Essential Guide to Wildlife Jungle Safari at GIZ Devalia Sasan Gir

“Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary” or Sasan Gir is the only place in India to spot the Kings of the Jungle. As per 2015 census, the lion population has comfortable increased to 523 in the 4 districts of Gir National Park. How to Book the Safari at Gir Interpretation Zone (GIZ) Devalia

Gir National Park is the only place where you can view the majestic lions in India. Gir National Park is open to visitors from 16th October to 15th June. Here there are 3 different options of Safari to choose from, namely:

Option 1: Gir Jungle Trail (Main Sanctuary area)

Option 2: GIZ Devalia Gypsy Safari (Gir Interpretation Zone – “Gir in a nutshell”)

Option 3: GIZ Devalia Bus Safari

Gir Jungle Trail is open to visitors from 16th October to 15th June however, GIZ Devalia is open all year round with Wednesday as a weekly off.

Here is the jungle safari timings at Gir Interpretation Zone (GIZ) Devalia:

Safari Tip #1:  Book at least 1 Safari at GIZ Devalia for maximizing your chances of big cat sightings. Preferably book 7AM to 7:55AM morning safari at GIZ Devalia.

Basically the safari cost consists of 3 items which you need to arrange to visit the GIZ Devalia – Jungle Safari Permit (INR 800 – 1,000 per Safari Vehicle – Single seat permit not possible at Gir), Vehicle Hire charge (INR 1,500) and the Guide fees payment (INR 400). There is a difference between Indian and Foreign tourists only for the Jungle Permit charges however the charges for the Vehicle hire and Guide fees remain the same.

Vehicle Permit Booking for Jungle Safari at GIZ Devalia

Private open Gypsies, registered by the Forest Department are available locally along with the well-trained local Guide. All the Permits are issued online by the Forest Department at the Reception Counter, Sinh Sadan, Sasan.

Unlike other national parks, at Gir National Park, only Full Vehicle permits are available. Single seat permits are not available.

The vehicle Permit Booking for the Gir Jungle Trail can be done in a relaxed way online on the Gujrat government’s website for Gir National Park . This is definitely better than trying to getting it when you are already at the park entrance, where things become a bit tedious. The manual paper work involved in filling the permit forms coupled with the hassle of standing a long slow-moving line while the family and friends are waiting for you in the safari jeep is in my opinion … a sure shot way to kill all the fun!

Once you are on the Gujrat Govt Girlion website, click “Booking” tab and select “GIZ Devalia Gypsy Safari” and fill up the details.

Full Vehicle permit : The Full Vehicle safari permit for the whole jeep costs INR 800 on weekdays and INR 1,000 on weekends/festival days. A safari Jeep can seat up to six adult tourists + 1 extra child (3-12 years) excluding the driver and the guide. Extra child permit costs INR 100 on weekdays and INR 125 on weekends/festival days. Single seat permits are not possible at Gir National Park.

Vehicle hire charges – Jeep booking

Once you have completed the permit booking online, then the Safari Jeep booking is done easily once you reach Gir National Park. At the Reception desk of Gir National Park, the permit booking details will be verified by the forest official with the ID proof you mentioned while booking the permit. Then the vehicle number will be mentioned on the vehicle permit booking printout. The vehicle hire fees needs to be paid directly at the Gypsy. The hire charges for the vehicle i.e. a 4×4 Jeep safari is INR 1,500 per jeep.

Also, guide fee of INR 400 per safari vehicle needs to be paid directly to the guide.

Now you will need to board the allocated safari vehicle and the guide will accompany you for the jungle safari.

Safari Tip #2: I t is better to come up a bit early say 30 minutes to an hour before the scheduled entry time, to complete these formalities in time before the safari starts and avoid any undue delays.

Best time to visit Gir National Park

Gir Jungle Trail is open to visitors from 16th October to 15th June however, GIZ Devalia is open all year round with Wednesday as a weekly off. The winter months are pleasant and best to visit. The summer months of April and March are scorching but best to view the wildlife as they prefer lazing around the water holes.

We all have learned that Lion is the king of forest, but usually we get to see the lion king in the prison, I mean Zoo. Seeing Lion captivated in few square meter doesn’t suit at all because lion itself is a symbol of power and pride. Wouldn’t it be great, if we could able to see lion walking freely in his own territory and that too in India. I am talking about lion safari in Gir forest of Gujarat. Here is a quick guide for you, so that you can plan your visit of Gir National Park for a memorable lion safari without any hitch .

India is the only home of lion outside Africa. Gir forest in the southern Gujarat is the real home of Asiatic lion , spread mainly in Junagarh, Amreli and Gir-Somnath districts. Around 250 Sq. Km area established as Gir National park, protected area for Asiatic lion, is used for lion safari . Near about 550 lions are there in Gir forest.

Lion safari in Gir Forest National Park, Quick guide

Gujarat tourism organize 3 types of lion safari in Gir National Park from October to May ; ‘Gir Jungal trail’, ‘Devalia Gypsy safari’ and ‘Devalia bus safari’, all operate from Sasan.

Choosing the right Lion safari is the first step, then book for forest permit online.

Gir Jungle trail

If you want to go to real Gir forest, you must choose option of ‘Gir Jungle trail’.

• In Gir Jungle trail, you go in open gypsy with a experienced forest guide, through some predefined routes.
• Gir Jungle trail operate three times a day; 6 AM to 9 AM, 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM.
• Around 40 permits are there for a single slot and if you want morning slot, you have to plan in quite advance because of its high demand.
• The total duration of this lion safari is about 3 hour, in which they cover around 35 km through the defined route of forest.
• There is no guarantee of having a sight of lion or other wild animals, although guide and rider put their maximum effort, so that you can enjoy and know the wild life of Gir.

Devalia Gypsy safari

In this lion safari you go to Devalia safari park (Gir Interpretation Zone) , which is a fenced park of 400 hectare. This park is located near Devalia village, about 10 Km from Sasan village .

Main aim to develop this park was to reduce the load of tourists from Gir National Park, at the same time providing opportunity to see entire wildlife of Gir forest at a single place. Some tourist see it as an open zoo in which visitors be in cage instead of animals.

• In Devalia safari park, you get opportunities of seeing lion for sure, along with other animals of Gir forest, like; Leopards, Sambhar, Chital, Black buck, Wild Boar, etc.
• Here, Cage-gypsy is used for Devalia safari as safety measure, as the density of lion & other animals is quite high as compare to Gir forest National Park.
• The total duration of Devalia safari is 1 hour, it operate 7 times a day (10 permit is available for single slot) except on Wednesday.

Devalia Bus safari

Here, you get chance of seeing lion and other animals through the Bus windows.

• No need to take separate guide.
• Have to reach Devalia Safari Park by own means, 10 km from Sasan.
• Bus ride in Devalia Safari Park is just for 30 minutes only and operate 11 times a day, except Wednesday.

How to book Gir forest permit online

Forest permit for ‘Gir Jungle trail’ and ‘Devalia jeep safari’ is issued online only that cost Rs. 800/- for normal days and Rs. 1000/- for weekend and festive day. A single permit may include maximum of 6 adult and a kid up to 3 year.

Permit for ‘Devalia bus safari’ can also get directly from the counter in Rs. 150/- for normal day and Rs. 190/- for weekend and festive day. Click here for online booking of Gir forest permit.

How to reach Sasan from Junagarh

Sasan is located on the Junagarh-Talala road around 65 km from Junagarh and 20 km from Talala . To reach Sasan, you have to reach Junagarh first, which is the main junction point for Sasan.

Junagarh have good connectivity with other major cities like Ahmedabad , Rajkot, Somnath via train and bus as well. From Junagarh, you can reach Sasan by bus, train or private cab.

Junagarh to Sasan by Bus or train

Bus: There are few GSRTC buses, ply daily from Junagarh to Talala via Sasan, which also take around 2 hour. These buses handles lots of passengers and have many stoppage in between, so its good only if either you are on Solo trip or have little luggage. 50 Rupee is enough to take you to Sasan by Bus.

Cab : A private cab from Junagarh to Sasan may cost you between 1500-2000.

Train : A passenger train also ply daily at 8:00 AM from Junagarh, which take approx 3 hour to reach Sasan.

Cost of different Lion safari in Gir

• Report at reception center ( Sinh Sadan) at Sasan with print-out of online-permit 30 minute prior of safari time .
• There forest authority will check your permit and identity of all persons, for which permit has been issued. Its mandatory to show I-card of all the person at the reception counter.
• After verify all the necessary documents they allot you the route no. for lion safari, along with gypsy and guide. Charge of gypsy is Rs. 1700/- for ‘Jungle trail’ and Rs. 1500/- for ‘Devalia jeep safari’ while guide charges in both case is Rs. 400/-, that has to pay directly to the gypsy driver and guide.
• If you are carrying high end Camera, then you have to take separate camera permit, that cost Rs. 200/- extra.

Visit of Gir Forest National Park

After completed the formality at Sinh Sadan, now its time to move ahead with Gypsy and Forest guide allotted to you.

In ‘Jungle trail’ 12 routes are defined within the Gir National Park, but you have to move through the path allotted to you only. Distributing the traffic to different route is for balancing the traffic equally in forest, so that disturbance to the wild life could be minimize.

Obviously, looking for the lions always the first priorities of visitor, but should not ignore other features of Gir forest. And our guide had drawn our attention towards these beautiful pair of Owls.

You are not supposed to speak louder in the forest, keep that in mind. Gir forest accommodate several kind of animals like leopards, wild boars, monitor lizard, Chital, Blue bull etc.

Forest department created several artificial water hole near the routes of Safari. When natural resources gets dry, animal can come to these water holes that also provide opportunity for visitor to see the wild life of Gir National Park .

It is also very common to see a herd of Chitals grazing around. There are many different bird species too and you can see many peafowl around.

Gir forest have several species of plants and trees, almost 80% of forest is covered with Sagwan trees. Wood of Sagwan tree is quite costly in market, so protecting these forest from illegal cutting of tree is also a challenge.

I was lucky enough that I could saw the two lions, they were not in hurry may be resting after morning patrolling. I was in the time slot of 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM of Jungle trail, though chance of seeing lion is higher in the first slot ( 6 AM to 9 AM).

Stay at Sasan Gir

Sasan is a very small village, you can book your stay within the village so you can reach Sinh Sadan comfortably. Staying at Sasan village is quite economical as compare to any forest lodge, there are many budget option at Sasan, starting from Rs. 500/- per night, like Hotel Umang ( Where I stayed).

There are many restaurant on the main Junagarh-Talala road that offer Kathiyawadi Thali , ranging from Rs. 100/- to Rs. 150/-.

Best time to visit Gir National Park

As the region of Gir National park is very close to the Arabian Sea, it face moderate temperature in winter, but considerably hot in summer. So, its batter to plan your lion safari from October to February and book the first slot ( 6 AM to 9 AM), if possible.

• Entry permit can be obtained three months in advance and 48 hours before the date of actual safari date.
• Do not forget to carry the photo identity proof in original.
• Foreign nationals should carry the original passport as the photo identity proof with him/them.

Twelve kilometres west of Sasan Gir village at Devalia, within the Gir National Park precincts, is the Gir Interpretation Zone, better known as simply Devalia. The 4.12-sq-km fenced-off compound is home to a cross-section of Gir wildlife. Lion sightings are basically guaranteed, but it all feels very stage managed and is no substitute for the real park. You may see foxes, mongooses and spotted deer. There's also a leopard in a cage.

The 45-minute bus or jeep tours depart along the trails hourly. An autorickshaw/taxi return trip to Devalia from Sasan Gir village costs around ₹150/350, but if you sign up for the jeep safari, transport is included from the park office in Sasan Gir.

There are tow Safaris as per my research: Gir Jungle Trail and Devalia Safari....While Gir Jungle Trail is suspended during the monsoons, how is the Devalia Safari....Any help would be appreciated!

The Gir Lion Safari is by Gypsy Vehicle and it is in the core jungle area which is quite large.. This safari gets suspended in Monsoon months.

Devalia Safari is by a bus and the duration is less than 1-hour. Old Lions are kept in this area which is called Interpretation Zone. There are good chances of seeing lions in this safari.

Gir Jungle Trail Safari is operated by the forest department Sasan Gir in three shifts. Four wheeler Gypsy enter into the core area of the in two shifts – morning and evening respectively. Morning jeep safari timing is from 06:45 AM to 09:45 AM and 08:30 AM to 11:30 Am and evening slot is from 03:00 to 06:00 PM. You may get chance to see Asiatic Lion, leopards and many other wild species, avifauna & rich flora and fauna.

One Jeep can accommodate maximum of 6 adult travellers and one child. Age up to 12 years considered as child and above 12 years treated as adult for safari booking. If numbers of adults are less then more children can be added up to 7. Since you need to hire an exclusive Jeep for one ride and not per person is charged. Jeep safari coast is same for one person and 6 person boarding the jeep.

How To Reach

The most popular starting point for visits to Devalia Safari Park is Sasan Gir hamlet, which is 13 km from Devalia Safari Park and 56 km from Junagadh. Devalia Safari Park is 374 kilometres from Ahmedabad and 158 km from Rajkot. The reception centre is located near the train station at Devalia Park & Sasan Gir and contains a forest guest house that is cared for by the forest department.

One can either take a local railway from Junagadh city up to Sasan Gir hamlet, or one can take the train from Ahmedabad or Rajkot to Junagadh and then travel the 55 km by bus or taxi to Devalia Safari Park.

Devaliya Jeep Safari is the forest department organized Safari ride in Personal covered Jeep of approximately One hour inside the Devaliya Safari Park (also known as Gir Interpretation Zone). Sightseeing of Asiatic Lion, Leopard & Many other wild animals is Guaranteed here.

• INR 4200/- to 4600/- for Indians (Per Jeep)
• INR 12,500 to 14,000/- for Foreigners (Per Jeep)

One Jeep can accommodate maximum 6 adults and 1 child. Age till 12 years considered as child and more than 12 years considered as adult for safari booking.If number of adults are less then more children can be added up to 7Since the rates are per Jeep and not per person, rates will be same for 1 person and for 6 persons boarding the safari.

Boarding / Reporting point for safari is “Sinh Sadan, Sasan Gir”. Visitor Need to report at least 30 minutes before scheduled Safari time. There is ample parking facility for visitors to park their vehicles and board Jeep.

Safari Timings and Availability of Permits: There are 7 Safari timings as mentioned below & Forest department issue 10 Permit for each time slots. All Permits are available for advance booking, and issued first come first serve basis.

Cancellation Policy:

Note:  Days are calculated excluding the Safari Boarding day & Cancellation request day. Cancellation request received after 6 PM will be considered on next working day. Cancellation policy mentioned above is subject to change.

It is mandatory to provide ID proof detail of all members while booking. ID proofs submitted while Safari Booking will be verified with the original ID proofs at safari boarding time. Boarding will not be possible if found any discrepancy and any refund will not be processed in this case. No ID proofs are accepted other than mentioned in the Booking Form.

Once the safari is booked, any kind of modification is strictly NOT possible, like Change in the ID proof number, name of person including spelling mistake, addition or deletion of person, change in safari date or time slot, etc.

We will refund full amount within 2 working days in case of unavailability of requested jeep safari.

Forest depart reserves the right to cancel the permit or slightly modify the timing in unavoidable circumstances. Decision of the forest department will be final in such case.

What is Devaliya Safari Park / Gir Interpretation Zone?

To reduce the disturbance from tourism in the main sanctuary area, and to facilitate tourists to understand the importance of Gir and its wildlife, an interpretation zone has been created at Devalia. This comprises 412 ha of chain-link fenced area which is ‘Gir in a nutshell’, covering all habitat types and all major representatives of wildlife of Gir. The basic aim of creating this facility is to provide an opportunity to view lions and other animals in their natural habitat within a short period and reduce tourist pressure on the sanctuary. The area has a good quantity of prey base in the form of Spotted Deers, Blue Bulls, Wild Boars, Blackbucks, Sambars and Chinkaras. Spotting a Lion in its savanna habitat is a treat to the eyes for a wildlife. A good variety of grassland, as well as forest avifauna, is also spotted in the area. 20-30 Indian Vultures are regular visitors here.

Devalia Safari Park is about 13 Kilometres away from Sasan Gir, which presents a prominent prospect for tourists to experience the rustic beauty and wildlife. In this park, the safaris are conducted in the minibus, unlike in the gir national park, and one tour completes in 30 minutes. For booking, you can also book your tickets onsite, but there you will have to stand in a queue so, to avoid this, you can also book your tickets online. Devalia Safari offers its visitors with entry permits for their convenience. So, you can book the tickets online in advance by providing your details, like ID proof, name, age, gender, etc. Just for you to know, the cancellation of online permits for this park is nonrefundable. Gir Jungle trail is an open gypsy safari which takes the visitors deep into the woods of Gir forest. It is a 2.5 hours adventure filled ride where visitors get a true jungle experience. During the ride, tourists can spot many different animals of Gir Forest in their natural habitat. Chances of seeing the majestic Asiatic Lion, the king of the jungle, once you enter in to the core zone is an exciting and thrilling experience.

Guests need to book their safari in advance through the government website: www.girlion.in.

The permit obtained by this booking allows up to 6 people to enter the jungle. Additionally, gypsy and forest guides also need to be hired. Both, can be easily hired from Sasan Gir Forest office or by informing at the hotel reception. Hotel Anil Farmhouse — Gir Junge Resort is only 4 kms from the Sasan Gir Forest office. Arrangements can be done to pick up the guests by gypsy, directly from the hotel for their Gir Forest Safari (on prior request).

Safari Charges

Note: In one E-permit maximum 6 (+1*) persons are be allowed. *Only 1 child between 3 to 12 years is allowed.

Additional Charges:

Gypsy: 2100 INR

Guide: 400 INR

Camera charges information is available at the Gir Forest office.

Note: Gir Jungle Trail is closed from 16th June to 15th Oct every year.

Devalia Safari Park

Devalia Safari Park which is also known as Gir Interpretation Zone – Devalia, is a 412 hectare fenced area. Devalia is established as a particular eco-tourism zone to reduce the overload of tourists from Gir Forest Visit. It is a good opportunity for tourists to experience the rustic beauty and wilderness of Gir Forest at a single place in safe habitats, it can be regarded as ‘Gir in a nutshell’. Visitors can see animals like Asiatic lions, Leopards, Sambhar, Black buck, Chital, Blue Bull, Jackal, Wild Boar etc.

*The Devaliya Safari is a 45 minutes bus ride.

Note: Devalia Safari Park is opened throughout the year, but remains closed on every Wednesday.

Planning your Trip to Gir National Park

Sasan Gir is well connected to all the major cities of Gujarat through frequent, private buses as well as government transport. Most convenient is to reach Junagadh or Rajkot and hire a cab which will directly drop you at the hotel. Both of these cities welcome trains from most of the major cities of India. Alternately flights are also available up to Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Diu.

Pickup and Drop facilities are provided by the Hotel on prior request.

One day is dedicated to adventurous Lion Safari or as called by the locals ‘Sinh Darshan’.

The other day is dedicated to enjoying the peaceful and tranquil atmosphere of the resort. Have a refreshing bath at the swimming pool, go for riverside walking at Sunrise/ Sunset. Or simply just sit, relax and rejuvenate your mind in the lap of Mother Nature and connect with yourself and your dear ones. You can also take a farm visit which is an enriching experience for the younger generation who get to know about organic farming; and a nostalgic experience for the adults, who are reminded of their childhood holidays when they had visited their native village.

Many guests also choose to extend their stay in Gir forest to visit the Somnath Temple or Diu beach which are just one day trips from Sasan!
