Step 6. Charms

Charms add elegance and feminine look to Dior bags. And, of course, counterfeiters do their job poorly when copying them. A real charm set consists of four letters forming a name of fashion house and an oval leather tag a bit bigger than the letter 'O'.

Step 7. Leather Tag

Another feature you should pay attention to in a Dior bag is the interior tag which is located inside the purse. Each tag has a rectangular shape with slightly rounded corners. If you see a rectangle with straight angles, it's definetely a fake. Pay attention to the stitches, after 1990 the fashion house started to make them around the leather tag. Before it had only one line of threads on the top. Some models (like Dior Book Tote ) have no stitching at all.

Step 8. Heat Stamp

Heat stamp is found on the front of the interior tag, and depending on the model there can be two or three lines. It says: 'Christian Dior' with 'PARIS' in capital letters a bit below, and for some purses 'MADE IN ITALY' or 'MADE IN SPAIN' beneath (also only capital letters). They can be both stamped with no color or embossed with silver or golden letters. Letters should be clean and easy to read, with no color outside their edges. The logo should be centered and not spread from one side to the other.

Step 9. Date Code

The date code is also located on the leather tag but on the back side. This is a special combination of digits, letters and dashes. Counterfeit manufacturers care less about this detail, so quite many of them get the combination wrong.

The order is typically as follows:

• two letters
• four digits

Every part is separated from another by dashes.

Sometimes in latest collections you might find a date code consisting of two letters and four digits separated by a space, so be careful when authenticating the item yourself.

The date code is not the same as the serial number, all combinations have a certain meaning. The last four digits indicate the month and the year when the bag was manufactured. The first and the third digit indicate the month of production, while the second and the fourth indicate the year. For example, 18-MA-0156 means that the item was manufactured in May 2016.

One more thing to pay your attention to when authenticating a Dior bag is the fonts and the size of the date code. The font should be clear and even, with capital letters only, and no big spaces between dashes and numbers. The code should be strictly in the center of the tag.

Step 10. Fonts and Logo

A fake Dior would reveal itself in unique details that are hard to copy. Fonts on fake items have nothing in common with original Dior. Sloppy and tall symbols indicate a fake. Also, look closely at the logo. On counterfeit goods the logo might be shifted to one of the sides of the leather tag, capital letters may be too big or even blended together. The original logo is accurate, centered and each letter is clear and stands by itself. Step 11. Authenticity Certificates

For proper authentication examining the purse itself is not enough.  Each original purse comes with a card to show its authenticity. They resemble a credit card in a shape but made of more paper-like material. This certificate is an easy way to tell if you're buying a real item, because producers of fake bags don't actually care about the quality of such things. A card is of grey color and comes with an envelope and a care booklet for a new bag, but don't be suspicious if there is no booklet while buying a secondhand item. If you have a booklet, make sure it's in three languages (English, Chinese, and French).

The certificate reads 'Christian Dior' on its front, and has information unique for each item on the back. That's why there are several rectangular boxes (to fill the date and the place of sale). Typically, on counterfeit cards there is one row of two boxes on the bottom, but this is where manufacturers get it wrong. A real card has a spacious rectangular box at the right bottom side (for store stamp) and two smaller boxes on the left (for date and special reference).

Step 12. Dust Bag

The last but not the least thing to examine is a dust bag. Surprisingly, it can tell more about the authenticity of the bag than you think! The look of the dust bag has changed over years but remained of the same exceptional quality. They are made of cotton, but might have different logos and even a picture. Most dust bags now only have the word 'Dior' on the front in grey color.

Older models might come with a dust bag reading 'Christian Dior' and 'PARIS' beneath it. A beautiful Lady Dior in some cases comes with a stunning dust bag with the image of a swan at the right bottom side and the name of the fashion house on the left. The color of the picture and the logo on these dust bags are black. Inside each there is an interior tag to be found.

How To Authenticate Dior Saddle Bag?

1. Authentic Dior Saddle Bag Serial Number Check/Data Code

1) All Dior products as every luxury product have their own date code on the back of the leather tags.  It's made of two numbers, two letters, four numbers (00-XY-0000),  but these things change over the years so it depends. 

2) The letters indicate the factory and the numbers the date, week, or the month of the year when it is produced. The first and the third digit indicate the month of production, while the second and the fourth indicate the year. For example, 18-MA-0156 means that the item was manufactured in May 2016. In the fake Dior saddle bags, the Serial Number doesn't match the year or other elements.

2. The  Inner  Leather Label Tag and Heat Stamp

1) The label tag of real Dior Saddle bag should be fixed on its top and have "Christian Dior" and "Paris"  in front and MADE IN ITALY (or SPAIN) and the code on its back. Some bags (like Gaucho) will have both Christian Dior Paris and MADE IN ITALY written in front. 3.  The Material  of  Dior Saddle   bag

1) The monogram canvas has evolved over the years. it is often the hardest to authenticate. Comparing a vintage piece such as this, dating from 2002, to a contemporary piece from the last 2010s, you'll find some differences.  Firstly,  the width of the left-hand column of the "D" has decreased since then.  Secondly, the spacing of the "r" has changed, as it has moved closer towards the "D". 2) This difference may not be true of all vintage Dior Saddle bags, though. Some editions of the Oblique Saddle bags created between the earliest versions from 1999 and early 00s and the re-issued editions from 2018 and onwards will, however, look more like the latter.

5. The Flap of  Dior Saddle bag  

The size of the flap needs to be smaller than the rest of the handbag so it is symmetrical when it comes to the overall look. The first letter of both the first and last name is noticeably larger than the rest of the text. 

2) The authentic Dior hardware isn't all smooth and shiny but kind of matte and old-looking. The vibrant color that the authentic hardware has is non existent on the right picture as its color is more on the silver side with yellow undertones rather than pure golden color.

3) The original letters are much bigger and thicker while the metal piece that connects both letters together is thinner and longer. The sizing is not accurate by any means on the fake model.

The "D" Appendix

when it comes to the "D" appendix attached to the front flap, the fake bag's is often too thin, tall, or light.

The Zipper 

Look carefully at the stitching of the zipper of the Saddle Dior bag, the logo and the printing which should be very clear and regular, but the quality of the zipper would tell it all. 

The zipper on the authentic Dior Saddle bag rolls up till the very edge of the hardware, while the fake bag's zipper doesn't zip up till the edge of the metal area of where it should be, as the zipper still has a little empty space of where it could move.

8. The Stitching

In every product, especially in the luxury goods, the stitching is one of the most important parts of the item. From the appendices and piping to the inside tag and interior zipper pocket, the stitching should be even and consistent throughout and therefore underlines the excellent craftsmanship of the Dior house.

The fake bag has its belt's text looking too thick, means the fake belt's text is stamped too deep into the belt, while the authentic bag has its text looking thinner, as it is printed less deep into the belt.

2) The stripes on the background can be seen easier on the authentic strap whereas this effect is almost lost on the bottom picture.  

3) The authentic Saddle bag has its "CHRISTIAN" at the top. The fake Dior Saddle bag has its "DIOR" text at the top of the bag. Therefore, the fake bag has its text inverted, as it reads the other way around how it should be read, as on the authentic bag.

10. The Buckle o f  Dior Saddle bag 

1) The golden part is bigger on the authentic strap, which automatically means that it will stay closed for a longer time in a solid condition.

2) The fake bag has its text looking a tiny bit thinner than what it is supposed to look like on the authentic Dior Saddle bag. the fake bag has its buckle's colour too light, while the authentic Dior Saddle bag has its colour a bit darker than the fake bag's text. 

11. The Lining  o f  Dior Saddle bag 

Authentic Dior linings come in many colors and fabrics. The best thing is inspecting the lining for bad stitching and other imperfections that are usually always there.

12. Authenticity Card   o f  Dior Saddle bag 

1) The real bag should come with a small envelope containing a grey, watermarked Authenticity Card and a Care Booklet, each of them translated into three languages (English, Chinese and French). 

2) Authenticity Card should read Christian Dior either in black or gold on one side, and on the reverse side. Authentic cards have two small spaces and one large rectangular space for store details and the date to be stamped.  The numbers on the authenticity card are the style number for the bag you bought. 

3) The font is almost the same on both tags but the letters of the word "Boutique" and "Paris" are thicker on the fake tag when they are supposed to be thin with bigger spacing between one another. 

13. The Box and Dust bag

1) Look carefully these details and you will have the idea how the real look like so you will immediately know when you face a fake one. The differences are in the material, color of the dust bag, the size and font of the printed Dior logo in it.

The first time that I went to China, right after leaving one of my friends told me:

“Don’t come back to Italy without checking out at least one of the fake markets in Beijing.”

Fake market? What did that mean?

I never heard of them, and didn’t know of the existence of this parallel world until one day, at the end of my lessons at the Beijing Language and Culture University , with one of my colleagues I headed toward one of the most famous fake markets in Beijing, the Silk Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie, in Chinese), in the Chaoyang district .

It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my first trip to China. After weeks of frustration in university, finally a little shopping and entertainment.

The Silk Street Market is an actual building of fakes, each floor with specific products, from shoes to clothing, to electronics and toys, to perfume to accessories for the home. A shopping mall from which it is impossible to leave without making at least one purchase among the thousands of articles offered.

Once inside, you’ll be fascinated and even a little perplexed since you’ll ask yourself how all this is possible. But right afterwards you too won’t be able to help but wander around in search of “bargains”.

In the Chinese fake market you can find everything, but here are a few rules to avoid coming home to find out you’ve been “ripped off”.

First rule: prices and the art of haggling

The first rule of these markets is: HAGGLE; the Chinese love to haggle, and once inside, you’ll find that all the linguistic difficulties you had just days before, magically disappear.

As an expert in the art of haggling, the merchants of various stores will try at the outset to offer prices that although seemingly reasonable to the eyes of a Westerner, can actually be bargained down since the first price is usually five to ten times more than the final one.

Here are some basic fundamentals for bargaining at fake markets:

• Smile, keep calm, and don’t feel guilty about wanting to haggle. Here, if you don’t haggle you’re considered an idiot;
• If you already know the type of product you want to buy, get an idea of the actual price on Taobao before going to the market, so that you’ll have a base price;
• As was already said, the initial price offered by the vendors in the fake markets are – usually, – five or ten times more than the “final” price. So if the initial price is 100 Yuan, you respond with 10. If the vendor tells you to take a hike (it can happen if you offer a price that too low even for them), try with another (there are usually many vendors selling the same product) and begin from 20. The vendor will offer 90, you 21, etc;
• Halfway through the transaction, pretend to walk away. If the vendor hasn’t yet reached their final price (or the price beyond which they’re not inclined to go so as not to take a loss) they’ll try to keep you from going;
• Bargain with other vendors to find out what is the lowest price they’re willing to go (as I already said, there are many stands that offer the same product);
• Tell them that they can’t cheat you because you live in China and know the prices;
• At the end of the day, if you’re a Westerner, in many cases you won’t get the best possible price since many merchants would rather lose a sale than have their final price become known to tourists. The only way to “resolve” this problem, if price is important to you, is to get your Chinese friend to go in your place. However this will make you miss out on all the fun!

Second rule: pay attention to the quality

Inside the market you’ll find differing qualities for every product; although they’re all imitations, often the first product that they’ll offer you will be of low quality and/or defective (such as a shirt with markings or holes).

Third rule: always pay using the local currency

Always pay using Chinese Yuan. Even though all types of currencies are accepted in this type of market, the prices offered in Yuan will always be better than in Euros or Dollars; so I recommend that you only use Yuan.

Another bit of advice is to avoid using credit cards since quite often, especially in the past, many have found that their card has been cloned.

Fourth rule: don’t follow vendors to an isolated place

At times vendors will say something like:

“I don’t have this in that color here (or this size, etc), follow me for a second and I’ll get it for you.”

Even though it is possible that the request is genuine, it is also possible that following the vendor into his store you’ll find yourself in front of two hooligans that will relieve you of your wallet.

China, in general, is not at all a dangerous place, but the rules of common sense still apply!

Where to find fake markets in Beijing?

Fake markets aren’t present in all of China, because being an exclusively tourist attraction they are concentrated especially in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

As far as Beijing goes, the most visited one with the widest variety of products is the Silk Street Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie) located at 8 Xiushui East Street, in the Chaoyang district.

To get there, take Line 1 of the metro to the Yonganli stop and follow the signs for the Silk Market (exit A).

This is the third tourist attraction in Beijing and was opened at the beginning of the Eighties and today is host to more than a thousand vendors inside.

After the conversion of the Ya Show of San Li Tun to the fake market shopping center, the second most famous fake market in Beijing is probably the Pearl Market (红桥市场, Hongqiao Shichang), located at 46 Tiantan East Street.

To get there, take Line 5 of the metro to the Tiantan Dongmen stop and take exit B.

This market is visited by more than a million tourists a year. Unlike the other merchants, this one also specializes in the sale of pearls: pearl merchants are found on the third, fourth and fifth floor of the building.

Besides clothing, shoes, electronics, watches and silk, at this market you can also buy food, especially fish, from frutti di mare to the most valuable ones.

Where to find fake markets in Shanghai?

In Shanghai the situation is more or less the same: the same products, same quality, almost the same prices (in my opinion the prices are a little higher in Shanghai).

Just as in Beijing, a tourist in Shanghai should include on their list of attractions to see at least one of the large markets in Shanghai .

The first is the Pudong Market (浦东亚太新阳市场 , Pudong Yatai Xinyang), located at 2002 Shiji Dadao, in the Pudong Xin district.

To get there take Line 2 of the metro to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stop. The market is located inside the station itself.

If you want to go by taxi, the easiest thing to do is have the driver leave you in the square alongside the entrance of the metro, asking in fact to be dropped off at the Shanghai Science and Tecnology Museum station (in Chinese: 科技馆地铁站, Kejiguan Ditie Zhan).

The second market I’d recommend is the Fenshine Market (风向市场, Fengxiang Shichang) at 580 Nanjing West Road [ Update : At the moment this market is close], at the intersection with Chengdu Road. This market is more centrally located than the first and can be reached by foot in about fifteen minutes from the Nanjing West Road metro stop (line 2), or on foot for fifteen minutes from the stop at People’s Square, exit 11 (line 1, 2 and 8).

Here you might find vendors who will ask you to go to the “higher floors of the building”: don’t worry! That’s where you’ll find the best quality merchandise, the kind most appealing to we Westerners.

Regardless of which market you decide to visit depending on budget and availability, in my opinion this is one of the experiences you have to do at least once in your life: first of all you’ll have a good time, whether in the end you decide to buy a bag or just a magnet; after which you can also discover a different world, a different China that isn’t possible to find in any other place.

And trust me, once you enter, you surely won’t be disappointed.

So, what are you waiting for?

You can buy electronics as well, but personally I prefer to do so in Hong Kong instead. There’s no import taxes and you can buy genuine products at a lower price.

Shirts can cost everything between 120 RMB – 500 RMB, from my experience. If you go to a decent tailor at Nan Pu Da Qiao in Shanghai, for example, you shouldn’t pay more than 200 RMB for a cotton shirt of normal quality.

Some other places you should check out are the Taihua market(泰华) and Xinzhongxin（新中心). Here, you’ll find much clothes, shoes, handbags, and more. It’s similar to the Silk market in Beijing.

Probably yes

I worked in Beijing some years ago – now back in Germany. During my time in Beijing I ckecked out all kind of fake markets.

Best expierence was to go to so called “Hidden fake markets”.

Those shops that are usually near to the big fake markets . They are not marked as shops from outside. Inside you can find a lot different fake stuff – normally with a lot better quality then the stuff from Silk Market or Pearl Market. Normally the prices are fix – you can not bargain. But the prices are realistic – no stupid fake prices like the prices from Silk Market or Pearl Market.

Where you can find the hidden shops is a secret. I found nothing about that in the internet but most of the Airline Crew Members know about these shops. Everytime I was in one of those shops I saw some Airline crew members shopping there too.

580 closed a couple years back and will never re-open. And 360 market up near the railway station (which was not mentioned above) also kicked the knock-off vendors out of its basement floor. Those from 580 and 360 moved into Science & Tech around 2017. 360 does still have quite a few vendors in its upper floors for electronics, eyeglasses, etc. So Science & Tech is basically the main source in Shanghai now. One last location…South Bund Fabric Market….quite a few tailors (it’s where I have my dress shirts and cashmere coats made) and no shortage of knock-off clothing.
