rent a kayak or a boat)
• Swimming. Just is careful when you swim in the lake because the spot may look shallow but the seaweeds may shock you and gives you a feeling of depth.
• The park can be an ideal place for family bonding, family reunions, alumni gathering, and others
•  For environmentalists, the park can be an ideal place to conduct research.   
•  Kids will enjoy the kiddie’s pool. 
• Sakanaw or a cruise that will take you around the lake while eating a delicious lunch or having a drinking session.

Lake Danao in Camotes: Largest Lake in the Visayas

Lake Danao is probably one of the most spectacular and breath-taking tourist attractions of Camotes Islands in Cebu , Philippines . It is the largest and longest lake in the Visayas formed like a number eight (8), similar to the body of a guitar. It is really like a guitar when you’re there because you will be serenaded by the natural breeze of the water, the singing birds and the swish of the trees.

Lake Danao occupies an estimated 649 hectare with a couple of islets about 600 square meters named Crocodile Islet and Snake Islet in the south part of the lake. It is bounded in 6 out of 15 barangays in the island of Pacijan which is now known as San Francisco or “San Fran” to most locals. Its shoreline ranges from rocky to soft mud. The types of soil are soft, silty and sandy. The depth of water ranges from 0.5 meters to 30 fathoms. The water at Lake Danao has a pH of 8.5 to 9.0 while salinity ranges from 0.0 to 0.5 ppt. The lake water is free from pollutants. It has no definite inlet and outlet but it is presumed that a subterranean spring supplies water to the lake.

The water of Lake Danao is generally clear and locals take a dip during mornings and late afternoon. Because of the buildup of mud and weeds, one will assume that the depth of the water is shallow. But when you ask the locals, they will say that it’s deep and never try touching the ground or you will end up full of mud and weeds. The color of the waters of Lake Danao is a combination of green and blue because of the reflection of trees and plants surrounding the lake and the sky up above.

Fishing using an outrigger boat is one of the things locals (and even tourists) can enjoy at Lake Danao . Swimming is allowed to tourists as long as they borrow a life jacket from the authorities.

Lake Danao is located 20 to 30 minutes away from Santiago Bay, the prime beach resort of Camotes . It can be accessed going to the west part of Pacijan Island near Union and Campo. A big signage on the corner is visible enough for one to know that it is the road going to Lake Danao . It can be accessed by tourists in two different locations, Lake Danao Park and Green Lake Park. If you want to see the full length and landscape view of Lake Danao , you might want to visit Arqui’s Viewing Deck for you to be astonished.

Danao Travel Guide

This Philippines city is in the Cebu City greater metropolitan area. It isn’t likely to land on tourists’ radars except as a minor transportation junction. Recent growth has revitalized the city and shaken off old notoriety.

A booming firearms industry began here in the 20th century, and running alongside it was a vein of corruption. Things changed, and today’s leading industrial player is an electronics factory based out of Japan .

The only time tourists are likely to find themselves in Danao is after landing at the seaport. In most cases, it makes sense to head straight for Cebu City where the hospitality scene is well-established. Those who choose to linger in Danao will glimpse candid Filipino life.

Getting There & Away

The national highway connects directly to Cebu City, which is 20 miles away and can be reached in 30 to 45 minutes. The airport in Cebu City is well-connected to destinations all over Asia and to cities across the archipelago including Manila (1 hour). The Danao Seaport is used for connections to the Camotes Islands (2 to 4 hours).

Danao Seaport is a gateway to the beautiful Camotes Island in the province of Cebu . The port is approximately two hours away from Cebu City and another two hours boat ride to Camotes Island.

NEED TO KNOW

Danao Seaport serves as an inter-island passenger and vehicle transportation port (RoRo).

It serves the City of Danao and its surrounding area. It is located in the city with just 700 meters distance from the center of the city or approximately 4 minutes with light traffic. 

A variety of different kinds of ships are available for passenger journeys ranging from pump boats & fastcrafts for short journeys to ferries & ships for longer journeys.

The following is what you need to know when using a seaport and/or ferry in the Philippines.

• Tickets for long journeys are usually booked ahead of time while tickets for short journeys can be purchased at the port right before the departure.  Space is limited and is on a First-Come-First-Served basis. 
• It is required for passengers to present their valid ID upon check-in.  No ID to present, no check-in. 
• Tickets are usually non-transferable.  Presented valid ID should match the passenger’s name as encoded on the ticket.
• At least 30 minutes before departure time is required for passengers to check-in.
• To check-in, pre-printed tickets or tickets bought at the port must be presented together with the check-in slips.
• Passengers may be required to pay in cash local taxes such as terminal fee and environmental fee.
• All passengers must go through security inspection before proceeding to the pre-departure area.
• Each passenger is allowed to bring one (1) hand-carried baggage upon check-in.
• Bringing of pets is allowed if the pets are securely put inside a cage. Upon check-in, a permit from the Bureau of Quarantine must be presented for passengers with pets.  This includes fighting roosters.
• The boats, especially for short journeys, have the tendency not to leave on time and may be late or earlier than scheduled depending on the passenger situation (e.g. boat gets filled immediately).
• Porters, hustlers, and tourist guides are normally seen around passenger ports especially targeting tourists to offer their services.
• Boat trips may be cancelled or rescheduled based on weather conditions and happens often. Make sure your itinerary is flexible enough to accommodate possible delays and changes.
• To protect our oceans, please DO NOT throw garbage into the sea. Dispose of trash in a receptacle provided onboard the vessel.

Lake Danao in Cebu

Nestled in the northern part of Pacijan Island, one of the Camotes Islands in the province of Cebu, Lake Danao is a freshwater with an area of 680 ha. (1,680 ac.), the figure-eight-shaped body of water, is the not only the largest lake in the province but also in the Visayan Region of the country. It is surrounded by six barangays and the poblacion of San Francisco, Cebu.

• Located in Sitio Patabog, in Brgy. Union, the municipal lake park is the place to go for fishing and boating, with spacious area for picnicking. Boats are available for rental in the park or launched from the wharf of the park.

Soli-Soli Festival

• Soli-Soli Festival is an annual festival celebrated in Lake Danao Park every 3rd Sunday of March, coinciding with the town fiesta honoring Saint Joseph, the town's patron saint. Extending throughout the island, the much-anticipated event is an occupational festival injected with religious sentiments of thanksgiving and devotion shown through flamboyant colors, abundant food and fervent choreographed dancing.
• The small island of Pajican has two interior islands of its own - Snake and Crocodile.  The islets can be reached by boats or as part of the scenic lake cruise from Lake Danao Park.
• A 11-mile (18 km) hiking and cycling trail encircles the entire perimeter of the lake.
• Resorts and bungalows for rent are found across the lake region.
