How’s your summer so far? We still have a month to go before school starts (for our kids) and there’s still time to unwind and relax in the beach 🙂

Last weekend, my family went to Cebu for a summer getaway. One of the itineraries I prepared is a day trip to a beach in Mactan Island, Cebu . So I searched the net and emailed resorts which I was interested in. Here are the info I got from them (all pictures are from their official websites):

I wasn’t able to inquire from Shangri-La Mactan (too expensive for us right now) and Imperial Palace Waterpark Cebu but I’m planning to include here their rates after I get a word from them.

Among the resorts I presented above, we chose BE RESORTS MACTAN  for our Mactan beach experience budget-wise and being a newly-built resort. It was also recommended by my sister-in-law and a first cousin who were already able to stay there.

oh, I would recommend adding Best Western Sand Bar Resort, Mactan. Their entrance fee is just 300ps without any required purchase of food. But thats all I know.

Stayed for 3 days out of a 4-night, 6-day itinerary. Conclusion: Costa Bella was even better than the day we spent at J Park! ( ¨̮ ) The price was reasonable, but even aside from that, there was absolutely no regret, and all 4 of us who went together were really satisfied. The facilities, such as the swimming pool and restaurant, were of a reasonable size, clean, and easy to use. The private beach right in front was also well-maintained, and canoe rentals were available for free. The breakfast was delicious, and the swimming pool was divided into deep and shallow areas, with a water slide for fun. I'm so grateful to all the staff for their kindness. I stayed for 3 nights on my first trip to Cebu. Although my flight from Manila was delayed by about 2 hours, the hotel shuttle was waiting for me with a smile. The hotel offers free bicycle rentals to explore the area safely. The pool and beach at the hotel were very clean, and the pool lighting at night was lovely. The restaurant had many options for 400-600 pesos, which was appreciated. The staff were friendly and greeted me often, and many of them were great conversationalists. I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to Cebu!

We booked 3 rooms in celebration for my brother's college graduation. Took a while to find the place, was kind of secluded - but it was all worth it. It is like a little piece of heaven from far end. The check-in and check-out processes are both smooth and fast. Not a lot of manual forms to fill in unlike other hotels. Food is 9. Rooms are rated 10. Not a lot of amenities but one thing uniquely amazing is their little nook of "cultural treasures" with some table tennis on board. There's quite plenty of instruments that you can explore with. This place got top-notch customer service. The staff is either smiling or greeting you :). They are willing to guide, help and escort the elders to their rooms. They are polite in answering queries on amenities and even polite in asking corrections in case there are discrepancies caused by customers themselves. If you wish to fully enjoy a vacation with peace of mind - this place is highly recommended. A place of class and serenity. Customer service - 11/10. Please treasure your staff - they are the GEM. We went there for our anniversary. The goal was to be close to the beach and at the same time have fun by the pool and enjot other activities that qe dont normally do. Though the beach was that perfect it was good enough as they offered free paddle board and kayak activities at day time. Day beds and lounge chairs are evenly spread out in the entire resort perfect for just cozying up by the beach or by the pool shaded or ynder rhe sun. They serve good food!!! We had kare kare since it was my favorite Filipino food. We chilled at Luna Bar in the evening, had frozen margarita and pale pilsen for the hubby with chicken croquettes and chorizo and black olives pizza, so yummy. You can also play billiards and darts at the bar for FREE! Their music playlist was very relaxing too. We had a wonderful chill night at Luna Bar. They serve breakfast buffet, spread was not too many but was still good enough as everything on the spread was so good. You have to try their halo halo, super big with legit halo halo ingredients with a scoop of ice-cream and cherry on top! You can go biking, play table tennis and they have sungka which you can use for FREE! Every part of the resort is instagram worthy. Our room was upgraded for FREE we stayed at the premier beachfront room which was very spacious, we had a bath tub and a balcony with a great view of the beach. It was a beautiful ezperience, very worth it

Warm hospitality, contemporary Filipino-Spanish hotel design and accents, mouth-watering tropical drinks and grubs, exciting island activities, and few-steps-away access to the shores – all these and more are what awaits you when you stay at Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, a 37-year-old beachfront hotel in Cebu.

I was so lucky to experience a stay in this beautiful Cebu accommodation during the Department of Tourism’s Region VII’s Outdoor Adventure Trails and Farm Fork Fitness Circuit, which featured places and food for those who love the outdoors and farms.

Hotel Location

Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel is located at Mactan Island in Cebu, about 15 minutes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport and less than an hour from Cebu City. If you’re looking for a hotel near the airport that offers a decent room and more, including the premium amenities experience, this one’s definitely it.

There are several beach clubs, specialty restaurants especially Korean ones, spas, food parks, and more within its vicinity. The area is bustling, but I bet you’d really stay at the hotel because Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel is a wonderful destination packed with things to do and experience.

Arrival Experience

We arrived at the hotel at around 7:00pm, and no other guests were lining up to check in. The whole process was quick and easy overall, but I had to re-confirm some details for our booking at the front desk. The guests also had to leave their IDs which we gladly complied with. I commend that even though it was already nighttime, the staff who helped us carry our luggage cheerfully assisted us.

In the morning and on my way to breakfast at La Marina, the lobby caught my attention with its beautiful ceiling details. The facade of the receiving area looks so elegant.

In no time, we settled in our rooms to freshen up and rest for the night. Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel has 156 rooms, all designed ala Spanish with touches of Filipino which I think adds to its cozy ambiance. As a local tourist, I appreciate that it gives the vibe of a home-away-from-home where you can easily sleep like it’s your own abode. They have seafront view suites, sunset corner rooms, and poolside rooms.

We got a deluxe room with everything one needs for a comfortable stay. It includes a TV, free Wi-Fi access, a working station, towels and toiletries, a safekeeping vault, an iron and stand, complimentary tea and coffee, water, access to facilities, and a delectable buffet breakfast at La Marina. And that’s only the basics – they even give guests free 30-minute use of kayak and stand-up paddle board and complimentary use of bicycles for one hour!

I enjoyed the buffet breakfast at La Marina, one of their restaurants, and even missed it until now! The buffet staff was very attentive to my needs. I love rice porridge or lugaw, and I love to have my own blend of it with condiments and ingredients, which they have all! I am surprised and impressed because not all buffet spreads include this.

I was even more amazed when I asked for chili oil, and the attendant happily got me a ramekin of it. That morning was a bit busy but I observed that they efficiently served and assisted each of the guests.

The food itself was flavorful, good, warm, and freshly made! There were bread, rice, eggs and omelet, fresh juices, pasta, bacon, sausages, and many more. We were seated next to the pancake and waffle station, and I can attest to how each is freshly cooked and quickly ready when a guest asks for one. On the 2nd day of our stay, we were also served Cebu chorizo, one of the many delicacies the province is known for.

Resort Facilities

An overnight stay at Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel would not be enough to be able to try all the things you can do at the resort! They’ve got 2 pools, an L-shaped pool and a free-form pool, both of which would quickly be filled with guests in the afternoon.

The lounge areas are nice spots where you can enjoy basking under the sun or having some cold drinks. The resort also has a mini gym with access upon reservation and the Lema Spa, where you can indulge in some good massages to complete your relaxing stay. A souvenir shop can also be found within the resort, so you can shop for takeaways in case you don’t have much time to go out and look for pasalubong centers.

All good and comfy things must come to an end, and as for our case, our relaxing 2-day stay was finished after the circuit tour. Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel is a hotel you’ll want to return to or extend some more nights at! The check-out process was also smooth, and the staff was consistently helping us until we loaded our things into the car and went to the airport.

We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was very accommodating and helped us whenever we needed it. There is a wonderful spa there, that is good value. The breakfast was a nice way to start the day. We enjoyed snorkling in the protected bay. One day it was cloudy, but one day the water was extremely clear and there was quite a bit to see and enjoy.

The booking was a treat for our (my siblings and I) Aunties. It was our token of appreciation. I had liaised with the hotel through their reservation email direct rather than via booking.com I find it was more efficient. We had made a few requests which were accommodated to the best that they can. My sisters and I sincerely appreciated the service rendered by everyone during their stay. I will definitely book again. x

Several things in Costabella have changed due to the severe damage of the super typhoon that struck across Visayas but most of you know and love definitely can still be realized. Changed to better existing standards while not forgetting our genuine, warm and caring service. To set your expectations, our The Boardwalk is not available until further notice. It drove us to despair that it was all ruined. There are plans of reconstruction however there is no time period yet.

Our neighboring property near the West Wing, has an ongoing construction. Work is done daily from 8:00 AM to 17:00 PM. The West Wing is where our Premiere Deluxe poolside and Seafront Suites are located. We hope you understand that we have no hold over developments of our nearby properties. Please bear with us.

Discover the incredible world of via ferrata on a unique adventure to  Creste di Costabella, Italy . On this easy trip, friendly for beginners, we’ll combine walks and via ferrata where World War I was fought.

Located between the Biois valley and the San Niccolò valley , Creste di Costabella is a beautiful and historic place with views of the  Pale di San Martino, Catinaccio, Sassolungo and Marmolada . This via ferrata adventure takes place along the crest that connects the Monzoni mountains and the Cima dell’Uomo .

For this adventure, you can choose one or more via ferrata days in this stunning location. We’ll meet at the San Pellegrino Pass and take the  Costabella chairlift . This will take us to  Passo delle Selle . After some walking and via ferrata, passing by some trenches from the First World War, we’ll reach  Ciastel de Costabela for a photographic exhibition from the trenches. Then, we begin the descent.

With moderate technical difficulty, this via ferrata is ideal for those who are starting out. Slowly, I’ll show you the way to become more confident in the mountains.

I was born in the plain in 1983, but as often happens to those who were born there, I have always loved the mountains. I was three years old when I wore my first skis, not knowing that this would become my strongest passion ... Skiing, walking, climbing: it is since I was a child that I go to the mountains, first with my parents and my grandfather and then with my friends.

The degree in forestry science was only the logical consequence of this passion, as well as the beautiful summers spent managing the refuge Capanna Punta Penia in Marmolada (the highest refuge in the Dolomites, on top of the highest mountain in the Dolomites!), which I call "the bus without wheels" and all over the Dolomites! The last step (for now...) was to become a Mountain Guide, to let you experience what the mountain transmits to me! … and to show you the famous " bus without wheels”

Tea and a tour of Balmoral Castle? That will set you back £150

For the first time visitors will be able to see areas of the Scottish castle used by Charles and Camilla – if they have deep pockets

Parts of Balmoral Castle used by the royal family will open to the public for the first time – for those who have deep pockets.

For £100 for an adult ticket – and an extra £50 for those wishing to partake of afternoon tea – guided summer tours of the castle in Aberdeenshire are being offered, limited to 40 people a day and in groups restricted to 10 people.

It is the first time since the castle’s completion in 1855 that visitors will be shown two dining rooms, the drawing room, the page’s lobby and the red corridor, where King Charles greeted Rishi Sunak.

The tour also includes access to the ballroom with a collection of Charles’s watercolour collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham as well as a selection of outfits worn by Charles, Camilla, the late queen and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Previous tours, which will continue, have been of the grounds and gardens with access to the castle itself limited to the ballroom.

The tours, from 1 July until 4 August, before the king and queen arrive for their annual break, are being run for a trial period so estate staff can judge how the fragile building copes with increased footfall.

The £150 a head price tag for tour and high tea makes it the most expensive royal residence for visitors wanting the exclusive experience.

Buckingham Palace, which has long been open to the public during the summer months, charges £95 for an exclusive guided tour away from the crowds, though general summer admission with the masses costs between £32 and £35. Afternoon tea is not included, but at the nearby Ritz, the “afternoon tea experience” costs from £64.

St James’s Palace, which started guided tours in 2022 limited to 30 people, costs £80 for an adult. At the cheaper end of royal residence visits, Windsor Castle offers general adult admission at £30 in advance, while Sandringham House in Norfolk costs £24 and the Castle of Mey, the queen’s mother’s former Scottish home, is £14.50.

The Balmoral Castle website said experienced guides on the interior tour “will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle”.

It adds: “Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today.”

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in China on Thursday for five days of meetings in a nation determined to avoid open conflict with the United States, yet the world’s two largest economies still appear to be hashing out the rules on how to compete against each other.

There are tensions over Chinese government support for the manufacturing of electric vehicles and solar panels, just as the U.S. government ramps up its own aid for those tech sectors. There are differences in trade, ownership of TikTok, access to computer chips and national security — all of them a risk to what has become a carefully managed relationship.

The 77-year-old Yellen, a renowned economist and former Federal Reserve chair, laid out to reporters the issues that she intends to raise with her Chinese counterparts during her five-day visit. Yellen begins her trip in Guangzhou and later moves to Beijing for meetings with finance leaders and state officials. Her engagements will include Vice Premier He Lifeng, Chinese Central Bank Governor Pan Gongsheng, former Vice Premier Liu He, leaders of American businesses operating in China, university students and local leaders.

Yellen, speaking to reporters Wednesday during a refueling stop in Alaska en route to Asia, said her visit would be a “continuation of the dialogue that we have been engaged and deepening” ever since U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in 2022 in Indonesia. She noted that it would be her third meeting with China’s vice premier.

Yellen recently accused China of flooding global markets with heavily subsidized green energy products, possibly undercutting the subsidies the U.S. has provided to its own renewable energy and EV sector with funds provided by the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act. She said she intends to repeat her concerns to Chinese officials that they’re flooding the global market with cheap solar panels and EVs that thwart the ability of other countries to develop those sectors.

“We need to have a level playing field,” Yellen told reporters. “We’re concerned about a massive investment in China in a set of industries that’s resulting in overcapacity.”

Yellen didn’t rule out taking additional steps to counter Chinese subsidies in the green energy sectors, adding, “It’s not just the United States but quite a few countries, including Mexico, Europe, Japan, that are feeling the pressure from massive investment, in these industries in China.”

The Treasury secretary’s travels come after Biden and Xi held their first call in five months on Tuesday, meant to demonstrate a return to regular leader-to-leader dialogue between the two powers. The leaders discussed Taiwan, artificial intelligence and security issues.

The call, described by the White House as “candid and constructive,” was the leaders’ first conversation since their November summit in California, which renewed ties between the two nations’ militaries and enhanced cooperation on stemming the flow of deadly fentanyl and its precursors from China.

Still, it appears to be difficult for the two countries to strike a balance between competition and antagonism.

For instance, Xi last week hosted American CEOs in Beijing to court them on investing in China. Meanwhile, Biden last August issued an executive order that instructed an inter-agency committee, chaired by Yellen, to closely monitor U.S. investment in China related to high-tech manufacturing.

Jude Blanchette, a China expert at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, said, “the Biden administration’s efforts over the last year to stabilize the relationship are clearly working, but the main friction points all remain unresolved and will likely challenge the relationship for the foreseeable future.”

“For the time being, a ‘managed rivalry’ might be the best we can hope for, given the potentially catastrophic consequences of the relationship really going off the rails,” he said.

Yellen last week said China is flooding the market with green energy that “distorts global prices,” and plans to tell her counterparts that Beijing’s increased production of solar energy, electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries poses risks to productivity and growth to the global economy.

China began to broaden its presence in the global economy more than two decades ago, exporting cheap goods that appealed to U.S. consumers at the expense of factory jobs in many of those consumers’ hometowns. Research by the economists David Autor, David Dorn and Gordon Hanson into what’s known as the “China Shock” led to the steady demise of many factory towns, and in some cases led to greater political discontent.

Still, some experts see a benefit in an economic showdown to produce green products.

Shang-Jin Wei, a professor of Chinese business at Columbia University, says that a subsidy war could ultimately help consumers in both countries buy more climate-friendly products, which is an aim of the Biden administration.

“In contrast, a U.S. tariff on EV imports could raise the price of EVs in the U.S. and is therefore counterproductive for the purpose of inducing a green transition.”

Yellen’s trip will run from April 4 to 9. It’s intended as a follow-up to Yellen’s travel to China last July, which resulted in the launch of a pair of economic working groups between the two nations’ finance departments to ease tensions and deepen ties.

But this visit falls in an election year, where tough talk on China has increased by Democrats and Republicans — who criticize Chinese ownership of popular social media app TikTok, the nation’s censorship and human rights record and hold a deep mistrust over recent acts of espionage such as hacking and the use of a spy balloon.

Scheherazade S. Rehman, a professor of International Business and Finance and International Affairs at George Washington University, said while “it’s an election year, so all the rhetoric is going to be sharper, the U.S and China are in a symbiotic trading relationship and ultimately need each other.”

China is one of the United States’ biggest trading partners, and economic competition between the two nations has increased in recent years. Yellen stressed Wednesday that the United States has no interest in decoupling from China.

China’s support of Russia as it continues its invasion of neighboring Ukraine is another issue that will come up during the meetings. As the U.S. and its allies sanction Russian officials and entire sectors of the Russian economy, like banking, oil production and manufacturing, trade between China and Russia has increased.

It is a nice resort hotel only 30 minutes far from the airport. Staff is really friendly and kind but this is a Phillipine standard. There are two reasons for me not to rate this hotel higher. First, even though I was in a suit, my air condition was only on or off mode. If it is off you feel you are in an oven in 30 minutes and if it is on you feel like you are in a fridge in 30 minutes. So it was not possible to have a non stop sleep for even a few hours. Second, transportation. Yes, taxis are cheap in Cebu. But still you have to wait for a taxi for 15 minutes on average. Why doesn't the hotel has a shuttle running at least an hour and why don't they allow 3 cycles to come closer to the hotel. One last thing is the rates for currency. They have worse rate than even the counter at the airport!

• Sleep Quality

Thank you for finding the Resort nice and for choosing us for your holiday. This is the first time that we have heard about such cooling condition in the room. Rest assured that we will let our Housekeeping and Engineering Team look into our airconditioning unit. Taxis are on call and are subject to availability. Waiting time may take 5-30 minutes depending on the traffic of usage. Tricycles are allowed to wait at the main gate of the Resort. We free daily drop off to 2 big Malls in the city every 10 am for the convenience of our guests. A lot of our guests have been observed to depart around this time and are happy with this free arrangement. A warm welcome always await you in Costabella.

I like this hotel because it it family friendly. My children are secure 24/7. It is very clean with polite and friendly staff. Rooms are worth the price. Foods are delicious. There's a designated smoking area. It is also very accessible to reached. I would recommend this place to my friends.

Very clean place and courteous staff, i would not think twice to visit this place again. The price is very reasonable. One of the must place to visit while in Cebu. The food is great to and very accessible to reach.

We loved the interior and exterior of Costabella Tropical Beach hotel. Too bad we only stayed for a night to check out this hotel. Food was decent and hours of restaurant is perfect! Friendly staffs and rooms are clean. If you're a couple looking for a quiet time, this is not for you. This hotel is suitable for family with kids. The beach is not for beach lover, lots of sea urchin, sea weeds and not swim-able. The top floor doesn't have a private balcony so expect people passing your rooms. There's sitting area but again, it's not private. There's a designated smoking area outside the lobby and it does not smell like smoke pit.

The teaming sea life is a clear indication that our beach is healthy, making it perfect for swimming. Our beach attendants regularly scours the beach to keep it clean and free from sea urchin in the best way possible. A room with private balcony can always be arranged for you whenever available upon reservation. It will be wonderful to welcome you back at Costabella.

Great facility nice clean rooms but had problem with hot water in shower won't stay hot long and if your a smoker you can only smoke in one area by lobby and not in rooms.it was still a nice place too stay and beach was very clean and staff was great

What a start: Yankees coming home off thrilling victory at Arizona and fantastic road trip

PHOENIX – Maybe their win on Wednesday wasn’t as perfect as the postcard day downtown, but the Yankees are headed home with a 6-1 record.

Concluding a season-opening road trip that began with a four-game sweep at Houston, the Yankees outlasted the Arizona Diamondbacks in 11 innings, 6-5, on Wednesday afternoon.

Under the open roof at Chase Field, Aaron Judge’s RBI double to right-center field padded the Yanks’ one-run lead in the 11th inning, the first of which came in on a balk by Scott McGough.

Once more, Yankees closer Clay Holmes ran into trouble, unable to hold a two-run lead in the 10th (which included an infield error) and needed Caleb Ferguson to bail him out in the 11th.

After Ferguson gave up a run with two out, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo sent up Gabriel Moreno as a pinch-hitter with runners at first and second.

Yanks manager Aaron Boone walked him intentionally, which sent up the reliever McGough with the bases loaded, and Ferguson struck him out looking to end it.

The D-backs had lost the use of the designated hitter, due to DH Ketel Marte having to replace an injured player defensively.

Alex Verdugo hits first home run with Yankees

At home in Arizona, Alex Verdugo enjoyed every moment of his first big Yankee moment.

Batting with the ghost runner at second base, Verdugo blasted a two-run homer on a first-pitch delivery from Diamondbacks closer Kevin Ginkel in the 10th inning.

After watching the ball soar out to right field, Verdugo calmly flipped the bat and then took something of a victory lap around the bases, concluding with a celebratory point toward the stands where a whole rooting section of friends and family members cheered.

Aaron Judge blasts first homer of the season

Aaron Judge had provided the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the fourth off Arizona starter Merrill Kelly, with a two-run shot to right-center field, his first homer of the year.

Until then, the Yankees captain was just 3-for-25 with one extra-base hit, a double. He hadn’t homered in a big-league game since last Sept. 27, at Toronto.

Dealing with core soreness during spring training that required an MRI (the results were negative), Judge did not homer in 24 Grapefruit League at-bats.

Carlos Rodon gives Yankees a solid start

Yankees starter Carlos Rodon gave up two solo homers in 5.1 innings – the only damage against him, as Ian Hamilton pitched out of his sixth-inning jam.

Ketel Marte’s fifth-inning homer made it 2-2. Kelly lasted seven innings, yielding two runs.

Hamilton retired all 10 batters he faced, striking out four, as the right-hander continued his hot start with three scoreless appearances.

In honor of National Beer Day — April 7 for those celebrating — we've rounded up some of the breweries on the Cape and included brews Cape Codders and tourists alike just have to try.

Cape Cod and the Islands have at least seven breweries. Try a pint or taste several at once with a flight in Falmouth , Martha's Vineyard , Dennis , Provincetown , Hyannis and Mashpee .

Looking to visit a couple of breweries at once? One way to be responsible is to choose a designated driver, but you could also book a brewery tour offered by Tap Tastings or City Brew Tours Cape Cod .

Cape Cod beer tour companies

“Our slogan is you drink, we guide,” said Mark Reade, co-owner of City Brew Tours Cape Cod. 

Public tours don’t officially start until May, but City Brew Tours Cape Cod — a franchised branch of City Brew Tours, a national company founded in Vermont — will run a “Hyannis Taste of Cape Cod Tour” and a “Falmouth Taste of Cape Cod” tour. Prices were not available at press time. To book a private tour or to learn more about their upcoming public tours, visit www.citybrewtours.com/cape-cod/ .

Private tours take a minimum of 10 people to some of the Cape’s breweries, wineries and distilleries — which is up to the customer but Reade does provide suggested stops.

“We're not like a drinking party bus,” Reade said. “We're bringing you to sample flights so you're sampling different kinds of beer in much smaller quantity, but you're getting the experience of trying what each brewery has to offer.”

Mashpee-based Tap Tastings provides a shuttle service, picking up guests and taking them from brewery to brewery, winery and/or distillery and sometimes restaurants in their van, aptly named Barley.

“This is great for people who just want to get together and want nobody driving,” Leslie Cozza, co-owner of Tap Tastings, said. 

They offer three “levels” of service — “travel only/shuttle service,” “barley perks” and a pre-paid “inclusive service.” For the starting level, guests pay $120 per hour for the tour with pickup and drop off available within 20 miles of Tap Tastings' Mashpee HQ.

For National Beer Day on April 7: A guide to beers brewed on the Cape and Islands

Paying homage to their marine science backgrounds, Greg Horning and Alex Bergan, owners of Aquatic Brewing in Falmouth traded their lab coats for beer koozies in 2020 and now run the small batch, quality flavor brewery on the edge of downtown Falmouth. 

“Our goal is to make a few beers really well rather than make many different beers in a mediocre fashion,” Horning said. 

The beers:  

• Aronnax: A New England IPA, the Arronax is one of Aquatic Brewing's more popular brews with the standard hazy and juicy New England taste.  
• Defendable Draft: Bergan’s current favorite, the Defendable Draft is an American Pale Ale with “ a piney resinous character with some nice citrusy notes,” Bergan said. "It's very well balanced.”
• Tawaki: Horning’s current favorite, the Tawaki is a pale ale brewed from New Zealand hops. “It's (a) unique kind of tropical forward hop profile that I think is special,” he said.
• Pie in the Sky: Named after Pie in the Sky Bakery and Cafe , this collaboration beer uses roasted coffee from Pie in the Sky to create a Coffee Oatmeal Stout.
• Bay to Bay State: While this collaboration brew with Barnstable Brewing doesn’t hit the breweries until mid to late May, the West Coast IPA pays homage to Bergan and Barnstable Brewing Brewer Bryan Crass’ home state.

Bad Martha (Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard)

With locations in Falmouth and Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard, Bad Martha Beer brings a taste of the Cape and the Islands to its beers. 

The beers: 

• Mischievous Mermaid: Described by Josh Flanders, general manager of Bad Martha Beer, the Mischievous Mermaid has the same hazy and juicy flavors as a traditional New England IPA but the Cape Cod sea salt added to the brew makes it a “Cape Cod Style” IPA. 
• Martha’s Vineyard Ale: The flagship beer of Bad Martha, the Martha’s Vineyard Ale is an English-style pale ale, “medium-bodied ale,” according to Flanders, with notes of caramel and toffee.
• 508 IPA: The “staple IPA,” of Bad Martha, according to Flanders. The 508 IPA is hoppier and more balanced than a traditional New England-style IPA and has “a little more of a malt backbone.”  
• Big Bad Belgian Quad: With an ABV of 10.3%, the Big Bad Belgian Quad is exactly what it sounds like. “This is a very rich complex beer,” Flanders said. The beer is made from Belgian candied syrup and has a “malt forward body with hints of plum,” according to the website.

Naukabout Brewing (Mashpee)

Core to Naukabout Brewing Company’s values is having a good time. Even their name, a term coined by one of the Naukabout co-founders' father, means the things you do for fun when you’re done doing what you’ve got to. So, if you’re looking to “naukabout” with a beer in hand, here are a few to try:

• Beach Hair: Described as their “kind of flagship IPA,” by co-owner Peter Murner, the Beach Hair is a New England IPA with tropical notes from the Citra, Mosaic and Idaho hops used in the brew, according to their website.  
• Dunes of the Cape: A “piña colada” milkshake IPA, the Dunes of the Cape might just be your tropical getaway in a glass as hints of pineapple and coconut shine through the brew. 
• Cape Lager: For Murner, the Cape Lager is “our version of a domestic beer for the folks that like something akin to (a) Miller, Coors, Budweiser type product.” An easy drinker and a crowd-pleaser.

Cape Cod Beer (Hyannis)

As the Cape’s original microbrewery, Cape Cod Beer knows a thing or two about making a good brew. With a constantly rotating menu — like many other breweries on the Cape — for the sake of this article, we’ve decided to highlight their six staple beers available year-round on tap and in cans. 

• Beach Blonde: According to brewer Carolyn Brooks, the Beach Blonde is what people think of when they think of Cape Cod Beer. The American Blonde Ale is “light and refreshing” with a “hint of toasted malt character,” according to their website. 
• Cape Cod Red: Named after the famous Nantucket Reds, this amber ale has hints of toffee with a “subtle spicy hop character,” according to the website, and is the original beer of Cape Cod Beer. 
• Cape Cod IPA: Don’t let the name fool you. This West Coast IPA is perfect for those looking for “something a little more bitter and more hoppy,” according to Brooks, with hints of citrus and malt.
• Cape Cod Porter: For its year-round dark brew, the porter is a malty brew with flavors of toffee, caramel and chocolate. Apparently, it’s also good on ice cream. 
• Cape Cod Pilsner: “Crisp, clean and with a spicy hop,” the website reads, this pilsner is one of the few lagers brewed by Cape Cod Beer. 
• Narrow Lands: Finally, their New England IPA. Narrow Lands is “one of those easy, juicy IPAs,” according to Brooks, and tastes, the website says, "like grapefruit, guava, mango and orange rind."

Barnstable Brewing (Hyannis)

So, what does happen when two Jesuits walk into a brewery? The answer? Maybe you can find out by trying the beer of the same name at Barnstable Brewing.

• Jesuit Juice: Jesuit Juice is a New England IPA with hints of citrus, like orange, peach and “a touch of floral pine notes,” according to Crass.
• Two Jesuits Walk Into a Brewery: Essentially, it’s the “Double IPA version of Jesuit Juice,” according to Crass, with flavors of passionfruit and grapefruit. 
• Cape Crusher: The Cape Crusher is a Helles Light Lager made from water which imitates that of Munich “to kind of lend some more authenticity to it,” according to Crass. As for its taste, he says it’s a “light, bright, crisp, refreshing, easy drinker.”
• Blueberry Ale: Made with Maine blueberries, the Blueberry Ale is Barnstable’s fruit beer. With a fruity and floral taste, the beer has a slight twang thanks to its malt backbone, according to the website. 
• Bay to Bay State: As mentioned earlier, the Bay to Bay State brew will be hitting taps in May, so keep an eye out for it.

Devil’s Purse Brewing (South Dennis)

With a staple beer, the Handline Kölsch, under their belt, Devil’s Purse is knocking brewing out of the park, the industrial park that is (they’re located inside of one.)

The beers : 

• Handline Kölsch: The famous German-style beer, the Handline Kölsh is a fan and brewer favorite. Described simply as “crisp, clean and refreshing,” on their website, the beer is made for all drinkers, any time. “Anyone can drink it,” said Tim Reilly, owner of Devil’s Purse. “It's great in the summer, it's great in the winter.” 
• Spicy Pickle Lager: After creating an unexpected fan favorite last summer, their Spicy Pickle Lager, a collaboration with Lighthouse Keeper’s Pantry, returns on April 17. Inspired by Lighthouse Keeper’s dill pickles and habanero hot sauce, the lager quickly gained a following. “As weird as it sounds, pickle lager was actually drinkable and good,” Reilly said.
• Charlene’s Dream: Along with the Kölsh, this Altbier is Reilly’s favorite brew. “It’s drinkable, dry and doesn’t have the fruity taste that ale yeast provides,” he said.

Provincetown Brewing Co. (Provincetown)

At Provincetown Brewing Co. they pride themselves on being a gathering place for those at the lower end of the Cape as well as brewing some delectable beers. 

“Our Taproom especially is a place to hang out,” Erik Borg, head of marketing and sales at Provincetown Brewing Co. said. “There's nothing better than sitting down, relaxing and enjoying a local craft beer, either as you're setting out to explore or taking a break from your explorations.”

• The Bearded Mistress: The flagship IPA of Provincetown Brewing, The Bearded Mistress is a New England IPA with "really crisp floral undertones” and fewer hops flavor than most IPAs, according to Borg.
• Golden Hook Ale: Another IPA, Golden Hook Ale is a “classic golden ale,” per Borg, with notes of citrus and a refreshing taste. Perfect for summer. 
• Crandaddy Sour: Made with Cape Cod cranberries, this fruited sour is “sour and tart” and “really crisp” according to Borg. “It's fantastic.”
• Double Rainbow IPA: Provincetown’s “biggest beer” according to Borg, the Double Rainbow IPA has hints of caramel with a toned-down hoppiness compared to a standard IPA. Borg described this beer as “bold and brassy.”

Provincetown Brewing Co. is located at 141 Bradford St. in Provincetown, www.ptownbrewingco.com/ .

Offshore Ale Company (Martha’s Vineyard)

Offshore Ale Company is the only brewery on the island brewing and selling beers year-round. Now, they send cans to the mainland to give non-islanders a sip of the Vineyard — and maybe a reason to make a trip. 

• Amber Ale: The flagship beer of Offshore Ale, the Amber Ale has a caramelly taste and a light and easy-to-drink body, according to Josie Iadicicco, brand ambassador for Offshore Ale Co. 
• East Chop Lighthouse Golden Ale: A Pilsner-style beer, this award-winner is crisp and “crushable,” says Iadicicco, popular with Islanders and mainlanders alike. 
• Beach Road Nut Brown Ale: A favorite of brewer Neil Atkins, this brown ale is low in bitterness with a “little bit of a bite” and a “subtle finish of bittersweet chocolate” per Iadicicco.
• Menemsha Creek Pale Ale: Sold on the Island Queen, the ferry which runs to and from the Island, the Menemsha Creek is “clean and approachable,” a perfect fit for people looking for a less bitter beer than an IPA, according to Iadicicco. 
• Lazy Frog IPA: Made in collaboration with The Lazy Frog, a game store on the Vineyard, this IPA has a higher ABV at 7% and a more bitter taste with hints of citrus.  
• Islander Double IPA: Named after the retired steamship ferry, this Double IPA is bold and bitter with “citrus aromas” according to Iadicicco.

Day Use - Review of Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel

I was here together with my friends last Sunday, May 22nd and the resort exceeded our expectations. When we first arrived at around 10:30am, there were already a lot of people in the beach and all the chairs were taken. Good thing we brought our own mat. But we were able to get some chairs after a few people left. The buffet lunch was great. With the Php 1,100 day use rate, I can say that it's a really good deal compared to the day use rates of other resorts in Mactan. There were a lot of choices from the appetizer to the main courses to the dessert. Everything was delicious! Spent the whole afternoon at the beach and in their pools. The shower room was also clean. Overall our experience was great. All the staff were very courteous as well. :) Would love to visit again. More

If it wasn't for their kiddie place, i would have rated much lower. Initially checked in at premier deluxe poolside-room was spacious but a/c unit cannot make the entire room cold enough because it is pointed towards dresser, very far away from the bed! Also the watercloset would only flush after a loooong interval, not good for a family of 4! At 10pm, I asked to be moved to a different room with a different a/c or room set-up. After 2 follow-up calls the next day, we were moved to a deluxe room and I couldn't be happier. Room is newly renovated-clean and a/c unit was working really well. This is a downgrade in terms of room category, but since it is newly renovated-it felt like an upgrade! For breakfast, they served 1 chicken, 1 fish, 1 beef plus bacon. They served meatball on our first day, and patty on the 2nd..bleh! Not totally excited in eating cream dory for breakfast - would rather have daing since we're in Cebu! Pool is old, but beach was pretty clean. Reasonable price for jetski - 3k for 1 hour. Checking-out was also a pain-had to line up for more than 40mins. I suggest that you just take the name of your guest as they arrive at the counter, and then just call them when you are ready for the next guest-at least they get to wait sitting down. Anyway, the kiddie place was so nice and clean. There were so much things to do, plenty of good books to read and most of all, their staff really interacts with the kids and shows interest in what my kids really wanted to do while they're at the kiddie place. Thanks for a good weekend stay Costabella staff!

Had to kill 24 hours in Cebu between my domestic and international flights and found this place online and just walked in and got a room. My criteria was to spend less than $100 and it must have a beach and a nice pool to relax for the day. I couldn't have found a better place. It is small for a resort but has everything one would need for a longer stay and in fact most of the guests are families staying 4-5 days or more. Lovely open air restaurant, 2 nice pools, one with a good slide. Beach isn't great, but none of them are on Mactan. It is as good as one can get on this island. Amazing breakfast buffet included. Had a wonderful massage at the spa. Great Service all around. Only down side, I booked the cheapest room and it backs up on a construction site. I didn't care because was at the pool and the spa during the day. If you want a day time nap the cushioned and covered beach chairs will do just fine. Would highly recommend for an affordable, compact resort experience.

We are staying here for our friends' wedding. It's fine during the day, but there is machinery being used all night at the construction site next door. The sporadic hammering of steel is the worst. It is 3am and they are still working. While I admire their work ethic, this is not what I expected when booking a luxury hotel.

The place is nice but nothing extraordinary. The food presentation was good but the taste was just plain and boring. I dont know why but it could probably be because there's just too many people and that they are also attending to some companies having their summer outing. With the influx of people coming in during weekends, the place could get worse because it is not spaceous enough for everyone.
