Recent tour reviews

It was advertised as a "stripped back"show, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

For Elbow, this meant just the 4 members of the band, plus Alex Reeves on drums - none of the usual strings or brass normally found on tour with them, and no fancy back drops and lighting, just a fairly basic light show.

It was a fairly intimate gig in the O2 Ritz, something like 1500 people, and it was amazing! Guy Garvey comes across as the bloke next door who would find any excuse to go for a pint with you. Everyone is his friend.

They played 8 songs, 3 from the new album, and 5 from older albums - and they were amazing! They are great in the big arenas, but even better in a smaller venue!

Guy and the gang did not cease to amaze with pitch perfect vocals and brilliant interaction with the crowd. “Manchester harmony” he called it. The venue is amazing and just the right size with trains passing by to Deansgate. This causes a great response from the crowd and passengers all waving at each other.

My only negative is the sound curfew as it’s a built up area. I’m sure those all sat on their balconies getting it free wouldn’t complain. Well may be about Kylie the night after.

In all, a brilliant set list and performance from Manchester’s finest. Can’t wait for new album.

Elbow and John Grant, Magnificent I say.

My fist Elbow gig and also my first John Grant gig

Up first an eight song set by John Grant fizzling with good humour, swear words aplenty and that beautiful tenor voice Marz and Glacier were outstanding.

Elbow came on stage just after 8:30, Mr Garvey in 90’s handwaving top form, a little demob happy as this was the last gig for some time as he played master of ceremonies though Elbows greatest hits. The voice is just so pure as the music swells around his word pictures and his bro romance with John Grant is hilarious . The whole set was outstanding with light show and back screens to match.Disapointed that there was no sad captains, but the duet between Garvey and Grant made up for it. Loved little fictions, grounds for divorce, Lippy kids but hearing one day like this live for the first time made my night. Come back soon Elbow, until then I will throw those curtains wide.

John Grant Five Stars

Elbow Five stars

The whole evening not enough stars in the universe to do it justice!

Elbow’s Guy Garvey on playing The Queen’s Jubilee concert and “energetic” new material

The frontman tells us about the power of 'One Day Like This', Elbow's next move, and what slot they'll be playing at Glastonbury

Guy Garvey, 2020. Credit: Press

Speaking to NME at the Ivor Novellos yesterday (Thursday May 19), Elbow frontman Guy Garvey talked about the “honour” of playing the Queen’s Jubilee concert, the power of their song ‘One Day Like This’, progress on an “energetic” new album, and when and where you can expect to see them at Glastonbury 2022 .

Garvey was in attendance at the London ceremony at Grosvenor House to present the Ivor award for Best Album, and caught up with NME on the red carpet just a few hours after Elbow were announced to perform at the Queen’s upcoming Jubilee concert alongside the likes of Queen , Diana Ross , Elton John , Duran Duran ,  Craig David , Eurovision singer  Sam Ryder ,  Ella Eyre ,  Elbow ,  Alicia Keys ,  Hans Zimmer ,  Mabel ,  Jax Jones ,  Celeste , Andrea Bocelli,  Sigala  and  Nile Rodgers and more.

“We’re going to do a turn for Lizzie! It just feels like another party and we’re honoured to be asked,” he said. “It’s lovely and we don’t take anything for granted any more. It’s 20 years since I first walked into Grosvenor House. At that time it was for our first Mercury nomination in 2001. That feels wild that 20 years have flown by. We never assumed we’d be on these lists or asked to play things like that. It was a massive honour to be asked to play the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, and an unexpected one.

He added: “It’s a cause for national celebration and we get to strut our stuff!”

Asked about the secret to why the band have become synonymous with celebrations in the UK, Garvey put it all at the foot of their single ‘One Day Like This’ from their breakthrough 2008 album ‘ The Seldom Seen Kid ‘.

Recommended

“It’s that one great big song we’ve got, isn’t it?” he replied. “When we were writing it we were feeling that it might become a popular anthem. The balance of the song is that the tone that it strikes is not saying that everything’s rosey, it’s saying ‘this moment is rosy’. That gives people reason to throw their mouth open and their head back in song.

“We certainly didn’t expect it to be as popular as it’s been. It’s allowed us to keep writing the rest of our music. We’re working on our 10th studio album at the moment, and that song has certainly afforded us some years of that.”

Elbow

Garvey said that the band’s next album – their 10th – would have a very different feel to their more laid-back 2021 album ‘Flying Dream Pt. 1’ .

“That’s an album that was in the planning for many years,” he said. “Weirdly, the pandemic gave us the opportunity to do something that was easy and gentle. There was a conversation about when to release it – whether to wait until the bottleneck of music to be released.

“We felt that it was more important for our fans that it came out as close to the time that it was written in as possible.”

He continued: “At the end of the day, it’s a very gentle song about friendship, childhood, and romance. We’re all spending time with our kids, remembering our own childhoods, and it’s a very North West-centric record. Since its release, we’ve had all kinds of people telling us that it’s their favourite record. We don’t think we could have spent our time better.

“Now it’s really good to get back to playing the other side of what we do.”

Guy Garvey singing live onstage with Elbow in 2021

Asked about what their next album might sound like, Garvey replied: “Who can say? I would imagine that this period of celebration is going to go on for a while. The shows that we’ve got booked, coming up in the next few months, are going to go off – if last September’s shows are anything to go by. It’s still the first time we’ve been playing material from [2019’s] ‘ Giants Of All Sizes ’, which is a big, angry record.

“The shows in September had loads of energy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was taken onto the next record.”

The frontman also said that the landmark of the next record being their 10th was playing on their minds, as well as most of the band reaching 50.

“With the fact that it’s Number 10, who knows? There’s some kind of marker in our heads that it’s the 10th album,” he admitted. “Also, most of us turned 50 that year. ”

“The most hilarious thing to happen when we got together in Brighton, where we recorded ‘Flying Dream Pt 1’ in the Theatre Royal, was that we hadn’t seen each other in months, we all gave each other a hug, we went to look at our notes and everybody pulled out bi-focals! We all went bi-focal the same year!

“I can’t believe we’re still allowed to do it, and I can’t believe we’re still allowed to do it in each other’s company.”

elbow on tour 2022

Among their upcoming shows is an appearance at Glastonbury 2022. Asked about where they’d be playing at the Worthy Farm festival, Garvey revealed that it would be on the main stage on the Sunday ahead of Kendrick Lamar headlining. Quizzed on who else he’d be looking forward to seeing, he replied: “Everybody else! I’ve been to so many gigs already. After this I’m going to see the Oh Sees , followed by Alt-J at Brixton.”

As well as shows and new material, he said the band might also be considering celebrating the anniversaries of earlier records after marking 20 years of their debut album ‘Asleep In The Back ‘ last year.

“The lovely thing now is that every now and then, someone syncs one of our old songs to a movie and it gets some new interest,” Garvey said. “The benefits of streaming means that all of your music is available all the time, then it leads people to the albums. There are all kinds of reasons to pick up on stuff.”

He added: “We might at some point in the future play whole albums on tour, randomise it even. I really love the All Tomorrow’s Parties set-up. When I curated Meltdown Festival a few years ago, that was so much fun. I think if all of Elbow were asked to curate a festival then it would be quite out there. Let us do it, it would be a good one!”

The Upcoming

Elbow at Hampton Court Palace

elbow on tour 2022

The Birds, One Day Like This, Lippy Kids

Elbow have been at the forefront of the British indie scene for over two decades, with 2022 marking their 25 th anniversary as a band.   The festival circuit darlings made their debut at Hampton Court Palace Festival with two dates on the 10 th and 11 th June, an intimate setting with a capacity crowd of 2,500 people – not that you’d know this with the strength of the crowd for the numerous singalong numbers.

The group took to the stage with the sun setting on a glorious early summer evening at the Tudor estate, of course, home to Henry VIII.   The audience was treated to 16 songs from across Elbow’s career, offering a fine showcase for the breadth of the band’s sound mixing heavier numbers, like the stomping opener Dexter and Sinister and the serene Mirrorball from the Mercury-winning album The Seldom Seen Kid,  two mirror-balls positioned on either side of the stage producing an ethereal glow.

Singer Guy Garvey was in tremendous voice with the whole band proving their worth and entertaining the crowd throughout with no dull moments. Station Approach from 2005’s Leaders of the Free World earnt a rave response. While the setlist was broad, it is a shame there were no tracks from their first two, slightly harder-edged albums, though the more anthemic tracks suited the introspective setting and perhaps audiences at Glastonbury will be treated to some of those early tracks.

The prog-sounding The Birds – which is always a highlight at an Elbow gig – was sheer perfection, with the slow buildup rewarded with Garvey’s soaring vocal in its middle section. As the set drew to its close, the crowd became more involved with singalongs for the stunning My Sad Captains and a rollicking rendition of Grounds for Divorce , preceded by The Bones of You .

Most bands would be happy to close with these tracks, but Elbow’s encore contained Lippy Kids , about Garvey’s native Bury and a clear fan favourite, with the crowd in loud voice singing back the song built around the beauty of Garvey’s voice: “build a rocket boys”. There is clearly no other choice to close an Elbow gig than the iconic One Day Like This, which the group also performed at the Jubilee Concert last week. It’s lost none of its power to unite a crowd 14 years after its initial release during the 2012 Olympics when the track surged up the charts. It was a timeless, joyous celebration of live music.

Hampton Court feels perfect as a concert venue for Elbow who, despite making their debut, felt at home, delivering a rousing set of harder-edged tracks, slower ballads and singalongs, clearly showing why they have such a dedicated fan base and have lasted 25 years.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views.  They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Houston astros’ starting rotation injuries reflect in mlb standings.

At the start of play April 25, the Houston Astros are mired in last place in the American League West.

The Astros begin play Thursday with a dismal, 7-18 record.

One need only look at the banged up Astros starting rotation to help find an answer for their troubles.

It may not be the only reason for their troubles, but it certainly contributes.

At the start of play April 25, the Astros ranked 28th of the 30 MLB teams, with a 5.14 Earned Run Average. They have a 28th ranked WHIP, at 1.50.

Astros pitching had yielded a .264 batting average to opponents, which ranked them 28th among big league pitching staffs.

Along with the Chicago White Sox, Astros pitchers have given up 135 runs. Only the Colorado Rockies 142 runs allowed is worse.

The Astros are trying to navigate their schedule without five potential starting pitchers. The list includes:

RHP Luis Garcia (Tommy John surgery in May 2023)

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case, tupac shakur s estate challenges drake over ai vocals in kendrick lamar diss song.

RHP Cristian Javier (Neck discomfort)

RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (Elbow surgery in June 2023)

RHP Jose Urquidy (Strained forearm)

LHP Framber Valdez (Elbow inflammation)

Javier is the most recent addition to the Injured List, having been placed on the IL April 21.

HOUSTON, TEXAS - APRIL 15: Spencer Arrighetti #41 of the Houston Astros pitches in the first inning ... [+] against the Atlanta Braves at Minute Maid Park on April 15, 2024 in Houston, Texas. All players are wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images)

The Astros promoted their most highly rated prospect pitcher, right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, to take Javier’s place on the roster, and in the rotation.

Arrighetti has been used as a starter, and reliever in his Astros development.

The Astros also recalled right-hander Forrest Whitley, who had long been considered a solid prospect pitcher for Houston.

Whitley has started in his past, but he will most likely be used out of the bullpen in his time with the parent Astros.

The only good rotation news came when All Star, and likely future Hall of Fame right-hander Justin Verlander returned to action with a four hit, 6 inning quality start victory against the Washington Nationals April 19.

Joining Verlander in the Astros rotation are right-handers Ronel Blanco, Hunter Brown, J.P. France, and Spencer Arrighetti.

As CNN.com indicated Blanco, 30, threw a no-hitter in only his eighth big league start, Monday April 1. He defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-0. It took him 105 pitches to complete the game.

Pitching On the Astros Farm:

MLB.com lists only Arrighetti among the team’s first seven players ranked in the Astros farm system. Arrighetti is rated the team’s third best prospect, behind outfielders Jacob Melton, and Luis Baez.

Other highly noted prospect pitchers by MLB.com are right-handers A.J. Blubaugh, ranked 8th, and Jose Fleury, rated 9th.

Lefty Colton Gordon is MLB.com’s 10th ranked player. He is the most advanced, as he is pitching at Triple-A Sugar Land. He can be used both as a starter, or reliever.

In short, the Astros really don’t boast much organizational starting pitching depth.

Injuries and Pitching Depth:

Without question, pitching injuries have swept through Major League Baseball.

From sore neck issues, to shoulder pain, to forearm issues, to torn elbow ligaments, MLB pitchers are suffering injuries at an alarming rate.

GOODYEAR, AZ - FEBRUARY 22: Gavin Williams #63 of the Cleveland Guardians poses for a photo during ... [+] the Cleveland Guardians Photo Day at Goodyear Ballpark on Thursday, February 22, 2024 in Goodyear, Arizona. (Photo by Chris Coduto/MLB Photos via Getty Images)

Issues regarding pitching depth have motivated teams like the Cleveland Guardians and Miami Marlins to concentrate entire MLB first-year player drafts on selecting pitchers.

In the pandemic shortened 2020 season, the Marlins used all their six picks on pitchers, and five of those were from the collegiate level.

In 2021, the Cleveland Guardians used 19 of 21 picks on pitchers.

In Cleveland’s case, Tanner Bibee, and Gavin Williams, both drafted in 2021, have already appeared in the Guardians major league rotation.

Bibee is a fixture in the current Guardians rotation, while Williams is rehabilitating from an elbow injury he suffered in spring training.

Astros Payroll:

One might wonder why the Astros didn’t sign a free agent pitcher, or trade for a starting pitcher during the offseason?

They did, however, add depth to the bullpen with the acquisition of All Star reliever, Josh Hader. The Astros are paying Hader $19 million per year, for five years. He can become a free agent after the 2028 season.

Hader’s $95 million contract is a major commitment to the Astros pitching staff.

It should be noted that Houston is paying Verlander $43,333,333 this year, and will pay him $35 million next year, before his contract expires in the 2026 season.

Lance McCullers Jr., who hasn’t pitched since making eight starts in 2022, is being paid $17 million this season, and $17 million each year until he can become a free agent in 2027.

Christian Javier’s contract won’t expire until he can become a free agent in 2026. He is working on a five-year, $64 million contract he signed in 2023.

So indeed, the Astros have made major financial commitments to pitching.

sportrac.com lists the Astros player payroll to be $249,528,711.

The Astros payroll ranks third on the sportrac.com 2024 Total Payroll list, behind the New York Mets and New York Yankees.

Given the payment deferral of Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers team payroll is listed at $227,954,173, behind the Mets, Yankees, Astros, Phillies, Rangers, and Braves.

Now, despite making long and costly commitments to several pitchers, the Houston Astros find themselves short on starting pitching in a division where they usually find tremendous success.

Niagara Falls: How to Have an Original Experience

Can you picture yourself standing surrounded by the incredible roar of Niagara Falls, feeling the mist on your face as you take in this world-famous waterfall? Now, picture doing all of this sans the elbow to elbow shuffle with thousands of tourists, seeking a sliver of unobstructed view. Sounds near impossible, right? Well, it is actually possible to have an original Niagara Falls experience that veers a little off the well-trodden path frequented by masses. Here are some tips on how to experience Niagara Falls in a more original way.

Niagara Falls spans the border between the United States and Canada. It actually consists of three waterfalls: the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and the larger Horseshoe Falls. Together, they boast the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America. An astonishing six million cubic feet of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute!

The natural phenomenon of Niagara is one thing, but it also has a bit of a history with daredevils and stuntmen. Since the mid-19th century, people have attempted to conquer the falls in various contraptions, from barrels to tightropes, with varying degrees of success. Today, these stunts are illegal, but they contribute to the rich tapestry of tales surrounding the falls that people still love to talk about.

Visitor numbers to Niagara Falls are as impressive as its other stats, with an estimated 30 million people flocking here each year. This makes it one of the most visited tourist spots globally. It’s a testament to the fact that Niagara Falls is a natural wonder worth seeing. But it also means you’ll have to share your experience with many other people at the same time. However, if you know where to look, there are ways you can make your experience a little more unique. Here are some tips.

Consider Staying in Toronto

While Niagara Falls itself is a magnet for tourists, staying in Toronto offers a slightly less touristy experience with the added convenience of being able to plan a more serene day trip to the falls. Toronto is Canada’s bustling metropolis, and it’s only a 90-minute drive from Niagara Falls. This makes it an ideal base if you want to explore the falls without actually staying overnight amid the bustle of tourist crowds. If you’re in a group, look into options for Toronto charter coach bus . You’ll travel in more comfort this way, and you can set your own itinerary better. It ensures that everyone can travel together comfortably and hassle-free but also allows for a more personalized experience, letting you explore the falls and the surrounding area at your own pace. Staying in Toronto not only gives you the freedom to visit Niagara Falls on your terms but also allows you to enjoy the diverse cultural, gastronomic, and entertainment options that Toronto has to offer.

Explore the White Water Walk

Many visitors gravitate towards the thrill of the boat tours, which take you close to the base of the falls for a spectacular, but often crowded, view. A lesser-known but equally captivating experience is the White Water Walk. This attraction offers a unique vantage point to feel the raw power and hear the thunderous roar of the Niagara River’s Class 6 white-water rapids. The walk takes you along a boardwalk at the river’s edge, allowing for an up-close and personal experience with the turbulent waters that is unmatched by the boat tours. Here, the sheer velocity and force of the river are palpable, providing a more intimate sense of the natural power of Niagara Falls and its surroundings. It’s a serene, less crowded alternative that can give you a different perspective on the water’s majestic nature.

Hire a Personal, Local Guide

For another original Niagara Falls experience, consider hiring a personal, local guide. Going beyond the conventional tours, a local guide brings a personalized touch to exploring the falls, sharing stories, historical facts, and hidden gems that are often overlooked by the regular tourist routes. They can tailor the tour to your interests, whether you’re keen on photography, history, or seeking out lesser-known vantage points. A local guide can also advise on the best times to visit certain spots to avoid the crowds and even introduce you to local dining experiences. This option not only supports the local economy but enriches your visit, making it a memorable adventure rather than a standard sightseeing trip.

Book an Early Morning Boat Tour During Off Peak Season

To do some of the touristy activities while avoiding the crowds at Niagara Falls, book an early morning boat tour, especially during the off peak season (mid October to early May). The misty mornings at the falls have a magical quality to them, but early tours also mean fewer tourists, allowing for unobstructed views and the tranquil sounds of nature. Off-peak months usually see a significant reduction in visitor numbers, making this time ideal for those who prefer a more peaceful experience. You might need to wrap up warmer as the weather is colder, but you might not be bothered about this if it makes it easier for you to spend more time exploring the beauty of Niagara Falls without the inconvenience of large crowds. And some people dislike the summer heat anyway! This timing also increases your chances of getting more personalized attention during the tour, enhancing the overall quality of your visit.

An authentic experience of Niagara Falls – one of the most loved tourist spots in the world – is possible with a little creativity. Choose some of the less famous activities and pick your timings carefully for an altogether better experience. You can still do everything you want to, while avoiding being elbow to elbow with other people all the time. It’s a win-win situation you’ll want to embrace when you visit this natural wonder of the world!
