Since 1884, this gingerbread, storybook mansion–a Eureka landmark–has been one of the most written-about, photographed and celebrated Victorian homes in the country. Built by lumber magnate William Carson, it boasts towers and turrets, columned porches, gables and striking ornate details, all topped off with a radical paint job.

The Blue Ox Millworks is where Victorian craftsmanship of the 1800s is used to create authentic custom products for homes around the world. They have done custom work for governor mansions, national parks, historic cathedrals and even President Bill Clinton. Come to the Blue Ox to watch antique woodworking machinery in operation, visit a skid camp, learn about traditional boat-building, and meet the blue oxen, Babe and Blue. You can take a self-guided tour or call in advance and have one of the crew show you around.
In 2021, the Magnolia Network produced “The Craftsman,” a series following master woodworker and Eureka native Eric Hollenbeck as he restores historic homes and other local treasures at Blue Ox Millworks. Two seasons are available to stream.

The 6.5 mile Eureka Waterfront Trail (Hikshari’ Trail) is located along the shores of Humboldt Bay. Under most circumstances we should be able to pull fresh oysters out of the water for our tour groups to consume back at Humboldt Bay Provisions.
A Closer Look
We strive to get you up close and have a true oyster experience. Wind in your hair and possibly mud in you eye. So use caution at all times while on the tour and watch out for potential hazards.
Oysters Artfully Prepared
Humboldt Bay Provisions was established in 2012 as a local tasting room and oyster bar to highlight for travellers the bounty of Humboldt County and surrounding areas.
Low Tide Work
Most of the heavy lifting occurs at low tide. The majority of oyster culture area on Humboldt Bay is only exposed at low tide. A smaller percentage is floating operations on the surface in certain areas.
4 Hour Boat Tour and Tasting
Provided by aqua-rodeo farms.
The tour begins at 11 AM. Up to 6 persons can embark on the boat tour portion. We meet at 205 G St. Humboldt Bay Provisions in Old Town, Eureka. You may use the restroom at Provisions and we can do the required paper work before we walk to the dock to get on the boat (2 short blocks). This tour is rain or shine and if needed rain ponchos will be provided. We will motor boat around Humboldt Bay looking and learning about various aspects of oyster aquaculture methods and operations on the bay. Depending on the tide more or less of the bay bottom will be exposed for investigation and explanation. Special equipment and vessels will be looked at and discussed at length, At the conclusion of the tour each participant will enjoy 12 oysters prepared for them at Humboldt Bay Provisions.

Tours are available by motorboat from Woodley Island in Eureka or by kayak from the Arcata Marsh. This interactive tour includes oyster farming history, harvesting techniques, bay and marsh ecology, boat safety, hands-on oyster harvesting, and includes three oysters to take home or to the restaurant of your choice. The Humboldt Bay Oyster Tour takes two hours and is run rain or shine. Adventurers should be dressed in layers, and willing to be splashed by bay water and walk in bay mud. Motorboat tour is $75 per person per person. There is a one hour boat tour available for $55.
