Meet the dog thespians of 'A Dog's Journey,' a mutt method-acting masterclass

dog's journey dog names

Spoiler alert! What follows reveals key plot points in "A Dog's Journey," though not the ending. You might want to see the movie before reading.

The pooch ensemble in "A Dog's Journey" (in theaters Friday) has serious acting chops.

These skills are required in the saga, a continuation of 2017's "A Dog's Purpose," which follows the spirit of Bailey as he's reincarnated into pup after pup (all voiced by Josh Gad ) before eventually passing to heaven.

The circle of life requires the full spectrum of canine emotion – from cuddly to consequential. Director Gail Mancuso, who has five dogs of her own, pulls Oscar-worthy performances from her canine thespians in a movie where there's a pooch in every scene.

For your consideration, we present the leading contenders:

Buddy brought the beautiful heartbreak early.

Boss dog Buddy (a Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mountain dog mix) was played by three lookalike dogs, but mainly Odin, the film's primary star.

Odin was tasked with dying in the lap of Buddy's beloved owner Ethan (Dennis Quaid), which happens early in the film. It was already a Kleenex moment before Odin lifted his head for a final, soulful look into Quaid's eyes and faded. "That look was pure magic," Mancuso says. "That moment resonated with me, as I have experienced my own dog looking at me during our goodbye. It's a special bond."

'A Dog's Way Home':  How Shelby went from junkyard stray to Hollywood star

Molly was more than adorable energy.

The energetic Molly, who steps in to support the movie's human heroine CJ when her mom moves her away, was played by two Beagliers (a beagle crossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel). Lead dog Lemy showed parkour skills, bounding through backyard obstacles (down stairs, over a gate) to jump into young CJ's arms (played by Abby Ryder Fortson). "And then started licking my face all over," Fortson says.

But Lemy had to get tough later and "bite" the leg of the film's villain (Jake Manley). Dog trainer Bonnie Judd first taught Lemy to tug with a toy, then placed a pouch of meat in Manley's pant leg. "It's kind of like a pinata," Judd says. "The more they go at it, the more they get."

Firefighter says goodbye to rescue dog in viral post: Dog owners can relate because pets are family

Parting is such sweet sorrow for Big Dog.

Big Dog, played by an African Boerboel named Phil, has a small role, portraying a chance meeting with his spiritual owner CJ, now an adult played by Kathryn Prescott, in a roadside store. Phil hit his marks, and gave a hearty paw-shake. But the soulful-eyed dog hit dramatic paydirt when he bid farewell forever to CJ.

"When he's saying goodbye as he's leaving, it's so sad that it made me cry," Prescott says.

Buddy and an adorable toddler make giddy magic.

Emma Volk was 2 when she shot her screen debut as Buddy's kid friend (and Ethan's granddaughter) in "A Dog's Journey." But her giggling chemistry with Odin's Buddy is magic, with dog and toddler clearly happy together in a way that goes beyond acting. "Emma just really loved the big brute, and it looks natural," Judd says.

Max's exit scene was tough even for the dog actor.

Rescue dog Max, CJ's adulthood dog, was played by four Biewer terriers. Belle, the character's primary actor, was so invested in her death scene, she had trouble letting Prescott's CJ tearfully sing to her.

"The first time, Belle really wanted to kiss her tears away, but after that she kept her head down and closed her eyes each time," Judd says. "It's a tough scene for any dog but Belle was still a super-hyper puppy. Yet she did exactly as I asked over and over again. On each cut, she would quickly kiss CJ and play."

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. — Police are seeking information on who left a dog tied to a tree in a wooded area of South Windsor , according to the Tyler Rrgional Animal Care Shelter (TRACS).

Police were called to the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary around 11 a.m. Monday for a report of a barking dog. Someone found the dog while walking in the area; its collar was strapped to the dog and a tree branch, TRACS said.

The dog's light blue and gray collar had the name "Kobe" written on it, officials said. The collar could also be read as "Kade."

Officers investigated the area but there are no home surveillance cameras in the area where the dog was left, TRACS said.

Now, the shelter is asking the public to share any information they may have on the dog.

"Maybe your neighbor had a dog matching this description that is no longer there, or you heard someone talking about leaving this sweet boy," TRACS said in a  social media post , asking users for help.

Anyone with information about this dog and how it ended up tied to a tree branch is asked to call South Windsor Police at 860-648-6239.

Desmond's Army , a non profit animal advocate group, said it's offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to answers and the arrest of who tethered the dog to the tree.

Every Place Taylor Swift References in Tortured Poets Department , from the Black Dog to the Heath

Here's a dissection of the specific places Taylor Swift mentions in "The Tortured Poets Department" song lyrics, including The Chelsea Hotel

Taylor Swift has processed her emotions around the world.

The pop superstar released The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, her eagerly anticipated album she described as an " anthology of new works " that reflect a "fleeting and fatalistic" period in her life that has ended.

After dropping the expected body of work at midnight, Swift surprised fans two hours later by announcing that TTPD is a secret double album . The second installment consists of 15 additional songs.

Within each of Swift's 31 tracks — with a total run time over two hours — are intricately detailed stories from past relationships laced with longing and heartache .

While the singer-songwriter explicitly mentions many of the locations in which she sorted through her feelings throughout those moments, she leaves it up to listeners to decode who the past lover is that she's referencing — in classic Swift fashion.

Fans have already connected songs to  her ex Joe Alwyn  and The 1975 frontman  Matty Healy , as well as  her current boyfriend Travis Kelce . Swift also name-drops celebrities like Charlie Puth , Stevie Nicks , and Jack Antonoff — in addition to singing about fellow "tortured poets."

Read on for all the real places Taylor Swift mentions in The Tortured Poets Department , including where she's experienced highs and lows, love and heartache.

Swift announced that “Fortnight,” featuring  Post Malone , is the first single off The Tortured Poets Department . The state of Florida is mentioned in the lyrics.

"Going to Florida by the car you won / But it won’t start up till you touch, touch, touch me," writes Swift.

When speaking with iHeartRadio, Swift said "Fortnight” is a song that "exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album, one of which being fatalism, longing, pining away, lost dreams." She said that she "always imagined" the song being set in an "American town where the American Dream you thought would happen to you didn't."

Florida is seemingly a recurring place of escape for the singer, at least metaphorically within TTPD album. In fact, the eighth song on the track is simply titled " Florida!!! " (featuring Florence + The Machines).

"'Florida!!!' is a song I wrote with Florence + The Machine, and I think I was coming up with this idea of like, what happens when your life doesn’t fit, or your choices you’ve made catch up to you," Swift told iHeartRadio of creating the track.

The singer highlighted how at times in life "you’re surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgment, and circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you’d be and you just want to escape from everything you’ve ever known," leading one to question "is there a place you could go?"

Swift also explained she is "always watching"  Dateline  and noticed how "people have these crimes that they commit, where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida."

The Chelsea Hotel

The album's title track, "The Tortured Poets Department," mentions The Chelsea Hotel in its lyrics.

"I laughed in your face and said / 'You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith' / This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots," writes Swift.

The Chelsea Hotel is a famed landmark in New York City. The 12-story Manhattan hotel, which was built in the late 19th century, famously housed writers, painters, authors and socialites. Thomas and Smith, both renowned writers in their own right, lived in the hotel.

It reopened in 2022 after a 12-year-long renovation and was just named one of the 21 best hotels in New York by Travel + Leisure.

Swift admits in "Down Bad" that she lets her emotions out in the gym. (She previously detailed her tour prep to  Time , sharing  she trained at Dogpound ).

"Now I’m down bad, crying at the gym / Everything comes out teenage petulance / F—k it if I cant have him," she writes on the album's fourth track.

The Heath in London

"So Long, London" is one of the most heart-wrenching tracks on TTPD . The song's lyrics detail Swift's attempt at saving a failing relationship and the loneliness she dealt with during that time.

"I stopped trying to make him laugh/ Stopped trying to drill the safe," she sings. (In her  Time  cover interview, Swift opened up about moving to a "foreign country" — likely the U.K., where she often spent time with Alwyn — amid her  public feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian .)

Later in the "So Long, London" lyrics, Swift makes a reference to "the house in the Heath" she left behind. A heath is technically an uncultivated ground where grass and small plants grow, but Hampstead Heath is also a notable London park and the adjacent neighborhood of Hampstead is home to many celebrities.

This isn't the first time Swift has made mention of the location in one of her songs. On "London Boy" off 2019's Lover, she sings "Like a Tennessee Stella McCartney on the Heath."

The Black Dog

The Black Dog

The Black Dog is a real bar in London, and also the title of a TTPD bonus track. The lyrics tell the story of a person she watches enter the bar, a move that seemingly betrays her.

"I am someone who until recent events / You shared your secrets with / And your location, you forgot to turn it off," she writes in verse one. "And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog / And pierce new holes in my heart," she continues.

Swift reiterates that this person "forgot to turn it off," likely in reference to their location tracking on their phone. In the chorus, she goes on to say, "I just don't understand how you don't miss me / In The Black Dog, when someone plays 'The Starting Line.'

"The Starting Line" is mentioned a few times within the album, possibly in reference to the band often covered by The 1975. Within the song, Swift writes about this person meeting a girl at the bar, but she's too young to know the pop-punk band from the early 2000s.

Central Park

Swift mentions the lake in New York's Central Park when singing "The Bolter," the last song on the album. She sings, "When it's all roses, portrait poses / Central Park Lake in tiny rowboats / What a charming Saturday."

The singer previously teased to the crowd during her Melbourne tour stop on The Eras Tour earlier this year. Swift told the crowd her latest work was something that she "needed" to make.

"It was really a lifeline for me — just the things that I was going through, the things that I was writing about ... it kind of reminded me why songwriting actually gets me through my life," she said. "I've never had an album that I needed songwriting more than I needed it on  Tortured Poets ."

Which Taylor Swift Ex Was at The Black Dog

Repeated streams of The Tortured Poets Department are still leaving Us with one burning question: Which of Taylor Swift ‘s exes went to The Black Dog ?

Following the release of Swift’s 11th record on Friday, April 19, the London bar’s social media presence exploded. “POV Your cozy little pub gets name-dropped in the new Taylor Swift album ??!” read one video shared via TikTok on Friday, asking playfully in the caption, “How do we cope? Swifties please advise on next steps 😅🐶🖤.”

While some fans believe the lyrics were inspired by Matty Healy , a fan of the band The Starting Line, others think Joe Alwyn is the subject due to his British roots. (Healy, 35, also hails from the U.K.)

Which Taylor Swift Ex Was at The Black Dog Matty Healy

The Black Dog is leaning into all the speculation on social media, updating its bios online to include, “🎶Home to tortured poets @Taylor Swift.” Those of Us looking for answers about which famous ex could be walking into the pub, however, might still come up short.

“POV You work at The Black Dog (yes the actual pub Taylor name-dropped) and are trying desperately to figure out if it was Matty or Joe,” read another TikTok video, which showed an employee frantically searching for evidence.

The caption teased, “GOING THROUGH FOOTAGE LIKEEEEE who forgot to turn their location off bestie?? @Taylor Swift.”

Some fans have theorized that the song could actually be about both Alwyn, 33, and Healy given the timing of each relationship. Us confirmed in April 2023 that Swift and Alwyn split after six years of dating. One month later, she was linked to Healy, but the pair called off their whirlwind romance in June 2023.

Which Taylor Swift Ex Was at The Black Dog Joe Alwyn

Swift includes aspects of each breakup throughout TTPD , but the album largely centers her history with Healy. The twosome were rumored to be dating back in 2014 before reconnecting last year.

Regardless of who served as her muse — Swift’s current boyfriend, Travis Kelce , even had a few songs written in his honor — the Grammy winner made it clear that she’s moved on while celebrating the album’s release.

“This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up,” she wrote on Friday. “There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

The Starting Line on Getting a Taylor Swift Shout-Out in ‘The Black Dog,’ 22 Years After Pop-Punk Band’s Breakout: ‘It’s an Unexpected Showering of Love’

taylor swift and the starting line tortured poets black dog

There’s no golden ticket quite like the golden ticket of finding your name in the lyrics of a Taylor Swift song. It’s one thing if you’re Charlie Puth, and already on a list of Spotify’s 150 top monthly artists. But for another musical artist name-checked in Swift’s album “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” the impact stands to be much more impactful. The pop-punk band the Starting Line gets mentioned twice in the song “The Black Dog,” and suddenly nostalgia for (or newfound curiosity about) the Philadelphia-based group is skyrocketing.

Popular on Variety

The Starting Line actually enjoys the distinction of being the only other artist to get mentioned twice by name in the album lyrics. Take that, Puth, Blue Nile, Patti Smith, Dylan Thomas, Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks! (Actually, it could be three times, since, beyond the two mentions in “The Black Dog,” the phrase “the starting line” also pops up separately in the song “Fresh Out the Slammer,” but it isn’t used as a band reference there, just a figure of speech… or is it? )

The name pops up in the first chorus:

I just don’t understand how you don’t miss me In The Black Dog When someone plays The Starting Line and you jump up But she’s too young to know this song That was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming Old habits die screaming

And wait, in the second round, they’re back:

“I feel like it’s trying to impart some sort of nostalgia of the time and the kind of music that we were making at that time, and I’m very flattered that we were the representation of that,” Vasoli says.

Swift would have been turning 13 the year “Best of Me” came out, a number that obviously holds a special place for her, even possibly as an age. And even though the song was a national hit with emo fans, establishing the Starting Line as Warped Tour material, the group remains hometown heroes in the Philadelphia area, not far from where Swift grew up, which may solidify a nostalgic appeal for her.

Yet the lyrics also clearly establish that excitement over sharing “Best of Me” was something that she and the person she just broke up with in the song had in common… and Swift doesn’t often lie in her material. So the question riling fans up has been: If it’s not fiction, is it more likely to be about Matty Healy or Joe Alwyn?

“I’m certainly getting a crash course in the backstory between the characters that are involved in this thing,” says Vasoli, not picking any sides himself. “So it’s been a pretty fascinating study in fandom, for sure.”

Lending obvious weight to the argument in favor of Healy, the frontman for the 1975, is that he actually sang “Best of Me” twice in concert while dating Taylor Swift , at least by the timelines laid out on the world wide web. Or at least he sang a snippet of the Starting Line’s signature song at a show April 21, 2023 and again on May 3 of last year. “Shout-out to people in their thirties,” Healy quipped after performing the song excerpt. Now, it’s not easy to say conclusively that no one else who has split with Swift in recent years was a major emo-head, too, but the Internet is just sayin’.

When Healy started showing his love for the Starting Line in concert last spring, “we heard about it, but it certainly didn’t get the kind of attention that this did. It seems like now people are kind of checking out those YouTube videos of him covering that song a little bit more, and there’s a little bit more investigation to be had about them. At the time it was just sort of a cool thing that was passed around between the guys, but didn’t make it much further past that.”

(Arguing against the theory that “The Black Dog” is about Healy, though: Based on photographs Jack Antonoff posted of studio sessions from last year, fans believe the song was recorded in mid-May 2023. Which would lend itself to a hypothesis that it’s really about Alwyn, and that she played the song for Healy, who was then inspired to cover “Best of Me” in concert. A tangled web.)

But they wouldn’t be playing “Best of Me” over the PA in a metal bar, so we can probably at least rule the Paris possibility out, right? “I don’t know. You know, we’re heavier than you would think,” Vasoli counters. “We surprise people with our heaviness once we get up there.”

But he doesn’t have any personal knowledge of any of the Black Dog geo-location possibilities. “No, the only black dogs I’ve met are just good boys and girls out there at the dog park,” he says. “Your guess is as good as mine on that one.”

The Starting Line only has two shows on the books at present: a gig at the Novo in Los Angeles on the first day of summer, June 21, followed much further down the line by a set at the When We Were Young festival Oct. 19. The Starting Line actually played quite a few shows in 2023; these were the most the band had done in about a quarter-century.

Could they book a lot more now, and bill themselves as one of the few Swift-endorsed rock ‘n’ roll bands of their ilk in the world?

“You know, it’s been sort of a point of conversation of, how much do you lean into something like this?” Vasoli admits, a little cagey even with himself about how much to be seen as taking advantage of it. “Because something like this is not something you really plan for in your music career,. The reverberations have been very big and we’re just sort of trying to accept it with gratitude at this point, sitting back and just seeing what happens from it.”

Although the singer says those two concert dates “are it for now, there’s gonna be more that’s coming down the pike and more that’s getting booked. The vast majority of the band has day jobs that keep them obligated to stay home a little bit, more than some of the other bands. So we don’t hit the road for too long on a regular basis, but we’re trying to get into a rhythm where we can do more of it.”

He also says new music will be heard from the group, for the first time since a 2015 EP.

“There’s been an uptick in us playing together, and a really great interpersonal dynamic between the band members recently that has been very creative and inspirational, playing together recently. So we’ve been into a creative process writing new music since last year. We’re just collecting everything and figuring out the best way to get that out there. But we’re generating music and have been for a bit of time. With us trying to get back into a more usual pace with the band, after all this time, it’s nice that we’re getting a little bit of light on us at this moment, especially given that we’re engaging more than ever since like 2007, when we kind of let our foot off the gas.”

Sample comments on Reddit threads about the Starting Line’s name-check: “I am losing my millennial mind over this reference.” “This one was for the elder emo swifties.” “I screamed! They were my absolute favorite band in high school. My husband and I still listen to them all the time.” “All the elder emo millennials screaming: One of us, one of us.” “That moment when you realize you’re a musical influence to one of the biggest stars on the planet.” “Drop the (Starting Line) cover of the song immediately.”

And: “THIS IS THE MOST PENNSYLVANIA THING THIS WOMAN HAS EVER DONE. i’m so happy for you guys.”

(For those who really pay attention to both intersecting worlds, a joint fan noted: “Funny to think the Starting Line and Jack’s first band Steel Train were both on Drive Thru Records.”)

The singer still seems wonderstruck, to borrow a Swiftian word, about this stroke of recognition. “It’s a trip man, for sure. I can be nothing but really grateful and humbled by this whole thing. And it’s nice that I even get to speak with someone like you about our group in any capacity. So very happy about it.”

And if more dates are indeed in the offing as a result of this? “Please, everybody come check our band out. If it’s good enough for the name drop, come check out the goods.” He is suddenly abashed at what he just said. “You don’t have to print that part. That sounds so weird.” Vasoli can be forgiven for a little enthusiasm: Being embedded in the document that the whole world is scanning — a lyric sheet — is the kind of thing that can make somebody jump up.
