Schmitty & Sons began back in 1941 when Wilfrid Schmitt “Schmitty” began driving for the Orchard Lake Co-Op, a local transit company. In 1952, Schmitty purchased his own bus and began transporting children for the Lakeville Schools. This tradition of excellence has allowed the company to expand and prosper throughout the years. Schmitty & Sons still provides transportation for the Lakeville School district; however, the fleet has expanded from that one bus in 1952 to over 100 buses today. The expansion has also opened doors for new areas of business in the charter and transit division. In 2000, Schmitty & Son’s purchased the rights to the Gray Line Tours franchise for Minnesota. Within Gray Line Minnesota we operate a large fleet of school buses, coach buses and trolleys. The Schmitty & Sons transit division includes the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA). We also operate the Quick Ride Ramp shuttle buses at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Hwy 23 Sandstone to Askov construction meeting April 22

DULUTH, Minn. –   On Monday, April 22, 2024, at 5 p.m., Minnesota Department of Transportation staff will be holding an information meeting about construction occurring on Hwy 23 between Sandstone and Askov at the Sandstone Community Center (130 Oriole St E, Sandstone, MN 55702). Work primarily includes over seven miles of pavement resurfacing with some intersection improvements. Motorists can expect future road and ramp closures that will require detours.

MnDOT asks motorists, farm equipment operators to safely share the road during planting season

MANKATO, Minn. — Motorists traveling on Minnesota roads this spring should watch for large farm equipment moving from farm to farm for planting season, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. 

Since 2021, there have been 446 crashes involving farm equipment in Minnesota, resulting in eight deaths and 171 injuries.

“Farmers need our highways to prepare and plant fields at this time of year. Sunrise and sunset can also reduce visibility of farm equipment while driving. Drivers should slow down and prepare to encounter slow-moving farm vehicles, especially on rural, two-lane roads,” said Brian Sorenson, state traffic engineer. 

Farm equipment is large and heavy, making it hard for operators to accelerate, slow down and stop. The equipment also makes wide turns and sometimes crosses over the center line. In addition, farm vehicles can create large blind spots, making it difficult for operators to see approaching vehicles. 

Motorists should:

• Slow down and watch for farm equipment, particularly at dusk and dawn on two-lane rural roads              
• Use caution when approaching farm equipment
• Watch for debris dropped by farm equipment 
• Drive with headlights on at all times
• Wait for a safe place to pass

Farm equipment operators should:

• Use lights and flashers to make equipment more visible
• Use slow-moving vehicle emblems on equipment traveling less than 30 mph
• Consider using a follow vehicle when moving equipment, especially at night
