Davao has new tourism branding

department of tourism region 11

DAVAO CITY – The Department of Tourism’s regional office (DoT-11) launched on Tuesday its new branding for the region, Davao: Diversity is our Beauty.

Tourism Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan told media that the new branding highlights the unique strengths of the region’s territories: Davao City as a fun place; Davao Oriental as an adventure haven for thrill-seekers; Davao de Oro as a wellness destination; Davao del Norte as an eco-tourism hub; Davao del Sur as a food and coffee haven; and Davao Occidental as a place where nature meets culture.

“Our beauty is in our diversity and our diversity goes beyond the different landscapes in our region. It is seen in our rich heritage, our innovations, our nature’s harvest,” Ms. Tan said during the PEP Talks media forum held at SM Lanang Premier.

In 2017, Davao Region’s tourism tagline was known as “From Islands to Highlands” and promoted the region’s topography as the largest city in the world that covers an area of 244,000 hectares. — Maya M. Padillo

DOT 11 eyes increase of tourist arrivals by 10% this year

Department of Tourism 11 (DOT 11) director Tanya Rabat-Tan says during PEP Talks at The Greenery, SM Lanang Premier on Friday that 2022 is a promising year for the tourism sector of Davao Region due to the return of some air routes. Edge Davao

The Department of Tourism (DOT 11) bared on Friday the agency is eyeing to increase tourist arrivals by 10 percent this year.

DOT Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan told media that DOT 11 is basing its target increase of 10 percent from the 1.3 million arrivals last year.

“Ang magiging base natin ngayon reduced na talaga and based on the 2021 statistics with that ang projected natin will be, nag-revised tayo ng target kasi 2020 bumaba na by 70 percent, and end plan natin for 2022 naga-project tayo ng 10 percent and we really hoping we’ll get more increase,” Tan said during the launch of PEP Talks media forum at SM Lanang Premier on Friday.

Tan reported that in 2019 the region recorded 5.2 million tourist arrivals, which was reduced by 70 percent in 2020 with 1.4 million and reduced once again in 2021 with 1.3 million tourist arrivals.

“Please take note these data are being supplied ng provincial, city and municipalities offices,” she explained.

Tan explained that DOT 11 is eyeing to achieve the target tourist arrivals this year through intra-regional travels and opening of more flights.

“Hopefully more flights will be coming in and I think it could do more,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tan reported that the region recorded a total of 224 foreign tourists who arrived via Davao International Airport (DIA) from the period of February 11 to 23, 2022.

“We do have foreigners coming in already via DIA. We don’t have daily flights yet. We have three times a week via Scoot Davao-Singapore flights and twice a sweek for Dubai. We have yet to seek from the LGU yung data for via domestic na entry na mga foreigners,” Tan said.

On the other hand, Tan said during the International Travel Festival held in Cebu City on February 18, 2022, she shared that she had a talk with some airlines who are expressing interest to resume flights, however, did not give full details as these are not final yet.

“We talked with some airline executives and we were merely asking them to resume flights within Davao City. Things like that. We emphasized that Davao City is very much open and they are welcome here. May mga information shared with us but its hard to divulge yet because there is no finality yet. But promising naman yung year na ito for some routes but its hard to discuss pa some routes,” she said.

This city, teeming with a vibrant populace, is the bustling hub of commerce, education, tourism, arts, culture and wellness in the southern Philippines.

Davao Region

Designated as Region XI, Davao Region is one of the regions of the Philippines, located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. Davao Region consists of four provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. The region encloses the Davao Gulf and its regional center is Davao City.

Region XI was originally called Southern Mindanao, and in addition to the three Davao provinces also included Surigao Del Sur and South Cotabato. At that time, Compostela Valley was still part of Davao del Norte. Republic Act No. 7225, ratified on March 16, 1992, created the province of Sarangani from South Cotabato. Then, Republic Act No. 7901, signed on February 3, 1995, by President Fidel V. Ramos transferred Surigao del Sur into the newly created region of Caraga (Region XIII). Finally, on September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Executive Order No. 36 reorganized the regions and provinces in Mindanao. This moved South Cotabato and Sarangani to SOCCSKSARGEN region and renamed Southern Mindanao as Davao Region.

The Night Scene

Davao's lively night scene is an adventure in itself with its diverse fun and wholesome night activities and destinations. A fun-filled fusion of various after-dark actions in videoke and piano bars, dance clubs, music lounges, restaurants, and coffee shops. Davao's favorite night spots are conveniently located in popular dining and entertainment enclaves such as The Venue (Quirino Avenue.), Matina Town Square (Matina), Rizal Promenade (Rizal Street), Victoria Plaza Mall (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Station 91 (C.M. Recto Avenue), Fountain Place (Agdao), Damosa Gateway (Lanang), Jack's Ridge Resort and Restaurant (Shrine Hill), among others. Or opt for a night of chance and test your luck the Casino Filipino (Grand Regal Hotel) or at the Casino Filipino VIP Club (The Apo View Hotel).

The perfect climax to your night? A cup of rich and creamy durian coffee in the metro's coffee shops and cafes. But of course, you can extend your crazy party hours until the wee hours of the morning.

Foodtrip Hang-out

Eating out is just one of the many favorite pastimes of the Davaoeños. More often, you would hear them say "mangaon 'ta!" (let's eat!) or even discuss about the next meal while dining. It is because food is cheap, fresh and mouth-watering in this city known for its abundance of seafood and farm-fresh bounties.

Never miss to sample local specialties such as inihaw na panga (grilled tuna jaw), inihaw na bihod (grilled tuna roe), crispy buntot ng bariles (tuna tail), chicken barbecue grilled the Davao way, and of course, the ubiquitous kinilaw (raw tuna or blue marlin strips marinated in coconut vinegar, soy sauce, chili and other local spices), served with puso (hanging rice) and an interesting dip consisting of soy sauce, coconut vinegar, calamansi (Philippine lemon) and local spices.

You can also find numerous selections of Filipino, Thai, French, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and other foreign cuisine in various restaurants around the city, making Davao City a truly exciting place for dining.

Wander Around

Here are suggested itineraries to complete your Davao experience.

  • Around the metro

Experience the daily grind of the locals as you stroll along San Pedro Street. You can find the city hall, city council and San Pedro Cathedral, the city's largest church, along this thoroughfare. You can also take a break and savor durian at the nearby Durian Park (Bolton St.). Get a glimpse of Davao's culture and history as you witness local tribes weave beautiful fabrics at the T'boli Weaving Center (Waterfront Insular Hotel), and see how the city progressed through time with a visit to the Davao Museum (Insular Village). Take a trip back to another era at the Japanese Tunnel & Restaurant (Balusong-Matina). Then make a stopover for fresh fruits at Bankerohan Public Market.

  • Bounties of Nature

Enjoy a day with nature in the fascinating countryside. Visit the Philippine Eagle Center (Malagos), Malagos Garden Resort (Malagos), Crocodile Park (Diversion Road, Ma-a), GAP Farming Resort (Diversion Road, Ma-a), High Ponds Resort (Toril), and Eden Nature Park (Eden, Toril). See how our premium tuna products are packed and shipped at the Davao Fish Port Complex (Toril). On your way back to the city center, make a brief stop at Lola Abon's Durian Factory (Matina) for durian confections you can take home.

  • Shop, shop, shop

Davao City prides itself in having the most number of malls and department stores this side of the archipelago. Indulge yourselves with hours of shopping and recreation at Gaisano Mall of Davao (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Victoria Plaza (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Gaisano South Citimall (Ilustre Street), NCCC Mall (Matina), Makro (Bangkal) and SM City (Ecoland). Aldevinco Shopping Center (C.M. Recto Avenue) is a favorite bazaar for "pasalubong" (take home) items of batik garments, brass products, ethnic accessories and souvenir shirts sold cheaper than those in the malls. Other favorite "pasalubong" include fresh and candied fruits, orchids and cutflowers, packed frozen tuna, and fresh seafood available in various shops and public markets.

Getting Around

The Davao International Airport service flights from major points of destinations in the Philippines including the cities of Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod and Zamboanga as well as direct flights from Manado (Indonesia) and Singapore, connecting Davao virtually to the world.

Air travel from Manila to Davao is approximately 90 minutes by plane. Travel time by sea takes three days from Manila North harbor to Davao's Sasa International Wharf while land travel via the scenic Pan-Philippine or Maharlika Highway takes around 42 hours.

The new Davao International Airport is a mere 15-minute ride from downtown Davao. Metered taxicabs and car rentals are readily available.

Hon. ma. esperanza christina garcia frasco.

Philippine Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco is a former three-term mayor of the Municipality of Liloan in the Province of Cebu before she was catapulted to the executive branch of government when President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. handpicked her to join his Cabinet and lead the Department of Tourism (DOT) in 2022. Born to a family of public servants, her legacy as a local chief executive saw the rise of Liloan as a top model and most resilient municipality in the Philippines. As the youngest member of the Marcos Cabinet, she has consistently been ranked one of the top-performing Secretaries of the Marcos administration, delivering solid outcomes and achievements for the Department.

From back-to-back international accolades for the Philippines to breaching tourism targets, her visionary leadership has propelled the country onto the world stage. Most recently, with the Philippines' election as vice presidency of the UNWTO General Assembly, a position once held by the country more than two decades ago, alongside the chairmanship of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific. As she makes a mark in the tourism industry, she has laid out some of the most groundbreaking innovations yet, leveraging on collaborative and shared governance that leaves no destination and people behind, with the Filipino at the heart of the industry. Lauded by the entire tourism industry, SKAL International recently distinguished her with the prestigious Tourism Good Governance Award. Since her assumption to office, tourism reclaimed its pole position in the Philippine economy as the 2nd top driver of the country's growth and development, employing millions of Filipinos. Their world-renowned brand of warm hospitality has made the world "Love the Philippines," bringing us a step closer to fulfilling the President's vision of transforming the Philippines into a tourism powerhouse in Asia.

'Tourism is real money': Commissioner Ezell talks tourism, growth in Madison County

TDTD Commissioner Mark Ezell shows a chart graphing the rate of Madison County visitor spending from 2015 through 2022 during a Jackson Chamber Breakfast Club Meeting inside DoubleTree Hotel in Jackson, Tenn., on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Ranking 11th in the country for travel spending in 2023, Tennessee continues to be a hub for tourism, and the Jackson-Madison County area is poised to continue being a top beneficiary, according to the state's commissioner of tourism.

As part of its "Breakfast Club" series, the Greater Jackson Chamber welcomed Commissioner of Tourist Development Mark Ezell Friday as its keynote speaker.

A member of Gov. Bill Lee's cabinet since 2019, Ezell emphasized the value of a visitor, speaking to both state and local success in tourism.

In a state where, in 2023, tourism brought in a record-breaking $29 billion in direct spending, Ezell's department operates under a $50 million budget.

With this at the forefront of his presentation, he hoped attendees walked away from his discussion with the understanding that "tourism is real money."

How does Madison County compare?

Visitor spending in Madison County totaled $312.5 million in 2022, up 7% from 2021.

As a result, Madison County households save an average of $842 in taxes annually.

"Look at that trend, we've had growth in Jackson and Madison County," Ezell said.

Along with places like the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum, he noted the area's "tremendous outdoor assets" like Chickasaw State Park and Pinson Mounds as top local attractions.

Per an announcement made in December 2023, Jackson is set to host the inaugural State Games of Tennessee, an amateur Olympic-style sporting event, in June 2025.

Ezell says this is a premier opportunity for our region.

"We're just so excited, first of all, that Tennessee has put in a state games program and then second, we're excited for Jackson to get to have that," he said.

"It's going to really mean a lot of people come, they'll spend the night, they'll visit those restaurants, stay in the hotels. All of those things are literally an economic boost as well as, branding-wise, Jackson has done a great job in sports and helping promote tournaments and things like that, so this is just going to be one of those that really boosts that even greater over the upcoming years."

Developing tourism statewide

Emphasizing the recreational activities that the Volunteer State has to offer is a top priority for Ezell's department.

He is leading initiatives like Bill Dance Signature Lakes and BikeTN, aimed at showcasing the state's 14 premier fishing locations and more than 50 biking trails.

"We will have interstate signs for people to go get the best bass fishing in the nation all under the name of Bill Dance Signature Lakes," he said.

Promoting cultural awareness remains another concerted goal for Ezell's department.

In development since 2018, is the U.S. Civil Rights Trail consists of 15 sites across the state and led by the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

"It's a really important thing for us to bring visitors to so they can have their hearts transformed and we can help change the world," he said.
