A Disney Cruise Line vacation is a great family vacation option, and the consumption of alcohol can enhance the experience for adults. Disney Cruise Line  Alcohol Policy

As a guest on Disney Cruise Line, you must comply with all laws, policies, and procedures regarding the consumption and distribution of alcohol. You may not provide any other person with alcohol, regardless of their age.

Is alcohol included in the price of a Disney cruise?

Disney cruises are nearly all-inclusive, but some beverages are an additional charge.

Alcohol is not included in the price of a Disney cruise , nor is tipping the server or bartender. These drinks are charged to your stateroom account, and paid out-of-pocket or with Disney onboard credit . 

The following refreshments are provided at no additional cost:

• Soft drinks, coffee, and tea served at meals
• Non-alcoholic drinks at the Beverage Station
• Drinks served at Vibe teen lounge

The following beverages are subject to an additional charge:

• Alcoholic beverages, bottled water, smoothies, and specialty coffees offered during meals
• Beer, wine, cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, and bottled water available in lounge areas

What’s the drinking age onboard a Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line’s alcohol policy states that all guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol unless covered by a special exception (outlined below). Those who appear to be under the age of 30 will be asked for ID when purchasing alcohol.

Can 18-year-olds drink on Disney Cruise?

The drinking age on all of Disney Cruise Line’s ships is 21, but 18- to 20-year-olds cruising with Disney may be permitted to consume alcohol on these itineraries:

• Round-trip cruises departing from European countries with a lower drinking age: Parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form which permits an 18- to 20-year-old to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.
• Round-trip cruises departing from Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney: Passengers 18 and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages with no need for parental consent/presence.
• One-Way cruises between Hawaii and Australia:  Parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form which permits an 18- to 20-year-old to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.

Rules may change from time to time; always check the current policy to ensure you have the latest information.

These policies and exceptions are designed to help Disney’s younger guests enjoy their cruise while still respecting the laws of their home countries.

To be clear, onboard drinking age policies are based solely on the country the cruise is departing from — not on the country of an individual passenger’s citizenship. Of course, all guests must have a valid photo ID to be served.

It is important to note that all adult-only areas are available to guests 18 and older, including the nightclubs and lounges, spa, fitness center, Quiet Cove Pool, and the two adult-only restaurants. Serenity Bay is a private, gorgeous beach on Castaway Cay and is only available to adults 18 and older.

Even though Disney Cruises allows guests 18 and older in the adult areas of the ship, the legal drinking age is still 21 in these areas.

Can Guests bring their own alcohol on Disney Cruises?

Disney Cruise Line guests are permitted to bring beer and wine on board the ship, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

• The guest is limited to six beers (12 ounces or less) or two bottles of wine or champagne (750 ml or less) at embarkation and each port of call . In other words, you are welcome to replenish your supply of alcohol while the ship is docked (as long as it’s within limits).
• Guests must pack all alcoholic beverages in carry-on luggage. Checked baggage is not allowed to contain alcoholic beverages.
• If guests bring their own alcohol on board, they can consume it in their stateroom or stateroom veranda or bring their wine or champagne bottle to the dining room.
• Guests who wish to consume wine or champagne in the dining room will be charged a corking fee of $25.00 per bottle.
• By following these guidelines, guests can enjoy their favorite drinks while sailing with Disney Cruise Line.

Here are some more things to keep in mind with alcohol on Disney Cruises:

• Alcohol inside checked luggage will be removed and will not be returned. Compensation will not be given.
• Passengers must bring alcohol onboard in the original, unopened container. Broken seals and partially used bottles are prohibited.
• The ship will not allow you to bring in more than two bottles of wine or champagne, or more than six cans of beer, and your losses will not be refunded. Do not try to bring in more than the allowed amount.
• Passengers cannot consume alcohol brought on board in the lounge or public areas.
• The cruise line will store liquors, spirits, and excess wine and beer purchased at the ports until the cruise ends.
• The guests are responsible for retrieving stored alcohol at the end of the cruise. It is Disney’s policy to throw out unclaimed items without compensation.
• Disney Cruise Line may change their alcohol policy at any time without notice.

Compared to other cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line has one of the most generous policies regarding bringing alcohol on board. Following these guidelines, you’ll be able to save money on your Disney cruise while enjoying your favorite alcoholic beverage. So put your favorite drink on your packing list !

Does Disney Cruise Line have a Drink Package? 

Disney Cruise Line does not have an all-you-can-drink alcohol package like some other cruise lines. However, they offer a wine package that may be a better value for you, depending on how many bottles you plan to order.

The Classic Wine Package includes three to seven bottles of wine, and the Premium Wine Package consists of three to seven bottles of wine with a higher quality selection.

If you do not finish the bottle during dinner, your server will save the bottle for you. It will be ready and waiting for you when you go to dinner the next day. Or you can ask your server to cork it up for you and take it back to your stateroom or another bar to enjoy.

Beverage Tastings Events on Disney Cruise Ships

Beverage tastings on Disney cruises allow guests to sample select adult beverages and learn about different types of wine, beer, spirits, and more. The seminars vary based on ship and itinerary, so check the daily onboard activities for times and locations.

A nominal fee is associated with beverage tastings, and availability is limited. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to participate. Events are subject to change or cancellation without notice.

Reservations for beverage tastings can be made online through the Planning Center or at any time during your cruise. We recommend that you reserve your spot as early as possible due to the popularity of these events. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the reserved experience. Guests will be charged the full price if cancellation falls within 24 hours before the event starts.

If you’re looking to save money on wine while on your Disney Cruise, check out the “Sommelier Bin” on Disney’s cocktail menus.

For just $10 per glass, you can choose from a selection of white, red, or sparkling wines. Your bartender will select a wine for you based on the available open bottles.

Try the Disney Drink of the Day

Disney Cruise Lines offers a different Drink of the Day daily, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions available. This will be shown daily in your Navigator App , but if you don’t know what it is, just ask any of the bar staff.

Since the alcoholic versions cost around $6.25 with a gratuity, the Drink of the Day saves you money. Although it is impossible to predict which drink of the day will be available on your Disney Cruise, certain ones are offered more frequently than others.

Some popular Drink of the Day choice includes Captain’s Mai Tai, Espresso Chiller, High Tide, Melon Margarita, Paradise Punch, Sunken Treasure, and Yellow Bird. For those seeking a non-alcoholic drink, options may include Parrot Song and Passion Cream Freeze, Mint Tea Punch, and Lava Smoothie.

Can you buy alcohol in Castaway Cay?

Guests can purchase alcoholic drinks at several bars on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The island’s four beach bars – Conched Out Bar , Heads Up Bar, Sand Bar, and Castaway Air Bar – serve beer, cocktails, and frozen drinks.

Castaway Cay Tip : Among the most requested beverages on Castaway Cay is the Konk Cooler, a combination of rum, orange juice, and passion fruit. Try it!

Many of the drinks throughout your cruise are complimentary. However, all alcoholic drinks and certain beverages depending on where they are served will be charged to your stateroom.

There is a wide range of alcoholic beverages available on the different Disney cruises. These include a vast selection of beer, wines, and cocktails. 

Guests can order beers from both popular American and international brands. Wine choices include red wines and white wines, and you can find a Champagne bar in most ships. 

If you are looking for a non-alcoholic beverage, there are tons of options for virgin cocktails and mocktails.

You will find the beverage station on Deck 9 of the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic. On the Disney Fantasy and Dream , there are two Beverage Stations opposite each other on Deck 11. These stations are open 24 hours a day and offer these drinks free of charge:

• HiC Pink Lemonade
• Fuse Ice Tea
• Sprite Zero
• Hot Chocolate
• Assorted Teas

Note that these drinks are only free from the beverage station or in restaurants.

These Disney Tervis Cups are a great thing to have so that you can just go and grab a drink from the pool deck for free and take it to your stateroom or anywhere else you want to enjoy it on the ship! 

Disney Cruise lines have one of the most generous alcohol policies of any cruise line. In the past, you could take any amount of wine or beer onboard.

Even though those days are over, you can still take your own wine or beer onto a Disney cruise subject to certain limits.

Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port-of-call.

For the Australia and New Zealand Cruises guests aged 18 and over have this allowance too.

This means that you can take 2 standard bottles of wine or a 6 pack of beer on board with you on embarkation day.

You can also bring up to 2 bottles of wine and a 6 pack of beer on board with you at each port of call.

Always pack your wine bottles in your carry-on luggage. If you put them in your checked luggage they will be found and held until the end of the cruise.

In cruises from the US, the drinking age is 21 and older.

But what about cruises departing from any European country which has a lower drinking age, such as Great Britain, or Spain? Parents or guardians can sign a Beverage Consent Form to allow their 18 to 20-year-old children to consume alcohol whilst in the adult’s presence.

Also, for round-trip cruises from Aukland, Brisbane Melbourne, and Sydney guests 18 years and older can purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent.

For repositioning cruises between Hawaii and Australia, parents or guardians can sign a Beverage Consent Form to allow their 18 to 20-year-old children to consume alcohol whilst in the adult’s presence.

Disney Cruise Lines has a very generous alcohol policy which allows you to bring a limited amount of alcohol onto the ship with you.

However, there are always going to be those guests who try and beat the system and sneak alcohol onto a Disney Cruise. Just don’t. Please don’t.

If you look online I am sure you will find many tips and tricks about how to smuggle alcohol onto a cruise ship. Some people might even succeed and not get caught.

However, most will be caught . The cruise lines have many years of experience with this and your bags are checked.

When they find it they will confiscate it. Not just hold it for you. They will confiscate it.

Just don’t even try to sneak drinks on a Disney Cruise. It’s the wrong thing to do.

Disney Cruise Drinks Packages

Most non-alcoholic beverages are included in your cruise fee. While there are no all-inclusive Disney Cruise drink options, guests can make significant savings by choosing the beer mug with a discount and wine package bundles:

The prices of these drinks packages usually mean that you have to have at least five and often more alcoholic drinks per day to reach the break-even point.

For example the Princess Cruises Drinks Package .

Disney doesn’t offer any drinks packages that are comparable to the ones on other cruise lines such as Princess , Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, or Celebrity.

However, Disney already offers free soda and many of the nonalcoholic drinks that other cruise lines charge for.

The Disney Cruise beer package allows you to choose from ten different beers, including Corona, Heineken, and Budweiser. Each of these comes in a six-pack set for six beers for the price of five.

You can also purchase a beer glass which is 21 oz large. Usually, the amount served is 16oz, but if you buy the beer glass for $15.25 each of the servings you will get will be 21 oz, but for the price of 16 oz.

So each time you have a beer you are getting a 5 oz extra drink for no extra cost.

You do not have to carry your glass around with you as your Bar Tender will give you a token that you can exchange for a clean glass each time. You can also take the glass home as a souvenir.

The only thing that Disney Cruise Line offers which is any kind of drinks package is the Wine Package.

Disney Cruise Wine Package

There are two Disney Cruise Wine Packages offered. The Classic and the Premium Wine Package. 

They come with a 18% service charge that will be added to all Disney Cruise Wine Packages. You order between 3 and 7 bottles, depending upon how many you think you will consume. 

If you do not finish the bottle during dinner it will be saved for you. When you go to dinner the next day it will be ready and waiting for you. 

Or, you can just ask your Server to cork it up for you and you can take it back to your stateroom or another bar to enjoy!

You can purchase the Wine Package via your Disney Cruise Personalizer before you sail. Once you get on board you will see tables set out which explain the package and let you sign up.

Alternatively, you can wait until you dine in your first rotational dining restaurant and your Server will explain how it works and you can order from them.

You will see at the bottom of the French Quarter Bar Menu that there is a Sommelier Bin. This is a great way to save money on wine if you are prepared to take a bit of a gamble on what you will get.

Each glass of wine in the Sommelier Bin is $10. You ask your Server for a glass of white, red, or sparkling wine.

They will choose one for you based on which bottles they already have open.

You could get lucky and get a much more expensive wine for a bargain price.

This is how I realized I particularly enjoyed the Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label.

I would never usually order a $24 glass of wine, but I managed to score this win several times!

Make sure you Tip your Disney Server well as this certainly helps!

Bars and Lounges on Board

When you dine in one of the main restaurants such as Animator’s Palate or Tiana’s Place you will have a large selection of drinks to choose from – some free and some for an extra charge.

The same also applies to Remy and Palo which are adult-only restaurants for passengers 18 and older. 

If you are over 21, you can check out one of the different bars, pool bars, lounges, and nightclubs for a unique selection of Disney cruise drinks:

All of the soda types that are available on the pool deck for free are also not charged for in the restaurants. So for instance, if you want an iced tea or glass of Sprite this is complimentary.

If you want a soda that is not on that list, for example, a Root Beer, there will be a charge for this.

Your Server will very quickly learn your free drink preferences and these will usually be waiting for you when you arrive at your table.

Many people choose to drink wine at dinner.

You can bring your bottle (for a corkage charge of $27), or order from your Wine Package.

There is also a Wine List available with bottles or wines available by the glass.

You can order any cocktail you want, but there will also be a special selection on your menu each day with drinks chosen to compliment the food and theme of the restaurant.

There are always two that are alcoholic with another non-alcoholic choice.

There are also specialty coffees and liquors which are an extra charge.

Ride a wave of relaxation while you sip on a cocktail at the breezy and iconic Currents. It is an open-air bar situated high on Deck 13 of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

As an adult-exclusive bar, Currents offers breathtaking views of the shore, sea, and sunset. Their beverage selection ranges from classics like a Blue Hawaiian to trendy cocktails like the Smoky Melon.

Keg & Compass is an Old World pub on the Disney Wish. It is an adult-exclusive lounge inspired by the swashbuckling style of an 1800s sailor’s map room. Guests can relax with their favorite drink in a stately parlor surrounded by period-style oil paintings and homages to Disney characters. 

At Keg & Compass, you can kick back and watch live sports while enjoying a specialized selection of custom craft beers and an assortment of liquors, wines, and cocktails.

If you enjoy draught beer you should seriously think about getting the Disney Cruise Beer Glass.

Here you pay $16.95 for a 22 oz glass where the standard size is 16 oz. Each time you get a draft beer you will get the larger amount, but only pay for 16 oz. So each time you are getting an additional 6 oz for the same price

The Disney Cruise beer glass is an attractive souvenir to take home.

You don’t have to carry the glass with you all the time. Once you have finished your beer you can get a token in exchange for the glass.

You just pick up a clean new one at the end of your cruise to take home with you.

Disney doesn’t have an official policy on this, but take it that you really shouldn’t give alcohol as a Fish Extender Gift.

Aside from the difficulty of bringing alcohol onto the ship (don’t try and sneak 10 liquor miniatures on hoping security won’t find it), you leave gifts outside stateroom doors so anyone could have access to it.

That person could be under the legal drinking age. So just don’t do it.

If you are over 21 you can enjoy one of a number of different beverage tastings on board a Disney cruise ship .

You can book via your Cruise Personalizer online, or wait until you get onboard.

It is usually advisable to book prior to your cruise as these do sell out.

The Disney Cruise Beverage Tastings have limited capacity and always sell out.

They range in price from $45 to $70. You have to be 21 or over to attend (or 18 in Australia).

The water on all of the Disney ships is filtered and is safe to drink. However, I know some people only want to drink bottled water.

If you have to have your bottled water fix, Disney allows you to bring on as much as you can possibly carry.

A 6-pack of bottled water costs $9.75 and a 24-pack is $39 on all Disney ships.

This does not include tax and gratuity.

If you think you are going to buy bottled water on a Disney cruise you can save a lot of money by bringing it on yourself.

If you want some very average drip coffee you can get that free 24 hours a day from the beverage station on the pool deck.

The best place for coffee is the Cove Cafe which is on Deck 9 of Disney Wonder and Magic, Deck 11 of Disney Dream and Fantasy and Deck 13 of Disney Wish.

The Vista Cafe is open to all and is found only on the Disney Fantasy and Dream on Deck 4.

You can find the best Cove Cafe on the Disney Wonder as it has recently been refurbished. I think they have done an amazing job and it is such a nice place to spend some relaxing time.

You can get a Coffee Card from any of the Cast Members in the cafes.

For every 5 specialty coffees that you buy, you get the 6th one free.

Coffee Cards are specific to that cruise and expire when you leave the ship.

Have I sometimes chanced it and brought one from a previous cruise?

Definitely.

And I have never had it turned down, even though certainly this is a breach of their policy.

The coffee from the pool deck and Cabanas buffet from the machine are not great.

However, it is free.

The coffee in the rotational dining restaurants has improved in recent years and now is pretty decent. The regular coffee in Palo and Remy is good.

The Senses Juice Bar is on the Disney Fantasy and the Dream. It is located next to the Disney Cruise Ship Gym on Deck 11.

The Juice Bar is one of the quieter places to relax on Disney Fantasy and Dream. There are lots of options for a healthy juice or smoothie.

Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice is available for $4,75.

Or the X Press: Restore Harmony and Balance which is a blend of Strawberry, Avocado, Mint, Red Beets, Apple, and Goji Berries is priced at $8.75.

One of my favorites is the GetUp Restore which is Banana, Blueberry, Strawberry, Almond Milk, Sunflower Seeds, and Turmeric Powder. This is priced at $8.75.

Tips for Making the Most of Drinks on a Disney Cruise

There are plenty of tried-and-true ways that passengers can save money on drinks while on a Disney cruise. Let’s take a look at some of the most effective tips for ordering specialty drinks and excellent cocktails for less: 

If you booked a concierge-level room on a Disney Cruise, you can benefit from different amenities and free drinks.

While alcohol is not free on any Disney Cruise, guests can take advantage of the daily happy hours to save money on beverage costs. 

Browse through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to find out where and when happy hour is. Depending on the bar, select drinks can go as low as half-price.

A Guide to Drinking on a Disney Cruise

UPDATE: New Beverage Policy Limits Carry-on qualities and Increase to Corkage Fee – effective 9/30/15.

The Beverage Policy

There are many places onboard a Disney ship for an adult to order a drink.  While the ship may sail to ports where the drinking age is under 21, the drinking age on a Disney Cruise Line ship is 21 ; what is done while in port is another story. Just don’t be stupid — laws are much different in the ports than at home.  It is also worth noting that there is an exeption to the drinking age for roundtrip sailings departing a European port.  On these sailings, guests 18 and over may purchase alcohol while in their presence onboard providing that a beverage consent form was completed during check-in.

Disney Cruise Line is very gracious and permits guests to bring a limited amount of wine, champagne or beer onboard at embarkation.  On other cruise lines, they will confiscate your beverages and return them at debarkation. This privilege does come with a few rules.  First, all alcohol must be carried on with you at embarkation. Any beverages found in checked luggage will be removed, stored, and returned at the end of the cruise. The main reason for this is that the glass bottles can break and ruin not only your clothes, but other guests’ luggage.  No one wants to start their cruise doing laundry when they could be enjoying the Sail Away Deck Party , or worse, miss dinner. The other rule is that any alcohol brought on board may not be consumed in any lounge or public areas. The exception to this rule allows for bottles of wine to be taken to dinner for a $20 $25 corking fee.

Any liquor purchased in port may be brought onboard and consumed in your stateroom.  However, any alcohol purchased onboard from the ship’s duty free store (see below for a price list) will be held until the last night of your cruise.

Under the new guest alcohol policy, any liquor purchased in port will be checked when returning to the ship and will be available for pickup near the gangway on debarkation day. This is also the procedure for duty free liquor purchases from WhiteCaps.

Whomever said that there is no such thing is a free drink is wrong.  Well, technically, they are right, but I’m not going to get into that discussion.  Complimentary drinks are available during Castaway Club Reception, and the Captain’s cocktail party, usually held on formal night in the Atrium Lobby .

Drink of the Day

Each day you can find the featured Drink of the Day on your Personal Navigator .  As of January 2017, the drinks are $4.75 plus tax and 15% gratuity, which make them $5.46. The non-alcholoic drinks of the day are $4.25 plus tax making them $4.89.Some examples are listed below:

Drink Specials

From time to time, there will be unadvertised drink specials. For example, one afternoon while relaxing on the pool deck, my wife ordered the Drink of the Day. The waitress mentioned there was a current special for 2 for 1 Mai Tais for $5.50 ( around $6.50 with tax and gratuity ), so she got those instead.  On Castaway Cay, there is an announced 2 for 1 special around 2 PM or later.  This past June (2012), the offer began at 2:15 PM and lasted for an hour.  The best part was this was valid for any drink! This is a great deal if you get the Drink of the Day – two drinks for $3.95 $4.50 (plus 15% gratuity of course)!!

The Beer Mug

For $16.95 you can buy a 22 oz. Disney Cruise Line, glass beer mug with the beer of your choice. For the remainder of your cruise, you can have it refilled for the price of a 16 oz! The bars will exchange the mug for a beer mug token when you are finished to take the weight and responsibility of the the glass mug off your hands until you are ready for a refill. It is also nice at the end of your cruise to exchange for a clean mug to pack in your luggage.

Various draft beer is available (availability seems to vary) at various locations including O’Gills and Currents up on the pool deck.

Drink Mixers

There are an assortment of mixers available for free.  Up on the pool deck or in Cabanas you can fill can get various Coke products.

• Fuse Ice Tea (Replaced Nestea)
• Sprite Zero

Coffee and hot water are also available on the pool deck with plain milk and half and half. Cabanas, only when serving food, offers Minute Maid brand Orange, Apple and Cranberry Juice.

Skyline Passport

Skyline on the [Disney_Fantasy] offers a passport card for $59.  The Skyline Passport card entitles you to seven hand-crafted martinis, themed to each to the cities of the seven rotating European skylines.  Breaking this down, you will get seven martinis for the price of six.

Onboard Duty Free Shopping

This list will give you an idea of prices Disney charges onboard. You may not be able to drink your onboard purchases until after the cruise.. Keep in mind that prices and availability could change without notice and usually do depending on what ship you are on and what they have in stock.

Here’s a question: when you purchase a wine package, I believe that DCL adds the 15% gratuity at that point. Thing is, on the following nights, do people still give some level of gratuity? I personally did, as I felt bad not to give anything at all on subsequent nights (especially the Skyline Passport book)… But I’m curious to hear about other experience. Thanks!!

Great question. From what I’ve witnessed the Assistant Server does all the work when you have a wine package. One cruise we hardly saw the assistant as he was busy with the wine at 2 other tables. I would imagine any extra would be taken care of in the final tips.

As for the Skyline passport, we did no discover this until night 4, but my wife plans on getting it in December.

Are there virgin (non-alcoholic) versions of majority of the drinks on board? Ex: Virgin bahama mama, virgin bay breeze. If so is there an age policy as to who gets to drink virgin drinks. I think this will come to the bartender. A friend of mine has purchased multiple passports and redeemed two at a time for her and her husband. I would ask first. The other thing to note I’d that you do not need to order the specific country martini, you can order off the menu.

The price is for the package, not per bottle. Your assistant server will bring the bottle to the table and serve you.

I just came back from a trip on the Disney Wonder and soda water is now available in the soda machines by the pool, so you can avoid carrying extra lbs on the carry on luggage.

I was on the Magic in May and they had plain soda water good for a mixer at the drink station. First time I’ve seen that.

That is correct, as of September 2015 , guests can only carry on a limited amount of beer and wine at each port. Liquor is not permitted and will be held until the final morning of the cruise.

Are we allowed to bring on a bottle of alcohol that has been opened?

Sure. They don’t inspect things. Your alcohol must be in your carry on. As you go thru security, your bag goes thru a security X-ray. You pick it up, and go up the escalator to into the port. That’s it! No one pulls out the bottles to inspect them. As long as your alcohol is tightly closed, you’ll be fine. Enjoy 🙂

Monica, you are only limited to what you can carry on the ship.

DCL asks that all alcohol carried on with you is consumed in your stateroom aside from bringing a bottle of wine to dinner.

On a couple of our cruises some guests were taking their own beer to the pool decks and into the bars on the ship. I’m sure this type of activity will eventually cause DCL to stop the ‘bring your own’ privilege. Please try to confine your alcohol containers to your staterooms. Bring a refillable container and carry that around.

Yes, you will need to carry anything you bring in the ship until about 1:30 when the staterooms are available.

We still have several souvenir cups and mugs from the daily mixed drink special and beer refill special from a previous cruise. Could we just take those with us? We never use them and would just end up with more glasses taking up space in my cabinets.

It is quite common for people to bring the beer mugs back with them on future sailings.

Yes, soda is free at the drink stations by the pool around the clock. Additionally, you can use the drink stations in the buffets when open. Soda is also free in the dining rooms. You will however pay for soda if you order it at a bar or in the theatre.

Not bad, but not necessary. All you need to do it stop at any bar and ask for wine glasses. Fill up in your room, and take the glasses of wine to dinner. We’ve done this in the MDRs and at Palo. We’ve also had cruises where our stateroom host has left us fresh glasses as well! No need to hide the wine in a shroud of a coffee mug 🙂

In terms of the cola options at the drink station, no. However, some of the soda options like sprite are caffeine free.

Yes, they will. We typically bring 2 and Sunday are bringing on 3. We’ve not had an issue in the past.

Disney asks that you consume your personal alcohol in the privacy of your stateroom with the exception of bringing a bottle of wine to dinner. By this guideline it would be considered wrong, but at the end of the day it is your decision.

I am traveling on the Disney Magic in 2 weeks. I am familiar with the alcohol policy but had to book transportation from Ft. Lauderdale to Port of Miami privately. Private car was cost prohibitive and shuttles do not stop at liquor store. However, the shuttle company told me that there is a liquor store in the Port that I can walk to from where the Shuttle drops me off. Sure. You may want to look into ordering 2 wine packages versus adding on a bottle each night.

We are taking the Disney shuttle from airport to Port Canaveral. If we put bottles in our checked bag would we be able to take it out and put in our carry on luggage or do they deliver your luggage to your statroom?

No, I believe once you check your bags at the airport the next time you will see them is in your stateroom.

You could always have a separate bag checkin on the airline that doesn’t have the DCL tag on it. Before heading to the shuttle, go to baggage claim and get your bag, then treat it like a carry on for the remainder of your trip to the ship.

For you beer drinkers that also fly to Orlando, the last 2 cruises we went on we would take an extra suitcase with us, pack very lightly in any combination. For example, our kids would have a suitcase for all thier clothes, and my wife and I would have a suitcase each packed about half full. Once in Orlando we would pack all of our clothes into one suitcase, leaving us with and extra suitcase that was now empty. We then filled the empty suitcase with our beer / liquor / coolers for the week. At the port, the luggage people will take your suitcases to your room for you (the ones with the clothes) and then all you will have left over to carry on will be your suitcase with the booze in it. Works well at the end of the cruise / trip as well to bring back any items you may have bought, or simply put one inside the other and return home.

@Chris This sounds like a great idea. Is there a size restriction for the suitcase you bring on with the booze as a carry on?

Not that I’m aware of. We used the smaller of the two we have but it still fit 3 cases of beer into it. (72 cans)

You can do that, but you can also order those at the bar in Cabanas or even the Cove Cafe. It is available during breakfast to answer your question.

Just got back from a Disney Dream cruise and learned a handy lesson. As mentioned here you can use the soda station for ice/mixers near the pool, then take them to your room to add alcohol. For efficiency we put the alcohol in our cups (we purchased insulated Disney Tervis mugs w/ lids on-board, but you could bring your own or use any cup) in our room, then brought it to the pool and got ice and mixers. Technically it’s a violation of policy to consume it outside of your stateroom, but its discrete and we never saw anyone questioned.

Can you drink alcohol you’ve brought on the beach at Castaway Cay?

DCL’s beverage policy states that any alcohol brought on board may not be consumed in any lounge or public area.

This blog is very informative – thanks to the owner and to everyone who has supplied answers! Would someone please address how to pay for drinks onboard? I’m sure they can be charged to rooms, but I’d prefer not to do that. Has anyone had experience with using cash or credit cards at point of service? I intend to purchase Disney gift cards at a discount from Sam’s Club, and they say they can be used on Disney cruises. If I can use them for individual drinks or drink packages, that would be ideal.

Judith, You can pay with Disney Gift Cards on the ships. I believe you can only use credit cards in the gift shops and at Guest Services. The only way to use cash on the ships is to charge to your stateroom and then use the cash at Guest Services to pay on your stateroom account.

From personal experience, it is real simple to pay for everything with your KTTW card and periodically stop by guest services to pay on your account with whichever form of payment you wish to use.

From what I’ve been told, you can go at the end of the week to guest services and use your gift cards to pay off any balance you have. You might want to check with Disney Cruise Line just to be sure, though! 🙂

Stacie, You can purchase the drink of the day in the souvenir cup and use it to get refills for the remainder of the cruise. You will be given a new souvenir mug and charged just for the drink.

Melissa, when you purchase the wine package you are buying a certain number of bottles. If you choose you can consume them all in one night, or spread them out.

Ken, Tea bags are always available at the drink stations and hot water is available from the adjacent coffee machines. Tea bags are also available in the restaurants upon request and near the drink stations in Cabanas and Beach Blanket Buffet.

I’m going on a cruise on the Wonder at the end of the month and I’m wondering how easy it is to keep the “cooling box” cold enough for some beer. Do they have ice machines that you can use to fill it? Or does the room staff keep it cool with ice? And if I book a private shuttle from my hotel to the port in Miami will the driver stop at a liquor store so I can grab some beer? Any company recommendations? I don’t care about the cost of the shuttle, I’d rather pay more for someone who’d stop for me. Thanks!!

Ryan, I have never had an issue keeping my beer cold in the cooling boxes. Just make sure you check the thermostat when you first enter your stateroom. It is not always on the coldest setting.

Cruising on the dream in may. Is there a place to get liquor before getting on the ship? Walking distance after the shutte drops us off?

At this time, there are no places within walking distance to pick up liquor. There is an ABC Fine Wine and Spirits on Merritt Island, but this would require a taxi, or private shuttle service that would be willing to make take you on this errand.

For our cruise in October some of the cruisers used Port Canaveral Liquor shop. They deliver right to the terminal for you. I think they used both email and phone to order.

Yes, you can bring snacks on the ship. I brought a bookbag full of snacks, dried fruit, granola bars, raisins, etc… I like to take them to the island for the kids.

You can set up charging accounts for each if they have separate credit cards on file. I do not believe the gratuities can be split, but you can ask.

We have had member of 2 families in one room, the gratuities are per person so each person’s got charged to their account.

However, does anyone know if these beverages need to be able to be actually packed INSIDE of your carry on? Or if I plan to bring a case of beer or a case of water can I just physically carry it in my arms rather than trying to cram it into my bag with my other belongings? Allison, it does not need to be in official luggage. It is preferred that it is concealed in at least a shopping bag.

Scott, the DCL website states the carry -on bags are limited to 22x14x9. How strict are they with the size of the carry -on on bag?

The restriction is based on the port security’s x-ray machine.

Do you know if the x-ray maching will fit a larger bag then? I wasn’t sure if you had seen the machines before.

I know I can bring bottles of wine as a carry on, and bring the entire bottle to dinner and just pay a corking fee.

Does anyone know that if you bring your own snorkel gear and disembark at Castaway Cay are you able to snorkel? Do you have to buy the package in order to participate?

You can use your own equipment, but you will need to pick up a free inflatable snorkel vest. These vest can either be picked up at the snorkel rental shop or often times you can find them on the lifeguard stands or near the entrance to the snorkel lagoon.

Correct, there is no limit as to how much you can carry on to the ship. I think you get the idea for the other question…

Are you able to take bottled water aboard the ship with you?

Here’s a question. If I am on the Panama cruise (14 day eastbound) and I want a bottle of wine every night, do I just purchase two 7 night packages?

Mike, good question. I would say yes 2 seven bottle packages or a combination of the bottle packages that fits your needs, but I do not know for sure. DCL may offer a customized package for the longer sailings. I will ask around to see if someone can provide a better answer.

Can a box of can drinks be put in checked luggage at the port or do they still need to be in a carryon?

The request to have passengers to carry on liquids is meant to reduce the risk of a damaged container leaking over your luggage and potentially ruining nearby suitcases during their transfer from the terminal to your stateroom. If you have ever looked in the crew elevator areas on the ships the luggage is just piled up and thrown around. I’m sure there is a more legal reason or for your security reason, but here is the verbiage from DCL’s FAQ page…

Please note: Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to remove fragile items (including beverages) from checked luggage. In such cases, items will be stored and returned at the end of the voyage. Beverage containers are considered fragile and have previously caused damage in checked luggage. All fragile items must be transported inside carry-on luggage.

Thanks for posting this informative blog. I have a question about corkage fee. I am the only one drinking and I would like to bring my own wine. If I pay for the corkage fee and cannot finish the wine, do I have to pay corkage fee again the second time I bring the same bottle to dinner? What about Palo? Do I pay have to corkage fee again? Scott, do you know anything about the plastic hurricane cups?? Someone had told me you get a discount on drinks if you purchase it. I had never heard of this. Maybe the person was confusing the hurricane cup with the beer mug?? TIA!

Not necessarily a discount, but you can get it refilled. Since the cups hold more you technically get a little more than if you just order the drink without the glass.

No, duty free purchases are delivered to your stateroom on the last night of the cruise. As of September 30, 2015 you will no longer be permitted to bring liquor on board per the new guest alcohol policy .

The onboard duty free purchases are still held and delivered to your stateroom on the final night.

Are we allowed to purchase an alcoholic drink and walk around with it? We are taking kids to the children’s activities then want to grab a drink. Would like to explore the ship as we drink. Is this allowed? Thank you 🙂

Yes, if you purchase the drink on board you can walk around with it. There on some caveats such as no glass on the pool deck, but you can get a plastic glass. Additionally, some venues do not want their glassware taken out. For example Key’s has special glasses they want to keep in the venue. Still you can walk around with your beverage of choice purchased onboard.

No, the corking fee is only for bottles you bring to dinner that were NOT purchased onboard.

The Golden Slipper is a specialty cocktail from the Animator’s Palate Menu . It is a combination of Peach Schnapps, Créme de Cassis and Sparkling Wine.

It appears that the cruise line may have increased the prices on the wine packages. According to their gifts & amenities website, it appears that a 3 bottle classic is now $95 while the premium is $145. Maybe it is cheaper on the cruise?

It is included. Hot chocolate is also available at the drink stations in packets by the coffee and tea.

My wife and I plan on bringing 2 bottles of wine each to drink at dinner for our 5 night cruise departing this weekend. Do I put them in our carry on or do I carry them loose in a separate bag? You can put them in your carry on luggage. The rule is 2 bottles of wine or a 6-pack of beer per person. You can however buy more in a port of call.

It is ok to bring your refillable mugs from a Disney resort or waterpark to use for sodas? Also is there anywhere to get decent free coffee or should I just pay for a latte? Thanks!

Jen, Absolutely you can use your own refillable mugs. I always travel with a Tervis for this reason. Just make sure you fill your mug using one of the disposable cups at the drink station. I realize this is wasteful, but it is the rule (signs are posted) to prevent any contamination of the drink station. You will also find coffee, tea and hot chocolate at the drink station on the pool deck. Additionally, there are self service drink stations in Cabanas during operating hours.

After reading this and the DCL website I’m guessing the alcohol carry-on rules have changed? In earlier comments you said if we can carry it we can bring it (including liquor) but the website says only beer and wine in limited amounts. Did the policy change or do they just not really enforce it?

I have been on the Disney cruise a few times but it was years ago. Do the mini fridges work well in the cabins? If I read correctly they have no actual refrigeration? Are there mini bars available for the rooms?

Mark, I’ve not had a problem keeping liquids cold. It does take some time for the items to cool, but it does a decent enough job. There are no mini bars in the staterooms.

I am going in September and have wondered the same thing 🙂 I was going to perhaps try using shampoo bottles in my luggage since I imagine they don’t open them to make sure it’s really shampoo? perhaps put a liner inside them and put them in large ziplock bags the way I would if I was flying normally to avoid them exploding on my clothes. I’m disappointed that they changed the policy. Even if I manage to get booze on board, I will still likely spend more than I should on the specialty drinks.

Guest services told me just now that hard cider was specifically prohibited. Has anyone had any success bringing it on? I can’t drink beer or wine.

We just did the Fantasy in August and the only thing you could bring to your room was wine. Two bottles per adult. Anything else is checked and you pick it back up just before you leave the ship or its destroyed.

You can bring the club soda onboard with you in your carry on.

If my family is going on a cruise together and we are allowed 16 bottles all together. Can we bring that all onboard in a big box/cooler or do we need to each carry our own 2 individually?

To make it easier I’d suggest having each person carry 2 bottles, but if you find it easier just make sure you are all together and kindly explain it was just easier to them all together and this is our entire party.

I just went in August. I put four bottles in the same bag for my wife and I when we got on and at the ports. We got some great wine in Mexico at the Mega store and the wi e we bought in the Caymans was bad. Could t even drink it. Good stuff in the Port at Jamaica as well. Hi, we’re returning to the DCL in March and know that the alcohol policy has changed since we last cruised. All drink purchases are charged to your stateroom account. You can always to guest services and pay on your account using cash.

Scott is correct. Your boarding pass is used for all on-board purchases. Keep in mind that an automatic gratuity is added on to any alcoholic purchase.

The drink of the day is $4.75, the non-alcoholic drinks are $4.25. Both have a 15% auto gratuity.

My question is regarding the private open bar smoothie option. I’ve read that guests get a smoothie upon arrival to the hour long event but that the smoothies are all premade so after that first smoothie, they can’t go to the bar and order a second, third and so on. It’s anhour long event. Is the above info correct? If so, why can’t they order additional smoothies since it’s supposed to be unlimited? Thanks

The corkage fee is for bringing your own bottle of wine (that you carried on the ship) into the restaurants.

Can I bring my own plastic mug onboard?

Yes, but you will need to fill it using the disposable cups at the drink station. It is wasteful for sure, but if a CDC inspector sees anyone filling reusing or filling a reusable cup they can penalize the ship and it would be a negative on the inspection.

DCL does not currently track if you purchase the mug on each cruise. As a result, if you hand the bartender your mug they will fill it just as if you purchased it on the voyage.

It varies based on which beer you request, but it would be the 16oz cost as if you were ordering them a la carte at the bar.

On our recent Med cruise, we were allowed to bring wine and beer that we had purchased in ports of call back on to the ship to our staterooms. They only confiscated liquor and you had to reclaim it at Keys upon disembarkation.

Love your blog! We’re going on a DLC this winter and I wonder if my 18 year old can pack wine in her carryon? In other words do they verify you’re 21 if you bring alcohol on the ship?

We tend to pack our carry on and checked luggage family style where all bags have a mix. There have been times due to space, our daughter’s carry-on bag had a bottle of wine because it wouldn’t fit in my bag. If you are tying to extend your carry-on allowance, that isn’t going to work. However, I’ve never witnessed security checking guest’s IDs when checking carry-on beer & wine.

The drinking age when onboard a Disney® ship is 21 years of age, except, when sailing from European countries or where the drinking age is under 21 years of age.

Disney Cruise Line ® does not prohibit guests from bringing alcohol on board.

• All fragile items, including alcohol must be taken onboard by a carry-on bag/hand luggage. The measurement of these bags must not exceed 22" wide, 14" high and 9" deep. Beverage coolers are also not permitted onboard (cannot be checked or hand carried).
• Guests cannot check in cases of alcohol.
• Disney Cruise Line ® reserves the right to remove fragile items (including beverages) from the guest's luggage if they are placed here. The items will then be stored and returned to the guests when they leave the ship.

Nurseries cater for children as young as 12 weeks, infants less than 12 weeks old are not permitted to sail.

There is a charge for the nurseries to cater for children aged 12 weeks - 3 years, this is a per hour rate, this rate is slightly reduced for the second child. The nursery is open until midnight.

If guests know ahead of their cruise when they would like to book babysitting they can do this online in the Planning Centre.

There are also a number of activities and youth clubs for children aged 3+ included in the cost of your cruise where many fun days and evenings can be spent.

Dress code for dining onboard varies between venue and the night of your cruise, in general most meals are casual dress - no shorts, swimwear or tank tops.

Most cruises include a number of theme nights with additional attire requirements; see below for a breakdown of these.

• 3-night cruises There will be one casual night; this will require casual dress - no swimwear, tank tops or shorts. You will need full length trousers. One themed pirate/tropical night where formal wear is not needed along with one optional formal/dress-up night - this will require a dinner jacket for men and a dress or trouser suit for women.
• 4-night cruises These itineraries follow the same requirements as 3-night cruises, with the fourth night an additional causal night.
• 7-night cruises On the first night there will be a casual night as explained above. There will then be three additional casual nights, one themed pirate/tropical night and one formal/dress-up night - this will require dinner jacket for men and a dress or trouser suit for women.

When dining at Palo or Remy (adult-exclusive dining) smart dress is required. Smart trousers, shirts and jackets for men - ties are optional. For women a dress or trouser suit is required. No jeans, shorts, flip-flops, or trainers allowed.

When at Meridian on Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy smart dress is required for the indoor area. The outdoor patio however, is casual wear.

Disney Cruise Line ® uses an innovative and unique dining system to enable each guest to experience the various tastes on offer with Rotational Dining .

At the start of your cruise you are assigned personal waiting staff who will learn about you and your family and each evening will rotate with you to the three main restaurants onboard the ship. When you arrive onboard you will receive your schedule to explain where you'll be eating and when.

There is also an option for adult-exclusive dining (at an additional charge) where you can dine in style at Palo or Remy . These are available to book via the Planning Centre before you depart.

If you or any of your guests have any special needs be sure to speak to our Disney Experts for the correct advice and information regarding your cruise.

There are specially designed features and stateroom adjustments made to suit your needs. This includes both onboard the Disney Cruise and off board, for example, transfer tiers at a feature pool, active listening systems in the theatre onboard and sand wheelchairs for Disney's private island, Disney Castaway Cay .

Entertainment

Disney Cruise Line ® offers entertainment for everybody in your family. Each evening there will be a live show available for all Disney Cruise Line ® guests to see.

To accommodate for all guests there will be an early showing and a later show, depending on which rotational dining you are assigned will depend on which show you see. If you are assigned the first dining time you will see the later show, and if you are assigned the later dining you will see the first show.

There are also a number of character experiences and movies to be seen in the Disney theatres.

With family areas, adult-exclusive spaces and youth activities throughout the ship, there will be something for everyone .

As recognition of good service it is not obligatory but is customary to give gratuities when onboard a Disney Cruise. In order to help with this, Disney Cruise Line ® suggests the following:

15% gratuity is automatically added to bar, beverage, wine and deck service tabs.

You may wish to prepay your gratuities up to three days before embarking on your Disney Cruise. For your convenience, if you do not prepay, the suggested gratuities will be added to your onboard account based on the amounts above.

While on your cruise you can amend these amounts or if you would like to pay in cash just speak to a member of the guest services team.

The Disney Cruise you will be embarking on includes almost everything onboard. Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day of your cruise, along with access to the 24 hour beverage station plus snacks and ice cream from across the ship.

If you would like to dine at one of our adult-exclusive restaurants, there will be an extra charge for this. Bookings can be made via the online planning centre before you travel.

It may be confusing as to what money is needed onboard. While you are onboard the ship you will not need any cash as Disney operate a cash free system, for your convenience.

When you arrive at the port or onboard your signature is required to activate your onboard account, you may also give your credit card details at the same time (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Credit Card, Diners Club International, Japanese Credit Bureau or Disney's Visa Credit Card) for any additional charges. From this point you will have the charging privileges for anything you purchase onboard, for example, spa treatments, photography, laundry services etc. This also includes purchases from the retail stores and gratuities; all of which is charged to your room.

Before departing the cruise you will need to settle all charges by cash, travellers cheque, Disney Dollars or a credit card.

When you get to a port you may need cash or some money with you. In the Bahamas and Caribbean, US dollars and major credit cards are generally accepted everywhere.

For Mediterranean and European cruises you will need travellers cheques to exchange at the ports for local currency.

Smoking Policy

Disney does not allow smoking in guest staterooms and is also prohibited in all interior spaces throughout the ship.

There are designated areas provided throughout the ship permitting the smoking of cigarettes (including electric cigarettes).

What Not to Bring

There are a number of items that are prohibited when travelling on a Disney Cruise. These include; firearms and ammunition, any kind of knifes, swords, daggers, bullwhips or any other types of weapons are prohibited. Homemade, pre-cooked or perishable items are also prohibited.

Along with irons, bottle warmers, sporting equipment, balloons, candles, medical instruments, illegal drugs inclusive of medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana and coolers (except for those carrying medications, baby food or items related to dietary requirements).

Youth Clubs

Disney Cruise Line ® has created dedicated space on all of their ships for teens and children of all ages. These include activities specially created by Disney Experts to ensure everyone has a magical experience.

Imaginative play areas and Disney themed entertainment are among some of the onboard offerings.

Youth clubs are designed for children and teens, for example, Disney's Oceaneer Club ® is the perfect place for children to enjoy the planned activities by Disney Experts, dressing up as their favourite character and playing games.

While Edge ® provides pre-teens with their own environment to listen to music, watch television and take part in activities with their age group and Vibe ® is a teen-exclusive space with an outdoor space to allow letting them choose whether they want to catch some rays, play video games, or take part in the activities, for example, karaoke.

The ultimate guide to Disney Cruise Line ships and itineraries

After decades of success making families smile and laugh at its theme parks, Disney dipped its toes into the world of cruising in 1998. Disney didn't just copy another cruise line's model for success or slap its name on the side of an existing ship. It created its own brand of cruising.

Disney went so far into charting its own path as to get special approval from the U.S. Coast Guard for its ships' lifeboats to be yellow instead of regulation orange, to tie into the colors of Mickey himself — black, red, white and yellow.

Now, Disney Cruise Line has five ships sailing in those signature colors, along with three more on order. In a normal year, those five ships take tens of thousands of families on sailings to the Caribbean , Mexico, Alaska, Europe, Bermuda, Bahamas, through the Panama Canal and even to Australia and New Zealand.

Having sailed four of Disney Cruise Line's five ships, I can say the experience is indeed special — especially if you have kids. But Disney's not a one-trick cruise line that's only good for one age group. It offers kids clubs and activities to suit babies through teens and has several adults-only areas of the ship . Its newest ship, Disney Wish , provides more cool spaces for adults than any previous vessel.

Disney's attention to detail transfers to its voyages on the sea. But unlike at the Disney theme parks, which can be a bit complicated to navigate, long lines and complex strategies are rarely a part of the Disney cruise experience.

Disney Cruise Line fleet

While Disney may be a household name, Disney Cruise Line is actually a small line. It currently sails just five ships, compared to 27 at its family-friendly competitor Royal Caribbean .

Of the five, two are smaller ships, and three are larger.

The largest ships in Disney's fleet are Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, at 1,115 feet long and 14 decks high, and Disney Wish , at 1,119 feet and 15 decks high.

These three ships each have a passenger capacity of 4,000 people spread out across approximately 1,250 cabins. The overwhelming majority of cabins on these ships have an ocean view or private verandah, with only 10%-12% being windowless inside cabins. (On its oldest four ships, these interior rooms have a "magical porthole" that displays a live feed from outside to replicate a window.)

Disney Treasure , expected to join the fleet in 2024, will be in the same larger Triton class of ships as Disney Wish.

Disney Wish is currently a workhorse of short three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral , Florida, to the Bahamas, home to Disney's private island , Castaway Cay.

Disney Fantasy often sails weeklong cruises out of Florida. With the addition of Disney Wish to the fleet, Disney Dream now spends its summer across the Atlantic, offering European cruises from May to September, then spending much of the rest of the year based out of Fort Lauderdale.

The smaller two ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet are Disney Wonder and the line's first ship, Disney Magic .

These two ships are 984 feet long and 11 decks high, and each has the capacity for 2,713 passengers across 875 staterooms. On these two smaller ships, 70% of passenger cabins have ocean views or verandahs.

Disney Wonder is often on the move and currently splits its time among Alaska , the South Pacific, Hawaii, California, Mexico and beyond. Disney Magic spends part of its year based out of Galveston, Texas, or New Orleans and much of the rest based out of Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Disney Cruise Line destinations and itineraries

Disney Cruise Line has about 370 annual departures scheduled that range from two- to 15-night sailings. Many new-to-Disney itineraries have recently become available as the line is adding new ships for the first time in a decade.

Disney Cruise Line destinations include:

• New Zealand
• Pacific Coast
• South Pacific

Disney Wish has, by far, the highest number of annual sailings, with 105 three- and four-night cruises departing from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. These sailings all go to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay; some also stop in Nassau, Bahamas.

Some Disney cruises do what's called a "double dip" and make two stops at the private island, where you can step ashore without leaving the Disney bubble.

Pro tip: If you go to Castaway Cay, rent a bike for a little exercise and a self-guided tour of the island. Or, you can run the at-your-pace 5K that morning around the island.

Coming in summer 2024 , Disney will have a second exclusive beach destination in the Bahamas — Lighthouse Point.

This won't be an entire private island like Castaway Cay, but it will be an exclusive beachfront space designed for Disney Cruise Line with many similar offerings to Castaway. Disney Magic, Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy will call on this new destination for the first time in 2024.

Who sails Disney Cruise Line?

Let's start with the obvious: Families love Disney Cruise Line.

The ultimate sweet spot for taking a Disney cruise starts when a child is at least 3 years old and potty trained (the criteria that get them into the included kids clubs) and lasts until they outgrow their love of Disney characters. Remember, Disney now includes the "Star Wars" and Marvel brands and offers themed cruises featuring those characters, too.

A Disney cruise costs more than a similar cruise on a line like Royal Caribbean , so it's easiest to justify the expense when your kids love Disney the most.

So, yes, the stereotype that Disney Cruise Line is full of families is 100% correct.

You'll see many families with kids in those preschool, elementary and middle school years. But you'll also see families with little babies (the minimum age is 6 months on most sailings, 1 year on Panama Canal and transatlantic sailings), tweens, teens, college-age kids and even grandparents who have made a Disney cruise an enjoyable multigenerational travel tradition.

You'll also see cruisers who love Disney regardless of age and are proud to wear their Mickey ears while hearing the first seven notes of the "When You Wish Upon a Star" melody blown from the ship's massive horn.

Just like you don't need kids to have a great time at Disney World or Disneyland, you can happily cruise as adults without offspring on Disney Cruise Line. All the ships have active adults-only sun decks, pool and lounges. Disney Wish especially invested in its adult offerings with an infinity pool, along with more bars spread around the ship instead of being clustered into one main area.

Disney Cruise Line cabins and suites

At a basic level, Disney Cruise Line offers five main types of cabins across the fleet. In its simplified version, the types of cabins on a Disney cruise include:

• Windowless inside cabins
• Ocean-view cabins
• Verandah cabins (with private balconies)
• Verandah cabins with concierge service
• Suites with concierge service

These cabins start at 169 square feet for a standard inside cabin and go up to a two-story, 1,966-square-foot Tower Suite on Disney Wish .

Unless you are OK with the smallest space on the ship or have a budget for the largest, the sweet spot for price and comfort on Disney Cruise Line vessels is probably the cabins that are around 204 square feet and usually come with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa and upper-berth pull-down bed and a split bath.

This split bathroom situation places a sink and the shower/tub combo in one bathroom and the toilet and another sink in the other. Each has its own separate door, so someone could use the toilet/sink room while another takes a shower, all in private and at the same time.

You'll find this cabin layout within the Deluxe Inside Staterooms, Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms and Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah categories.

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms and Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah add about 40 more square feet to the equation. If you want the largest within those room categories, search for rooms that can hold five people on the Disney Cruise Line website.

Pro tip: You can ask your cabin host for cartoon bedding for the kid's bed if you think your child will be excited to come back from dinner to one of their Disney favorites.

You can connect many of the cabins on the ship , which is often a much more economical solution for a family looking for more sleeping space (and bathrooms) than upgrading to a multibedroom suite. Roughly speaking, a family of four will pay about 50% more for two cabins than they will for everyone to stay in one cabin of the same size.

If you are going all-out on a particular trip, or are simply working with a larger budget, Disney concierge suites are special.

The smallest available room with this service is the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah, which isn't all that different from the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah, other than the included concierge service. From there, you can go up to the one- or two-bedroom suites.

Be prepared for sticker shock, though, as these suites will almost certainly be near or over five figures on many sailings.

While pricey, Disney concierge service eliminates almost all of the potential pain points of a Disney cruise (not that there are many pain points to begin with).

Disney concierge service gets you access to the Disney Concierge Lounge, which has food offerings multiple times per day and a fully stocked fridge with sodas, juices and bottles of water.

In the evenings, you'll find included beer, wine and spirits in the lounge — which you can also take with you as you head out to dinner or to enjoy the view from the deck.

The Concierge Lounge also has its own private deck, and Disney characters have been known to make a private appearance there during the cruise. (Don't worry, you'll get a heads-up.)

You also have your own check-in area at the port and are among the first to board the ship, which can mean extra time to enjoy having the waterslides to yourself. At the end of the cruise, you can have a private elevator that takes you down to be some of the first off the ship — which should protect you from a long line to say goodbye.

There are other perks of the concierge level, too, such as early front-row seating at shows, included popcorn and the ability to submit your request for meal reservations at Palo or Remy, cabanas on Castaway Cay, spa treatments, character meet-and-greets or whatever else you wish before other guests. These can be made for you starting 120 days before your sailing, which is before all other guests except those with the highest elite status tier in the Castaway Club .

Passengers on their first Disney cruise don't get to make those reservations until 75 days out if they aren't in the concierge level. The reality is the hottest items are often booked up by then, especially on shorter cruises when there's less time to do everything.

Those in the concierge level in one-bedroom suites and higher can also order room service from the restaurants to their cabin, which means you can have a hot breakfast on your verandah if you wish instead of the regular continental options available to most guests.

If you are on the fence about concierge service, it's arguably most valuable when you are on a shorter cruise, have some specific popular must-have items on your reservation wish list or want someone else to take care of everything. You can also inquire about discounted upgrades at the port, assuming rooms are left unsold on your voyage.

Pro tip: Regardless of your cabin, bring magnetic Mickey or nautical-themed decor for the entrance, as most of the cabin doors are magnetic. Decorating is a fun tradition on a Disney cruise.

Disney Cruise Line restaurants and dining options

You will not go hungry on a Disney cruise. From room service to evening dinners, meals are (mostly) all included.

Rotational dining

On each Disney ship, three main dining rooms serve as dinner restaurants that participate in rotational dining. Each ship has its own lineup of themed rotational restaurants, but the concept remains the same on each.

Each night, your tablemates and servers will move from one restaurant to the next as a team. This way, the servers get to know that you always want to start with a glass of red wine, or your kids' food needs to come ASAP so you can take them to the kids club as soon as they finish, or (in my case) your daughter wants a side of barbecue sauce with ... everything.

You must choose between an early and a late dinner time, with your showtime opposite your dining time. Some restaurants, such as Animator's Palate, are found on multiple ships, while others are unique to one ship, such as Tiana's Place on Disney Wonder and all of the rotational restaurants found on Disney Wish .

At these restaurants, you can order whatever you want on the menu at no extra charge, with a few exceptions (for example, alcohol and specialty drinks cost extra).

While many guests dress up a bit for dinner (compared to their afternoon pool deck attire), most stay relatively casual for the rotational dining restaurants. Disney does not impose a specific dress-up requirement.

Disney cruise ships offer many other dining options beyond the three included themed restaurants — most included, some not.

Room service

Room service is mostly free (other than sodas or alcohol), though the menu is limited if you aren't staying in a concierge-level cabin. Still, it's free room service, so I'm not one to complain.

Pro tip: Fill the breakfast card out the night before and hang it on your stateroom to get breakfast exactly when you want it the next morning.

And you haven't lived until your kids learn how to call and order free Mickey ice cream bars to the cabin ... every night (just be sure and add a tip).

Buffet and grab-and-go

Your Disney cruise will also include a buffet known as Cabanas on the original four ships and Marceline Market on Disney Wish. The buffet is usually open for breakfast and lunch, though not in the evening hours.

In addition to the buffet, a few grab-and-go quick-service restaurants on the pool deck serve salads, chili, pizza, barbecue and more, depending on which ship you're sailing.

Don't miss these options, as some are quite good. They are typically open from late morning until later into the evening.

Room service, the buffet and the on-deck food counter dining options don't cost extra and are available to you in addition to or instead of your rotational dining.

You'll also find included ice cream on one of the upper decks. A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast.

Extra-cost, adults-only restaurants

At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish).

Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks). This is the type of place where men need jackets and women are expected to wear dresses, pantsuits or a skirt and blouse. Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you're dressing up for these meals.

Palo is also fancy, though a notch less fancy than Remy. You'll see jackets and dresses in Palo, but you can also get by with nice jeans if you want. This adults-only restaurant serves Northern Italian fare and starts at about $45 per person for a multicourse brunch or dinner, though you can also order a la carte for dinner, which could cost more or less, depending on your order.

I can say with 100% certainty that if you enjoy a nice meal, this is worth the extra $45 once during your cruise . From the breadbasket to the dessert, it's all amazing. You'll gain 5 pounds, but you won't regret a bite.

These reservations are hard to get, especially for brunch, so you'll want to make them the second you are eligible and keep checking back for cancellations if you miss out the first time.

Coffee shops and snack shops

On a Disney cruise, the snacks and pastries you'll see in the coffee shop or kiosk are all included, but the specialty coffee will cost extra. Drink prices are roughly similar to Starbucks, if not a notch lower. Be sure and ask for the Cafe Fanatic card if you're a regular, as your sixth drink will be free.

In addition to the included soft-serve ice cream and Mickey bars available via room service, your ship may have some shops with extra-fee ice cream. This can confuse kids, so I want to warn you beforehand. On Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish, you'll find an ice cream shop stuffed with candies, gelato and ice cream — all for an extra charge.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy also have a juice bar that costs extra.

The exact bars will vary by vessel, but you can expect spots like a wine and Champagne bar, a pub, a laid-back lounge and a bar with live entertainment.

These bars are a lot of fun and are not to be missed if you like live music or a nice drink at the end of the day. Keep an eye out in your app for when and where the happy hours are on board if you want to save a few dollars on your drinks. Some bars also offer a sommelier bin where you get a nice glass of wine at a discounted price — as long as you put the bartender in charge of choosing your drink.

Some of the drink-tasting classes that you book in advance can be a good value if you're a fan of the drink on offer and are interested in learning a little bit while you sip. You'll want to book these before sailing, as many do sell out.

Food on Castaway Cay

If your cruise takes you to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, you're in luck, as there's plenty of included food to eat there, too.

Just like on board, some of the food on Castaway is included, while alcohol and specialty drinks are not. The Cookie's and Cookie's Too lunch shacks on the island are both included, so load up on hot dogs, barbecue, hamburgers, fries and all the fixings. Vegetarian options are available.

While the food options here are somewhat basic, they still make for a fun and free meal.

However, if you don't like what is on offer on the island, you can always hop back on your ship for lunch and then continue your afternoon on the island after you eat.

Entertainment and activities on a Disney cruise

A valid reason to want to sail with Disney is the onboard fun that awaits — especially for those who love Disney characters and stories.

Theaters and shows

Each Disney cruise ship features two theaters. In the massive Walt Disney Theatre, you'll enjoy Broadway-caliber evening shows such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Frozen," "Tangled," "Disney Dreams," "The Golden Mickeys" and more. If you want a good seat, arrive about 30 minutes early since seating is first come, first served.

The Buena Vista Theatre screens first-run Disney films. These will be the same films still showing in theaters on land. If you happen to be at sea when a new Disney movie premieres on land, you'll also get that same first look at sea.

Pirate Night is a staple on many Disney cruises in the Caribbean. On that themed night, expect everyone to be dressed in their pirate-y best for the evening, so pack accordingly. Your dinner will also have a pirate theme, followed by a fun show up on deck, complete with fireworks.

Pro tip: If you plan to stay up late for Pirate Night, try to work in a nap that afternoon so you don't miss out on the nighttime fun.

Game shows, karaoke, bingo and more

The extensive lineup of interactive game shows, trivia, karaoke, dance parties, bingo and more listed in the Disney cruise app are worth checking out. Some of these are adults-only, while others are fun for the whole family. Most are included in the price of the cruise, though bingo does cost extra — and you could win real money.

Other interior attractions and activities

Meeting Disney characters is a fun part of a Disney cruise.

You can make reservations to meet the popular princesses, but most characters are easy to walk up to and meet via a short line. Or, even better, you often see them roaming about the ship at unexpected times.

You can work off some of those treats and drinks at the onboard fitness center on each ship.

The Senses Spa & Salon is a full-service spa with everything from massages to pedicures and hair care. Promotions are available if you book more than one treatment. If you have a Disney Visa card , you can also save 20% on select onboard services.

Pro tip: The showers in this part of the ship are full-size, in case you are getting a bit claustrophobic in the shower in your cabin.

If you like getting away to relax, look at purchasing access to the Rainforest Room for heated stone loungers, aromatherapy showers and even hot tubs on the larger ships. You can buy a one-day or full-cruise pass to this area of the spa, but get a tour first as the layout and inclusions in this space vary dramatically from ship to ship.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Little cruisers can be transformed into a princess or pirate at sea at the onboard Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, which does themed kid makeovers and sells costumes as part of the package. You'll need an appointment; expect to pay $100 to $200 for most packages.

This is a fun thing to do before meeting a princess, before a more formal night or anytime you want to see a huge smile on your kid's face. If you have a princess dress or outfit from home you want to use or reuse, you can purchase a cheaper package at Bibbidi Bobbidi.

Decktop attractions

Waterslides.

All of Disney Cruise Line's ships have some kind of waterslide on board.

The AquaDuck waterslide on Dream and Fantasy takes riders in single or double tubes 765 feet from Deck 12 up and down, through the forward funnel and on a four-deck drop. It's pretty epic. AquaMouse on Disney Wish is also an inner tube-based ride and is not to be missed.

These lines can get long, so I recommend riding first thing when you board if the port is warm enough. Nighttime rides usually have short waits, too.

Disney Magic has the most thrilling waterslide in the fleet, called AquaDunk, and Disney Wonder has its own waterslide in the AquaLab splash area.

Each Disney ship has multiple pools, though if you've never been on a cruise, you may be initially shocked at how small they are — and how busy they can get.

As with the waterslides, we recommend enjoying these first thing when you board if you want to try them without crowds. Otherwise, you won't find so many people in the pools on port days, early in the morning and right before dinner. There are thousands of people on the ship and only a few small pools, so plan accordingly.

Each ship has a pool and hot tub area for adults 18 and up. It can also get busy, but typically less busy than the family area. Select ships also offer an in-pool bar area for adults.

The adult sun deck is a nice place to grab a chair and relax, even if you have no intention of getting in the water.

Splash pads

Your little one has to be potty trained to use the onboard pools. The option for those still in swim diapers is some splash areas, such as Nemo's Reef and Dory's Reef.

Sports deck

If you want to be more active, head to your ship's sports deck to play basketball, foosball, miniature golf and more. You may even have some sports simulator options beyond your traditional in-person fun.

Children's programs

As a parent, my favorite part of a Disney cruise might be the included kids programs that children actually want to attend. If the kids are happy for a few hours, the parents can actually relax, too.

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for children ages 3–12

All five Disney ships have amazing spaces for kids in the 3-to-12-year-old range in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab.

Here you'll find video games, an indoor slide, fun programs and games with the staff, arts and crafts, surprise character visits and more. Your kids need to be potty trained to stay in this club, so use that as motivation for a kid approaching 3 years old before your next cruise.

Your kids don't need an appointment to pop in here; they can come anytime from open to close — and the club stays open pretty late.

Parents can stay with kids and play during open hours on the first day and select times on other dates, but most of the time, the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are kids-only. Your kids will check in and out by scanning a special MagicBand that also tracks where they are within the kids clubs.

Disney Wish has the added perk in the kids club of a slide that takes the kids straight from the main atrium and into the fun.

Know that once your child turns 8, you have the option of giving them self-checkout privileges. While kids up to 12 are welcome in the main Oceaneer Club, they may start moving up to the tween club by the time they are 10 years old.

Edge tween club for children ages 11–14

When your kid outgrows the fun in the main kids club, don't worry. Edge is waiting just upstairs.

Technically, Edge is for kids ages 11-14, but you can get your 10-year-old in with permission — and once they figure that out, it's probably all over for the "little kid club."

Edge is a much smaller space, but tweens have tons of fun playing video games, having dance parties, doing crafts, playing trivia games and more with their newfound cruise friends.

This club does not utilize parent sign-in and -out, so you need to trust your kid if they are coming to Edge. If your 10-to-12-year-old child visits Edge, they can also play at the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club, so they have options.

Vibe teen club for children ages 14–17

Get ready to be jealous of this one. On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, the teen club has its own set of small pools at the front of the ship.

Inside all versions of the teen club, Vibe, you'll find a tech-friendly world with loungers, dance parties, smoothies and other teen-approved fun. Some of the coolest inside space on Disney cruise ships is dedicated to teens ages 14-17, but you can request for your child to attend this club starting at 13 years old.

'It's a small world' nursery for children 6 months to 3 years old

While the three previously mentioned kids clubs are free and do not require reservations, the nursery operates differently. You will need to make reservations, and the fee is $4.50 per half-hour for the first child and $4 per half-hour for each additional child.

The specific documents you will need will vary by cruise destination. Having a passport is always a good idea, but it's not technically required on all Disney cruises. For example, round-trip cruises originating in Port Canaveral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, San Diego, New Orleans, New York and San Juan, Puerto Rico, often do not require a passport.

Passports, when required, must be valid for at least six months. For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport. Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

Disney Cruise Line adds a service gratuity of $14.50 per person per day to final bills. If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can lower this amount. Of course, you can visit guest services and adjust it upward, too.

To give an idea of the cost, a four-person family on a four-night cruise would pay $232 in recommended tips. The amount is split among your team of dining room servers who quickly learned your kids' preferences for dinner and your cabin hosts who made your room look like magic while you were out enjoying yourself.

An 18% gratuity is added to onboard spa, bar, beverage, wine and deck service tabs. You can always add an additional gratuity for any of your services or servers.

While room service is free, it's customary to add a few dollars of tip when you sign the "bill."

While some gratuity is included at Palo and Remy, you'll likely want to add an additional tip if you enjoyed the service. If you stay in a concierge-level room or suite, it is customary to tip the Concierge Lounge hosts at the end of your cruise a recommended amount of $8 per night per guest.

Disney Cruise Line's Wi-Fi, Connect@Sea, is in the process of being upgraded, so speed, bandwidth and cost vary by ship.

If you are on a ship that charges by day instead of by the amount of data used, expect the prices to vary from $12-$36 per day, depending on the speed you select. There are often discounts for buying Wi-Fi access for the length of the cruise.

If you are on a ship that still charges by the amount of data used, we recommend not doing that and connecting either when you are in port or via a plan from your cellphone provider.

Carry-on drinks policy

Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 milliliters) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage. You can keep drinks chilled in the small fridge in your cabin.

Guests wishing to consume wine or Champagne that they have brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corkage fee of $26 per bottle.

Smoking policy

Smoking is permitted only in designated deck areas. It's forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 cleaning fee.

For an additional fee, Disney ships offer full-service laundry and dry cleaning services that will pick up and deliver clean clothes to your cabin.

Ships also provide 24-hour, self-service guest laundry facilities equipped with washers and dryers, along with detergent and complimentary ironing equipment. You pay for the facilities by using your Key to the World card. These services can get busy during sea days on longer cruises, so plan accordingly.

Electrical outlets

All cabins are equipped with multiple 110-volt outlets, which are standard in the U.S. and Canada. Cabins on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are equipped with a combination of 110- and 220-volt (European) outlets.

Small electrical appliances such as electric shavers, curling irons and flat irons with standard North American plugs will function on board; 110-volt items should not exceed 1,500 watts, and 220-volt items should not exceed 2,000 watts. A hair dryer is provided in every cabin for your convenience, but you may bring your own as long as it meets the guidelines above.

The currency on Disney Cruise Line ships, regardless of location, is the U.S. dollar.

When you are on the ship, you will not need cash or a credit card — all incidentals, purchases and services will be charged to your cabin folio. Your Key to the World card (or your DisneyBand+ on Disney Wish ) serves as your onboard payment method. The only exception is if you want to tip a crew member in cash.

In port, you may wish to carry cash or a credit card to buy snacks and souvenirs or to tip your tour guide.

Drinking age

For most Disney sailings, the drinking age on board is 21.

However, on round-trip cruises departing European countries with a lower drinking age, passengers 18-20 years of age can drink alcohol on board with signed parental consent. For round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, guests 18 years of age and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent.

During the day, people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, that means looking like you're going to the beach. T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are fine.

During the evenings, dining attire in the three main dining restaurants is "cruise casual," meaning no swimwear or tank tops, but you don't have to put on a party dress. That said, many guests do dress up a bit in the evening, but it's not required unless you are dining in Palo, Remy or Enchante.

Cruises that are seven nights or longer schedule one "formal night" — though even then, it's only encouraged, not required. On that night, you will see suits, sports coats, cocktail dresses and similar from some guests.

Disney Cruise Line loyalty program

Disney Cruise Line has a simple loyalty program, the Castaway Club , with four "elite status" levels that you earn based on how many cruises you've taken with Disney. A three-night and 10-night cruise both count as one sailing for these purposes.

• Silver: One completed cruise
• Gold: Five completed cruises
• Platinum: 10 completed cruises
• Pearl: 25 completed cruises

This isn't the kind of loyalty program where you earn free cruises the way you earn free flights with airline miles. Instead, as you go up in status, you earn perks and earlier access to booking cruises and activities — which is key for getting those hard-to-snag adult dining or Castaway Cay cabana reservations

Silver members

• Book new cruise itineraries one day before the general public and book onboard activities 90 days before sailing.
• Get a "welcome back aboard" gift (such as a bag), have access to a Castaway Club members-only line when boarding and access to a Castaway Club direct phone number.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 33 days before the general public.

Gold members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings two days before the general public and can book onboard activities 105 days before sailing.
• On eight-night and longer voyages, Gold Castaway Club members are also invited to a private reception with special entertainment. There are also select merchandise discounts available to Gold members and higher.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 35 days before the general public.

Platinum members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings three days before the general public and can book onboard activities 120 days before sailing.
• Priority check-in at the cruise terminal.
• Complimentary evening dinner at Palo or Palo Steakhouse for themselves and everyone in the cabin age 18 and older.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 38 days before the general public.

Pearl members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings four days before the general public and can book onboard activities 123 days before sailing.
• Exclusive cruise terminal check-in (where available)
• Unlimited Digital Photo Package.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 40 days before the general public.

How much does a Disney cruise cost?

Magic ain't cheap, and Disney cruises are expensive. They aren't the priciest voyages out there, but they will cost more than cruises with family-friendly competitors such as Royal Caribbean by a noticeable margin.

For a family of four, the cheapest Disney cruise currently available (not counting the two-night cruises in Australia and New Zealand) is about $2,500. An ocean view will add about $90 and a verandah will add about $500.

On these shortest cruises, concierge-level cabins and access start at a little over $5,000 for a family of four.

Those sorts of prices will only be available during the offseason, such as in mid-to-late January and early February or for repositioning cruises as the ship moves from, say, Puerto Rico to Florida. That same cruise during spring break can cost double or more, so the more date flexibility you have, the better.

A seven-night cruise in the Caribbean will likely start around $5,000 for a family of four. Expect Alaska and Europe cruises to start at $5,000 to $6,000 for inside cabins for a week, and prices go up for longer sailings and upgraded cabins.

You can save money on your next Disney cruise by putting a $250 deposit down while you are at sea on a previous Disney cruise. It's a popular way to get 10% off your next cruise.

Another way to save on a Disney cruise is to look at a one-way repositioning sailing , as those often price lower than other similar cruises. For example, the cruise line may need to end a cruise in a particular port to reposition the ship to do some sailings from there. You'll have to get yourself back home from that port, but you may save on the cruise in the process.

How to book

You can book your Disney cruise directly with Disney Cruise Line either over the phone or online, but I'd argue you shouldn't.

Cruises are easy to enjoy but can be complicated to plan if you are new to this type of travel. This is an industry where a travel agent is still a good call. You want someone who can help you pick the right cabin type and location for your group and keep track of when you can snag those onboard activities you really want.

Another reason to consider going through a travel agent is to get onboard credit. Some travel agents will offer onboard credit based on the amount you spend on your Disney cruise. This is credit you can use toward drinks, spa treatments, excursions or anything else you can charge to your room.

Can You Drink At 18 On Royal Caribbean?

While in US waters, you have to be 21 or over to be able to drink alcohol on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.  As well as applying to all ships originating from North America, it also applies to those originating from Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

In specific International waters, you can drink alcohol from the age of 18 years and up from sailings originating in:

Can You Drink On Norwegian Cruise Line at 18?

In US waters, the minimum drinking age for alcohol is 21.  

However, guests from 18 can purchase and consume alcohol once the ship is at least 3 miles outside of US territorial waters.  Parental consent will be required, and a form will need to be signed.  This will give permission for the 18 to 20-year-olds to drink beer and wine only, no hard liquor.

Passengers disembarking from and sailing in US waters are not allowed to buy or consume alcohol until the age of 21. 

However, for some cruises around the rest of the words 18 year old can drink alcohol on a Princess cruise, with the exception being Japan, where the age is 20.

Although if guests embark from a country outside the US where the drinking age is lower than 21, they will be allowed to drink onboard if parents or legal guardians sign a waiver giving their consent.

Can 18 Year Olds Drink on Cruises in Mexico?

If you embark from a US port, you would have to adhere to the minimum drinking age of 21 while on a cruise ship in Mexican waters.

However, if you leave the cruise ship and visit a port in Mexico where the legal drinking age is 18 you can purchase alcohol while off the ship.

Crystal Cruises Beer and Wine Only

Outside of Us territorial waters, 18 to 20-year-olds can buy and consume beer and wine only   They will not be able to drink hard liquor until they are 21.

Can You Drink Alcohol if you Turn 18 on a Cruise?

If you have an 18th birthday while on a cruise and 18-year-olds are allowed to drink alcohol, you would also be able to buy and consume alcoholic beverages while onboard.  In some instances, depending on your cruise line, your age is verified upon boarding.  Therefore you may need to visit Guest Services with evidence of ID to prove your new age so they can update your details so you can get served.

Can You Drink on a Caribbean Cruise at 18?

If you cruise ship sales from a North American port, the minimum drinking age is 21.  If your cruise ship embarks from a port outside the US, the drinking age depends on the cruise line and, in some cases, whether parental consent is given to drink at 18.

Can 18-year-Olds Visit Bars and Nightclubs on a Cruise?

Most cruise lines will allow 18-year-olds to hang out in bars and nightclubs with friends and family or even by themselves.  

They will, however, have to abide by the cruise lines drinking age rules. This will often mean that although they can hang out at bars, they can’t drink alcohol until they are 21

If 18-year-olds are deemed underage, they should not be by drinking in their cabins.   However, it is not unheard of for teens to smuggle or sneak alcohol to their cabins.  This is likely to go unnoticed unless the teens in question overindulge and get caught outside the cabin inebriated.

Outside of US waters, some cruise lines allow parents or legal guardians to sign a waiver giving consent for their 18 to 20-year-old to drink alcohol on board.

I am currently in Europe where they have a much lower drinking age than in the USA, 13 in fact. I find this interesting considering our drinking age used to be 18, and is now 21. I’ve always found this absurd that you can vote or serve the country (and die for it) at 18 but cannot legally have a beer. What are your thoughts? I wonder what would happen if we lowered the drinking age in America.

I’ve always been fine with 18 as a legal drinking age, but I don’t know if it will ever go back to that.  

The human brain continues development well into someones 20's. The longer they can refrain from drinking the better. Alcohol can have detrimental effects on the development of the human brain.

18 in my province and I’m fine with that, Very dumb that you can go to war or buy a gun but not buy a beer in the USA.  

My son turned 21 this week and made sure to stop by Five Points Bottle shop to get his free t-shirt that they only give on your birthday. He didn’t buy any alcohol though. The shirt is often the required wardrobe for frat and sorority parties.

My mothers from France and we have visited family there pretty much yearly for my whole life, so I’m very familiar with the culture there. They don’t seem to having “drinking to get drunk” there like we do here. They look at alcohol in an entirely different way. In fact it’s an old wives take in France that a glass of wine daily during pregnancy is good for the baby! Friends of family there own a vinyard and they were laughingly telling me about an American school group of teens that visited and toured the vinyard and tasted different wines while there and the leaders of the group were making them spit out the wine after swirling it in there mouths to taste it. They thought it was the funniest thing.  

In Canada it ranges from 18 to 19. My wife is Greek and there they have drinks at dinner. Its to enhance the meal,,not to get drunk. Thats the way it should be.

Disney Cruise Lines Drink Packages [Packages & Pricing 2023]

Disney Cruise Line is known for offering an unforgettable and magical vacation experience for families and individuals alike. One of the highlights of the Disney cruise experience is the variety of food and drinks available on board.

Most of the other major cruise lines have drink packages front and center, but searching the Disney Cruise Line’s website, it’s a hard go to find information about drink packages.

That may be because Disney is a family-oriented cruise where the kiddos’ interests are paramount.

And while they don’t push their alcoholic drinks, they do have plenty of them, and here is what we did find out about drink packages on DCL:

Beverages Included And Not Included In A Cruise On DCL

Beverages included at no extra charge:.

• Soft drinks, coffee and tea served during meals.
• Non-alcoholic drinks from the Beverage Station.
• Soft drinks served at Vibe teens-only lounge.

Beverages that incur an additional charge:

• Alcoholic beverages, smoothies, specialty coffees and bottled water served during meals.
• Beer, wine, cocktails, bottled water and non-alcoholic beverages served in lounge areas.

There are no “unlimited alcohol” or “all you can drink” packages onboard Disney Cruise ships. They do have what they consider “packages” that you can purchase both in advance and onboard.

Wine Packages

The wine onboard Disney comes in many varieties, and there are classic, or standard, wines and premium wines.

Wine options will vary by departure port and by the ship’s itinerary.

You can purchase Classic wine or Premium Wine packages in one, three, four, five or seven bottle packages.

As of this writing, Feb 2023, the prices ranged from a low of $38 for one bottle of Classic wine to $316 for a seven-bottle package of Premium wine.

Beer Packages

Disney has a variety of beer that includes:

• Corona Blue Moon
• Miller Lite
• Coors Light
• Bud Light Lime

The beer comes in a six-pack, and all types of beer brands are at this writing, $33.75.

Beer Mug Package

DCL has a branded beer mug that can be purchased onboard. This decorative mug holds 21 ounces and each time you fill it at any onboard bar, you get a 21-ounce refill of beer at the cost of a 16-ounce size.

Lugging this large mug would get tiring quickly, so if you want, you can just use the beer mug token. The token gets you the same benefits of the mug without having to tote it wherever you go.

Although brands of beers vary depending on the port of call , these beers that you can get in your decorative beer mug may be:

• Stella Artois
• Angry Orchard
• Michelob Ultra
• Samuel Adams
• Kona Longboard
• Newcastle Brown Ale

Hard Seltzer

Truly Pineapple and Truly Wild Berry are the two hard seltzer flavors that can be purchased in a six-pack at a cost of $25, at the time of this writing, in the DCL beverage package.

Bottled Water

Dasani bottle water packages usually come in 16-ounce aluminum bottles. They will be delivered to your stateroom before your arrival.

You can order water in packages of six, twelve or twenty-four bottles.

Room service will also offer bottled water options when you purchase through them. They may offer a “buy five and get one free” type of offer. If you are interested, make sure to check the room service menu.

OnBoard Tasting Seminars

If tasting various alcoholic beverages appeals to you, DCL gives you that option with a slew of tasting seminars.

Exclusively for adults, these seminars range from Amari, Beer, Bourbon, Champagne, Cognac, Martini and a Chocolate & Liquor Tasting seminar.

There is also a Mixology Class, Mojito & Caipirinha, Rum, Tequila & Margarita Tasting, and last but not least, Whiskey.

What age must a Guest be to drink alcoholic beverages on a Disney Cruise ship?

The drinking age on board is 21, and a valid photo I.D. is required. However, during round-trip cruises departing from any European country that has a lower drinking age, parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.

In addition, for round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, Guests 18 years of age and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent. For repositioning cruises between Hawai’i and Australia, parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.

Are Guests allowed to bring alcoholic beverages on board the ship?

Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage.

For round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, Guests 18 years of age and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage.

Guests wishing to consume wine or champagne that they have brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corking fee of $26.00 per bottle.

DCL Policy For Bringing Alcohol Onboard

Alcohol packed in checked luggage will be removed and not returned and no compensation will be offered.

All alcohol brought on board must be in an original unopened container. Partially used bottles and those in which the seal is broken are prohibited.

Any wine or champagne in excess of 2 bottles or beer in excess of 6 beers is prohibited and must be discarded prior to entry and no compensation is offered.

Liquors or spirits or excess wine and beer purchased in ports of call will be stored until the end of the cruise.

Guests must retrieve stored alcohol at the end of the cruise. Items not retrieved will be discarded and no compensation will be offered.
