Safety and security is important to us. With Currency Pass, none of your personal information is stored on the card, unlike a credit card which is connected to your financial institution. Your transactions are managed by Mastercard but funds are underwritten by EML Payment Solutions Limited ('EML') ABN 30 131 436 532 , AFSL 404131. In the unlikely event that you misplace your card, you can suspend the card by giving us a call on +61 (2) 8974 0856. We can make arrangements to transfer you money via Western Union. Additionally, as the card isn't linked to your financial institution, you can rest assure that if someone has it, they can't access your accounts back home.

Easy - login to my.travelmoneyoz.com and from here, click on Account Details in the menu bar. From here, you're able to edit your email address, phone number and address. For help with changing anything us, give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

No, Currency Pass works just like your every day debit card. You can simply tap and go for every day purchases or withdraw funds from an ATM. The only time you really need to be online is if you want to manage your funds via our easy to use app or website.

Currency Pass works just like your every day debit cards. You can use it for tap and go purchases, paywave and online shopping. But we've made it just a little bit better by being able to load up to 10 different currencies so that when you're travelling you can spend the local currency and always know how much it's costing you.

Travel Money Oz Currency Pass is a debit card. You can only spend the funds that are loaded onto the card. The best part is, you won't get caught out with hefty credit card fees and interest. You're only spending your money.

We're pretty confident we have most destinations covered however Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions are affected by sanctions, which means that your Currency Card will be declined if you try to use it in these countries. Additionally, all Mastercards will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs. The list of countries in which the Currency Card does not work will be updated from time to time, so please check back here before travelling.

  • How do I get a Currency Pass?
  • How much will a card cost me to purchase?
  • Can you buy a Currency Pass if you're under 18?
  • Can I get a second card?
  • What do I do if I can't buy a Currency Pass online?

Getting a Currency Pass is easy. You can order a card online via our website (this will take up to 14 business days to receive in the mail) or simply visit one of our stores to take one away immediately.

Our Currency Pass is free to buy - just make sure it's loaded with minimum $20 to get started. We don't charge any fees for issuing and loading your card in store either. (Although, merchant fees will apply if you are using a credit card to load funds). More info on fees and limits can be found here.

Yes, you can get a Currency Card if you are under 18. You will however, need to complete your identity verification in person at your nearest Travel Money Oz store. Only Australian Passport or Drivers License will be accepted as valid ID.

Unfortunately we can only give 1 x card per Currency Pass account.

To buy a Currency Pass online, you must verify your identity against several government sources (100point ID check). If your identification doesn't meet the online requirements, you still may be able to buy a Currency Pass in store if you're an Australian resident. Simply bring in a valid photographic Australian Passport, or Australian state driving license and we can set you up on the spot.

TOP TIPS WHEN USING YOUR CARD

  • How do I use my Currency Pass overseas?
  • What do I do if an overseas vendor asks if I want to pay in AUD?

Always select credit when making a transaction (including at ATMs!) and if given the option, pay in the local currency of the destination vs AUD, providing it's loaded on your card. This avoids you paying extra conversion fees (this is often called Dynamic Currency Conversion).

We recommend always paying in the local currency if it’s loaded on your Currency Pass (local currency of the destination). In some situations, ATMs and retailers may offer ‘Dynamic Currency Conversion’ (payment in your home currency). This however, simply allows them to dictate their own exchange rate and may result in you being charged fees associated with a foreign transaction. Spending in the local currencies means you always know what you're paying and have greater control over your funds.

REGISTERING

  • How do I register online?
  • What do I do if I'm unable to register my account?

Follow these steps...

  • How do I activate my card?

Just like your regular bank cards, for security reasons Currency Cards need to be activated once you've received it. To do this, follow the below prompts...

Call Mastercrd on 1800 098 231 or on +61 (2) 8974 0856 from outside of Australia

Press 1 to hear the card services line in English

Press 4 for Card activation or PIN Assistance

Follow the prompts and enter your card details

Your card is now active, continue to listen and follow the call options to hear your new PIN number

LOGIN/PASSWORD

  • How do I log in to the portal?
  • Who do I contact if I'm locked out of my Currency Pass account?

Easy - go to the login page and enter in your email and password. If this isn't proving to be easy, and you're having a bit of trouble, give us a call on 136195 (or +61 (2) 8974 0856 if you're overseas).

No stress - head to my.travelmoneyoz.com and select 'I have forgotten my password' to reset your account. If you're still having trouble, give us a call on 13 61 95, or if calling overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856

  • How do I reveal my PIN?
  • How do I change my PIN?

You've got 2 x options..

1. By phone - Give us a call on 136 195, or if calling from overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856. From here, press 11 to hear the card services line in English and then press 2 for Card Activation or PIN Assistance. Follow the prompts and enter you card details to hear your current card balance.

2. Reveal via desktop (note this won't work as well on mobile!) - Log into the my.travelmoneyoz.com portal. Click on the Currency Card link at the top of the screen. Reveal PIN is the 5th option.

LOADING & ACCESSING MONEY

  • How can I load my card?
  • What currencies can I load?
  • What is this SMS I need to get to reload?
  • I'm get an error message when I try to reload, what should I do?
  • How do I change my card's default currency?
  • What is the maximum/minimum amount I can load on my card?
  • How long does it take for funds to be loaded onto my card?
  • What happens if I run out of funds in one currency, but have other currencies available?
  • How do I transfer between currencies?
  • How much will it cost for me to reload my card?

You have a few options. You can load money onto your card using the Travel Money Oz app, or by logging into your account on our website - from here, you can load via Debit or Credit Card (including using Google or Apple Pay), or via Bank Transfer (using Poli for secure and instant bank transfers), or you can load your Currency Pass in any of our stores nationwide. You can also reload your card with BPAY at any time from your online banking account (2-3 days for BPAY transfers to appear).

Up to 10! They include... USD, EUR, GBP, NZD, CAD, HKD, JPY, SGD, THB and AUD.

If you're heading somewhere and their currency isn't one of the above, no stress - load in AUD (or any of the others) and withdraw the local currency from an ATM. Or swipe/tap as normal and it will convert as you go with each transaction.

We use extra authentication as a security measure when you reload funds. The SMS is sent from your bank, not us. If you can't receive the SMS, you'll need to contact your bank to update your details. As an alternative, try reloading using BPAY, however, if we're a new payee, it's possible your bank still may need to send a SMS.

Received an error during your reload? This means your card has not been loaded (even if you see the funds pending in your bank balance). Please contact us via [email protected] before you re-attempt your transaction.

To start, make sure you're logged into the Currency Pass portal then...

Select Currency Card in the top menu, and Currency Card Settings

Then click on the set default currency button

Once this change is made, any unquoted Bank transfer or BPAY loads will land in the default purse.

The minimum amount you can load is $20 (AUD) but who are you kidding, you'll be spending alot more than that on your holiday.

The maximum amount your can load onto your Currency Pass in one load is $10,000 (AUD). If you need more just speak to us in store.

How quickly do you need the money? Credit / debit card transfers are instantly available. Bank transfers will take 1 business day (Mon-Fri) and prior to 2pm AEST. BPAY will take a little longer, this is on average 3 business days. Alternatively, come and see us in store at one of our 140+ locations for more immediate assistance.

If a purchase cannot be completed because there are not enough funds in that currency on your card and you do have other currencies, the card will automatically convert other currencies to complete the purchase. The transaction will be split across 2 or more currencies and will appear that way on your statement. Read more about this in our PDS.

Log into your account by clicking on the login/register button at the top of the Travel Money Oz website. Once you're in, click on the Currency Card tab, and select Transfer between currencies. Select the currency you wish to transfer from, and to. From here you can enter the amount you wish to transfer. You will then see the amount of the new currency, along with the rate in which the transfer is completed. Don't forget to click "Confirm Transfer" to complete your transfer.

Please refer to our Fees for more information.

BALANCE & TRANSACTION HISTORY

  • How do I check my balance?
  • How do I check my transaction history?
  • Can I use my card for a pre-authorisation?
  • Why are there pending transactions?

You can check your balance by logging into my.travelmoneyoz.com or through our app. Your balance will be on the home page once you've logged in. Or, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas and you can hear it over the phone.

Should you need to take a peak at the shopping damage, you can view your full transaction history online at my.travelmoneyoz.com or via the Travel Money Oz app. Both of these options also allow you load additional funds and transfer money to other currencies.

If you’re using your Currency Pass for pre-authorisation for a bond payment with a merchant (i.e for a hotel, car hire or cruise), the pre-authorisation amount may not be released back onto your card for up to 30 days. If you pre-authorisation amount hasn't cleared within this period, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Any pending transactions will update as the merchant settles them. Once this happens it will be reflected on your transaction history. Should you need to dispute a transaction please give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

  • Can I use my card at an ATM?
  • Why are there extra ATM fees on my statement?

Make sure you're using an ATM that accepts Mastercard Always press "credit" If you've entered your PIN incorrectly more than 3 times, your card will be blocked as a security measure. If this happens please give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Every time you use an ATM, it's likely you'll be charged a standard ATM fee, with this, there may be additional charges from that ATM provider where you withdrew money. We've outlined this in our PDS so you're aware. The difference in fees may also be due to the transaction being made in your local currency, versus the currency of the country you're travelling in. We always recommend making purchases in the local currency where possible, and being aware of the ATM fees before you withdrawal cash as the more you use an ATM, the more fees you're likely to incur.

LOST OR STOLEN CARD

  • I have lost my card, or it has been stolen, what do I do?
  • How do I get a replacement card?

You have 2 x options here (please promise us you'll action immediately!)

To order a replacement card, give us a call on 13 61 95 and we can sort you out with your 2.0 card! If you're having issues activitating your card, also give us a bell on the same number.

CANCELLED OR SUSPENDED CARD

  • My card has been cancelled or suspended, what should I do?

Please give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

  • How do I cash out my remaining funds?

If you've returned home with leftover currency (well done, you!) you have a few options:

Your card is valid for 5 years, so you can hold onto it and use it again next trip. You can transfer any leftover funds to AUD and simply use the card for day to day transactions. You can have the balance transfered back into your Australian bank account. There's 2 x ways you can do this... 1. Online

Login to my.travelmoneyoz.com click on cash out to bank account. We'll need to confirm how much you want to cash out, your ID and your Australian bank details. You will also need to confirm your Mothers Maiden Name and DOB (this must be of the cardholder). This will take up to 5 x business days and you will be charged a $10 fee which will come out of your balance.

Give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas. This will take up to 10 x business days and you will be charged a $10 fee which will come out of your balance.

A Guide to Travel Money Cards

Often deemed the cheapest way to spend money abroad , travel money cards are deemed a failsafe option for many travellers. Given the rapid growth of the financial services sector, we want to find out if travel money cards are still as cutting edge as they once were, by comparing them to the new alternatives. Our job is to identify the best international money transfer services and payment providers in the industry: will travel money cards make the cut?

April Summers

What are travel money cards?

Travel money cards are a popular payment method for individuals headed abroad. Customers will load funds onto the card, using the money as foreign currency when overseas, much like a debit card is used at home. Also known as travel money prepaid cards or currency cards, they facilitate free foreign transactions and overseas ATM withdrawals.

We recommend finding a travel money card which lets you lock-in a favourable exchange rate and supports multiple currencies on one card, to make sure you are securing a flexible and cost-effective deal.

How do you use a travel money card?

Using a travel money card should be straightforward and stress-free. Simply load funds onto the card before you leave, and once abroad, you will be able to reload funds and change currencies using the website or associated money transfer app . The card can be used to make withdrawals, in-store purchases and book travel arrangements.

Where can I get a travel money card?

Travel money cards are available from different retailers and can be purchased and preloaded online, over the phone or in-store, depending on the brand. In the UK, popular brands include Travelex and the Post Office.

Where can I use a travel money card?

Again, this depends on the brand and where you get your money travel card from. Available currencies vary from card to card but commonly used currencies include US Dollars, UK Pound sterling, Euros, Japanese Yen and New Zealand Dollars. Make sure you check with the provider before ordering a travel money card.

How secure are travel money cards?

Generally, travel money cards are considered a lot safer than handling multiple currencies in cash, or travellers cheques, as your provider will be able to cancel it if need be. Furthermore, some of the best travel money cards employ an equivalent level of security to traditional debit cards, including a PIN code, touch ID and face recognition.

Many consider it safer to use a travel money card abroad than a debit card, as they are not associated with your bank account and therefore cannot be linked if lost or stolen.

Travel money cards vs. Credit cards: What is the difference?

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel money card is that your chosen currency is preloaded before you arrive in the foreign country and you won’t be charged conversion fees. This means you are able to benefit from the most favourable exchange rates, locking it in ahead of time and using the funds at a later date.

Most people who use their credit card abroad do it because it is more convenient. The cost of this convenience, however, can sometimes amount to 3 - 5% per use, depending on the transaction and financial institution. Making a foreign ATM withdrawal with your credit card can incur flat-fees of $5 and up, each time.

This being said, there are some excellent traveller credit cards on the market, so we would recommend users compare exchange rates and transfer fees offered by each provider before making a decision on which card is more beneficial.

If you're planning on using your credit card, we suggest you take a look at our credit card wire transfer guide.

What are the alternatives to travel money cards?

Multi-currency accounts.

International money transfer companies are often tailoring their products and services to meet the needs of their customers. Wise , offers a multi-currency account designed with “international people" in mind. This savvy travel credit card is aimed at frequent flyers who want to spend in various currencies in over 200 countries. Wise is a reliable company to trust with your overseas spending habits.

Challenger banks

More and more alternative service providers are popping up around the world, many of them offering reputable banking features for the modern traveller. In a bid to distinguish themselves from traditional banks, challenger banks are scrapping fees on foreign exchange and international spending. Monzo customers, for example, can benefit from free international ATM withdrawals as well as fee-free spending overseas.

do travel money cards expire

We hope this guide to travel money cards has enlightened you and helped you make a decision about whether this is a suitable payment method for your next trip overseas. We appreciate the value of your hard-earned cash and want all our customers to benefit from the best possible rates when dealing with international payments. Use our comparison tool today to make sure you are offered the most desirable exchange rate for your currency.

How to claim the money left on your travel card

Home from your holiday with cash left on your travel money card here's how to get it back..

In this guide

How to get the remaining funds off your travel money card

A comparison of prepaid travel money cards, some mistakes to avoid with leftover funds in your travel card.

Travel Money Cards

If you've still got foreign currency on your travel money card after a trip or your card's about to expire, it's still possible to get your money back. Use this guide to learn how to get funds back and what mistakes to avoid so you can get as much value as possible from your prepaid travel card.

Finder survey: What do Australians do with leftover funds on their travel card?

More than half of the Australians we surveyed simply transferred leftover money from their travel money card to their bank account.

The way you get your unused money varies depending on the travel money card. In some cases, it can be as easy as Internet banking, while in others it might require a trip down to the bank. Here's how it works with the major Australian prepaid travel cards.

Cash Passport Platinum Mastercard

If you have a Cash Passport Platinum Mastercard, you can get your funds off it by logging in to your account at auspost.com.au/cashpassport or by visiting a participating Australia Post outlet and presenting the card along with a valid form of photo ID. You can get funds even if the card has expired (check the expiry date on the front).

Just take note that the Cash Passport charges a monthly inactivity fee of $0 if you haven't used your card in 12 months. So if you want to cancel your card instead of keeping it for another trip, you can move the remaining balance to your bank account for a fee of $10 by calling Customer Service at +44 20 7166 7822.

The Travelex Travel Money Card

The card attracts a monthly inactivity fee of after 12 months of no usage, which can whittle away at your balance. It also charges a 2.95% withdrawal fee on domestic withdrawals within Australia. You can close your card at any distribution outlet and move remaining funds to your nominated bank account for an extra fee of .

If your card has expired, you can still get your funds through one of these options. Or, if you want to continue to use the account, you can request a new and have the money transferred over to it.

CommBank Travel Money Card

Valid for up to 3 years with no monthly inactivity fee, you can use the CommBank Travel Money Card on your next holiday or close it off and empty the remaining funds into your account at no charge. If you have an everyday CommBank account, you can transfer the money in real-time through NetBank. You can do this up to three months after the card has expired.

If you don't bank with CommBank, you can get your money off the travel card by visiting a branch. You can also withdraw the funds from any CommBank ATM free-of-charge after converting the foreign currency to Australian dollars.

With the , you can withdraw your remaining funds from a local ATM or close your account and have the funds transferred into your nominated account. Do note that withdrawals within Australia incur a 2.95% fee. A fee is also charged for account closures and cashing out any remaining value. You can do this by logging into the Suncorp Bank Multi-Cash Currency portal.

Qantas Travel Money

The Qantas Travel Money card doesn't incur an inactivity fee or ATM withdrawal fees, but a foreign exchange rate will apply when withdrawal is made in Australia on funds that are not in Australian dollars. You can close your card at any time at no cost by calling Mastercard Qantas Cash Global Support on 1300 825 302.

Australia Post

If you have funds remaining on your , you can either exchange the money back into your Australian dollars currency wallet and withdraw the funds from an ATM or fill out the Load&Go balance redemption form to have the funds sent to you via an Australia Post Money Order. It doesn't cost anything to close the account, but you will be charged $1 every month a balance remains in your account following expiry.

If you have money left over on your travel card, be sure to take note of and avoid the following possible pitfalls:

  • Leaving your card open. If you're not travelling anytime soon, you might want to close the card once you've withdrawn your funds. Otherwise, you may still have to pay any inactivity fees or annual maintenance fees attached to the card.
  • Expired cards. Most providers send a goodwill email to remind you of an impending expiry date. You can then request for closure, but failure to do so will unfortunately result in "Unclaimed Monies".
  • Unclaimed monies. While banks previously forfeited your money once your card expired, unclaimed monies legislation now dictates that balances above $500 (which are left untouched after three years or unclaimed after card expiry) must be transferred to the Commonwealth Bank and held in trust. You can run a free search of all unclaimed monies through the MoneySmart website. Amounts below $500 are essentially forfeited if you don't close your account and claim them.
  • Spending foreign currencies in Australia. Some banks charge domestic ATM withdrawal fees on your travel card, so be very careful reading the fine print. Since all fees are debited in Australian dollars, if you only have foreign currency on your card, that will incur more foreign currency conversion fees.

It is important to know the rules and conditions around your travel card. Depending on the fees and exclusions set by your provider, it may be wiser to withdraw remaining funds and close the account instead of keeping it for your next vacation. It is also worthwhile to factor in things like the card's loading and reloading fees as well as foreign currency trends when comparing your options.

what about Post Office purchased travel Vis card?

Hi Heather,

Thanks for your question!

I’ve added some information regarding the Australia Post Load&Go card to this page.

If you have money left on your Australia Post Load&Go card when you return from your holiday, you can either exchange the money back into your Australian dollars currency wallet and withdraw the funds from an ATM or fill out the Load&Go balance redemption form to have the funds sent to you via an Australia Post Money Order.

Please note that while you won’t be charged for closing the account, you will be charged $1 every month a balance remains in your account following expiry.

I hope this has helped.

Post Office Travel Card Review

do travel money cards expire

Travelling is one of the most exciting and liberating experiences out there. Whether you’re jetting off to a far-off destination or just exploring your own country, having the right travel card can make the whole experience easier and more enjoyable.

Are you planning a trip? If so, you may be wondering if the Post Office Travel Money Card is a good option for you. In this article, we’ll take a close look at the Post Office Travel Money Card, how it works, and what you need to know before using it.

By the end of this guide, you’ll have all the information you need to make an informed decision about whether or not the Post Office Travel Money Card is right for your next trip.

Table of Contents

Benefits of Having a Travel Card

First and foremost, travel cards are an excellent way to earn miles and points. This can be incredibly valuable if you are a frequent traveller or want to visit somewhere far off where you’ll have to pay high airfare. Plus, you can use these miles and points to book travel, hotels, flights, vacation packages, and more.

Another major advantage of travel cards is their versatility. As you travel, you’ll have the ability to withdraw cash from ATMs using your card, pay for purchases using your card, and even get roadside assistance on select cards. You’ll also have access to excellent trip cancellation and travel insurance.

Plus, travel cards are typically easier to qualify for than other types of credit cards. This is because many companies view travel cards as a “safe” type of credit. However, having a travel card can also help to improve your credit score.

Post Office Travel Cards: What Are They?

The Post Office Travel card is a Mastercard prepaid card, which can be loaded with a choice of 23 currencies. ATMs are available in more than 200 countries where you can spend and withdraw money.

You can load your account with any currency before travelling and then use it abroad without having to convert your currency.

Post Office Travel offers a contactless card that can be accessed through its app.

Post Office Travel Cards Benefits and Features

Here’s a quick look at the Post Office Travel card’s main features and benefits:

  • Payments for low-value items can be made quickly and conveniently using contactless technology
  • Compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • With the Travel app, you can manage your card, top it up, transfer currencies, as well as freeze it.
  • You can choose from 23 different currencies and top it up whenever you need it
  • Accepted everywhere Mastercard is accepted
  • Call centre assistance is available 24/7
  • Whenever there is currency left over, it can be transferred into another currency by using the wallet-to-wallet feature
  • If you use a local currency supported by your card to spend abroad, there are no fees

Post Office Travel Card Costs

Travel money cards from the Post Office cost nothing to order and no fees apply when you pay for purchases using the currency you hold. Provided your available balance is in a currency accepted by the card, you can shop, dine, and drink without any charges.

When using your card in a country that doesn’t support the currency of your card, you will have to pay a 3% foreign transaction fee. Using your card in Brazil, for example, will result in a 3% foreign transaction fee since the Brazilian Real isn’t a supported currency.

Despite the card’s currency support, you’ll still have to pay ATM withdrawal fees. Each currency has a different ATM fee.

An example would be:

  • Euro – 2 Euros
  • Canadian Dollar – 3 Canadian Dollars
  • US Dollar – 2.5 United States Dollars
  • Swiss Franc – 2.5 Switzerland Francs
  • Australian Dollar – 3 Australian Dollars
  • Pound Sterling – 1.5 Pounds Sterling plus 1.5% commission

Regarding fees, one final note. There is a three-year validity period on all Post Office Travel cards. After your card expires, you will be charged a maintenance fee of £2 per month.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates fluctuate based on the demand for currencies at the Post Office. Thus, you’ll receive a particular amount of travel money depending on the current exchange rate.

For travel money cards, you can get exchange rates at Post Office branches and on the website. Be sure to remember that rates may differ whether you are purchasing online, by phone, or in person.

In addition to the margin, the exchange rate at the Post Office will probably include a markup. When you search for the rate on Google or currency websites, you’ll most likely get an accurate one. Consequently, a margin will reduce the amount you receive when exchanging EUR, USD, or another currency.

A Post Office Travel Money company profits by offering its customers a better rate than the base rate. U.K. pounds are converted into U.S. dollars at a rate of 1.23 dollars per pound, for example.

If you exchange £400 through Post Office Travel Money, you can get 1.18 USD per pound. In this case, there is a difference of £16 or 4%. Exchange rates are better when you exchange large sums of money .

Exchange Rates for In-Branch Travel Money

According to the Post Office, in-branch exchange rates are determined by many factors, including branch location, competitor pricing, convenience, etc. The company will always strive to offer the best possible rate within these parameters. Online orders/distribution is the cheapest method for many retailers, as they can use centralised packing costs. Because of this, online exchange rates are always better than branch rates.

Comparing Post Office Travel Money Rates to Other Providers

There are several new services that it’s worth comparing directly to Post Office Travel Money.

Online-Only Banks

There have been several purely mobile banks launched in recent years both in the UK and across Europe. With services like Monzo, N26, Revolut, Monese, or Bunq, consumers can access a wide range of banking options.

Each of these modern financial institutions provides services such as money transfer agencies and international travel cards, and it makes sense to compare them with Post Office Travel Money.

For example, Monzo facilitates international money transfers through the popular exchange company Wise. For example, when sending a thousand pounds to a Swedish account using Monzo/Wise, the recipient receives 12,103 Swedish crowns versus 11,546 with Western Union, a difference of around 5%.

Other Currency Providers

It may also be possible to transfer money at a better rate in some countries. Using Xendpay, you could send 500 pounds to Saudi Arabia, and the beneficiary would receive 2,289 Saudi Riyals instead of 2,158 Saudi Riyals with Post Office Travel Money.

Supported Currencies

Prepaid travel cards from Post Office can be loaded with any of the following 23 currencies:

  • CAD – Canadian dollar
  • JPY – Japanese yen
  • USD – US dollar
  • AUD – Australian dollar
  • CHF – Swiss franc
  • AED – UAE dirham
  • CNY – Chinese yuan
  • DKK – Danish kroner
  • PLN – Polish zloty
  • CZK – Czech koruna
  • ZAR – South African rand
  • GBP – Pound sterling
  • TRY – Turkish lira
  • HKD – Hong Kong dollar
  • THB – Thai baht
  • HRK – Croatian kuna
  • SGD – Singapore dollar
  • HUF – Hungarian forint
  • SEK – Swedish kronor
  • SAR – Saudi riyal
  • NOK – Norwegian krone
  • NZD – New Zealand dollar

Sending Money With the UK Post Office

Many Post Office branches and their website offer Post Office Travel Money. They offer convenient and quick foreign exchange services. They are useful for local currency exchanges because they are so widely available. Post Office services like international money transfers and travel cards offer additional options for sending and spending overseas.

How to Get and Use a Post Office Travel Card?

Post Office travel cards are only available to UK residents over 18 years old.

Ordering Your Card

To order a Post Office Travel card, you can do one of three things:

  • You can order through the Post Office Travel app
  • Visit the Post Office website to apply online

It’s necessary to activate your travel card before you can use it. You’ll find detailed instructions in your welcome letter.

Using Your Card

ATMs and online sites that accept MasterCard accept Post Office travel cards, too. If you are buying something in person, you’ll need your PIN to verify your purchase and possibly your signature if the Chip and PIN system is not widely available in the country.

In some countries, contactless payments are also allowed for small amounts, although the rules and limitations vary.

According to its terms and conditions, you should not use your Post Office card in certain situations.

Some of them include:

  • Tolls on the road
  • Petrol pumps with self-service
  • Deposits for car rentals or hotels
  • Airline or cruise ship transactions

Adding Money to Your Card

With the Post Office Travel app, you can add money to your card easily. Additionally, you can add money at a local branch or on the Post Office website.

Buying Back Currencies

Having unused currency on your card gives you a few options. You may be able to withdraw cash at your local Post Office branch or ATM, but there may be a fee.

Wallet-to-wallet transfers are also available in the app. You can transfer unused balances from one currency to another. In preparation for your next trip to Europe, you can convert unused USD into EUR.

Each currency listed above can be topped up for between fifty pounds and five thousand pounds on your card. Your card can hold up to ten thousand pounds, as well as carry out transactions of up to thirty thousand pounds annually.

Different currencies have different limitations on cash withdrawals. For example, in a single transaction, you may withdraw up to 450 euros or 500 dollars.

App Overview

On Google Play and the App Store, you can download the Post Office Travel app for free. With the app, you can activate and order your card, check your balance, add money to it, and more.

In addition to transferring leftover currency between wallets, it’s possible to convert it to another currency you prefer by using the new wallet-to-wallet feature.

Furthermore, you can book airport parking, purchase travel insurance through the app, and use other features.

Contacting the Post Office

If you need assistance, you may reach the contact centre by dialling 0344 335 0109 in the United Kingdom or 0044 20 7937 0280 from abroad. Customer service is available each day of the week at any time of the day.

In addition, you can reach Customer Services at the Post Office in the following ways:

  • Postal mail at PO Box 3232, Cumbernauld, G67 1YU, Post Office Travel Card
  • Send an email to [email protected]

Post Office Travel Card: FAQs

Here are some common travel card problems you might encounter.

When I lose or damage a card, what do I do?

Post Office currency cards are easy to replace if lost or damaged. Your card will be blocked, and another one will be sent to you. App users can also freeze their cards.

How should I deal with a declined or blocked card?

The first thing you need to do is ensure that you have enough money in your account via the app. If you don’t have enough money in your account to purchase your item, call the customer care centre.

If I forget my PIN, what should I do?

Call the customer service centre if you cannot remember your travel money card PIN. If you need a new one, they can issue it for you.

My card is about to expire. What should I do?

A new card should automatically be sent to you. You can call the contact centre if it hasn’t arrived after the expiration date, and they’ll issue you another.

Post Office Prepaid Travel Card Summary

Travel cards from the Post Office are handy if you want to keep your money safe while you’re away from home. The convenience of not carrying cash around with you and not having to change money during your trip will make your trip much more enjoyable.

Because it’s a contactless card, you can pay in local currencies quickly and easily. This helps you budget because you can only spend what’s on it.

If you travel frequently or take multi-destination holidays, the card is convenient since you can store 23 currencies on it. A card that supports a variety of currencies might be more useful if you love exploring far-flung areas.

The exchange rate is a drawback to take into account. Post Office rates may be competitive (compared to airport exchange rates, for example), but they will likely include a margin or markup. ATMs also charge fees when you use your card.

Comparing other travel money cards could help you find a better deal, so make sure to shop around.

What are the charges and fees?

Full details of our charges and fees can be found in our   Travel Money Card terms and conditions .

The Post Office Travel Money Card is intended for use in the countries where the national currency is the same as the currencies on your card. If the currency falls outside of any of the 22 we offer on your card, you’ll be charged a cross-border fee. For example, using your card in Brazil will incur a cross-border fee because we do not offer the Brazilian real as a currency.

Cross border fees are set at 3% and are only applicable when you use your currency in a country other than the ones we offer.

For more information on cross border fees, please visit our cross border payment page.

There are no charges when using your card in retailers in the country of the currency on the card. This means that a €20 purchase in Spain would cost you €20 and will be deducted from your euro balance.

To avoid unnecessary charges to your card, wherever asked, you should always choose to pay for goods or withdraw cash in the currencies of your card. For example, if you are using the card in Spain you should always choose to pay in euro if offered a choice; choosing to pay in sterling (GBP) in this example would allow the merchant to exchange your transaction from euro to sterling. This would mean your transaction has gone through two exchange rate conversions, which will increase the total cost of your transaction.

For loads in Great British pounds, a load commission fee of 1.5% will apply (min £3, max £50). A monthly maintenance fee of £2 will be deducted from your balance 12 months after your card expires. Expiration dates can be found on your TMC; all cards are valid for up to 3 years.

A cash withdrawal fee will be charged when withdrawing cash from a UK Post Office branch or from any ATM globally that accepts Mastercard.

Manage your Travel Money Card

Here's how to get the most from your Travel Money Card.

Activate and set a PIN

Once you’ve got your Travel Money Card,  activate and set a PIN online  in NetBank or under Cards in the CommBank app and load at least AUD 50, or currency equivalent, to get started.

You’ll also get a back-up card to use if your main one is ever lost or stolen. Here’s how to let us know if that happens .

Load and reload currency

There are 3 ways to load currency on to your Travel Money Card:

  • NetBank & the CommBank app:  Transfer money from your eligible CommBank account to your card in  NetBank  or the  CommBank app
  • Using BPAY:  Enter the Biller Code 113167 then your customer reference number (your 16-digit Travel Money Card number). The money may take two to three working days to appear on your card.
  • At a CommBank branch: Find your nearest branch

You can load up to 13 currencies at a maximum value of AUD 50,000 (or foreign currency equivalent) on your Travel Money Card at any one time.

Reload in NetBank and the CommBank app on the go, wherever you are. Check our fees & charges .

Set or change a currency order

The currency order determines which currency is used to pay for things. The local currency is automatically selected when you pay for something, if it’s loaded on your card.

If you don’t have enough local currency to cover the payment then the next available currency is checked.

Here’s how it works.

You have loaded three currencies on your card 1) USD 2) GBP 3) NZD. A purchase costs NZ$100 but you only have a balance of NZ$50. Your card will check if you have enough USD to pay because that currency is first in the currency order. If you don’t have enough USD then GBP will be checked because that’s second in your currency order.

If no currency can pay the transaction in full, your card will be declined.

Check and change your currency order in NetBank (Select account then Change Currency Order) or the CommBank app (Select Account then Account Settings and tap Set currency order)

Daily transaction limits

It’s important to be aware of daily transaction limits.

Maximum value of purchases per day:  Unlimited, however no more than your available balance.

Maximum amount you can withdraw from ATMs per day: AUD 2,500 or foreign currency equivalent. However, most ATM operators have a limit on how much you can withdraw from an ATM per transaction which may be less than our maximum.

Maximum amount you can withdraw over the counter per day: AUD 2,500 or foreign currency equivalent.

If someone asks why the card doesn’t have your name printed on it point out that it’s a prepaid card and you’ve signed the back of the card. They can use your signature to verify the transaction.

Valid for 4 years. Request a new one.

Your Card Expiry Date is printed on the front of your card – it’s valid for 4 years. When it expires, your card isn’t automatically reissued.

Renew your card 6 months before it expires (and up to 3 months after it’s expired) in NetBank, the CommBank app or at your nearest branch . Your balance will be automatically transferred to your new card at no additional cost.

When you ask us to reissue an expiring or expired Travel Money Card, your existing one (and back up card) will stop working immediately.

If you don’t renew within 3 months after it’s expired, you’ll no longer be able to access your account in NetBank or the CommBank app.

Security & support

Purchase security insurance cover.

Purchase Security Insurance provides cover for items purchased on your Travel Money Card that are lost, stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase.

Problems with your card

If you are overseas and your card doesn't work at a particular merchant or ATM make sure you’re using:

  • The correct PIN (some countries require a 6 digit PIN - you must add ‘00’ after entering your 4 digit PIN)
  • An activated card
  • A Visa or Mastercard ATM (it won’t work otherwise)

If none of these then you may be trying to withdraw more than your available balance, exceeding your daily usage limit or exceeding the ATM withdrawal limit as set by the local ATM provider. Log on to NetBank or the CommBank app to check your balance.

If you have checked all of these things and the card is still not working, please contact us on +61 2 9999 3283 (reverse charges accepted).

What to do if you’ve lost your card or it’s stolen

If you’ve lost your Travel Money card, or you think it might’ve been stolen, we can have an emergency replacement card sent to you anywhere in the world.

You may also be eligible for an Emergency Cash Advance, giving you access to cash within 24-48 hours (often on the same day).

Call us in an emergency on:

  •   1300 660 700  within Australia
  • +61 2 9999 3283 from overseas (reverse charges accepted)

When calling from overseas using your mobile, standard roaming charges may apply. To avoid roaming charges, call the international operator in the country you’re in from a landline and give them our reverse charges number +61 2 9999 3283.

If you have insufficient funds of the currency you need, or you don’t have the currency of the country you are visiting on your card, you can still use your card to make a payment. The Travelex Money Card will automatically convert the amount of the transaction from local currency into the currency/ies available on your card, in the order described above, at an exchange rate determined by Mastercard on the day the transaction is processed (please see the fees and limits section for more details).

Transactions and fees that require a currency conversion are calculated using the daily rate determined by Mastercard.

What do I do when asked if I want to pay for my transaction in ‘My local home currency’ instead of the local currency of the country? (DCC)

Some foreign retailers and ATM operators give cardholders the choice of paying in either the currency of the country they’re visiting or in their own local home currency. If you’ve loaded funds in the currency of the country you’re in, we recommend that you don’t choose to pay in your local home currency and you should pay in the currency of the country you’re in instead. If you opt to pay for a transaction in a currency other than the local currency, you may incur additional cost.

What if I am visiting a country and do not have the right currency on the card?

You can still use your Travelex Money Card to make a payment if you don’t have the currency of the country you’re visiting on your card. Where you don’t have a balance in the currency of the transaction, your card will be debited according to the predetermined default order of priority, which is as follows: Australian dollars, US dollars, British pounds, euros, Canadian dollars, New Zealand dollars, Japanese yen, Singapore dollars, Hong Kong dollars and Thai baht. Funds will be debited from the balance of each currency in this order until the relevant transaction amount has been satisfied. Transactions and fees that require a currency conversion are calculated using the daily rate determined by Mastercard.

Can I get cash back when making a purchase?

If you don’t have enough of that site’s trading currency, and you’ve got other currencies on the card, the transaction will be debited firstly from the remaining local currency, and then from the other currencies in the order of priority until the sufficient amount is found. If you don't wish to keep the funds for further trips or shopping online, please go into a Travelex Store or online at Travelex.com.au to have the funds returned to you in Australian dollars.

Can I get access to emergency cash?

Once you’ve contacted Card Services to report your lost or stolen card, we can arrange your emergency cash in the local currency (up to the value remaining on the card and subject to availability) anywhere in the world, normally within 20 minutes (in some remote locations this could take up to 24 hours). Call Card Services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can find contact numbers here .

What is pre-authorization?

Whilst your card is really adaptable, it’s not suitable for everything. When you use your card as a deposit with car rental companies, hotels or cruise lines, they may require authorisation of an amount larger than the transaction as a guarantee of payment. Although you will only be charged for the actual and final amount of the transaction, any additional amount that is included in the initial authorization will be unavailable to you until the final transaction settles. Therefore, we do not recommend transactions that could create larger authorizations in which case the funds could be unavailable to you for a period of time. You can of course use your card to settle your final bill.

Will pre-authorisations be applied to transactions on my Travelex Money Card?

Some businesses may require pre-authorisation of the estimated bill (for example, deposits) – these are usually hotels, car rental businesses and cruise ships. In this case, the estimated amount of the bill will be temporarily unavailable. After the final bill is paid, it may take up to 30 days before the pre-authorised amount is available again. Not all businesses will accept your card as a means of pre-authorising payment. We recommend that you don’t use your Travelex Money Card for pre-authorisations. You can of course use your Travelex Money Card to settle your final bill.

How do I close my Travelex Money Card?

You can call Card Services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can find contact numbers here .

Are there any countries or geographical regions the Travelex Money Card won’t work in?

Yes, there are a few countries and geographical regions where it’s not possible to use your Travelex Money Card. If you attempt to withdraw cash from a cash machine or use your card at merchants in any of these countries or geographical regions, your request will be declined. The countries and geographical regions currently affected are: Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Russia as well as Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea. Additionally, all Mastercard’s will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs.

What happens if I do not have sufficient funds available in the relevant currency to cover the value of the transaction plus the tolerance amount?

If the value of the transaction plus the tolerance percentage or flat amount exceeds the relevant available currency balance on the card, the remaining amount will be funded by converting that amount into the next available currency in the order of priority. The exchange rate used is the rate determined by Mastercard to be the wholesale rate in effect on the day the transaction is authorised by the merchant plus the foreign exchange fee.

What happens if I do not have sufficient funds available in my total available Card Fund to cover the value of the transaction plus the tolerance amount?

If you do not have sufficient funds available in your total available Card Fund to cover both the value of the transaction plus the tolerance amount, the transaction may be declined.

For example, you have lunch at a restaurant and the total bill is US$50.00. You only have US$50.00 on your card and there is a 20% tolerance applied to restaurant transactions. If the restaurant tries to charge your card with US$50.00, it will be declined because 20% tolerance is added to the transaction amount and there will be insufficient funds to cover US$60.00 (US$50 + 20% tolerance (US$10) = US$60.00).

Please ensure you remember to take the tolerance amount into account. If you are using your card at one of the merchant types where tolerance is applied, you may be unable to use your card, unless you have enough in your total available Card Fund to cover the addition of tolerance. If the merchant supports it however, you can use your card to make a partial payment, and cover the balance with some other payment method. Just make sure you tell the cashier before you start the transaction and confirm the amount you want deducted from your card. The cashier should process your card payment first, and then accept the remainder of the balance in whichever way you want to pay it.

My Travelex Money Card got rejected when paying, what now?

If your Card is declined in a shop, these are the things you should check first: 1. Check you have enough money on your card for the purchase you wish to make. You can always use your card to make a partial payment and settle the balance with another card or cash, if the merchant supports it. Make sure the merchant processes your Travelex Money Card payment first. 2. Be aware that some bars, restaurants and automated petrol pumps may require the card to have an available balance greater than the purchase amount before they will authorise the payment. Please check your Terms and Conditions for more details. 3. Check you are using the correct PIN. You can get a PIN reminder at any time by selecting the ‘PIN Reveal’ option in My Account or by calling Card Services and selecting the PIN option. 4. Check that the retailer you are purchasing from accepts Mastercard Prepaid. Because of new EU requirements, merchants in the EU/EEA will be able to choose whether or not they wish to accept Mastercard prepaid/debit/credit or commercial cards. Please check with the merchant, as they have to inform you if they decide not to accept all types of Mastercard cards. Merchants will also be expected to display this information prominently at the entrance of the shop and at the till or, in the case of distance sales, this information should be displayed on the merchant’s website or other applicable electronic or mobile medium. 5. Your card has maximum limits on how much you can withdraw or spend, which are shown in the fees and limits section. Check that you have not exceeded the maximum daily amount that you can spend in a shop.

If my prepaid card expires, do I lose my money?

In some cases, when your prepaid card expires, you might have to pay a fee so that you do not lose your money. Check your cardholder agreement to see if there are actions you need to take to prevent this loss.

If your prepaid card expires while you still have money on it, you may be able to request a replacement card to access the funds. You may also try to close out your account by requesting that your balance be mailed to you in the form of a check. The provider might charge you a fee for this. Be sure to check your cardholder agreement to see if you can get back the money that may still be on the card when it expires.

The rules for gift cards are different. Gift card funds must be good for at least five years under federal law, and some states laws give you more time. Under federal law, inactivity fees can only be charged after 12 months of inactivity and if other conditions are met.

If Your Debit Card Expires While You’re Traveling, Do These 7 Things

T raveling can be an exciting adventure, full of new experiences and memories to cherish. However, it can quickly turn into a stressful situation if you find your debit card has expired. Being far from home without immediate access to your funds can be worrisome, but don’t panic. Here are some important steps to take if your debit card expires while you are on vacation.

1. Contact Your Bank Immediately

The moment you realize your debit card has expired, contact your bank or card issuer. Most banks have international toll-free numbers specifically for travelers who have issues with their debit cards. Inform them about your situation and verify your identity. Banks are familiar with handling these situations and can quickly help you find a solution.

2. Request an Emergency Card Replacement

Ask if your bank can expedite a new debit card to your current location. Many banks offer an emergency card replacement service for travelers. While this might come with a fee, it’s worth the peace of mind. Provide a secure and verifiable address, like your hotel, where the card can be delivered.

3. Use Digital Wallet Services

In today’s digital age, accessing your funds without needing the physical debit card is often possible. If your bank supports it, you can add your debit card to a digital wallet like Apple Pay , Google Pay or Samsung Pay. This way, you can continue to make purchases and pay for services with your smartphone or a smartwatch.

4. Explore Wire Transfer Options

If getting a replacement card is not feasible, consider having money wired to you. You can use wire transfer services like Western Union or MoneyGram to receive cash without needing a debit card. You’ll need to provide identification and the transaction details, but it’s a reliable way to access your money.

5. Use Other Cards

Always travel with more than one form of payment. If you have a credit card or another debit card , now is the time to use it. This reduces the inconvenience of having a single expired card and ensures you’re not stranded without access to your funds.

6. Withdraw Funds Through a Partner Bank

Some banks have international partnerships with other banks. In such cases, you might be able to withdraw cash directly from a partner bank’s branch. You’ll need to present your passport and possibly answer security questions, but it’s an effective way to access your money.

7. Precautionary Measures for the Future

To avoid a situation like this in the future, make a note of your card’s expiration date before you leave on vacation. Most banks send out new cards a few weeks before the old one expires, so ensure your address is up-to-date. Additionally, consider setting up travel alerts on your account and inform your bank of your travel plans. That way, you’ll cut down any risk of fraud alerts or blocks issued on your account.

If your debit card stops working while you’re traveling, it can be a hassle, but it’s not a huge disaster. If you act quickly and check out other options, you can still get to your money and have an enjoyable and relaxing time on your trip. Make sure to have a second way to pay ready and the phone number for your bank with you, just in case you need it while you’re on the go.

Do credit card points expire?

PayPal Editorial Staff

April 25, 2024

Credit card points can offer valuable rewards, from travel perks to cash back. But can these rewards expire? Often, yes, but it depends on the card or rewards provider and program terms.

Understanding a credit card's specific policy is crucial to maximizing potential rewards and avoid losing points.

Expiration policies

Expiration policies of rewards credit card points may vary significantly among issuers. Some points never expire, so long as the individual’s account remains open. Others may expire within a specific timeframe, often after several months or years of inactivity from the date the points were earned. Some issuers may allow individuals to reinstate their rewards, often for a fee.

It’s important for people to regularly review the terms and conditions of credit card rewards programs. Otherwise, they potentially risk losing points that could have been redeemed for cash back, statement credits, or other rewards.

Issuer-specific terms

In addition to a credit card’s expiration policy, understanding other factors and issuer-specific terms that could lead to the loss of points can help maximize the benefits of a rewards credit card.

Here are some common examples that could lead to a loss of points:

  • Closing an account:  Closing an account without redeeming accrued rewards may result in lost points.
  • Late payments:  Missing credit card payments can result in penalties, potentially impacting a person’s rewards.
  • Returns and refunds:  Refunding purchases may lead to the deduction of corresponding rewards.
  • Falling out of good standing:  Consistent late payments or exceeding credit limits may lead to the suspension or cancellation of rewards.
  • Limited-time promotions:  Points earned through promotional offers may have expiration dates or specific terms that limit their utility if not used within a certain timeframe.

Redemption options and restrictions

Expiration policies often shape how rewards programs work. For example, these terms may affect what rewards are available, how flexible redemption is, and whether points can be combined with other accounts.

Here are some factors to keep in mind when examining a credit card’s rewards policy:

  • Time-sensitive rewards:  When points expire after a certain period, companies often offer rewards that need to be claimed within a specific timeframe. These can include perks like travel vouchers or discounts on products.
  • Flexible redemption:  If points have a long shelf life or don’t expire, individuals may have more freedom in how they're redeemed. For instance, points could potentially be saved up for larger rewards.
  • Redemption restrictions:  Expiration policies may come with certain limitations on redemption. For example, customers may need to accumulate a minimum number of points before they can redeem them, or certain rewards may only be available during specific promotional periods.
  • Combining points:  Points with expiration dates may have restrictions on transferring or combining them with points from other accounts. This can limit the flexibility of redemption options and make it more challenging to maximize the value of points.

Learn more about paying with rewards .

Communication from card issuers

Credit card issuers utilize various communication methods to notify individuals about impending credit card points expiry. These methods often include:

  • Email notifications:  These emails typically provide details on the number of points at risk and the deadline for redemption.
  • Mobile app alerts:  Credit card issuers may send push notifications to remind users about expiring points.
  • Text messages:  Some issuers opt to send text messages to alert customers about upcoming point expirations.
  • Online account portal:  These notifications may appear prominently upon logging in, prompting customers to take action before their points expire.

Timely alerts may help individuals to redeem points before they expire. However, it's important to note that it’s generally a user's responsibility to stay informed about expiration dates and redemption options. By staying informed, customers can make strategic decisions to maximize the value of rewards and enjoy their perks to the fullest extent.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

[ Return to card summary ]

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
