Dew Tour 2020 at Copper Mountain

Pro skiers and snowboarders from around the world are gathering in Copper Mountain, Colo., yet again for the Dew Tour competition. And the stakes are high with it being an Olympic qualifiers event.

What exactly is Dew Tour? It’s more than 200 athletes from 17 different countries competing in ski and snowboard superpipe, slopestyle, and adaptive snowboard slalom. It’s the best of the best of ski and snowboard competitions.

We’ll have coverage streaming in live from the event over the next few days, so be sure to check back here for more news, updates, and winning results.

Why Dew Tour Is a Big Deal

The U.S. Snowboard and Freeski teams have had a packed competition season. Halfpipe, big air, and slopestyle teams competed at the Big Air FIS World Cup (Dec. 2-4) and the U.S. Grand Prix FIS World Cup (Dec. 8-10) earlier this month.

Plus, many winter athletes are riding full-steam toward the 2022 Beijing Olympics Winter Games.

This weekend, skiers and snowboarders will compete in slopestyle and pipe competitions at the Winter Dew Tour, one of the last Olympic qualifying events on U.S. turf. (Dew Tour was also an Olympic qualifier for freeskiing and snowboarding back in 2014 and 2018.)

Needless to say, Dew Tour is where the action is. And if you aren’t going in person, our live coverage is the place to be.

Many athletes riding at Dew Tour are vying for points to make their way up the FIS rankings, which factors into their Olympic qualifications. Who will podium at Dew Tour? Which skiers and snowboarders will rise to the top ranks? Stay tuned to find out.

Halfpipe Coverage

The halfpipe competition has athletes competing inside Copper Mountain’s 22-foot superpipe. In the finals, each athlete will get three runs (scored on a 100-point system) to show their stuff. The best one of their three runs determines their final rank.

Here are the 10 male freeskiers who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • Aaron Blunk, USA
  • Alex Ferreira, USA

  • Gold : Yuto Totsuka, Japan
  • Silver : Taylor Gold, USA

  • Bronze : Cai Xuetong, China

Slopestyle Coverage

Here’s how slopestyle works: Competitors will get three runs to show their skills. They are scored on a point system out of 100. Here are the 10 male freeskiers who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • Colby Stevenson, USA
  • Oliwer Magnusson, Sweden
  • Fabian Boesch, Switzerland
  • Nick Goepper, USA
  • Etienne Gagnon, Canada
  • Evan McEachran, Canada
  • Alex Hall, USA
  • Mark Hendrickson, Canada
  • Mac Forehand, USA
  • Finn Bilous, New Zealand
  • Gold: Colby Stevenson, USA
  • Silver: Alex Hall, USA
  • Bronze:  Nick Goepper, USA

Men’s ski slopestyle finals saw a ton of talent, but U.S. athletes ended up dominating the podium. Moreso, both first- and second-place finishers are from Park City, Utah: 23-year-old Alex Hall and 24-year-old Colby Stevenson.

Same as the men’s competition format, female slopestyle skiers will compete in three runs, where they are scored on a 100-point scale and then ranked by their best run.

This time at Dew Tour, qualifiers were postponed, meaning the whole field of 16 freeskiers will compete in the three-run final. Skiers to watch in the women’s slopestyle include Eileen Gu — who could potentially podium twice in one day in slopestyle and halfpipe — and Sarah Hoefflin, Giulia Tanno, Johanne Killi, Mathilde Gremaud, along with frontrunner and fan-favorite Tess Ledeux. Plus, U.S. skier and Dew Tour rookie Bella Bacon.

  • Gold:   Tess Ledeux, France
  • Silver: Eileen Gu, China
  • Bronze : Johanne Killi, Norway

Speed was a huge factor with the women’s snowboard slopestyle competition Saturday morning, with big names like U.S. riders Jamie Anderson, Julia Marino, and Courtney Rummel (finishing in 4th place) missing the podium spots.

  • Gold: Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, New Zealand
  • Silver : Enni Rukajarvi, Finland
  • Bronze : Kokomo Murase, Japan

Men’s snowboard slopestyle finals saw an absolute epic performance from all the top athletes, but U.S. athlete and reigning Dew Tour 2020 champion Red Gerard ended up pulling the first place spot with his final run. A third U.S. pro snowboarder Sean FitzSimons finished in fourth place behind snowboard star Mark McMorris.

  • Gold : Red Gerard, USA
  • Silver : Chris Corning, USA
  • Bronze : Mark McMorris, Canada

Adaptive Snowboard Slalom

The only adaptive event at Dew Tour, 16 male and 10 female athletes will compete on the adaptive snowboard slalom course. They’ll be timed on two runs, and the fastest of two runs counts. The women will compete first, then the men.

Women’s final winners

  • Gold: Kiana Clay, USA
  • Silver: Peggy Martin, USA
  • Bronze: Annika Hutsler, USA

Men’s final winners

  • Gold:  Matti Suur-Hamari, Finland
  • Silver: Owen Pick, Great Britain
  • Bronze:  John Leslie, Canada

In 2014, the U.S. took all three medals in the Olympic debut of men’s ski slopestyle. Another sweep is looking possible in Beijing.

Colby Stevenson , Alex Hall and Nick Goepper made it an all-American podium at Friday’s Dew Tour in Copper Mountain, Colorado. Mac Forehand , the other American in the 10-skier final, was fourth for good measure.

Stevenson, who was one millimeter from brain damage in 2016 and qualified for his first Olympics earlier this week, won it on the last run of the contest, capped by a 1440.

He scored 96.25 points, passing Hall. Hall, who was 16th at the 2018 Olympics, would have clinched a spot on the Beijing team with a victory, but he’s still in great shape heading into the last Olympic selection event next month.

DEW TOUR: Full Results | Broadcast Schedule

Stevenson and Forehand became the first U.S. freeskiers to clinch Olympic selection criteria last week, thanks to their world rankings (second and third). All men who qualify in ski slopestyle can also compete in the new Olympic event of ski big air.

The team will be three or four men. Hall is likely to land the third and final objective spot. It’s expected that a fourth man will be taken via coaches’ discretion. Goepper, a two-time Olympic medalist, made his case Friday. His best finish in Olympic selection events coming into this week was 11th.

Goepper was part of another American slopestyle podium sweep at the 2014 Sochi Olympics -- the third time the U.S. achieved the feat in any Winter Olympic event. The gold medalist from Russia, Joss Christensen , announced his retirement a year ago. The silver medalist, Gus Kenworthy , now competes for Great Britain.

Øystein Bråten , the 2018 Olympic champion, will not defend his title as he focuses on freeski filming, according to Norwegian media last spring.

If anybody can prevent a sweep in Beijing, it’s Swiss social media sensation Andri Ragettli . The man known for his floor-is-lava and other unusual training videos won the world championships last season and was not in the Dew Tour field.

Dew Tour continues Saturday and Sunday with snowboarding halfpipe and slopestyle finals, plus the men’s ski halfpipe final.

In Friday’s women’s ski halfpipe final, China’s Eileen Gu , an 18-year-old born in San Francisco to an American father and Chinese mother, won as she continues to look like a threat for three gold medals in Beijing (halfpipe, slopestyle, big air).

After Estonian Kelly Sildaru , 17-year-old American Hanna Faulhaber took third to boost her Olympic qualifying chances.

The U.S. Olympic ski halfpipe qualifying series runs through Jan. 7.

The top two Americans per gender in the world rankings on Jan. 6 make the Olympic team, should they also rank in the top six in the world. Currently, PyeongChang bronze medalist Brita Sigourney is the top American woman at No. 7.

To reach three skiers per gender, the top performers from the six qualifying events will be added, based on a skier’s single best podium result. After that, the teams can reach a maximum of four skiers per gender through discretionary selections.

Through three qualifying events, Sigourney and Faulhaber have a podium result (each with a third place).

Maddie Bowman , the 2014 Olympic champ, announced her retirement last year.

Colby Stevenson Leads U.S. Sweep In Men’s Slopestyle Skiing At The Dew Tour

by  Chrös McDougall

dew tour slopestyle

Colby Stevenson reacts after winning the men's ski slopestyle final at Dew Tour on Dec. 17, 2021 in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Colby Stevenson, Alex Hall and Nick Goepper swept the men’s slopestyle skiing podium at the Dew Tour Friday in Copper Mountain, California, earning crucial Olympic qualifying points with just one opportunity remaining. With two other finals in Olympic events also taking place Friday, Hanna Faulhaber was the only other American to reach the podium, finishing third in women’s halfpipe skiing. Always a major event on the winter sports calendar, the Dew Tour features some of the biggest names in freestyle skiing and snowboarding, and 59 U.S. national team members are among the 200 competing this weekend in Copper Mountain. After this weekend, the U.S. athletes will be down to one final Olympic qualification event at next month’s U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, California. The result marked one of the best in the career of the 24-year-old Stevenson, alongside his 2020 X Games gold medal and 2021 world championships silver medal. On Friday, he scored 96.25 to edge Hall at 95.25. Goepper followed with 89.50 points, followed by fellow American Mac Forehand in fourth at 87.75. Stevenson and Forehand have already met the Olympic qualifying criteria via their world rankings. Hall, a 2016 Youth Olympian, made his senior Olympic debut in 2018 and finished one spot behind Stevenson at last year’s world championships. He’s also a contender in big air skiing. Goepper, an Olympic bronze and silver medalist in 2014 and 2018, is also a four-time X Games champ, including in 2021. Faulhaber, a 2020 Youth Olympian, made her case with a strong 90.75 in the women’s halfpipe event, behind China’s Eileen Gu (96.0) and Estonia’s Kelly Sildaru (93.0). Faulhaber was fourth in the event at the last world championships. The competition continues through Sunday, with finals still to come in men’s and women’s slopestyle snowboarding and men’s halfpipe skiing on Saturday, followed by women’s and men’s halfpipe snowboarding on Sunday. Among those still expected to compete this weekend are Olympic champions Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson in slopestyle snowboarding, and Chloe Kim and Shaun White in halfpipe snowboarding.

Breakpoints

U.s. men sweep dew tour slopestyle.

The men's podium.

It was one, two, three (and four!) for the men’s slopestyle podium at the Dew Tour at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Colby Stevenson was the top qualifier coming into the event, and he held on to the top spot, but not without an exciting back-and-forth with teammate Alex Hall who finished in second, followed by Nick Goepper in third, and Mac Forehand finishing just off the podium in fourth—what a result for the U.S. Freeski Team!

Hall overtook Stevenson at the end of the second round of qualifying, so the pressure was on for Stevenson to retake that top spot. Stevenson upped his third rail trick from qualifiers stomping a 450 out of the donkey at the end of the rail, then added another layer of difficulty.

“I learned a new trick on the first jump—the nosebutter dub 10.” Says Stevenson, “I’ve never done it—super excited about that. I was just doing a nosebutter cork 10, which I was equally as hyped on in the qualifiers, but I knew the dub 10 would score a little higher especially if I could get a Japan grab in it.” And that’s exactly what he did to retake the top spot with a score of 96.25.  “It’s insane to come out here and win a Dew Tour, talk about a dream,” said Stevenson, who adds this win to his first place finish at the 2021 Aspen Grand Prix slopestyle.

Hall, who’s coming off a recent second-place finish at the VISA Big Air in Steamboat, earned second today with a score of 95.25. “It feels good,” he said. “Today I had a little better practice, and all the boys were throwing down and we made it work with the speed. I’m just hyped for Colby [Stevenson]— he laid it down—last guy to go, last run —that’s what you want to see in events, that’s what makes it exciting. He had the best run of the day so I couldn’t be happier for him and I’m stoked for Nick as well, and Mac rounding out in fourth. It’s nice to see the Americans on top!”

2018 Slopestyle Silver medalist Nick Goepper took the third spot with a score of 89.50, followed by Mac Forehand in fourth and a score of 87.75.

In the women's field, weather forced the cancellation of the qualifiers, so the full field of twelve women ran today in finals. Marin Hamill was the top finisher in eighth place, followed by Grace Henderson in ninth, Bella Bacon in 10th, Jay Riccomini in 11th and Marion Balsamo in 12th.

A month and a half after Elliot Cone of Snow Park Technologies described the re-imagined Dew Tour superpipe and slopestyle courses to the Summit Daily, the Dew Tour released its official renderings for the new competition venues on Wednesday.

Cone, Snow Park Technologies and the team at Breckenridge Ski Resort will build a shorter, modified superpipe complete with a double-sided spine at the top and a non-pipe feature at the bottom. These non-traditional, freestyle features will allow skiers and riders to execute tricks outside of the actual superpipe portion of the course.

In the middle of the course, the superpipe itself will be shorter than the kind of traditional halfpipe used at last year’s Dew Tour, which was required to adhere to Olympic qualification standards as the 2017 Dew Tour also served as an Olympic-qualifying event.

At the bottom of the shortened superpipe, the course will conclude by flattening out from a traditional 18-degree slope into what Cone described in October as “tombstone” features. This means athletes, after exiting the superpipe, will have the chance to put the exclamation point on their run via the new feature.

“This year’s superpipe course has been reinvented,” Dew Tour spokeswoman Melissa Gullotti said in a press release Wednesday, “offering a variety of freestyle elements, creating a longer, more diverse competition.”

Both skiers and snowboarders will take to the new superpipe course, including the defending men’s freeski champion Alex Ferreira of Aspen. He’s expected to be challenged by his Aspen Valley friend Torin Yater-Wallace and two-time defending Olympic freeski halfpipe gold medalist David Wise of Reno, Nevada. On the women’s side, the heavy favorite will be the reigning Olympic and Dew Tour champion, Cassie Sharpe.

For the snowboarding competition, Eagle-Vail youngster Jake Pates will look to recapture the magic after he shocked Breckenridge last year with his championship performance. He’ll be up against the best and most inventive challengers from across the globe, however, including Japanese daredevil Ayumu Hirano, Australian star Scotty James and popular American Danny Davis.

The slopestyle course this year will be separated into two sections for the first time since 2016. Separate jibs and jumps sections will take place at different times this year rather than athletes progressing through both sections in one fluid run, as was the case in 2017. Last year, Dew Tour also had to adhere to Olympic-qualifying standards for its slopestyle course.

On the afternoon of Dec. 16, Summit County local stars Chris Corning (second in slopestyle at last year’s Dew Tour), Red Gerard (Olympic slopestyle gold medalist) and Michigan-native Kyle Mack (Olympic big air silver medalist) will compete in the final event of the Dec. 13–16 Dew Tour weekend, the snowboard slopestyle final. The men’s slopestyle jump final is slated to go from noon to 1:15 p.m., while the slopestyle jib final is slated for 1:45–3 p.m.

NBC and NBCSN will televise more than six hours of the Dew Tour, while DewTour.com will live stream all finals events from Dec. 13– 16. Dew Tour will also be streaming finals on Facebook, Periscope, Twitch, Daily Motion, Youtube, TWSnow.com, NewSchoolers.com, Powder.com, AdventureSportsNetwork.com and Snowboarder.com. For the first time Dew Tour will also have a mobile application that will provide live scoring.

Kyle Mack to compete in Streetstyle

Dew Tour announced on Wednesday that Mack will also compete in the after-hours streetstyle competition on Friday night.

The signature Dew Tour event annually sets up shop in what is typically a snow-blanketed downtown Breckenridge, where the world’s top urban skiers and snowboarders showcase their best tricks under the lights in an open-jam format.

Also, for the first time this year, there will be a Girls Who Ride amateur ski and snowboard streetstyle competition. The streetyle course will then open to the public on Saturday and Sunday.
